The Burlesque Lounge has its best days behind it. Tess, a retired dancer and owner of the venue, struggles to keep the aging theater alive, facing all kinds of financial and artistic challenges. With the Lounges troupe members becoming increasingly distracted by personal problems and a threat coming from a wealthy businessmans quest to buy the spot from Tess, the good fortune seems to have abandoned the club altogether. Meanwhile, the life of Ali, a small-town girl from Iowa, is about to change dramatically. Hired by Tess as a waitress at the Lounge, Ali escapes a hollow past and quickly falls in love with the art of burlesque. Backed by newfound friends amongst the theaters crew, she manages to fulfill her dreams of being on stage herself. Things take a dramatic turn though when Alis big voice makes her become the main attraction of the revue.

I watched this the other day and all I can say is it was amazing! The movie tells the story of Alice Marilyn "Ali" Rose (played by Christina Aguilera), a small town girl from Iowa, who dreams of a better life as a singer in Los Angles. After getting settled in she hits the town and finds the club know as Burlesque. She enters the club as the co-owner of the club named Tess (played by Cher) sings the clubs theme song "Welcome to Burlesque". As Alice watches Tess perform she realizes this the hope she'd been looking for. While at the bar Alice meets and makes friends with the bartender, Jack (played by Cam Gigandet), whom she assumes to be gay due to his outward appearance, who tells her to let Tess know he sent her, so as she goes to pursue this, Tess and her long-time friend, Sean (played by Stanley Tucci) shoot her down and she begins to wait tables, without anyone but Jack's knowledge until Tess catches her and to Alice's luck Jack comes to her rescue claiming he hired her, but Tess knows better but allows it anyway with a warning to "never pull that again". soon after she starts going under the name Ali. As time goes by Ali watches the dancers and memorizing their routines in her mind. She soon starts to try and press her opinions on Tess to help raise money for the club by allowing the girl dancers to sing live instead of lip-syncing since the audience has seen the acts and the girls do it several times and the routine is running old but Tess stubborn as she is refuses to listen and has Ali brushed back to wait tables. Not too long after that Ali returns home to find her home broken into, with no where to go or anyone one else to turn to she runs to Jack, who allows her to stay with him until she can find a new place. The next day Ali finds out that Jack is he's not gay, but that he's also engaged and tries to leave but Jack won't let her cause the weather is horrible. The story goes on pretty much the same with the exception that I forgot to mention that Tess' ex-husband, Vincent (played by Peter Gallagher), who is the other co-owner of Burlesque is trying to get Tess' half of the money for the club but soon gives up and starts trying to convince her to sale let them sell to Marcus (played by Eric Dane), a greedy and money hungry man who will do what every he can to get what he wants. In the end its Ali, who eventually ends up a dancer, who saves Burlesque twice, once by singing live due to Nikki (played by Kristen Bell) tries to sabotage her cause Tess sent her home early do to her being drunk and sent Ali out in her place and once again towards the end of the film. These musical sequences are featured in the film:# "Something's Got a Hold on Me (Christina Aguilera)" - Ali# "Welcome to Burlesque (instrumental)" - The Burlesque Lounge Girls# "Welcome to Burlesque (Cher)" - Tess and the Burlesque Lounge Girls# "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend (Marilyn Monroe & Jane Russel)" - Nikki, Georgia and the Burlesque Lounge Girls# "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend (outro by Christina Aguilera)" - Ali# "Long John Blues (Megan Mullally)" - Nikki# "Wagon Wheel Watusi (Elmer Bernstein)" - Ali# "Ray of Light (Madonna)" - Ali and the Burlesque Lounge Girls# "Tough Lover (Etta James)" - Ali and two Burlesque Lounge Girls# "Tough Lover (Christina Aguilera)" - Ali and two Burlesque Lounge Girls# "But I Am a Good Girl (Christina Aguilera)" - Ali# "Guy What Takes His Time (Christina Aguilera)" - Ali# "Express (Christina Aguilera)" - Ali and the Burlesque Lounge Girls# "Jungle Berlin (instrumental)" - Alexis and the contorsionists# "You Haven't Seen the Last of Me (Cher)" - Tess# "Bound To You (Christina Aguilera)" - Ali# "Show Me How You Burlesque (Christina Aguilera)" - Ali and the Burlesque Lounge DancersThis movie is great and a must have if you are a fan of Cher's or Christina Aguilera's or even musicals in general. You won't be disappointed. Guess the song is true too by the way, "we haven't seen the last of Cher" lol.

