Very solid revenge flick

Normally when it comes to movies the Rock is in, I'm not expectingOscar-worthy material. The revenge flick doesn't fall into this category either, unless youcount The Rules of the Game or something on that level. This, however, is a damn fine example of the genre and one of the bestI've ever seen. The look and feel of the movie is beautiful. Thedialog, what little there is, has one or two misses, but the tension issolid throughout. If you've seen the trailer, you'll know if you like this sort of film.If you do, go watch it! If you don't... Well, why are you reading this?Billy Bob Thornton has 'skeezy' down to a T. And the Rock plays the'man on a mission' with deft skill. The Killer, Oliver Jackson-Cohenoccasionally has interesting moments, but is sadly a very wimpy exampleof the breed. Then again, compared to the character of the Driver, eventhe most stone-cold killer would find it a tough contest at best. For those that say the Driver's revenge list is as easy as a grocerylist, I'll have to admit it's more realistic for it. A man that drivenand determined against a group of criminals that weren't at the top oftheir class to begin with - well, I know where I'd put my money.

The Rock is my

This review is from: Faster (DVD) dream man so I had to buy this just to look at him over, over and over again (smile)-- I'd agree with the other reviewers that he doesn't say much throughout the movie but he's the ROCK he doesn't have to! But I really enjoyed the action and a pretty decent plot as well--I really enjoyed it!

The car is perfectly cast, Johnson shines out

Dwayne Johnson really shines here, he has matured and is becoming abetter and better actor. I think he is great as "the demon" whorelentlessly stalks the killers of his brother. Billy Bob Thorton is asmoldering surprise here, the cast in sterling really. While it is akind of action driven story, there is an underlying "noire", a shadowof the kinds of characters that make for intriguing stories and film. The story is tight, well-conceived and executed intelligently. Really, the film was surprising good, fascinating in its minimalism, andsterling in developing the back story of the characters. A notch abovemost films of this type. The car Dwayne Johnson drives is really acharacter in itself, great car, perfectly cast.

Faster is not an apt title...but who cares!!?...Welcome back, Mr.Johnson!

This movie brings The Rock's career back on track. Even in his Disneymovies, he has proved that he has a natural charm about him, and ascreen presence that very few others have. All this while, watching hiskiddie movies (only if i chanced upon them), i was waiting when hewould decide to bring that charm and charisma to Action movies. Seeingthis guy act, one knows for sure that action movies are his truecalling. Well, all i can say is that my patience has been rewarded.Welcome back, Rock!As for the movie itself, there is very little that can be faulted here.Of course, some snob critic looking for a Dark Knight in everythingwill surely find many faults, but from an entertainment perspective, there is very little that can be faulted. The only problem i had wasthe title of the movie. I don't know how they got to 'Faster', butseeing the movie's ending, the first thing that came to mind was'Closure' because that is what all the key characters are looking for.**SPOILERS START HERE** Driver's (Johnson) closure comes when heavenges his brother's killers. Cop's (Thornton) closure comes when he(thinks he has) killed Driver and ensured that there were no demons inthe closet to hinder a retirement with full-benefits for him and hisfamily. Killer's closure comes by knowing that Driver is not as smartas he is and that he has not got the whole plan figured, unlikehimself; this provides him satisfaction that he is better than Driver.**SPOILERS END HERE**All three key characters are just looking to move on and are ready todo anything necessary for getting that one last thing that needs to bedone out of the way. The premise is well-acted, well-shot andwell-executed. I, for one, can't wait for The Rock's next movie!

Revenge at Your Service.

Basically a combination of "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" and "DeathWish" as ex-convict Dwayne Johnson looks for all the culprits whokilled his brother and allowed him to be caught and imprisoned after abotched bank robbery. Hot on his trail are detectives Billy BobThornton and Carla Gugino and mysterious hired assassin OliverJackson-Cohen. As this trio tries to catch up with Johnson, he goes ona rampage throughout the Southwest looking for each member of the crewwho murdered his brother years earlier. Director George Tillman, Jr.does a complete 180 from "Soul Food" and "Men of Honor" with "Faster"as he leaves most of his sentimentality at the door and replaces itwith a red-hot adrenaline rush of a film which stays watchable thanksto its cast (namely Johnson and Thornton), but still fails to reallymake an imprint cinematically and ultimately it does nothing to standout from dozens of others of the type. Tillman's work feels more like amodern-day Western than anything else, but the substance andgroundbreaking elements which could have potentially been present justnever do materialize over the unforgiving desert of the film'sgeographical and mental landscape. 2.5 out of 5 stars.

