In the Age of the Crusades in the Fourteenth Century, the noblemanBehmen of Bleibruk (Nicolas Cage) joins the Crusades with his comradeFelson (Ron Pearlman) battling against the unholy enemies in the nameof the Church. Years after, they slaughter a city full of women andchildren and Behmen and Felson desert the army of God disappointed withthe Church and return home.Along their journey, they find the Black Plague everywhere until theyreach a town where they buy horses and supplies. However, Behmen isrecognized by his sword's crest and arrested with Felson in thedungeons. The Cardinal D'Ambroise (Christopher Lee) proposes them tojoin the knight Eckhart (Ulrich Thomsen), who grieved the loss of hiswife and his daughter, and the priest Debelzaq (Stephen Campbell Moore)to deliver the Black Witch (Claire Foy), accused to be responsible forthe Black Plague, to the Abbey at Severac, where the monks possess thelast copy of an ancient book of rituals that will destroy the Witch'spowers and end the Plague. Behmen promises a fair trial to the youngster and the swindler Hagamar(Stephen Graham) guides the group through a dangerous way. Along theirjourney, they meet the altar boy Kay (Robert Sheehan) that wants to bea knight and join the team. Sooner Behmen concludes that the girl isreally a witch but when they reach the monastery, they realize that thedanger is even greater than they have imagined."Season of the Witches" is a reasonable adventure full of specialeffects with a silly conclusion. The film is entertaining and not asbad as many critics and viewers have written. The greatest flaw in theplot is to use the absurd witch hunting promoted by the Church in theMiddle Ages and gives a kind of endorsement to the action of theChurch, showing the existence of real witches. The final fight againstthe powerful beast is dreadful. My vote is six.Title (Brazil): "Caça às Bruxas" ("Witches Hunting")

Season of the Witch is probably the best film that Dominic Sena hasmanaged to do. That is not really high praise considering the qualityof his previous work, consisting of dull, run of the mill, "action"films such as Swordfish and Gone in 60 Seconds, which is coincidentlythe amount of time it takes you to fall asleep watching it. Season ofthe Witch probably won't make you fall asleep, but by the time it getsto the end you will be probably be ready for bed.The set up is that Nicolas Cage and Ron Pearlman play a couple ofKnights, fighting in the crusades, who suddenly have an epiphany thatslaughtering loads of innocent women and children probably isn't themost godly thing to do, so decide to walk away from their lifestyle asholy warriors in a rather aimless manner without any real plan what todo next. On the way to goodness knows where they decide to stop off ata city for some supplies for their trip, to wherever that may be, andthen get rumbled as a pair of deserters. News spreads fast in theselands. After being thrown in jail for a while they get roped intotransporting a suspected witch from the city off to a monastery so shecan be dealt with appropriately. Both Cage and Perlman are rather convincing as a pair of grizzledcompanions and it is a shame that their obvious chemistry wasunderused. Throwing in a few more one-liners and witty asides wouldhave made the story romp along at a bit of a better pace and injected abit more humour to go along with the action. The rest of the cast justabout did enough to earn their salaries, with Claire Foy going waybeyond what was required of her with a wickedly smirky performance. The actual action was fairly enjoyable, if not slightly clichéd. Aropey rope bridge is always a great set-piece for adding a bit oftension and that scene in particular was executed pretty well. Thefights were on the whole exciting and the great thing was that youcould actually see what was going on, a huge positive in my books in anage where tripods are harder to acquire than a sackful of diamonds. Thething that let these action sequences down, and the film as a whole wasthat the CGI was really shoddily put together and was a realdistraction.Overall I would say that the film isn't a must see, but probably worthchecking out if it pops on TV at some point. The overall plot is a bitdaft and thematically agnostic but is made entertaining enough withsome decent performances and enjoyable action sequences.

This is not a bad movie. Neither is it great, but nevertheless it iswatchable. It has a story. It has a plot. The acting is good. NicholasCage and Ron Perlman give credible performances. It is true that thestory is far-fetched and challenges plausibility, but it deals with thesupernatural, so that is only to be expected. Soemn of the specialeffects are cheesy, but so what? It's the story that counts and herethe story is what drives this movie. Once again, there is a frail, young woman who causes so much havoc, yet at first glance she seems soharmless. This theme, of the helpless young girl as both victim andharpy, is continued in this movie, with good results. Far from beinghokey, the story contains enough dramatic material to keep theaudience's interest. There are those who may lambast this movie, dismiss it as just another Hollywood potboiler, and they may be right.Nevertheless, the movie does present a story and does not purport to besomething that it is not, which affords the movie a modicum ofintegrity.

