a nothing movie...and that's before the third act

"Devil" lacks a shred of style or originality. Whenever it comes onDVD, I am half-tempted to re-visit the film and jot down all theclichés taken from more capable movies. For about 95% of the film, fivepeople are trapped inside a stalled elevator in a high-risebuilding…yet the film is never able to make us feel claustrophobic withthem--unless you figure that the screenplay is looping the samescenario every ten minutes and the audience is trapped in this low-rentthriller for what feels like hours (though it's only 80 minutes long). This is the kind of movie where everybody--the police men, thefire-fighters, the building's technicians--acts like it's their firstday on the job and they are clueless on how to save people in distress. There's some nonsense introduced that the reason why nobody iscompetent during this hour of need is because the devil trapped thesepeople together to prove a point, and the devil is actually in the formof a human stuck with the other people on the elevator, so he or shewill just turn off the lights at some point and kill one of the four, and then repeat this for kicks and giggles. Why would the devil go outof his way to disguise as a human and kill others on an elevator?Either the devil has a horrible sense of humor, or is especially lazy. There are no coincidences. So whenever the investigator brought in isintroduced and we get a long backstory about how his wife and childwere brutally murdered by a drunk driver five years ago, we are surethis will become relevant in the third act. Because "Devil" actuallyhas a message to say: about how if you do something wrong--like, let'sjust say, kill a woman and a child five years ago because you were ableto finish off a six-pack all by yourself--everything will work out forthe best if you are really apologetic. Everything will work out…foryou, that is--everyone else is screwed.Because of the twist in the last 15 minutes, many are calling this"''Saw' in an elevator." Except for a few caveats to use thatsimilarity--"Saw" had exactly two scary scenes in it--the comparisondoes hold water: "Saw" confuses blood and gore as terror; "Devil"confuses loud music as terror.Rating: * and a half out of ****

Hell Comes in the Form of a Good Horror Film

Devil marks the first film in the new Night Chronicles series each filmfollowing supernatural beings and the concept of "the devil". The devilhas always been an interesting concept for movies especially when usedin a respectable way. When used here, it's nothing more than alukewarm, mediocre horror film with no appeal or attract factor. I washoping this would be like a "perspective horror" movie. A horror filmwhere to get the full effect you need to imagine yourself in the shoesof one of the victims. Recent films like Open Water and Frozen arecreepier if you think that way. It's an interesting concept notutilized to the fullest in Devil which is the most disappointing thinghere.Going into this with very little knowledge on plot and having only seenone trailer, what I was going to see was pretty much foreign. I washoping at least 85% of the film would take place in the elevator theywere stuck in, but if you were to take all 80 minutes of this film (75without credits) and piece together all the scenes that are in theelevator you would get around 35 minutes of movie. Thats all. We shouldhave the feeling like we are in the elevator stuck with thesestrangers. We should feel like the characters are feeling. They cantescape to get aware of things in the "outside world". Why should we? AmI thinking too deep into this? Or did I just go in expecting a moviethat possibly doesn't exist? The story follows five unnamed strangersas they board an elevator heading to their own specific destination. The elevator gets stuck between floors and the five are trapped. Thesecurity guards who are put in charge of the elevator management noticethe five whom are stuck and soon learn they can communicate with them, but they can't hear them talk back. Whenever the lights go out in theelevator, someone dies, and the five learn one of them is the devil inhuman form. Which one is it is a mystery. But we learn the secret fromone of them and some background history that may come in handy later. The main problem for me is how the film is handled. We have to infer alot to have the movie make sense. The ending (which I will not ruin)may take some research like it did for me to figure out exactly whathappened and why the devil makes the choice he/she does. Just for thefilm to have the name M. Night Shyamalan scares me more than the actualfilm. M. Night is one of the few directors/producers not to have reallyone good film out. Even the praised classic The Sixth Sense I findoverrated. It seems like every film Night ever made was panned orunnecessary. Was there any reason to make a movie on Lady in the Wateror a live-action adaptation of the animated TV show The Last Airbender?Devil may seem creepy for the first twenty minutes, but it's effectwears off. The fact they keep switching from in and out of the elevatoris annoying and the more it makes me wish scenes in the elevator withthe strangers wasn't so limited. While it knows what it's supposed tobe, Devil doesn't make too much of an effort to show off what it reallycan do. Another mediocre horror film undeserving of two more moviesfollowing it.Starring: Chris Messina, Bojana Novakovic, and Bokeem Woodbine.Directed by: John Erick Dowdle.

Slight M Knight, going up.

M. Knight Shyamalan makes a slight return to his game in the claustrophobic suspense film, "Devil." It's not really a horror film as much a tightly wound whodunnit, with five people trapped in an elevator being killed off one by one, as two cops and two building supervisors watch from outside. The film plays it minimally, with the scares coming from surprise and not from gore. That's to "Devil's" benefit. In fact, the opening credits alone are enough to disorient you, as a fast moving something zeroes in on Philadelphia and the building are soon to be devil-meeters, almost all of them only slightly known actors. Shyamalan wrote the script as part of a "Night Chronicles" series, with brothers John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle directing, which is also to the film's benefit. Trimmed down to a fast 90 minutes, no time or space is wasted (even if the ending becomes predictable as it approaches). It makes the potential for more of the chronicles promising.

Excellent. M night is awesome

M night has been unfairly criticised these past few years.Ok i admit, I wasnt too fond of LADY IN THE WATER but his the HAPPENING was ok. Not his best but definitely not as bad as night haters made it out to be.With sixth sense, signs and unbreakable, he showed us hes a truly great filmmaker and he can come up with the goods if he wanted.DEVIL is the movie that showed those people i hope cos i definitely enjoyed it. Very tense and very scary at some parts, espcieally when the devil revealed who he/she was. That part was eerie.Very well acted by the cast too, espeically the young girl.Theres a good moral message for us to as it teaches us not to do evil. Everyone makes mistakes and thats ok since its part of life and growing up. But if you do, repent and try to improve your life, become a better person.Do not carry on doing evil. It will catch up with you one day.M night is a genius and i look forward to more of my favourite directors work in the future.

terrible

I created an account to warn people how shocking this film is. withouta doubt this is the worst film i think I've ever seen. the storyline isabysmal and there is no character development whatsoever. 2 hours ofone setting with random events occurring, which make no sense, idprefer to spend 2 hours watching the tweenies than to have to endureanother take on this dismal film again. what was shyamalan thinking?! ienjoyed the village to a degree because it was somewhat original but ifigured this film out within minutes.....the worst thing i have everseen. going to watch finding nemo now to rectify the void left by thisshocking title. i am disgusted! never again shymalan, never again!

The equivalent of being locked in a cell with George Michael

This film was actually quite good, but i could do without the narrationof some overly religious racounteer security guard. Basically thecommon fear of being stuck in a lift - but with a twist. 5 people entera lift, but they all have something in common. they've all sinned.well, the devil sure has his work cut out for him because it's his jobto come and kill them. Every 5 minutes or so he comes to kill someone, but every time he does the lights go out and you hear sound effectswhich just makes it seem like a cheap trick. That doesn't make the filmbad though, it kind of makes it interesting and mysterious. The endingis scary as hell. This movie definitely has the best portrayal of thedevil i've ever seen. Having it stare at you and talk to you in acreepy terrifying voice with deep black eyes makes it so intimidating(no word of a lie, but i actually closed my eyes several times and i'ma 20 year old male) Definitely check this movie out, entertaining andscary.

Not great acting but a decent thriller

This is a not too gory but still frightening horror thriller which, while not well acted for the most part, is watchable and unpredictable. A group of people are trapped in an elevator and one of them is the devil himself, though you can't really figure out who it is. That's the thing, right? The idea is that the devil could be among you, or any evil force, for that matter, and it could look like anybody. Not great but not bad.

Amazing movie

This review is from: Devil (Amazon Instant Video) This movie is amazing if you like movies like saw where you never know who's the killer within the group of people. This is a must watched , had me guessing the whole time.

A Cinematic Landmark

The feeling lingers. The images come back, not to haunt you but toreassure you. There is an element of hope within the melancholicsadness of this M. Night Shyamalan masterpiece. There hasn't been sucha limpid definition of love since the world was still innocent. Limpid, yes, that's the word that comes to mind, remembering the shy lopsidedsmile of the extraordinary Chris Messina. Who could possibly havepredicted that Chris Messina was such a giant, unquestionably destinedto a legendary career. Well, Shyamalan I guess. Shyamalan seems intotal control of his canvas. Every frame is a moment, the silences areexquisite, the humans are as humans are and we're allowed to dive intotheir hearts without tricks without illusions. Raw, limpid, poetic andabove all, true. I can't wait for the world to meet Detectives Bowdenand Markowitz in this startling M. Night Shyamalan universe.

You have to watch this movie!

I have to admit that I didn't have high expectations for this movie at first. However, after being a few minutes into the movie it held my attention. This is the kind of movie that keeps you on the edge of your seat guessing what will happen next. I highly recommend it.

Great movie

First let me say that I am a fan of M. Night and I make it a point tosee any movie he is involved in. I enjoy the way he tells a story and Ilook forward to the usual 'twist' in the end. I'm also a fan ofhorror/supernatural movies so I knew I was going to like this one. Iwas not disappointed at all. I take that back, I was disappointed aboutone thing - it didn't last long enough. The movie is only about 80minutes long, but having said that, it flows right along and you'dbetter not get up to go to the bathroom. Unlike some reviews I read, Iactually thought the characters developed quite well in a short amountof time. I understood where each one was coming from and I had enoughhints as to what type of person they were. Like most M. Night movies, there is a little thinking involved on the viewer's part and he doesn'tgive you everything (Unbreakable, Village, Sixth Sense). I was able tofigure out the 'twist' in Unbreakable and the Village about halfwaythrough but Devil had me until the crucial moment. Creepy as heck, wasn't expecting it, and I need to watch it again so I can figure outhow I missed it.

Christians & Deep Thinkers: Take Note!

This is a WONDERFUL film. A true treasure! M. Night Shyamalan (who while not acting as director or screenwriter, was the mind behind the film) has crafted a story that calls to mind the work of storytelling geniuses and greats such as Alfred Hitchcock and the Twilight Zone's Rod Serling. Like them, Shyamalan has a way of using "fantastical" elements to tell a story from "everyday reality" (like something as commonplace as riding an elevator) that convey the *deep truths* of life and the universe which all too many of us, particularly in this modern age, tend to overlook and never give thought to. At the end of the day as "fictitious" or off the wall as the story's premise might seem, the film manages to reflect what could very well be the truth of what reality REALLY is, of how things actually are! THAT's what makes the story so compelling. The "Devil" in the movie represents the very devil many of us might feel like we can recognize, whether it's the force behind the evil criminals we hear about on the evening news or even our own "personal demons" that we ourselves struggle to cope with. Christian audience members will appreciate the cleverly placed subtle allusions and overt references to some of the core elements our faith. Some mythological elements are incorporated without diminishing the overall Biblical perspective of who the Devil is. Thinkers from ALL sides of the spectrum should appreciate the interesting questions the film brings up about concepts such as "free will", "predestination," "nature versus nurture," etc... The movie's artistic and production values are of high caliber. It has the right amount of horror and drama with a healthy dose of comic relief as well. No element seemed gratuitous. It is a suspenseful mystery that will keep you at the edge of your seat guessing what happens next. The main characters are engaging to explore. And while none of the acting is Oscar-caliber, it is well cast. It is so refreshing to finally enjoy an intelligent yet fun Hollywood film that is not replete with cheap sex, drunken jokes, and mindless effects or action. That being said, some of the horror elements should preclude parents from watching the film with young children. Without sacrificing the entertainment value of the movie, the filmmakers did a good job of communicating an important message that will hopefully leave viewers thinking long after they leave the theaters. I personally remain both touched and freaked out by the movie at the same time. This is what movie-making is about. Loved it.

A perfectly serviceable little horror flick

A perfectly serviceable little horror flick. Great graphic for the posters and DVD covers though, with the red light through the elevator door creating an inverted cross image.

Devil: A Nice Change Of Pace

A big fear of many people is claustrophobia. It is a very common phobiaand many films that have capitalized on it can come to mind. I'd startwith the classic 'Night Of The Living Dead' and most recently 'TheDescent', both films really made the viewers feel like the charactersin the film - closed in and no where to go . 'Devil' is another filmwhich uses claustrophobia to heighten the anxiety of the movie goers. It also has a supernatural aspect to it. The film starts out innarration as one of the main characters tells a tale his mothers wouldtell him about how The Devil himself would take human form. Itbasically sets up the main story of 5 strangers stuck in an elevatorand a bunch of weird occurrences during the break down. For those ofyou who do not know of term 'Red Herring', it refers to a purposely putfalse lead or clue in a mystery or Giallo film. There are many Redherrings here. And I enjoyed the guessing game in this film. Somepeople think that horror is all about blood, violence and gore. Am Ithe only one out there who still likes a building of suspense and agrounded bit of realism? This film had a nice slow build up, like akettle of water set to simmer. It slowly builds up to the boil. Andthat's why I like this film. You slowly learn more and more about eachcharacter and as the 5 people in the elevator start dying one by one,the film keeps you on the edge wondering who the killer is. It's asimple plot and it probably is not an original one. But is waseffective and I'm sure that anyone who watches it will be thrown offcourse and probably shocked by the outcome. I don't see it lasting verylong in the theaters. I am glad I gave it a chance and I could say thatit was a nice change of pace from the CGI bloodbaths that many of thegeneral audience considers 'real horror'. It was well paced and wellacted, a film I would recommend.

Interesting

Suspenseful movie, but it starts out a bit ridiculous. The narrator starts by saying his mother used to tell him a story about the devil coming to earth to torture lost souls and it starts with a suicide. What kind of demented mother would tell her son this kind of story? Sometimes M. Night jumps right past logic. But otherwise, this movie is worth viewing and does keep you guessing until the end.

'If you believe in God, then you must believe in the Devil'

M. Night Shyamalan seems to have hit his stride in his first film, The Sixth Sense, and despite the fact that he elects to continue exploring the dark side of thought, his recent products have a lot of promise but seem to falter in the endings. DEVIL is like that. One wants to suggest that this is his take on Sartre's 'No Exit' but after the film gets rolling it simply falls into the category of another stuck elevator story where the people inhabiting the chamber reveal all the good and bad aspects of human behavior while providing a platform for a little 'the devil made me do it' chatter. The film starts well enough with gorgeous upside down vistas of the city of Philadelphia. A body lies on the street in front of a glass skyscraper and the police are called - Detective Bowden (Chris Messina) has reported to figure out what is happening - a suicide or murderous fall. Attention turns inside where five people enter an elevator: a Mechanic (Logan Marshall-Green), a mattress salesman (Geoffrey Arend), a security guard (Bokeem Woodbine), a fussy older lady (Jenny O'Hara), and a young woman (Bojana Novakovic). The elevator abruptly stops between floors and the claustrophobia of the situation begins to wear on the nerves of the five people. They are watched on video camera and a one way speaker by two other security guards- Lustig (Matt Craven) and Ramirez (Jacob Vargas). Strange things begin to happen and one by one the people trapped in the elevator are murdered. Ramirez swears this is the work of the Devil and gradually his fears seem to be true. The actual identity of the Devil comes as a surprise as does the ending of the film - the lone survivor being connected by history to Detective Bowden's tragedy in the past. The story does well in the category of suspense, and it is populated by a very able cast of actors, but it is the superimposition of moralizing and the need to make the Devil a person that pulls the plug on the intensity of the story. It has it's moments but in the end it leans a bit toward the silly side. Grady Harp, September 11

A very solid psycho thriller

After several weaker movies, Shyamalan begin to work on a new trilogyabout the presence of supernatural evil in big cities. He concentratedon the script and preferred to let other people direct the movie and soyou might expect that this first part of Shyamalan's renaissance mustbe a well elaborated and twisted masterpiece. Well, this is absolutelynot the case, there are no major twists or surprises in the story. Butthat doesn't mean that this movie is without the glimpse of a doubt avery well done psycho thriller.Let me mention the negative points first. The movie isn't really long. There are only two minor twists and the first one is not that muchsurprising while the second one is an interesting turning point of thestory but also a little bit predictable towards the end of the movie. The story is not really innovating and this time, Shyamalan reallydelivers what he announces in the previews. Because of the shortrunning time, not every character is extremely well developed andprofound. The critical and philosophic influence that many movies ofShyamalan had is not very present in this movie. But there are more positive points about this movie. There is a hightension present throughout the whole length of the movie and this iswhat makes the watching experience breathless and intense, you don'tsee time pass at all. The movie spares out the unnecessary and goesstraight in your face which isn't that usual for Shyamalan's earlierworks. That is something new, fresh and innovative coming from him anda little positive surprise for many but maybe also a little deceptionfor some of his more purist fans. The interactions between thecharacters in the elevator are intense and very interesting. Everycharacter has a very unique and special behaviour and somethinginteresting to hide even if the characters could have been moredeveloped if the movie had maybe twenty minutes more running time. Theactions in the movie become more and more intense towards the finishand end up in a well done finale that leaves you with no openquestions. All in all, this is surely not the best of Shyamalan's movies but waybetter than the last stuff he has done before this movie. It is not avery surprising and philosophical movie, but rather a short and intensepsycho thriller. It is a very good movie but far away from being thebest movie of the year. It is worth watching it at the cinema or athome, but i wouldn't recommend buying this movie at the full pricewithout having seen it before.

