A bad film in almost every sense.

The potential was there. Director Michel Gondry was the genius who madeEternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Seth Rogen is one of thefunniest comedic actors of the last five years and this is the firstmovie for Christoph Waltz since his Oscar winning turn in InglouriousBasterds. Even Cameron Diaz still has a bit to offer and the trailershowed Jay Chou as a suitable replacement for Bruce Lee. So what in thename of decent filmmaking went wrong? Rogen, who was also on writingduties with regular collaborator Evan Goldberg, said in interviews thathis goal was to combine the best elements of the comedies he'srecognised for with the trademarks of your everyday big-budgetedblockbuster. An A+ for effort perhaps – as he put a lot of time, moneyand effort into it, including mercilessly standing up for the projecteven when it was copping bad press during re-shoots and a very slowpost production – but I would be hard pressed giving the end result aD. Unfortunately for man-child Rogen the humour and action clash ratherthan merge; his usual shlumpy wittiness at odds with the attemptedbone-crunching action. It's not just the inaccurate stab at the genre mish-mash that goes awrymind. Rogen and Goldberg focus so heavily on the Reid / Katorelationship that the other characters are pushed to the peripheral.Diaz's role as Reid's smart and sassy secretary is underdeveloped somuch it's hard to fathom why she would've considered this part in thefirst place. Meanwhile Waltz's dastardly scoundrel is not onlyone-dimensional but also extremely lame. I appreciate the 'bonkers'angle they were going for with Chudnofsky – and in a different moviewith a much more expanded back story it might've worked – however itjust falls flat here, even with the Oscar winner's natural likabilityas a quirky bad guy.The first in a trio of unexpected directors to tackle the superherosubgenre – with Kenneth Branagh's Thor and Darren Aronofsky's X-MenFirst Class still to come – Gondry has misfired every step of the way.His quirkiness is always present but it's never welcome. With thetendency of action flicks to take a darker, sterner route lately, it'srefreshing to find filmmakers willing to buck the trend; however TheGreen Hornet represents a story that is begging to be taken seriously, something the French director only considers as an afterthought. Plainand simple, Gondry was the wrong choice to helm this movie, a fact thathopefully doesn't hold any omens over the upcoming Thor and X-Menfilms.Simply put, The Green Hornet is a bad film in almost every sense, withJay Chou's entertaining Kato the sole reason this escapes the lowestrating.1.5 out of 5 (1 - Rubbish, 2 - Fine, 3 - Good, 4 - Great, 5 -Brilliant)

I can't believe they wasted the time, effort and $ to make this *&%!

Sat down to watch with my 10 year old son, with much anticipation and Iwas immediately horrified by the unnecessary amount of cursing. I'm noprude and I've cursed in front of my son before, but the gratuitousamount of swearing is an indication of the genuine lack of qualitydialog.Way over the top silliness, which I wasn't expecting, having grown upwatching the actual Green Hornet TV series. This is a film by Seth Rogan, about Seth Rogan for the collectiveamusement of the Seth Rogan self admiration society.Save your money, don't go to the show.

