I first saw this film on TV in early August,1977,and laughed all the waythrough it.This trio of pathologically stupid villains is first rate, andthey obviously had a lot of fun doing their parts. If you can imagine theThree Stooges as homicidal maniacs, you've got a good idea of what toexpect.Perhaps it was best to play them that way.If you recall times whenthese three guys played villains in a realistic fashion,to do otherwisethanthey did in "Hannie Caulder"would have been much too gross andbrutal.Yet,with increasing time and sensitivity,my outlook has changed.Rapeand murder are NOT funny.Ask anyone who has been sexually or physicallyabused, and you'll get the answer.Welch looks good(when has she not?),and asusual does the minimal amount of acting.Culp's portrayal isinteresting, being more world-weary,and cynically good-natured than thebloodthirsty,or quietly vindicative characters we've seen in otherfilms(i.e.Nevada Smith).Lee is quite amiable and enjoyable, but I didn'tthink that he was quite realistic, given the physical location.(He wouldhavebeen more believable in a British colony or Europe.)So,watch thisfilm, enjoythe antics of the Clemmons Brothers, but remember that rape is an act ofpower over another human being.

The "rape revenge" story has been told many times in the past, but I doubt few films have ever portrayed it with comedic elements. The villainous trio of Ernest Borgnine, Jack Elam, and Strother Martin can never seem to rob banks right. After another failed attempt, they happen upon Raquel Welch after they murder her husband in cold blood. After raping her, they leave her for dead, burning down her home. She escapes wearing just a blanket, and meets up with bounty hunter Robert Culp. He agrees to show her how to shoot, so she can exact her revenge. Her gunfighting technique is tested when she helps Culp fight off bandits while they are visiting Christopher Lee, a gunsmith who fashions Caulder a custom revolver. Eventually, Culp and Welch meet up with the three villains, and a lot of people die.To highlight the good first, Robert Culp is such a natural actor, it is a shame he has had to resort to trash like the "Silent Night, Deadly Night" series as of late. His Thomas Price character is sympathetic and tough, without being another superhero cowboy who never gets hurt or never has a feeling. Christopher Lee is a revelation as the gunsmith Bailey. Taken out of his usual horror film, he shows he can really act without having to pop fangs in his mouth or wrap himself in toilet paper and limp after turn of the century archaeologists. His role is brief, but good. Burt Kennedy, a veteran Western director, knows his stuff. The gunfight at Lee's home is as well shot as any action sequence today, without relying on special effects or CGI. The obligatory romance between Welch and Culp is also handled very well, as they tentatively fall for each other. The three brother rapists, played by the usually reliable Martin, Elam, and Borgnine, are written like they just stepped out of a Marx Brothers or Three Stooges movie. They spend most of their scenes either arguing like five year olds, or blowing innocent people away. As a viewer, you already hate them enough for their crimes without the screenwriter having to resort to weak "funny" scenes to show how awful they are. I was not sure if this was a drama, or a weak Western comedy along the lines of "Dirty Dingus Magee," especially when the soundtrack sometimes does the "funny music," accentuating the "funny" rapists' actions.Poor Raquel Welch. She is gorgeous, but the director and writer did not have enough confidence in her to fully write a character for her. In her first few scenes, she does not have any dialogue! Most of her scenes involve a peek-a-boo game of showing various parts of her body without resorting to full nudity. Fine for a comedy, but I did not think we should be ogling a recent rape victim and widow. The introduction of a mysterious man in black (no, not Johnny Cash) to help Caulder was probably supposed to bathe the film in an air of mysticism, but the stunt feels weak and half thought out. His presence is never explained, as if the writer wanted the viewer to draw their own conclusions. As Welch begins gunning for her prey, she keeps having flashbacks to her rape and hearing Culp's advice in her ears during the gunfights. The screenwriter hits us over the head with this over and over again, but decides we are smart enough to analyze a character who shows up for no other reason than to get Welch out of a jam. Poor judgement on the writer's part.Due to the aforementioned positives, I do slightly recommend "Hannie Caulder," but do not watch this for a positive Western female role model. This is definitely a chauvinistic idea of a vengeful, beautiful female gunfighter. This is rated (R) for some physical violence, strong gun violence, strong sexual violence, gore, profanity, very brief female nudity, and sexual references.

