Confusing

Me thought that movie be about someone punching Madonna in face. Me must have been wishing that the case. Oh well. Me throw movie in garbage and Madonna probably stink worse than garbage. Ah-so.

You've never seen a movie like Sucker Punch. And depending on your entertainment preferences, you may not want to.

Ridiculous, Incompetent

So dumb it compelled me to make an IMDb account to write this review...I figured that a fantasy/action movie where schoolgirl babes fightdragons and reanimated Nazis would be light, mindless entertainment. But this flick is straight up boring. There was no pacing, it was (Ithink a few have pointed this out before) just like a video game. Oneach level, the girls have to steal some object. Each time, Baby Dolldistracts the bad guys with a burlesque dance so the other chicks cangrab the it. Each time, the dance takes them one level deeper in thedream, where a dude first briefs them on their mission, which each timeis an ultra-saturated slow-mo action sequence fighting some magicalenemy. (Besides dragons and Nazis, I think they also fight giantsamurais.) They go back to the top-level dream, of course havingsucceeded. Repeat four times. Wake from the original dream, somethingsomething, done. There isn't even any suspense or dramatic irony aboutthe characters' relation to the dream world.I kind of like the Watchowski-brothers-meets-tom-of-Finland,fetish-light motif of Zack Snyder's movies. But in the end they are alljust garbage. Totally cynical, lazy and disappointing.

More than I expected

To be frank, I only expected mindless B-movie action an graphics withscantily clad girls and phantasmagoria of kitchen-sink approach tofantasy battle scenes.I got that, but there was something more. While there was a videogame-like linearity and predictability to the plot, there were somesurprises for me which made it a great experience. The cinematicbattles (and the movie itself) feels like a mash-up of One Flew overThe Cookoo's Nest, Matrix, Kill Bill, Lord of The rings and Heavy Metalall at once, transformed into a video game first and then onto the bigscreen. The fact that it worked so well on a visual level and actuallyfit together was interesting. However, it's the overall idea was what got me: the idea of escaping tothe world of fantasies while the world around you is unpleasant, andthe interplay between the two. I see this movie as a contrast betweenthe reality and the escapism of dreams and imagination, and how, ultimately, the real life takes upper hand. Granted, it could beimplemented better without being a Kill-Bill-type movie, but that wasan unexpected dimension in a movie of this type. What probably got me most were the little details in the dreams whichcorresponded to the real-world details in a non-obvious way. While thegirls were directly embedded into the dreams, it takes some thought torealize that the wise old guy is also a character from real life, andwho that character is. Likewise, in the final scene you need to figureout which part is taking place in the imagination, and what that tellsyou about the events.I could probably draw a parallel with films like Le Magnifique, where awriter played by Belmondo embeds real-life people he interacts withinto his fiction, although that would be quite a stretch. The movie would be appealing to video game-loving young guys, and, infact, would probably make a great video game. It is deliberatelyover-the-top, male-oriented, with all the pretty girls, weaponry andstunning visuals. However, I think there is a deeper back story about a weak girl who isoverpowered by the circumstances of life around her, which. This story, which is easily overlooked due to abundance of visuals, which makesthis movie stand out and work for a wide audience. In short: I came for the girls, swords and zeppelins, but came out withOne Flew Over the Cuckoo's nest.

"You will be unprepared"

