Smart but a bit smart for its own good.

It's refreshing to see a teen movie that is actually for teenagers andis not diluted to appeal to young girls. Just like how it was in theeighties- and eighties films are referenced quite a bit in Easy A.The title is clever, witty, and has a bit of attitude. However, Easy Adoes not entirely live up to the promise of its title. It's anintelligent off-beat film for the most part but the director and writerkeep congratulating themselves on their wit and quirkiness so oftenthat the film begins to grate. There's also an unpleasant snarky toneto the whole proceedings. Olive (Emma Stone), our slutty protagonistwho is not really a slut, is frequently bitchy to pretty much everyother character, except her 'favourite teacher'(it's not a euphemismbut the film would be much funnier if it was). She has a massivesuperiority complex, using every excuse to show off her wit andpretentious intellect. Apparently this film is supposed to beindicative of our generation, and it is, in the sense that everybody isself-obsessed. Despite the protagonist being sour, Emma Stone brings abit of attitude to the film and perhaps indicates that Olive is just asself-absorbed as everybody else. The film's premise has parallels with 19th century American classic TheScarlet Letter, in which a woman is persecuted and forced to wear an Aas a symbol of her adultery, whilst the man is not punished at all. However the filmmakers seem to have got confused about what adulterymeans, as they keep saying that Olive is an adulterer whereas heractual sin is supposed sluttiness. The film's attempt to convey thereligious themes of the novel does not really pay off. I'm notreligious at all but I found the obsession with attacking religiouszealots rather sour and a distraction from a promising, albeitimplausible, comic premise. So, school report for this film: intelligent, but a big attitudeproblem.

A spoonful of sugar

This review is from: Easy A (Amazon Instant Video) I've been out of HS for some time, and things and technology have changed...but people haven't as this movie does a fun job of pointing out.

the reason we watch films like this is because they are fun!

You know that one film that you watch and, even though you know it's not a film that will win awards, the film becomes your favorite? That one movie that delights and entertains you beyond what is reasonable? A movie that you wouldn't grow tired of seeing a hundred times? A movie that picks you up when you are feeling down and makes you realize that you are having fun? "Easy A" is precisely that film. It isn't the best movie you will ever see, but it is a solid film, with a nearly pitch-perfect script and a superb cast (Emma Stone is outstanding and can hold her own in the company of Patricia Clarkson, Stanley Tucci, Lisa Kudrow, and Malcolm McDowell). This in one high school movie that portrays the annals of high school as much as makes fun of all the pretenses of high school. The film scores a well-earned "A" (pun intended).

Unbelievable and not very funny, but Emma Stone is so terrific it almost works

This was hailed by some as being a cut above the average high schoolcomedy. Its star, Emma Stone, starred in what is perhaps my favoritehigh school movie, Superbad. This one may be better than the averagehigh school comedy, but it's not especially great, either. I obviouslywasn't a girl in high school, and it's been over a decade since I'vebeen there, but the events in this movie just don't come close to myactual high school experience. If you don't know the story, it's abouta girl, Stone, who invents a sexual partner, and immediately becomesknown as a slut around the school. Then she starts to pretend to bestupping a bunch of losers so they become more popular. When I went toschool, any girl who looked like Emma Stone or the other gals in thismovie, you'd kind of assume they were having sex (Hell, any girl whodressed like these girls, even before Stone embraces her inner slut, would probably be sent home to change, and my high school was prettydang liberal). It might make guys like me upset because we could neverhave them, and it might make the ugly girls jealous, but would it everhave been as big a deal as it is in this movie? Not much of it seemedbelievable to me. It's worst offense, though, is that it just isn't allthat funny. There are a few good laughs, but otherwise, it's kind ofdull. Yet I didn't come close to hating it. Emma Stone, for one thing,is exceptional. Even when the writing is poor, she sells it. She's justgot some wonderful comic timing, and her eyes are wonderfullyexpressive. I also absolutely love Patricia Clarkson and Stanley Tuccias her goofy parents. I really wish they had gotten more time. Instead, they spend a lot of time on a really bizarre and underdeveloped subplotinvolving her teacher (Thomas Hayden Church), who is married to theschool guidance counselor (Lisa Kudrow).