At least that's what I thought; I love the fact that they wear fishnetsand stockings all through out the film fact that they are very pretty. The plot was basic I could tell you have every scene played out beforeit happened. I love Cher and Christina, but the movie kind of draggedon and so many musical numbers. The acting by Christina is OK, Cher Iwould say is better in my opinion. Not a guy movie at all, some lightjokes, and basic dialogue but overall, the dancing and the singing wasgreat, the rest of the movie like the plot and actors were par. thefunniest and best actor in there was Cher's assistant. My two cents

Enough already about originality of the story line. Small town girl with BIG talent has to prove herself and overcome skeptics and adversaries to finally achieve success. No real spoilers here! Certainly you are not here to see Christina fail! And Burlesque handles this story well, with some great supporting actors who bring plenty of drama, charm and personality to amuse us. I have seen countless movie musicals from the days of Busby Berkley, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, Bing Crosby, and Gene Kelly. Its really all about the songs, music and dance!!! This is a vehicle that showcases the amazing talents of Christina Aguilera, and shows us Cher at 64 has still got what made her famous too! Cher and Christina have BOTH been nominated for "Best Song" Golden Globe awards from Burlesque, and both deserve it. In addition, if there is any Oscar Buzz it should go to the stage designers, lighting engineers and cinematographers that made every frame of this incredible film a work of art. They have set a landmark for stage lighting. Not that it needs it, but this film could have been pretty amazing in 3-D too. I want to see more live action 3-D in something besides Cartoons and Sci-Fi. On another note, I do hope this will inspire someone to actually make a feature film about the history of real burlesque, or a showcase of today's modern burlesque...this was not it, and I did not expect it to be. Enjoy Burlesque for everything it is, an amazing showcase of talent!

This rags-to-sequins tale may be schmaltzy in its sincerity, but 'tis the season. Glitter is optional, but certainly encouraged.

This review is from: Burlesque (DVD) The movie itself came in great shape. Cover still on. Only negative bit was that there was a small scratch on the holder. Other than that, good buy!

Aguilera is multi talented - she can belt it out in different stylesand act as well. The dance and song numbers are over the top and wellchoreographed. The camera angles were good - didn't jump around muchlike some of the recent musicals like Chicago. The supporting cast is top notch. Cher is a bit facially frozen but sheis amusing to watch. Kristin Bell is a surprise here - who knew she hadthe vamp in her. Tucci and Gallagher are good. Eric Dane is just sleazyenough. Cam Gigandet is a cool boyfriend.Loved the old fashioned feel good storyline and neat plot. The romanceis lighthearted and predictable in a good way. No ugly characters andunnecessary angst. The dialog is quite fun and witty throughout. It waslike watching a good Broadway musical but with a more attractive cast. One of the more enjoyable musical movies of the past few years.

The film itself is AMAZING. But I took away a star because of the special features. When I buy a DVD, I look at the special features first to see if it's worth buying. The special features look so good on the box that I bought it right away. But sadly, I was mistaken.SPECIAL FEATURES-6 Exclusive Song PerformancesI thought this meant NEW performances that didn't appear in the film. But sadly, that just meant performances of "Something's Got A Hold On Me (Dancers Version)" (which is just the instrumental opening number), Kristen Bell's uncut performance of "Long John Blues", uncut performances of "Express" and "A Guy What Takes His Time", the Alan Cumming number "That's Life" and another number. The "uncut" performances were fine the way they were in the film, I didn't need them "uncut", I would've preferred NEW performances-Alternate OpeningWhere Christina Aguilera performs "Something's Got A Hold On Me" right when the movie starts without interruptions and then the film takes on from there, with her counting the tips on the bar with the other lady-Blooper ReelNothing much I can say besides it's pretty funny. I always like gag reels haha-Director's CommentaryNot really into commentary, but I'll watch it with that...soon..LANGUAGES-English, English Audio Description-English, English SDH, French and Spanish subtitlesOverall I can forgive the movie for it's lack of special featuures because the movie itself is SOO amazing.

Burlesque is unlikely to convert any new followers to either its stars or its subject matter.

Cher gets first billing, for her status in the industry, but the storyis built around Aguilera's character, Ali (short for Alice), a smalltown Iowa girl working in a greasy spoon and getting bored very fast.Fed up with the hole she appears to be in she takes what she can scrapeup and heads to Los Angeles. When there she does the usual search in the classifieds, trying to finda job, when she happens upon the nightspot called "Burlesque", run byCher as Tess. They are not hiring so she picks up a tray and startswaiting tables, without an invitation. She eventually gets a chance toshow what she can do, which especially is powerful singing, and thisforces Tess to reevaluate how she runs her show. For a singer, I suppose inexperienced as an actress, Aguilera does afine, believable job as Ali. Cher is of course fine, but the real actoramong the cast is Stanley Tucci as Sean, gay jack of all backstagetrades and Tess's right hand man. Eric Dane is fine as the bartender, songwriter, Marcus who also gives Ali a place to stay, destined tobecome Ali's love interest. Dianna Agron is Natalie, the absent fiancéeof Marcus, and we only see her once when she returns to find Ali in herplace. which is a loss for the movie, as Agron is very good. The story isn't particularly novel or deep, but it is fun watching theactors and see how the story unfolds. Anyone who enjoys musicals shouldenjoy this one. My wife and I enjoyed, a DVD from our public library.

