as if they were out of money or lost interest midway production.

Lets start by saying i'm a fan of horror and thrillers of the sort. Istarted watching this movie and i was pretty excited as i was lookingforward to a decent horror/thriller movie. Half way through it i wasfeeling pretty nervous and tense, the characters were believable theplot was quite thrilling, had a few scares and i liked where it wasgoing. Then it all spiraled down pretty fast, instead of horrified iwas feeling giggly, it suddenly turned into a B flick all over theplace. The plot got loose the make up and characters design washorrific, and not the good kind, it was predictable as hell, and allaround ridiculous. Thats's too bad because it had a pretty goodpotential and it did feel, for the first half of it at least, like anew take on the genre, that was all over pretty soon and things botbaad, to put it simply.

Scary tense fun

This review is from: Insidious (DVD) If you are a horror fan and creepy dark movie scenes make you grin and you love the idea of - something - some dark, dangerous thing standing in a shadow hidden corner then this is the movie for you. Incidious (not a good title, if you ask me) provides all the genuine jolts needed at regular intervals to create tension and fear. The dark, quiet atmosphere is an added bonus. You will never hear the tune - 'Tiptoe thru the tulips' - again in the same way after sitting through this one. They use it the way the movie Jeepers Creepers used the tune - well, 'Jeepers Creepers'. I just wish I had seen this movie in the theater. The sound must have been great. Here in my living room it was mostly just uneven. A suggestion if this one comes along to a movie theater near you this Halloween - go alone, hunker down, dive into a giant tub of buttered popcorn and enjoy. I know I will.

Excellent Subtextual Tour-de-force Concerning Parenting

This review is from: Insidious (DVD) One of the reasons that a lot of young people do not like INSIDIOUS is because the film is not for them. It is a film aimed at adults--particularly parents. Everything in INSIDIOUS is allegorical, each idea representing the aging parent whose aging children eventually grow up and enter a world (The Further) of which the parents are not part, but that the parents have experienced but have forgotten. Moreover, in this world exist terrors that may consume the children, changing them into something recognizable only in body while the spirit transforms into something awful--killer, paedophile, even a lonesome elderly person (an elderly mother or father who would leech the life from their children whose youth and success they resent)who seeks to draw the life from those that she latches to. Each ghost in INSIDIOUS represents a specific worldly terror. I'll not spoil the film by drawing comparison for them all, but think carefully about the parricidal ghost. What is the wish of many adolescents? And what parent does not fear being "killed" and forgotten by one's children? If one looks at INSIDIOUS through this lens, the film glows with subtext making it a far superior accomplishment that is apparent.

An Exercise in Suspense

Gorehounds, beware... If you like your horror served up a little more hard core and bloody, I'd still recommend Insidious, although I'd say proceed with caution. "Insidious" is not a blood-soaked slasher, no 20 minute torture scenes... this is a movie that delivers its chills the old fashioned way: through suspense. The slow tick-tock of a grandfather clock that sounds like a heartbeat in the dead of night, swathed in shadows where anything may be lurking just out of sight; Creeking floor boards; Fleeting images caught from the corner of the eye. There are some genuinely creepy moments in Insidious, and the acting by Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne is incredibly well done and grounded in realism - even when the movie takes some pretty unrealistic turns. There has been some comparison with the 80's classic "Poltergeist," particularly with the team of parapychologists who go head to head with the supernatural presense. I was 12 when Poltergeist was released, and I still think it's one of the best ghost stories put on the big screen (yes, it's dated now but still nostalgic). To be compared with the likes of "Poltergeist" is a big compliment. There are times late in the film when things start to veer toward the cheesy. However, to the film's credit, nothing gets very cheesy for very long... until we get to the last 15 minutes or so, where the movie reveals its biggest plot twist. While many horror movies lose all steam and crumble once all the secrets are unvieled, the last 15 minutes of Insidious is a mixed bag- equally fascinating, original, and borderline cheesy. After some consideration, I decidedly enjoyed it. However, many viewers - my wife being one of them- will find the first half of the film much superior to the second half. Regardless, "Insidious" is worth a look. It's much better than the majority PG-13 fare that goes for "horror" these days. Even at PG-13, "Insidious" is far creepier and more suspenseful than many R rated horror movies. Highly recommended.

