A young boy named Milo gains a deeper appreciation for his mom after Martians come to Earth to take her away.
Visitor Reviews: (20)troy-manatunga 15 May 2012
When Spielberg discussed themes of awakening and relationships betweenman and machine in ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE back in early 2000/01, Ifelt sharp needles having a go at my heart when young David longed forhis mothers love. Move in time a few years forward and enter 2011 I amlost for words again. MARS NEEDS MOMS just came out of nowhere and tookme by surprise at the very least expected moments. Discussing themessimilar to AI and ET this animation is a must watch for all ages. Forthose few who have out grown animations and consider themselves highlyprogressive and mature audiences , well tough luck for you, it's a yourloss. I always believe we all have a child in us all and at times weneed to feed that juvenile hunger.Milo just the same as we all were when we were younger (that's a longtime ago for some of us, not so much for me!) hated doing house holdchores. I myself can proudly say I have boycotted every singlehousehold chore that came my way and so has my brother, which goes tosay that obviously the parents had a lot of work on their shoulders.Well Milo is not that lucky since his mom has him on a very short leashand makes sure he is well disciplined. (Does that say something aboutme?) She is in fact super good at what she does that she is being headhunted by the Martians to come train their army of Nanny-bots to lookafter the little Martians. The Martians have evolved quite so that theydo not believe in families, but it's more like a military controlledplanet where the Female Martians run the show and the males arebanished. So much for male domination! The Martians mummy-nap Milos'mom. Milo in an attempt to save her gets stuck in the landing gear ofthe ship and ends up in a space trip to mars. Clearly the Martians wantonly the mom and Milo is not welcomed very well, instead he was shot atand chased until a mysterious voice guides Milo to safety. Milo uniteswith his savior Gribble and soon is prepared to head out on a missionto save his mum. All because he "loves his mum" What is animation? Brad Bird once said that animation is not a genre.Animation is a form of art. In animation (this wondrous form of art)any genre of movie may be brought to life. May it be comedy, thriller,or action it can be done. I personally rightly agree with what BradBird perceives. Walt Disney Productions along with ImagemoversProductions twists this form of art and uses a different approach inthe creative department. It is not the first time that Imagemoversproductions has experimented this technology. A Christmas CAROL and THEPOLAR EXPRESS both have used this motion capture technology. Realactors are suited in motion capture suits and cameras attached to theirbody along with sensors connected to their faces in the likes of dots. All these hardware will work in harmony and capture every movement ofthe actors and then is edited with the needed effects. Seth Green whoplays Milo is not child, however this technology successfully enablesan adult to do the acting and the editors do the rest. Prettyimpressive and well done! It's a very good decision made by directorSimon Wells who returns to the directors' seat after quite a longbreak. There is not visible flaw in the voicing and the plot. Seth Green, JoanCusak, Dan Fogler and Elisabeth Harnois put on a very good show. DanFogler and Elisabeth Harnois in fact keep the humor on a regular flowand maintain a balance on the whole sci-fi approach. Why this movie wasnot well accepted when it opened at the box office mostly can bemeasured with it heavy moments. As an animation the younger viewers maynot ideally grasp the concept of the themes of awakening andrelationships. I am unable to zero in on anymore contributors for thelow demand. As the saying goes "You win some you lose some"Title: Mars Need Moms Directed by: Simon Wells Starring: Seth Green,Dan Fogler, Elisabeth Harnois and John Cusack Rated: PG for sci-fiaction and peril Rating: 06/10 88 Minutes

Thankfully we got this movie from the library and did not spend any money to rent/buy it. My 11 year old son and 7 year old daughter watched the whole thing and their final commentary was that it was "weird and a little boring, but OK." They both said it's not one they would want to watch again.

Aside from the technical and artistic qualities of this movie, I thinkthe main message is plainly pro family while attempting to comment onthe condition of the contemporary family (or lack there of) in America.I never read the reviews for Happy Feet, but I would venture to saythat people who ripped on Mars Needs Moms might be the same who thoughtHappy Feet was better.Mars Needs Moms fails to agree with many peoples view of parenthood andthe value of a woman. I think people had a harder time with the maintheme more than anything. This is why I liked the movie. It isn't aregurgitation of what is popular. Instead it challenges the status quoand raises serious questions about it's values.I thought that it did a good job at championing the role of motherhoodby pointing out that the thing that women (in general) do best and evenbetter than men (in general) is nurturing and guiding children.Something that we desperately need today. Not that mothering is theONLY thing woman are best at, but something they can do unlike anyother.Okay, Mars may not have the same kind of pizazz as Happy Feet, but itis definitely entertaining and adventuresome. I thought the effects andthe acting were good. Joan Cusack and Seth Green were authentic andanimated. Grimble was a bit obnoxious, but Ki and the master martiancharacter were really good and entertaining. Also, I found this movierefreshing in that it doesn't apologize for championing a role thatisn't as valued today as it once was.