Seth Rogen Is Odd Casting Choice

In "The Green Hornet," Britt Reid (Seth Rogen), the son of metropolitan newspaper publisher James Reid (Tom Wilkinson), spends his days carousing, throwing wild parties, drinking to excess, and passing out, much to the chagrin of his father. When his father unexpectedly dies, Britt is thrust into his father's job -- a job he's unqualified for and doesn't take seriously. To strike back at a father who may have been the toast of the city but was a cold, distant dad, Britt enlists the assistance of his father's automobile mechanic, Kato (Jay Chou), in some local vandalism. Security cameras pick up their grainy images but the newspaper staff assumes the perpetrators are members of a gang. Britt orders his staff to write about the unidentified culprit and give him a snappy name that will sell papers. They call him "The Green Hornet." Up until this point, the film isn't bad, and it promises some interesting dramatic moments balanced with action. But director Michel Gondry goes the route of camp in gagging up every situation that follows, with Rogen's mugging and terrible acting undermining any attempt at a decent picture.Rogen is a limited actor who has become identified with man-boy social-misfit roles. In that capacity he's fine and has developed a fan base. But he is clearly not action hero material. He goes through the motions, recites the lines, and tries to look determined, but we never once believe his character as a serious threat to the bad guys. His Green Hornet is a human cartoon doing everything but running off a cliff and remaining suspended in midair as he looks helplessly toward the camera.Chou's Kato comes off as interesting, but he can't sell the comedic side of his role. It appears he has all he can handle to deliver his dialogue in English. There's no irony, no timing, and no sense of humor in lines meant to elicit chuckles. In the action department, Chou is more effective showing off Kato's lightning-fast karate moves and proficiency at building amazing gadgets and equipping cars with gimmicky weaponry.Satisfying the unwritten rule of action movies that in stature the bad guy must equal or even surpass that of the hero, Christoph Waltz plays Chudnofsky, the deadly crime king of the city. In an opening scene that borrows the menace of Waltz's Nazi officer from "Inglourious Basterds," Chudnofsky shows that despite his mild-mannered appearance and soft-spoken voice, he is a formidable villain. Equipped with a dual-barreled pistol, he is adept at knocking off upstart criminals, including James Franco in an unbilled cameo role, who threaten to muscle in on his turf. Cameron Diaz plays a secretary hired by Britt shortly after he takes over at the newspaper. Modeled on girl-Friday Pepper Potts in the "Iron Man" films, Diaz' Lenore Case has little to do that is significant to the plot and is present primarily for attractive window dressing in this testosterone-driven flick. There are some good action sequences in "The Green Hornet," including one involving several cement mixers, excitingly staged car chases, and an improbable scene in which a severed car continues its rampage through an office building.Humor is a tricky element in an action picture. It has to be incorporated in measured doses to be effective. The original "Superman" movie got it right, charming the viewer with gentle comedy without turning its superhero into the object of jokes. "The Green Hornet" looks as if a group of drunk, rich fraternity brothers put it together, assuming their sophomoric approach was hugely entertaining. When Hollywood throws its money into an ill-conceived project like this, it can only result in a dud. "The Green Hornet" is rated PG-13 for violent mayhem and strong language.

One Heck of a FUN Ride! Highly Recommended!!!!

First off, I want to note two things: first, that I am a fan of the '66Green Hornet TV show and second, I have never seen one of Seth Rogan'sfilms in the theater. I've seen parts of "40 Year Old Virgin" and"Pineapple Express" on cable, but that's the extent of delving into theRogan oeuvre. The first notation above is why I wanted to see "The Green Hornet"movie. As a fan of the old show (and the character) I have to say thatI was really impressed with the love that this movie showed the Hornet. From an homage to the "outlaw" Hornet mask of the '40's (worn by theHornet in his first bumbling outing in this movie) to an exactreproduction of the gas gun from the '66 series; the producers reallydid their homework. This movie was so much fun; a very focused, overarching concept heldtogether with detailed character interaction and excellent pacing. Iwas never bored, never confused, never wondering when a certain part ofthe movie would end. Instead, I found myself really on the edge of myseat waiting for the next development and this movie neverdisappointed.I've seen a lot of super-hero movies, but never one that has deals withthe concept of side-kicks like "The Green Hornet." Kato is his own man, really the driving force behind the Hornet, but the movie raises thequestion of how Kato deals with his portrayal by the general public, especially in the light of how the Hornet's fame changes Kato'srelationship with the Hornet.I don't have the time or the space to get into everything I enjoyedabout this almost two hour thrill-ride, but I would recommend it toANYONE who loved "Iron-Man" or the first two "Spider-Man" movies. SOmuch fun and I can only hope that there will be a sequel in fewyears!!!!!!

RIP Green Hornet

This review is from: The Green Hornet (Amazon Instant Video) While the Green Hornet might have made it out alive by the skin of his teeth in this movie...in this viewer's world he died a horrible lingering death. The Green Hornet could have been an awesome movie if the characters had been given some respect. This was suppose to be a movie about a hero. Yet, not a single heroic action occurred in this film. Even Kato who was the highlight of this feature turned out to be no more than Rogen's glorified babysitter. And what the heck was Diaz doing in there?!!! The fact that they had an age reference for her "twilight" years just made it even worse. Loved the car, the costumes, and Kato - other than that this movie packs about as many bombs as the car itself!

Bad, Bad, Bad and bad again!

