good to great

the movie has a slow pace and kind of all over the place. but it was afun experience since I have rarely went to a full packed movie place. First, the acting was good, but it somehow detract from the story quitea bit. I understand that the director and screenwriter has limitedperception of which movie to make, but this is rather a thriller than afantasy. IT supposed to be a fantasy and they make it somehow atwilight which does not really compliment the movie.Having said that ron and hermione really pull strings on the actingbit, harry was a little bit of but it was overall good. The romanticscene is pulled just to bring a bit of comedy which does not make itstands out like the book does.Anyway this is not the book and frankly, I do not think anyone couldmake the book comes alive. two hours and more is quite a long time tobe drawn into a story that you love but it is still seems like a betterbook than a movie. I like the animation sequence, seems like what tim burton would havemade better but nonetheless, impressive. supporting cast is fun andbrings out england's finest on center stage. I do hope the second would be better, and it would be fun to see howthe ending scene would be made. After all, this might just be thebeginning of a long journey for the next generation to make an evenbetter harry potter on the silver screen. Maybe another 15 years woulddo the trick.

Amazing Dark Sequel.

It's a good start to the epic finale. The whole film is dark andgritty, filled with death, violence, and suspense. At the verybeginning, the trio were young and unskilled. They never been to suchdangerous situations before. Each year passed, they were getting closerto death as they fight for their lives. They survived some unimaginablebattles, witnessed shocking things, and learned such dangerous spellsin order to defend themselves against the dark art. Now they are readyto fight.Harry Potter is one of them. First year, he learned about a powerfulstone and met a murderer of his deceased parents for the first time.Second year, he learned the dark lord's true identity and the truthbehind the incident at Hogwart. Third year, he found out about the darklord's plan in the past and the betrayal between those who areconnected to his parents. Fourth year, he survived three dangeroustasks at such a young age and witnessed the return of the dark lord.Fifth year, he joined the rebellion and tried to convince everyone thatdark lord's return is true until the end they saw him with their owneyes. Sixth year, he learned about the dark lord's past and how todefeat him for good. And now, he has a quest from Professor Dumbledore:Search for the rest of the dark objects made by the dark lord anddestroy them. But he is not going alone. He is with his friends. Theymust complete the quest and stop the dark lord once and for all in thefinal chapter of Harry Potter franchise.About the film, everything in there are pretty much what I expectedfrom the book. Few character's death are sad. A couple of them gave megoosebumps. One of the scenes made me jump which is a giant snake,Nagini, suddenly popping out of the staircase as if it's coming at you. That one got me. The whole sequence of Godric's Hollow is creepy, especially the creepy old lady named Bathilda Bagshot sneaking around.lol Action scenes are amazingly good. The animation of three brothersis stunning, reminds me of Tim Burton's artwork. I'm bit disappointedthat a few good scenes were cut. Even though some good parts from thebook were not included in the film. Well, that's okay. I enjoyed thefilm.Overall, I gave it 9 out of 10. Amazing. Stunning. Mesmerizing. Almostperfect.I cannot wait for the second part. Bring it on July!

Where to they get those wonderful Tents?