The Driver, the Cop, and the Killer

Instead of the Good, the Bad and the Ugly what we have here is thedriver, the cop and the killer. Dwayne Johnson's the driver, an ex-confresh out of prison who's so keen to start doling out revenge on thosewho killed his brother that he runs all the way from the prison to ascrap yard where a pristine souped-up motor awaits his arrival. There'ssomething vaguely supernatural about Johnson's character; pronounceddead in hospital, he suddenly returns to life despite being shot in thehead at point blank range; then he survives a second point blank bulletto the noggin (courtesy of the steel plate inserted after his firstbrush with death). The cop is Billy Bob Thornton, a near-dissolutejunkie trying to win back his wife and re-establish a connection withhis young son, who, together with an untrusting female colleague, isgiven the job of hunting down the driver. The Killer is asuper-efficient English hit man who kills more for spiritual fulfilmentthan material gain. His superhuman drive for excellence in all thingsis the result of childhood paraplegia apparently. You can probably work out from the description above that Faster isn'ta film that cares too much about rooting its characters in the realworld, There's a decent idea at the core of the film, but the writerisn't up to developing that idea into anything meaningful. Thornton'scharacter is probably the most clearly defined (until a jaw-droppingtwist at the end), but you get the impression that the domesticsituations the enervated cop encounters are designed merely towrong-foot the viewer rather than provide any insight into hischaracter. Fair enough, this is an action movie so any attempt atadding some kind of depth to a character is to be applauded, but by theend of the movie Thornton's character simply comes across as a mass ofunresolved contradictions. Johnson's character has no kind of depth;driven only by a single-minded desire for revenge, you can imagine himfinding a dark room where he can go into standby mode once his missionis complete. As for the Brit killer, it's difficult to understand whyhe's there at all. You could quite easily write him and his James Bondworld of sleek cars and sleeker women out of the film entirely withoutdamaging the main story.Despite these faults – and the countless plot holes - the film isfast-moving enough for its entertainment quotient to at leasttemporarily quell most niggles until after the credits have rolled. There are also a couple of neat touches, not least of which is the ideaof having one of the former killers become a telesales rep…

An exiting film that will keep you spell bound wondering what will happen next and why

This is a revenge thriller that reveals what it is all about little by little. In fact, Rock, who is seeking revenge, doesn't work it all out until the end. Rock, who is black, was a driver during a bank robbery. One of the gang is his brother, a white man. The gang gets away, but a group comes to their hideaway and kills all of them and takes the money they stole. They think that Rock is dead but he isn't. He serves ten years in jail for the robbery. When he is released, he goes after the men who killed his brother. He begins killing them. A cop who is addicted to dope joins a female cop to go after him for the murders. Also, someone hires a professional killer to go after and kill Rock. Both Rock and the professional killer are passionate about killing. How could Rock who is black be the brother of a white man? Is Rock going after the real killers? Who informed the killers where Rock and the gang were hiding? Why were they set up? Who hired the professional killer and why?

Arnie and Sly's replacement

Films like Faster have been lacking for mainstream cinema for almost a decade now. Now that Arnie and Sly have retired a new hero was needed. Arise The Rock. It took him time to get here after making films for kids I feel this type of roles best suit him. He did display something similar in the first 10 minutes of welcome to the Jungle. More of the same please! This is a film for all the men out there who like action films that kick ass.

Matt_Layden 28 April 2012

A predictable, yet still fun action film.

Faster is The Rock back in the genre he belongs. After failed andfailed and failed attempts at Disney kids films, need I remind anyoneof The Tooth Fairy, it seems The Rock aka Dwayne Johnson, is back doingwhat he does best. Faster is a revenge tale. Straight out of prison, aman known only as Driver, goes on a killing spree. His targets? A gangof thugs that killed his brother and shot him in the head, leaving himfor dead. Somehow he lived and how he's dishing out his own personalvengeance.Yeah, so we've seen this type of film before. It also stars Billy bobThorton in a role that seems as if he were simply chasing a paycheckand Carla Gugino, a detective on the case. Cugino gets very little todo here other than speak her lines at crime scenes and belittle Thortonevery chance she gets. Thorton on the other hand has a bit more depthto his character, but it doesn't seem like he cares to explore it. Oliver Jackson-Cohen plays an assassin, a hired contract killer sent totake out Driver. Who don't know who is employer is, but we can figureit out before their big reveal. He gets engaged to Shannon from Lostand is willing to leave the profession behind...after this one lastjob. Hmm, another plot device that we have seen before. BasicallyFaster tries nothing new, nothing at all, and it's perfectly fine withjust that. It's more concerned with showing the Rock as a badass. Well,I'm here to say mission accomplished. How many films can you say you'veseen where a guy walks into a hospital with a revolver and shoots a manlying on an operating table. This is of course after a knife fight withsaid man a few scenes prior. I really like Dwayne Johnson. The man has charisma, he was always oneof the more entertaining people in the ring and I'm glad to see himbranch out to new endeavors. The man does action and comedy well, heshould stick to what he knows best and try to avoid those odd roles, like in Southland Tales. Faster, although clichéd, does the job.

