Controls Anton Corbijn gives the crime film a distinctly European twist in this understated thriller (think The Day of the Jackal). A trim George Clooney plays Jack, a hit man who relocates from Sweden to Italy after assailants try to take his life. Jacks handler (Johan Leysen) advises him not to make any friends, which proves easier said than done. Ensconced in medieval Abruzzo, the assassin passes himself off as a photographer (in Martin Booths novel, A Very Private Gentleman, he claimed to be an illustrator), but hes actually customizing an assault rifle for Mathilde (Thekla Reuten), his female counterpart. Upon his excursions through town, Jack meets Father Benedetto (Paolo Bonacelli), who senses he has something to confess--A priest sees everything, he explains--but Jack would prefer to share a brandy. He also befriends Clara, a prostitute (Violante Placido, perfectly comfortable with onscreen nudity). What starts out as a sexual relationship deepens as Jacks sensitive side--he has a thing for butterflies--emerges, but then the Swedes discover his hiding place, and Jack develops doubts about his lady friends, leading to a showdown that plays like a scene from an old Western, a debt Corbijn acknowledges when Jack chances upon a broadcast of Once upon a Time in the West. If the conclusion doesnt cut as deep as the director intends, his admirable restraint throughout keeps the tension at a low boil, while Clooney tamps down his charisma to play a dogged professional with redemption on his mind. George Clooney Being Quiet In Nice Suits In Europe

This movie should air on The Travel Channel. It's very clean and everything is just so and Clooney keeps getting this very fresh haircut and doing sit-ups and the pseudo-sophisticated ladies will love it and the men will get to see some shooting and there's nice vistas and then it is over. For a movie star, Clooney has made shockingly few great films, as a leading man or director. This one is like bad Bullit.Anton Corbjin makes quiet, good looking, hollow movies that feel like the celeb photog and music video guy he is.

The worst

Just simple, it's the worst movie, at least in top 5. The history seemsgood by trailer, but when started the movie, it's a disaster. I don'texpect a James bond film, but i want more with this cast.Clooney's no warranty the movie. There's no action... it's too slow! All the time! :-( And until today, i thought the Clooney's presencelikes to be good. There are good photography, beautiful scenes by the American places.Good points, good angles of view, only this rescue the movie. There are good scenes with nude, but the movie still slowly...But finished likes the same started... nothing!

A confident film with good moments, but generally cold

Just watched it last night, based on good reviews here at IMDb.com,actually. Anyway, yes, this is a confident film, and Clooney and thecast are pretty good. Some good tension near the end, when you andClooney realize a covert trade is actually a veneer for something morelethal. And Clooney's "boss"...what was his motivation? Maybe it's revealed inthe novel of this story - but I couldn't get that question out of mymind!! The prostitute was a nice touch, though - she gave the bestsense of life and expressive nuances in the film...which I'm SURE issupposed to "contrast" against Clooney's stiff "Jack" (uggh). It's just that despite "The American"'s plot really being like a grittywestern (per the director's admission & intent) underneath & takingplace in the low-profile, Italy city of today, I just didn't believesome of these characters would talk so little, with bland stiltedlines. While it was understandable because many characters were sosuspicious of each other...ultimately, (realistic or not) it just madethe film more soulless and cold. More casual dialogue would have madethis film more cryptic, sneaky and human. And the life of Jack (Clooney) is so unbelievably empty despite hisclandestine career & attempts with Clara (cliche). Others are going tolike it more than me. Not as good as I'd hoped & definitely, definitelyoverrated... I'm just kinda tired of this cinema-posing.

A minimalistic, compelling, uber-cool thriller, with gorgeous camera work and, of course, handsome, talented Clooney

