Rango is an ordinary chameleon who accidentally winds up in the town of Dirt, a lawless outpost in the Wild West in desperate need of a new sheriff.
Visitor Reviews: (20)The_Film_Cricket 16 May 2012
Rango is a brilliant, insane act of genius. Here is an animated comedythat is outrageously funny, but also endearing, smart and strikinglyoriginal. It expands the art of animation by creating an entirely newworld populated by well-defined characters and presents both with depthand detail and imagination. Its story lovingly borrows elements fromgreat movies of the past, everything from Apocalypse Now to Chinatownto Stagecoach and A Fistful of Dollars, yet it has the crazy, madcappace of a Bugs Bunny cartoon. The story is wonderfully inspired. It involves the titular hero, askinny, bug-eyed lizard who has spent most of his life alone playing inan aquarium until one day it crashes on the highway and he findshimself lost in the Nevada desert. He is Rango (with the voice ofJohnny Depp), and through the winds of fate, he is blown into the tinytown of Dirt, a filthy burg populated by every western movie stereotypeyou can imagine, but played by a host of western varmints: turtles, ravens, prairie dogs, moles, rats, you name it. They are running out ofwater, which is kept stored in a 5 gallon water cooler jug. They needit for their very livelihood. Rango knows that Dirt has a problem andwants to be the guy that the townsfolk look up to even though theirproblems are much bigger than he initially realizes. His love interest,a rancher's daughter named Beans (with the voice of Isla Fisher) is alittle more intuitive than Rango and suspects that the water is beingdiverted and dumped into the desert. The immediate threat to the town of dirt is the presence of a menacinghawk that flies overhead and threatens to eat the townsfolk for lunch.Rango - sort of by accident - kills the hawk and is decreed the town'ssheriff by Dirt's Mayor, an aging turtle voiced by Ned Beatty. Excisingthe hawk, however, creates a larger problem. That comes in the (veryimpressive) form of a new villain named Big Snake Jake, voiced by BillNighy, who was afraid of the hawk but now has nothing to fear. Heintimidates the population of Dirt with an underlying purpose that onlygradually becomes clear. There is a lot going on in Rango, the plot ismuch larger and far more compelling than we are led to believe. Infact, the story, once it gets underway, is borrowed very wonderfullyfrom Roman Polanski's Chinatown (the water part, not the incest). Ittook me a moment to realize that the character of The Mayor is actuallydesigned to look and sound like John Huston's Noah Cross and I smiledwith great delight when he informs Rango about "The future, Mr. Rango. The future." The whole movie is like that. The more you know aboutmovies and American myth, the deeper the movie's roots go, and even ifyou don't, the movie it still very entertaining. The story is full andgenerous It doesn't telegraph it's story in advance but reveals itgradually. At once it is a slapstick comedy, the next a wild westernadventure and then a bizarre murder mystery. It creates an entire worldbased on western mythology and pays homage to great movies of the pastwithout using pop culture references as a crutch. The film is dazzling to look at. The texture of the western town hassuch depth and presence that you forget that all of this wasmanufactured by animators. There's a great action sequence in themiddle of the film in which the heroes are engaged in a gun battle inthe middle of a canyon and you stop to remind yourself that this isn'tMonument Valley of all those John Wayne pictures. The character designs are wonderful too, especially Rango, played witha sort-of Don Knotts flare right down to the Hawaiian shirt hangingfrom his bony frame. Johnny Depp provides the voice and it is really agood performance. Through his voice, he gives Rango as much personalityand dimension as he did to Jack Sparrow or The Mad Hatter or SweeneyTodd. In fact all of the characters have a particular depth, they areall western movie types of all shapes and sizes, they are fun to watchand fun to listen to. I especially liked the presence and depth of BigSnake Jake, a rattlesnake who seems to have been inspired by Lee VanCleef with his narrow eyes, his pencil-thin mustache and that bandoleerstrap wrapped around his limbless middle. There is so much to Rango that I haven't even touched on, I could go onand on about it. Here is a movie that has so many wonderful things init, and such wonderful humor (There are many very big laughs here) justin the way the characters are presented and the way they talk to eachother that you find yourself feeling that you feel that your second orthird viewing will reveal things that you missed the first time around.I wish more animated films were this ambitious. Here is a movie sogenerous with its story, its visual texture and its characters that itis an example of what great animation can be.