Is this Raquel Welch's finest hour? Perhaps. She shows good depth and emotion here. She also elicits sympathy andyou cheer for her when her revenge is complete, although it's temperedwith sadness because the new man she loves (Culp) is dead and with heronly in spirit.Burt Kennedy filled this movie with tons of humor, courtesy of theTerrible Trio: Strother Martin, Ernie Borgnine and Jack Elam. Asstrange as this sounds, for a raping, murdering, no account good fornothing,Strother Martin is a riot!Chris Lee does a nifty character turn as a gunsmith, but it's Culp'scool professionalism along with Welch that drives this solid, entertaining Spaghetti-patterned western, which was produced by herthen-husband Pat Curtis and England' Tony Tensor of horror factory,Tigon Films. My friend Cindy and I saw it at the drive-in three times the week itcame out.

Three outlaw brothers rob a bank and happen upon a ranch where theyaggressively raped the lady of the house and murder her husband in coldblood. Wanting revenge, Hannie Caulder comes across a bounty hunter whoshe constantly begs to help her and after some time he decides to teachher how to be a gunfighter so she can gun down those responsible. This British shot at a copy-and-paste spaghetti westerner mainly setsitself out from the pack, because its protagonist is a gun-toutingwoman hell-bent on blood shed, while sporting nothing much but a skimpyponcho and being strapped up in some tight pants. Which no doubt canbe, quite a delightful sight! "Hannie Caulder" is an engaging andrather solid western drama that delivers gritty and spirited actionspurts where the red stuff runs freely, fruitful characters (well, mainly the three vulgar brothers), a melodramatic script plays it toughwith it's highly witty and quite cheeky humour and how can you go passa small, but neat role by the iconic Christopher Lee playing agun-maker.While, the main story is about Raquel Welch's character building up asteady rapport with Robert Culp's gunslinger and then putting hertraining to good use. I actually found it more interesting when thetale was focusing on the barbaric brothers' and their comicalinterplay. Ernst Borgnine, Strother Martin and Jack Elam were sturdy intheir hammy roles and they aren't likable characters, but they do givethe film its biting personality. Welch's at the helm performance isfine, but it's her irresistible presence that really shines through.Culp is surprisingly good and quite believable in the drifter role.Although there's one really vague character, which enters the arenaplayed by the harden Stephen Boyd as The Preacher. His inclusion for mewas rather baffling and more of a coincidence to the story. I was justexpecting more to come from this aspect of the story, since hischaracter made a somewhat a forcible opening appearance. The plot'slayout is a simple revenge story that truly gets on with it and movesback and forth between the two groups, giving enough screen time toeach. But it doesn't go into any real depth about Hannie's horrificexperience or character development. The gallant direction by Burt Kennedy rallies up some thrillingshowdowns like that of the grand standoff in a deserted fort and theillustrated rape scene is really intense. Throughout Kennedy manages tobuild up a sense of urgency and also adding a fair share of piercingvisuals that contrast beautifully with the picturesque backdrop thatfinds its way in mostly every frame. This is captured by EdwardScaife's stylishly fluent and at times rather inspired photography.Even the rip-roaring music score by Ken Thorne escalates enough quickdraws and sudden lively cues. The score is nothing overtly memorable, but it does its job."Hannie Caulder" isn't groundbreaking, but this intriguing sharpshooter is better than the norm.

Okay, it's a black comedy. But it's a movie full of love because Burt Kennedy makes everyone look good. His camera treats nobody and nothingdismissively. Robert Culp, with a selflessnessthat we wish could be taken for granted in thereal world, wants to teach Raquel Welch how touse a gun. But just a moment, we need a suitablegun for a woman, so let's go to the gunsmith andwatch as the gun is manufactured. What other movieever thought to tip its hat respectfully to thecraft of gunsmithing? Kennedy seems, like Chaucer, capable of conveying enthusiasm about everythinghe sees.