"Zach, we have to think of something!" "I know, I know. It's just hard. My mind is in all sorts of places. Twosuccessful movies aren't going to do any good. We need these people'sexpectations to be at the max. We need to create something like noother. A masterpiece.""Well, sorry to say sir, but none of your films are worthy of beingcalled a masterpiece, although they're good entertainment.""Listen to me very carefully, I KNOW THAT. That's the problem. Peoplefound 300 just another escapism film. At least it was good.""On a good note, people love your sense of style. Maybe clashingtogether your idea of style from 300 and sense of story-telling fromWatchmen, maybe you can successfully make a masterpiece." "Watchmen was based of a comic book. I copied most of the dialog fromthe book.. I have no sense of story-telling. All I have is style.""Well, maybe we can bring in a few clichés. I mean, critics aren'tgoing to love your film, but audience is what we need.""Your right. I mean.. the audience LOVES hot chicks, don't they? We'lljust create a simple story with no meaning and put a little hot chicksin there. The critics will whine, but no cares for them." "Well they do love creativity. Your sense of style can lead to somecreativity. How bout a story placed in a mental institution." "Your right! Hot chicks in a mental institution. People will buy itsince it's not clichéd. But we need something else.. We need a story." "Listen to me. I know your not the greatest story-teller, and most ofyour ideas are plagiarized. But listen to me! We can add the hotchicks, steal a few clichés, but instead of creating a story.. Howabout we just disguise something as a story? I know it sounds sillybut.. How bout we put your stylishness and your creativity into somebig, loud action sequences? To create the effect, we just place somegood music too. People will buy it as an artistic film, while all it isis action. Critics will be trying to find deeper meaning, while ticketswill be sold to all the horny teenagers and action buffs. It's perfect,it's a masterpiece no one will suspect." "Your a genius. This is a movie no one will be prepared for. And thatsounds like the perfect tag line. Thank you!" "Wow, thank you Zach Snyder! I hope I can collaborate with you. Soundslike I can put a little flair into the movie too." "Yeah, sorry dude, but your fired. Bye."1/10.

It's not bad!

I just watched this at the cinema and had no expectations. The girlslook well though, the costumes are worth a few points alone. Besidesthe eye candy, the movie is entertaining, the special effects are goodand you find yourself not too bothered whether or not it makes anylogical sense.I had no previous experience with the comic/graphic novel and I knowthis can influence some peoples perceptions of film adaptations. If you intend on watching this, just relax and don't question it toomuch, the action is good and I particularly enjoyed the soundtrack!Seven Stars.

The hybrid of game play and film

If film is about imagination and exploring life through a visualrepresentation of one persons intention then Sucker punch is a film.It marries complex game play where you can feel the challenges and thevisceral achievement of completing each level, even the rhythm matchesthat of playing an adventure game. The game play immersion allows the complete belief in the visual artthat someone had to imagine prior to creation on film. You look forward to the story telling through the imagination of thelead character and this adds to the sense of escapism, it gives youpermission to suspend judgement and experience the art because, at theback of the story you know it is happening in someone else's mind. The writers tread a fine line between to much, which would tip theviewer over the edge into non belief and the joy of experiencing scenesthat you accept only after recovering from them.Something happens to us as we grow up scary movies no longer scare us,love stories no longer make us blush and super hero's no longer have uswanting to wear their costumes and jump fences. This movie took me to the time that I miss when it was easy for me tobelieve in the story despite its unrecognizable place in reality.

One of the worst films I have ever seen.

This is one of the worst films I have ever seen in my entire life.I snuck into it because I didn't want to chance spending money on it.I don't want to spend more time talking about it because that wouldwaste more of my life, which I apparently value more than the peoplewho worked on this movie.Terry Gilliam should find a pretext to sue him for the insulting"Brazil" references. That's like having a Martha Graham routinereferenced in a chlamydias prostitute's lapdance.Scott Glenn once said that Vertical Limit was his most fulfilling movieexperience...so there's obvs something wrong with him...the rest ofthese people, especially Jena Malone and Carla Gugino, have to think alittle harder about their position in life.

Interesting Music Video

This review is from: Sucker Punch (Two-Disc Extended Edition) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) Only by the loosest of definitions does Sucker Punch qualify as a film. At 120 minutes, it comes in second to "Across the Universe" as the longest music video of the past decade. If you know what you are getting into ahead of time, you are likely to enjoy this movie a whole lot more than if you were expecting some more serious storytelling. The over-stylized filming combined with Zack Snyder's superfluous and incessant use of slow motion make Sucker Punch a tedious experience. Remember, this is the same director that recently gave us "300" and "Watchmen", and with his latest instalment he one again proves that you can extend a minuscule plot into a full-length motion picture by simply slowing down the high speed camera. If you like sexy girls in skimpy outfits whooping odd-looking bad guys with a variety of vicious-looking weapons, then I highly recommend this movie; it certainly delivers in this aspect. On the other hand, if you are seeking something a little less superficial, then this is one film you should definitely skip.