Being a Potter fan since childhood, I'm not exactly looking forward toseeing it end, but would still not have missed this for the world. Atthe same time, I do not let my love for the franchise affect byjudgement of the film.'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' is by far my least favouritebook in the series. It's the only one I actually disliked having lovedevery instalment before (especially Goblet of Fire). The book draggedon for far too long, and the ending was predictable and dry.Fortunately, the film put some punch into the first half of the story, creating a tense and emotional adventure. This film is by far the darkest in the series, which I felt suited thestory very well. It begins with the characters in a clearly hopelesssituation, and ends with even less chance of success. The beginning waspowerful, with a heartbreaking scene of Hermione being forced to eraseherself from her parents' life, and a brilliantly chilling sceneinvolving Voldemort and his followers. The cinematography is veryadvanced, and the series has come a long way since it began. I felt itwas a beautifully made film, and if they had gotten every elementright, the potential to have been the best in the series. In terms of acting, Daniel Radcliffe has improved greatly (never been abig fan), but his acting still felt wooden and too different to thecharacter of Harry in the book. Rupert Grint and Emma Watson playedtheir characters perfectly, and the chemistry between them is a joy towatch. There was absolutely NO bad acting here. The performance thatstood out the most for me was Ralph Fiennes chilling portrayal ofVoldemort. He completely out-did himself in this film, creating avillain actually superior to the one written in the book. But, the pacing of the film was fairly poor. The first half-an-hour wasperfect, but the film felt very unstable after that. A problem I hadwith the book (the camping sections) were toned down in the film, butstill a problem. Until the ending of the film, the characters reallyhad no idea what they were doing, and most of their successes were fromsheer luck. There was a beginning, but the middle and end did not seento exist. I appreciate this is Part 1, but the lack of completion is ahit to the movie. I was not particularly overwhelmed by the filmeither, despite the fact that this is the finale. But there was plenty I loved. The scene in the ministry of magic wasvery funny and entertaining, the few scenes involving Voldemort and theDeath Eaters were chilling, the acting was excellent, and the actionsequences and CGI were well-done.Deathly Hallows Part Two arrives in Cinemas summer 2011, and I havefaith it will improve on the pace and quality of this decent but slowbeginning.

Harry the fugitive

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows, Part I finds young Harry playedby Daniel Radcliffe and his posse Rupert Grint and Emma Watsonfugitives after a palace coup at Hogwarts. The academy of magic hasbeen taken over by Professor Rufus Snape after headmaster Dumbledorehas been killed. It's not just that Harry and his friends know toomuch, it's that Harry has a mysterious connection with the mysteriousblack lord Voldemort, the evil genius behind all the bad thingshappening. And Voldemort is quite anxious to sever the connection andsever young Mr. Potter from immortality. In this next to last of the Harry Potter series the familiar cast goesthrough their usual paces as young Harry and his friends are exiledfrom Hogwarts and have to live by their wits, knowledge of magic, andthe help of friends. The Deathly Hallows refer to three charmed objectsthat he must destroy to keep Voldemort from taking over the world ofmagic. This film received Academy Award recognition with Oscar nominations forBest Visual Effects and Best Art Direction. One thing the Potter filmshave done is certainly brought an appreciation of Charles Dickens tothe young. After you've read J.K. Rowling's work, you will love howshe's given such descriptive names to her characters in the way Dickensused to. And if Harry Potter isn't a 21st reincarnation of DavidCopperfield, then I don't know my Dickens.

Amazing.

Amazing! Harry Potter returns with this fantastic new movie based onthe book, but unfortunately it's part one. But I guess the benefit isthat Harry Potter doesn't end yet. A benefit for the filmmakers too, asthey may make more money.I didn't enjoy the lack of action, though. Since the move precedingthis one, I have not seen much action, or fighting. The beginning, there was fighting, but that seemed to be it. It simply seemed to bethat the movie was about characters walking around in a forest andhiding. There was a pretty action-backed, and suspenseful and sad sceneat the end of the movie, but it wasn't enough.Ignoring this, I can see why this is an amazing movie, and that is whyit deserves such a high rating.

Harry Potter done right?

If you enjoy the other Harry Potter films…even if you just like thebooks of Harry Potter…you'll love this movie! This was part 1 of a twopart series of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." I honestlyexpected this movie to be action packed with all wands blazing withwar...mainly because until now...I didn't know what the books wereabout, lol. Now that I know what the books are about, it's easy to seewhy the first movie was not as action packed as I originally thought. This movie was demonstrating that, even through the most difficulttimes...true friends will always be there. Interestingly enough...therewere a few awkward scenes in the movie with the character Hermione andHarry. I'm not going to go into detail, because it may ruin the moviefor you...but I'll just say that it seems like they are trying to forma love triangle with Ron, Harry, and Hermione. I could be wrong...butthe movies seem to be headed that direction. Overall...it was prettyamazing! Definitely something you do NOT want to miss while it's intheaters! This is what we have been waiting for

