He's a horse, he likes apples

This review is from: True Grit (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) I have seen the movie several times and like with all good experiences, more is revealed each time. Everything about this movie is awesome. The music in the many different ways it was played, All the name actors really got it right. Maddie/Hallie was the suprise. This is a movie that will stay with you after many viewings. You will be able to relate some part of yourself to each of the actors. I loved the movie and give it a solid 5 stars.

Very good, but the John Wayne film was better

Viewers watching two film versions of one story with virtually the same actions will differ in deciding which one they like best. It seems to me that the John Wayne version is better than the new one staring Jeff Bridges. I felt that both Bridges and Hailee Steinfeld, who played Rooster Cogburn and Mattie Ross, were too heavy handed in the way they played their rolls. Both worked to show dramatic effect without the humor that is present in the first film. For example, the fun was absent when Mattie bargained for the prices she wanted for her father's horses and when she haggled for other items. The first film spent more time on these events. As a result, we did not come to like Rooster and Mattie as we did in the John Wayne version. The ending of the first film was much more emotional. This new film added nothing to the drama by showing Mattie as a one-armed adult meeting famous western outlaws. The beginning of the Wayne movie was also better. It showed Mattie's father being killed and her and her mother's reactions. This was more effective than the narrator telling the viewers what happened in a brief account.

Should have never been remade

I have just about lost all respect for the Coen Brothers. Not only didthey remake a John Wayne classic that he won an Oscar for, they did areal poor job with it. This goes down as one of the many terribleremakes that have come out in the past few years such as Planet of theApes and Nightmare on Elm Street. While Jeff Bridges is a good actorand I like watching him, I am sorry to say he is no John Wayne. Hisperformance in this movie just does not come close to the Duke'sOscar-winning performance. Josh Brolin should have done a Jonah Hexsequel, it would be better than this mess. Simply put, the movie wasperfect the first time. It should have never been remade.

Wonder why

I wonder why everyone so loves this movie. I found it to be rather dulland boring. The characters seemed somewhat true as the film claims tobe made on true story. Yet the presence of the girl is quite annoying. She is so annoying that (this might be a slight spoiler)when she getsspanked I thought she fully deserved it . She is so annoying yetsomehow the center of the whole flick. It seems to me that the scenewhere she displays here ability to bargain with an old man and aprofessional trader, and succeeds in getting the deal her way, the filmhad its climax. Quite outlandish. Everything was downhill afterward(and it was not supposed to). You just watch and wonder why are theydoing what they're doing? Matt Damon as a Texas Ranger was not the best choice. I just didn'tbelieve him the whole time. I kept on remembering some of his stupidpolitical remarks on the Internet and could not help but think: "Why isMatt Damon wearing these clothes and tries to act like a cowboy? He isa liberal Hollywood dude; he looks funny on a horse with a gun." Thetruth is I nearly fell asleep on this movie, that's how dull it was tome.

several horse-stabbing/shooting scenes caught me off guard

Take away those parts and you have a fine cinematic work here. I felt these parts were completely unnecessary, imo.

Coen's can do better... but Bridges has never been so good!

Ethan and Joel Coen are amongst the most talented, prolific & legendarystorytellers of Cinema History. 'Fargo' was an astonishing piece ofcinema that haunts me till today , while 'No Country Old Men' remainsto be amongst the best films of the now-gone decade. 'Burn AfterReading' gained a cult-following. 'True Grit' is surely a damn-goodfilm, with a sterling & silver-lining performance by Jeff Bridges, butCoen's can do much more.Based on Charles Portis' classic American novel of the same name, 'TrueGrit' is a vendetta fare. Hailee Steinfeld stars as Mattie Ross, a14-year-old girl, who inquires about hiring a Deputy U.S. MarshalRooster Cogburn, played by Jeff Bridges, to track down the man whokilled her father.'True Grit' begins with a bang, and the legendary bro's leave theirnow-very famous stamp. However, the slow-pacing begins to bore attimes. The first hour, though not "bad, gives you the impression thatthis isn't catching up as expected. The second hour is dramatic andgripping, but it's the climax that leaves the strongest impression. Theexecution of the finale is simply awe-inspiring.Coen's can do better, I mean it. Sure, 'True Grit' is amongst theirbetter films, and they direct each frame with absolute sincerity, butthe impact, as well as the writing are not up to the mark. RogerDeakins Cinematography is striking. Editing offers well.Performance-Wise: Jeff Bridges has never been so good, and my summaryhas already covered that fact. He is effortless and most effective asRooster Cogburn. His mesmerizing performances in 'The Last PictureShow, 'Starman', 'The Contender', 'Fearless' & 'Crazy Heart', sortapale in comparison near to his work in here. Bridges has gone down as aLegend in Hollywood, and according to me, it's an under-statement.Hailee Steinfeld is very sincere and most lovable. Matt Damon doesn'tget the desired scope, but does well nonetheless. Josh Brolin is superbin a brief role.On the whole, Coen's are more than this anyway good film. But yes, watching this film does rank as a must. Thumbs Up!

