Disappointing film that could have been better

Just saw this on TV, and have happily now erased it. With a good script, this could have been an interesting film. It's a "very thin cup of tea" of a movie. All too thin. A good scriptwriter could have done something with the idea and given the characters something interesting to do and say. My advice: rent it before you buy it.

A story to make you smile beginning to end, one of a kind

A great, funny, sweet movie with Morgan Freeman (who plays himself) andwho meets a Spanish girl named Scarlet (Paz Vega) at a small storewhilst researching a potential independent film. I was a bit dubiousabout the film for the first ten minutes but as soon as he was in thestore I really started to enjoy the film. It shows how a positiveattitude can change anything. It does not contain any complex plots andit is easy to follow but will lift the saddest of moods and make yousmile all the way through without the need for petty cliché romance. Itincludes several scenes all the way through which make you clutch yoursides with laughter. A very rare masterpiece!

Aimless, a few cute scenes, high snooze factor

A rambling movie without a point (except for gather thee roses, dully stated) and long scenes of watching people check out, make pay phone calls, ride down rodes. A few mildly cute scenes save it from the dust bin of 1 star reviews, and of course Morgan's presence always adds a bit of gaiety. I've yet to see Paz Vega act. As usual she just stands around as a Hispanic stereotype. Dreadful movie with zero chemistry besides Morgan's coy smile.

How can one not love this movie?

Seriously, how? It's truly a very engaging movie, beautifully conceivedand performed. It's one of those movies I'll watch again and again tobe delighted, to learn and, of course, to feed my eyes, my heart andsoul with Paz Vega's perfections. It's showcase that demonstrates whyshe and Morgan are GREAT. Everyone else add their talents to make itthe gorgeous movie it is. Only Jim Parsons could deliver those briefbut tremendous lines. To watch Morgan learning to sell house cleaningstuff, washing and polishing cars, and doing many other ordinary, common, earthly things, create a relaxing and intimate atmosphere thatmakes you join the cast and travel along with its two main characters. The finale couldn't be better in its message: respect, honor andcharacter are still alive, and remain as valuable as ever. From startto end, a story made to sooth and heal sensible, tired and hurt souls.I love it. It is certainly good use of time. What else can I say? Justwatch and see.

Okay Movie, Could Have Been Better

I had heard glowing reviews on this movie when it was first released, but didn't get a chance to see it in the theaters. I rented itrecently, and honestly, it was sort of a letdown. I'm glad I didn'tshell out the nine dollars to see it in the theater. The plot is very simple. A long out of work, but well known actor(who's never named in the movie but played by Morgan Freeman), doessome research for a role as a grocery store manager for a low budgetindie movie. He is dropped off at a shabby little grocery/conveniencestore in a working class town he's never been to before. There he meetsthe highly unhappy Scarlet (Paz Vega), who he can see is both beautifuland smart. Being naive (obviously he's been out of the loop so longthat he forgot what the world outside of his upper class neighborhoodwas like--or perhaps he was never 'in the loop' to begin with) hebefriends and encourages Scarlet, going on various errands with her, including a job interview for a large construction firm.If you're looking for action, this isn't the movie to see. There isalmost no action here. And there's LOTS of dialogue. This is supposedto be one of those thoughtful little movies done on the cheap. This isn't a bad movie, but there were many elements of it thatbothered me. The biggest one is that it seemed too impressed withitself. I got the feeling that the person who wrote the script wantedthis movie to make some important statement about life, but it neverdoes get to that. Also, I got the impression that The Actor wassometimes belittling Scarlet and her surroundings. It seemedunrealistic that he wouldn't know that Target existed and that youcould get a T-shirt for eight dollars. I think he always knew, but hewas just making semi-uppity comments about it. Although he didgenuinely want to help Scarlet, it seemed at the same time he felt shewas beneath him and was 'grooming' her for a slightly elevated role inlife. Also what bothered me is that I got the feeling the actor onlybefriended Scarlet because she was beautiful and classy. If she wasjust smart, but Plain Jane, he probably wouldn't have even botheredwith her. Later on, it appeared he was making the moves on her, eventhough he was married and had children. Although Paz Vega does afantastic job playing the bitter and cynical Scarlet, it's obvious thatthe movie wants to show you it's her looks and gym toned body that aregetting her places, not her brains.I think Morgan Freeman is one of the best actors ever (he wasincredible in 'The Shawshank Redemption') but he was miscast here. He'sbetter in heavier, smarter roles. He can pull off the charm andoutgoingness, but not the naiveté and goofiness of this character. Icould see some of his lines were supposed to be funny, but they fallflat. I think more of a comedic, but still well respected actor,(Dustin Hoffman, maybe?) would have worked better here.I didn't particularly care for the ending, either. I realize the writerdidn't want to go with 'happily ever after', but this one wasn'tparticularly realistic or satisfying either. I was hoping for a littletwist at the end, but this one just leaves the viewer flat.Overall, it's an okay movie, but I wouldn't expect anything mindblowing, funny or particularly exciting. It's just a cute, bland littlemovie, and if you don't expect it to be more than that, then you'll behappy with it.