The concept is intriguing but the execution is fatiguing: The CG action set pieces are so weightlessly unreal and devoid of suspense, they're boring.

The Elephant in a Skimpy Costume

A young girl named Baby Doll in a mental asylum is scheduled to undergo a lobotomy. She retreats into her imagination, along with other residents of the asylum, and plots an adventurous escape.Director Zack Synder is a genius when it comes to design. His films 300 and Watchmen are rich, visual marvels, though Watchmen was a mishap when it came to storyline. Watch a trailer of Sucker Punch and it's clear Snyder knows his strengths; he has stuck with delivering fantastic, arresting graphics to the screen. But while this may seem an uber-cool, surreal flick, note the elephant in the room: the young age of the characters. The film is cast with a bevy of attractive, young actresses decked out in sleek, skimpy costumes designed to highlight their sexuality. Clips and stills from the film also emphasize the overt sexuality of the production. This may not seem like much to modern audiences, but stop and think about this for a moment. There is a definite pedophilic vibe to the whole production---the lead character's name is Baby Doll for a reason. She is committed to the asylum by her wicked step-father and is described in all of the marketing material as being a "young girl." The director, himself, referred to this film as "Alice in Wonderland with machine guns"---but Alice was a young girl. Why hasn't Snyder been held accountable, even questioned about his using underage female characters in an highly sexualized and violent film? How is the sensationalism of this production going to further erode morality within our culture---to the further detriment of what should be one of our society's greatest treasures: our young women?Baby Doll escapes into a fantasy world she has created in her own mind. Which is more real to her---the fantasy or the horrors of reality? While fantasy is always fun to watch, it's a great delivery system for worldview. We often find the fake world of the film to be presented as comparable or even superior to the real world. Then comes the eventual questioning of which world is actually real (think The Matrix). This blurring of the line between reality and fantasy promotes, often subconsciously, the idea that our world is defined not by established rules and shared experiences, but by the perceptions of the individual. If there are no shared experiences, there is no shared morality or expectations. Again, man is left to fend for himself. He defines the universe as he sees fit, and his moral beliefs become situational rather than stabilizing.-- Review co-authored with film critic Scott Nehring ([...]). Story, sexy, and action promises broken

"A special effect is a tool; a means of telling a story. A specialeffect without a story is a pretty boring thing." – George Lucas.I'll let that soak in for a quick second. Friday night marked the startof a great Belgian beer festival near a new (to me) Regal theater. Ihad a few awesome beers with my wife and then, feeling pretty good, wewent to see the movie. Unfortunately for us there was also a crack-headseeing the movie and he was feeling pretty good (read: chatty) too.Back to Mr. Lucas. While he has proved his own point with episodes onethrough three, I generally disagree. I love movies like District B:13and Day After Tomorrow. They are characterized by a lack of plot andlots of great action/visual effects. It's craft beer for the eyeballs.Sucker Punch's trailer promised viewers two things: boobies and actionwith the possibility of some of the decent storytelling that ZackSnyder has exhibited in the past. It was the story of a girl in amental hospital that reverts into this war-like inner world in order todeal with that is going on around her. Escape from a crazy nazi-fueleddream. I am behind this film in a big way. What I failed to notice from the trailer was the mental worldin-between the crazy house and the crazy nazi world. The time where sheimagines herself trapped in a cabaret/brothel makes up a good 80% ofthe film. This world is not filled with action or much sexy. It's justa lot of overly dramatic girls making broad statements about freedom, self, and how everything is impossible or not. The crack-head vocallyapproved whenever something touched his drugged up soul. "I losteveryone I loved. And then they locked me away. With no where to hidefrom the pain," Baby Doll says. "Mmm, yes. That's right," thecrack-head says. Story and sexy fail.Visually the portions of the film set in the nazi world were beautiful, but very sterile. I never thought I'd complain about something beingtoo stylized, but Hollywood has a way of pushing the envelope. Thesescenes also made up about 12 minutes total from the film. Actionpromise fail. This film had such potential. It was disturbingly honest about whatmost movie watchers want to see. I would applaud Snyder for his bait-and-switch, but I think he just failed at making the sexy action filmhe really wanted. And just to ruin your day a little more: the nextSuperman is also the next film in Snyder's downward trajectory. At least it spoke to the crack-head.