Stone's charisma sells her preternaturally mature character and makes the script's snarky, pop culture-referencing dialogue snap.

Thomas Leupp 08 May 2012

Emma Stone earns extra credit in this otherwise uneven comic take on 'The Scarlet Letter.

All of these positive reviews are misleading.

I personally wouldn't recommend this film. Don't get me wrong, it started off alright, but halfway through it started getting bad, not better, and then ended up horribly. I don't understand these 5 star reviews, I honestly don't. The acting was good, but the script was terrible. And the ending just blew.

Alistair Harkness 04 May 2012

Like an insecure teen, this is a film that has no confidence in what it really has going for it, and instead projects an unnecessary air of false bravado.

The legacy of John Hughes is alive and well...

A wonderful homage to the John Hughes era of 'coming of age' film, thatmanages to be as smart, quirky, engaging and respective of itsaudience. Emma Stone is fabulous as the smart, strong willed lead whodecides to defy the establishment but doesn't fully anticipate theconsequences. Amanda Bynes was perfect as the prissy god botherer, asis Patricia Clarkson and Stanley Tucci who are the cool parents we allwish were (or had) and Thomas Haden Church is great as theinspirational teacher who really gets his students. They are backed upwith a tonne of other great supporting actors. A wonderful film youSHOULD watch with all the family.

Love this movie

This review is from: Easy A (DVD) I don't buy a lot of movies but after renting this I knew it was one I would want to watch more than once. It's a little like mean girls, except Emma Stone is a much smarter, funnier, cuter, and more likeable version of Lindsey Lohan. And all the supporting actors add so much to the film, it's a must see!

A Smart and Sexy teen comedy

Easy A (2009) Starring Emma Stone, Penn Badgley, Amanda Bynes, Stanley Tucci, Patricia Clarkson, Lisa Kudrow, Thomas Hayden Church and Aly Michalkla.Easy A centers in beautiful, sunny Ojai, California. Among them is a smart, witty and under-the-radar teen Olive (Emma Stone) reminiscent of Veronica Sawyer from Heathers (1988) [

The Best Highschool Movie since Mean Girls

...Or it least in My Opinion. I know what your thinking, Not another teen movie ! Well, and your probably right. That was exactly my idea when I first heard of this film. My thoughts were : Ok, it's gonna be cheesy, boring and completely unbelievable. I was having a headache, I didn't have anything to do and I wanted to watch this movie just to kill time. However, I have to say this film has got me by surprise ! I guess I underestimated this movie a lot which only proves that you really shouldn't judge the book by its cover. Olive (Emma Stone) is a highschool student in California. She's unpopular, anonymous and completely lost in a 6000+ Highschool. However, because of one single lie Olive's life, reputation and popularity is going to witness some drastic changes. I don't want to give any spoilers. I think this movie is a "great" Example on How one lie could lead to another and another till things get really complicated. It's also a good story about how "Rumors" can really be deceiving. At first I didn't really "sympathize" with Olive it's true she didn't mean for this whole thing to start, she was put into the spot light unwillingly but she didn't do anything to stop it, she actually made it bigger because of some unwise, stupid choices but then I forgave her for it because she saw her mistake eventually. I would recommend this movie to anyone who's currently in high school, I'm sure they will feel very related to the entire story. If your out of high school already, I would suggest you give this movie a try, I'm no longer in HS but watching the film, I had a lot of memories of my HS days the whole gossip, drama and stupidity of teenagers. It just brought back a sense of nostalgia. Overall, great movie and I liked the message behind it. I know some things are made way over the top like there's NO way a school principle is ever going to allow a group of students to yell insults publicly in front of the school building to a particular student's face, but once again it's a movie and even though it won't happen in real life sometimes unspoken words could hurt more than spoken once. I have to agree With Olive, I totally think Pop-Rallys were stupid I'm not so much of a poprally person either but we gotta go out of class so all's fine ;)

Emma Stone's secular heroine stands up to her detractors in this discriminative and cliché heavy teen comedy.

