Great music and pretty good family movie.

This was a pretty good family movie with some great Elton John music throughout the entire movie. Cute, funny and not too long with a great soundtrack.

Cute

My daughter is 2, my son is 5. We watched this with them last night. I would say my husband and I enjoyed it more than the kids. After the first hour the kids went about their own business and had completely lost interest. A lot of the dialogue and wit was more what adults would grasp than kids. eg illiterate vs illegitimate. While Gnomeo and Juliette are the main characters, I think the frog and little red gnomes steal the show. I can't see myself watching this repeatedly or my kids wanting to watch it again.

What a shame!

"Is his... big and pointy?" asked the frog. "A squirrel dropped hisnuts." said Juliet. The frog added "The nuts where the size ofboulders." How does this pass as entertainment for our children, I wasdisappointed to say the least - I guess these days pedophiles arewriting the family movies. Why did I say pedophile? Simply cause thedouble meaning jokes are too disgusting, but mostly cause the jokes area sick attempt to make todays children as perverted as the people whowrote Gnomeo and Juliet. If a pedophile was in your garden, talkingdirty to your child, you would ask him to leave. Without thebelow-the-belt jokes the movie would have been okay I suppose, althoughI'm not a big fan garden gnomes. Furthermore, Gnomeo and Juliet is apale copy of Toy Story, no where near as good.

Childish...

I've been wanting to watch this film ever since it came out intheaters, but never gotten a chance to. Now after I saw it on demand, Iwas thinking "Well... er... you know... this is not a kids movie".There are parts where it looked like Gnomeo was committing suicide butthen you actually found out it was just broken glass or something. The storyline looked like a 4-year-old written it and it's nothingspecial. It's a little run-down with a bit of 'lazy' animation and thehumour, well, it could make adults laugh a couple of times, but I thinkthat humour was placed in for more of the little kids and don't reallysell out anything for the older kids.I haven't saw Romeo and Juliet before, let alone a ballet, but thisfilm was well, sorta childish and really nothing special for the olderkids and even adults.

Worst Side Story

Gnomeo and Juliet (1:24, G, 3-D) — other: talking animals, 2nd string, formulaUnder one version of the Copenhagen interpretation of quantummechanics, things don't really exist if they're not being observed atthat particular moment. That's way deeper than this movie ever gets.Instead, it follows the tradition from the nutcracker story, parade ofthe wooden soldiers, and most recently Pixar's Toy Story films, in thatthe one absolute, overriding imperative of all inanimate objects isthat they must instantly freeze into their static forms whenever ahuman being is about to lay eyes on them. In between, when no one'slooking, they're free to cavort as they will. Here, loosely filed under "talking animals", the inanimate objects withthe secret lives are plaster garden gnomes, 2 households of them, theblues living at the Montague place, the reds next door at theCapulets'. (They live on Verona Drive, the blues at number 2B, the redsat 2B with the slashed-circle "do not" sign over it, so that's "to beor not to be" for those who can't tell the difference between Romeo,Juliet, and Hamlet. Similarly, later in the movie there's a movingtruck of the Rosencrans and Guildenstern line. Sigh.)Gnomeo, a blue, falls in love with Juliet, a red, but their clans arefeuding with each other. And, when you're made of plaster, feuds canlead to more than just the clink clink of little feet. This isparticularly true when the bravos on each team decide to rev up theirpower mowers and do a little dirt-trackin' in the nabors' garden. There are some B+ names in the voice cast — James McAvoy, Emily Blunt,Maggie Smith, Patrick Stewart, Jason Statham — but the animation lookscheap (often using either completely immobile scenery or just a plainpastel backdrop), and the story is ludicrous. There are over half adozen credited writers, and I'm tempted to say that too many cooksspoil the broth, but that implies some level of coordination amongthem. Instead, it looks like one of those sophomore-English writingassignments, where everybody gets to write a page of the story beforepassing it along to someone else (who may or may not care what's gonebefore) to write the next. What's supposed to pass for comic relief comes largely fromFeatherstone, a pink plastic lawn flamingo who's been in a storage shedfor the last 30 years, and an excitable but mute toadstool with aLassie complex. Never made me crack so little as a grin.I saw it in 3-D. Would I recommend it? Heck, I wouldn't recommend it inANY D.