OMG!! I soooo wasted my time going to see this!!! I didn't even get to finish my popcorn!!And I soooo expected more from this film, Cage tried to put emotion in but he is so monotone in his acting. There is no inflection in his voice at all!! DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME WITH THIS MOVIE KEEP YOUR MONEY IN YOUR POCKET!!!!

The movie was entertaining. I thought the acting of Cage and Perlmanspecifically and a few of the others was not up to par. If you do aperiod piece you should act and sound like it rather than sound likeyou are just hanging out in LA. The casting could have been better. Ireally enjoy all things medieval. The plot was good, the scenery wasgreat. All in all it was a good way to spend a few hours. To all theCage fans - I generally enjoy him, I just don't feel that he and thispart were meant to be. During some parts of the film, the acting wasactually rather comical although I don't believe it was meant to be so.If you like period piece, especially those set during medieval times, you won't be disappointed.

"Season of the Witch" has Nicolas Cage playing a knight from theCrusades whose mission is to escort pretty girl considered as being awitch (supposedly) to her trial in a distant village. She's accused ofbringing the plague to every city she's been into. Followed by his bestpal, another knight (Ron Perlman), an altar boy (Robert Sheehan) whowants to be a knight just like them, an con man (Stephen Graham) whowill serve as a guide to the difficult journey through the woods, andtwo representants from the Church, Cage's task will prove to be one ofthe worst he'll ever have, happening right before his wish to become andeserter, abandoning the knighthood after an tragic incident.A little bit hard to swallow seeing Nic Cage playing such character(and that wig!), or believing in many of the things presented here, butit's not that difficult if you have in mind that this film is made toentertain. That's it. Forget about the countless problems this filmhas, and forget about possible inaccuracies or anything related to theera pictured here; this is a fun movie with lots of action, good fightscenes (sometimes bad captured due to weak editing), plenty ofadventurous and hilarious moments (intentional and unintentional funnyparts, the latter being every time they mention the word 'witch', itjust sounds funny). It's a great for you to sit down, relax and enjoy this film in the bestpossible way. It has some amazing surprises to show being the best antwist at the ending, making of this adventure almost an supernaturalhorror, saved the film from being just an clichéd film). Cage andPerlman making the best buddies were awesome; the actress that playsthe witch is very effective in showing two different personas, she canbe nice and sweet, and in the next moment very scary. An minor film from the director of "Kalifornia" and "Swordfish" butcertainly a great way to spend the time. There isn't much better thanthis in terms of fun, lately. Go with no regrets! 9/10

Theres nothing like a good witch story. We all have known a woman who fit the bill as a witch. The season of the witch is no different. Give me a good witch or a bad witch anytime. The special effects were fantastic. Give me a gothic theme and throw in a hero or two and I`m good to go.As far as the critcs go, I would not judge a movie you did not like to begin with. Not everyone is into witches. Nickolas Cage is a great actor. He does his thing and does it well. The season of the witch is a A+ movie. The wizard of oz has nothing on this movie. Have a fireball or should I turn you into a toad. As a man, I just love a good witch or is that a bad one ?

What is the point of a movie? A movie is to entertain you. This movie did just that for me. I enjoyed it greatly and will most likely purchase it when it comes out on DVD.

Lazy, silly and shallow medieval horror action blockbuster from Cage's"Gone in Sixty Seconds" director Dominic Sena, which doesn't goanywhere of interest but simply through the motions with littleconviction. The narrative is a run-of-a-mill, if rugged journey tale, which sadly is rather uneventful and poorly pitched with a slumberingNicolas Cage act as a deserting 14th century crusader who finds hetransporting a women suspected of witchery and who's believed to beresponsible for spreading the Black Plague. There they must take her toa monastery in the mountains to face trail and so the monks can stopthe plague, but the trek offers up some surprises for our travellers. If it wasn't for Ron Perlman's humorlessly dry and comradelyperformance, it would have been a completely bland and dour experience. What starts off as rather suggestive and atmospheric with a touch ofsuspense (bridge sequence), goes over-the-top with its religiousbigotry and in its second-rate CGI of demons and dead possessed monksin its nonsensical finale. It moves at a fast pace and the action iskinetic, but the problem lies that not much happens outside itsbrooding atmospherics of decay and despair. I was hoping for somemindless popcorn amusement, but it disappointed for most part on thataspect. I wouldn't call "Season of the Witch" one of Cage's worstfilms, but it isn't too far from it and in the end you're hoping thathe would go extreme to liven things up."I saved your ass a thousand times. Have a little faith."