::Warning Major Spoilers:: A good movie, great idea and a 4/5 star follow through. I would suggest you take a view of the film ::Warning Major Spoilers::

So, first of all i really enjoyed the film the film!::Major Spoiler Alert::Major Spoiler Alert::Please Know Spoiler Alert::It gave me a lot of what i wanted and more actually, starting with thesilent cold open with Emily Browning singing a version of Sweet Dreams(are made of this) BTW the entire soundtrack i downloaded the night igot home from the movie, really great. So the beginning was emotional. Though i did wish they added morescenes to explain more of the family life, more of the evil step fatherand more of the sisters as a family to make me really feel the painbaby-doll went through. After returning home, i found out afterresearch that a lot of scenes were cut from the film, lets just hopethat its in the directors cut DVD.After the title is shown, the main character Baby-doll is taken to themental hospital which unfolds an entire book of craziness. I reallywanted a cleaner transition from reality to the sub-reality but ithought that the camera movements that went from baby-dolls blond hairwas great, as it pans around to reveal another actress just acting outa scene. The cuts from sub-reality to fantasy-reality were really good, like the first one with baby-doll in the snow temple getting the firstlesson from The Wise Man.I did want more character development. I wanted to see morepersonality's of the characters blondie, rocket and amber after theywere introduced, as i could already tell that sweet-pea was the toughgirl and possible the oldest and baby-doll named after her looks. MadamGorski was perfect, and actor Oscar Isaac was perfect as Blue, thecontrolling 'owner' of the girls and the main antagonist. Madam Gorskiwas a maternal, while blue the main obstacle that stands in their wayto freedom. What i loved about the movie is that it really did give me all thethings i like in films: hot bodies, explosions, sultry moves, violence, pretty faces, blood, very short skirts, swords, dancers, fantasy, anime, pain and of course music. One of my favorite parts was the music, but that is far too much for meto type about that, maybe in the soundtrack review. With the CGI use, the film reminds me of some other great films thelook similar: Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, The Lovely Bones,of course 300 and Watchmen (two films which Director Zach Snyder alsodirected) It wasn't as tired as some CGI films can get, it wasinteresting to see the different scenes. I did want more scenery maybea bit more color, i sort of took the fantasy-reality scenes where thegirls have the 4 challenges, I took the settings as similar to levels, like in a video game. Each one was different and unique, with snowdojo, World War setting, castle with fire breathing dragon andfuturistic city train. I felt like i was in a really really cool videogame, that's another reason why i liked the film. It really gave methat 'anime' dream feel which i love so much. The film ended in a way i thought was right... with an epilogue endingmeant to be happy, though it was emotional and a little depressing; ithought it was honest. The ending monologue against a black screen was not completely perfectbut i realized i did like it.If you like complex stories with hidden messages and crazy zany actionsscenes with hot girls in skirts and lingerie carrying massive weaponsof destruction then this movie is for you. I rather enjoyed it, so whywouldn't you??

Don't miss the sublime

****SPOILER****It appears that the Director has you all fooled... Get your mind offthe scantly dressed girls and pay attention. Two words: MULTIPLEPERSONALITIES... think about it, watch it a few times, then decidewhat's real and what's not.P.S. If you still don't get it do the following: 1) go look up anima (spirit guide) or Carl Jung 2) look at what made her sink into delusion and who got killed, thenwho was the next to get killed. Make the connection? I'll give you ahint little sister then older sister... oh and "tell mom I said I loveher" 3) people didn't get lobotomy for nothing! I don't care how bad theasylum, she/them had issues to work out.4) LASTLY, Who's story is it?!? Hmmmm....who narrates it.

Some good, some bad...