Very Good Movie, bordering on Great

I am not a professional reviewer so I admit to certain ignorance'sregarding the technical aspects of films and I lack the verbiage tofully explain myself. I can only report my feelings for the movie. I was extremely excited to hear that True Grit was being made by theCoen's with Jeff Bridges in the role of Rooster Cogburn. The additionof Josh Brolin and Matt Damon was icing on the cake. But let's face it,the girl almost stole the show. I say almost because she was almost asgood as Bridges. This is a good thing by the way, not a criticism. OK the good first. The writing and directing are always fantastic in Coen Brothers movie. The cinematography was spectacular and far out-did the original movie. The acting was excellent (possible Oscar nominations?) and I thinkBridges added a depth to the Cogburn character that John Wayne couldonly dream about. I say that as a John Wayne fan, but let's face it, hedidn't have a lot of range. The Cogburn Character was somewhatdifferent in as much as he talked and talked and talked. Most of it wasfunny though. Steinfeld was a surprise and I felt she also was a step up from the KimDarby version. Damon's version of Laboeuf, was way different than the Glen Cambellversion. There was more of a tenderfoot quality to the character, yethe was supposed to be a tough Texas Ranger. There was a lot more humor in this one than the original and theclassic Coen dialog was pleasing. The not so good.I think this movie suffers a little bit because it is a remake. Whileit wins almost all comparisons to the original, it is still compared tothe original. If this movie was alone in the world, it would have beenseen as groundbreaking. But it is not the ORIGINAL. To do a remake Ithink you need to distance it so far from the original that you almostcan't make the comparisons. This movie followed the ORIGINAL tooclosely. I kept hearing that this follows the book, not the original. Idin't read the book, but I saw the original and this didn't seem to bethat different. Yes the characters were deeper and darker, but stillnot that much different. While the dialog was a lot different, the plot and even the scenesseemed to be almost identical to the original. Too close perhaps. I wasjust expecting something way different and it wasn't that different.Probably it is that I was just expecting something else. The Brolin and Pepper (Barry Pepper, who played Ned Pepper) characterswere not in this movie for very long. The last part of the movie waslike it was on fast forward compared to the original. I would haveenjoyed seeing more of these characters, especially Ned Pepper whoseemed to be a truly despicable person. Loved the teeth...The movie seemed to stall at some points. I think the dialog wasintended to fill these up, but it seemed to me that the scenes wereslowed down specifically for the dialog.I know that much of my criticism for this movie is only because I wasexpecting something else and that is my fault, not the movie makersfault. But even with my criticism I give this movie 8 out of 10 becauseit is a very good movie. I just don't think I can say it is great. Ishould go down as one this years best movies though and I highlyrecommend it for anyone who likes a really well made western.

Bloody awful, and I am being kind.

The original True Grit summed up John Wayne's character. In thisupdate, Jeff Bridges is no John Wayne. Bridges waltzes through hispart.John Wayne gave Rooster Cogburn humour, and Kim Darby gave hercharacter stalwart opposition to Wayne's defiants. To take the original title means it is supposed to be an update on theoriginal. This film was garbage from start to finish. Flat and boring.I am amazed that Jeff Bridges took this role.In all the Westerns John Wayne made, he held the screen, Jeff Bridgesdoesn't do this. This remake was a waste of time, money, and space.Even taking this film on it's own merit, it was 100 per cent boring.Sorry to all concerned. You could not have paid me to watch this movie.

