Blending state-of-the-art animation with live action, Hop tells the comic tale of Fred, an out-of-work slacker who accidentally injures the Easter Bunny and must take him in as he recovers. As Fred struggles with the worlds worst house guest, both will learn what it takes to finally grow up.

Knew nothing about this one when we rented it for our family movie night with the kids (7 & 3), so my expectations were low. I was pleasantly surprised by this wholesome, cute, and fairly consistently funny little flick. The story centers around a slacker 30ish guy living at home, mostly unemployed, and without any direction or motivation, much to the chagrin of his family. Simultaneously we meet a similarly unmotivated, directionless slacker bunny living near Easter Island with his father (none other than the Easter Bunny) shunning the expectation that he'll take over for his father and hoping instead to become a famous drummer. The paths of young human and young rabbit meet and together they help one another grow up & discover their true callings. The animation is top notch, and the mixture of live action & animation is handled seamlessly to winsome effect. The overall attitude is family-friendly with only a few possibly objectionable bits: a brief scene where the bunny tries to get into the Playboy Mansion because he's heard it's where 'sexy' bunnies go & he considers himself sexy, and a few utterances of "Oh my God." The PG rating is appropriate but it's a very mild PG and probably suitable for all ages. Even our 3 year old found nothing to be frightened by, which is unusual. The biggest strengths are crisp writing and humor that works for the most part. There were several laugh out loud slapstick scenes and the whole thing is just pretty fun. Overall a lightweight but pleasant movie with a good sense of humor and broad appeal. Recommended for a rental.

Skip, jump, run away, whatever! Do anything you have to do to avoid Hop, which treats its plot like a formality and its young viewers like brainwashed twits.
Peter Debruge 15 May 2012
Hop integrates animated characters into live-action settings, relying on director Tim Hill to handle the logistics of convincingly blending both worlds.
Terry Staunton 15 May 2012
Hill mines the same seam of cuteness as in his earlier Alvin and the Chipmunks, with Brand's manic characterisation helping to paper over the cracks of a flimsy story.

I really was expecting something funnier. The trailers had most of the funny stuff. I mean is was okay but it could have been so much more.
Scott Chitwood 14 May 2012
Adults will pretty much have to check their brains in at the door, sit back, and enjoy the popcorn and snacks.
Tom Long 14 May 2012
Hop is just too shrill, slick and sickly sweet for anybody's good. Watching it won't rot your teeth, but it could leave an ugly cavity in your brain.

This is NOT Elf, Ice Age, or anything by Pixar, Disney, or anythingresembling any other fun family film that's come out in the past 50years.Who was this movie made for? Kids? Adults? Teens? The trailer gives youthe ONLY funny/cute parts. When you have a movie and Chelsea Handlerplays a serious part vs using her natural comedic abilities, you knoweets a steenky mess - to use the bad guy (protagonist?) headchick/rabbit thing with a Latino accent. So they are outsourcing laborin movies now.I brought my 3yr old and he fell asleep within the first 15 minutesfrom boredom. I let him nap and he woke up about halfway through andstill had more fun looking around the theater than watching the screen.I wanted to leave or take a nap myself actually. Take a twenty-something slacker who doesn't want to move out of hisparent's house, a weird sister/brother/boyfriend/girlfriend vibe, abunny who no one seems to be surprised that can talk except the slackerdude after he spent 10 minutes acting gape-mouthed like he's seeingJesus, David Hasselhoff (no really, David Hasselhoff) who the slackersays "he's a great actor" but everything's relative here apparently, unfunny live action actors at every turn - I kept waiting for Gary Coleto channel his OfficeSpace character and say "yeah, I'm gonna have toapologize for this movie for the rest of my career", and why do thebunnies have British accents - when they live under the statues EasterIsland - ho ho that's hilarious, shake it up, and poop it out as fastas you can.The only funny part of this movie is when the bunny poops jelly beans. And whoever pooped this movie out should be fired - or forced to watchit over and over until they apologize.