25 April 2012

An entertaining, interesting revenge flick.

He's known as "Driver." He's just out of prison, and he's seeking vengeance for the death of his brother. He won't stop until he has his revenge. And it will be a dish served warm--warm as blood. That's the basic plot of FASTER. We're not talking rocket science here. George Tillman, Jr., has crafted a decent homage to the action/revenge flicks of yore, without adding (or, in his defense, trying to add) anything knew to the genre. In the titular role, Dwayne Johnson is perfectly adequate: he's perhaps a bit too kid-friendly these days, but he's big and tough and bada**. As the Cop who's chasing him, Billy Bob Thornton gives another solid "man conflicted" portrayal (few do it better than him). As the Killer assigned to kill Driver, Oliver Jackson-Cohen is smooth, sleak, and intelligent. Carla Gugino is reliably solid as Cop's reluctant partner; and Tom Berenger turns in a neat cameo (no spoilers, it's early enough) as the Warden. You'll notice a lot of archetypal names; that's because there's nothing personal about FASTER, which is both a blessing and a curse. It's interesting to see an antihero who is neither sympathetic nor repulsive; as the Killer describes him, he's just "completely artless...there's no sophistication to him whatsoever, but he's pure." And yet, you can count on both hands the lines of dialogue Johnson has in this film; a little of his trademark wit would've helped the archetypes go down smoother. Plus, we're supposed to care about the Cop's family troubles, but we don't, because we are far more interested in his heroin addiction. The Killer's personal life is interesting but pointless; again, we're more interested in his desire to become better (he's sees Driver as a challenge to be surpassed, telling his girlfriend that he has already "beat" yoga). You'll have to take FASTER on your own terms. It's violent and (pun ahead) fast, and not for the faint of heart; you have to like revenge thrillers to enjoy this one, or at least be mildly entertained by them. Kudos go to Thornton and Jackson-Cohen, who give performances above and beyond the scripted material. Johnson still has great screen presence, but this isn't the film to showcase his talents. Really, it's about the action and the bullet count, both of which are amply represented here.

warning: awful movie ahead

my GOd this is the worst movie in a long time! don't even get close tothis nightmare.... I mean Billy Bob is useless and dumb, the Rockdisappear during the movie, a useless female cop with a gruff voice andthe best : a contract killer who used to work as a successful ITbusinessman ,come on man, you really need to have that much resume tokill idiots....no, people beware of this stinker, a real danger foryour left side of the brain...they want me to write at least 10 linesfor the review but Im worried I may cause the writers and producers toconsider suicide, seriously, their careers are in serious jeopardy andI will suggest them to consider the IT business instead

Faster Redeems a Misguided Career

While I always thought Dwayne Johnson (The Rock!) had potential as anactor, I thought his career choices have been pretty dismal since heleft the world of wrestling. Whether throwaway crap like "The ScorpionKing" or just plain embarrassing stuff like "The Tooth Fairy" (we getit Dwayne, you can laugh at yourself - how about getting down tobusiness!), I just never felt compelled to see one of his movies. Untilnow.I could tell from the trailer this one was going to be different.Faster is a throwback to the merciless action flicks of the 1970s.Existential in tone. Ruthless in execution. It's kind of a crossbetween Death Wish and Vanishing Point. A pure, undiluted revenge dramathat shows Dwayne Johnson really can walk the walk when he wants to.This isn't G-rated pabulum for the whole family. This is a leatherglove across the chops, R-rated blast from the muzzle of a sawed-offshotgun. The plot isn't very complex, but the pacing is beautiful, asis the purity of this amazing movie.Billy Bob Thornton does a great job too as The Cop, a lowlife drugaddicted, slimy little lawman with 9 days to go before retirement andone last case to solve. And Oliver Jackson-Cohen is terrific as ayuppie hit-man with a personal score to settle. If you like movies that are intent simply in kicking your ass for 90minutes, you could do a lot worse than Faster. After all these years,I'm finally a Dwayne Johnson fan.

The Rock is cooking with gas in this one!

This review is from: Faster (DVD) Imagine being completely devastated (mind, body, and soul) and then having the ultimate opportunity to step up to the plate and start avenging. Well, this movie takes that step and does so while still expanding on the story and creating a few additional interesting characters to keep the film very interesting. I do not want to spoil any of it, except to say that once the main character is let loose and decides on a direction, he literally starts running and that's what I like to see happen - someone who takes charge of the situation and obliterates his enemies. That makes for some great movie time.