A Classic Western

If there's something to be said for classicism, it's certainly provedin Joel and Ethan Coen's 2010 Western drama True Grit. The adventurebegins in 19th century Arkansas, where 14 year old tough-as- nailscowgirl Maddie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld) sets out to avenge her father'smurder at the hands of outlaw Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin). With the mostrelentless local bounty hunter by her side in Reuben J. Cogburn (JeffBridges), she is determined to bring justice to her cause.Complications arise when the pair cross paths with the hotshot LaBoeuf(Matt Damon), a Texas Ranger who is confidently taking aim at the sameman. After a series of alliances and realignments Maddie finds herselfface-to-face with Chaney; her quivery hand clutching a silver pistoland her mind wrestling with the most important decision yet.True Grit is a more than worthy successor to it's 1969 predecessor, asthe Coen Brothers have followed more strictly the original 1968 novelby Charles Portis. The retention of the female narrator gives the plotan intimate personal aspect, encouraging the audience to root forMaddie throughout her adventure.Hailee Steinfeld is a surprisingly mature newcomer to the screen, holding her own next to the incomparable talents of Bridges and Damon. With cowboys, outlaws, gun fights and plenty of hard boiled dialogue,True Grit is a classically made conventional western, whose brilliantlyraw cinematography transports the audience to the dusty plains of theold west; a land of revenge, passion and grit.

Best eye-patch wearing hero since Snake Plissken

Well I reckon I'll tell ya'll about this a-here movie by them CoenBroth – dangit! I am NOT writing this review with Westernisms. The Coen brothers consistently produce some of the most entertainingand provocative films in Hollywood. With the exception of The HudsuckerProxy, which I just could not watch, I've enjoyed every one of theirfilms. The trailer probably was one of the most entertaining and well-cut I've seen in ages, but that means little. This, coupled with theTron: Legacy trailer made all the Jeff Bridges fans go Whoa Whoa! sometime around Christmas '10.In brief, the movie covers a young girl hiring a rogue gunslinger tohelp her gun down her father's killer. She's obstinate; so is he, andthey eventually have mutual respect for each other. Also some rangertries to horn in on the action and ends up being pretty useful. I can'treally tell you much more because that's just about it.So what did we get? Great, strong characters – CHECK! A modern western– CHECK. A strong plot – ehhh…. this is where the movie probably givessome viewers fits. Due to the strong performances all around, I sort ofgave this movie a free pass. Jeff Bridges showed his gruff, tough-guyrange with a truly… gritty character *puts on sunglasses*. HaileeSteinfeld was wonderful and I hope to see much more of her – shereminds me a lot of Jennifer Lawrence. Really beyond the characterdevelopment, there wasn't much in the story category. There isn't avery clear time or distance scale for the duration and you kind ofwonder where they're going for most of the film. What should have beenthe climax of the film was perplexing. I chalk that up to the Coensbeing a bit anti- climatic in a lot of their movies, but after all theviolence and… grit… the big moment we were waiting for didn't reallyplay out in any exciting way. Westerns are supposed to have the shootout and big finish, not a "huh…oh.. well… I... " sort of finish.True Grit may not have been a Fargo, but it really did entertain. Callme a hypocrite for calling out Horrible Bosses for lacking a plot, butat least this movie had some depth and probably more humor than thatso- called comedy. It may not be everybody's cup o' joe, but it's anice violent spectacle. Oh, and best eye-patch wearing hero since SnakePlissken.

Good film, but it will never be a classic like the original.