Weird movie. It's got an interesting Tolkienish setting going for it, the plot ispretty good (although it drags a bit here and there), and the actorscreate characters that you can tell apart ;-).The weird part is that the eerie settings don't seem to phase thecharacters, and that they all seem so dispassionate, overall. I getthat Cage and Perlman are war-weary crusaders, but surely what theycome across in this movie should turn a hair, and yet it doesn't seemto. Even when they are swashbuckling, they seem to display less passionthan I do when confronting my Thanksgiving turkey. Nevertheless, theyare valiant until the ending, hooray. And a very thrilling ending it is! Probably worth your while.

This movie was horrible. Saw it last night. Who was Nicolas Cage trying to be? White Jesus??? Ok, I get the rebellion part, but he was way to glamourized. Ok, he rebels from the system and then saves the world from evil, or better yet, saves the little white girl with the green eyes from evil and why did the devil have a black mans voice? This movie is just short of rascist.

I went into the theater expecting an action movie in which Nicholas Cage shines. I was disappointed right from the start with the poor visuals and dreadful dialogue. There really isn't a story, and what story there was didn't flow well. I must say that this will probably be the worst movie I see this year in theaters.

Judging from what I had heard and seen from many critics I wasexpecting a pile of horse poop. So while Season of the Witch was not asbad as it could've been, to me that didn't mean much. The costume andset design are great, the effects are good if too over-reliant in thelast third of the film and Ron Perlman is a nice presence. So whatspoilt it? The two assets that spoilt it for me were the cheesy, anachronisticwriting and the characters, that were both bland and clichéd. Thestorytelling is often thin in structure and sluggish in pace, andfurther hampered by a final third that is nonsensical and reliant toomuch on special effects. I missed the intimacy of the choreography ofthe action sequences as well, not sure whether it was lack of heart inthe performances or the moments of hackneyed editing there was, and thedirection shows signs of awkwardness. Perlman aside, the acting ispretty awful, and hurt even more by inconsistent accents. Nicolas Cageis especially wooden.Overall, it wasn't quite as bad as I'd heard, however to me it wasstill one of the weakest of a very hit-and-miss year. 3/10 Bethany Cox

Nicholas Cage is a take-him-as-he-is type of actor, that's no secret.Love him or hate him, you know what you're getting when you watch hisfilms. Season of the Witch is essentially no different from Cage'susual fare in that it's a fairly straightforward "popcorn flick" typeof movie. It shouldn't come as a surprise that the film lacks any depth, butunfortunately the action scenes are severely lacking as well. Thevisuals would be impressive if anything new was offered, but instead weget typical scenes like "group fights pack of wolves" and "group triesto cross a decrepit bridge." There are no shocks, no surprises, and theone "twist" the movie offers barely has any impact whatsoever.Another big complaint I had was that the whole "witch" aspect of themovie was totally underplayed. The first scene plays on this a littlebit but the rest of the film never really goes anywhere. "Season of theLame Wisecracks" is probably a more fitting title. The movie is boring at best. It offers nothing new, and there aren'teven enough "bad" moments in the film to make it a half-entertaining Bmovie. Pass.

I am very surprised to see "Edremit Bay" and Smyrna (Izmir) as a desertfirst of all. There was no need to go and see those places to realize that, they arequite different natures than Sahara..Smyrna Battle: The soldier costumes/uniforms of Aydinogullari (Smyrnawas this Turkish seigniors's territory on 1344) was totally differentthan movie. The true story occurred like this: The crusader ships (St Jean Knightsfrom Rodos) came to Smyrna and they burned Turkish ships and shipyards. They did ashore and took harbor of city. But they couldn't took thecastle. This castle remained under Turkish rule and the harbor remainedunder St Jean knights rule 59 years after 1344.The city continued as two segmented, during next 59 years till Mongolinvade came there.