Imagine the plot and story board meetings when this movie was created.Lets make it animated, everyone loves animation. Let's get Johnny Deppto voice the main part, everyone loves Johnny.Let's make Johnny's character a chameleon who pretends to be agunslinger in a town that has run out of water. Lets make all thesupporting characters very odd animals with weird character traits anddeformities, all highlighted with hyper realistic animation. Oh andlets make one of the characters have an arrow through his eye, in placefor most of the later scenes.Somebody at the back might also add, lets remove most of the humour andhave some very odd lines - "I found some human spine in my fecalmatter" and lets make the theme of the plot something only adults mighteven begin to comprehend.Lets get some things straight, the animation, voice work andcharacterizations are a joy. But and this is a massive but, who is thefilm aimed at. It would be financial suicide to make an expensiveanimated film about strange animals just for adults, wouldn't it? Thewhole film is peppered with surreal moments but involves a chameleonattempting to save a town from assorted bad guys voiced by Bill Nighyand Ned Beatty. This all transpires in the town of "Dirt", a spaghettiwestern town with no water, apparently exclusively populated andterrorized by characters straight from "Deliverance", the animatedversion. We have mystical surreal sequences, very long words, high decibelclassical music (Ride of the Valkyries), an owl Los Lobos group andplays within plays. All of the above, in Disney fashion, book ended bymassive chase sequences, all thrown together in a gigantic mashup onthe screen. There are long periods of boredom, Ray Winstone picks the film up butthen promptly disappears again. We gradually drag ourselves to a grandfinale but it is a very long time coming and many will not worry orcare too much about the outcome. There are numerous in jokes but it would appear the film makers, director Gore Verbinski of "Pirates of the Caribbean" fame, have waytoo many ideas. Normally 20% would make it into the movie, hereeverything is on the screen and it is not pretty or easy to watch. The young audience in this reviewers screening seemed very confused andremained resolutely quiet, not a good sign. The film is likely to betoo scary for young children with some very inappropriate images for afilm presumably aimed at youngsters - owl characters in nooses ready tobe hanged.... anyone laughing at the back.Pixar have little to worry about here apart from the almost photorealistic animation, hang that on a decent story aimed at a particularaudience, then maybe the famous Pixar angle poise light might start totremble, just a bit.SummaryFrustrating, boring, odd, scary, slow and difficult to watch in places, all words not desirable in a summary for an animated film for youngerpeople.Difficult to recommend to any audience, especially young children, despite stellar animation and great voice acting.http://julesmoviereviews.blogspot.com/

A Johnny Depp film that dons its lead character in the Hawaiian shirtof ANOTHER Depp portrayal ? THEN has this new chap actually intersectwith the original character in a fun twist on both their story lines?I'm in!It's a familiar story - a silver-tongued, lonely coward flamboozlespeople into believing he is their hero. Uncharacteristically, he comesto embody exactly those traits - until he is outted by the evil, greedyPTB. Along the way, he befriends, and comes to rely on, a smattering ofoddball characters. Resolve reinforced, he throws himself back into thefray.I'll admit, I am not familiar with all the classics this animated piecepays homage to. But, there were enough clever shots, word play, and awell-paced plot that my attention was fixed throughout the movie. I love the freedoms that animation affords a well-written story. Thereare actions and belief- suspending scenarios that, in a live-actionpicture, would seem....well, animated. Facial expressions, flights offancy and poking fun at pop culture (old and new) were some of theelements that evoked classic Looney Tunes episodes - full of suggestiveasides, exaggerated, yet underplayed stereotypes, and the inevitablepotty humor. This is one of those movies that makes me want to watch the films ittakes its elements from - and then go back and give a second view inorder to appreciate how it was all pulled together. I had one or two"Labyrinth"-like moments where I noticed small details, easilyoverlooked that add to the enjoyment of this film. It's a predictably happy ending, but the path taken to the payoff iswhat makes Rango worth riding along.