Like 3:10 TO YUMA, another recent western remake from a published source, both versions are great entertainment. Why make remakes? Because the original source is a great story, that's why classic adventures like Treasure Island, The Three Musketeers and Robin Hood get remade every few years. Just thinking about their titles is exciting. Also, technology in film making as well as film style changes. So here we have another version of TRUE GRIT or more appropriately TRUE GRIT 2010. Will it become a classic like the John Wayne version? No. And that's for many reasons, one being the presence of John Wayne and the bigness of that film when it was originally released. Also, today's films become award-winners and box office hits but rarely become classics because they aren't savored over the years like older films had been prior to VHS, DVD and cable. Films are rarely re-released in theaters and when they are they are "new improved" versions. Classic film festivals are not as common. Network (edited) debuts on TV are no longer the event they once were. Sequels were once made to allow the public just one more glimpse of a fond character. John Wayne's version had the ability to be an award-winning box office champ before VHS. This meant when it was re-released in theaters and then shown on network TV, the public sought it out because it wasn't readily available on video three months after it was released. How many people said they would give Jeff Bridges' movie a chance but wait for it on DVD....and then lost interest? In 3 months!!! Jeff Bridges name won't be associated with TRUE GRIT in the same way as John Wayne's name. John Wayne placing the reins in his mouth, the revolver in his left hand and spinning his rifle in the right will forever be the iconic image associated with TRUE GRIT. Gary Cooper in HIGH NOON, Alan Ladd in SHANE. John Wayne in TRUE GRIT. No matter how many remakes they will never be replaced. The collective embrace of a film plays a large role in making a film a true classic.

Pointless Remake

My view of a remake is that it needs something which differentiates itcompletely from the original. A new angle on the story maybe, spectacular special effects, modernised theme etc.True Grit didn't strike me as having any of these, and since John Waynepretty ably played both Rooster Cogburn, and the plot was littledifferent to the original, I was left wondering why anyone would wantto remake this particular classic. It is undoubtedly well made, produced, filmed, acted etc. and theviolent scenes depicted more realistically and in greater technicolourdetail than the original. But that was the only differentiator I couldsee and for me it left that abiding question; Why would you bother?

insomniac_rod 01 May 2012

Rooster Cogburn, ultimate bad-ass in the Western.

Another example of how Cohen brothers can make a really simply film andturn it into something admirable. Not 100% a Western, "True Grit" explores the unlikely "work"relationship between an U.S. Marshall and a vengeful girl. The story is simply but the events make it truly enjoyable, creative, interesting. Rooster Cogburn may be one of the most bad-ass charactersin recent cinema history. The acting is top notch. Jeff Bridges demonstrates once again he's amagnificent actor that can play any character. The movie is accessible for all audiences. I mean, you don't need to bea fan of the brothers in order to enjoy it.

PWNYCNY 30 April 2012

What a wonderful movie.

Although considered a remake, this movie differs significantly from itspredecessor. In the 1969 movie the story revolves around the RoosterCogburn, in this movie the focus of the story is the 14 year old girl.In the 1969 movie Rooster Cognburn is a larger than life character; inthis movie he is portrayed as having many flaws. In the 1969 movie muchof the violence is played down, in this movie the violence is explicit. In the 1969 movie Mattie seems older than 14 years old, in this movieMattie is barely an adolescent. The 1969 movie showcased John Wayne, this movie is more or less has an ensemble cast. The 1969 moviepresents a straight forward plot, in this movie the story is morecomplex and reveals more about the culture in which the story is set.Instead of trying to recreate the John Wayne role, Jeff Bridgespresents a different type of Rooster Cogburn. The Bridges' Cogburn is abroken down man, hardly an heroic type, yet still endearing. Thecharacter is drunk, violent, and a social outcast, yet still commandsrespect due to Bridges' skillful performance. A lesser actor would havemade Rooster Cognurn seem a caricature or buffoon; under Mr. Bridgesthat pitfall is avoided. However, accolades are in order for HailieSteinfeld who plays Mattie, the 14 year old girl. She succeeds incarrying this movie and is the star. Her performance is strong andappealing and provides an excellent role model for children. Althoughthe movie includes a certain amount of graphic violence not suitablefor young children, the movie sends a positive message to childrenregarding courage, virtue, responsibility and loyalty. The ending ofthe movie is especially effective. What a wonderful movie.

Blown Away by Greatness!

A few days ago my father and I watched the original True Grit with "TheDuke", John Wayne. This was the only John Wayne movie that I have beenable to stomach as a whole, because most of the time, I found hismovies to be bland. That being said, the original left me in love witha film for the very first time. I thus then needed to see the new onedirected by the Coen Brothers. In the theaters I had plenty of laughs because of the great dialogueincluded in the film. The Coen Bros. did a great job incorporating someof my favorite lines from the original into their work. In my opinionJeff Bridges played a better Rooster Cogburn than "The Duke". Bridgeshas really improved in my eyes because of his acting in this film. The Coen Bros and Jeff Bridges have provided me with a new favoritemovie! It's a must see!

