An Inspiring True Story......

This review is from: Soul Surfer (DVD) I am always on the lookout for a good true story....then I saw a preview of Soul Surfer. I knew I had to see this movie. Unfortunately, for us shift workers, sometimes this doesn't always work out, so Hooray for DVD/Blu-Ray! I absolutely loved this movie. It has some sad moments, some reconnecting moments and then some truly inspirational moments. Dennis Quaid & Helen Hunt are great as always, but it's AnnaSophia Robb as Bethany Hamilton that steals the show. I've ended lending this movie to some of my workmates - even their husbands sat down and watched it. I would highly recommend this movie, if you like true stories that have everything except for endless gunfights & car chases. Easily a 5 star film!

A succession of would-be rousing clichés.

Excellent movie, of a true story, the surfer girl who lost her arm.

I remember reading the news when this happened a few years back. Thismovie, based on the real girl and her family and friends in Hawaii, comes across really well. AnnaSophia Robb is Bethany Hamilton who, as a 13-yr-old junior wasamong the best surfers in the world in her age group. She was about toget sponsored to surf professionally when she lost her left arm. This is not a faith-based movie, but being true to the person itincludes her Christian faith as an important part of overcoming thissetback and getting on with her life. Her parents are played well by Dennis Quaid as Tom Hamilton and HelenHunt as Cheri Hamilton. New to film Carrie Underwood is the missioncoordinator at church, Sarah Hill. In a blast from TV past, Kevin Sorbois the family friend, Holt Blanchard, who might have saved Bethany'slife that fateful day. Good movie, and the surfing competition scenes are done very nicely. SPOILERS: Her arm was bit off at the left shoulder by a shark while sheand friends were just "playing". She lost about 60% of her blood, almost died, but survived. Then, she gained strength in her remainingarm and eventually became a champion surfer. In the process she gainedfresh perspective on the meaning of life.

Soul Surfer

This is an excellent movie, following the tale of teen surfer Bethany Hamilton. Christian and moral values are well portrayed and Bethany is a good example and an inspiration for people around the world. My only concern is that, with all the beach scenes, skimpy bathing suits are common. And while the shark attack by itself isn't scary (as it is very brief and little is seen of the shark), the paddling to shore and frenzied drive to the hospital can be rather frightening for young children.Ariel_of_Narnia

Fanboy fest?

This is the most ridiculous movie I have ever seen and it seems as if the previous 11 reviews were written by people involved in the making of it. I've been to Hawaii 3 times and this is not the Hawaii I remember. There are actual Hawaiians living there, not transplanted Venice Beach surfer types. In fact, 95% of Hawaiians are of Samoan, Chinese, Japanese or Filipino descent. They're not haoles with blonde/blue/zero ounces of body fat! Simply ridiculous.

The film is not perfect - the narration is unnecessary, the surfing special effects look cheap and Carrie Underwood is unsteady in her cameo - but it's moving, anyway.

Beautiful Disaster

I watch and rate a lot of movies without really writing reviews. However, I felt compelled to speak out about Soul Surfer. Rarely has amovie made me feel so emotional the whole way through. There are a fewmoments when I might have zoned out but they are very rare. For mostpart this movie draws you in and you can't help feel like you arewitnessing the story for real. I have heard Soul Surfer being comparedto 127 Hours and honestly I think this is 127% better than JamesFranco's movie. Don't get me wrong 127 Hours is still a really goodmovie but I just found Soul Surfer so much more moving and touching.Beautiful Disaster is a term I use to describe something so tragic itis amazing. Like an epic love story such as Romeo & Juliet. Through thedisaster comes something so moving you will remember it forever, and Iwill certainly remember Soul Surfer!

Boring

It's a shame that a movie about such an inspiring young woman is flat and boring with little insight into any of the characters. The other one-star reviews have described it perfectly, and I can only reiterate that it is a waste of time.

True story of amazing courage. Loved it!

One of the best movies I have seen this year. Very well done! The moviewill bring tears of sadness, as well of tears of joy. It is sorefreshing to see young people portrayed in a positive light! Theactual girl (the movie is based on) is a great example for the youth ofthis decade. This is a movie that makes you think. It is inspirational. It gives people with disabilities or tragedies hope. If you have had atragedy in your life, or know someone who has, this movie is for you.The portrayal of their personal story is VERY tastefully done. You willleave the theater challenged. In addition, it shows the importance ofnot giving up. I would highly recommend this movie to everyone.

Intense, but has a good message

This movie is intense, a bit scary, but sends a good message. I only reccomend this to kids at least 8 or 10 years old because of the shark scene and they might get a little bit bored with it. I did get a little bored, but I still reccomend it. Although the movie is filled with women and girls in skimpy bikinis, it still sends a good message that all things are possible with God.

Great Family Movie

This movie is a positive uplifting tribute to an amazing young lady, her family and her community. This movie shows the best of the human spirit. If you want to be a better person or want your children to be the best they can be. Here is the place to start. You will see people at the best and even a few imperfections that even the best of us struggle with. This is a movie that will inspire you!!!

You wonder why this movie isn't a documentary, rather than a synthetic feature film with the heroine's arm digitally removed.