Jack/Edward (George Clooney) has been a hired assassin for years. Now,well into middle age, he wants a more quiet life by the side of theroad. He thinks he has found such an existence with a beautiful womanin the Swedish countryside. However, in a tit for tat, his enemies arestill after him and hunt him down in Scandinavia, destroying his life. Now on the run, Jack ends up in Rome and contacts his boss, Pavel(Johan Leysen) for further instructions, making it clear that he wants"out". Pavel advises him to travel to a small city in Italy and laylow. Jack does so. Curiously, though, he makes a friend with the localpriest, Father Benedetto (Paolo Bonacelli) and also meets theproverbial hooker with a heart of gold, Clara (Violante Lacido). Now,Pavel asks him for a last assignment and, if Jack completes it, willgive him his freedom. The work is tantalizing, for Jack won't bekilling anyone but, rather, will be making a deadly weapon for anotherassassin, Mathilde (Thekla Reuter). Reluctantly, Jack agrees to do it,hoping the money earned will start a new life for himself with Clara. But, as the job continues, Jack begins to wonder who it is thatMathilde will be killing. And, is someone following him up and down thenarrow and hilly streets of his present villa? This is really a finethriller, don't listen to the naysayers, and its style is uber-cool.Drawing from the theory that less is more, there is very littledialogue or action, except when it truly counts. In between, is aromance and a beautifully photographed look at the Italian, andbriefly, Swedish countryside. It is somewhat a departure for Clooney, for his wit and seductive voice are nearly kept hidden, doing most ofhis work with facial expressions, very well by the way. The rest of thecast is quite fine, with Bonacelli, Placido, Reuter, Leysen and all ofthe others fulfilling their sparse roles nicely. As stated, the sceneryis gorgeous and the camera shots well worth the price of admission, too, while costumes, script and direction have few noticeable faults.Particularly noteworthy is the final sequence of events, shot on awinding road and ending in a gorgeous wooded area near a river. If youlike thrillers, especially understated but powerful ones, such as theoriginal Day of the Jackal, you should plunk down the dough for thisnewest entry. It is a minimalistic tour de force.

'American' is Foreign to Me *

Dreadful film. The plot is totally non-existent.The film is extremely slow moving and boring beyond belief.George Clooney is really starting to look his age here. He is a hiredassassin hired for another killing. What killing? What is going onhere? The beginning scene is never fully explained when innocent people arekilled for apparently no reason whatsoever. The scenery is beautiful is this area ripe for a killing.Clooney lusts for women, but each one probably has a story for herself. There is little intrigue here. In fact, you will be so contented whenthe credits roll.

Ultimately Disappointing and Unimaginative

This review is from: The American (Amazon Instant Video) I too was mislead in thinking this was more a thriller that what it turned out to be. Yet that wasn't the problem with the film. Nor was the slow pace, scenic cinematography, the symbolism, occasional subtitles, the full frontal nudity, the minimal action scenes, the acting, the problem at all. It was kinda like a "Lost in Translation" of hired assassins last job movies. The script is what ultimately leads you astray from potentially a good film into a semi-predictable ending with some head-scratching subplots. Clooney was great in his stoic demeanor aching to break free from his life and actually connect with someone for a change. The smoking hot Italian prostitute he eventually falls for is his lifeline out of the nomadic solitude he leads. Yet the film makers throw some incomprehensible and unexplained actions along his way and never give the audience a proper payoff.

George produced this vehicle film for himself

Moody, sullen, joyless film about an unhappy assassin in Italy and allthe people he killed, and it showed well why it might not be the bestcareer choice for anyone seeking happiness in their job, plus a longlife. Pretty plain and simple killer flick that surely won't be a realcrowd pleaser except for George, but he did show more serious dramaticpower than in many of his movies. And, not one charming George smile, not even one, as he was a very serious man here.George(now just like Clint or Jack or Dustin) was pretty believable inthis spare to spartan to skin-and-bones formula story, with just enoughfacial angst shown to prove to us that he was no longer a happy camperblowing people away, even though he was very good at it. That's why hewanted out(they all do at some point in these formula films), and didwhat he had to do to get out and find a bit of(hooker)happiness withthe rest of his life. You will have to see how it worked out for him.Not nearly a classic but a decent film with a predictable ending donesimilarly many times in previous assassin films. Great travelogcamera-work of Castel Del Monte and nearby countryside in the Pugliaarea of central Italy, and the virtually all-Italian crew used made itclear that George is very serious about Italy as his second home. Hewill surely make more films there, hopefully better than this one.

Slow burning excellence that's cut short with a cliché

An assassin lays low in Abruzzo, Italy, however, he discovers thatthere are other paths he can take in life after meeting a humblingprostitute. The American is slow burning character study of a hardened man, ahybrid reminiscent of the Professional assassin Leon (1994). GeorgeClooney is perfectly cast as skilled amoral killer and it's easy tostay with him throughout. Based on Martin Booth's novel director Anton Corbijn wonderfullycaptures the back drop of the Italian beautiful landscapes and town tocontrast the toughness, loneliness and plight of Jack/Edward (Clooney). As well as Clooney's fine performance, Violante Placido is noteworthyas the warm beautiful woman of the night. Equally impressive is Violante Placido, Thekla Reuten as a female assassin. The supportingcast are all of great standing and credit should goto screenplay writerRowan Joffe for the effectively subtle and minimum use of dialogue. The action is kept grounded and is far from far fetched or evenstylised like 'Bourne' or 'Leon'. The score is fitting to the settingand The American shot on location look just adds to the atmosphere andmellow  pace as you get drawn inside Jack's world.Nevertheless, Corbijn and/or the source material sells out just in theclosing moments and your left with a sour taste with the cliché endthat has now become the norm'.   Which is a shame after the simmeringbuild up that came before.

