Great suspense drama thats had a grossly misleading marketing hype

Saw this as a preview in London.I do not blame any of my fellow reviewers here for slamming this downas the worst horror film. Indeed it is, if you watch this expecting tobe scared out of your wits. But this is not that film. The marketing for this movie, thoughbrilliant, is criminally misleading. This is a movie with a very clever spin on the normal exorcist fare. What this turns out be is a fascinating suspense drama using exorcismas a narrative tool.I found the script to be very clever and entertaining. The main leadactor who plays the reverend is very charismatic and carries the wholemovie. Admittedly, the movie would be half of what it is without hisperformance. The other actors, particularly the teenage victim whomaybe possessed by a demon, are very good too. What I didn't like most is the very end. It felt tacked on for the sakeof living up to its misleading marketing. I can honestly say that ifthe film ended 10 minutes earlier, I would have been totally satisfiedwith a complete film and was ready for the credits. However, there are attempts to make you jump out of your seat butunfortunately, these moments are too copy cat of the techniques used inSixth Sense and similar. It may be effective to some but I feel itcould have been done better and hence live up to the marketing hypeafter all! But those are small negatives. This is a movie very muchworth watching, if you don't hate mockumentary style films. Lower yourexpectations, ignore the marketing and just enjoy a clever suspensedrama. If you jump a few times, then think of it as a bonus.

Ultimately a fizzle

I can't fault the acting. Not enlightened, but not noticeably bad. Irecall a local scandal a couple years ago about a fundamentalist churchnot too far from where this movie was filmed, which was supposedlyengaging in devil worship and child molestation. Not just the minister, but a large portion of the congregation as well. It's not just a rumor:arrests were made, news articles were written. The news story inNewsweek is here:http://www.newsweek.com/2005/06/05/the-devil-s-handiwork.htmlOr search on "devil worshipers tangipahoa parish" and you will see whatI mean. This part of the state has banned "The Wizard of Oz" from theschools due to satanic influences. So the characters were basically believable, especially Rev. Cotton. And I am willing to make some allowance for the use of a hand-heldcamera in documentary style. It certainly raised more unhelpfulquestions than it answered, but it was evidently a budget necessity. In my view, the major problem was a plot that was extremelyunsatisfying. The ending was ambiguous: was the problem mentaldisturbance (triggered by understandable causes) or actual demonicpossession (apparently not just spontaneous, but brought on by thelocal devil worshipers). But after I saw it all, I really didn't care what the cause was. It wasdifficult to muster much sympathy for any character. The young girl wasapparently innocent, but her ravings were enough to destroy anysympathy earlier created. I felt more sorry for the cat that wasbutchered. I can't really recommend this film, except maybe to other locals fromsoutheast Louisiana who might get some entertainment from familiargeography. But that's about the extent of it: a promising idea thatwent to hell at the end.

Better than expected.

I went into this movie thinking it was going to be like the previous"Exorcism" movies, and I thought I was going to laugh at the fakeexorcisms taking place. I was pleasantly surprised when from thebeginning, the main character, who performed exorcisms himself, admitted that they are bullshit. The plot was well laid out and kept meinterested until the end.The ending. It would have been better if her dad DID impregnate her, then it would have made sense. But having a cult involved and asupernatural being inside of her wasn't horrible either, it was aninteresting ending.

Aussieflytrap2 15 May 2012

Great until the last five minutes. . . .

It all starts out promisingly, with a reverend wanting to show how allthe exorcisms he's done have been frauds, and how he works with thepower of suggestion. and even begins to get creepy. The girl herself iscreepy enough, and filmmakers had it right in trying to leave thepossibility of possession pretty ambiguous throughout the movie, kindof a is-she-or-isn't-she kind of way. That is when the movie is at itsbest. Then the ending happens. It's awful, and completely squanders allthe potential of the first hour and a half. I cannot recommend it eventhough the first half is pretty good, because I found it it such acheat, and I want my two hours back.

Did i watch the same film as everyone else?

Watched this on TV last night and it is without doubt the worstexorcism film i've ever seen. It's low budget but by god you can tell.At the end of the film you're non the wiser than you were at thebeginning with no real conclusion.Shocking, totally shocking. If you're reading this and thinking ofrenting /buying it, don't even bother. The Paranormal Activity series is a low budget set of films but theyreally nailed it, this is just terrible. I certainly wasn't on the edgeof my seat the whole way through, weren't even any cheap scares!Shocker.

A good horror film

It's well made, well acted, has some creepy moments, and has a good mix of both old and new plot elements in the exorcism sub-genre of horror films. It's a slow burn and solid film

moviemaniac008 13 May 2012

Good try....