I bought the DVD in a local market about a week ago (19 March 2011 -Asia) and finally got a chance to watch it.I was fascinated... The sword play is quite good, the story isimprobable, but fit with the times. Guys in war make strong friends andjoke about death, so that seemed realistic.Nicholas Cage seemed interested in the girl's plight and saddened byhis past experiences. Through much of the movie we are kept guessingwho is on the side of good or evil... Plus there were a fewunanticipated twists. The CGI in a dark old abbey was very convincing and the adversaryfamiliar...

From the trailer this movie didn't seem like it's going to be anythingspecial, but it seemed like stupid fun. First scene that takes place isin 1235 A.D. and started off a bit lame and should not be takenseriously at all. But I had hopes that it would at least be stupid funand for the most part it was only half right. Than the movieflash-forward to 1332 A.D with crusaders in the 14th century but thetwo main character are Nicholas Cage and Ron Perlman. Anyways thesecrusaders look super hypocritical in this constantly getting drunk withwomen. Than go off killing more people in a brutal manner, now I don'tknow if crusades worked that way but it just seemed like the creator ofthis movie really don't like Christians. Anyways after a bunch ofkillings Nicholas Cage's character realize this is going the wrongdirection. Which I found to be humorous how it lead to that scenarioafter the beginning few minutes of him drinking laughing and killing.Nicholas Cage doesn't seem to take acting or even himself seriouslyanymore, especially in this. His acting and actions are just laughableliterally. This is a B-movie at best from Nicholas Cage and I don'tknow if some seems was intentionally suppose to be funny but it didn'tseem like it, and yet it's funny. I didn't know this was suppose to bea comedy, from the trailer it isn't suppose to be one but sometimes itdoes seem like it. Well at least it's a fast paced movie that is closeto a hour and 30 minutes. I don't know if it's because Nicholas Cagedon't care much about his acting career or something, cause I have noidea how they convinced him to take this role. Maybe it was just themoney issue. There is nothing much in the story either, the two maincharacters and a group of other are on a mission to transport a girlwho is persecuted for being a witch or from just a intuition of being awitch, from point A to point B. Just watch "Black Death" which is adifferent story but similar premise and is a better movie.3.8/10

2 1\2 stars is being very kind so director Dominic Sena can thank NicCage for that! Nic Cage to me is one of the or maybe the hardest actorson the planet today. I mean what does this guys usually put out 2-3 peryear? Well this is why i cut him more slack then any of the otherscause with that many projects on the go they all cant be winners.Season Of The Witch wasn't. If you don't mind b rated entertainment andalso enjoyed such 'dead zone' TV time shows such as Hercules, or evenXena the warrior princess which aired on Saturday afternoons, youshould be OK with this as i was. Sure it was cheesy, sure the beginninghyped up a more cooler look on the period and witches but ended upfalling flat however lower your expectations and ull be more happierabout it. In this Cage plays Behmen and Ron Perlman plays Felson two14th century soldiers of god who have fought through war after waragainst darken foes all in the name of Christianity. After the churchleads them into a fight where they are to destroy women and childrenthey leave the army and return home only to find that their homelandhas been desecrated by the black plague. After being detained by theirown authorities for deserting they make a deal with the head bishop ofthe church in exchange for their freedom to escort a witch to a remoteabbey where they assure the monks present there will be able tosacrifice the witch which in turn will result in the end of the plagueonly after arriving they find out their enemy is bigger then a measlywitch. Like i said not bad if you don't have high expectations ofstoryline and f/x.

This movie was actually better than what the trailers make it look to be. Two men who were knights of an army dedicated to fighting for God were given the option of transporting a "witch" to a temple to dispose of her powers, ending the supposed curse that was spreading throughout the land. Now, story wise, it was good. Although there were times when it was slow, it did redeem itself. The end was something nobody suspected. Honestly, it caught me off guard. The acting was moderate, good to say the least. I am not a fan of Nicholas Cage for his previous performance in "Ghost Rider", but in Season of the Witch he did a great job. So did the other actors in the film. The actress playing the "witch" did great, convincing the audience at the beginning that she was an innocent girl accused of witch craft. The direction was fair. Easy to follow. Although one question remained to me as I walked out of the movie. What happened to the witch at the beginning of the movie? Visuals were also fair. The story didn't demand extreme graphics or anything like "Tron" or "The Last Airbender" so what they did was fine. Overall, I do recommend this movie to those who were actually excited about this movie. To those who thought "Hm, looks interesting. I might see it", rent it.