soooooooooo boring

I guess some people will think my review isn't fair, but this was so freakin' boring I couldn't finish it. With all the hype and great "reviews" on the box I was expecting something exciting and suspenseful or at least entertaining. Nope. Don't waste your money buying this. Rent it from the library or watch it online if you have some time to waste.

Watching paint dry

I was looking forward to George's latest film, assassin in an Europeancountry, all sounded great, Italy the land of culture and history, anda bit of eye candy to boot! Well you won't miss much, this film withthat feel has been done before, and this one starts with a few bangs, then sort of sits there to the finish. If you want an American in anEuropean setting with more bang, better story line see Ronin instead. Not a bad film, great surroundings but to slow for my taste, and sawthe so called plot coming a mile away. 5 out of 10. And yes here issome more text other wise I won't get my take on The American submittedon the great IMDb.

Butterfly & Jackal

An excellent film. No, it is not fast-paced, yes, the camera does pan lovingly over the landscape (and takes some really outstanding aerial shots), yes, George says very little and there seems to be no traffic (of any kind) in this part of Italy. However, as a somber character study of a death dealer approaching death it is just excellent. I found the atmosphere, the pacing, the minimal dialogue (much of it in Italian) and the minutiae of 'Jack's' craft thoroughly absorbing. I see it as a counterpoint to the ridiculousness of the other films in the action/thriller genre - not that they aren't enjoyable on their own level. Whereas in other films a Matt Damon or a Pierce Brosnan would jump on a high powered motorcycle for the chase scene, Clooney uses a thoroughly Italian scooter. The weapons employed are small, subtle, appropriate. This film to me recalled Day of the Jackal (1973) in its ability to evoke the stealthy, paranoid world of the international assassin. Kudos to George for taking on such a quiet role and for bringing to it a depth of feeling (just watch his eyes) that really evokes the chilly world of unredeemed loneliness and isolation his chosen career necessitates. I like this film very much.

Bordemland

Yes it's review time again, and as much as I've enjoyed many pastclooney flicks, these past you have been a tragic disappointment.Alright I'll give credit where it's due if they were going for moviethats all about emotions in someones head I'm sure this would be themovie to see however. First mistake is the way it was advertised. Never EVER advertise anemotional film as an "assassin thriller" this movie has so little to dowith thrill that i got more of one just getting in the chair to see it.Second mistake understandably this was about the things that go oninside a man's mind who's clearly not satisfied with his lifestyle, but, you still have to show what goes on, not assume that the audienceis going to guess and pray for the best. Final mistake, dragging whatin any other movie would be a very quick plot point out and making itinto literally the entire movie, I mean what the hell? You couldn'tacquire a plot from any writers at all so instead you just figured theplot would be he's sad about his work and wants out and that would beit?!? Failure is what you get 3/10. P.S. to the person who I saw write this was the second best movie ofthe year, if that holds true then this has been a terrible year indeed.

Wow! Not what I expected..

Violante Placido was great in this movie! She played the girl friendand did an outstanding job...nice looking lady and hope to see more ofher in the future. This was a slow paced movie...very little talkingand the whole town seemed gloomy. George was off his game in thismovie. I like his movies but this one is at the bottom of the list forme. I haven't seen this much endless driving around since Dragnet moviewith Tom Hanks. The wife did not like the nude love scenes which arenot common with the Clooney movie in the past. I was just disappointedin the whole project! I hope his next movie will be better than thiseffort. The violence was the biggest feature of this movie and whensomeone shots they usually kill their victim...but that gets tiringafter awhile..

Overrated Boring Movie

No dialogue to make the movie interesting. This must have been shot in a day. Clooney's talent was wasted on this so-called film.

Dull and pointless? - Or a smart, refreshing take on the 'thriller' genre?

