This review is from: Water For Elephants (Amazon Instant Video) When I read the synopsis for this movie, I did not think it would be very good. However, what an incredible movie!!! I was a little fearful that Rob Pattinson's portrayal of Jacob would be too similar to his other character Edward Cullen, however, that could not be farther from the truth!! He has proven himself to be a dynamic actor!!! His connection with the elephant draws you in to such a degree that you can feel his joy, and his pain through out the movie. This movie was cast wonderfully and the cinematography was brilliant. The more intimate scenes are so tastefully done, which is so refreshing considering most movies are getting extremely close to being x-rated lately. I would highly recommend this movie!!!

This review is from: Water for Elephants (DVD) I thought this movie was really good, I just wish I would have watched the movie first and then read the book.. Doesn't hold a flame to the book.

I am one that is not familiar with the book. However, the movie left me feeling unsure how I really felt just after the movie ended. Technically I think the movie was spot on. Very good acting and visually stimulating. And the story is interesting. My hint of doubt on how I felt was that the movie is slow in parts and I found myself drifting away at times before it would bring me back in. With the complexity and character development in the movie it takes a while to get parts of the story calibrated. I do not see that as a bad thing. The investment the script gave to the actors brings everything together and is well worth it in the end. The animal abuse is uneasy to watch but the movie is worth the time and money for a view. Enjoy.

As an animal lover, I found the story quite depressing. However I found Robert Pattinson and Chris Weitz's acting superb. I felt as if there was no chemistry between Rob and Reese. Rosie the elephant was the star of the show. However, on this note I am wondering, after watching the movie, if they in turn do the same things to her to get her to perform the tricks she does in the movie. Overall, I enjoyed it and would see it again.

Epic period piece beautifully directed with astonishing cinematography. If you can watch the train disappear into the foggy night withoutfeeling deeply moved and lonely then the romantic in you needsawakening! The characters are deep, full of life, believable and evokeintense emotion. Perhaps the most poorly written character was Marlenaplayed by an outstanding Reese Witherspoon - this may be her bestperformance but the writers failed to give her character the lines andthe passion she needed in this role. Despite this, Witherspoon did afine job of giving us a somewhat naive but strong female character -one who knows right from wrong but does not know quite how to reach outand grasp it.First of all: It's amazingly beautiful. The costumes and sets aregorgeous, the cinematography is exquisite, the animals are cute(especially Rosie the elephant) and the three leads are very easy onthe eyes as well.Robert Pattinson was outstanding as Jacob - there is just somethingabout the way he can speak volumes with his facial expressions - youcan see his childlike joy and delight as he watches the circusperformances, his anguish at the explosive temper of August and hisfeeling of betrayal at the treatment of the animals -- just anamazingly expressive face.Christoph Waltz was the Nurse Ratchet of this flick -- you just LOVEDto hate him through the entirety of the movie - from his rage, jealousy, his greed, his blind passion for his "dreams" of glory, fame, riches -- to the point of being unimaginably cruel. So believable, Ipersonally wanted to strangle him - I found it difficult to say "he isacting" -- that is a sign of a GREAT performance. The chemistry among the actors from the opening scene with Hal Holbrookmeeting the carny guys to the end is pure magic. Outstanding casting, the best storytelling in cinema in YEARS, and cinematography sostunning you can smell the smoke in the air all combine to make thisfilm a journey worth taking more than once.I loved that the writers did not rely on overt sex or heavy sexualovertones to convey love in this movie - but rather let the actorsconvey it in looks, body language, and reaction to situations. Thismovie proves it can be done.I loved that they combined the past with the present - a handful offlashback references to provide continuity of script and they paidattention to detail -- the costumes were breathtaking and accurate, thehobo camps, train jumping, the overcrowded sleeper cars, the bond ofthe carny family, the pain of a bust economy and the losses sufferedthe details are glorious and so heart-wrenching and real in this movie. There are parts of this film that require you to have a strong stomachfor suffering but the ending makes it understandable and somewhatworthwhile (as worthwhile as suffering can be) Easy easy 10/10

