Valerie (Seyfried) is a beautiful young woman torn between two men. She is in love with a brooding outsider, Peter (Fernandez), but her parents have arranged for her to marry the wealthy Henry (Irons). Unwilling to lose each other, Valerie and Peter are planning to run away together when they learn that Valeries older sister has been killed by the werewolf that prowls the dark forest surrounding their village. For years, the people have maintained an uneasy truce with the beast, offering the creature a monthly animal sacrifice. But under a blood red moon, the wolf has upped the stakes by taking a human life. Hungry for revenge, the people call on famed werewolf hunter, Father Solomon (Oldman), to help them kill the wolf. But Solomons arrival brings unintended consequences as he warns that the wolf, who takes human form by day, could be any one of them. As the death toll rises with each moon...

Who's afraid of the Big Bad Wolf? No one who sees the specimen in Red Riding Hood, that's for sure.

"You never know what someone is capable of." After the village of Daggerhorn's peace with the warewolf is broken villagers take drastic measures to stop the bloodshed. After Father Solomon (Oldman) comes to the town and announces that the wolf by day is human and lives in the town the villagers begin to trust noone. One special girl named Valerie (Seyfried), has a unique connection to the wolf, and realizes she is the only one that can save the village. I have to admit that this is not my type of movie at all. Not being a fan of the "Twilight" movies (this movie is directed by Catherine Hardwicke, who directed the first "Twilight") I just could not get into this movie. I will admit though that being a huge Gary Oldman fan I really liked his character, being so brutal helped me enjoy it a little. This is totally geared toward the "Twilight" crowd. If you liked those movies then you will love this one. That's about all I can say. Overall I didn't enjoy this one, but many, many people will. I say B-. Would I watch again? - I will not*Also try - The Twilight Saga Movies - Twilight, New Moon & Eclipse

I don't think anyone of nominal sanity would argue that this is a greatmovie, but it isn't as bad as some of the reviews suggest. It certainlyplays a bit off the popularity of the "Twilight" movies, using avampire instead of the classic wolf, but it still is a totallydifferent story, and in broad scope faithful to the classic fairy tale.Amanda Seyfried is Valerie, arranged to be wed to Max Irons (son ofJeremy Irons) as Henry, after her older sister is found dead, apparently a victim of the vampire. Sacrafices of livestock are maderegularly by the towns people, to appease the vampire, so they aresurprised at this event. But Valerie doesn't want to marry Henry, she is in love with ShilohFernandez as Peter, even talking about striking out together to get faraway from their village. Gary Oldman as Solomon has a reputation for hunting down and killingvampires, he even has sharpened silver fingernails for such anencounter. He tells all the townspeople that the werewolf has not beenkilled, in fact he tells them it is probably one of them, a villagerthat everyone knows, who turns into a vampire at full moon. At thistime is a special time that only occurs every 13 years, a red full moonwhich means the vampire will try to bite someone to turn them into avampire also.Julie Christie is Grandmother. "tu-dumm, tu-dumm, tu-dumm..."SPOILERS: After the storyline suggests several who might be the wolf, when Valerie puts on her red cape and treks to Grandmother's house, shefinds her dad there, he is in fact the vampire. While it seemed that hekilled his own daughter in the opening scene, he had just realized thatshe was in fact not his, but the product of an affair his wife had withHenry's dad, so he killed both of them. Now he was looking for his onlydaughter, Valerie, to become a vampire. But Peter shows up in the nickof time, and Valerie had brought along the severed hand of Solomon, andused the silver fingernails to kill her dad, the vampire. However Peterhad been bitten in the battle, but in honor of his love for Valeriewould attempt to stay out of the way in the future.

Like an idiot, I came to this movie hoping that director Catherine Hardwicke might engage in a feminist interrogation of the old fairy tale.

