Disney's 50th Animated feature is entertaining and plays well even on a standard dep TV. Tangled is the 50th full-length animated FEATURE film from Disney and they are using that number to promote the film and its new DVD release. It's "interesting" that the DELUXE FOUR-DVD set (DVD+ Digital+Blu-ray+ Blu-ray 3D) is priced at $49.99 and not an even $50. Anyway, there are MANY reviews already posted based on the theatrical version of the film so I won't re-hash the plot here. You probably will be more interested in the home version of the film. As noted above, there is the 4-disc Deluxe version, but Disney has also released a 2-discv version without the 3-D disc, and a single-disc DVD version. Unless you are one of the few with a 3D TV the Deluxe version probably won't be of much use.To date I still haven't gone Blu-ray so I was unable to watch the bonus features exclusive to BR, which include A "Making of", Deleted scenes and two extended songs. The other two minor bonuses are on the standard DVD version. These are two interesting "original storybook openings" - running just over 3 minutes each - and a two-minute "countdown" compilation of the 50 animated features - to a soundtrack of Stevie Nicks' "Dreams" - with no identification of each film. I've watched the film on my standard large screen TV and its really sharp. The computer animation gets better and better. And the sound on the standard DVD was perfect too!As for the film itself, I liked it though I don't think its Disney's best. The songs by Alan Menken sound more like they were written for a Broadway show then for the films he previously composed for.So, yes I enjoyed it. And would recommend. I just wish that Disney would provide those people with standard DVD players some of the bounues that is only on the BR disc. After all, many of these do not use the BD component.Steve Ramm"Anything Phonographic"

[A] deeply affecting journey that is both unusual in its nature and grounded in the authority of folklore, one that slowly matures to a poignance that snuck up on me...

Honestly, when is the last time you saw a decent Disney Animatedfeature? No no, PIXAR does not count. I'm talking about just a regularol' straight laced Disney flick. If your like me, I'm sure your answerfalls somewhere in the mid 90's. But isn't that a shame? What happenedto the totally awesome Disney movies? If your excuse is because oftechnology, i assure you that your wrong. You can make a great animatedmovie without resorting to actual hand drawn art. But where is that oldfeeling we all use to share? Well i can tell you this much....i alreadyknew that Disney had something special here, mainly because the VP ofPIXAR jumped ship and decided to fund this project. The first timeanyone from PIXAR has ever done so, let alone the freakin VP. Soneedless to say, Disney finally had enough, and pulled out all thestops for this one.I kid you not when i say this...."Tangled" is easily the best DisneyAnimated feature i have seen since "Aladdin".....yes, it is that good. They finally let go of trying to find something new and different andsettled with what was working for them almost 20 years ago. It's aprincess tale that easily falls into the same category with theclassics. So wait, does that mean i'm comparing it to the likes of"Snow White" "Cinderella" and "Sleeping Beauty"? You damn right i am!Sure the storyline is cliché' and relative to other Disney classics, but it felt so good to see and feel something that helped recall yourchildhood. But other than those minor speed bumps, the movie is spoton. The animation is spectacular, and you would be a fool not to see itin 3D. The musical sequences didn't seem forced and were never boring. And i can almost guarantee you that it will snag the best song award atthe Oscars. I'm just glad that they didn't work the story around themusic, which is what a lot of animated features tend to slip up on. Butthis one did an amazing job of hybriding them together.Bottom Line, ladies and gentleman, this is the Disney picture you havebeen waiting for. It will definitely win your heart and pleaseaudiences both young and old.

What I love about this movie is actually the villain. While manyvillains are pretty cut and dry evil, I don't believe this applies toMother Gothel. Yes, she is selfish and kidnapping the Princessautomatically sends her into the bad person category, yet it isn't allbad. She raises Rapunzel in a nice and cheery looking home, she buysher things she enjoys (paints, books, pottery clay, etc.), and showsher some affection (she says she loves her, hugs her). Even her reasonsfor keeping Rapunzel in the tower are not a complete lie for therewould be people that would be after Rapunzel for her gift. Now, I'm notdefending Mother Gothel by any means, I just find her interesting.Plus, let's face it, there are worse real mothers in the world! There are other things that make this movie the best that Disney hascome out with in ages. The sidekick characters are hilarious and mydaughter always laughs at Max's antics. I love the music as well. Ieven added "Mother Knows Best" as one of my ring tones. Overall, thisis a fantastic movie that will find itself on the list of Disneyclassics along with "Beauty and the Beast", "Little Mermaid","Cinderella", and "Sleeping Beauty".