If I could give this move .5 of a star I would have! Sorry to thosethat worked on this movie but it has be one of the worst Superheromovies ever. Especially being a buddy movie as well, and in this moviethe partner out shone the lead Character played by Seth Rogan. The guywho played Kato was far better. But fancy stealing that name from PinkPanther! As far Cameron Diaz's role, god it was lame, and totallyunnecessary, especially rogan's continuous obsession with her wasterrible. The plot lines were so lame, the baddie played by a goodactor was so bad, the scene in the scrap yard particularly cringeworthy. I actually fell asleep watching this and when I sat down towatch the rest I actually turned it off.Even the jokes were bad, the action was poor and fight scenes obviouslychoreographed to death.Avoid, avoid , avoid.

I liked it!

All of these reviews say how horrible the movie is, but I reallyenjoyed it. Keep in mind, though, that I never saw any of the TVshow/read the comics, and I also don't like super hero movies verymuch. I think that's the reason I did like this movie. He's acompletely new type of super hero to me. (Especially since his sidekickdoes most of the work.) I'm not usually a fan of Seth Rogen, but Ithought he played the part well. He and Kato have some really funnymoments. The villain has an insecurity about growing old and not beingscary anymore, and I thought he was pretty funny. I thought the actionscenes were cool and entertaining, I just don't know how great they arecompared to others. Biggest Low Point: Cameron Diaz, who I think is over-rated anyway. Hercharacter was dull, flat, and I thought kind of snotty. Biggest High Point: The chemistry between Britt and Kato. They becomeBFFs in a span of about 12 hours. Fun to witness. Overall, not terrible. I enjoyed it and would watch it again. Bonus!James Franco makes an appearance. :)

One of the dumbest movies ever made

Both the acting and script are so poor (not to mention juvenile in context) it's hard to imagine why the license holders of this property felt inclined to offer it to the verbally challenged Seth Rogen, who is as lost in the role of the Green Hornet as Elmer Fudd would be playing Dirty Harry. Incompetent, and unapologetic in it's utter stupidity, it's hard to imagine anyone enjoying this wasted effort.

The real shocker isthat the production team went as far as they did. A film bothrespectful to the traditional story line could have been done; whilestill integrating liberal doses of humor, all in the same screenplay.THIS WAS FAR from the case with Mr. Seth Rogan's project; which couldhave been a much better product, with just a little push in the rightdirection. Moderately entertaining

In a superhero movie, I expect a bit more action, less talking. Andit's not as if the speaking parts are all that deep. It's worth awatch, but just seems thin. It was more of a comedy, perhaps "campy",than I expected (or perhaps wanted).I think Ironman was similar with a "rich guy with cool gadgets turnssuperhero" theme but did it much better. Ironman treated the subjectsomewhat "seriously" in that it was almost a "what if this werepossible" feel and still managed to have a great deal of humor. TheGreen Hornet just seemed all over the place, never taking anything tooseriously. Even Kick-A** (mentioned in another review) seemed to havemore believable characters.I also agree with some of the other reviews that the wrecking of thepolice car just seemed too out of character.Kato was the highlight, and the special effects were good. Fun, butweak, movie.

bad movie

I got this movie on my evo 3d. After 30 mins of the movie, my attention withered. that 30 mins felt like a life time to me. It was excruciating to watch. I thought this movie was about superhero, but i was wrong. Seth's over acting killed it. The movie lacks of depth. It is dump, not that funny at all. It is not even close to comedy. Some scenes are a bit funny, but most of the time, it is just dragging.. weak humor. Also, the movie has many talents in it. Jay chou is a top chinese singer, song writer, he played Kato o.k. Diaz is a good actress, but why the hack she participated in this C- film???? argh, no wonder EVO 3d has it for free because the movie is cheep...

Popcorn movie for kids... nothing more.

This movie simply lacks everything. The acting is so bad that I can't find the words to describe it. Horrible might even be a compliment. I only watched this movie because of the more-than-brilliant CHRISTOPHER WALTZ who is one of the finest actors of all time. I've seen most of his german movies and I cannot think of the slightest reason why he signed up for this crap. Beats me totally.I actually fast forwarded most of the movie because it became unbearable to watch.