I do agree Sucker Punch is a love it, hate it type of film. Some peopleloved it, some despised me. As for me, I neither loved it or hated it.I have mixed feelings on Sucker Punch. I noticed some good things, butsome areas of improvement too. It is not among my favourites of theyear, but I think there are much worse movies released this year.PROS: Sucker Punch's visuals are spectacular, the case with all of ZackSnyder's movies. The cinematography and editing are excellent, and thecostumes, settings and effects likewise. There is also an atmospheric soundtrack, stylish direction from Snyderand good performances from Emily Browning, Abbie Cornish, Jenna MeloneVanessa Hudgens and Oscar Isaac.Plus I loved Sucker Punch's idea. It was original and very interesting.CONS: Despite this great idea, Sucker Punch doesn't quite live up to itin the execution of the storytelling. The story had this great conceptand started off wonderfully, but as the film progresses it does getincreasingly bewildering and convoluted.Pacing is also uneven. The film could have been longer, so the filmcould have had more time to explain itself further, and some of themiddle feels a little pedantic. The script does have some stilted moments as well, and the characterswhile intriguing and decently acted could have done with moredevelopment. In conclusion, Sucker Punch has its good points, but some assets couldhave been better. 6/10 Bethany Cox

If you're going to see it, see it on the big screen... (or a big telly!)

This is one of the most surprised I've been by a film. Whether that'sin a good way or a bad way I'm yet to decide. One thing I will say... this WON'T be what you're expecting. Anysynopsis you read will be true, but vague. Expect the unexpected.Without spoiling it for anyone, the story of 'Sucker Punch' takes us onthe journey of "BabyDoll" an abused young woman put into care by herevil stepfather. What follows is a very enjoyable (if VERY strange)action flick. If you like guns, monsters, and girls not wearing muchfor an hour and a half, then this is a film for you.The thing that gives this review an undisputed 7/10 in my opinion isthe visuals. Every sequence in this film has something about it.Whether it's the way the moonlight is caught shining through babydoll'swindow in the very first scene, or one of the vast landscapes duringthe action scenes, there will be SOMETHING that takes your breath away.If you buy the DVD, and watch it on a portable TV, I don't think you'llenjoy it.Watch it on the big screen, this could be a big success!

Jordan Hoffman 04 May 2012

How could a movie with giant samurai, interplanetary robots, undead WWI soldiers, dragons and 5 half-naked beauties be bad? Well, funny you asked.

03 May 2012

Just Bad

This was just a bad movie from start to finish. I had very little idea about what was going on as the plot jumps all over the place and the acting was just as bad. Save you $$ and wait until it is on HBO, etc.

justinedilberian 02 May 2012

Sucker Punch was wonderful :)

I know that some people did not enjoy the movie, but as a 19-year-oldwoman, I can proudly say I thoroughly enjoyed it! So the scantily cladwomen is a bit much for me, but much appreciated by my boyfriend. It'sa movie that I can enjoy for artistic purposes and he can enjoy foraction reasons :) Without giving away any spoilers, the movie hadelements of action and sexuality, but also sincerity and a killersoundtrack. I was incredibly pleased and would suggest it to anyoneover 16. Otherwise, the themes are a bit graphic for children 15 orunder. But for us, it was an awesome date movie that providedthoughtful commentary on the drive home, as well as an Ipod stockedwith new tunes :)

The Vidiot Reviews...

Sucker Punch The best way to get women to feel comfortable being inside of a mentalinstitute is to design it after a shopping mall.Unfortunately, the architects of the female nuthouse in this fantasywent with the more oppressive blueprints.Admitted to Lennox House by her sadistic stepfather, Babydoll (EmilyBrowning) plunges into insanity after she's scheduled to belobotomized. To avoid life in a vegetative state, she and her fellow femaleresidents (Vanessa Hudgens, Jena Malone, Abbie Cornish, Jamie Chung)participant in nightly campaigns, headed up by a sagacious spirit(Scott Glenn), that takes them through otherworldly motifs, in searchof five items that will help them escape. With scantly-clad girls massacring samurais, dragons, and Nazis, thismulti-level metaphorical mess is a meaningless meander through anadolescent male's wet dream.Besides, most of the crazy women inside a mental institute are onlythere because they suffer from being a woman.