There was a time in this country's history when a visit from atraveling circus was about the most exciting event small towns couldwitness. Often times, practically the entire community would close downfrom the time the troupe rolled into the hamlet until it packed up andleft again. From the late 1800s through 1944 (when a fire at the Ringling BrosCircus in Hartford, Conn killed over 140 people, mostly children), thetraveling show was many times the only entertainment the populace wouldsee all year. Twentieth Century-Fox's newest release, "Water ForElephants," chronicles a small piece of this history. And, had this adaptation of the popular Sara Gruen novel, directed byFrancis Lawrence ("Constantine," "I Am Legend") stayed faithful to thisplot line, I could have given it a higher grade; instead, however, itdrifts off into a tepid love triangle between the three leads, Jacob(Robert Paterson of "Twilight" fame), Marlena (Reese Witherspoon, "Walkthe Line") and August (Christoph Waltz, fresh off his Oscar-winningperformance in "Inglorious Basterds").August and Marlena are married. He is the owner of the barelysuccessful Barzini Bros. Circus, while she is the star equestrianperformer. Jacob, whose parents die on his last day as a veterinarianstudent at Cornell, ends up hopping the circus freight train and soonbecomes the resident vet. Here, he meets a group of rough but lovable roustabouts, is ordered tobecome the trainer to the circus' newest attraction (Rosie theelephant) and falls in love with Marlena. He also witnesses the crueltyAugust exhibits to both animals and humans, especially his wife.Jacob and Marlena try to run away together, but August's goons arealways one step ahead. Then, after a weird conclusion, things arewrapped up in a flashback narrated by Hal Holbrook ("Into the Wild").Waltz and Holbrook are wonderful in this picture, the former seethingin delightful wickedness, yet holding on to some humanity; while thelatter revels sweetly in a very small role. As the unfaithful wife andcircus star, though, Witherspoon seems tentative and almost totallymiscast. Worse yet, although he gives it his best, Patterson is dark, broodingand as unemotional as the pasty, undead teenage vampire character hehas cut his acting teeth on. It's like watching a cigar store Indiantrying to impersonate James Dean."Water For Elephants" is a three-ring affair with one of the ringsremoved. Marketing this movie - "The Notebook" meets "Circus World" -as a love story is a mistake. The is no love story. There's no lovebetween Marlena and August and there's certainly no sparks (orchemistry) between Marlena and Jacob. That's sad, because I wanted to give this movie a higher mark. Thescenes with Waltz and Holbrook, as well as the wonderful cinematographyand nice period detail and sequences with Rosie were terrific. I justwish there was more elephants and less infidelity. That might have truly made this one of the "greatest shows on earth,"or at least one of the better films of the year.

If you were a fan of Sara Gruen's gritty and romantic novel, don't expect to see it in this film. Though visually stunning, the film's miscasting woes and lack of real chemistry makes the film seem like a shallow, pale version of the gripping novel.Witherspoon and Pattinson are both able actors, but they make an odd pairing with little sizzle on screen. It is doubtful the two were ever auditioned together before being offered the roles, if they had, perhaps the casting would have been different. Witherspoon does her best with what she's given, and Pattinson, despite being the main character, has very little dialogue compared to the enormous amount of closeups featuring hard glares and longing stares. The film's only real bright spot is Waltz as the vicious ringmaster, August. Waltz is fantastic as ever, but far too reminiscent of his role in Inglorious Bastards. The movie cheapens the depth and complexity of the book's August by senselessly marrying him with the novel's disreputable ringmaster Uncle Al, ignoring his kind and charismatic moments, and never questioning his mental stability. This makes it far to easy for the audience to see August as unequivocally malicious, rather than making the audience sit with the discomfort of being in his wife Marlena's shoes: adoring the charismatic and vibrant August and fearing his violent and psychotic side. In my opinion, it is August's two sides that make him both pitiable and terrifying, allowing for a more complex experience, emphasizing the truth that there is no black and white, good or evil, but shades of gray in between.Witherspoon's Marlena is performed as well as possible, seeing as the script writers seem to have ripped the spine right out of the poor character. In classic Hollywood style, the script unnecessarily rewrites details of the story to make her seem like a broken damsel in distress just waiting for someone like Pattinson's Jacob to rescue her. Without the sass and courage of the book's Marlena, it is confusing why Jacob would be interested in her other than the old sexist notion that he needs to "fix" her.If you haven't read the book, then what a fun adventure this film must be. And I admit that at times I too was swept up in the grandeur of the set dressing. But the film manages to trade in the book's gripping and complex love triangle for the ease of a domestic abuse rescue story that simply rubs the wrong way.

This review is from: Water For Elephants (Amazon Instant Video) At first I did not want to see this movie, waited till it came out on DVD to watch it. Now I am glad finally I did see it. The cast, crew & story line of this movie are memorable, touching & really easy to relate to on some levels. Some parts of the movie were incredibly hard to watch & brought me to tears, but that only plays into the part of being memorable & touching. This movie really gives you a chance to explore human emotions, the darker side of reality & what it means to have power with no boundaries.

This was one of the best stories, great filming, direction, sets, characters, wardrobe... every step of the way, it builds to be a greatmovie. I really wish an Oscar had been in the mix for this movie.Robert Pattinson was fantastic, not only does he look very good, he isan excellent actor.....but so too is Reese Witherspoon and all thecharacter actors used...The movie really does a great job of showing us the way circus's usedto be. There were many circus animals used and the scenes with thoseanimals and Pattinson were a real pleasure to watch. Our family reallyenjoyed this movie and we plan to watch it again today.