Not great for a Green hornet movie

I'd give this a 5 purely out of being a die hard comic fan. Anyone whois into comics and Bruce Lee will know that this was a highlyanticipated movie by many loyal fans. Rumors surfaced some years agoabout 2007 that Jet Li was gonna play Kato and they were looking for alead as Green hornet but that idea was scrapped later. But Seth turnedit into a bit of an early 70s kind of Batman TV show. I was surprisedthe screen didn't have POW! written when the fists & kicks connected.Seth seemed out of place in this movie and Jay chou not being a realmartial artist and extremely poor acting/language skills just killedthe movie. Jay has had an expressionless face since childhood and doesnot seem to be able to show hardly any emotion or charisma in any moviehe's made. Additionally he didn't come across as the cool ass kickingside kick he should have been. Mainland china has so many martialartists/actors who can act and fight such as Collin Chou or even JonFoo from UK who played Jin in the Tekken movie. Overall I was not veryimpressed with the movie but, it's worth watching if you love the oldTV show, Bruce Lee and comics.

Moderately Good!

In an effort to battle the exorbitant cost of 3D movies (especially the ones that undergo 3D conversion post-production), I went to the Sunday matinee showing of The Green Hornet. I don't know if that's really the optimal environment for a superhero movie, but I do know that I felt super awesome seeing a movie by myself in a theater lightly sprinkled with moms. What made me even more awesome was my flirtation with the cute ticket taker and cashier, only to have them realize that I was friendless at the movies and therefore genetically undesirable for the production of offspring. But hey, free parking downtown on Sundays! Which makes me wonder...how many of those moms were actually angry San Luis Obispo meter maids? As my stylish RealD glasses weighed down on my nose (which, by the end of the movie, was acting rather affronted), the previews drew to a close, and what followed was a moderately entertaining film. By no means a perfect creation, The Green Hornet lived up to its Buzz with charm enough to overcome the fact that it was little more than a souped-up, buddy-cop movie. While its generic overarching plot had a bit of originality Nested here and there, what really kept things aloft was Seth Rogen's light-hearted tone and performance. Britt Reid (Seth Rogen) and Kato (Jay Chou) were fun characters to watch and had pretty good chemistry. I believed their friendship, their obligatory fallout, and their eventual reconciliation, and I laughed out loud at lines like "Do some of that Ben Hur stuff!" Sadly, I was the only one who laughed during the entire movie. Man, those parking enforcement officers really don't have souls. As always, Cameron Diaz was totally useless. She is the Queen of inane, managing to evoke a sense of lifelessness in every role. She Bumbles through her character, Droning on and basically adding nothing. At least it was a new take on the love interest. She wasn't really interested, and neither was she interesting. In fact, I feel like she was almost more objectified this way. Rather than either of the main characters forming a connection with her, she simply served as a vehicle for Britt and Kato's argument. I guess that's what they get for trying to stick their Proboscises where they don't belong.Speaking of vehicles, the Black Beauty was one of the sweetest cars ever. The sheer number of weapons and gadgets made it the coolest thing since MIB's red button. What wasn't particularly sweet was the bad guy. In an attempt at humor, the villain constantly worried about his image and his hard-to-pronounce name, and he was right to. He just wasn't intimidating. I never felt the Sting of real fear or the sweet Nectar of joy at any point during the film. One of the more interesting stylistic choices comes partway through the movie when the villain puts a bounty on the Green Hornet's head. The shot then enters an ever-expanding split screen as word of the reward spreads through all the different circles of evil, from the Thorax of malcontent to the Mandibles of hate. Watching the sheer number of thugs on the screen grow as they receive their mission really does add a sense of dread to an otherwise threat-free story. More and more split-screens kept showing up until I was so overwhelmed that I couldn't keep track of them anymore. I waited for the repercussions of this onslaught, only to watch as the group of villains murdered a ton of innocent people wearing green and then never reappeared. And just like that, the sense of dread was gone. The Green Hornet was basically fun. It doesn't take itself too seriously, and there's some entertaining action and comedy. In no way does it surpass expectations, however, and many other films are better able to embrace the genre. If you've got some extra cash and a bunch of guys are sitting around bored, it might be worth checking this out, but otherwise you should probably just wait until it's on Netflix.2.5/5 StarsCouldn't work these in: Venom, Insect, Antennae, Hive, Apoidea, VespaFor more reviews, check out thenickelscreen on wordpress!

funny and entertaining

this film has received a lot of hate, but sometimes critics get itwrong, sure its a dumb movie, but damn its funny as hell. as anythingRogen is involved in it is filled with incredible comedic moments, andalso the action is pretty damn spectacular, there are always explosionsgoing off and pretty awesome karate action sequences. the story isn'teven that bad and pokes fun at some action movie clichés, for examplethe thing that gets the villain killed at the end is that in an attemptto become more scary and affective, he says a long speech just beforehe kills someone, thus giving the hero plenty of time to react. overall a very funny film, surprisingly well acted and just entertaining inwhole.