The Harry Potter series has inspired generations. I grew up with thebooks and the movies. As I grew, the characters, both fictional andactual actors grew with me. This instillation of the Harry Potter movieseries is what I have been waiting for. The growth of the series andthe actors is at its most mature and impressive in this movie. Theacting has transformed from children playing character to actorstransforming into a role. The growth of the performance is extremelyastounding and the newest movie will leave any Harry Potter loversatisfied, but even those who are not Harry Potter inclined will beimpressed. The way the movie balances the heavy content with humor isso adept and creates the perfect cinematic experience. I am soimpressed and excited about the accomplishments of this series.

Harry Potter & The World's Longest Camping Trip

You can't really critique these films. They are more than films. Theyare visual translations of a cultural phenomenon. They just can't bejudged on their cinematic merit alone. I haven't read the books andhave no desire to. I have, however, seen all the films. In this (half)film I missed some of my favorite profs from previous outings, especially Maggie Smith and Michael Gambon (who is seen but hardlyfigures). The villains are really the juice of this final chapter, withHelena Bonham Carter, Ralph Fiennes, and Alan Rickman chewing thescenery in grand style. At one point I wanted to dub this film "HarryPotter and the World's Longest Camping Trip". Enough with the teenangst already. Although the impromptu dance sequence between Harry andHermione is perhaps the film's one touch of humanity - giving the duo arare moment to be kids, and not muggledom and magic's 'last greathope'. Dobby, too, is in rare form, with his CG denouement played outto perfection. But greed got the better of the studio and led them tostretch a single novel into two films. I would have preferred it hadthey left on a high note and let us experience Harry's last stand inone fell swoop, but the fans won't mind - like the film itself, it justprolongs the inevitable ending of a cultural icon.

Where's the Magic?

I saw this film on the first day it came out. As I was watching it, Iwas shocked to see how dark it was. At about a half-hour through, therewas already two deaths. This is the darkest Harry Potter film in myopinion. My other problem was that there was not much magic andimagination in this one. I missed the quidditch matches and enchantedthings. This film was all about traveling and hiding. I eventually gotbored watching the trio travel from place to place, setting up a tent.Don't get me wrong, this is a great film (as all of the Harry Pottermovies were). Despite the negative things about this movie, there werea lot of positive things as well. There was comedy and tons of action. And I love the little cliffhanger at the end. Overall, pretty goodmovie! Totally recommend it.

I confess myself disappointed

I'm a huge fan of the Harry Potter series, both the movies, and thebooks, and I'm afraid that this one didn't shine, it was merelyadequate.First, there are many themes that continue through the books, and theyweren't followed in the movie. Normally, I would say that this is justsomebody being picky, but I was let down. Each book starts with a scenewith the Dursleys, and although I was moderately disappointed with theabsence of Dumbledore's lecture to the Dursleys at the beginning of theHalf Blood Prince, I was OK with it. But to eliminate Dudley's farewellto Harry to me was scandalous! I knew it would be in the specialfeatures of the DVD, however, it was poorly acted, poorly directed, andlooked like an afterthought. It was a conclusion to a main subplot andit's absence did not go unnoticed.I was unhappy in general with the adaptation to film, and thedirecting. The scene on Privet drive when all of the order and friendscome to take Harry for example. The dialogue seems unnatural andawkward, as well when Harry tries to sneak away from the burrow and Roncatches him, when Harry was speaking to Elphias Doge. In my opinion, somebody on set should have told Daniel Radcliffe to stop flashing hisleft hand every time he wanted to look serious. And finally, there were too many things that weren't taken care of in aproper order, and instead needed to be thrown in haphazardly. Forexample, Bill mentioning being bitten by Grayback, Ron spurting out,"Did you say you needed a wand? I got one!". And it would only havetaken a second longer for Harry and Ron to have their text dialogueafter Ron returned (when Ron says"Dumbledore knew I'd leave", to whichHarry says "He knew you'd want to come back"). I feel like that was anunnecessary change that takes from character development. And I was very disappointed when Mundungus Flecher just looked down atan old newspaper and pointed out Delores Umbridge. It was so poorlydone. He could have said anything there, "Short woman, dressed in pink, with this sickening little giggle".But nothing disappointed me more than Dobby's death scene. It was tooquick. He died, Luna closed his eyes, then Harry blurts out how hewants to bury him.The whole thing just seemed too rushed, as if they didn't take the timeto ensure that the writing was complete, and the scenes were filmedproperly. As well, as much as I love Bill Nighy, I feel like Scrimgeour shouldhave been played by Peter Mullan. Just saying. Personally, I thing BillNighy should have played Olivander, and John Hurt should have playedXenophilius Lovegood.I still enjoy the movie though. I just hope that I get the sense ofconclusion that I want out of the second part.