In the third of what might be considered Raquel Welch's Western trilogy(1968's "Bandolero!," 1969's "100 Rifles" and the picture in questionhere, 1971's "Hannie Caulder"), we find the late-'60s' foremost sexgoddess in very fine form indeed, despite the absence of bikinis, furlined or otherwise. "Hannie Caulder" is a British picture that wasfilmed in Spain, though set in the American Southwest and Mexico; doesits best to emulate an Italian spaghetti Western; and has as its star awoman of mixed Bolivian/Irish descent. (I will give your mind a momentto absorb this international stew while I fondly reminisce on thejolting impact that Raquel Welch had on the puberties of millions of usbaby boomer boys, by dint of her appearances in such mid-'60s films as"One Million Years B.C." and "Fathom.") In the '71 picture, Raquel (asthe end credits inform us) IS Hannie Caulder, the wife of a rancher, whose life takes an abrupt turn for the worse when the bumbling ClemensBrothers--Emmett, Frank and Rufus (played, respectively, by ErnestBorgnine, Jack Elam and Strother Martin)--fleeing from a botchedholdup, kill her man, gang rape her, burn down her home and leave herfor dead. Fortunately for the widow Caulder, she soon makes theacquaintance of Thomas Luther Price, a renowned bounty hunter(supremely well played by Robert Culp), who reluctantly teaches her thearts of shooting and the quick draw. Thus, before long, Hannie issuitably prepared to ride down the ol' vengeance trail....Though "Hannie Caulder" tells what is in essence a simple story, it isat least a compact one, with little flab. The picture is quite gorgeousto look at (and no, I'm not referring to Raquel here), with stunningscenery and color; a handsome production, to be sure, largely due, Isuppose, to producer Patrick Curtis (Welch's husband at the time). Thefilm sports a wonderful Western theme, thanks to Ken Thorne, anddirector Burt Kennedy (who had previously helmed such popular oaters as"The War Wagon," "Support Your Local Sheriff" and its follow-up,"Support Your Local Gunfighter," and the Frank Sinatra Western "DirtyDingus Magee") adds some imaginative touches (I love that POV shot downa rifle's double barrel!). As for Hannie's nemeses, although the"Maltin Movie Guide" refers to the Clemens Brothers' antics as "ThreeStooges"-like, I prefer the description of them to be found in thewonderful film book "DVD Delirium 3": "a malodorous triple-scoop ofpond scum"! Still, without their shenanigans, this film would bevirtually devoid of humor, although Moe, Larry and Curly were never asseriously nasty and violent as this trio. (The film, by the way, DOESget fairly violent at times, with lots of spurting red stuff; Peckinpahmight have been pleased with it.) It must be added that althoughRacky's acting is just fine here, she really doesn't get to stretch herthesping abilities all that much, and her sexuality is de-emphasizedbehind an Eastwoodesque poncho (although her shrunk-to-fit leatherbreeches do look pretty hot on her). Still, the lady looks great; she'dlook good in burlap sacking, of course, and still, remarkably, looksfantastic today, a full 40 years later. By default, it is RobertCulp--here three years after his three-year stint on TV's "I Spy"--asthe bearded, bespectacled but supercool bounty hunter who easily walksaway with the film's acting honors; he is simply terrific. Besides hisalways welcome presence, "Hannie Caulder" gives us a nice supportingrole by Christopher Lee as an extremely talented gunsmith, as well as'50s sex goddess Diana Dors doing a cameo as a bloated bordello madame. In all, a pretty darn good Western, with a satisfying resolution. If"Bandolero!" taught us that it is not a good idea to force your "sexualfavors" on a Mexican woman who is anywhere near a six-shooter, "HannieCaulder" drives home a similar message threefold...with a vengeance!