Despite the predictable premise, the cliché overall storyline and it'ssometimes painfully stiff out of place dialogue, this movie is aabsolute JOY to watch! The writing could have been better, I will giveyou critics that, but the music, dancing, set design, costumes, atmosphere and pretty much everything else that the filmmakers wereactually FOCUSING on is just top notch! I have read a lot of negativereviews that mostly take aim at the storyline and writing but Imtelling you, that was not why they made this movie. This movie was madeto showcase great music, dancing and everything I mentioned above, notfor award winning writing or acting.Christina Aguilera does a fine job with the acting and superb job withher vocal and dance performances, Cher is great in her music numbersbut her acting was a little bit stiff, Stanley Tucci delivers welldespite the fact his role was extremely cliché, but my favouriteperformance by far, was by Alan Cumming, he is HILARIOUS in this! Buthis role was way to small, perhaps 10 minutes of screen time in total, but totally worth watching! Overall, if you like a great dance musicalnumber with a happy ending, this is for you!

While campy and clichéd, this is a surprisingly enjoyable piece of escapism with Christina Aguilera delivering an impressive turn in the lead role.

This review is from: Burlesque (DVD) .Saw this 10+ times in the theater. Cher looks fab ! ! ! She and Christina are awesome performers.Movie moves very well with 1-2 slow spots. Fun without being too cheesy. Musical performances are excellent ! Quality costuming and sets. Engaging to watch without the excessive nudity/violence that other shows seem to think we need. I still watch it at least once a week.
Cynthia Fuchs 30 April 2012
Certainly, Cher doesn't need to sell herself: she's Cher, mesmerizingly fabricated, never finished. The movie doesn't seem to quite get that.

Intentionally or not, it might be the comedy of the year.

I saw this film last night. The story line was effectively crap, seenit done a thousand times over and over, small town girl makes it big inlarge city *rolls eyes*. Small town girl is tempted by Daddy Big Bucks.Small town girl saves the day.Dance numbers and soundtrack were great.Cher's performance was great. Christina's performance was around a3/10. Her strength and talent lay only in dance and song - not acting. She got marginally better as the movie progressed, but altogether, quite irritating.Stanley Tucci is always a great watch. Brilliant actor, with goodcomedic relief. He is unstoppable all supporting roles, Burlesque beingno exception.

Burlesque may have started out as a dazzling, lip-sync singing Frenchtwist sensation but when a talented girl from a small town takes centerstage belching out loud piercing notes screaming with soul, "You knowsomething got a hold of you and won't let go."The director starts out with scenes in dingy, crusty locations, overshadowed with filtered sunlight to create an outdated, old fashionlook. These scenes failed to capture a unique cinematic vision, insteadthe views were dark and dull. His blend of melodrama and music workedbetter than Chicago because singing was sung only on stage. No phantomof the opera to bring tears, just a busting out movie that wentstraight to the point--I want to sing!Ms small town girl named Ali, played by Christina Aguilera, changedcities but couldn't quite change her waitress uniform. She worked herway to that familiar job, when charmed by neon lights, she opened thedoor to a new world, Welcome to Burlesque. As she looked around, shewatched the bickering and cat fights among the dancers and howshamefully patrons weren't getting their drinks. So, she took charge bybefriending Jack the bartender played by Cam Gigandet, then moved fromthe unemployment line to waiting on tables and serving drinks. Tess, the club owner played by Cher, told her she has great enthusiasm andterrible timing. However, in the midst of all this tension whiplash,Tess told Ali to take off her coat and get to work.Ali studied hard by reading every burlesque book ever written. Shedemonstrated a fierce determination that she could do every dance, every scene, step by step better than the other girls at the audition .She was impressive and landed the job. Now here's the catch 22, peoplepay to see the dancers lip sync to the great stars like MarilynMonroe's "Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend." There is no live singingat Burlesque. What is a girl to do with all that vocal talent? Well, she could be lucky to have a vengeful enemy like Nikki who turns offthe pre-recorded music during her lip sync stage performance. Surelyfor Nikki that has to be the biggest mistake, huge mistake, right?Right. So the rest, as they say, is history! Tess rewrites the wholeshow around Ali's voice and the small town girl is now center stage onHollywood Sunset Stripe.Cher's performance was better than great, it was awesome. She deliversa warm touchy feeling convincing me she owned the club, she loved theclub and she wasn't selling her club. Hard set and beautiful, standingtall and confident, singing " You Haven't Seen the Last of Me;" Cher isa true goddess, definitive of stage and production. I needed to seemore and more of her . You can't get enough of Cher and her makeup, herhair and her famous, I know everything attitude.Christina is the sweetest part of the movie. She worked Burlesque fromthe beginning to the end with an Eminem's 8 mile state of mind, youonly get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow. Without a doubt, she definitely lost herself in the music, the moment, and the dancing. When you know you got it, you go get it. She wore skimpy culturedpearls, juicy bareback couture glittering with diamonds, and holdingostrich feathers only, as she paraded the stage singing slow songs, oldsongs and hip hop songs. Her roommate Jack, black eyeliner by night, isthe movie's secret eye candy. Well built, nice teeth, and shy, he givesus a little touch of burlesque with his steamy and lusty private moves. And of course we need to mention Sean played by Stanley Tucci. He heldthe movie together or should I say he held Tess together.Burlesque is an eye-popping never boring cinematic experience that willentertain you with grandeur songs from the present and the past. As youexperience this razzle dazzle movie, you can actually feel the music. To me, Burlesque mirrors Purple Rain's electrifying energy thatgenerated from a club of talented, struggling performers and a sidekicklove affair. Christina and Cher in Burlesque will be remembered likePrince in Purple Rain. You have to see it again and again, because truetalent never ages, its ageless. I just loved every mind- blowingperformance and I'm sure you will too, so GO see it!!

