This review is from: The Adjustment Bureau [Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy] (Blu-ray) The Adjustment Bureau - A hard film to stick in a particular genre. It's a Romantic Science Fiction film that deals focuses on fate and idea that a power out with our human control is manipulating events and deciding our destiny. Essentially this film is a love story between a hot shot politician (Matt Damon) and a up and coming ballet dancer (Emily Blunt) both on their way to greatness. This film works so well due to chemistry that Damon and Blunt have on screen. Dealing with such controversial concepts such as God and Fate is challenging to convey to an audience, but George Nolfi's seems to have managed to present these themes in a smart and digestible way. So far this is my favorite film of the year and I would give it a (B+) - Highly Recommended!!

Based on a short story "Adjustment Team" by Philip K. Dick and adjusted for the big screen by George Nolfi, this is one fun chase scene after another. If you look further into the story you can find layers of deeper meaning which are thinly veiled from the viewer. However the superficial story of lovers destined to be together and assisted by friends from another reality is quite enough to carry this movie.Looking closely at this film you'll notice that many of the people are not really actors there actually politicians and other famous people. However the filmmakers selected just the right actors to play the characters and the actors do not overwhelm the characters they are playing; so you to imagine yourself as part of the story and find yourself kibitzing. I missed this at the theater but did pick it up on Blu-ray and the particular DVD that I watched had a few interesting extras such as:Deleted and extended scenesThe labyrinth of doors: interactive map of New YorkLeaping through New YorkDestined to beBecoming a ElideFeature Commentary with/Director George NolfiAlso included extras or things like:My scenesD-boxI have to confess that only took advantage of the commentaries. Let me get this straight...this movie is telling me God wants another Democrat in the Whitehouse and the love for a woman was the only thing that saved us? Whew! That was close.Emily Blunt has good screen presence but that didn't save this movie.

I throughly enjoyed this flick from beginning to end. If you like futuristic films this would be the one to watch.

Really a taste of something different here. I expected a very serious suspenseful movie with the usual chase and bullets, but this had humor mixed in in such a way that really made it fresh and very enjoyable. The premise of the bureau and what it is remains mostly mysterious, but by the end of the film, we at least have a general idea of what it is and how it works - a tidy balance. It did remind me a bit of the Matrix with all the shuffling through doors, but that was very subtle, and, anyway, I like that movie too. Thanks to all the great reviews here already, I think that's about all I have to say. Very well done IMHO.

Yes it's about a politician, but no that is not the focus of it. The focus is how we get caught up trying to achieve, to win, and succeed...and we totally miss the fact that it isn't about that but about the hole we're trying to fill in us: Love.

What if just about everything in your life is controlled by some other force? What if you have no free will? Can you even stop it? These questions are the basis of the Adjustment Bureau, where Matt Damon's character, a promising senate nominee, is unintentionally exposed to the dealings of the 'Bureau'. He manages to stumble upon something he was never supposed to see, and sort of threatened to keep quiet about it, or else risk his whole memory being erased. He doesn't ask too many questions, and actually keeps going with the flow, except for one aspect. He meets a woman, played by Emily Blunt and instantly feels something. He can't explain it, but in his mind, she is the one for him. But unfortunately, she is not in his pre-fated path and the folks at the Adjustment Bureau tell him as much. He cannot be with her in any capacity and refuse to give him a reason as to why. This is mostly the entire plot of the film. After Blunt's character, an aspiring ballet dancer, dissapears for a while, Damon pines after her, trying in vain to locate her with no luck. Then after 3 years, as if by chance, he finds her again, and has the Adjustment Bureau guys on his back yet again. But this time he refuses to take no for an answer. I suppose this is more of a romantic film, rather than a thriller or mystery. The plot is very thin and never seems to want to be more. The Bureau men wear hats and can turn any door in NY into their own personal gateway to wherever they want to get to. There are glimpses of intrigue, but it never goes very far. Matt Damon is Matt Damon, not great, not poor. Emily Blunt is sweet and passive, but as usual has a great screen presence. The other characters are all part of the Bureau and are not terribly interesting. My one huge gripe with the film is the ending. I don't want to say it wasn't satisfying, but for me, it changed the whole message of the film, especially after the whole speech about what happened to the world throughout history when the Bureau did not interfere with anyone's lives... Sure, go ahead and tempt fate, you might even get a reward!