The Last Exorcism is far from being a great movie. Yet, it's very farfrom being a flop. I can say this film was good for me and yet it wasdisappointment. There was just a little something that didn't work outfor me. I won't go blaming it on the budget....at 1.8 million $ budget, the filmmakers do what they can, and on the visual side, they actuallydid a pretty good job. The actors themselves are actually great intheir roles, particularly Patrick Fabian and Louis Herthum, whileAshley Bell is also believable in her role. The story revolves onCotton Marcus, who wants to prove that the ritual of exorcism is fake, decides to do a ritual on a family who believes their daughter ispossessed by the devil. But things don't go as planned...The beginning, I could tell everyone in the theatre was bored, butwhile others seemed frustrated about the movie, I had a big smile on myface. I was thinking that these fools have watched so many hostel andSaw movies (As much as I love these franchises, I believe whoeverthinks of Saw as a horror film is an idiot) that they forgot what realhorror was about, about making people grow in an atmosphere of terrorlittle by little in order to show images later on that will scare them. The Last Exorcism started well, and in fact, the first few minutes wereactually quite amusing. But it quickly became clear that, after 15 or20 minutes, that the documentary aspect wasn't going to end soon. For those who heard about Last Exorcism as being one of the scariesthorror films of the year, I guess you shouldn't believe it. This filmdidn't make me jump once, although it did send chills down my spineonce or twice. I think I jumped a lot more during Piranha 3D. Theending was a bit vague, but the more I think about it, the more I likeit. I guess my expectations were a bit too high. District 9, thedocumentary asset, was about half an hour long but this film is almosta 99 minute long documentary. The horror doesn't come out as scary asit could because it feels like they bore you enough after 30 to 40minutes, that when the film does become scary, you just don't care. But I am happy with one thing: Having a horror film with a good scriptis rare nowadays, and this film succeeds in making itself different byoffering a somewhat good story. Daniel Stamm deserves credit for tryingsomething a bit more...different, I would say, but the film itselfisn't just all that great. With Eli Roth as a producer, I was actuallyhoping for something better. Maybe when it comes out on DVD I will rentit, and knowing what it is, I will probably watch it from a differentperspective, but for now, I don't feel like spending 11 bucks twice ona film I didn't really enjoy. All in all, if you walk in with noexpectations, you will probably enjoy, because most people who enjoyedit seemed to have no expectations, but if you expect this film to bethe all-time scariest movie, then you will be disappointed. If you'renot sure, rent it on DVD when it comes out. It was a nice try...butsadly, on today, September 6th, 2010, this film ranks a 5/10. It's notthat bad....but it could have been better.

Adequate movie, but something was missing...

Initially I thought this movie to be a spin off in the wake of thefamous "Paranormal Activity" movie, and I do seem some similaritiesbetween the two movies. And much in the sense of that movie, "The LastExorcism" is slow in building up in tension as well, where as it tendto let the characters unfold instead. There aren't really any good scares in the movie, so if you are in thisto be freaked out or scared out of your seat, forget it. There are acouple of moments in the movie that will make you squirm or cringe, butnothing major. The movie is more of a psychological scare-ride, not avisually-in-your-face kind of horror movie. And you are actually sitting much of the time trying to guess andfigure out what really is going on throughout the movie. I am not goingto give away the story here, but I liked the part of the movie thatactually had you guessing and keeping on your toes, trying to figureout just exactly what was going on.As for the way the movie was shot, like a documentary, well everyone isentitled to have their own opinion on that matter, of course. Mine, however, is that I kind of liked it in a bizarre way, because it was anice deviation from the usual Hollywood-style movies that you seeeverywhere you look. However, I didn't like the hand-held camera thatmuch, there was too much swinging to and fro, and it added frustrationand irritation to the movie, contra adding to the thrills andcreditability of the movie. I pay to watch a movie and see it for whatit is, if I wanted to see a camera filming something on the go, I wouldjust turn on my own camera and go outside and film stuff while movingaround. That kinda was what killed off the movie for me.The actors and actresses in the movie actually did a good job, and Iespecially liked the performances put on by Louis Herthum, playing thefather (Louis Sweetzer), he did a phenomenal job, and you really buyinto the emotions of his character. He did an awesome job in the movie. And also Patrick Fabian, playing the minister Cotton Marcus, he did agood job. Now, I live in a country that doesn't have all thosedifferent branches of Christianity, so I can't really relate topreachers and evangelists, but in my opinion, he did come off asbelievable and standing firm in his role. And of course Ashley Bell, playing Nell Sweetzer, also did a good job.One thing that did actually work quite well for the movie, was the factthat the movie makers had managed to acquire quite a lot with littleprops and lack of special effects. That added a sense of realism to themovie in a way, and it worked well that there weren't CGI effectsflashing around, like many other Hollywood movies. This movie isthriving on its ability to tell a story, and it does so in a very goodway. There are some nice exorcism and demonic possession movies out there, this one well, it was alright, but the drowsy camera slinging aroundmade it less enjoyable for me, hence the low rating. The story in "TheLast Exorcism" was actually good and captivating, and you easily gotconnected with the characters and believed in the performances put onhere. But, there was just something missing, something to make themovie unique and stand out - to make it memorable. I fear this moviewill pass quickly and go into oblivion without making much of animpact.I am, however, glad that I watched it because it wasn't a bad movie, and it was a good attempt at this particular small niche of movies.Though I highly doubt that this movie is the type of movie you willreturn to a second time, it just didn't seem to have that kind ofrepeated watch value. And as for the ending? Well, I see there are lots of different opinionsabout the way the movie ended. For me? Well, I found it to be somewhatenjoyable, not a typical Hollywood ending, but at the same time it waskind of anti-climatic.