Oh brother, thank God I didn't spend money to see this miserable excusefor a film. Where does one begin? Okay, Cher! I was in college in 1965when Sonny & Cher hit it big and the ole girl is still pumping em out -but my God she looks younger now then she did 45 years ago - in factCher has had so much plastic surgery that her face is like a maskincapable of any kind of normal human expression - yikes - bizarre tosay the least! I'm sure she looks great on the stage but on film, noway Jose! Please Cher no more movies! Your time has past big time! There is a really cute scene where two guys get together and one can'tremember the name of the other and Eric Dane is a always fun to look atbut the story is so lame, so old, so utterly lifeless and humorlessthat one yearns for anything to break the pall that hovers over thestory like a death watch.

Obvious story of beautiful talented singer Ali (Christina Aguilera)moving from Iowa to Los Angeles to find fame and fortune. She (almostimmediately) finds a job as a bartender in a bar called BerlesqueLounge run by Tess (Cher). She quickly becomes a top singer in the barand is romanced by hot hunky roommate Jack (Cam Gigandet) and richMarcus (Eric Dane). Totally obvious complications follow. It leads toan ending with EVERYBODY happy--and had me smirking at the screen:)OK--this is a terrible movie--there's no two ways about it. The plot isridiculously obvious and topped by truly horrendous dialogue. There'salso incredible leaps of logic--Jack is as bartender but then we seehim playing piano in the band. He can do both at once??? Also Ali'srise to fame is ridiculously fast. The acting is terrible. Gigandet isa good actor--but you'd never know it from this. However the guy hasNOTHING to work with. His brief nude scene is nice though:) Aguileracan sing and dance--but can't act. Some of her attempts at acting wereembarrassing. Cher seems unable to move a muscle in her face. I loveher but she's had TOO many face lifts! Alan Cumming,Peter Gallagher andhunky Eric Dane were shamefully underused in small roles. On the up side--the singing and dancing (and there was a LOT of both)were great! The songs were good and the dancers (male and female) weregood-looking and full of energy. The last number is a true showstopper. Stanley Tucci is GREAT as the gay club manager. He easilythrows off one liners in a hilarious manner. And also Gigandet isridiculously attractive (and blows equally hot Dane off the screen). And, best of all, the dance numbers weren't edited by somebody who isADD addicted. The camera actually stands still a few times and you canSEE the dances.So--is it good? No...but I had a fun time watching it. The singing anddancing WAS incredible. I give it a 7 for that alone...and Gigandet:)

I wouldn't consider myself a fan of musicals. I found Burlesque to bevery entertaining. Christina Aguilera was excellent as was the rest ofthe cast. The story moved along so you didn't feel like it was songafter song like most made for the theater musicals. . I don't think Ihave enjoyed a movie as much as Burlesque in a long time. The crowdoften would applaud or hoot after each number. And surprisingly, therewere tons of LOL moments. If you have the slightest thoughts that you might like this movie, takea chance with this one. Burlesque was worth the full admission andoutrageous prices at the snack counter.

This review is from: Burlesque (DVD) I loved this movie! I saw this at the cinema then bought it. I thought that Cher was brilliant in this and how good was Christina her voice is so beautiful. I really loved all the costumes and the dance routines were great. Stanley Tucci was also very good and worked well with Cher. I recommend this movie to all people who love musicals great singing, dancing and acting by all.