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. There isn't a lot ofaction, or flash, though there is certainly some. It's just a masterful look at a smalllittle piece of the old west.Others have mentioned how "funny" the bad guys are in this flick. Well,Strother Martin certainly does his usual comic turns, but the three villains are FARfrom humorous. They are rapists, after all. Martin's foolishness is used onlyto make us further dislike the three desperados. This is not a comedy at all, it'sa serious story along the lines of "Once Upon A Time In the West."The real key to this movie is Culp, and the character he was lucky enough toplay. His reserved, spectacled bounty hunter is magnetic and quite unique. You can't take your eyes off of him, even when Raquel is in the samescene.-And Welch is also amazing in this. I wouldn't be surprised if this is herpersonal favorite role of all time. If you get a chance to see this, don't miss it. You'll either hate it orlove it. I doubt there's much room in-between on this one.

I think this may be one of my favorites of westerns because of the angle it takes on revenge. Ironically enough, it is the hardened bounty hunter who tries to persuade Hannie Caulder to walk away from the situation. A reversal of roles, very interesting for a movie made back in the late sixties, several years before the Women's Movement. Welch's acting is believable and Robert Culp is wonderful as Thomas Luther Price. Christopher Lee is great as the gunsmith who watches the relationship between Caulder and Price grow and tries to persuade Caulder to "throw her gun in the water bucket and ride out with Thomas and don't look back". The movie does not end on an entirely positive note either - as Caulder kills the last of the Clements brothers, her revenge is complete, but Price's words come back to her "win or lose, you lose Hannie Caulder". I believe that this movie, for all it's violence does have an undercurrent of anti-gun, anti-violence solutions to such problems. And I especially liked the fact that Hannie Caulder was portrayed as a strong woman. She knew what she wanted, and she had the strength to see it through, no matter what the consequences were. An interesting western to watch and think about.

Hannie Caulder is set in the American Wild West where three scumbagbrother's Emmtt (Ernest Borgnine), Frank (Jack Elam) & Rusfus Clemens(Strother Martin) rob a bank & in the process kill a few people, theyride off chased by local soldiers. Eventually they find themselves at aranch owned by Jim Caulder whom Rufus brutally kills, inside the housethe three brother's find Jim's wife Hannie (Raquel Welch) & they takeit in turns to beat & rape her before setting the house on fire &riding off into the distance. Hannie is left for dead but survives & bychance a bounty hunter named Thomas Luther Price (Robert Price) findsher, Hannie convinces him to show her how to shoot properly in anattempt to hunt down the Clemens brother's & take revenge by killingthem...This English production was directed by Burt Kennedy & was produced inpart by Tigon films who were responsible for a slew of Anglo horrorfilms such as Curse of the Crimsn Altar (1968), The Blood Beast Terror(1968), The Haunted House of Horror (1969), The Beast in the Cellar(1970), Blood on Satan's Claw (1971), Doomwatch (1972) & Virgin Witch(1972) so this cross between an exploitation flick & a spaghettiWestern on the surface seemed like a strange choice of film for Tigonto make. Anyway, the script by director Kennedy & David Haft under theodd pseudonym of Z.X. Jones is an entertaining cross between a SergioLeone Western & I Spit on Your Grave (1978) with a touch of MontyPython style slapstick thrown there for good measure. It's a curiousmixture that isn't entirely successful but at the same time providesgood entertainment, it's surprisingly violent & bloody on occasionwhich almost seems at odds with t's Three Stooges type slapstick anticsof the main villains who one moment can be nasty pieces of work & thenext bumbling idiots. The character of Hannie Caulder is kept to aminimum & she barely says a word, Robert Culp's bounty hunter is a goodlikable character who gets most of the dialogue. The film surprised meas it killed off one of it's leading character's which you don't seetoo often although it's not perfect as there are pacing problem's withthe middle third of it being a tad dull, you never find out who the manin black is or what his motives are along with never discovering whythat gang of Mexicans attack the gun-maker & anyone who has seen HannieCaulder will know what I'm talking about. Overall though I' say this isa neat little Western with a commendably dark exploitative edge whenit's not trying to be a comedy.Director Kennedy does a good job, unfortunately I was forced to watch ahideously grainy, scratched to buggery blown up pan and scan versionwhich frankly looked horrible where only the opening & closing creditswere letter-boxed at it's correct ratio of 2:35:1 & I can only imaginehow much better the film looks presented that way throughout. Set inAmerica & Mexico it was actually shot in Spain which would have beencheaper for a British based company like Tigon. It looks nice enoughwith good period detail & some decent shoot outs & action. There's somegory gunshot wounds & a fairly explicit rape which is just aboutgraphic enough to get it's point across without slipping into pureunnecessary exploitation. For those wondering Raquel Welch does not getnaked in this film at any stage.Technically the film is fine with decent enough production values, goodsets, costumes & period detail although it does use the day-for-nightprocess on a few occasions which I never like. The acting is prettygood by a strong cast including Diana Dors & an unusual role forChristopher Lee, Welch looks nice enough but isn't much of an actressso maybe it's a good thing she doesn't have to say a lot.Hannie Caulder is a neat rape/revenge Western that has some oddballcomedy moments in it as well, it's a mixture that doesn't always workperfectly but it's entertaining all the same & definitely worth a watchpreferably in it's original widescreen ratio if at all possible.Overall I liked it, what more can I say?