Tangled is the latest Disney animation that flawlessly captures thewhole "Disney Princess" genre from its traditional cell animation infull computer graphics (also shown in stereoscopic 3-D format). In thisretelling of the Rapunzel story, Princess Rapunzel (Mandy Moore) iskidnapped from the palace as a baby by Mother Gothel (Donna Murphy) andraised as her own due to Rapunzel's magical hair. Rapunzel has sincebeen imprisoned in a tower until her 18th birthday, when she strikes adeal with a bandit named Flynn Ryder (Zachary Levi) to escape and seeup close the strange floating lights that she sees every year on herbirthday from her tower. Meanwhile, Gothel, a group of bandits, and theKing's guards are in hot pursuit. Finally Disney nearly gets everything right. Almost. Visually, thisfilm is right up there with Pixar's work actually, it even manages tosurpass in that arena. This is saying A LOT. Still, the real strengthof Pixar's work is how each of their films all work as a whole package, hanging on the strength of its storytelling, characterization, and highconcept. It is in these last three points that Disney's Tangled comesvery close but not quite reach, yet, that's understandable given thatit's based on a well-known fairy tale, and let's face it, when it comesto Disney animation, it has certain rules--repetitive ones at that. There's the recurring cute non-speaking sidekick, the music numbers, the evil stepmother, and couple other rules which will become clearwhen you see it. Their concept and stories are quite similar to eachother, but Tangled does make some novel changes that work well quitedramatically and humorously. The characters have a modern edge to themthat makes them fun, yet not derivative. The visual jokes are quitesophisticated and the film never overdoes it.The characters all closely mimic the traditional 2-D Disney characterstyle. Rapunzel beautifully shines in this film. Her expressions, thefacial structure, the cute nose, the perfect skin tones, and the bigeyes look amazingly alive. The movements of her and all the charactershere are spot on. They move just like 2-D animation, yet realistically. The action scenes are breath-taking. I could just watch Rapunzel movearound and simply be amazed at the artistry. Likewise, Flynn Ryder andMother Gothel are well-crafted, humorously and carefully animated. However, if there was one character that steals the show every momentthat he appears on screen, that would have to be a certain horse namedMaximus. Truly, if there's an Oscar for a CG character, he'd win handsdown. If I ever meet the guy who animated this character, I'd love toshake his hand.Mandy Moore is flawless as the voice of Rapunzel. I really can't addanything else to say without being redundant. Zachary Levi brings muchpersonality and fun as Flynn Ryder with his expressive voice andperfect timing, which sound strangely like Steve Carell. Yeah, trylistening to him with your eyes closed and tell me if you disagree. Now, the film is not without some flaws. The music numbers can be a taddistractingÂadmittedly, they weren't particularly memorable. The filmwould have been just fine without them, but they're not bad. Second, there's a rather predicable nature in the way this film follows acommon, worn Disney formulaÂit's hard to elaborate without spoilers. There's also an underlying meanness in this film that Pixar films tendnot to have (yet Pixar films manage to be more mature andthought-provoking than many live-action films). This film is here toentertain and in that way, it succeeds. Disney films are meant to makeyou want to believe in love and magic, not heady subjects like familyrelations (Finding Nemo, Incredibles, Up), loyalty (Ratatouille),community (Bug's Life), mortality (Toy Story series), and problems ofpride (Cars).Whatever flaws one may look for, they are actually quite trivialcompared to the rest of this film. There's no doubt that this film is agreat technical leap forward in almost every way, successfullyduplicating the beauty, creativity, and imagination of its traditional, animated roots. Disney has done it quite marvelously here. Bravo! For more of my reviews, you can also follow me onhttp://twitter.com/d_art