The funny and powerfully weird Rango is probably the closest I've seen a big-budget, computer-animated feature get to the comic vibe of my favorite Chuck Jones cartoons.

I really enjoyed this movie, more than I thought I would. I wouldn't recommend it to younger children but for 13 and up it's great and I highly recommend it.

This review is from: Rango (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) Rango is the best animated feature I've ever seen. After this movie, you know you can never trust what you see on TV again. The movie pays homage to many Westerns including the metal beak on the hawk that brings up memories of 'Cat Ballou' and a cosmic Clint Eastwood clone.

I took my kids to see this film when it first came out. I was a little hesitant at first, especially after reading about the violence in the film. However, mine (8 and 13 years old) absolutely loved it. The story line is interesting and there were even small jokes hidden in there for us adults. The whole family loved it. I had to pick this one up on blu-ray right away when it came out.

In a world choked with animated films -- the good, the bad and the ugly -- it's hard to be either original or great. Yet director Gore Verbinski has done both -- and without 3-D...

There's a lot to like about Rango, the colourful, kooky chameleon looking for enlightenment in this unique and imaginative animation that takes the form of a Western, and embraces a zoo of weird and wonderful characters

RANGO(a film review by Mark R. Leeper)CAPSULE: A pet chameleon falls from a truck in the middle of the Nevada desert. He soon finds his way to the dying Western town of Dirt where his bragging and his lucky defeat of a predatory hawk make him the town's new sheriff. Sadly, the town is drying up for shortage of water. In the best Western tradition Sheriff Rango sets out to save the town. Sight gags, film references, jokes, action, and just plain funny storytelling follow as thick as a hail of bullets. Director Gore Verbinski shows his animation direction of John Logan's script is as good as his live-action direction on films like PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN. This is a smart, hip comedy that works for adults and youngsters alike. Rating: high +2 (-4 to +4) or 8/10RANGO is a "funny animals" sort of animated film, but the writing andsituations are funny enough that it might turn out to be one of thebest animated films of the year.In a world like ours (but where intelligent talking animals liveside-by-side with humans) the chameleon who comes to be called Rango(voiced by Johnny Depp) would like to be an actor. He dreams of a lifein front of a camera. Then his habitat terrarium rolls off the back ofa truck and he finds himself stranded in the dry Mojave Desert. Hewanders into the animal-run frontier town of Dirt. Swaggering into thesaloon he tries to play the part of a Western tough guy. He brags thathe killed a gang of seven outlaws with a single bullet. In a fight withpredatory hawk Rango lucks out and kills the hawk. The townspeople nowbelieve his bragging and want Rango as their new sheriff--failing totell Rango that his predecessors named to that job may have lived toregret it ... or not.But Rango probably won't have his job long. Dirt has some realproblems. Rango comes to the town just as Dirt is parceling out to itscitizenry the last few days of water. When the water source dies thetown will soon follow it, and that day is less than a week away.Meanwhile the mayor (Ned Beatty) of the town seems to still have bigplans. He tells Rango that who controls the water controls everything.Okay, let me digress here. This is what THE INCREDIBLES called"monologing." It is a major weakness in the writing. This statement isthe key to everything that is happening in the town. In his anxiousnessto make sure the viewer knows what is going on writer John Logan hasthe mayor saying exactly the wrong thing to the new sheriff. It is nothard for the viewer to figure out who the villain has to be just by hisappearance. This is virtually a confession before Rango even knowsthere is chicanery going on. And part of the chicanery is the stealingof the plot of CHINATOWN. Another part is the counterfeiting of a cameoappearance that had me fooled. Timothy Olyphant does a spot-onimpression of another famous actor. I found completely convincing, andI am generally good with voices. There were several familiar actors voicing major roles. Besides Depp,Beatty, and Olyphant, there was Isla Fisher, Abigail Breslin, AlfredMolina, Bill Nighy, Steven Root, Harry Dean Stanton, and Ray Winstone.Animation directors seem to feel the public needs familiar voices toappreciate the characters. I frankly doubt that most viewers pick up onall these voices. Admittedly some of these are very good actors. Butthe film industry is full of good and deserving actors who are out ofwork. I personally think that it is bad for a successful actor toaccept a voice-only role that could go to an actor less successful. It is good that animated films are starting to be considered acceptablefor adults with or without children to see. Some of the best writing isgoing into animated films. I often find myself in theaters seeinganimated films where my wife and I are the only party without childrenpresent. Good writing should be savored and appreciated and there wasreally even too much good writing for anyone--adult or child--to takein on one viewing.Smart, crafty, hip, and full of wit, RANGO may be one of the best filmsof the year, animated or live action. I rate it a high +2 on the -4 to+4 scale or 8/10.Film Credits: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1192628/What others are saying: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/rango-2011/Mark R. This animation is a great way to introduce children to the classicwestern theme. The characters are interesting and the plot is strong. The viewer gets a sense of how dry and desolate the west can be alongwith the harsh struggle for existence. Depp was a perfect choice forthe main character, but the Clint Eastwood character could have lookeda little more authentic. The film also lacks the kind of polish thatcould have made it a truly great Western. The moral theme is clear andsolid, but the film lacks sufficient poignancy to become a classic.Still, it is a great family movie.I plan to purchase the DVD and put it with my Westerns collection. Ilook forward to watching it many times with the grandchildren.