This fantasy tries with a few laughs and not too clever puns and quips.I just needed a meaningful storyline. I wanted to say that it wasenjoyable but the truth is it reeked of the old lame Disney scriptsthat failed so miserably from the 60's and 70's. All too often theactors hammed it up and literally overacted to the point it detractedfrom enjoying this feebled film. Perhaps the kids will buy into thesimple and corny plot but not the adults who expect a bit more thanthat. Again, it was the script and flimsy plot that let me down.Copycat of Christmas images like Santa Claus with the Easter Bunny wasanother sign of a weak story concept. Using a sleigh so similar toSanta's was just another example. 4 STARS

Parts of this movie made me hopping-mad. But, hey, I'm a bunny and I hop a lot. It annoyed my two-legs, too, though, and she never hops.

I have to admit I was dreading seeing this movie. My husband promisedmy sons, 5 and 8 he'd take them to see it. I read the reviews and triedto convince the "boys" to do something else. The reviews were AWFUL. Wesat through Rango a few weeks okay. It was okay. I didn't particularlylike the Alvin movies, but they were bearable. Well, this movie blewRango and Alvin out of the water. My five year old who asks, "Is italmost over," five minutes into every movie didn't ask me one time. Itwas very entertaining, and the audience (mostly kids) seemed to loveit. The scene where Fred uses E.B. as a hand puppet is hilarious. Bestkids movie I've seen with my kids...EVER!

I saw "Hop" today at the cinema. A wonderful movie for young and old, and old old alike!!! The little characters ( bunnies, chicks ) are so adorable. It is colorful and comical. I hardly can wait to see this movie again. I will get the "Hop" dvd once it is available.

I decided to get an I-HOP tasting after seeing those very enticingtrailers of this computer animated film called "Hop" about a rock stardreaming Easter Bunny. The aforementioned protagonist is called E.B.and is vocally branded by Mr. Katy Perry himself, Russell Brand. In theflick, E.B. is about to be crowned the next Easter Bunny in hishometown of Easter Island by the former Easter Bunny who happens to beE.B.'s dad (voiced by Hugh Laurie). However, E.B. does not roll withthe beat of that drum and decides to hop away from his so-calleddestiny by fleeing to Hollywood to pursue his dream of being a stardrummer. In Tinsletown, he meets Fred O' Hare; a California slacker whois housesitting the mansion of a millionaire employer of his sister.O'Hare is played by the other James Franco named James himself, JamesMarsden. Obviously, O'Hare is first startled of the sight of a talkingbunny, and is wondering if he saw "Donnie Darko" yet one too manytimes. Eventually, E.B. and Fred buddy up; and with Fred's help, E.B.ends up in a David Hasselhoff talent show in order to pursue his famousmusician aspirations. This is where the film gets very chipmunked(whatever that means) and follows the same formulaic route as the"Alvin and The Chipmunk" masterpieces (sarcastically coughing numeroustimes). Back at Easter Island, a petite chick villain (yes, you heardright) named Carlos decides to plan a coup so he can be the next EasterBunny. Carlos is voiced by Hank Azaria. Russell Brand did nail voicingE.B. (I don't think no one could have done better), and Azaria was alsoquite a bad chick delight with his vocal efforts as Carlos. However, Ido have to go egging on the rest of "Hop". Marsden was extremelyannoying with his performance as Fred, and the rest of the human castof "Hop" seemed as if they were doing the bare minimum to pick up theirEaster movie paychecks. Director Tim Hill and Screenwriters Cinco Paul& Ken Daurio did find their way in developing the animated charactersrightfully so, but they could not hunt their way at all in constructingan engaging plot line. For the most part, "Hop" is a basket full ofridiculousness, but Brand and Azaria saved it from being a.. (drum rollplease) Holiday cinematic disaster. *** Average