**SPOILER ALERT**When the parents die in a car crash, an evil banker forecloses on the family home. Father has mortgaged the place to pay tuition for son to Cornell vet school and now it's the Depression and people are paying with chickens not cash. Son quits vet school, joins the circus and falls in love with an elephant and another man's wife. Circus owner treats his wife, the elephant, and the circus workers shabbily. Eventually, they all rebel. One wonders why it has taken them so long. Or maybe it just seems like forever.

I should say I've not read the book yet, so I cannot compare/contrast the two. This movie is okay. But that's about it. You'll probably get a case of déjà vu while watching, as I for one felt like I'd seen it (or various parts of it) a million times before. There's an old 1930s circus. There's a guy who loves a girl he cannot have (or can he?). There's a jerk (the girl's husband). And there's an elephant (really the one character who steals the movie).Honestly, that about sums up the whole story. Boy runs away with the circus. Boy sees girl that he just has to have. Boy find out that girl is married to the boss. Boy gets offered job that will have him working with said girl. Boy quickly learns that boss is a jerk to everyone, especially to the circus animals and his own wife. The whole thing is actually being recounted by the now elderly man, to an employee of a circus after he's stood up by his son.The jerk boss performs acts of violence that are incredibly difficult to watch (Christop Waltz has perfected playing a jerk). And as I've already said the elephant is the star here. Hal Holbrook plays the elderly version of the main character in such a sweet way. Even still, overall, it's just okay at its best. You'd not walk away feeling as though you'd just seen the worst movie ever, but there are better movies / tv shows to spend your time on, even better 1920s/30s circus ones. If that's what you're in the mood for, I'd suggest the tv show Carnivale over this.

This review is from: Water For Elephants (Amazon Instant Video) Who doesn't enjoy an old-fashioned love story. The variety of characters adds even more entertainment, and the acting was very believable.

Readers, fear not. This is one adaption that lives up to the book.Water for Elephants is pure beauty. Despite the fact that it takesplace during the Depression, it makes you almost wish you lived duringthe '30s.One reason is the costumes. They are wonderfully done, as well as themakeup. Another is the eye candy. No, I'm not talking about RobertPattinson(though he looks as gorgeous as ever). I'm talking about thebreathtaking cinematography, courtesy of Rodrigo Prieto. While the leads(Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon, Christoph Waltz)all turn in GREAT performances, the real star here is Tai the elephant. She plays Rosie, the newest addition to The Benzini Bros. MostSpectacular Show on Earth, who is brought in in hopes of taking TheBenzini Bros. circus to a new level(particularly to the level ofRingling Bros.).As per usual, there are quite a few changes that may or may notirritate the readers. It all depends on the person. One that I felt wasan improvement upon the book, however, was the combining of August andUncle Al. I honestly didn't miss Al one bit.Water for Elephants is a beautiful, enchanting, mesmerizing must-see.

I loved the book Water for Elephants and the colorful world created by Sara Gruen, so I mean no disrespect to her story. Unfortunately, this adaptation left a lot to be desired. I have no problem with Reese Witherspoon, she was alright as Marlena. By biggest problem is with Robert Pattinson and his one-note performance. I found him to be very monotone and void of facial expressions, kind of like he is in Twilight. With another actor in the lead role, I think this could have been an Oscar-caliber film. I would have loved to see someone like Eddie Redmayne as Jacob.

i loved the book & i loved the movie, & will go see it a few moretimes, taking many friends with me. YES, it's that good!!! When onegoes to the movie made from the book one loves, it's always with a bitof trepidation, knowing how things can turn out. KUDOS to RichardLaGravenese for writing an excellent screenplay from Sara Gruen'sexcellent novel! We were pleasantly surprised how well they includedall of the most important points of Depression Era Circus life (and thestory line), and happy that it was PG-13, and not the R of the book(which means we can take a larger variety of folks to the movie.) Each of the actors was excellent, capturing the true feeling of thecharacters in the book.Loved the animals, tho we missed the Yak at the end of the story.....and Tai was a FABULOUS Rosie!!! i am POSITIVE that the reviewers whohave been giving this excellent movie bad reviews have NOT read thebook in it's entirety, or are just Bah-Humbugs when it comes to givinga terrific movie a look-see with OPEN EYES. i was so very anxious tosee it for myself so i would know the TRUTH about the movie!!! Anyone who has read and loved the book will love this movie. Anyone whohas been to a circus, or knows the history of the circus life over thegenerations, will greatly appreciate Water For Elephants.WELL DONE, ALL of the cast and crew!!!!!!

This movie had a tremendous amount of mood and depth to it. It was a great read, and it stuck nicely to the story-line, time-permitting. I am not too big on this sort of movie, but this was done very well, with great characters and strong performances by all. I'd actually like to watch it again. I may even buy the DVD.