I loved this film and I thought that it was very well done! This film, though, was a roller-coaster ride. I mean by this that there wereboring parts then there were fast paced action parts then boring thenaction then so on and so forth. But over all very entertaining and agreat performance by all the cast! The thought of mysterious peoplewatching over you making things happen in life so everything will allturn out for the best kinda gets me thinking and will get you thinkingtoo. If you are looking for a good movie with action, romance, andsuspense all in one, then The Adjustment Bureau is for you. I highlyrecommend seeing it because you wont be disappointed!

First off I'd like to say that the reviewer below doesn't know what he's talking about, this movie was very good.I liked the creativity in it, and Damon was perfect for the part too because of all the running (which he's quite used to from the Borne trilogy) and action. But please, when I say action I do not mean that there is a lot of it. In fact, there isn't much at all, this movie is just "different" from others in a lot of ways. Not all of you will like it, but its definitely worth a watch.

This movie is mildly confusing in the beginning jumping from past to present....once you get through about fifteen minutes it pulls you in. The acting is Good. The story is Thought Provoking. The movie felt a little like Heaven Can Wait only with younger actors....and no deaths...just a movie about destiny and fate. I don't think of this movie as one I'd watch "over and over". You'll not find yourself mining any gems from the script. However its compelling enough to excite one's curiosity and make you think about "fate." Emily Blunt is a very talented lady and intriguing. Matt makes a convincing young politician.

The Adjustment Bureau is quite the surprise. It's a romance/science fiction type movie and... at first I didn't see how it was remotely possible to blend these two drastically different styles together and make something watchable, but after witnessing it I now see how! Let it be known that I'm a humongous fan of movie concepts that are just plain *different*. I honestly can't imagine anything else resembling the Adjustment Bureau. It's definitely unique. Leading viewers into thinking this is going to be yet another election/politician type plotline and then morphing into pure science fiction is a genius and *incredibly* surprising move. Many complaints that I've read are that the plot is difficult to follow. It's actually remarkably SIMPLE to follow- it's just that it's unbelievably different from everything else out there that it's hard to wrap your head around the concept. It's about these mysterious uniform-wearing men that make special appearances before Matt Damon's character. These men exist to make sure people do things "according to plan". The word "plan" is a frequently mentioned theme while watching the movie. You'll hear this word a thousand times, believe me. These men don't really have a specific name, and at first their presence is hard to understand because they just *appear* under mysterious conditions, so you're not really sure what to think about them until the film gets going.Well it turns out these men are convinced that Matt Damon's character has the potential to make a significant impact in his future concerning his role as a politician, so they always appear before him in a firm attempt to make sure he sets on the right course without any distractions, however...Matt Damon meets a beautiful woman that he falls in love with (of course, just *look* at her!) and every time he loses contact with the woman, he meets her again by total chance either during a bus ride or while walking down the city sidewalk, which means this is NOT part of the plan! Uh oh! This means the mysterious men are going to cause trouble for poor Matt. This means, according to the storyline, anything that goes against the plan will result in Matt's memory being erased. Well... that particular aspect seems to fall by the wayside after a while, because later on the strange men demand Matt Damon's character to make a really difficult decision- either break up the relationship with the girl so Matt can eventually become a powerful leader (I assume president of the United States) and his girlfriend will become the most famous dancer in the world, or... they can stay together and ruin all the potential they COULD have had. The choice is Matt's!To another one more element to the storyline, one of the men actually comes to Matt's aid to help him with these tough decisions. It sounds confusing but honestly the storyline is pretty simple to understand. It's just a radically different concept that most of us haven't experienced in a movie before. As a result, hey, I appreciate originality, so I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Sure, the concept of being able to change the future by deviating from a specific plan may seem really bizarre and unbelievable, but the fact the Adjustment Bureau is so original won me over in a huge way! Plus I loved the beautiful scenery of the door concept- whenever Matt Damon or one of the other men would go through a door, they would appear in a different environment. In one example, they went to a baseball stadium after leaving a dark stairway. It gets our imaginative juices flowing. You'll see what I mean when you watch it.I love the Adjustment Bureau. Basically the moral is that you have choices in your life, and free will, so you should take advantage of it.