This is a cute and funny Easter-themed movie for young kids. That's about all you need to know about it. The plot is not particularly inventive, nor the writing or characters, but it's solid holiday-themed entertainment. And this is definitely Easter as 'kid holiday' not 'religious holiday', so if you are looking for something that gets into the religious meaning of Easter, it's not here. This movie centers around an Easter Bunny named Hop who wants to be a drummer, and so runs away from Eastertown. As a movie, Hop is to Easter what Rudolph is to Christmas - a non-religious, cute holiday-themed movie about misfits who find their way. Hop and his friends are all animated, while the humans in Los Angeles where he runs to are not. The mix of animation and 'real characters' is about as good as I've seen. Probably will be an annual watch in our house for the next few years...

A fairly undistinguished but pleasant and easy-to-take holiday movie, with slow spots and silly spots and a handful of moments of inspiration.
Rich Cline 06 May 2012
What could have been a painfully childish animated Easter romp is given a shot of deranged humour and an above-average cast of voices and cameos.
Chris Hewitt (St. Paul) 06 May 2012
"Hop" feels less like an attempt to tell a story than an attempt to reach out to as many marketing demographics as possible.
Mihai Pop 05 May 2012
I found this a brainwashing exercise for kids, with product placementeverywhere, a large effort to push products in the young minds. It all starts with Easter presents, all of which have to be sweet, orthe fact that a kid spy has to use a smartphone to get about, with mapand photo camera, but also many others.I have to call this a consumer brainwashing orgy, and although in USsome of the public may be used to this low quality movies, for me thisseemed like garbage, as I would have appreciated 1:30h of commercialsmore.Regarding the kids entertainment factor, if you want your kids tofollow the consumer trends (fashion) this is probably a fairlyacceptable movie, pointing you to what you could be, but if you want tobe independent (not look independent) this is at best a 3/10 movie.I gave my pluses because of the CGIs.Don't get exposed to this movie, it's toxic.

This time, the phrase "From the producers of Despicable Me" did notsound like a warning, but as a recommendation, because I moderatelyenjoyed that movie. Unfortunately, Hop ended up being a horrible filmwhich uses the most cloying and tiring routines from the family cinema. In a few words, I found the story to be boring, the humor to beexcessively simple and trite and the performances (with one exception)to be lacking of any life or energy. However, the solid animation andvivacious music might fool to some kids to make them believe they arehaving fun.I previously mentioned that almost all the performances (also the voiceones) feel listless. The only actor who shows conviction in his role isJames Marsden as the leading character. His best attribute in thismovie is that he makes us to believe he is genuinely interacting with arabbit which would not exist on the screen until months later, duringthe post-production. And I also liked the fact that he takes hischaracter seriously; thinking about it better, I think that that iswhat makes the relationship between his character and the rabbitcredible. Unfortunately, Marsden's competent work was not enough forsaving this movie from being an absolute tedium. And just in case the screenplay was not questionable enough, Hop forcesits premise even more in order to justify the use of sporadicrock-and-roll songs, with the hope of looking "cooler". Besides, theexcuse of the rabbit wanting to be a rock singer is simply a rehash ofthe old cliché "son who refuses to follow his father's steps". Anyway,I think that Hop is an atrocious movie which made me feel likegenuinely wasting my time. In other words, avoid it at any cost.

I went because I love CGI, and the candy factory did give the allusionI was going to see a Willie Wonka and The Chocolate Factory kind ofstory. The graphics for that where mesmerizing and imaginative. Kudosto the CGI guys, though it didn't play a huge part in the show.I see the Prodigal Son story used for Hop, but I have to wonder whychildren's movies are being made with crude humor. "Up" was so enduringand definitely family friendly. Hop? I'm hoping that my favorite Dr.Seuss story next year by Illumination Entertainment keeps the Lorax andMr. Onceler true to their characters and not adding LA lingo to a goodstory.