A very genuine movie!

This movie is really genuine and random. It's really hard to findmovies like it in bunches of movies now in Hollywood. I really enjoywatching this movie, i bought its DVD Tuesday this week and i'vewatched it for 4 times. I love the Spanglish accent of Paz, it s justreally cute as she is. And her acting and Morgan's are so funny andnatural. My movie taste might be really different from others but i have to sayi really love this movie, the simple is the best!I've learned something more about life from this movie (well, or atleast USA's life)... life is really random... Sometimes, u meetsomeone, they pass by your life and be your friends coincidently, and udon't spend so much time with them, maybe just a while but u enjoy that''while'' with them, and then u and them will never meet each otheragain, but the time u are together is really unforgettable. Just keepthose moments in your mind as grateful and nice memories...This movie might be cheap in the making price but its meanings aretotally not cheap. I rarely can learn anything from movies, but this isan exception.

one life journey that may make you happier forever

I have seen '10 items or less' before, but I watched again today as itwas my birthday. I wanted to see the kind of movie I appreciate themost: emotionally touching, life-affirming and dealing with humanrelationships. '10 items or less' never disappointed me in thisrespect. It doesn't have much of a plot; it doesn't need it. It's thehuman contact that makes the film special. I loved all the little sillyand funny things Morgan did when meeting other people, and the way hepicked up Scarlet. She was lucky to meet him as he decided to help hergain a new perspective on her life. Morgan encouraged her to go to aninterview for a job she dreamed of and supported her all he could.Scarlet was able to talk about her concerns with a real actor who knewthat life was about playing roles. Pick a role you like and havecourage to play it. I was pleased to see Morgan take joy in the humaninteraction. The film can certainly make you get a more relaxedapproach to life and give you ideas how to make it more interesting andenjoyable.

High Scores for Honesty and Simplicity in a Meaningful Dialogue

10 ITEMS OR LESS was made in two weeks on a shoestring budget bywriter/director Brad Silberling, just a little film shot in Carson, CAthat feels like the entire story was improvised...in the best sense ofthe word. Silberling had the good fortune to pair veteran actor MorganFreeman, in between his big projects, with Spanish actress Paz Vega, and the result is a dialogue between two people from different vantageswho manage to enhance the life of the other.Morgan Freeman plays himself - yet part of the comedy is that he isdepicted as an actor who has been out of work for four years, scoutinga location for a little 'filler film' to get back into the flow ofthings. His 'role' is to be that of a market manager and he is droppedoff at seedy market in Carson where he encounters, among others, oneScarlet, the girl at the argumentative 10 Items or Less checkout line. Not only is Scarlet tired of her static job, she is also generallyangry about her philandering husband (Bobby Cannavale), currentlysleeping with Scarlet's lazy co-worker (Anne Dudek), and her lack ofability to get a decent job elsewhere. The two pair after a few sharedproblems and off they go on a 'road trip' that results in each of thecharacters growing from the presence and life story of the other. It is a simple story, simply told, but because of the tender bondingbetween Freeman and Paz it works very well. This is one of those littlefilms about human relationships where being vulnerable to change andexchange is the message. It is well worth viewing, and this is a DVDthat has featurettes that are touching, informative, and comic - apleasure to view. Grady Harp

