PRIEST, a post-apocalyptic sci-fi thriller, is set in an alternate world -- one ravaged by centuries of war between man and vampires. The story revolves around a legendary Warrior Priest from the last Vampire War who now lives in obscurity among the other downtrodden human inhabitants in walled-in dystopian cities ruled by the Church. When his niece is abducted by a murderous pack of vampires, Priest breaks his sacred vows to venture out on a quest to find her before they turn her into one of them. He is joined on his crusade by his nieces boyfriend, a trigger-fingered young wasteland sheriff, and a former Warrior Priestess who possesses otherworldly fighting skills.

Priest is stylishly conceived and has the odd decent action sequence but it's also derivative, curiously flat and neither as scary nor as much fun as it should have been.

Honestly I haven't expected this movie to be good, 5-6/10 maybe. But incombination with good acting, story and visual effects  could be agood choice to kill the Sunday afternoon. Was it?- NO!Why? Acting is poor. Story is so shallow and boring. They stole theidea from Equilibrium. Cam Gigandet is so annoying with his acting andchildish questions all of the time. The movie simply can't make youwatch it for 15 minutes without thinking: "WTF?" or laughing. PaulBettany wasn't enough to raise the quality of the movie.Unfortunately...Positive sides. Visually really nice! Paul Bettany, sometimes. Good 3D.At the end, I haven't rated it 2 only because Paul Bettany appeared inthe movie, and because of the overall visual appearance.

A friend and I went to see Priest to spend a lazy afternoon, neglectingto read any reviews. Now after the fact, I am surprised by the negativereaction of some critics, when there is far worse junk out there.Clearly the film makes overt references, not only to other films, butto many cultural forces outside of the movies. If absolute originalitywere to be the hallmark of greatness in movies, clearly it would be theend of commercial Hollywood. And still, works of ostensible high artborrow right and left in our times and throughout history. Therefore, referential elements are not in themselves a mark of lack of quality. Although clearly borrowing concepts from Catholicism, somehow the filmstill did not offend me, perhaps because the history and symbolism ofthe Catholic Church is far more complex than anything we see in thismovie. In spite of all the cross-references, the movie simply works asentertainment, in a sleek, coherent and economical way that should becommended. Paul Bettany is an outstanding actor. Clearly he should bein artistically more ambitious projects, but that is not the fault ofPriest--quite the opposite! The production design is superior. I wouldpay to see the sequel, where the director may be persuaded to revealmore complexity and nuance in the characters...so, I am lookingforward!

I truly wanted to love this movie, the premise is unique, the actionwas decent, and the cast wasn't half bad, but the execution was awful.Even some of the larger names from this movie (Karl Urban especially)seemed that they didn't really care about the role, and it showed inthe quality of their acting. Certain elements of the story made nosense. The western feel in the middle section seemed insanely random, and didn't contribute to the plot one bit. The characters were shallow, there was little to no character development. On the other hand, there were things i liked about the movie. Theaction sequences were pretty good, the costume design was amazing, especially on Karl Urban's character, and the special effects didn'tleave me disappointed. Overall, this movie deserves anywhere between a5 and a 6. If you enjoy artistic, stylized action, this is the moviefor you. However if you enjoy epic story lines with great characterdevelopment, stay far far away.

Went to see this last week along with both female and male friends, everyone came out of the cinema cursing the name of the friend thatwanted to go see it. Perhaps one of the worst Films I have ever seen.Only good parts was the Anime at the start of the Film showingalternate history and lot's of gore and certain scenes where the 3Dworked (ash falling in main city) But unless you are a 10 year old kidthe rest of the film is boring and has some of the worst dialogue. Somequotes that had me and my friends scoffing include "Point A meet PointFu*king B" and " you would make a good Priest" Truly a horrid film andnot worth the price of ticket! please heed this warning STAY AWAY FROMPRIEST!

Priest had its good moments but it never took off for me. Being a huge fan of vampires, the plot was promising....a new and improved group of vampires attacking an already demolished world and only fighters who were actual Priests had the strength to fight them. However, somewhere along the way the director missed his mark. The dialogue needed revision, the vampires weren't shown attacking innocent people enough, and the Priest lacked in being a good action hero. I found myself greatly disappointed at the end of the movie.