This review is from: Hannie Caulder [VHS] (VHS Tape) Hannie Caulder is a Western that isn't horrible, but could have been much more than what it is. Raquel Welch plays a woman whose husband is killed, and the killer rape her and burn down her house. The killers are played by veteran character actors (and perennial Western movie actors)Ernest Borgnine, Strother Martin, and Jack Elam. Tracking the three men, she crosses paths with a sage bounty hunter, played by Robert Culp, who teaches her how to shoot and the ins and outs of gunfighting. Together, they take off in pursuit of the three men. This movie had a lot of potential, but wastes it in several ways. The script can't find a balance between her being too hard or two soft, so she seems both, negating the believability of the premise. The three men, as directed by veteran Western director Burt Kennedy, also tries to have it both ways with them being savage and cartoonishly humorous. Culp is fine in his role, but can only do so much when the focus is supposed to be on Welch's character. This is a film that could be remade and redone better.

I caught this on the tube, having not seen it in over 30 years. I was expecting something very campy, in keeping with Raquel Welch's overall film oeuvre and was rather pleasantly surprised. Despite flaws, this is an above average western with the unusual addition of a strong female protagonist.Hannie Caulder is raped and left for dead by a gang of three outlaws (Strother Martin, Jack Elam and Ernest Borgnine...reprising roles that each of them played over the years many times). She hooks up with a bounty hunter (Robert Culp) who teaches her how to shoot so she can get revenge on the rapists.Certainly there are some aspects of this film that are severely dated: Raquel Welch hangs around in a poncho for the first half of the film...a kinda mini-dress with apparently nothing underneath, so you find yourself looking salaciously to see some flesh. This is a Playboy magazine-like detail that is more distracting than anything else...it plays off of Ms. Welch's beauty (and she is absolutely at the peak of her loveliness here) and the image of her in nothing-but-a-short-poncho is quite iconic. But it's dumb...how on earth can she ride a horse in the desert with NOTHING on the lower half of her body? Ouch! Later, she acquires a pair of super-tight deerskin slacks, which is equally ridiculous. No woman of the 1800's would have been caught dead in men's clothing. Neither would one have worn her hair long and straight or tons of black mascara. This superimposing of modern styles on a period drama is particularly badly handled and quite unnecessary, as Ms. Welch was more than beautiful enough to handle this role in proper period attire.Robert Culp is delightful in an unexpected turn as a be-spectacled bounty hunter with a gentlemanly demeanor. The budding romance between his character, Price, and Hannie is nicely handled. This is a good example of how unexpected characters often blend better romantically than "conventional" stock characters. Christopher Lee has a nice supporting role as a grisly old gunmaker -- further evidence that he's a fine actor who deserved a lot better than the typical horror movie roles he often got stuck with. The worst of this film is the comedic treatment of the three gangsters. If they had been treated more seriously, the rape would be more devastating (Price wants Hannie to forget about it and go off with him) adn it's aftermath more understandable. The attitudes about rape here are very simplistic and dated, unfortunately, but if you watch other movies about rape victims from the same era, you will see it was a standard treatment. However, comedic villains are not frightening nor do they warrant being killed off, so the "Three Stooges" quality defeats much of the thrust of the plot.Despite these flaws, "Hannie Caulder" is consistently interesting and generally well-acted, with good cinematography. It represents a very rare attempt to show a western with a female protagonist, let alone an "action hero" type who gets to ride and shoot and defend herself! The budding feminism that produced this still had a long way to go in terms of understanding the psychology of rape, but compare "Hannie Caulder" to such otherwise excellent modern westerns such as "Unforgiven" or "Open Range" where the female parts are limited to prostitutes or schoolmarms. It would be fascinating to see this remade today with some of these elements addressed (the rape, the "funny" rapists). However, this is a nicely done and unusual western drama from a period where corny Spaghetti Westerns were the norm. It took some guts and creativity to break that mold and "Hannie Caulder" is the interesting result. Hopefully, they will get this out on DVD one of these days...it would be fascinating to hear commentary from the surviving cast members about this film.