Good movie for the kids

Gnomeo and Juliet is one of the first childrens' movies I have seen in a long time that I can honestly say is worry free. Its very clean and I can promise younger kids will love it. I even enjoyed it myself. The happy lawn gnomes and the beautiful scenery animation makes it a visually pleasing movie to watch. The storyline is basically this: There are 2 yards, one with blue gnomes and the other with red gnomes. They contantly fight and try to 1 up each other. Apparently they do put aside their differences enough to meet up in the alley and race their owner's lawn mowers (with cheating often involved) Juliet, who is a red gnome, goes on a mission to help better her garden. Gnomeo who is on the run from the reds after a stealth mission into their territory goes wrong, runs into Juliet and they both fall in love in an abandoned yard. They continue to see each other in this yard and even make friends with another lawn ornament who tells them he will keep their secret and becomes a good source of advice for the two. As the feud heats up, the situation becomes more dangerous for both yards of gnomes, climaxing with Benny (a blue gnome) buying a backhoe style-super tractor and wrecking both yards (in case you're wondering how a gnome bought a tractor...just watch lol) leaving them completely destroyed. And I will leave it at that :) Very fun movie, lots to keep the kids entertained and I think most adults that have a young mindset will enjoy watching it too. My only complaint is the storyline. Romeo and Juliet is portrayed constantly! I mean, it is a little played out. I promise kids watching this movie will get into middle school and high school and say "My God how many times can we tell the same story differently?!" It just seemed like a weakness on the writers' part by choosing something that has been taken for all its worth. Cute concept and they did modify the plot a bit but still...I have just had my fill of R&J. Also, the gnomes also use touch-up paint on themselves in the movie. Why didn't one of them think "Oh I can just repaint myself blue/red and go into the next yard?" I just thought that was a cool idea that should have been in the movie. Other than me feeling like it has a tired storyline, Gnomeo and Juliet is a perfect movie to pick up and entertain the little ones.

A pretty good family movie

I actually really enjoyed this. It was a great movie to just sit downand blob out to. I would rate it highly if you are looking for a moviefor all the family to watch. There was plenty of cuteness to keep theyoung ones happy, with enough comical references to amuse adults aswell. Sure, this does end with a happy ending, unlike the original. Ithought the conversation with the Shakespeare statue about this wasquite funny. I'm glad I didn't pay movie prices to see it but as acheap DVD, it was a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours. It was somuch better than some animated movies of late (e.g. the Hoodwinkedmovies or Yogi Bear).

Gnomeo and Juliet: 6/10

It spends a bit too much time working on the animation portion of thefilm instead of realizing that it has lots of flaws. The story of twognomes tribes that hate each other's guts, red and blue. And as thetitle says it all, the story of Romeo and Juliet is basically the plot(but with few tweaks). We all know the story and heard it tons oftimes, so perhaps they thought that they didn't need to develop thestory. Well, they're wrong. Instead of telling a story, we see lots ofdancing and 3D show-offs and a lot of music. Despite the impeccablesoundtrack by Elton John, we can't help but realize that nothing aboutthis cliché is special. Gnomeo and Juliet has its flaws, but the storyof Romeo and Juliet can be told in any shape or form and it would turnout great. With the gnomes version of Toy Story characters and smartwriting added with Elton John's soundtrack, Gnomeo and Juliet is a kidversion of Shakespeare's love tragedy.

Boring

When I saw the posters for Gnomeo & Juliet, before the movie came out in theaters, I was excited! I thought the movie would be cute and something unique, since nobody has created a video on the Shakespearian play, with gnomes before. I came out of the theater highly disappointed. The movie was very cheesy, it was corny through out the whole film and boring. If you watch the movie you will see what I'm talking about!

Whole Family Loved This Movie!

When Gnomeo & Juliet came out in the theaters over spring break, I was warned by a few friends do not go! It's terrible, their kids hated it. So we didn't go even though my girls wanted to. We just rented it in the mail and I have to say, we loved it! Watched it 5 days straight and my 2 1/2 yr old and 6 yr old have asked for it already for Christmas! My 2 1/2 yr old did not move the entire length of the movie, she almost never sits thru a movie. Something about it really held her attention and both girls laughed hysterically...mostly at jokes they were too young to understand, but it was fun enough for both of them to follow along with.Loved the concept, loved the story, loved the ending.I will be buying this one, its not for everyone as I am sure you have read; but for our family of four, it was a hit! Hard to find something these days we can all sit around and enjoy.

Ad usum delphini

old story. nice gnomes. a childish game in which Shakespeare is axis, part and false prophet. funny characters, events as marathon, hate, love, Heaven of two gardens and joy to discover population of thisspace. rabbits, deers, mushrooms, an impressive frog, red against blueand a toilet as support for flower, lawn mowers, disasters andromanticism. a flamingo in place of father Lawrence and Gnomeo motheras mother Goose. a delight far from any ambition. only exploration of aclassic subject in way of children. so, the end must be dressed inhoney of joy. a sweet show for every age. humor, touching scenes, smallemotions, inspired options. and voices of great actors in a kind ofexpedition in childhood land.

Adorable movie you'll be surprised how much you love!

I was pleasantly surprised watching this movie with my kids and husband. It was adorable! And it was updated, kid friendly, and used in-jokes to keep it Shakespearean! Not to mention that Patrick Stewart played a statue of William Shakespeare talking to Gnomeo (James McAvoy), when both played Professor X, one as the young version, one as the old... Plus, it as just feel goody, happy, and used mostly Elton John music for the musical numbers instead of made up sugary tunes, which just made it more funny. It was great! (And my kids loved it too, LOL.)