Disney's long tradition of musical animation never dies. Once again the company's latest work "Tangled" proves that. This is a family picture everyone can enjoy, telling a good story about characters you relate to, with a healthy dose of action and comedy. But what is most impressive is the film's breathtakingly beautiful colors that saturate the animation's fairy tale world.Based on a tale collected by the Brothers Grimm, "Tangled" revolves around a 18-year-old girl Rapunzel living in a high tower among the woods. In fact, she was kidnapped as a baby from the king and the queen by Gothel, an elderly woman who knows the special power Princess Rapunzel possesses. Not knowing the world outside (and her true identity), Rapunzel dreams of traveling to see thousands of lights that float in the sky once a year. "Tangled" mixes the orthodox "boy-meets-girl" theme with fairy tale elements (though any sexual allusions of the original tale are carefully removed). The film keeps a steady pace with musical sequences, action scenes and nice comic turns from fearsome-looking (but actually likable) thugs drinking at a tavern, plus one non-speaking animal, Pascal the chameleon. Also, Maximus, a white horse of the royal guard, is a real scene stealer, who deserves his own movie. But what makes "Tangled" really special is its rich colors and lush textures. The amazing sky lantern scene is one of the many highlights of the film. This alone would be enough to give the film four stars or even more.

This review is from: Tangled (Amazon Instant Video) Awesome movie. It had an amazing story line. I did not expect the movie to end the way it did. Total must-see for anybody wanting to get in an effervescent mood. Thumbs up for everyone who produced it. XD

Tangled braids strands of traditional storytelling and a contemporary sensibility with stylish if predictable results.

I was really skeptical when I sat down to watch 'Tangled' with my 6 year old daughter, as I feel the quality of Disney movies has really, really gone down since The Lion King came out in 1994. There were the rare exceptions like Mulan in 1998 and the incredible Lilo & Stitch in 2002, but overall the glory days of Disney were in the past. I heard that 'Tangled' had gotten great reviews, and man were those reviews right!!!This isn't just a good movie, but a GREAT one that excels in all areas which are important with 1 small exception:- animation is some of the greatest I have ever seen, it's absolutely gorgeous- story is fresh and new, a great new spin on an old story- score is spot on throughout- voice acting is exceptionalThe only caveat I have is that the songs were very good, just not on the level with the Lion King, but this isn't a fair critique.I have no qualms with recommending this movie to EVERYONE. A rare CGI movie that has a feel that isn't CGI and another gem that is on the same level as Pixar. With great movies like this and Dreamworks 'How to Train Your Dragon', Pixar finally has some really competition, something that only is a win win win for the consumer!!***** HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

I went to the midnight showing of "Tangled" with my mom, my dad, and my brother and I thought that this film was excellent. I was blown away watching this film. Also, they made Rapunzel look so beautiful in the movie, she's animated and I'm saying she looks beautiful. This is a film for the whole family to enjoy. Everyone such as kids, teenagers, adults, and elders will adore this film very much. I give "Tangled" an A+ and 4 out of 4 stars. It was so hilarious... I was cracking up watching this film. The characters that really stole the show in this film was Maximus the horse and the chameleon. I definately recommend this film. I promise all of you that you won't be disappointed in this film. It was hilarious, it was cute, and it was magical. Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi did an outstanding job voicing in this AMAZING family comedy musical film.

Disney's latest addition to the world of animated full-length features is a joy through and through. I have to admit that I had heard so many positive things about Tangled before I saw it that I started to doubt whether it could be all that good. As a result, I found my expectations lowering, and I went into the show with a critical eye. What I found surprised me. It was THAT good! The villian in this show is worthy of being grouped with Disney's best. She is conniving, despicable, manipulating, and, well, evil...all to meet her own personal needs. The stroryline, characters, and their interactions were top-notch through and through. I have to admit that one of my favorite character-character interactions was between Flynn Rider and the horse Maximus...you'll see.It was soon obvious that Tangled works at multiple levels: small children, tweenagers, teens, and adults. I happened to see the film in a theater that was completely packed (and in 3D). When the movie ended there was actually applause. The crowd liked it that well.I noted that John Lasseter (of Pixar) was the executive producer, but Disney pulled this off on their own...it wasn't a Pixar flick, though it's as good as Pixar releases.I look forward to the DVD release of this film, since it will certainly be joining my video library.5 stars

I took my 3 daughters (all Disney Princess fans) to Opening Day ofTangled and all I've heard since is.... let's go again! While we lovePrincess movies in general in our household, a Princess alone isn't asurefire win (Disney's "Princess" made-for-TV was a flop, Barbie is hitand miss, and the Disney Princess Collections are mostly 3/10 stars)...We went with friends (this included three little boys) and all of thechildren left smiling, laughing, and wanting to see it again. The story is captivating and full of adventure. It was exciting to seea prince with some depth. Many trademark scenes (rowboats and a worksong) were included (and as Disney Princess fans, we're glad) - butstill Tangled made its own mark.Rapunzel is a princess with integrity, loyalty, and compassion - alongwith strength, adventure, and charisma. The sparkling personality wasoutstanding.Well done!