By some viewers, `The American,' based on the novel `A Very Private Gentleman' by British author Martin Booth, will be deemed `a work of art.' By others - a dull, overly long character piece, lacking in both plot and pace. So which is it? Well each of these views can be fully appreciated and understood after having reached the 100 minute mark. It depends almost entirely on the level of your expectations and whether or not you have the patience to be rewarded by what for me was a very engrossing and compelling piece of film. But my immediate reaction after having left the cinema 100 minutes and nine pounds sixty later? - Certainly that this is a film which cares more about taking a look at the behaviour of character rather than your conventional Hollywood tale full of stylish edits, breakneck cliffhangers, predictable dialogue and cheesy love scenes. Ultimately though, my very first thought was `what a pleasant surprise.' - If film-goers are used to watching a lot of the Hollywood thrillers like the one's I've just described (e.g. `Quantum of Solace,' `Taken'...etc - good films in their own right) then of course `The American' will seem like the slow, boring, "nothing really happens" film it's been accused of being. You can't come straight from having watched Angelina Jolie's `Salt' or Liam Neeson's `The A Team' and expect to enjoy `The American,' which you'll have seen advertised as a spy thriller with George Clooney, so it's only natural to think that it will follow in a similar fashion. It doesn't. - Instead, `The American' follows more in the wake of thrillers like Mel Gibson's `Edge of Darkness' in terms of action/suspense and more like Jeff Bridges' `True Grit' in terms of character/plot development. Instead of long winded action set pieces, it has sudden but meaningful bursts of violence which work almost as effectively as in `Edge of Darkness' to contrast the slow but involving scenes of character and intrigue that worked so well in `True Grit.' So if your tastes run more toward the mainstream of Hollywood thrillers then maybe this is not the film for you. However, what if I told you the film contains a car chase, five assassination attempts on Clooney's character, a femme fatale who isn't all she appears to be, a suspenseful foot pursuit through a narrow maze of streets with two professional hit men trying to outwit and kill one another, a steamy sex scene, a face to face showdown and a 7 person body count (more than `The Bourne Ultimatum'). Well it does. But although this may not sound boring, I can understand how the direction and execution of these set pieces could be interpreted as such. Anton Corbijn, a Dutch director known for his photography and music videos, effectively has the opposite of Paul Greengrass's flashy editing of handheld cameras used to create a sense of urgency that was used for the Bourne films, instead opting for a more reflective take on the action. Fans of Clooney will either love or hate this film. Those who aren't fans of Clooney are likely to love it, as he gives arguably the most un-Clooney like performance of his career to date, using the same solemn intensity we saw flashes of in `Michael Clayton' and `Syriana' and turning it up to the max. Gone is the easy smile and likable charm that Clooney is known for exuding better than anyone, replaced with hard eyed stares and a strong sense of vulnerability that Clooney does well not to overdo when communicating the troubles of his flawed character to the audience. Aided by a fresh and solid supporting cast with the likes of Thekla Reuten (In Bruges), Violante Placido and Paolo Bonacelli, Clooney has a great deal of talent to play off and Herbert Grönemeyer's contemplative music score only underlines and adds to the atmospheric, brooding quality that the film proudly possesses. Reuten brings a coldly effective steeliness to her emotionless assassin, Placido is immediately likeable as Clara, the sweet and loving prostitute and Bonacelli delivers a knowing, world weary gravitas to his philosophical role as the priest that makes you hang on to his every word and whose scenes with Clooney are the forefront for the film's moral statement and raising of questions. So eventually, the audience end up rooting for a hit man and a prostitute, showing that not everyone is black or white. Assassination of innocent people and prostitution as occupations are controversial to say the least, so why do we end up liking these characters and wanting them to be happy? Even the squeaky clean priest is shown to have kept a dark secret, hidden away in his past. So the film's message is that everyone, no matter who they are, strives to be better and find redemption. Every single character is revealed to have sinned one way or another and a powerful line from the film is Clooney's response to the priest when being told to seek God's forgiveness, `I don't think God's very interested in me Father.' Something which could be said for all the characters and all of us in general, as highlighted by Clooney's meaningful line, `All men are sinners.' Verdict: Not perfect but with wonderful craftsmanship from Corbijin's subtle direction to a powerful, hard hitting performance by Clooney, this is the first of its kind for the thriller genre. And hopefully not the last. If you keep an open mind and watch it with no expectations, then like me - you'll find `The American' to be a very pleasant surprise. A smart and subtle piece of drama. "We are all sinners "

Helter skelter. Characters are treated superficially, Supportingcharacters are put together without the need, the story has no logic, the end is stupid and irrational. Do not waste time! So illogical, unnecessary events, secondary action, none of which has not beenprocessed dramaturgical, or in conjunction with the film (figuremechanic, the son of a priest, what to do there ? "We are all sinners").... George seems to be needed money, so i accepted this project, hiscareer was so (if he ever had) at the end, and another in a series offailures is not very important. Oh, unless you want to see NudeViolante Placido and some more hot girl.