This movie was TOTALLY horrible. The acting was bad, the writing wasbad, the casting was bad, it was boring, it made no sense, and so on.What the hell people? WHY was this made? Oh yeah to cash in on thewhole Edward/Bella dynamic. To save you time and energy: the father of the girl is the wolf. Itmakes no sense. It's as if the writers did not know when they werewriting the movie! They probably did not. They just wanted there to bea twist. How cheap. They made everyone's eyes brown so that they couldpossibly be the wolf. Avoid this movie! So stupid! I can't even writeanymore I hate it so much!

But to be fair, I came in with low expectations. For something riding the coattails of Twilight, this turned out to be surprisingly watchable. My cousin and I picked this for our bad movie night and while there is plenty of snark bait, the movie has its redeeming qualities.First of all, it's lovely. The atmosphere is dark without being dull and boring (Twilight) and the actors are nice to look at. Too much sometimes, however; Amanda Seyfried is pretty but jarringly bimbo-esque for the role and the clothes, dancing, and other things are sexy when it doesn't make sense. That's pretty standard fare for movies these days, however. I also really liked the main character (while again, I maintain that it was hard to buy Amanda Seyfried in the role), she's clever and interesting though suffers from a common problem for female protagonists these days: everyone insisting and fawning over how perfect she is (though it's revealed she's far from it, part of what makes the character more dynamic and interesting). I don't remember much about the music but I think I remember it being kind of nice, too. The ending is fittingly bittersweet. Many aspects are boring and predictable. The romantic leads are a bit generic but still kind of appealing. They did avoid a lot of love triangle cliches (quite a few cliches in general actually), which is obviously good, and Valerie's choice in the end makes sense and is very well established. The twist at the end isn't contradictory, but many may find it unsatisfying and weird (personally, I liked it but objectively there's a lot of room not to). Many expecting a horror will also be disappointed, this movie is a mystery and not scary at all. The acting isn't always solid but isn't cringe-worthy either and there are a few really good actors in this movie. There are a lot of uh, awkward parts though so you might not want to watch this with family (and no, no real sex scenes but for example a village girl 'offering herself' as pay for her jailed brother's freedom. She's a little plain and is in tears and Father Solomon just toys with her before declining her offer, it's a little hard to watch). So, this movie has its ups and downs. I'll watch it again when I'm in the mood for something in this vein but it's no classic.

Wanted to like this movie, I really did. The only good thing I can say about it is I didn't pay to see it. Gotta love gift cards. Red Riding Hood with werewolves, easy way out in my opinion. Probably would have gotten over that if the acting wasn't so damn bad, Gary Oldman is the exception but that man is good in just about everything. This fact is even more annoying since there are a lot of good actors in the movie. The people who are supposed to love each have no chemistry and the movie didn't even creep me out. I'm all for reinventing fairy tales but this one is ridiculous. The only other good thing about this, other than Gary Oldman were the sets. Everybody's tastes are different so I won't tell you not to buy it but I will tell you if you haven't seen the movie rent it first and form your own opinion. In mine it's a waste of your hard earned money.

The village looks like an Amish suburb of LA peopled by dentally-perfect specimens with Hollywood hair and rustic smocks by Donna Karan.

Red Riding Hood is so romantic tale of LOVE, its goes under the sameidea as Twilight Series was... and the most obvious is who loved theTwilight.. Love the Set in a medieval village. really like the suspenserunning after each and every character. Unlike Twilight Red Riding Hoodis more calm Director Catherine Hardwicke have done a wonderful jobafter Twilight.. Snowy and christmasy weather and atmosphere areawesome. Amanda Seyfried, Shiloh Fernandez and Max Irons have donegreat job too.. Lukas Haas have done good performance. Well if Icompare Red Riding Hood with Twilight then must say that there issomething missing. There is one thing which i could not understand isthat Valerie doubt on peter and she hurt her childhood love with Knifeas she knew that whatever happens Peter can't hurt her.. In there kindof Bilnd faith Love Stories Lover just don't doubt each other. Butstill I can watch this film over and over again.

If you like "Twilight", then you will love this movie also. At first I thought it would be like "Curse of the Golden Flower", but nah, it was good, just enough color, good story.