HAD ITS MOMTENTS

I won't go into the plot of this film as that has already been done. So I will just say that while I wouldn't buy it (I rented it), it wasn't that bad. Like I said it had its moments, and some of those moments were seriously creepy. I watched it at night on my own which obviously added a little something extra to the viewing. Still I thought 'this is good'...until the end. Okay I know not all movies have to have a happy ending, especially those of the horror genre. But come on!! And to be honest the first thought that came to mind at the end was the old,'gosh this reminds me of something'. And that something was The Wicker Man/Hot Fuzz. And I don't mean by the later film that it was funny. I think you get where I'm going with this. It wasn't exactly scene for scene of coarse, but you see it and its been done. I'm sorry I just think they could have wrapped it up differently than the way they did. It was just all too familiar. But hey, it still managed to give me the heebies. And forget about checking under the bed...check the top of the wardrobe!!

Wow quite Lame

If the Exorcist is Dom Perignon, this movie is Champagne you get with a plastic cork!Enough said.

This is a very bad movie.

i just got home from seeing this movie, thank goodness I only had topay the matinée price, when we got there, my daughter and I, 4 otherpeople were in the theater. When it ended and the credits were rolling, lights went on and we were the only two left. We have no idea when theothers left, I am guessing after the first 45 minutes or so. This hasto be the absolute worst movie I have ever seen. Seriously folks, Ishould have listened to previous reviews, I didn't, shame on me. Don'tbother to waste your time, Its that bad. My daughter and I have beentrying to do a weekday movie night for a while now, and by the trailerfor this title, it really looked like we would enjoy a good scare. Notso much.

Serviceable thriller a la "THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT" meets "THE WICKER MAN"; fine for Halloween retntal

THE LAST EXORCISM (2010) ** Patrick Fabian, Ashely Bell, Iris Bahr,Louis Herthum, Caleb Landry Jones, Tony Bentley. Fairly creepysupernatural suspense 'mockumentary' in the same vein as "THE BLAIRWITCH PROJECT" with echoes of "THE WICKER MAN" in this indie producedby horror maven Eli Roth about a charlatan man of the cloth (Fabianaffectively amiable and pitiable) who faces an ultimate challenge inthe form of young Bell (very good in her on-the-dime changes inbehavior/moods), a backwoods farm girl who may in fact be harboring ademon (or two) …or is she? Rookie filmmaker Daniel Stamm employs theserviceable but rather predictable screenplay by Huck Botko & AndrewKurland and milk it for all its worth with every genre trick in thebook (spooky mood music; shadows; sudden jerks of the camera etc.) thatoffers a big set up with a somewhat unsatisfactory final reel (but it'sa doozy). Fine for a Halloween rental for those who like 'reality'based terrors.

rogerdob 04 May 2012

Very exciting until sucky ending!

Although it's a rip-off of a method of filming that's already been donemany times (Blair Witch, Paranormal Activity, Cloverfield, etc.) themovie was quite exciting. It provided quite a few scares. However, this is one of those movies where the ending was a realcop-out. How could the writers figure out a whole story and thensuddenly give up? Couldn't they have worked a few extra weeks andcreated an ending that would have been satisfying. If this movie had a real ending (and I don't know what that would havebeen) I would have given this movie 8 stars. But the conclusion of thefilm was so bad I have to give it a much more lower score.

Talon-LongStar 04 May 2012

fairly creepy movie with a horrible ending

The movie started off kind of slow but became interesting as the storyprogressed, becoming fairly creepy...until the end. The end was justsuch a complete let down and took the movie in an entirely differentdirection with no explanation nor reason. The story went from slow andborderline boring to decent to creepy to utterly horrible. Myrecommendation is unless you find yourself snowed in or with absolutelynothing else to do with 90+ minutes of your life I would skip thismovie. I only got a 5 out of 10 from me because the middle of the movieis fairly decent for a modern American horror movie. There are so manybetter horror movies out there if you are willing to deal withsubtitles. The review's rating this movie below a 5 are more accurateof the overall value of the movie.

