Becky (Rachel McAdams) is a hard-working morning TV show producer, or at least she was until she got fired. Desperate to get a job, she finally gets an interview with Jerry (Jeff Goldblum) - who is desperate to hire a producer for the struggling show Daybreak. Becky accepts the job and it proves to be more difficult than even she might be able to handle. She has to fire the sexist co-host, then try to convince egotistical news reporter, Mike Pomeroy (Harrison Ford), to take the job, and then try and get him to actually do the job, properly. And she has to do this while falling for handsome Adam (Patrick Wilson), and trying to save the show from plummeting ratings. Will Becky be able to hold on to her dream job and her sanity?

Needs a little more to "get those ratings up"

It was ok. A little on the boring side (about as boring as Daybreak News). A couple of good parts, but that's about it.

Richard Corliss 15 May 2012

[McAdams's] Adorability Quotient is off the charts. If being ingratiating is a crime, she'd be shot at sunrise. But this good nature doesn't seem forced.

Edward Douglas 10 May 2012

Morning Glory is one of those rare mainstream comedies that's far better than it should be. It's a fun crowd-pleasing movie indeed.

Your morning dump with Mike Pomeroy

Becky is a hard-working morning TV show producer, or at least she wasuntil she got fired.Desperate to get a job, she finally gets an interview for thestruggling show "Daybreak". Becky accepts the job and it proves to bemore difficult than even she might be able to handle. She has to fire the sexist co-host, then try to convince egotisticalnews reporter, Mike Pomeroy, to take the job, and then try and get himto actually do the job, properly. And she has to do this while falling for handsome Adam, and trying tosave the show from plummeting ratings.....Yes the film is from the writer of the devil wears prada, but don't letthat deter you, this is a completely different movie. It's refreshingbreezy, and most of all funny, in a happy way.McAdams is on top form here as the EP who is trying to save the show, and she wins over the staff quickly, but people still doubt her. Heronly problem is, Becky is obsessed with work, leaving little time forher personal life, so when the show gets threatened with the chop, it'sher whole life at stake.Enter one Harrison Ford, who steals the movie from an alreadyimpressive cast, as yes, the bitter man with the heart of gold. But thedifference from other movie grumps, is that Mike knows he is bitter, and does this because he can. We get a few glimpses of a human beingwith feelings, and when we see this, Ford really is a revaluation. It's schmaltzy at the end and predictable, but when a film is thisenjoyable, and funny, (the weather man challenges are laugh out loudfunny) you can forgive the predictability of it all. But with thesesort of movies, it's half the fun knowing that everything will turn outalright.See it for Ford, he is brilliant in this.

"Okay, the Jewish guy is crossing himself. So we're confident."