I really liked this movie, but I can't believe how disparate the toneof the trailer is vs the tone of this movie. The people who approvedthe trailer should be canned, because in my opinion the trailer willlose audiences who might normally like this film. The trailer makes itseem like this is a hyper suspenseful and violent action thriller, which couldn't be further from what it is - an entertaining puzzler. Iwouldn't give it a 10, but it was genuinely entertaining with somefresh and interesting faces. Why everything seems to need to be soldlike and action thriller these days is confusing to me. I'm sure theytest market a lot of these things, but the trailer totally missed thepoint and I wouldn't have gone to see it had my friend really wanted togo and had I just noticed a decent review.

It's crazy enough for me to accept. Its concept of fate, and theactions of free will challenging those very predetermination's areinteresting enough to be moved by the love shared by two human beings. It was love at first sight as New York Senator David Norris (Damon) hadgone to the men's room in the wake of his latest defeat. His personalmoments are easily interrupted to his own good fortune as he meets andstrikes up one hell of a first kiss with a mysterious woman named Elise(Blunt), leaving him with the unending thought of seeing her again. Theconversation was filled with enough chemistry to spark that first kisswith as much passion as it brought to the very bond these twoindividuals share through their brief moments together. Like I said itwas love, however to the Adjustment Bureau, a group of guys dressed insuits, carrying the powers to move from door to door at the clockwiseturn of door knob, it was mistake. Their interference in David's lifereveals their own purpose as the guys who manage the fate of everyone. When someone falls off their predetermined plan they have to fix itwith a couple turns. Their intentions to keep the 2 love birds frommeeting, other than that one time cannot have been more than just abasic slip of the plan. I can't really stress on how crazy it was asthe more compassionate member of this team of destiny repairmen(Mackie) stated that in some ways they have been revered as angels, andI just thought hey, maybe wings are out of fashion, and they justsuited up. A style Barney Stintson from "How I Met Your Mother" wouldno doubt be proud to call an awesome form of religion. They even referto the man who runs all of them as the chairman. Whether or not they'retalking about God, I think director George Nolfi brings an interestingpoint, as well the fact that he mentioned the whole purpose of this wasto raise questions. Angels in suits would've been more of humorous wayof describing these guys. But were not here to talk suit. I'm talkingabout fate instead which can be a real bitch when the very concept offree will is more of an illusion for us to believe, rather coldlyrevered by the words of one of the bureau's top guys Thompson (Stamp)as they get desperate into telling David just how detrimental it isthat he and Elise stay apart. They can see the value of their love, aswell their very compassion towards one another. However they can seethe very devastation of that connection, shattering their dreams aswell their hopes of reaching their full potential. In David's case, despite having a previous bad boy background in his years of youth, hasa shot in the White House, as President in fact. Elise, with the beautyand rhythm of her nearly flawless dancing has a chance to go pro andreally make a name for herself. These revealed secrets only torture andpush David into a corner, as he contemplates on whether to decide iflife is truly better with or without Elise. The first 3 years of notseeing her, up until the moments they reunited were tough for him, butwhat was more painful was the last 11 months up until he prevents herpathetic attempts to marry a man whom she feels absolutely no happinesswhatsoever. He even gets a little assistance from Harry, who apparentlyreveals that they've got feelings. In an all night cram session,David's new powers take him all over Manhattan, finding andsurprisingly convincing Elise of his dilemma, despite some heatedfeelings from their last moments together. I can't say leaving someonein a hospital all by themselves is a good way of breaking up withsomeone, but it sure beats the cold and even slimy method of textbreakups. Needless to say, after challenging destiny, and even riskinga complete and inevitable fate similar to being lobotomized, the 2lovers are touched by the hands of fate, the word of the chairmanbecomes very clear, of a change plans. The power of love can conquerall. Despite challenging the very notion of destiny, these 2 charactersspent most of the movie thinking about one another endlessly. Theycherished, and fought for every moment they could be together. "TheAdjustment Bureau" is crazy, leaving several questions to be ponderedat a level of amused curiosity. As a Catholic I've been raised tobelieve that Angels resemble figures with halos and bird wings. Don'tget me wrong, I found the idea of the suits, as well as the moretechnologically advanced procedures they took to be intriguing. Thetransporting hats, the immobilization gadgets, and the plan books. Howdo we really know that Angel's really resemble the way they've beentold? I'm not going to say they're suit wearing, door opening destinyofficers. But the film's approach with that idea is telling us thatmaybe there are other possibilities with the Adjustment Bureau withit's officers and Chairman as synonyms for God and his Army of Angels.Above all the religious complexity, the film is impressive with theperformances of its leads. Matt Damon, portraying a politician, withboth Charisma, and even a history traumatic enough to serve as hisinspirations and even to reach his goals. Blunts' character interestingin the chemistry she shares with David, as well as her reactionstowards the whole issue of the being revealed a complete super naturalelements. The scene where David transports them to Liberty Island, shows a reaction that relies on not to much exaggeration of herreaction, displaying very convincible panic expressions.Director GeorgeNolfi has brought movie viewers a thriller with enough romance, intriguing forms of insanity, and even a reason for us to never allowour free will to go to waist.