Despite the ill-advised advertising, this is not a horror film or a Twilight knock-off. It's a mystery, and a good one with fine acting, pace, and ambience.

I watched Orphan a while back and did not realize Red Riding Hood waswritten by the same screen writer until looking for more by DavidJohnson. I'm hoping to see more from him in the future as I like theway he incorporates life lessons into what I've seen from him thus far.Red Riding Hood is for us women, the story of a young girl trying tocome to terms with what and who is attacking her family. Trying todecide what is best for her while coming to terms with the fact thather family may not be who she thinks they always were. It's very darkand psychological so if you are into action just for the sake of actiondef not a movie for you. A+++ I love it and hope for more.

Red Riding Hood is a fantasy fairy tale with a twist of Twilight, but it doesn't quite come together, despite some striking images and a strong performance from Seyfried.

I feel sorry for Gary Oldman. He had to try to act with these talentless hacks. I've rarely seen so much bad acting in one movie. Even Gary had trouble showing his true talent with this poorly written script.

I must admit I wasn't expecting much from this retelling of the classic fairy tale. After all, its director is Catherine Hardwicke, she of the TWILIGHT atrocity. And it surely will only appeal to lovestruck teenage girls.Lo and behold, RED RIDING HOOD is a sumptuous well crafted mystery with gorgeous settings and camera work. It's surprisingly good and far superior to the TWILIGHT franchise.Wisely eschewing "LITTLE" in its title, the movie throws several red herrings in revealing the werewolf's identity.....and I didn't see it coming.Hardwick also avoids the expected gimmicky transformation and gives us instead a huge vicious wolf. She also manages to use the classic WHAT BIG -----lines in clever fashion. The wintry landscape is beautiful in showcasing the vividness of the cape and in framing Grandma's deceptively inviting cottage.Amanda Seyfried is good as the innocent Valerie and Shiloh Fernandez/Max Irons suitable as her suitors. But its the seasoned vets who steal the movie. Oscar winner Julie Christie still radiantly beautiful as Grandma; Oscar nominees Gary Oldman's eccentric werewolf hunter and Virginia Madsen's lusty mother of our heroine; and underrated Billy Burke as the tortured father. And let's not overlook Lukas Haas' turn as the subserviant monk.RED RIDING HOOD is a wickedly entertaining film and I was pleasantly surprised.

This re-imagining of the centuries-old fairy tale "Little Red Cap" opens with a lush and beautiful flight over a mountainous medieval landscape dotted with castles, mills and vast forests. The camera finally descends to show us a picturesque village plucked from a storybook, quickly introducing us to the film's heroine Valerie and her handsome suitor Peter. The lovers' happiness is quickly shattered with the discovery of a body - Valerie's sister, slain by "The Wolf" which has long stalked their tiny village. Despite the dreamy, rich visuals, Red Riding Hood's first act feels rushed, sacrificing character and narrative flow to reach the first inevitable encounter with the `Big Bad Wolf'. In some ways the decision pays off however, because it is here the film finds its stride. The stormy love story and romantic rivalries which weave through the film are nothing new, and we never doubt which brooding hunk our heroine will choose. This all takes a backseat however to the dual growing menace of the hungry werewolf and the equally fanatical priest who arrives to destroy the beast. Soon it becomes clear that the werewolf has a special interest in Valerie, which leads the village to brand her as a witch. The zealous werewolf-hunter decides to use her as bait, leading to a final encounter with the beast.Red Riding Hood is something of a mixed bag, with an engaging story marred by occasionally hackneyed dialogue and bland performances. Even-so, the film somehow manages to rise above its shortcomings, leading to a climax which is both exciting and unexpected. While I may be biased, the true selling point for this was the werewolf itself - A gigantic, four-footed, black beast which talks, schemes, and seems somehow less villainous than the cruel inquisitor who arrives to slay him. The resolution of Red Riding Hood's `whodunnit' mystery may be a bit bizarre, but it's final moments offer a sort-of twisted `happy ending' that sent me home with a big smile on my face.