Not an action thriller, but a good look inside the mind of a killer

Directed by Anton CorbijnStarring George Clooney, Violante Placido, Paolo Bonacelli, Thekla Reuten105 minutesVideo:Video codec: VC-1Video resolution: 1080pAspect ratio: 2.35:1Original aspect ratio: 2.39:1Audio:English: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1French: DTS 5.1Spanish: DTS 5.1Subtitles: English SDH, French, SpanishRated R for nudity and sexuality.Anton Corbijn usually directs music videos and used to work as a photographer for the New Musical Express. He started that job because he loved the music of Joy Division which led to his first proper film in 2007, Control. It dealt with the life of lead singer Ian Curtis. This is his first feature that has nothing to do with music. It's not what the average viewer would expect. The American is about Jack (Clooney), who kills people for a living. In the first few minutes, we see him in action as people try to kill him in Sweden. He relocates to Italy for what he says will be his last job.One of Jack's "weaknesses" is that he forms friendships instead of staying aloof while he is working on a hit. This is not an action movie. There are two or three brief action sequences, but that's not the point of this movie. If you're looking for another Bourne movie or Taken, look elsewhere. The American is a more contemplative look at the life of a killer. We see extended sequences with no dialogue and Clooney is shown thinking. We see his paranoia and get an idea of what it would be like to be in his shoes.Despite the warnings of his boss, Jack makes friends in Italy. Will they lead to his eventual death? This movie will undoubtedly be too slow for the majority of viewers. I found it refreshing. It's intelligent for the most part and I was drawn in to the story. One of the things I liked about it was that Clooney didn't rely on his smirk and charm routine. He played this one seriously and it was the better for it.The ending is deliberately ambiguous. Does Jack live or die? We can't be sure. The cinematography is excellent. The beauty of the Italian mountains is shown frequently. The picture quality is also good, making the panoramic shots very effective. This Blu-ray presentation is recommended for fans of the film, or people that enjoy slow-paced stories that require a bit of thought to fully appreciate.

DarkVulcan29 19 April 2012

An absolute unsatisfying film.

A lot of you feel that George Clooney is magic at the box office, anything he touches turns to gold, but The American is proof thatGeorge Clooney is not invincible. You've seen a lot of films about lonely hit-man, such as TheProfessional(1994), and Bangkok Dangerous(2008), to name a few. Butunlike those two The American makes no attempt to make the maincharacter who is a hit-man interesting. George Clooney never reallyseems into the role, it seems like he is doing this movie cause he losta bet, it seemed clear to me, that he did not want to be in this. Andhe has no chemistry with anybody he plays off of.If your hoping for a Jason Bourne like thriller, believe me you won'tget moneys worth. There is one or two scenes of gun firing. And onlyone chase scene. Other than that it's just George Clooney just walkingand sitting, and sight seeing, which i have seen better sight seeing inEat, Prey, Love. So do yourself a favor avoid this movie, it's acomplete bore.

Proving the new Ebert Rule: if it stinks, he loves it

I expected George Clooney + Italy + beautiful women + guns = awesome, but somehow they figured out a way to make it = lousy."Characterization" is not silently sitting in harshly lit coffee bars,or assembling guns alone, or making small talk and deep looks with animprobably superhot prostitute. Hemingway could be monosyllabic butpowerful. This movie is just illiterate. Ebert's review talks about how the wrong person calls him Mr.Butterfly, and somehow that is evidence of the haunting perfect beautyof this film. Um, no; very character knows either about his tattoo orhis respect for the endangered CGI Abruzzese butterflies. I guess evenMr. Ebert couldn't sit through this twice to get the details right. Therefore, as an American, I want to apologize and explain to allnon-Americans here on IMDb that "The American" is far more pretentious, dull, and tiresome than any actual American. That Yogi Bear movie hasto be better than this wreck.

Intense and lovely

This review is from: The American (Amazon Instant Video) The italian town is just bonus, and what a bonus it is. Beautiful acting, wonderful cinematography, and interesting execution of a typical story. I'd like to thank all the people who gave this movie a bad review for being the reason that studios make movies like Transformers and GI Joe.