I've been a fan of Matt Damon's work for 20 years now, since his early role in School Ties (1992). The Adjustment Bureau really blew me away, probably because I wasn't expecting the direction the film would take, and the chemistry between Damon and Emily Blunt is absolutely magical. It's unlikely to appeal to everyone - as the reviews clearly show - but I found the story riveting, with a balanced mix of romance, action and suspense. The cast is excellent, and George Nolfi deserves kudos for an impressive directorial debut. The scene where Damon and Blunt's characters meet for the first time sent shivers up my spine. And those dance sequences actually do help propel the movie even further. Will definitely watch this again and again.4.5 stars! :)

This was a movie that I watched without any preconceived notions aboutit. I thought at first that it was a political film as CongressmanDavid Norris (Matt Damon) was on his campaign to be the youngestSenator of New York. Then I thought it was a romantic film when Norrismeets a charming mysterious girl in a men's restroom (Emily Blunt), andgets hit with love at first sight. However, the script makes anotherturn and introduces us to the agents of the Adjustment Bureau, whosejob is to make sure the lives of each person goes according to theChairman's plans. Whoa, there is a supernatural dimension to thismovie, as well! I felt the movie was very interesting. You will get into the flow ofthe story and be very entertained. A big part of its connection withthe audience are the very appealing performances of both Matt Damon andEmily Blunt as the star-crossed lovers, David and Elise. Theirchemistry was charming and electric! Despite how the story was going, you will want to root for the two of them. I must admit you will havean inkling how everything would end up, but still you will want tofollow the story up to the very end to see how it goes. The specialeffects of the case books and the opening doors add to the thrill ofwatching. At the end of the movie though, you will be thinking about your ownlife, religion and fate. The "Chairman" is a none-too-subtle referenceto God. There is God's will and Man's will. The movie suggests that mancan get around God's will when he intently wants to make it happen. AsCatholics, we believe we should leave our life all up to God's will."Your will be done, not mine." Therefore, when personal religiousbeliefs come in, a film like this can go beyond shallow entertainment.I enjoyed watching "The Adjustment Bureau" as a suspenseful love story, although I may not necessarily subscribe to its inherent philosophicalpremise.

This was a brilliant film of how a man David Norris (Matt Damon) who isin the running for president, comes across a girl by sheer chance inthe mens room. With this one time escapade, an organization known asThe Adjustment Bureau steps in to prevent the couple from becoming morethan their plans suggest. With a random individual Harry Mitchell(Anthony Mackie) who works for the organization helps David in smallways as to not be noticed by another man Thompson (Terence Stamp) whois called the hammer. His ability is to sway David from joining withhis love Elsie Sellas (Emily Blunt) because of fate calling David to bepresident, and Elsie to become a world renowned dancer in the finearts. Yet if both join together against the organizations wishes, bothwill succumb to drastic changes to their own futures which David willnot become president, and Elsie will not become a famous dancer. Thisfilm shows great aspects of how the human condition really seethemselves. It causes a person to think, what if I turn right insteadof left? Or what road at the cross sections do I walk down? David didnot care, all he knew was how to love Elsie, and ignore how the fatesdealt the cards. A wonderful story of true devotion, in the ranks ofhumans, and how even a few employees of the chairman can defy their ownorders in the face of love. Fate is not always written in stone. Wedon't know what to chisel first. But that is the mystery. Excellentmovie, highly recommended.