This review is from: Morning Glory (DVD) "Hi, someone wanna tell me why I had to log off BangingGranniesdotcom for this?" Iffy comments like that being bandied about by a morning talk show anchor, well, the guy's just begging to be fired. Rachel McAdams plays Becky Fuller, the young new executive producer of a perpetual cellar-dwelling morning talk show who must quickly whip her staff into shape and drive up the ratings, lest "new producer" promptly becomes "ex-producer." This morning program she finds herself employed in is so down in the dumps that even the doorknobs don't function. One of Becky's first and immediate hurdles is how she responds to this crude talk show host. She very publicly gives him his walking papers, and the staff is mildly impressed. What's the story, morning glory? What's the word, hummingbird? Things turn around, thanks to Becky's boundless energy and inventiveness, but mostly to her big get in the shape of Daybreak's new co-host, the legendary Pulitzer Prize winner (and unbelievably superior and condescending) Mike Pomeroy (a wonderfully acerbic Harrison Ford). Except that Pomeroy, an old school, serious news anchor, maintains that "news is a sacred temple" and he won't stoop to doing fluff pieces, which happen to be the lifeblood of morning talk shows. His diva ploy doesn't sit real well with his television partner, Colleen Peck (Diane Keaton) who herself massages a gynormous ego. Anyway, here come the mutual upstaging and combativeness and the frightful bicker, waged in excruciatingly polite tones. The pity of the thing is that Ford and Keaton aren't given enough scenes in which they exchange wicked banter.MORNING GLORY does feature a romantic comedy angle, but it's a weak, half-hearted effort, at best. While not as meaty, MORNING GLORY bears closer kinship with BROADCAST NEWS, a film which does have romantic elements but focuses more on the behind-the-scenes minutiae of putting together a television show. Wisely, the plot in MORNING GLORY hones in more closely on the trying working relationship between Becky Fuller and her demanding star Mike Pomeroy. That's not to say that Patrick Wilson, who plays the love interest, isn't funny and sensitive and quite the catch. But he's simply not as compelling as Harrison Ford, even if (or maybe because) Ford's character is widely regarded as "the third worst person in the world." Star power crushes the charming up-and-comer, and, really, the true emotional pull comes from McAdams' interactions with Ford. They've got this neat contentious mentor-student, almost father-daughter thing going on.I've seen Rachel McAdams in MEAN GIRLS and SLINGS & ARROWS and in RED EYE, and she's uniformly excelled in these different genres. One more time, in MORNING GLORY, she proves to be a first rate comedienne. She's such a pleasure to watch (and I don't mean that she's just pretty to ogle at). Her character here, relentlessly talky and unendingly klutzy, is a fairly cliched one. But, to me, it speaks of how talented she is that she's still able to turn something contrived into something endearing. And, yeah, I think it's endearing that her character's aggressive rambling and work obsessiveness are defensive coping mechanisms. She's just so watchable.MORNING GLORY doles out plenty of laughs, some stemming from the cast's sparkling (sometimes very caustic) dialogue, some from the crazy antics McAdams comes up with in her all out efforts to save her show from cancellation. And, oh, that weatherman, the mad s#!t he had to go thru, for ratings' sake. His ordeals made me laugh a lot, the poor bastard. In the end, it all works out. Daybreak achieves a ratings boost, stays on the air. Ford gets to break a hard-hitting story. Even the doorknobs get fixed.

Watch The Trailer...It's All You'll Need

When the trailer for "Morning Glory" first hit the airwaves, it looked like a fun little film. Rachel McAdams plays a spunky journalist, Harrison Ford lends his big-screen gravitas to the project, and the entire project is produced by JJ Abrams. Unfortunately, this is one of those cases in which the trailer shows all the best parts of the film. Beyond that, there really isn't much. For a basic plot summary, "Morning Glory" focuses on Becky Fuller (McAdams), a workaholic TV journalist who gets fired from her cushy position and thus takes a job at the lowest-rating morning news show on the air. In order to turn the show around, she reaches out to news anchor "legend" Mike Pomeroy (Ford), whose gruff exterior threatens to destroy the entire project. The trouble with this movie is that director Roger Michell never allows us to truly feel for the characters, as they are so cliched and one-dimensional. He tries to develop McAdams' go-getter character, but she's so over the top as to be almost laughable. Ford's character is almost a walking cliche of "hard news" grumpiness. Even the romantic angle that should (with a better script) tie the characters together instead falls flat and wastes many precious minutes. The one redeeming factor in "Morning Glory" is the performance by Harrison Ford. Though he seems to be an odd choice for the part, as his actual news anchor scenes are not convincing whatsoever, just his incredible acting talent in general carries the entire film on his shoulders. When he isn't on the screen, you'll be wishing he was, as that is when things are funny and interesting.Overall, I found this movie to be quite disappointing. It was almost as if Hollywood figured "Ford will bring in the men, McAdams the women, so why work too hard at making it really good?".

If Hollywood decides to do a remake of Grumpy Old Men in about 10 years, let me present you with the ideal candidate to fill one of the lead roles: Harrison Ford.

Lou Lumenick 29 April 2012

It includes more than a few clever lines, and boasts a stellar cast, including the underutilized Diane Keaton.

Andrew L. Urban 29 April 2012

Overacting is matched by plastic storytelling

David Stratton 28 April 2012

Rachel McAdams just seizes this film and goes with it and tends to leave everybody else in her wake a little bit because she's such a force -- such a potent force.