Wonderful Action with Great Music and Heart!

Gnomeo and Juliet, lets be real you saw the trailer you know its goingto be campy and if your spending your hard earned money on it youprobably think its going to be funny or you have children who thinkthat. Let me tell you I found it hysterical! I was in a foul mood onlygoing to the movie because it was promised and expecting a typical tripto the cinema filled with "Mommy, I'm Bored!" and "Mommy can we go?"which is so often the case as of late. Boy was I surprised! Not onlydid this film manage to enthrall and engage MY pesky kiddos, it did thesame for the whole theater! Parents, you know what I am about to say istrue, the mandatory bathroom visits in the middle of the movie anddemands for more popcorn and soda... Yeah... Didn't Happen at least notanywhere near me! And we did go to a PACKED showing! The kids wereooohing and aweing! Everyone laughed! And during the climax... somegasped... my girls climbed in my husbands lap as they were so worriedfor Gnomeo and Juliet! And a good tell of a great time, the audienceclapped for the movie and stayed to watch credits even tho there wereno bonus scenes as if no one wanted to the ride to end.Okay there are those who criticize it, and No this is NOT Shakespeareand it clearly lets you know that in the beginning! And also, PatrickStewart gives voice to Shakespeare's statue and he too agrees that thisis NOT classical! He also gets one of the better lines in the film! There are several throwbacks to Shakespeare which I will forgo tellingso you can enjoy yourself. You go to a kids film for some fun, somesilliness, and hopefully Happy Faces on your kids when you walk out ofthe theater! If you get that, the filmmakers succeeded. In my case, they did! I must add in the case of the kids I saw in the hall after, several groups... they did as well! I can say I can be and have beenhard on films made for adults, my past dictated some higher standardshaving known many in the industry. And I have also been hard onAnimated films, finding faults in the little inconsistencies. But Iwould not discourage a parent from taking their child to see a movie sofilled with fun. The flaws that others have found in the film-making ofthis movie I did not notice... I was too busy having FUN! Really...Come ON! Voices by Micheal Caine, Maggie Smith and Patrick Stewart! Andlet's not forget Dolly Parton and Ozzy Osbourne. James McAvoy doeswonderfully in giving life to Gnomeo and Emily Blunt is also amazing. But the be all standout character for this film was the music. Thesubtle ways Elton John's music was used to heighten the drama andcreate a comedy was priceless. I still can't get Benny and Jetts out ofmy head and they only used a few chords in the movie! When we came homemy girls asked about the songs and we spent a few minutes on YouTubewatching Elton John videos only to have the girls realize some of thejokes from the movie about Elton John and his crazy glasses! In short,I really enjoyed this movie. It is fun and moves quickly! If you likethe ads or the actors or music give it a chance!

Great movie for young ones

This review is from: Gnomeo & Juliet (DVD) We love gnomes in our household, and were very excited to watch this movie. It has a pretty innocent plot, which makes it suitable for all ages. It's fun and colorful. What more can you ask for?

The play of "Romeo and Juliet" with gnomes and a more kid friendly atmosphere

When I first saw the trailer for this movie I thought it was the worstidea ever. Making a movie based off a pun seem pretty bad. To mysurprise it was somewhat entertaining. It wasn't "Toy Story" or "How totrain your dragon" good, but it didn't make me want gauge out my eyes. The animation is good and the movie has a crap ton of well known actorsin it like Jim Cummings, Michael Caine, Emily Blunt, and even HulkHogan. The movie would definitely entertain kids and will get theoccasional smirk from the adult, but its not a movie you can reallywatch again. After all, the premise for the movie is pretty stupid, butit did take a dumb premise and did what it could with it. There a fewthings that did bother me which is more of a personal thing likequestioning how no notice a crap ton of gnomes have a war especiallyregarding the last seem where it seemed that even a deaf person wouldnotice whats going on. But I digress. Its not a terrible movie, but itsnot a really good one

Fun Romance Adventure and a Moral

This review is from: Gnomeo & Juliet (DVD) Good blend of story and humor, engaging characters, well cast voices and an imaginative interpretion of this Shakespere classic. The music of Elton John is used to good effect throughout. The humor definately has a British slant, but still travels well across the Atlantic. Viewing two or threee times reveals subtleties possibly missed on first viewing. Under-lying the fun and adventures, the story warns of conflict's futility and leaves you feeling a little wiser at the end.

Great for kids with no swearing sexual content or anything risky at all

This film is great for children with no swearing, sexual content, druguse, tongue in cheek or anything risky at all. For Adults, this has nofun or anything interesting to keep you interested. At least Shrek hadadult jokes kids can't understand so not endangering their little mindsbut giving us a laugh. This is just a easy going revamped version of aclassic that tries for humour and fails badly. This is possibly theworst cartoon film I have ever seen. This could have been a great filmand some jokes led up to you thinking it might be funny but most jokeswere aimed at children and parents that want to read a book whileletting their kids be occupied by something safe and friendly.