Recent horror film can't outrun ancient cliches

The Exorcist, The Entity, and Poltergeist are all very important movies. In fact, nothing proves that statement more than the dozens upon dozens of films that have aped their premises. There's a person or a family and they're being followed by something that they can't shake, so they call an expert in the paranormal for help. As Sam Raimi's Drag Me to Hell proved, it isn't impossible to create a movie using that formula and have it deliver on its promises. Drag Me to Hell had a great cast, a clever script, and taut direction. Insidious has only two of these things. With a cast made up of Patrick Wilson (Hard Candy), Rose Byrne (Damages) and Barbara Hershey (loooots of stuff), I'll let you decide which of the two this movie is lacking. To start with, the script is bad. I mean, really bad. As someone who has acted in things with horrible dialogue and even written some things with horrible dialogue, I'm still surprised when I hear such wooden nonsense come out of the mouths of actual actors who have proven themselves with great performances. They try, though. Rose Byrne sits on her porch waiting for her husband to come home and when he arrives, one of those thoughtless "why are you coming home so late all of the sudden?" moments rears its ugly head. The problem is, the movie is absolutely loaded with this tripe. Of course, at one point in the film, the husband has seen something that can in no way be misconstrued, and he throws the exorcist, uh, sorry, the astral projection lady out of his house for being fraudulent. Every single thing this movie does has been done somewhere else and has been done much better. That isn't to say that there aren't any good ideas in the script. For starters, astral projection is rarely in movies, so it's interesting to see it show up in a horror film, but the concept is wasted on a simple retread of the final act of Poltergeist, except it's less visually impressive. This leads me to my next point; the direction. A movie like this needs tense, gripping direction. Instead, we get something that lacks focus. Director James Wan is not good at those things. Oftentimes, it's brutally obvious that the actors aren't even speaking to one another. The pace often drags its heels and for too long, the movie goes through the motions of showing us the characters not doing much of anything. That would be okay if those scenes had a point, but they don't. They're just uninteresting. This film definitely could have used some more liveliness all around. Scenes that should be frightening come across as plain silly. Oooh, there's a person walking back and forth outside. Oooh, the door opened itself. Finally, when the time actually comes for something that should be visually interesting to occur, Wan shows us a house with a little bit of fog and some darkness. That's great, the unfathomable dimension is a foggy version of the families old house. That's not scary or clever, it's just lazy. That's a great word to sum up this movie; lazy. Now, before I ramble on any further, I'd like to talk about the sound design, which is so overbearing and ridiculous, all it did was make me chuckle uncomfortably. When the audience is supposed to be scared of something, we generally see no sign of it on screen, but the score ratchets up in intensity and starts making silly Halloween noises before finally cutting off BECAUSE NOTHING HAPPENS. Oh, my, Rose Byrne used a hockey stick to look at what is obviously a pair of shoes. Oh my god, it WAS a pair of shoes! Naturally, the score has to reach a crescendo when that happens, and a comical crescendo at that. It does redundant crap like that through the whole movie, too. We get it, it's a horror movie, now stop trying to scare people with shaky violins and false scares.I didn't mean to ramble, but this movie really is insanely lazy. If you scare really easily, chances are you might like this. If you like your movies sensical and intelligent, however, you'll probably be bored to tears by this tedious, derivative film. I love Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne, but they should seriously try signing on to less idiotic movies from now on.

First film ever I've seen to deal with astral projection

I had wanted to see this for a while, based on the trailer, whichlooked pretty scary and I wasn't disappointed, having bought it onBlu-ray DVD. It certainly lives up to its name. The idea of aninsidious threat is one that grows, as the growing sense of unease withwhich this film plays out, highlights. Even the opening credits arevery unsettling.Patrick Wilson's character and his lovely, very hard working wife and 2young children move into a new home and almost from the word go,strange things start happening. House alarms go off, one of theirchildren meets with a nasty accident and ends up in hospital andintruders seemingly come into the house. Neither Patrick nor his wifeRose want to admit whats going on. Its only until they call in a psychic (with much persuasion on Rose'spart) that it becomes apparent that there's 'something' badly wrongwith both their son and the house. The use of astral projection as anexplanation is a brilliant one and adds a real flavour and purpose tothe film, but its the sense of real, genuine menace that sets thisscary movie from almost all others. There's a touch of the Excorcistgoing, Poltergeist, the Others (quite a big nod to that) and ParanormalActivity. No gore, but then it doesn't need it . A brilliant moviewhich does what it says on the tin.

Good PG13 thriller to watch with your kids

The movie is not great but it's not bad either. A couple, Josh and Renai, move into the old house they just bought, with their two young sons, Dalton and Foster, and baby daughter. Weird things begin to happen, the older son Duncan falls and slips into a coma, doctors indicate that there is no brain damage and the coma cannot be explained. The mother starts to see and hear things and persuades her husband that they need to leave this house. They move into another house but it's not really explained if they put this one up for sale, or how much time has gone by, or if the new house is theirs or if they have moved in with Josh's mother. But Mom still sees and hears things and her mother-in-law, played by Barbara Hershey, does as well. She connects them to Elise, her paranormal investigator friend who arrives with her two investigators, Specs and Tucker, who are very funny.Patrick Wilson is very good ok as the husband whose son Duncan is haunted and Lin Shaye is fantastic as the psychic. Rose Byrne plays the mother and Ty Simpkins the haunted son.Suspenseful but not gory, good tension and atmosphere, it was worth seeing but not one that is worth watching again. I didn't like the ending at all though.