Spoilers Raquel Welsh stars as Hannie Caulder the woman who watches aband of outlaws (the Clemens family, led by Emmett - Ernest Borgnine)kill her husband, rape her and leave her for dead. Hannie recovers andis befriended by a gunslinger Thomas Luther Price, played by RobertCulp. He gets her a good gun, and trains her to win at gun fighting.Hannie wants revenge and seeks the three who destroyed her life. Sheand Mr. Price set out to find the Clemens gang. Along the way, Mr Pricegets killed by Emmett Clemens. In the first gunfight Hannie is in andfor the first time ever, a woman who was going to kill a man actuallyhad me distracted. This distraction was supposed to take place in amillion movies, but, I always was able to focus my attention on thefact that if I were that guy, I would kill that woman, because shewants to kill me.NOT THIS TIME AND NOT THIS WOMAN! As Hannie Caulder, Raquel was too hot! It is the only time a woman'slooks truly were a distraction. If all of those fights were my fightsand were real, I would finally have been killed against this woman!Raquel brought a gentleness and a likableness to a violent nasty role. You watch her at the end and you hope she can return to her life andlive with the killings. However, you know she will never be the same asshe was.

One of the better shoot-em-ups I've seen. Welch turned in her usuallackluster performance as the female version of Josey Wales, but Culp andthe Clemens boys kept things moving right along. Borgnine, Elam, & Martinwere superb as the hilarious, yet dangerous "3 Stooges" villains. Theirslapstick antics had me rolling in the floor more than once. Why did thesilent gunfighter hang around the old prison all the time? Where did hesleep, what did he do all day? Who kept his clothes so nicely pressed? Lotsof holes in this one, but a thoroughly enjoyable western.
06 May 2012
This is NOT simply a movie about a woman who gets raped and turns bitter or who, in the words of Thomas Luther Price, Robert Culp's character, "wants to be a man." This is a movie about a woman who is brutally raped all night by the same three men who murdered her husband and who later burn down her home. This seems to be a point that neither Tom Price nor previous reviewers seem to have picked up on though it should be a rather obvious one. Mrs. Caulder does not want to be wooed by Mr. Price or anyone else. She has lost everything in the space of one night and she has absolutely no one who understands or even seems to care or to whom she can turn to talk to about it. Placed in juxtaposition to this very serious theme is another movie altogether... a movie that does not belong in the same one with Hannie Caulder's rape, the horrifying loss of her husband, and her search for some kind of resolution. It doesn't belong there because it is too much it's own comedy. This is the movie that Ernest Borgnine, Strother Martin, and Jack Elam are in. These three are in a comedy that, in the opinion of this reviewer, far surpasses anything that The Three Stooges ever did in humor. They are hysterically funny, and this is the problem. While some comic relief might be helpful in a movie that is so serious and horrifying, it should not be allowed to overwhelm the plot. Unfortunately it does and spoils much of the serious tone of the whole film.
chaos-rampant 06 May 2012
By 1971 the ripples the spaghetti western movement were in full effectin both sides of the Atlantic and Hannie Caulder is definitely aproduct of those times and the progeny of the films of Leone, Corbuccior Parolini more than the traditional oaters of John Ford or AnthonyMann. It's evident in the bloody gunshots, the sexual violence and theway the revenge plot unfolds.Undoubtedly part of the genre revisionism that turned the westernupside down in the early 70's is the genre reversal tactics thatdirector Burt Kennedy employs. We had seen a woman adopting atraditionally masculine role in the