I went to go see this movie with my family and I definitely enjoyed itmore than I thought I would. I mean, don't get me wrong I love JohnnyDepp and all, but looked to me like this movie just wouldn't live up tohis reputation. I was wrong. The storyline is very well put together, with just enough comedy that's understandable for younger children andjust enough action to keep you entertained without having to make therating PG-13. The character of Rango very much showed traits of JackSparrow, probably Depp's most well known character from Pirates of theCaribbean, and was definitely appealing and easy to relate to for theaudience (we all want to feel like a hero sometimes!). What blew meaway though was the absolutely incredible animation! The charactersseem so lifelike and not even the simplest detail is ever forgotten ineach scene. Overall, it's a great movie for all ages and I recommendseeing it on your next trip to the theater!

This review is from: Rango (DVD) My husband and I watched Rango for some lite comic relief. We were sadly disappointed! Hideous, nauseatingly ugly characters. Nonsensical story line. We can't imagine what age group this "cartoon" was designed to reach? Barf. It's going in the trash.

Gore Verbinksi, best known for the Pirates of the Caribbean series, takes his first step into the weird and wonderful world of animationand he's taking them with the very weird and the exceedingly wildJohnny Depp. They come together once again to bring life to Rango, ananimated Western for kids which for some bizarre reason is also a dramaabout one chameleon's (Depp) identity crisis. These two elements don'talways sit comfortably together but it's definitely an interestingexperiment. The film opens with Rango performing a monologue in which he revealsthat he's struggling with feeling lost and alone in what appears to bea dreamlike desert where his only friends are a wind-up fish toy and aheadless Barbie. In reality, he's a pet chameleon travelling in theback of a car which, thanks to a pesky armadillo, is thrown from thecar and left to his own devices. This is one of the best openings to afilm I've ever seen, almost on par with Toy Story 3 and that's goingsome. The sun hits Rango's terrarium as it flies through the air like alight at the end of the tunnel signals freedom, sweet and terriblefreedom. He wanders through the desert, evading hungry birds and heat exhaustionuntil he comes across a prim and proper lizard named Beans (IslaFisher). Lamenting the mysterious lack of water in her Old West town ofDirt, she decides to bring Rango along who quickly realises that hefinally has the chance to be somebody. Ironically, blending in doesn'tcome easy to this chameleon and he stands out in the town like, well, abright green chameleon and so he decides to embellish certain factsabout his life, starting with the fact that he's a talented gunslinger. After making a few outlandish claims to the locals and impressing themin the saloon with some dumb luck, he's named as the new Sheriff. The mayor Tortoise John (Ned Beatty) now relies on Rango to save thetown from a permanent drought by solving the mystery of the dwindlingwater supply. Taking a posse of locals with him, Rango sets out on awild adventure to finally become the brave Sheriff he's pretending tobe. The film pays tribute to a wide variety of film (Fear and Loathing InLas Vegas and Man With