More "idiotic" than "insidious"

I seldom agree with critics when it comes to film revews (see my Black Swan review), but I am in total agreement on "Insidious". This film has a pretty strong and effectively creepy first act and sets the stage for even BIGGER scares later on. Unfortunately...that is where it fails. After about an hour, this potential scary classic delves into the realm of stupidity. It's as if the writer sat down and fell in love with the concept....and then let it get away from them. Like many of the reviews here, I completely agree the scares should be about what you DON'T see. The old Hitchcock device that worked so well for Spielburg in "Jaws", works well here..for about forty five minutes. Then it becomes "Poltergeist"...but not a GOOD version. The writer and director both wear their infulences on their sleeves and there are equal parts "Exorcist" and "Poltergeist" here. The sad thing is, this film does neither effectively enough to be an homage. I won't give out any spoilers here...but I will say the ending clearly demonstrates that the writer just "gave up".

Started out a bit slow but wow, had me tensed up all to the end

Unlike what seems like most of the reviews are from, I'm not a moviecritic or "self appointed" movie expert and I'm not going to use bigwords to sound all educated and knowledgeable(except this one)...I justwanna let everyone know it's a pretty good horror movie, and it's beena long time since I've seen one as scary.Anyways, I took my girlfriend to watch this and it did start out veryslow and had me a bit worried that I picked a movie that might suck. But once it picked up(about 20 mins in) it didn't me down.Scary as hell, that's pretty much all all I have to say. Only thing Iwould call a "complaint" is that the ghost's near the end seemed a bit"haunted house" or not very scary at times haha. But that's only atcertain times. Most of the time, I was jumping left and right.A lot of the popups were obvious but holy crap, I still jumped haha.

Impressive, atmosphere-driven horror.

Titles that spontaneously spring to mind when reviewing "Insidious" are"Poltergeist", "The Haunting" and "The Exorcist". Now, you'll have toadmit that there are far worse movies in the genre to get comparedwith! "Insidious" is another collaboration between the multi-talentedwriter/actor Leigh Whannell and the multi-talented director James Wan.The duo was previously responsible for the original – and undoubtedlystill the best – "Saw" and the creepy ventriloquist chiller "DeadSilence". Especially compared to their gore-soaked debut feature "Saw","Insidious" is a completely different kind of horror movie. It's amature and effectively slow-brooding horror story that thrives onatmosphere, intelligent plotting and a few imaginative themes that willkeep even the most experienced and knowledgeable horror fanaticsintrigued. The story opens like thirteen ghost movies in a dozen do… Ahappy young family moves into their newly purchased dream house, butnot much later their oldest son – presumably due to a banal fall from aladder – slips into a mysterious coma that perplexes all medicalexperts. Renai, the mother, is convinced that somehow the new house ishaunted and soon after begins to hear eerie noises through the babymonitor and see ghostly appearances in her boy's room. She manages topersuade her husband to move elsewhere, but when the strange paranormaloccurrences continue, they get the professional help of a spiritualmedium. She discovers that the son isn't suffering from an unknownillness, but that he's gifted with the ability to explore alternatedimensions during his sleep. Only, … he stepped across a dangerousboundary this last time. And, moreover, his gift seems to behereditary… Admittedly the first full hour of "Insidious" is ratheruneventful and very vague, but Wan and Whannell nevertheless succeed inkeeping you confident that the wait will be worthwhile. You just sensethat it won't be another routine and clichéd haunted-house thriller. The ambiance is similar and the clues point in that direction, but thefilms admirably comes with an innovative twists on the supernaturalthemes. The last half hour is very powerful and contains a handful oftruly efficient "jumpy" moments, albeit still without gore or expensivespecial effects! The last five minutes actually even qualify as thestrongest horror finale I've seen in a few years. The actingperformances are decent (great to see Barbara Hershey again!) and theset-pieces are well selected. I can only recommend this movie.

Thrilling and then an utter let down

Have you seen the mini-series It? This film is much like that, not in plot but in being great, creepy, atmospheric, scary and then falling completely flat in the last act. It isn't that the story loses its' appeal. If it had been just as well-written and filmed as the earlier scenes, I could have lived with the predictable ending. As is if it's a completely different movie, the style, tone, cheap look of the final sets, the overall look seems different, like they had a new cinematographer and director -it just doesn't flow well. And late in the film, Patrick Wilson's character all but uses a bullhorn to announce his presence when being quiet is of the utmost importance. Rose Bryne is the one that needed to shout in this scene, not Wilson. I did really like Lin Shaye in this. It's nice to see her in something other than a Farrelly Bros. movie. Not that she isn't great in those. There are obvious bits of other movies here, Poltergeist, 1408 but this film could have stood on its' own had it not lost it all in the climatic scenes at the end. Bummer.