Bad ending to a possibly great film.

[WARNING: spoilers to the movie in this review.]It started with a great creepy build-up. The cast performances were exceptional, especially for a low budget movie, actually the performances were better than some big productions with mega budgets and "A" list actors. The girl was especially amazing in her "possession" portrayal and her general appearance fit the bill to a T, as far as I am concerned. The casting director deserves an award just for the impeccable choice in actors and their aesthetic appearance. The whole thing follows the "mocumentary" formula with great effect. It is a tale about a preacher who has lost his faith until, of course, he encounters the real thing with this family of backwoods people. Then movie fell apart when "the truth comes out" and it seems there's a "Satanic cult" behind the whole plot. Oy vey!! I mean what a cheap way to end this. Who gets scared by "Satanic cults" anymore, aside from hardcore Christians and Fox News? It seemed as if the writers were pressed by their producers and/or budget and had to "wrap-up" the movie in any way they could. And that they did, and it simply killed anything good the movie had. Toward the end, in the scene when the "documentary" crew goes to rescue the possessed girl from her father, the "Satanic symbols" on the walls are some of the worst in the history of the genre; one can even observe the creators did their occult homework when you see a "punk rock" anarchy sign, the old "666" and a cheesy upside-down pentacle -of course, and even some junior high school level geometry symbols trying to pass off as "occult" designs. It was laughable and pathetic. And then, obviously, everyone gets killed, so who knows how the "film" was found for our entertainment. Maybe Satanists are forgetful of such things. This could have been a great low budget, even a classic film, like Night Of The Living Dead, or something akin, but unfortunately it ended abysmally, but not by "the devil" but by a bad last third of a script. I don't hate this movie, there are certainly worse, but as stated, the ending was so horribly done that all the atmosphere of the film was completely gone and I was left bereft of any of the "horror fun" movies like these are supposed to invoke. I would like to see the actors in better films, they certainly deserve and earned it so.

02 May 2012

this movie was horrible

This movie was horrible.. The Previews made this movie look awesome... i went and watched it.. it was okay in the middle.. The ending was very lame.. it wasnt what i expected. Wasnt scary at all. Reminds me of the blair witch project with the whole "someone fiming it for a documentary" part. I wouldnt give this movie even half of a star.

Not at all what you'd expect given the trailer

This review is from: The Last Exorcism (Amazon Instant Video) This movie is billed as the stereotypical exorcism movie but it plays more like a low-budget independent film with a twist. I'm not knocking the movie for that, it's part of the style the filmmaker chose and it goes nicely with the narrative. But don't expect this film to be a smorgasbord of all those shocking 'Exorcist'-style special effects, that is not what it is about. At the very beginning of the film, the mirrors on the bedroom walls shake via dental floss, and the loud growling noises from hidden speakers (both carefully placed by our would-be exorcist, who is more of an antihero in this film IMO). The gist of the movie deals with the nature of exorcism and the relief it provides for the afflicted (mental? spiritual? both?) The protagonist in the film begins his duties with the idea that exorcism is a fraud that only ends up harming the innocent, but spends the rest of the movie trying to figure out if the young girl he is brought in to help is really possessed, or if she has more "earthly" issues. I'll leave it at that so as not to spoil the movie, but realize that this film is far more psychological than action, as you are led to believe by the trailer. All in all, and in that scope, it wasn't bad.

02 May 2012

An excellent Found-Footage, though it does have it's flaws.

It starts out strong. A reverend who wants to document his last"Exorcism" on camera, to show that the whole thing was a fraud. He getsa letter in the mail, which he thinks is just another misunderstoodpsychiatric problem. The whole movie you're on the edge of your seat, waiting to see what happens next. I'm a huge fan of the found-footage genre. Sure, they don't have thebest acting (Which isn't the case in The Last Exorcism) but there'sjust something really scary about it. Maybe it's the fact that it seemsmore real. The Last Exorcism isn't an exception. It feel real, mostlybecause of the amazing acting done by all the characters. Each one hasa real personality, and the actors are each perfect for their part. Thegirl does an especially good job at being possessed. The whole moviefeels real, nothing cheesy or Insidious about it. That is, until youget to the end. It's not a bad ending - in fact, it's good. But it justdoesn't fit the rest of the movie. It feels more like a really good"Scare Tactics" prank rather than the real conclusion. But it's creepynonetheless, And actually leaves it open for a sequel. (SPOILER: Whathappened to the reverend? Did he end up defeating the demon? Alertingthe police? Stopping the crazed satanists?) Which I believe they'redoing. Hopefully we get an explanation of some of the events that wereleft in the dark.Overall, a creepy, effective, believable horror film. (Until the end,you have to suspend disbelief for a second. 7.5/10