This review is from: Mars Needs Moms (DVD) "Mars Needs Moms" turned out to be MUCH more than we thought it would be. WOW! What a ride! It was exhilarating from the start. The movie had humor, action, emotion, and lots of good-feelings. The message was strong... as well as many other adult messages that could be points of conversation later. We all loved the movie and want to see it again and again. Very well thought-out and produced. We are surprised it didn't do better in the theaters. By the way, seeing it on a big screen would be optimal as the imagery is awesome. Regardless, a great flick for the entire family :)

"Mars Needs Moms" will never be mistaken for "Apocalpyse Now" much less "Toy Story" but it IS an entertaining diversion. It seems Simon Wells (the great grandson of H.G. Wells) can't escape his past or the subjects of his grandfather's writing; "Mars" makes the second time that Wells has worked on a project that is somehow tied into his great-grandfather's work (he also directed the recent live action version of "The Time Machine").It seems that good moms are being kidnapped by Martians to raise their newborns and young hero Milo (Seth Dusky--motion capture performance by Seth Green)gets whisked away with his mom (Joan Cusack)to the Red Planet and he must figure out a way to get both of them back to Earth. With the assistance of Reagan era secret astronaut Gribble (Dan Fogler) Milo must stop the Martians from doing something evil and wrong to his mom."Mars Needs Moms" looks positively stunning in HD. Colors pop and there's a level of detail that the BD disc provides nice resolution for. Audio is presented in 7.1 DTS-HD and sounds terrific as well. It's too bad that the film didn't get a bigger audience but that had more to do with marketing and less with the quality of the film itself. The special features are quite nice as well. We get a commentary track featuring director Wells, Green and Fogler (clearly recorded before the film premiered because they seem quite optimistic about the future of the film as a Disney franchise)."Life on Mars" focuses on the motion capture shooting that provided the basis for the animation."Martian 101" allows us to find out about the creation of the Martian language and culture for the film. "Fun with Seth" takes us behind-the-scenes on the set letting us see the cast goof off a bit.We also get deleted scenes and an alternate beginning in various states of completion with an introduction by director Simon Wells. It's a pity that "Mars Needs Moms" met with public indifference--if it had been marketed better it might have found it's audience as it's an entertaining film although not quite in the class of the work that Pixar does (although it does have a much darker story element than we would normally see in a Pixar flick).

The essential message of this film is something I've long held: a well-adjusted society requires families, moms and dads who raise children. Since this film could be understood on a number of levels, I found this Disney film was a welcome departure from the somewhat left-leaning feature length cartoons which have come out in the past. The animation was excellent, the voice acting was great, and, while the plot had some flaws, it was an enjoyable film.

Well i have just watched this movie with my kids (8, 6 and 3 years old)and they all enjoyed it (all in it's own way).Wonderful imaginary world with splendid effects attracted them even theyoungest one. The story attracted the older two (they kept askingquestions all along we watched it :D). I have seen their breathlessattention to what's gonna happen with mom of that kid, will he save heror not.Movie is useful, it's not mindless cartoon or movie just for fun. Itsends strong message of how family is important, how mothers areimportant. Your kids will realize that message too.Technically this movie is perfect. I am wondering why bad score onIMDb.

Important note: if you are going to make a film whose moral is that mechanical objects can never replace people (or Martians), try not to make exactly that mistake.

This review is from: Mars Needs Moms (DVD) I'm not crazy about this story line but my little man (2 yrs old) loves it. He watches it almost every day - when we aren't watching Woody & Buzz.

We rented this movie and watched it twice in two days! We had low expectations but were pleasantly surprised by this movie. We have a four year old and six year old and they were both highly entertained. Especially my six year old son. I'm not sure I understand the negative reviews here but as a Mom who was appalled at the language and innuendo in Rango (for her childrens' sake), I thought this movie was very CLEAN and decent and had great moral lessons (especially about disobedience and the consequences). I also thought it was rather emotional because I could identify easily with the hurt mother...and my six year old could easily identify with the little boy who had said the hurtful things. And Gribble was awesome!! Smurf-berry crunch and He-man, indeed. THAT brought back old memories ;) Anyway. I know not everyone EVER agrees on anything, but we will be buying this movie in the future for our FAMILY movie nights. And that's something I can't say about many movies these days, Disney or not.

All I can say is ugh! What has happened to Disney? There have been somebad movie ideas from Disney before (just watch Bolt or Hunchback if youdon't believe me) but this movie is BAD. I don't expect a Main Streetparade at Walt Disney World for this one any time soon. The trailer alone should have kept me away from the theater butsometimes you just have to take one for the team...I should have stayed away -- and I think Disney should have stuck withwhat they do best which are fairy tale fantasy stories such as Tangledor Toy Story and leave the Sci-Fi story telling to people who willactually make an interesting story.Rent and watch Planet 51 and save your money.Try again Disney (and hire better marketing folks and writers beforeyou do).

I saw it with two of my little cousins and i was not looking forward toit atall after hearing how it bombed in box office and everyonesreviews were really bad. It turns out I kinda liked it, the animationwas very cool in 3D, which it must be seen in 3D or not nearly as cool.It was simple family friendly entertainment, very vibrant and originalwith very creative digital technology behind it. It was fast paced andkept the kiddies smilin'. More than I was expecting definitely, andoverrall not that bad, I would definitely recommend if you are lookingfor a film to bring some kids to. As a small bonus at the end theyshows behind the scenes of how they filmed it with live action actors, very cool.