bossy, no-nonsense, gun-tottingsaloon owner Joan Crawford played in Johnny Guitar. Hannie Caulderhowever takes a different approach and adopts almost verbatim thenarrative skeleton of a typical spaghetti western - the anti-hero,traumatized by a past event, looking for revenge. Then proceeds to castthe beautiful Raquel Welch (and her tanned, well toned thighs) in arole that in Italy would have been exclusive to the likes of FrancoNero, Anthony Steffen or Maurizio Merli.Three bank robbers on the run from the Mexican Federales stop in ahorse station, kill the owner, rape the wife, burn the place down andleave her to die. A passing bounty hunter takes the wife under his wingand travels with her to Mexico to meet a gun maker that used to workfor the Confederates. It's there that the typical "training" part ofthe anti-heroine takes place and where she makes the turn from a"wounded animal" to a woman coming to terms with the path of revengeshe has chosen. By the end of the movie Hannie Caulder has transformedto a gutsy, smart and wisecracking antiheroine and in no uncertainterms has embodied the "angel of death" aspect of the black-cladantiheroes of the spaghetti western - which is also evident in thefinal fight that takes place in the middle of a sandstorm.A major asset of the film is the cast. Not because they turn in Oscarworthy performances - they don't. But it's always heart-warming to seeso many familiar faces in the same film. Apart from the ravishing missWelch, Christopher Lee appears in a brief role as the gunmaker (andit's funny to hear his British accent so far removed from the foggysets of Hammer studios), Ernest Borgnine yells his way through the film(annoyingly so) as the leader of the three bank robbers and Jack Elamand Strother Martin steal every scene as the other two brothers of thisformidable trio.

I when I saw this movie I was hesitant about buying because I could picture Raquel Welch being in a western. Boy was I wrong! Raquel Welch played the role of Hannie Caulder living in a small house with here husband. Ernest Borginine, Jack Elam and Rufus Clemens play the role of three ruthless cowboys. When the 3 brothers pay Hannie Caulder visit things turn ugly and Hannie sets out for revenge. Enter Robert Culp who plays the role Thomas Luther Price a bounty hunter who takes Hannie under his wing. Price teaches Hannie how to shoot a gun and that's when things start to get interesting. If you're a Raquel fan you'll enjoy this different but none the less great movie. The movie starts out slow but shifts into hide gear not long after it starts.

HANNIE CAULDER is a real find. That it's well-made is not reallysurprising considering it's directed by the very efficient BurtKennedy. What is surprising is that it's cast would lead you to believethere's a camp classic awaiting.Raquel Welch is Hannie, seeking revenge on the three creepy hooliganswho've beaten her, raped her and left her for dead. Welch gives aterrific and spirited performance and she's helped out a lot by afirst-rate supporting cast. Ernest Borgnine, Jack Elam, and StrotherMartin are the villains and Robert Culp is Hannie's reluctantsavior/mentor. The film is full of odd touches and some of the killingsare quite cleverly executed. The bizarre cast also includes cultChristopher Lee and Diana Dors, who plays a sympathetic madam.

This western is centered on three outlaws, three brothers who skim the frontier, as much as they can, and they can very little. They kill for pleasure and also to compensate their inability at robbing a bank properly or attacking a stage coach successfully. They are flunkies in the field. They run into a stagecoach station and they kill the station master, rape his wife and burn the station to the earth. Then the wife who wants vengeance runs into a bounty hunter. She will learn the trade and go through with her vengeance. The details create the suspense of the film and give it a real deep emotional value.