KILLING TELEMARKETERS IS ILLEGAL

Dwayne Johnson has spent 10 years in prison for being the driver in a bank robbery. After the robbery, another gang goes to their "secret" hideout, kills Johnson's brother, takes the money and leaves Johnson for dead. Now he is out of prison and wants revenge. A man named "R.G." sets him up with what he needs. And before the credits are done rolling, Rock kills a telemarketer which we come to find out has been outlawed in California. (I would be willing to give up medical marijuana, if we could shoot telemarketers.) Billy Bob Thornton plays a burned out cop, who is addicted to heroin, caffeine, and cigarettes. His wife, who is an ex-addict has kicked him out of the house. Meanwhile, there is an assassin, with a British accent, who is not named Nigel, trying to kill Johnson. He has issues he tries to work out by talking to his therapist via Bluetooth just before he goes in for the kill. This is something that if done right could have added a humor aspect to the story, as it was it was just a distraction. The movie starts out as 5 stars. Good action and killing. Billy Bob Thornton enters the crime scene with Kenny Rogers' "Condition.." music as his swagger music. For those old enough to remember there was a time (lasted 1,397.3 days) when having Kenny Rogers in your collection was cool. All was well with the movie. however after 3 killings the movie goes south as they attempt to turn it into some kind of drama by tying together plot points and abandoning rock and roll. No sex or nudity.

Revenge Flick with Character

This turned out to be a little surprising. The first 5 or 10 minutes kind of confirm that this is going to be an exploitation movie, a straight revenge movie that could have been from the 80's, or something from Tarantino's list of obscure movies to watch. However it turns out to be something not quite as straightforward, in no small part due to some terrific turns from the two main leads. Dwayne Johnson plays his best role in years here, as the guy just released from prison, who sets out at a brisk no-nonsense pace, to settle some scores. The why he was in, the who he is after part gradually come together during the course of the movie, with a few flashbacks, along with some surprisingly well played backstories to the other characters in the movie. While "The Rock" is playing his best - and perhaps not coincidentally his least verbose - role in years, Billy Bob Thornton also puts in a reliable turn as the cop on his case, who also has his own tortured background. If there's a misfire, it's the plot strand of the hitman hired to kill Johnson. It's just not too essential to the story, although it does lead to the only brief car chase in the movie. I should point out this is no "Fast 5" clone of babes and car chases - neither are in particular abundance here... the only thing it has in common is that the camera lavishes some enviable screen time on the muscle cars, and the rumble of Johnson's Chevelle SS acts as more of a voice for The Rock's character than he does.Clint Mansell's score of tinkling piano's mixed with some pounding synths as the behemoth Johnson ploughs towards his mark, is effectively backed up with some surprising song additions on the soundtrack.. from Iggy Pop to Kenny Rogers. All in all, it's a surprisingly stylishly put together flick - which while not the most surprising in the world, certainly is lifted by style and performances to the front of the pack of this ilk currently doing the rounds. With the characters named by what they do or what they are ("Driver", "Cop", "Killer"), the emphasis on style and the music, the imperfect characters, one is almost tempted to see some homage to A Leone Western here - but in a good way.You may see the end coming, it might trod a well worn path, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and think it's better than its current competitors. Thumbs up.

20 April 2012

2 1/2 stars for a "Rock" thriller

For a genre movie, it could have been worse. Dwayne Johnson, formerly known as "The Rock", may have found his niche as a hard-nosed x-con out to revenge the brutal death of his brother in the aftermath of a bank robbery. Unfortunately the film pirouettes off in different directions. We have an ultra rich, ADD afflicted hired killer (Oliver Jackson-Cohen). He's bored so only charges a dollar because he just does it for the thrill! We have the drug addicted cop (Billy Bob Thornton) on his last 10 days on the job who somehow gets assigned to a new partner (Carla Gugino), who's looking into a set of murders. The lynchpin of the original murder of the brother is telegraphed pretty early on, but may come as a surprise to some. There are some good car stunts but for the most part they are just there for the target audience. The movie had potential. "The Rock" seems comfortable in this type role and in the hands of Tarantino or Rodriquez the film would have been a lot more fun.

No menu or language list

I rented it from Redbox and Family Video a couple of times and received both same results. No menu. No language menu I can access to for captioning or subtitle. And pix was freezing at times. Makes me wonder if the company made bad job on dubbing DVDs for this movie. I can wait till the cable will giving a showing. I can't rate the movie itself. But I give the DVD makings a zero!