I wanted to go to cinema to see this movie, but for many reasons, Icouldn't. I was tempted by the fact that is an IMAX 3D Disney Animationand I am a big fan of animated movies. I finally watched on DVD and Ihad the big surprise to find that this is, by far, the WORST movie madeby Disney. They should've stick to what they do best (for example:Princess & the Frog, etc.) not this lame script and weird animatedcharacters. Too bad...Disney, please reconsider your decision in canceling all your beautifulanimated productions with beautiful fairy tales. That kind ofproductions had made you famous and Richie-rich :)

I guess I'm in the 'I liked it' camp. Frankly I am perplexed at thenegative press and hatred thrown at this film. It's a Disney movie. That should tell you something. It will be a movie that adheres to somepretty strict rules. The movie will have to appeal to the broadestfamily audience possible. It will not have a lot of controversialsocial commentary. The conflicts in the movie will be resolved withoutbloodshed or body parts being flung about and the movie will have ahappy ending. So what did you expect? Aside from that I thought all theactors did a fine job with their parts and I liked what was donecreating the martian world. I'm sorry many people didn't find anylikable characters. I liked them. The humans looked and acted like realpeople to me. I found Ki, the martian tagger, especially appealing. Why? Well, I don't want to deconstruct it too much. Let's just say Iwish I'd known somebody with her personality when I was younger. As toall the nit picking, well yeah, I did that too. If they put in all the'how did they eat, shower, go to the can, and buy food stuff the moviewould have been 6 hours long! That's what you use your imagination forafter the movie is over. It's too bad this movie didn't get anyrespect. It really deserved better.

This one actually was very smart movie, its not one of best movies butalso its not so bad as people claims it to be - its actually fine, average family movie as Disney makes them most of time . This movie is great for Moms and Sons as this movies title says ...First thing whats amaze you is outstanding animation (Yes but itsalmost to good they could just use real actors with CGI for thismovie). And also i get message and idea what Mars needs moms sent to me thismovie is very intelligent and i like when i get message from movies butunfortunately nowadays people deteriorate with lame things and losingtheir intelligence so probably thats why this movie is rated so lowpeople just don't get what this movie try to tell them .And finally this movie touched me very emotional i almost cried in theend ! Rango left me without feelings and i was bored but Mars needs momstouched me emotionality , my lips never moved watching Rango cause itwas very unfunny and also it had bad, terrible, sex, suicidal and eviljokes. Rango was to violent & boring slow western movie with to creepyCGI characters. I feel now so bad i suggested my friend to go see RANGO with kids overthe Mars needs moms!!! Rango definitely is not a movie for kids !!! Andi think soon Mars needs moms will get more views cause parents who sawRango will be mad as i am and my friend and also other parents who sawhow bad that Rango movie is will do same - even Johny Depp not savingit ....I give this movie 8/10 Animation: ** Intelligent story: ** Good ending: * Emotional: *Message: *

Every so often a bunch of kids are born on mars. The supervisor (MindySterling) has made a decision to steal moms from Earth. Their firsttarget, Milo's house. Milo after an argument not to eat his broccolifinds himself telling his mom "his life would be better off withouther". While asleep that night the Martians came and took Milo's mom. Before they could take off in their ship Milo manages to get inside theship and go to mars with them. On mars he makes a great friend with afellow human named Gribble (Dan Fogler). Willing to help them also isKI (Elisabeth Harnois). KI who is the assistant to the supervisor. It'sa mad dash for Milo and his friends to save his mom from the martians.Love the Gribble and Ki. Fun and entertaining. Milo gets a littlewhinny. A big improvement from "Polar Express" but still I think thekids are gonna think the characters are creepy. 3 ½ stars out of 5
Tom Huddleston 03 May 2012
The 'Polar Express'-style CG-meets-live-action visuals are creepy and flat, the characters are largely nonexistent and the story takes so many short cuts that it becomes meaningless...

Review from the MOM:OK -- so I gave it an excellent review for reasons that may differ fromother reviewers. First off, I'm a Mom and this movie was cute in thatit was about moms and their motherly qualities. My husband, being the dad, also liked it as it kept our interest, aswell as our children ages 3 and 8. I'm also a huge Joan Cusack fan as she adds character to... well... hercharacter. If you're looking for an entertaining story, (though it maynot be Shrek animation, or even humor as some of the scenes made mecry) then this movie is it. Get it from your local library and write your review, especially ifyou're a mom with an active 11-year-old. :) This movie was NOT thatbad!
Rob Vaux 30 April 2012
It has its heart in the right place, and earns its few moments of emotional resonance, but they don't elevate the story past the thoroughly commonplace.
Graham Young 30 April 2012
89 minutes of ... near-lifeless 'animated' characters who are constantly struggling to break through the stifling limitations of 'motion capture' technology.