Utter Rubbish

This sad DVD found its way into my rubbish bin at about the 30 minutemark! Just when a good flick is going to reveal its class... or not..The movie lacked plot, direction and appeal at any level. The 'acting'was suitably appalling. Throwing a few stars $120 million and expectinga good product is not a reliable formula. Green Hornet demonstratesthis beautifully. With that much cash, one would expect something ofvalue, worthy of viewing. But NO! This one is not worth any more than2. Ms Diaz and Mr Rogen are associated with more of a classy outcome. Iam surprised they fell for such a humble storyline. They surely deserveto be associated with much better material. Sadly, this is a corny MUSTTO AVOID.

Very Disappointing

This review is from: The Green Hornet (Amazon Instant Video) I was incredibly disappointed with this movie. It seemed like every other word was an expletive, which is generally used when the script and story-line are incredibly weak. This movie was NOT worth renting. We nearly quit watching it in the middle of it. I was disappointed in the PG-13 rating for the language alone. Kato's gadgets were very neat, but I expected much more from this movie and I was left sorely disappointed. This is NOT an acceptable movie for children to watch, due to the language alone.

A hugely entertaining experience

The Green Hornet is one of the best superhero films I have seen in along time. It might not be perfect, but it kept me hugely entertainedthe whole time, and not only because of the evident funny elements fromthe screenplay, but also because of the irreverent intelligenceco-screenwriters Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg and director MichelGondry brought to this movie, which will undoubtedly be misunderstoodby many people. This is the interpretation I have about this film: The Green Hornet isa parody of the superheroes cinema, and at the same time, it is atribute which takes the clichés from the genre seriously. Or, bettersaid, it does not take them seriously, but it puts them into a contextin which they seem real. That context is an absurd comedy full ofimmature and narcissistic characters; the humor which comes from it isalmost accidental. What matters is that Gondry, Goldberg and Rogenunderstand that the teenage fantasies on which the superhero fantasiesare based on can only subsist into a comical environment, and they riskthemselves to follow that policy to the last consequences. For example,Batman Begins is an extraordinary movie, but it requires us to take aconsiderable leap of faith for us to accept the existence of amillionaire disguised as a bat. In The Green Hornet, we do not have totake a leap of faith, because when everything else is absurd, thecharacter naturally fits into the surrealistic environment. And thosewho have seen the previous movies directed by Gondry (Human Nature,Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Science of Sleep and BeKind, Rewind) will know that the surrealism is this filmmaker's naturalenvironment.Rogen's and Goldberg's work as screenwriters reminded me a little bitof Kevin Smith, because they seem to be so in love with theirmonologues and diatribes that they introduce long and repetitive scenesonly because they cannot stay silent, or because an additional jokewhich makes the spectator to smile came to their minds. That may notseem as a very convenient strategy, specially in an action movie...buton some way, that works very well in this movie, because after all, the"real" plot (in other words, the conflict between The Green Hornet andthe neurotic villain Chudnofsky -very well interpreted by ChristophWaltz-) is not the axis from the film. On the contrary, the mostimportant thing in this movie is the chemistry between The Green Hornetand his assistant Kato, as well as the relationship they develop witheach other during the movie. Someone who is also involved in thatequation is Cameron Diaz, because even though her character has arelatively short screen time (she takes half an hour more or less toappear in the movie, and she later tends to disappear for long periodsof time), her scenes are essential and very entertaining. I do not wantto reveal very much, but I liked the way in which Rogen and Goldbergmake her an integral part of the "heroic duet" without making her to bea simple damsel in danger or frivolous visual attraction. In conclusion, I had a fascinating time watching The Green Hornet, andI took a very pleasant surprise with it; I just think you need to findthe correct angle in order to enjoy it. And sure, I understand thereason why some people consider it to be an epic fail which betrayedthe potential from the character. But personally, I liked this movievery much.