Having a look at some of the reviews, I must confess, I was quiteskeptical. Therefore I am more than happy, that in my eyes, "Priest"defended it self. It's just like that - imagine Judge Dredd with his awesome bike, imagine a megapolis city closed out in a middle of deserted wasteland. It's the same in here although less candy. More gruesome. And our herois not a judge, he's a priest. Not your typical kind of one. He is awarrior with only one purpose, to kill vampires. So we've got the dark city (which looks at times - exactly like thatone from Blade Runner including Asian type umbrellas), and the sunnywasteland (which looks oddly similar to what Mad Max2 and abovepresented). Would you believe that around 70% of the movie is kind of avampire western? Just like "Cowboys&Aliens" were the alien typewestern. But it clicks. The story is rather simple, but the actors manage to keep it at adecent level. There's some (quite a bit) action, some nice visual fx,and creative approach to fights (motorbikes stand off fight was cool).Editor made a few mistakes, when what characters say and do doesn'tnecessarily add up, but those are minor. All in all, it's worth seeing and definitely better than overpriced yettotally idiotic "Daybreakers". What you see here, is what you get.Don't expect twists, moral disputes or whatever - it's just sort of acomic flick with nice visuals.7/10

This review is from: Priest (Unrated Version) [Blu-ray 3D] (Blu-ray) I can understand what everyone is saying here, that is depending on what you are comparing this movie to. People are either not true sci-fi/fantasy/horror afficionados or they have set their standards too high for anyone to meet them.1.) I am fairly jaded as to hollywood plots. But this one kept me glued to the screen the whole movie.2.) There is a lot of action and good-ol-fashioned butt kicking which I love.3.) I was sincerely scared at times in this movie.4.) The main characters played their parts extremely well and added whatever depth the plot might have been lacking.5.) This is a dark movie but very well done. The whole apocalyptic atmosphere lends itself well to the movie.6.) If you are a devout Catholic and easily offended, don't watch because it is definitely a biting satire on religion being used to manipulate people.7.) If you liked Van Helsing, if you liked Bram Stoker's Dracula you will LOVE this movie.8.) The cinematography is EXCELLENT. 3D in this movie ROCKS.9.) This movie is a CLASSIC.

This review is from: Priest (Unrated Version) [Blu-ray 3D] (Blu-ray) This movie was sadly underwhelming the blu-ray looked pretty good but there wasn't much to look at in terms of graphics to many bland scenes. Also the story just dragged on the putrid plot. Sad...

PRIEST (2011) **1/2 Paul Bettany, Karl Urban, Cam Gigandet, Maggie Q,Lily Collins, Lily Collins, Brad Dourif, Stephen Moyer, ChristopherPlummer, Alan Dale, Madchin Amick. Post-apocalyptic horror film basedon Minn-Woo Hyung's (who adapted with co-scribe Cory Goodman) Koreangraphic novels about the titular elite vampire slayers  Bettany stoicas always  out to destroy a new, powerful strain of the blood-thirstyundead with one caveat: his long-lost daughter Collins has beenkidnapped by nefarious Urban (aping many of Clint Eastwood's mannerismsfrom the 'spaghetti Westerns' of yore). While it is refreshing to seethe creatures of the night rightfully depicted as ravenous monsters andnot primadonna , glistening teenagers the storyline is too familiarwith few surprises, albeit a nice but short-lived performance byveteran loon Dourif as a latter-dayRenfeld-in-the-process-snake-oil-salesman and the linear plottings ofTHE SEARCHERS (!) makes an ideal hybrid of western and chiller flick .Director Scott Charles Stewart manages to keep things lively in aRESIDENT EVIL manner  i.e. slo-mo kills. The 3-D is so-so but the gistis given.