Step one of Shyamalans redemption

M. Night Shyamalan used to be considered one of the great Hollywooddirectors after he smashed box-office records and impressed criticswith films like The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable. Now, it will take sometime for Shyamalan to redeem himself for cinematic crimes like TheHappening and The Last Air Bender. This is the first film made forShyamalan's 'The Night Chronicles', a venture with Media Rights Capitalto create a financing and production partnership that will releasefilms based on his stories. This means that other directors and writerscan take a stab at creating decent films out of Shyamalans' ideas. JohnErick Dowdle (Quarantine) takes the reigns in this supernaturalthriller. The plot surrounds a group of people that get trapped in anelevator, unaware that the devil could very well be among them. Thefilm squeezes every bit of tension for all its worth. It creates abunch of dubious characters to keep up the 'who-dunnit' aspect and ituses the simple locations very well. The mostly unknown actors do adecent job with some of the silly dialogue and the plot unfolds at agreat pace. It's also refreshing to see a horror film with a Christianmessage under the surface. This isn't high-brow stuff at all, but it isa very entertaining and suspenseful thriller that keeps up thesurprises and twists going till its satisfying conclusion.

the devils glass eye was cracked at the pearly gates of mars

Ok, so wtf. This movie is terrible. The devil's in a elevator? Give me a break. I actually saw this in the theatres. From the opening credits with the upside down...everything, I was like...oh boy. This is going to suck isn't it? I guess everythings upside down becaaaaaause, an upside down cross is satanic? Whatever. This is one awful movie. Did I say that already? The plot is jolted and quickly choppy and all the sudden you're in the elevator and things starting getting...crazy. And ridiculous. How about that ending? Is that some awful bullcrap or what? Messed up too. Some ho and boyfriend sitting of front us in the theatres was all like what the F? Out the F loud. Will you shut up? Really. But truly, I was thinking the same thing. Like, what the F indeed? Why did I waste my money and time to see this worthless piece of crap? And then it all comes together at the end with this other thing, and that is truly terrible. Terrible acting. Terrible story. Ridiculous characters. Ridiculous premise, first of all. It is absolutely staggering there's not more one star reviews on here. You'll notice it disappeared as quickly out of theatres as it came into it. Kind of like the devil himself. Hmmm, irony? Maybe you should buy some tarots with an oujia board and visit trump towers' elevators instead. After all you may spot the donald. You can spot his hair. And that would be dramatically more entertaining than even one sec of this movie.

Floor Six: Fine Characters and Good Plots...going up!!

M. Night's Back in the game in his tale of evil whacking the passengers of Elevator Six of a Philadelphia high rise building.Beginning with the mysterious suidicde from the 35th floor, Detective Bowden (Julie and Julia's Chris Messina) is dragooned to become a sinister force's latest audience as it picks off an ecclectic passengers of express elevator six and to defining the metaphysics of evil after his family's killing at the hands of a hit-and-run driver. From the disorienting opening sequence to the final narration by Jacob Vargas' Ramirez, M. Night continues to bring his audience through the screen to his world with clarity and stregnth reminding us why we go to the movies. Devil's plot races forward like a controlled explosion, never boring the audience (which, when I saw it, was me.) And while the tale may seem tired, the presentation was not.I enjoyed Mr. Messina and the Elevator Cast's performances. The terror for the passengers is felt clearly with each time the lights go out and the reactions become more and more irrational and hysterical, just as it would become for any of us trapped in similar circumstances. Mr. Messina's detective follows a clear path from logic to faith which inspires those who have none. I enjoyed his journey and his presence in this picture. I last saw him in Julie and Julia and dismissed his performance in favor of his co-stars. However, after Devil, I will watch more carefully for anything with him in it.The onion peel, when the connections within the elements of a story unravel to reveal something, was executed routinely but brilliantly. Even I, a jaded film watcher, was surprised when the core came out. This is the mark of a great writer, as M Night is, despite Hollywood's need to define greatness with financial success. Bravo, guys!! This one's a keeper!!