THE FIX FOR VIDEO ON DEMAND DARK SCREENS

This review is from: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 (Amazon Instant Video) I rented HARRY POTTER last night (Sunday, first weekend of availablity, so very heavy useage.) I watched the movie LATE, about 3am on the east coast, so I had none of the problems when overuse will lock up the signal. (I had the film streaming into my one year old laptop from a wifi hooked into a high speed phone line modem. From the laptop, I ran a hookup to a 32" LCD TV.) People worried about lockup of the picture during high demand times, might try to download the film instead of streaming it, at a time when you KNOW the peak use is down. AS FOR THE DARK SCREEN, i encountered that the first time I rented a video on demand. I had bought INCEPTION from AMAZON, and got a free rental of the film. COOL! SO, i started the film, and my screen was mostly just...DARK. I could hear the opening music, but nearly no picture. I tried to fix it on the LCD TV, but that didnt help. THE FIX FOR A DARK SCREEN. IF you look at the top of your laptop/computer (I'm running windows 7) you will notice TOOLS. Click on, and you will notice COMPATABILITY VIEW on the list of options. CLICK ON COMPATIBILITY VIEW. This lightened up the picture, to normal viewing. NOW, as for pixelation. I believe that's an artifact of the limits of transmission. When you have a "DARK" movie, it can be annoying, tho I only "noticed" the problem at first. Your eyes or brain will adjust. I dont have the option to rent videos, because my small city has NO VIDEO STORES, except for grocery store video kiosks. Let's be realistic. If you want HI DEF/ blu-ray reception, you cant get that via Video on demand. I dont think the servers, or the modems, or even maybe the computer processors, have the power...YET. This is new technology for the most part. WE ALL NEED TO GET USED TO WATCHING FILMS LIKE THIS, cos it IS the future. Just be patient with yourself, and AMAZON, until we all figure out how to get things to work. If you get a black/dark screen, and the FIX VIA "TOOLS" at the top of the page, for COMPATABILITY VIEW doesnt work, try to pull your BRIGHTNESS CONTROLL all the way to LIGHT. I think this works via the computer, and the TV as well. I SUGGEST YOU WATCH THE COMING ATTRACTION for the POTTER film, and get this bug ironed out then, if you expect a problem. If the COMING ATTRACTION doesnt look correct, and you dont want to chance it, or your have an older system with a slow processor, simply dont rent the film over the internet. Now, as for the HARRY POTTER FILM "DEATHLY HALLOWS PT 1." I had no problem with the split. HEY, i lived thru LORD OF THE RINGS getting split in ways that drove me up a wall. BUT who is going to watch a 5 hour version of Deathly Hallows, and who wants to see the last book get over edited? The last book is too important. ALSO, "Harry Potter" isnt a kid anymore. The films have been dark, since the death at the tournement. I think that was the first REAL death. POTTER 7 has an ORWELL's 1984 vibe, with the way the ministry of Magic was taken over. That was forshadowed when Hogwarts was taken over. ALSO, the 10-12 year olds that liked the first movie/book, are older now. HARRY and company are literally warriors now. They can only expect a warrior's life. AND, we have seen this building for some time in the films. THIS IS A DARK FILM, and not just with the pallet of colors. Its about an orphan, its about evil taking over the world, its about oppression of Moggles (read: jews, blacks, the poor, etc). If your kid is 10 years old, NO WAY is this film for them. YOUNGER KIDS should be allowed to watch the first 3 films, UNTIL THEY GROW UP A BIT. Unlike the LOTR, this is a very episodic series, that doesnt really depend on the previous book for the plot, UNTIL you reach films #3 or #4. IF this film were NOT dark, it would not have the depth of emotion. THIS IS HARRY POTTER AT WAR, troup movements, living in tents, visiting bombed out buildings and graves, its DARK STUFF for youngsters. HEY...rent MEGAMIND if you want "LIGHT"entertainment. WELL, lets get ready for JULY, and the LAST FILM, then we can put our elm wands away, and wait for the next BIG THING. (hopefully the Hobbit?)