Really??? Scary? I don't think so...

This review is from: Insidious (Amazon Instant Video) I rented this on a lark hopping for some good horror...and was highly disappointed. If you enjoyed Paranormal Activity you'll love it. A bit higher budget with lame special effects, bad acting and an even worse story line. If I had paid movie theater prices for this I would have been pissed. As it was only $3.99, I can just say, "meh" and walk away.

Worst movie I ever seen

The first hour was good but after that I'm assuming they ran out of money....tragedy I advise anyone to not see this movie only reason I'm not so shaken up is because I saw it free

Some good ideas but ultimately a poor film

I had high expectations for this film, and so when I got offered freetickets to the preview screening in Sydney then I jumped at the chance.Sadly, having seen it I now wouldn't recommend it to anyone. It starts out well enough, and there are a couple of 'make you jump'moments within the 1st 30 mins or so. But it then very quickly becomesa very frustrating (and unintentionally funny) film, with nonsensicaldecisions being made and scary moments just becoming repetitive andobvious cliques. Also, the acting by the father is particularly bad andthere were audible groans in the cinema I watched it in whenever hetried to be dramatic. The few good ideas and good characters in the film are quickly over-shadowed and moved aside by the bad ideas and bad characters. Meaningno tension really develops and you are never drawn into the atmosphere. To sum it all, the finale of the film caused huge amounts of laughterin the cinema, rather than building to a scary climax.Avoid.

For Me.. Excellent!

I am truly a Haunted House/Thriller fan. This film had it all. I enjoybeing scared by a film (this hasn't really happened lately, other thana few moments in 'Paranormal Activity') 'Insidious' was as scary asthey come, and not in a conventional way i thought. The film did nothave the typical 'there's some one in the mirror' bathroom scene, whichfrankly, i thought was incredibly refreshing. 'Insidious was scarybecause the writers were talented enough to make us, as an audience, care about the Character Development. The first half of the film wasfull of jumps and scares, and they were done in such a way that theymade you even more terrified. For Example, at one point in the movie, the Characters think they are being burgled, or that someone hasentered their home, this makes the fright factor even bigger, assceptics are more susceptible to 'real scares' like a burglary. In astrange way i found the first half of the movie fairly believable (asmuch as you can believe in ghosts and demons, obviously..) As the filmprogressed i just got more and more scared,as did the rest of thecinema audience, to the point were i didn't quite no what to do withmyself, or where to put myself! I did, in fact have to peep through myfingers at one stage! I have read a lot of reviews about 'Insidious'and they mostly say the same thing, 'Scary, Brill, 1st half Great!Second half, not so great..' The important thing about the second halfof the film is this.. Yes, it got a little silly, yes, it didn't leavemuch to the imagination, but truthfully, the first half of the filmreeled me into such a state of horror that i couldn't have cared lessabout the 'silly factor'Of all the reviews i have read that have disliked the last 20-30 minsof the film, almost all of those said that they were still scared. If its frights you want, and literally a heart-pounding 2hours. Watchthis.Truly a triumph.

Eh

The plot was OK, but really when it hits DVD, it will be a total snore.Could've been better, pretty weak, and the "jump scenes" were a joke. Ilaughed more than anything because the characters are horrible.Supernatural has MUCH better "demons" and boogie men! The movie lookedold, like it was filmed in the 80s and while all the kiddies in themovie jumped and screamed, nobody left there truly scared...or excitedabout seeing a quality movie. For hardcore horror movie fans, thismovie is a DEFINITE no!!!!! Rite was much better and it's jump scenesactually did make me jump! REALLLLLLLY disappointed! Kinda angry that Ipaid for 4 people to go see this movie. NOT worth the money OR time.Rethink it unless ya just don't care about your time or money.

Starts well but ended up being funny...

I had high expectations of this film as I am an avid horror fan but Icame away feeling let down.It started well, building the tension, and there were a couple ofmoments that made both myself and my 15 year old daughter jump, howeveraround half way through the film, the so called 'scary' parts becamecomedic and I am not on about the two characters others are talkingabout in their reviews, which in my view were good value.I also took along my mother, who jumps like a cat on a hot tin roof athorror films and even she thought it was silly by the end. The film cost me £25 for the three of us, so If I were you I would saveyour money and either wait for it on Sky or buy the DVD. 8/10 for the first half & 2/10 for the remainder. 5/10 overall