This review is from: Tangled (Four-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) I have 5 wonderful children. We are Disney Vacation Club members and my wife and I both grew up in Florida and are lifetime fans of all things Disney. We have had the joy of sharing the fun and excitement of annual Disney vacations, the daily fun of the Disney channel, but most of all the magic that is Disney animation. Pixar has had all the animation thunder and been carrying this torch for quite some time. However, that is no longer true. At a recent screening in our local multiplex, me and the kids sat down for an afternoon showing of Tangled. From the preview, we saw it as a movie we would see. We were all blown away. We had so much fun watching this movie, not just because it was a beautiful exquisitely timed and told story, but it was just flat out fun with no drag and a significant break from the "formula" of Disney animation. Not that the formula was bad, but this is something new that feels both fresh and current with the extra special "Magic" that only Disney can do. When I talked to the kids after watching this we all agreed, that for us this film was better than Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Snow White, Alice in Wonderland, The Princess and the Frog, Alladin and even better than the pixar films (just a small amount though). Disney blew this one completely out of the park!! I ordered the 3D blu ray right away and we cant wait to get it!!!

With princesses and romance for the girls, sword-fighting and derring-do for the lads, Tangled ticks boxes for both genders.
05 May 2012
Despite the wonderful animation and art direction, this is yet another of Disney's failed attempts to capture the magic of their "golden age" of the 1990s. The Lost Princess/Rapunzel is just another "misunderstood" girl who's coming of age means rebellion against her parent. This is practically a theme for Disney films of late, perhaps done so they'll be marketable to the so-called spoiled "tween" girls who think the the world revolves around them. In any event, this film has the obligatory (and forgetable) musical numbers that fall flat and don't advance the story, but rather are just an interruption of it.Save your money, unless you want to entertain young children with the bright colors and fast-moving action. The story isn't worth the journey through "Tangled."

After a decade of disappointing Disney films (NOT talking with Pixar) with only "Lilo and Stitch" as the only hit Disney decided to go back to tried & true. And, did they.It is a good film. There is humor. Supporting characters that we more exciting than the main characters. That would be Maximus & Pascal. Stole one name from "Gladiator"? We got back into regular Disney music for a film. That is a plus, BUT which is major. None of the songs are memorable. I can NOT remember any of them after the film.Is colorful. When I wrote above about tried & true. I mean it. You see several scenes here that were taken from both "Beauty and the Beast" & "Snow White. When the film started I thought I was watching "Beauty and the Beast". The superior film of course, "Snow White" again superior and the one that started the full length animated films. The good guy is first a heal, hey Disney how about I saw that in "The Princess and the Frog"?So, it was a good try & a good film Disney. Just NOT a bulls eye.NOW, THE COMPLAINT I HAVE WITH DISNEY NOW. They think EVERYONE has a blu/ray player. I do NOT. Can NOT afford one or the discs. So, Disney does NOT care about regular DVD's anymore. There is only one extra on this and it is for kids. And, for a colorful film why a plain Jane silver disc Disney? Cheap. For a colorful film, beautiful animation a plain silver disc.Cutting corners does NOT make people customers happy Disney. Disney has gone cheap, NOT the way to make money Disney. I hope your company AGAIN uses sales because of these cheap tricks. Disney, you want to make money. KEEP YOUR CUSTOMERS HAPPY.
Glenn Kenny 04 May 2012
It eventually establishes itself as not just a fleet and engaging cartoon entertainment, but something of a latter-day classic... worthy of consideration alongside... Beauty and the Beast.

There's a kind of tenderness to behind Tangled that almost works onit's own with out the need for the so called 'post-modern' approach tofairy tales which brings out the cunning above the sentimentality.Tangled works either way. The film trusts it's material an its audienceenough to embrace sentimentality, yet there is also a sense ofmodernity to the film which gives it that much of an edge. This is oneof those a movie where the damsel in distress saves the dashing hero. It's cute as a romance, It's effective as part comedy, it feels organicas a musical (capturing Disney's better days). The ending feels alittle cheap, but that's typical of fantasies, and I suppose there isno need to get picky. Tangled works, quite well.

May not break any new ground, but for better and worse, it's the most inoffensive Princess affair to date.