A Modern Day Two For The Road

Morgan Freeman plays a well-known actor, who hasn't accepted a role infour years, that is considering a film project. The cousin of thedirector drives him to Archie's Ranch Market, and drops him off to do alittle research. He's fascinated by one of the checkers, Scarlet playedby the gorgeous Paz Vega, a young woman from Spain with a preternaturalability to ring up items at the cash register at the 10 Items Or Lesslane. The actor chats her up, and when her shift ends, he asks for aride. Thus begins the movie,10 Items Or Less - a modern day Two For The Roadminus the love story. In the course of the movie, he helps her preparefor a job interview. He teaches her to have self-confidence and in theprocess,he learns to commit from her. The themes of human connectionand communication is explored in the story. The film is great as both Freeman and Vega were honest in theirportrayal and have shown great chemistry together.Freeman is as usualalways good while Vega needs to improve on her delivery of lines as sheevokes less emotion due to her difficulty in speakingEnglish.Overall, the communication and exchange of ideas between twocharacters - the actor and Scarlet - is practically the wholemovie.Although many may find this film boring,I still would enjoy thesetypes of films that provides people a view on how two people ofdifferent background can help instill change on one another. A 10 andnot less should definitely be the rating of this film.

One of the best music videos I've ever seen

Yes, it's a bit less than a movie, and the lead actress's accent can make it hard to follow some of her lines (did Freeman originally envision Penelope Cruz in the role, btw?). But what could be called the music video (or utopian vision) at the film's heart is so wonderful it's worth the price of admission, especially with the video currently selling for a penny (plus S&H) on Amazon. Feels like Freeman had this recurring fantasy of what he'd do if he could just do what he wanted, and it's all over this very loving movie.

BOR-ing!!

I love Morgan Freeman. Paz Vega is an attractive, appealing andtalented actress. I'm sure that this would have been a good movie hadanything happened in it. Nothing does. It's short (less than 90minutes). It was 75 minutes too long. After an hour of frustration, Iscanned through the remaining 20-odd minutes. Excruciating.Freeman plays an actor - who hasn't worked in a while - researching apart that he might play, as a checkout clerk in a supermarket. Hevisits the supermarket where she works. Nothing happens. She decides togive him a ride home and they go to an Arby's, a Target, a car wash.Nothing happens. They converse about their lives. Nothing happens.Ever.I don't get it. But I also don't get the Bill Murray flicks "Lost InTranslation" and "Broken Flowers". If you like those movies, maybeyou'll like this. Lots of people find movies like this whimsical, charming, or - for reasons that escape me - find the dialogfascinating. A common device in movies of this ilk is to have a LONGtake of stillness/silence after an actor delivers a line that'ssupposed to be meaningful. We know it's meaningful because it'sfollowed by two minutes of nothing on the screen. Sorry, I must be aphilistine. I don't get it. To me, these kinds of movies aren't funny,or charming, or thought-provoking. They're just boring. Why? Becausethere's no comedy. No drama. No tension. No laughs. No suspense. Noaction. Nothing to watch. In short, none of the things I go to themovies for. I can be bored for free. I see oddball/quirky characters inreal life. I go to Target, and fast-food restaurants, and car-washes.These elements do not a movie make, even if stars are doing this stuff.I pay to be entertained. If you're crazy about Morgan Freeman and just like to hear him rambleon about nothing, have fun. If you wanna drool over Paz Vega, you canlook and listen to her. But nothing happens, I promise. A totalsnoozefest.

After this, I enjoyed Lost in Translation again

After I watched this movie, I came to IMDb and read some of thereviews, which compared it to Lost In Translation LITE. When I readthat I immediately could see the reviewers point. This movie was a poor attempt at a similar theme. Interestingly, theformat of the movie is nearly identical, but the PACING is incrediblydifferent. "10 Items" rushes the viewer through the 1-day time line ofthe movie, whereas the better-planned "Lost In..." seems to stretch outover a few long days.I'm sure some people will see this because it has Morgan Freeman, andwill be disappointed. It seems his better roles now-a-days aresupporting roles in big blockbusters, rather than leading roles insub-$10mil limited release movies and indie films.

Different, original, funny but not overdone, great cast and a good little indie film

Picked this one up at random, Always liked Morgan Freeman, and it seemed interesting from the description. And Thankfully, the experiment worked out. An actor researching a potential role as a grocery store manager in an independent film hooks up with the express lane (10 items or less) cashier. And for whatever reason, the stars aline and they bond over the course of the day. Ending is kinda different and abupt, but hey, its good, keeps you thinking. Just a great original film, worth checking out. Some good laughs, and actually a decent theme.