Yates Again

Usually I enjoy David Yates films and expected this newer installment to be better but I found that it was both enjoyable and boring at the same time.I have no beef with the actors, just David. Why in heavens name would he be attached to this final story? I thought that the Order of the Phoenix could have been so much better in the long run.R.W Todd -author of The Madness of Avlon Klynn

A dark time for Harry

Most people can read the Amazon write-up or other reviews and already get to know the gist of this movie and what it is about. I will not write a full page review like some reviews so lets get down to it. Things you need to know if you didn't already know these facts.1. Yes, this is a slow paced movie. It is build-up for the final battle. (An entire movie, mostly bent around one task)2. Some character you like/love will die. Nuff said there.3. Some scenes are definately NOT for young children. (Bellatrix scene interrogating Hermione is a good example)4. Ron...What was he thinking? I don't think a friend, especially one who has been through so much, would act this way. But...that is a personal observation. Would have liked to see more bonding. Not in a weird way but in a best friends way.5. Not enough Harry and Ginny. I don't know why but they just seem so right together. 6. 146 minutes folks. It is a kind of long movie. There isn't a lot more to say other than I found it fully enjoyable through multiple viewings over the weekend and as long as you know some of the facts, I hope you will enjoy it too. A must buy for the fans. A must rent for anyone else who might just be following the story.

Nothing to remember

I watched this movie like a year ago, and had no interest to re-watchit, so this review is totally based on my already faded memory. Don'tget me wrong, my memory faded not because I have problems rememberingthing, but because this movie has nothing much to remember. To start, this Part 1 is totally different from the previous 6 HarryPotter movies. There is no Hogwarts, no Quidditch, no funny lessons. The film is set with very dark tone and theme, with visuals full offear and loathing, doom and gloom. No more guidance from Dumbledore, nomore protection from the adult wizards, it's the story of our threekids out on the streets, by themselves, trying to find and destroysomething called "Horcruxes". Most of the time what they do iswandering in the forest, arguing, being jealous of each other, and ourpoor Harry sometimes hold his head in pain because of the Dark LordVoldemort. The supporting cast did great, as usual, but too bad, theTrio takes most of the screen time and I can't get enough of myfavorite evil side Snape by Alan Rickman and Bellatrix by Helena BonhamCarter.Being Part 1 of 2, it goes without saying that there is very littleclosure come the film's finale, which despite being long-overdue withinthe lengthy 146-minute runtime, arrives with no climax. To be honest, there's still a lot of fun to be had, such as a gripping infiltrationin to Ministry of Magic and a terrifying confrontation with Voldemort'spet-snake Nagini, and a fairy tale about the Deathly Hallows, butoverall, it does not come close to expectation. For more reviews, please visit: http://voicemotion.wordpress.com/