Better than the average High School comedy

This is an enjoyable comedy marked by excellent performances and aslightly dark take on at the problems of High School life.Emma Stone is an unremarkable student who, by accident, gets thereputation for being a slut (She isn't). In some ways she is glad ofthe attention and plays along with the reputation. However this onlyleads to bigger problems.I've liked Stone in films such as "Zombieland" and "Superbad" and hereagain she plays her smart and sarcastic character well so that we havesympathy for her, even though we may not agree with all her decisions. There good performances from Thomas Haden Church and Lisa Kudrow asteachers. However Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson almost steal theshow as Stone's laid back parents. It looks like they had a ballplaying their parts.A small quibble is the casting of obviously twenty something actorssuch as Stone and Penn Badgley as High School students. As expected there is a share of hugging and learning towards the end ofthe film but that is only to be expected in this genre. It is awell-written and acted comedy that doesn't shove its message at theviewer too hard.

Easy A GET'S an Easy A!

A sexless, sex comedy about an average student named Olive, who, afterlie's about having a one night stand with a college to her friend,Rhiannon so Olive doesn't have to go camping with her, ends up beingheard by the school's Christian snob, Marianne. After a twist ofdifferent rumours, Olive decides to go WITH the rumours, instead ofstopping them. Guys end up charging Olive so they can SAY that theyslept with her, but actually they didn't. And of course, the rumourget's out of hand in some hilarious ways. The movie title goes so well with the movie. In most movies, it onlymanages to get so far with the storytelling, but this movie takes it'sfull advantage of the story, with hardly any flaws. It's a mix of MeanGirls and Juno. It has a lot of gossip and sexual remarks, and also aquirky main character with clever and hilarious lines. Amanda Bynes isexcellent, as usual as Marianne. Olive's parents are very clueless towhat's going on and are a hoot every time they're on screen. There aresome lines in here that you'll be repeating. I cannot wait for thismovie to come to Bluray. The only flaw is the ending. It could havebeen more constructed with a better conclusion. The rest of the movieis so good that the ending doesn't matter. This is, by far one of thebest movies of 2010 and probably one of my personal favourites of alltime!

First of all, let me say I HATE... the title of this movie

Aside from my hatred of the title, the movie itself was an awesomeexperience. I am a fan of Emma Stone already, so I may be biased, butshe is wonderful in this movie (and sexy too!). The comedy was snappyand fresh and there even was a message hidden deep in the movie whereyou cant find it without actually looking. The acting was well done andI thought the movie was well cast. The story kept coming up withsurprises that kept me engaged. I left the movie with a feeling ofsatisfaction, and isn't that what every moviegoer wants? Oh... and whydo I hate the title of the movie? Because it had NOTHING to do withgetting grades! I don't know what other title would have been good forit, however.

I didn't really buy the words coming out of the mouth of a precocious 17-year-old, I still enjoyed knowing somebody uttered them.

A smart, fun movie

Emma Stone is the revelation here. What a great performance! She plays a modern day Hester Prynne, but with a twist. There are times when the writing gets a little too cutesy, but on the whole it's a smart, comedy that is surprising, quirky, and charming. I highly recommend!

an easy A indeed

Easy A actually turned out to be a very funny comedy starring the beautiful Emma Stone. I was expecting nothing more than a typically written teenage storyline involving relationship troubles. No, it's honestly quite different from the norm. It's about Emma Stone's character struggling to find where she stands in the world and wants to find a decent guy to have a relationship with. Well one thing leads to another and she eventually goes down a darker path. After a few experiences, a plan develops (unexpectedly) where she pretends to sleep with the guys around her school for money. She's not really sleeping with them though, but for the sake of the guys reputation (who would like nothing more than to be considered cool so their friends believe they just scored with a chick) she goes through with pretending to sleep with them. It's not a dirty plot or anything though. The amount of swear words is kept to a minimum, and there's no actual nudity. The focus is most definitely on humor and clever storyline twists. Anyway, while this is going on, Emma's character has to deal with other people at school. Some of them she likes, others she flat out despises. A sassy religious girl is one of the classmates she despises, however a reliable male friend of hers is someone Emma always turns to for help. Emma's parents are about as whacked out as one can imagine, haha. There's a lot of clever writing as far as the storyline goes, especially once the guidance counselor makes an appearance. Her involvement is really surprising and really pushes this film to a solid 5 stars. Overall, Emma Stone is as impressive and believable in character form as one can expect, and the storyline is always enticing.