Unexpected and Likeable

This is a little movie that goes nowhere at a moderate pace.Morgan Freeman plays an actor like Morgan Freeman and Paz Vega is a ranch market check-out cashier. These two are a couple of likeable characters who find themselves thrown together for a few hours because she needs to go on a job interview and he doesn't have a ride home. The rest of the movie is just sort of a day-in-the-life of these two souls as they accomplish simple tasks, like going to Target for a new blouse for her, or getting her car washed, or eating a take-out meal. The blouse is quite revealing, by the way, and will provide gentleman admirers of Ms. Vega with an eyeful. There are no car chases, gun fights or explosions. There is an off-screen fight between Ms. Vega and her estranged husband (a dispute over car keys) which sounds as though it may result in a physical injury to him of some sort, but we are not sure what it is that she has done to him.Mr. Freeman is charming, as ever, but not much of an English accent - that's OK, as I don't really expect it from Americans anymore. I really enjoyed the soundtrack, too - a nice old Paul Simon song throughout the final sequence.

We are all the same

Touching and hopefull. A movie about support, friendship, and the comonality of the human delima. Paz Vega is great to look at, Morgan Freeman is engaging, and tyhe music is moving. A light film with a deep message.

Not a memorable film, but a decent one nonetheless

I'm a big advocate of independent film, and "10 Items or Less" issurely one that scores. If you're a Morgan Freeman fan (and whoisn't?), you should enjoy yourself. He's great at anything he does, butin this particular film his performance seems much more natural. Thismay have something to do with the fact that he's portraying anextension of himself. For some reason, it seems like the lesser thebudget, the better performances you get out of actors. There's not amoment in the film where Freeman doesn't seem to be having a blast withhis role. Paz Vega gives a decent performance, but her incredibly thickaccent makes a lot of the dialogue hard to understand. She learnedEnglish phonetically for this movie (not having learned English whendoing "Spanglish"), and unfortunately it shows. For now, I think sheshould stick to doing movies in her native language. Anyway, if you'relooking for a harmless independent film with good characters and gooddialogue, I would recommend this film. It's surely not a gem, but it'sworth watching.

A Good Conversation Piece

There's no real plot to this film. It's all about two people whose lives briefly touch and who make a touching, unlikely connection. There are a few too many quirks ladled into these characters' behavior to make them truly believable. Morgan Freeman plays an actor whose career is lagging and who therefore has agreed to star in the very indie film of a Hollywood newcomer. Freeman is chauffeured out to the limbo of a grocery store set in an improbably desolate industrial parking lot area, so that he can study a real store manager in preparation for his movie role. It's hard to imagine that any actor, however flagging his career, would take the time to venture off on such a goofy course of study. Then Freeman is given the odd habit of clutching at the napes of passersby in order to sneak a peek at their clothing labels and check them for fabric content. Who does that? That is a bizarre eccentricity that the scriptwriters truly dragged in by the mohair. There is also something rather unconvincing about the behavior of the young check-out clerk whom Freeman befriends. She moves from being a sullen, skeptical girl with a chaotic personal life, to being an open, heartfelt woman of calm philosophy. That sort of quick transformation is hardly believable.Still, there is something appealing about this movie. You don't get many films that feature people getting to know each other fondly just by talking. This is no "Dinner With Andre," but if you enjoyed that movie showing two people weaving themselves together with zigzag stitches of conversation - then you will like this film.

Whiff of Fresh Air

10 ITEMS OR LESS is one of those 'under the radar' pictures that isdrenched in the simplicity that most independent movies have: honest,ad hoc performances by its two leads -- Morgan Freeman and Paz Vega whoestablish quite a complementary if unlikely duo. The great thing is,this entire movie looks improbable despite its 'road movie' roots. HowMorgan Freeman's unnamed character psychically (not physically)arrivesto where he meets this jaded check-out girl who has an unhealthyrelationship with her current supervisor (who also happens to begetting it on with her philandering husband played by Bobby Cannavalein a small role) is somehow left for us to witness more than deduce andtheir witty banter -- two people on opposite sides of the coin ofsociety -- is deceptively simple. So, in a nutshell, while there aren'tany bang! moments of Earth-shattering revelations, this movie is aquirky little mood piece that probably otherwise got lost in theshuffle of indies which came out in 2006 but deserves to be seen, ifonly for its honesty.

I couldn't even finish this movie.

I love Morgan Freeman in just about any movie but this one was all shaking camera and idiotic dialog.