Definitely a good movie to see

This review is from: True Grit (2010) (Amazon Instant Video) After reading about the differences between this version and the 1969 one I was pleased to see a great film in its own right. It does not (and is not) a remake of the 1969 version but stands as another retelling of the story that is done well. It is a solid four stars in my opinion.

A Pulp Fiction rip off, so to speek

A very entertaining movie based on a genius dialogue. But it's hard notto compare the overall impression to that of Tarantinos Pulp Fiction interms of genre-crossover-experiments. In this perspective, True Gritpositions itself as a post-modern production, where Monty Python-likedialogue meets ultra violence. The Cohen brothers does their best totender the audience with twisted anecdotes of the west, masters as theyare. But the sole appearance of a fall into a pit of snakes á laSpielburg leaves you wondering if this is a standalone masterpiece or aclumsy remake of more than one movie. I'm entertained but I long for anon-Hollywood Cohen production.

AndrePhilidor 25 April 2012

Excellent film.

As a rule, remakes should be relegated to the waste bin. This is one ofthe few exceptions. Largely due to Hailee Steinfleld, age 15,portraying 14 year old Mattie Ross. Totally believable, convincing andperfect in the role. Persuasive enough so you have no doubt when sheconfidently holds her own and is not about to be hornswoggled byadults, not by the horse trader from whom she buys a sting of ponies, nor by the drunkard Rooster Cogburn, excellently played by John Waynein the original, and here by Jeff Bridges. I so enjoyed both movies, Ihad to read the book which I just finished this evening. Both films aretrue to the written novel. I recommend both films for all audiences.

I'm glad I changed my mind

There are a lot of people who are "puritans" about old movies and don'tlike seeing them remade. Usually, I count myself as one which is why Iwas reluctant to see this film. Today, however, curiosity got the bestof me and I'm glad I changed my mind. Don't get me wrong, I stillprefer the 1969 version, but the makers of this film didn't dishonorit. It says volumes for Jeff Bridges talents that he can take a rolemade famous by John Wayne and give it a new original twist, making ituniquely his own! There have been critics that said that Wayne got hisTrue Grit Oscar for the cumulative body of his work. They said that asRooster Cogburn, he really gave a hammy, "over the top" performancethat normally wouldn't have gotten an Oscar. Bridges makes Rooster morecomplex and darker. There are scenes in this film where you canpractically smell him from your seat. I loved the scene where he wastrying to shoot that cornbread he tossed in the air. The screenwritersstayed faithful to Charles Portis's novel and its cute dialogue and Isalute them for that. To me, the one improvement over the original isnewcomer Haille Steinfeld. She is amazing as the young heroine MattieRoss. Critics are lauding Bridges for his portrayal but lets not forgetthis incredible young newcomer. She is skies above Kim Darby'sportrayal. When it came down to it, Darby was in many ways just brattyand annoying. Steinfeld makes her courageous and strong as well. I alsowanted to salute Matt Damon for taking on Glenn Campbell's old role. For you trivia lovers, they originally wanted Elvis to do it but hewanted too much money. SPOILER ALERT the only beef I have with thisfilm is the rather downbeat ending when we see a middle aged Mattievisiting Rooster's grave. I prefer the original where Wayne jumped overthe fence at the end. It was more upbeat.

24 April 2012

Excellent, all around.

I honestly think you would have to be without any sense of what constitutes good film making and acting to NOT like this movie. While I understand that someone's wife went to sleep in the first fifteen minutes and someone else (Beaumont Nantucket) didn't like it because it was "dull" (read: nothing blew up), I feel that anyone with the slightest idea of what makes a movie a GOOD movie will certainly like this movie. Jeff Bridges is NOT John Wayne, and, that being said, makes a much better Rooster than John. John was restricted by what he could do as an actor acting in the time the film was made. Jeff is not under such restrictions. Hailee, the actress playing Mattie Ross, deserves the Oscar for her work, if for nothing else other than the seamless way she can shift from "too grown up for her age" to childlike fear in a blink of an eye. The Coen deserve the Oscar just for taking on the project. Come on folks! Things don't have to blow up all the time in order to make a good movie. Most of the time helping your fellow man instead of yourself makes a good movie. It is ALWAYS the right thing in real life.