I was expecting The Adjustment Bureau to be dark and sinister, insteadit turned out to be a meaningful cross  genre, uplifting love storywhich wasn't very sinister at all; which leads us to question thechoices we make and events of chance or fate that adjust our 'plan'every day.The part Sci-Fi, part love story between Senator elect Norris andcontemporary dancer Elise starts with a chance meeting in a men's room;not so curious when we find the free-spirited gal is gate-crashing aparty. The chemistry of this first encounter and the followingcharming, witty and convincing chance encounters immediately elevateour belief in the romance and allows us to invest care in our would belovers from the start. This makes The Adjustment Bureau work best as alove story; Matt Damon and Emily Blunt are great together as thebeautiful, but thankfully unpolished and believable love-birds.Further events of chance, fate and intervention by "the people who makesure things go according to plan" conspire to pull apart and push ourlovers together. The inevitable head scratching and guesswork starts when we crossgenres and first meet 'Mad men's' John Slattery and Anthony Mackie asthe initially one dimensional chase-giving men from the bureau; taskedto "nudge" Norris back in the right direction. The later entrance ofthe superb Terrence stamp as the quite ruthless 'Thompson' brings someoverdue peril and even grander revelations about "the appearance offree will". It is here where this hybrid could have gone very wrong, but first timedirector Nolfi manages to succeed in the mixing of Sci-fi and lovestory as he ultimately does both very well; binding the two withimportant thought provoking themes, engaging and often charmingscreenplay and strong characterisation; in particular Mackies'portrayal as the "case officer" with a heart.Comedy is provided curiously and possibly unintentionally at times bythe suits of The Bureau. Often haphazard, often just negligent in theirsupposed really important roles, they are one minute virtuallysuperhuman, the next quite inept. Either way, their human likefrailties makes for some genuinely funny moments and also leads us tocare for them too, when they too question their own sense of right andwrong and the choices they make. Director and screenwriter George Nolfi sets a solid pace throughout andkeeps our attention with some well-timed, but slightly predictablereveals and solid direction, with some beautifully framed shots. Theneat score compliments the on screen action well. Fate, chance and the question of how much free will we are trulyafforded run through 'The Adjustment Bureau' and it is these themesthat really give meaning to our protagonists struggle to evade thesupposed plan. Every choice has always been and always will be ofconsequence, every act has repercussions and events can often befateful. Even random chance events have great resonance, chanceseemingly being far more influential than any supposed predeterminedplan. The film and the mixed genre experiment works because of thesethemes as we too begin to question for ourselves and not just followwhat transpires on screen. Everything we do causes a "ripple" and youwill be left with one big question  "24 hours in a day, 24 beers in acase  coincidence?" I WAS expecting The Adjustment Bureau to be dark. I am glad to say thatthe lighter, uplifting and meaningful film I got, rather than theexpected sinister one (suggested by menacingly toned pre-releaseposters and trailers) was in the end; welcome. This perhaps made for amore enjoyable ride than a more formulaic, dark figured men inraincoats (been done before) chase movie. Not to say The AdjustmentBureau sometimes didn't follow a well-trodden formula and isn't withoutflaws; It was executed well and just balances slightly better as acharming meaningful love story; smartly tied together by the thingsthat matter to us all.

Until yesterday when I wasted 2 hours of my life I was totally unawareof this Nolfi fellow. The Sentinel, Oceans 95210's, BourneUltimatum...Well, all of these would have served me as a fair warning, but I was oblivious. Shame on me, because I had seen them all, and theman has absolutely no clue about what he's writing about. Paper thincharacters, ludicrous story, and laughable cardboard cliché dialog.Sample: "All I have are the choices I make, and I choose her, come whatmay." Well, Tarantino's certainly got nothing on you, Nolfi...For those who are not familiar with Nolfi's oeuvre, here making hisunfortunate directorial debut, expect a simple plot, no surprises, nothing new, nothing deep, nothing funny, no new filming technique, afair insipid Damon, a fair Blunt, no chemistry whatsoever, noopportunity for chemistry whatsoever, a tired and apathetic Stamp, anda ludicrously adapted K.Dick story, some basic elements borrowed from"Dark City" 1998(men in hats which adjust us while we sleep), and "TheLost Room" 2006(doors which lead to far places) which unfolds like asoap opera episode of The Young and the Restless. Expect an uninspiredsoundtrack, and no twist. Yeah, that's right, there is no twist. Andexpect John Slattery with all the wardrobe from Mad Men. I guess withthe recession and all, they thought of a way to keep the suits inrotation to maximize rentability. In a nutshell, expect no reason toremain seated and continue watching.Pff, I'm not even having fun dissing it...Avoid like bird crap on ablue obnoxious hat...Bo-riiiing! Nolfi, noted. No more surprises.