I've reviewed this title on a few different sites and on all of them I've tried to warn people to stay away from this movie. This is one of the most unpleasant experiences I've had watching a movie in a long time.I always try to be fair when reviewing any title, so to be fair the setup for this movie is rather pleasant twist on the Red Riding Hood story that we all know. In this version she lives in a village that's been plagued by a wolf for a couple generations. The look of the town is rather pleasant even though it look completely fake. It's rare to find a movie these days that has no dialogue at all, and by that I mean not a single word is spoken that is not necessary to push the plot painfully along. Now I know a lot of people will disagree with my view on this movie and that's fine. However if you are on the fence about renting this or buying this I have just one word for you. Don't.

If you're a Twilight fan, you may feel as though you've already seen this. And if you're not, well, why would you be interested in something like this at all?
Alise_shenle 05 May 2012
I should have known that the Twilight director could direct nothinggood. The movie started with the same old forest scene with voice-overlike the Twilight movies. Then, the actors come out in their prettyunrealistic dresses and hair. The main characters are just for eyecandy. Peter tries too hard to act cool like Edward Cullen, Valeriejust looks horny and Henry is dull. The plot is also dead stupid,c'mon, obviously the werewolf is one of Valerie's family! And thestupid father Solomon made things worse. He should just round upeveryone in the church and count who's not there in the morning to findout the real werewolf. Instead, he thought he's superman and there wasso much bloodshed. This movie is stupid and cheesy and it's not evenscary. Watch the Brothers Grimm movie instead if you like fairy tales.

'RED RIDING HOOD': Two Stars (Out of Five) The first in an upcoming Hollywood trend of dark re-imaginings tochildren's fairy tales (there are three 'Snow White' films in theworks). This one is a very loose adaptation of 'Little Red Riding Hood'(and it bars very little resemblance to the actual fairy tale). It'smore so inspired by the books 'The Uses of Enchantment' by author BrunoBettelheim in which he uses Freudian psychology to analyze fairy tales. It's directed by Catherine Hardwicke, who is most well known fordirecting the first 'TWILIGHT' film but also directed 'THIRTEEN','LORDS OF DOGTOWN' and 'THE NATIVITY STORY' (which were all much betterfilms). Here she falls even further from her former grace by producingmore teen angst dribble. The film is written, very poorly, by DavidJohnson and stars Amanda Seyfried. The movie's set in the medieval village of Daggerhorn, wheretownspeople are haunted by a viscous werewolf that lives in the woods.Seyfried plays Valerie, a young woman who's arranged to marry ablacksmith's son, Henry (Max Irons), in order to pay off the debt ofher father, Cesaire (Billy Burke, who also co-starred in Hardwicke's'TWILIGHT' as the father of the heroine). Of course she's torn betweentwo bad acting pretty boys and is in love with a woodcutter named Peter(Shiloh Fernandez). Valerie and Peter plan to run off with each otherbut their plans are halted when Valerie's sister is murdered by thewerewolf. A well known hunter, Father Solomon (Gary Oldman), arrives intown with several followers and locks it down. He's had experiencedealing with werewolves and wreaks religious havoc on the town whiletrying to kill the deadly beast.Seyfried is good in the lead role, Burke isn't bad as usual and Oldmanreally hams it up as the movie's villain. There's also a nicesupporting turn from the legendary Julie Christie as Valerie'sgrandmother. The rest of the cast is pretty bad, especially the twoleading men who also have no chemistry with Seyfried. The dialogue ismostly nauseating, the directing is pretty poor and for the most partit looks and feels like a 'Lifetime' TV movie.. The cinematography isdecent though and the film has a nice creepy mood to it at times. Thewerewolf scenes aren't bad and it's definitely better at it's horrorelements than the 'TWILIGHT' movies but for the most part it's justmore of the same. Hardwicke can do so much better than this 'sell out'crap.Watch our review show 'MOVIE TALK' at:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffxjYiwLUko
