The story of Jerry Lee Lewis, arguably the greatest and certainly one of the wildest musicians of the 1950s. His arrogance, remarkable talent, and unconventional lifestyle often brought him into conflict with others in the industry, and even earned him the scorn and condemnation of the public.

ridiculous

This movie easily falls into the category of laughable, if not beyondthat to actually insulting. I mean in what alternate universe did thefilmmakers and studios think that this film would play? From beginningto end we bombarded with Quaids overacting and ridiculous facialexpressions, laying on the "im a loose cannon" act a little thick.Another picking point I had with the movie was the lack of a realisticstory of events that would make you grow to connect to a character. Imean in one scene where Lewis is playing in a bar before making it bigthere is this over the top, just completely absurd bar fight that everycitizen in town is apparently a part of. Then Lewis begins to play hisrendition of "A whole lot of shaking'" and everyone immediately forgetstheir differences and begins dancing wildly as if its the most normalthing in the world. These kind of scenes, of which there are numerous, coupled with the lack of depth in any of the characters led me toactual laughter. So all in all this film is not worth viewing foranyone not interested in mocking a filmmaker and his actors decisionsfor an hour and a half.

Jerry Lee's Story With His Own Music

Dennis Quaid plays Jerry Lee Lewis in this movie. Jerry Lee does his own music. The movie is a three star and the music is a five star. This movie is the true story of the life of Jerry Lee Lewis and a wonderful showcase for the artist's own music performed by himself.

Great Movie About the Defiant Jerry Lee Lewis (from Ferriday, Louisiana) in his Early Career = Super Movie!!!!!!!!!

This review is from: Great Balls of Fire! (DVD) This is a great movie about the young, defiant Jerry Lee (A.K.A. "The Killer").Its a story about him growing up down in Ferriday, Louisiana, (my home state) along with his cousin the Rev.Jimmy Swaggart. I'm been to the house Jerry Lee grew up in. Its a museam now, operated by one of his sisters. When Jerry Lee was a kid, he would sneek over to the black juke joints, and listen to their music. He loved it. During this movie, from childhool on up, Jerry Lee and his cousin the Rev.Jimmy Swaggart were always in conflict. Rev. Swaggart believed Rock & Roll was the Devil's Music, and he thought that Jerry Lee was a sinner for playing it. Anyway, Jerry Lee "stuck to his guns", and kept performing Rock & Roll music.Jerry Lee wanted to become a star like Elvis, so he set his sights on Memphis, and Sam Phillips with Sun Records. He moved to Memphis, got a record deal with Sam Phillips and Sun Records. He moved in with relatives in Memphis, I believe it was his first cousin and his wife and their 13 year old daughter Myra. Anyway, this "1st cousin" was the bass player in Jerry Lee's band. Jerry and Myra got close, and even though Jerry Lee had already been married twice. He got a Marriage Licence and secrely married his 2nd cousin Myra at age 13. When her dad found out, he got really mad and started to try and kill Jerry Lee, but Sam Phillips talked him out of it. He gradually accepted it, and remained a bass player in Jerry Lee's band. Jerry Lee's marriage to Myra lasted 13 years. He's been married at least 6 times and I think this was the longed marriage, he ever had.One really good part of the Movie, is a concert with Chuck Berry. The people in charge told Jerry Lee, he had to start the concert and Chuck would follow him. This made Jerry Lee mad. He said "nobody follows the Killer". Anyway, he agreed and when he was performing his last sone "Great Balls of Fire", he poured lighter fluid on the piano and set it on fire, as he played the song. The Audience went WILD. After that, when Jerry Lee was leaving the stage, he told Chuck Berry "Follow that"!!!Anyway, Sam Phillips scheduled an English Tour for Jerry Lee, and against the advise of Sam Phillips, Jerry Lee took along his 13 year old bride Myra. Anyway, when the press found out about his marriage to his cousin a 13 year old, they turned against him. At his first concert the crowd just sit there and showed no emotion. This made Jerry Lee so mad, that he pushed the piano off the stage. Anyway, all his shows were cancelled in England, and he was ordered out of the Country. His last words for England - "England can Kiss My A**".Jerry Lee made a come-back, with an appearance on the Steve Allen show. He and Myra had a son Steve Allen Lewis (who later drowned) and a daughter who is still living.Anyway, it ends with Jerry Lee being at the Rev. Swaggard's church, where the Rev. was peaching directly to Jerry Lee, and about him playing "the Devil's Music". Jerry Lee gets up and says "Well If I'm going to Hell, I'm going there playing the piano". He and Myra leave the church. The movie soon ends.I grew up in this type of environment, and now I can say, thankfully attitudes about Rock & Roll have changed down here in Louisiana, and the "Bible Belt". Rock & Roll is now not necessarily regarded as the devil's music. It is generally accepted by everyone down here. Also, now Jerry Lee and his cousin the Rev. Jimmy Swaggart are not in conflict with one another. Jerry Lee usually performs some gospel songs in his concerts. Thanks!!!!!

Quaid Really Rocks In This Role!

This movie is just as good as The Buddy Holly Story and even Ritchie Valens' story, La Bamba. Dennis Quaid really got into the role of the Killer himself, Jerry Lee Lewis. Winona Ryder is also great playing his cousin/childbride, Myra. Alec Baldwin has a small role playing another cousin, Jimmy Swaggart. A fun movie all around. Worth owning just for the terrific soundtrack that includes most of Lewis' hits.

A Truly Bizarre Film Experience

This is a movie that, if it came out today, I would hate. As it stands, Ihave distance on it and I love it because it is unlike any other film evermade.Jim McBride as a director treats the material as a straight rock and rollfairy tale. That's why, if the characters in the movie were fictitious, thefilm would be a minor stylistic classic among film buffs. Akin to "DickTracy" for its production design or "Moulin Rouge" for its weaving of pophits into a broadly stroked love story. It would be beloved if only forthefew scenes between Dennis Quaid and Alec Baldwin (as Lewis' cousin, JimmySwaggart) playing polar archetypes. As it stands, however, "the people and events depicted herein are real."Even on a script level, the movie knows that Jerry Lee is a much worseperson than depicted in the film. Where the film alludes to Jerry Leebeinga general cheating womanizer and, at times, even a specifically cruelindividual to his young wife, the script points it out more evidently.Thatthe script largely demurs from the sometimes horrific moments that Lewisinstigated in his true life romance with Myra Gale Brown is enough to turnoff most viewers. That the film itself almost completely ignores Lewis'uglier traits (even while the script is acknowledging them) is why it isconsidered so uneven and, thus, unsuccessful. However, completelydetachedfrom those detestable facts, the film does offer some of the greatest rockmusic ever recorded, an appropriately rebellious, true lovin' rocker torecord it, and a soft-focus, easily-quotable rock and roll fantasy romancefor a screenplay. Combine those things with the unfortunate, incontrovertible truth and you have an exceptionally odd amalgam of amovie.P.S.: I'll add that I am a huge fan of Jerry Lee Lewis' music, so I admitthat I have one up on a viewer who is either uninitiated or is just plainnot a fan.

Killer Performer With An Odd Reputation

It all started in the mid 1940's a very young Jerry Lee Lewis (Dennis Quaid) and his Bible-thumping cousin Jimmy Swaggert (Alec Baldwin) eavesdrop into a dance hall in a segregated black community in the Southern part of the United States. Swaggert does not approve of this kind of music, claiming that it's music by the devil (for a well known fact, "Hound Dog" was not originally an Elvis Presley song it was written by Big Mama Thornton). But Lewis thinks this evil music is his meal ticket to stardom. By the 1950's was turning around, Lewis starting excelling this vile music which caught the attention of Sam Phillips, the guy who turned Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison and Johnny Cash into stars. Sure enough, Phillips was impressed with his raw energy, his fancy banging on the ivories and his charismatic charm. In 1958, Elvis takes some time off to join the army, and Lewis was on the verge to be the next King of Rock 'n' Roll. But those dreams went down the toilet when he married his 13 year old cousin Myra Gayle Brown (Winona Ryder). This ticks off the British press and the Americans aren't too pleased by this news. Dennis Quaid does an incredible job, even if he's not really singing. However, he shows how dynamic he is by banging those keys and providing the energy that made Lewis,"The Killer". The music was fun to listen to, but I'm a stickler for ballads. It's strange that his bad reputation caused radio stations to ban his music, though he can be heard on stations that play softer music like Rosemary Clooney, Ray Charles and Louis Armstrong. Young Winona Ryder shows her youthful charm as the confused teenage cousin/wife of Lewis. It was hilarious in the scene where Myra goes shopping for her wedding dress. I was impressed by Steve Allen's cameo as he looks younger from his days as the original host of the Tonight Show. Unknown actor Michael St. Gerard does an impressive impersonation of Elvis. The King doesn't say much, but the physical and mental portrayal. One great scene has Elvis in bed with a girl watching Lewis on the telly as he turns in another energetic performance and the girl is enjoying every moment of his presence. Some other archived footage of Lewis' TV performance being seen including the hilarious cameo of Ward and June Cleaver. The song "Patricia" by Perez Prado seems apropos for a scene where Jerry Lee and Myra ask themselves if they should tell Myra's parents about their marriage. The organ reflects the youthful demeanor while the jazzy trumpet is in connection to Lewis' raw energy and the booming of the trombones are representing the actions of how Mr. Brown will react after he hears the news of his little girl being married to a much older man. Sure the man pulled off some repulsive antics in his life, but the movie does everything in its power to make them seem tamer than it should have been. Overall I thought this was an entertaining biopic of another musician who's encountered the triumphant and troubling life of a musician.

"It's the devil's music. I can feel it".

About the time Myra Gale Brown would have been worrying about thehydrogen bomb destroying mankind, I was in parochial school doing duckand cover drills for the same reason. So even while Jerry Lee Lewis wasbecoming the Wild Man of Rock and Roll, I don't recall what a stir hewas causing with his 'savage animal rhythms' back in 1957. What I doknow is that it's impossible to sit still with a whole lotta shaking'going' on, and the rock and roll world is a lot better off for JerryLee having made his contribution. With that said, the film comes across as somewhat disappointing. Maybeit's Dennis Quaid's pouty and exaggerated portrayal, or maybe it's theseverely restricted view one gets of virtually a single year in thelife of the rock star. Perhaps a treatment in the style of "The BuddyHolly Story" or "La Bamba" might have fleshed out the singer a littlebetter, instead of subjecting us to the one dimensional character thatappears here from open to close. Some reviewers on this board insistthat this was Jerry Lee right from the get-go, but I find it hard tobelieve that his life wasn't more nuanced than the picture we get here. Not only that, but if comparisons were going to be drawn along sideElvis and Chuck Berry, then maybe we could have seen some interactionbetween Jerry and his contemporaries instead of the flip brush off hegave them in the story. Jerry and Berry jamming would have been a wholelot more fun to watch. But if you dig Jerry Lee's style of manic raunch and roll, you won'thear any better than what's on display in "Great Balls of Fire". JerryLee himself provides the vocal power to Quaid's ferocious delivery, theonly part of his over the top performance that rings true throughoutthe film.

I'm surprised "Alan Smithee" wasn't the ENTIRE CREW!!

First, I must explain that the name "Alan Smithee" is the pseudonym foranyone who doesn't want their name on the credits. (See also the TV Versionof David Lynch's "Dune", "The Shrimp on the Barbie", etc.) You're on IMDBright now, so you can look up everything by "Alan Smithee" and see the manypeople the name for which the name has covered.I don't know which was worse, this or "Wired". "Wired" was a horriblebiography movie that summed up everything everyone ALREADY KNEW about JohnBelushi.Wynona Ryder, Alec Baldwin, and Dennis Quaid may not have too many awards totheir names, but they are all excellent actors. Whoever was behind thecamera should have been flogged by the entire crew for desecrating theirskills and talents with this god-awful excuse for a biography. The actors were made to act horribly with horribly written lines to recite. The entire thing seemed to be a satire of itself. And the musical sceneswhere everyone outside the school are doing dance numbers with choreographyand other scenes where Dennis/"The Killer" is driving around and everyone'sbrushing their fingers to say "Shame on you"; apparently, the people incharge of this film had no idea what they wanted to make. Were they tryingto make another sequel to "Grease" (Even though "Grease II" was a totalloser) or were they trying to do a tribute to one of the most amazingmusicians of the 50's and 60's? It's a good thing that the headliners of this film (Dennis, Alec, andWynona) had other hit movies under their belts, otherwise it might havedestroyed their careers (Unless, of course, Dennis and Alec both took the"Alan" and maybe Wynona could take "Alice Smithee"). If you disagree, welldo you know anyone who knows anyone who's seen Patsy Kensit since"21"?An embarrassment to Jerry, an embarrassment to the cast and crew, anembarrassment to the viewer. Don't waste your money on this waste ofcelluloid; wait until VH1 does a bio on him on some "Legends" or "Behind theMusic" documentary.

Jerry Lee Lewis is the man!

This movie rocks and rolls from the very beginning. You see a young Jerry Lee being exposed to his early influences...to the making of a rock n roll star in Memphis, home of cool. Dennis does a fabulous job portraying Jerry Lee. All the way down to his mannerisms to those golden curly locks of hair! Just a great movie with an unbelieveable soundtrack too!

The "Killer" reigns

This film is awesome and wonderful. Jerry Lee Lewis,is one legendary music talent that still rocks. Winona Ryder plays a younger cousin Jerry scandalously marries.Alec Baldwin plays evangelist Jimmy Swaggart, another cousin related to Jerry. When you see Quaid rockin' at the piano,it is hot! Lewis wrote the great boppin' oldies we all love (Breathless, and many others). This film is a trip back to high School! I say bravo to Quaid for this remarkable music extravaganza,as he paints a sweet picture of a music Genius!

giopirozzi 13 April 2012

Sequel being planned!

The Title is "Middle Age Crazy". Dennis Quaid and Winona Ryder are onboard along with the rest of the original cast. Unfortunately we havelost the great Trey Wilson and Lisa Blount, but Alec Baldwin will playJimmy Swaggart again, which should be great because this will be duringthe years leading up to his scandal. Rumor has it that John Travoltawill play Mickey Gilley (a little wink to Urban Cowboy) and Sean Pennas Lewis' guitar player Kenny Lovelace. The movie starts with Jerry Lee Lewis' Live at the Star Club in Hamburgconcert in 1964 and I believe ends in 1986 when he gets inducted intothe Rock n' Roll Hall of fame. This is going to be a treat for realfans of Lewis who enjoy his country music. We are going to get his 1968top ten single "Another Place, Another Time" along with "What's MadeMilwaukee Famous, "She Still Comes Around (To Love What's Left of Me)","Me & Bobby McGee" and of course 1977's "Middle Age Crazy". The scenesof Quaid as Lewis in North Hollywood's Palomino Club, Country Music'smost important West Coast club during the 70's and 80's is going to beepic. This should be in production by 2012.

Debate What's Real but the Film is Great Fun

Great Balls of Fire! (1989)**** (out of 4) Terrific bio-pic follows Jerry Lee Lewis (Dennis Quaid) as he quicklyrises up the charts and appears to be about to take over the king ofrock 'n roll from Elvis but the media and fans turn on him when theydiscover that he's married to his 13-year-old cousin (Winona Ryder). For the life of me I'll never understand some of the negative reviewsthis film gets. Yes, Lewis had a pretty hard life full of violence, drugs, alcohol and various other items that really don't get shown herebut the point of this movie wasn't to be a dark and disturbing movieabout abuse but instead it was a movie about the glories of rock 'nroll and on that level the movie is a grand slam with great music andgreat performances. There's no denying that it appears the spirit ofLewis got into Quaid because he delivers a remarkable performance andit's a real shame that he didn't even get an Oscar-nomination. It'svery hard for any actor to try and play a personality like Lewis butQuaid has no trouble and in my opinion delivers one of the bestperformances by an actor playing a real-life person. The spirit, fireand energy he brings to the film is just remarkable and each time Iview the film the performance impresses me even more. He gets a strongsupporting cast to work with him with Ryder also turning in a greatperformance as she really captures the spirit of a 13-year-old who getscaught up with his older cousin and his lifestyle. Stephen Tobolowskyand Trey Wilson are terrific as the Phillips brothers and we get AlecBaldwin in nice form playing Lewis' cousin Jimmy Swaggart. The moviefeatures Lewis doing his own singing and piano playing and it's just soenergetic that you'll have no problem shaking your leg and wanting toget up and dance. The soundtrack features all his classic tunes andthey sound remarkably well and pack one terrific punch. Again, therewere several very dark years in the career of Lewis but this filmreally doesn't look at them and I don't have a problem with it. Mostmusic bios are full of the dark stuff so it's rather refreshing to seesomething that has fun with the subject matter. Yes, a dark film couldhave been made about the alcohol. Yes, a dark film could have madeabout the marriage. This film could have done a lot of things but whatit does is deliver entertainment and an energy that is hard to top.