Don't Know How I Felt About This Movie

I really wasn't sure what to feel watching this movie. Having read thebook, I knew the story, who the characters where, and what was going tohappen. But it was still emotionally confusing. There isn't really amoment in this movie where you're allowed to fully feel the moment ofwhat is happening. For every moment that should be happy or triumphant, such as Ron breaking the horcrux, you immediately have a scenereminding the characters of the sobering reality of their situation. The story piles on hardship after hardship. The action move very fast, with some of the sequences I enjoyed in the book going by so quick Ididn't feel like I had the chance to savor them and look for all thedetails I had waited for (the first chase when Harry leaves home, forexample). And that's pretty much how it continued. And actually that'sbasically how the book went. So you can say that this movie wasextremely faithful to the source material, probably as much as any filmadaption ever has been. I think I was maybe looking for the movie toprovide something that the book didn't--maybe to help me realize how Ifelt about this story which just seemed to happen, without allowing meto feel a proper release after all the buildup. I am excited for part2, even knowing how everything will turn out, but this time I won'texpect the film to solve any of my issues for me.

Very disappointing

This review is from: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1 (DVD) I did not like the movie at all. It felt like someone very inexperienced made the movie. The storyline was weak and seem to stretch on forever. Maybe it was because the movie was only a part one... I don't know. If you are looking for entertainment, I would skip it.

Definitely this one is the motion picture of the year!!!

Steve cloves+David Yates = Another perfect harry potter movieThis movie is definitely the best movie for David Yates. Though theprevious Harry Potter movie was not that great, Yates carves this oneto a masterpiece. The audience via this movie come to know , thatnowhere is safe and the ease with which the death eaters spot the lead.I bet you really love the intensity in the gripping screenplay. Andthere are more than 3 occasions where many can't stop them from holdingtheir seats. This flick will be even more exiting if you watch in 3d.The key-porting scenes, the snake-fight scene will increase youradrenaline . And you'll be like , "whats gonna happen next!!!!!"Love= Visual effects ,Action , Performance, Screen play , DirectionHate= almost nothing ,except for a stretchy screen play in betweenDefinitely this one is the motion picture of the year !!!!

a good movie , better than i expected

I just got back from watching the movie and seeing that the last time iread the book was in 2007 , i didn't quite remember the details , and ienjoyed it more than i usually do while watching a new harry pottermovie due to the fact that i didn't know what is gonna happen . in thismovie David yates was more than i expected , the movie focused on themain points , a bit too tall , you feel like you are watching a seriesnot a movie , the effects are brilliant so is the music , the acting iswell done , and they try to make a dark side in the movie , what i alsoreally liked is the sudden images and the stunts that give the movie aspooky theme , this movie seems deeper , and the journey is exciting ,David yates still has his flaws and they are clear in the movie , butexperience has done him good. I am sure that every one who was in thecinema with me , is currently reading the rest of the book , and i amon the edge of my seat waiting for the next movie , although i am surethat i ll be crying at the end , cause next time i watch a new harrypotter movie would be the last time!

Dark and disappointing

Not your usual Harry Potter movie. Many scenes were dark and hard to see. Plot was murky at best. Hope the sequel is much better.

Glenn Soltes 24 April 2012

Mildly entertaining mishmash

This movie was mildly entertaining, but it just feels like eating asandwich with nothing between the bread. There was a whole lot of angst, and an appropriate feeling of beingstalked, isolated and helpless. The atmosphere and cinematics weregreat. The biggest problem is that these books translate very poorly to movie. The books just can't stand the scrutiny of the level of reality moderncinema can deliver. The battles come off as more ridiculous than theA-team shows of the 20 years ago. The deatheaters always let theirprisoners hang round just long enough to escape in some silly way.The books and the movies are also far far to in love with their owncharacters, with one or two meeting their demise each movie, in a showof sentimentality that usually comes off as false. With the exception of a few of the main characters, the others come offas incredibly one dimensional.