No Name) without being as referential as a Shrekmovie. These moments are more amusing than they are distracting andgive the film a postmodern edge that blends neatly with the charm ofthe Old West. Despite some high points, the story is the films weakestlink. For example, around the 1hr 20min mark, Rango wanders back intothe desert having been exposed as a fraud to his friends and loveinterest, Beans. He has an existential crisis and comes across thebarely mentioned and not at all important Spirit of the West  a thinlyveiled impression of Clint Eastwood. Though it's somewhat amusing foradults to see a CGI Clint dispensing advice to Rango, it's utterlyunnecessary and drags out what should have been a more focused storyfor kids.Moving from the Con column to the Pro, Depp does some of his best workhere and showcases comedic timing we had only glimpsed at before, creating a classic Western character with contemporary eccentricities.Bill Nighy adds real flavour as deranged gunslinger Rattlesnake Jakewhile Ray Winstone is completely miscast as cockney lizard Bad Bill Âthis casting makes absolutely no sense. The real crowning glory however, has to be the superb animation. Thecolours and shading are very sophisticated and the textures andelements are perfect, provided by Industrial Light and Magic with theirfirst animation. We don't often see this quality outside of Pixarmovies and I don't think it'd be going too far to say that Rango willgive them a run for their money at next year's Oscars. Yes, it's unevenbut there's still a lot to like about Rango and at its best, it'squirky and entertaining, at worst, it's predictable and a too long. Ican live with that.

I saw this film last week here in Europe. It has absolutely plastic and detailed graphics, but this is not what Iwant to emphasize. What struck me with this picture is that it does not only have amessage, but it can even deliver that. The revolutionary parts for mewere the extremely well constructed surrealistic scenes. Withoutspoiling the story I would praise "religious awe" or "lettingeverything go". Some will never understand them, but for me those madenot only the evening but the week.A gem among the glass pearls coming from the States.

Movie reviewer Roger Moore panned "Rango" in the Saturday March 5thAtlanta Journal Constitution. I had seen the trailer and was impressedwith the spot on animation and characters, so I went anyway. I'm glad Iignored Moore's negativity. He seemed to stew in his own juices overthe fact that the movie is not necessarily geared toward children. Andit's not geared toward children. Who said it had to be just becauseit's animated? Dare I say that Rango is a great animated movie. As Isaid the animation is perfect. The characters are in turn cute, precious, nasty and down right ugly. I marveled at how an animator canevoke so much emotion in a computer created character with a voice. Itis amazing. I must add that I did not take a small child to this movie,I'm 63, and I would not advise that others do. While some of thecharacters are cute and cuddly, some scenes are scary. But that's whyit's rated PG. In addition the movie is funny, makes an environmentalpoint, is at times poignant, sad, gross and hokey. And if you don'tlike Jonny Depp, who is the voice of Rango, don't worry you don't haveto look at him and he does a credible job as a lizard. I recommend ithighly.