Extremely Well Done

Based upon a true story.Teenage surfer Bethany Hamilton (Robb) loses her left arm in a sharkattack, and questions why this happened to her and struggles to findmeaning. A trip to Thailand and the reading of her fan mail puts allinto perspective. She continues surfing with one arm and becomes whatshe always wanted in life: to be a pro surfer. Really, this is somekind of miracle. You know the beginning of this story and the ending as well as did thewhole world when this happened. What you need to see is the middle ofthe story and you get a ringside seat. This was extremely well done, but bring about 4-boxes of Kleenix as you will need every one of them. There is nothing sappy in here as it's all done as matter of fact forthe most part. It is within you to determine how often you reach forthe Kleenix as you witness a young girl's struggle to make sense of allthis with family and friends' support. Robb as Bethany does more than an outstanding job, and if truth beknown, probably somewhat understated. Dennis Quaid and Helen Hunt asthe parents do what most parents would do and stand by their daughter. We all wish we had a best friend like Alana Blanchard (Nicholson) whois also a competitor and who later also becomes a pro surfer. KevinSorbo as Holt Blanchard is the one who probably saved Bethany's lifeout there on the water when the shark attacked performs the reluctanthero to perfection. I have mixed feelings about Carrie Underwood as theChristian Charity organizer as I felt she should have shown more facialemotion in consoling Bethany. Or, maybe the Director was out catching awave at those times – we will never know. Craig T. Nelson as DoctorRavinsky was so good as the doctor I almost made an appointment. Heshould play those roles more often. The real winners in here are Robb's Oscar-worthy performance and thephotography during the surfing scenes. How they get the cameras in asclose as they do to the contestants is unbelievable. I kept askingmyself where is the cameraman when he is taking these shots. Surely, heisn't in the water right next to the competitors. Is he? This is puremovie magic. Very good. At the end of the movie, Bethany is asked if it was all worth it as nowshe feels she is back. She says she couldn't have embraced as many asshe has with 2-arms as she is embracing now with one arm. A truly greatresponse as I reached for another Kleenix. Violence: Yes, the shark attack, but not much is seen. Sex: No. Nudity:No. Gore: No. Language: No.

Such a good movie!

I saw this movie and it's my new favorite movie! It was so inspirational, and I loved how they portrayed Bethany's amazing faith in God. After seeing the movie, I read the book, and I was amazed at how true the movie stayed to her story. I would definitely recommend this movie to everyone, non-Christians included!

With God All Things Are Possible

I have watched this awesome movie on Starz 4 times so far, 3 times within the last 24 hours. My 8yr old grandaughter and I just watched it over and over, she said lets watch it again grandma. I love the movie and music so much that I cry every time I see and hear it. I have so much faith and believe in Gods power, I have believed in God and always known his love. And I believe without a doubt that if Bethaney didn't believe in Jesus Christ and know him through her faith that this movie probably never would have been made. This is a film that is for all of us I am proud and grateful to see such a movie that is not afraid to show real life, love, tragedy, and most of all that Jesus Christ pulled this young family through it, to realize that truly With God All Things Are Possible. My grandaughter loved it, I'm going to purchase it for my collection You can't believe what alot of critics say, that may speak negatively about this movie, for it is them who are mere men or women, who may not believe in our Heavenly Father, who may not be a Solider for God, make up your own mind, don't be a follower of those who lead you away from Jesus Christ. This movie will give you Hope,Faith, Encouragement, Lift your Spirit, Touch your Soul. This movie shows that Jesus Christ Love is bigger and more powerful than ANYTHING!!!

Catch the Wave

This review is from: Soul Surfer (DVD) Most of us have heard of Bethany Hamilton, or at least of the surfer girl who lost her arm to a shark off the coast of Kauai. Fewer people know that she came from a Christian family, and that her faith played a huge part in her overcoming this obstacle and continuing on to become a national surf champion."Soul Surfer" features Dennis Quaid and Helen Hunt as the parents, and AnnaSophia Robb (from "Bridge to Terebithia") does a great job in the role of Bethany. The film starts with some scenes establishing her family's faith and their playful fun together. All of them have surfing background and interest, and their lives on the Hawaiian Islands are portrayed in heartwarming ways that only add to the coming terror. The movie gives us some great surfing scenes, some beautiful photography, and when it reaches the moment of the shark attack, we are fully engaged. Although restrained in its showing of the violence, it captures the horrible feeling of loss, fear, and parental anxiety.Soon, Bethany is questioning God's plan in all this, since her surfing days could be over. She wonders how she'll ever find a guy who will love her with only one arm. And she watches her best friend be featured in Rip Curl promotions, while she stands on the sidelines and bravely supports her. She also struggles with media attention, not to mention the expected challenges of cutting oranges and putting on her own clothes. The special effects are well done, and we feel the anguish of not only Bethany, but of her parents as well. They are strong in their faith, but they are not perfect, and each member of the family has an issue to deal with, whether its the father's desire to push his daughter back into surfing, or the mother's desire to help her daughter accept her new physical appearance as one of true beauty. We also have Carrie Underwood playing the role of Bethany's youth pastor, there to offer hugs, love, advice, and a life-changing trip to Thailand after the devastating tsunami. For those who find any of this cheesy or too easy, they are missing the point. This is based on a true story. It's not pie-in-the-sky answers given in a fictitious setting, but the real-life struggles of the Hamiltons, and how God sustained them through some tough times. Bethany's own answers to the reporters are often word-for-word from actual interviews, where she gave impromptu responses. With even Roger Ebert giving this movie a good review, it's hard to imagine why some viewers seem to have an ax to grind with the faith element. While some movies are nothing more than sermons tacked onto a weak story, this is a strong story that would be inspiring even if it weren't Christian-based, but becomes that much more intriguing when rooted in biblical wisdom. This movie is well-acted, full of excitement, humor, and a number of emotionally stirring moments, when inspiration can be found in the human will to live and move on, and even more so in the solid faith that can sustain even the hardest of blows when a life, even a teenage girl's life, is surrendered to God. My own teen daughters loved this story, as did my wife. It's not only the best Christian movie I've seen, but one of the best sports movies I've seen. This is one wave I'm glad I caught early on.