Unsurprising sitcom

Becky (Rachel McAdams) takes a beggars-can't-be-choosers job atdead-end breakfast show Daybreak. Ongoing anchor Diane Keaton is joinedby Harrison Ford, a TV journalist of immense experience and gravitas, whose glory days are behind him. Unfortunately he is a surly curmudgeonwhose ungracious attitude simply drives audience numbers even furtherdownwards. This is a fairly routine situation comedy, with nothing in particularto either recommend it or condemn it.Ford's curmudgeon gets fairly wearing fairly quickly although this isredeemed by a couple of moments of good, subtle acting. Keaton'scharacter is sympathetic and rounded. Patrick Wilson gets yet anotherthankless role as Becky's non-relevant boyfriend. McAdams' Becky is sorelentlessly perky that she becomes irritating, not to mentionunbelievable - no-one should be that cheerful and chirpy when sackingsomeone for what appears to be nothing more serious than narcissism andmaking a not-very-good pass at her after she's only been in the job forabout half an hour. On the other hand, it turns out that her buttocksare also perky, and this is not a bad thing. This is an adequate time passer.

Not my cup of tea

I agree with another reviewer that this movie started out boring and was almost too silly. I was looking for something on the scale of 27 Dresses. The story line was drawn out a bit.

Nick Nunziata 25 April 2012

Morning Glory is a juggernaut. It has one directive: make the audience fall in love with Rachel McAdams by all means necessary.

auroraterre-2 21 April 2012

Horrible!

I can't believe with all the money they can throw at a film that THISis the pitiful product. Everything about it is, really, quite terrible. The Sound Editor should be shot. The music is grating and rarely hasanything to do with the emotions of the scene, also, is so loud thatwhatever "sparkling" dialog is totally lost. Miscast -- Rachel McAdamsis annoying and should take voice lessons. Pretty though, in the AnneHathaway mode. (Harrison Ford is right, her bangs ARE annoying).Harrison Ford was surprisingly inadequate for this. He was mostlysullen, without comedic timing. (a few times was funny). Diane Keaton, who I have come to like in her middle age (when she is not jumping upand down and screeching, which seems to be the norm these days forfemale happiness/delight) did the best she could. Banal plot (which Idon't actually mind, but this was badly done) with no interestingsidekicks we care about, unlike "The Devil Wears Prada". I see this isthe same screen writer who was responsible for TDWP which is hard tobelieve because that movie I have watched several times and it is oneof those (mostly) flawless movies I watch with pleasure. Really -- youcan skip this.

Robert Levin 20 April 2012

The film offers an appealing lead performance from Rachel McAdams and an engaging rendering of the clashes and split-second decisions that complicate live broadcasts.

Brandon Fibbs 19 April 2012

Morning Glory is a breezy, delightful fall comedy that sparkles from start to finish, a fresh, welcome edition amidst the solemnity of the current Oscar bait season.

ltlacey 18 April 2012

An ambitious producer makes her mark on the world.

Now, I totally get the theme that some of us are married to our jobsand that the people at work are our family (sometimes because we havenothing and no one else), but in my opinion this movie did not do agood job of really portraying just what it means to put your job first. We got some inklings of it, but nothing solid. The movie starts outokay, but soon runs out of steam. I attribute this to a mostlylackluster script. The talent was there, for the most part, butunderutilized. And the movie tried to be too many things. For example,a rom-com and/or a dramedy. And like so many movies lately it was justanother in a long list of mediocrity. Want to make this movie work?Keep it as a serious drama and get rid of that non-plausible endingwhere she decided to stay at some low-level position over working for amajor network with a highly rated show. She just proved that she wasnot ambitious.

ok concept - thrown away by bad script

This review is from: Morning Glory (Amazon Instant Video) I felt like there were large parts of this script which seemed to have gotten stuck in the copy machine. I generally like Ms. McAdams, but this was not her role. In addition, the love story was a completely unbelievable laugher. Also - i might add that it has perhaps the worst soundtrack I have ever heard. Unimpressed.

Rainy day movie

A great little film for a rainy day. Fun storyline and if you are ahardworking person and find yourself being fired this film is for you. It's a great little pick you up type of movie, the best person for thejob gets fired and hired elsewhere and saves the day so to speak.Females you will enjoy this. The acting is great as are the top cast ofactors. Some really witty banter within the lines. Well written greatlittle storyline. A little different to most, I first thought it was aromantic comedy but its not about the romance more about how life canthrow you a curve ball and how to change your plan of attack. A reallynice little movie.