This is a wild sort of Steam-punk (train and all) alternative reality in the future. The movie rolls off the blocks with some intense action. After a brief narration to get the viewer up to speed. It then flips over to a calm family setting, which is then quickly shattered. What makes this movie a cut above the typical hack and slash films is that it is able to steal away moments of intense emotional depth between the characters. This adds texture to the film and makes it a truly enjoyable film.

some people thought fast five is five star ,yet this is a two star no way osund like some kind of prejudice. this is a four for action

I absolutely love this film because I can watch it. Why? Because vampires are again monsters. They are slime ridden, hive hidden, and REALLY hungry. After glittering, vegan vampires wetting the pants of every Twilight novel enthusiast I was just about ready for something like this. Something where the world sucks, vampires are a totally unattractive menace, and there are kick butt heroes out to right the wrongs of it all. Plus our heroes don't all end up dead at the end to serve as a sacrificial memo on how hard life is; we got that notice in the beginning and get to enjoy this without having baggage at the end (for once). The movie is deep if you let it go there, in brief flits of expressed anguish that seem poorly written but the actors did their very best handling them for what they were... Caveats aside, it doesn't waste its time; this is a plot driven movie with a central theme, not a steamy drama - Save the city and Save the girl, end-note! Not a new way to ride out a flick but all in all there is no need to re-invent the wheel here. Rather, this movie brings back that nice Sci-Fi/Fantasy sense of impending doom, a hero on the horizon and hope in some mangled format when the dust settles. The setting has an eerie air about it, with that grittiness that seems to feel very real. This is rather a high-tech world still trying to figure itself out, not unlike our own. It has the semi-comforts of authoritarian Church run cities and a wild-west themed outside, somewhat reminiscent of Mad Max but trying hard for a real wild-west theme (think, maybe, Firefly-esque, without the good blending of genres). It tried hard for the post-apocalyptic biblical-sands kinda thing and really did accomplish it in some very nice CGI that comes off beautifully crafted. No race for gas and (thank god) no Thunderdome, even if there's some vehicles driving around in the dirt it spares you fuel woes, heavy political undertones, no horrible costumes (really, the cross on the forehead was done well) and no reluctant heroes. It did slam the Catholic Church - albeit a sort of side note stab.As for the actors - Paul Bettany was cast perfectly as the lead; Karl Urban takes on a villain role (loved him in DOOM; but here it's really nice to see him as a bad guy!); and Maggie Q was another nice choice, although I WISH they would have made her wear a bra (could it POSSIBLY have been cold on set or does someone NOT understand how to make a shirt?!). Anyway, Cam Gigandet as Hicks was a seemingly poor role and has received some flack for his participation, his character is headstrong and eager but more the panic attack sidekick and his scripted lines were CRAPTASTIC, while his delivery was so-so. In the end, Cam was good eye candy but nobody, not even Karl Urban, matches the fact skinny Bettany makes a thrillingly attractive action hero and his acting makes him 1000x more believable than Cam's in this movie. I wish that the character Hick's had been more emotionally stable and that they'd let him express his skills without making him always seem like the cabana boy in need of a rescue (or neatly delivered plot-sequence-bail-out by falling off the train because, lets face it, he would have died)... Actually, they could have graciously killed off Hicks and nobody would have noticed, probably not even Lucy -- we REALLY should have gotten a look at their relationship before she was abducted, in my humble opinion but it is an action flick so graces are granted. Lucy was played by Lily Collins, who was feisty, could scream (which wasn't her entire role but kinda was her entire script), and she fought well with flatware...All in all - I am happy. And I say watch it if you're tired of cuddly vampires and sissy heroes that are under the age of consent. This has none of those things and all the other stuff you want. And it looks great!

Bela Lugosi, where are you? For the youngsters with ever-shorteningattention spans, I see vampires have now been tailored down to animatedCGI creature-things with bald heads and extended wide-mouthes whichroar through their pointed teeth, hopping around on all fours quicklyand randomly, bouncing off the walls like Walt Disney grasshoppers on anever-ending sugar rush. The lead character always wears a hat and along coat like Hugh Jackman did in VAN HELSING, and there's a lot offlying about and leaping. Oh, and good dialogue is not importantanymore, and neither are cinematic colors ...gray and steel is suitablydrab enough. As usual, it's no longer even desired to strain your brainin attempting to follow any kind of "plot" by the time you get fiveminutes into this thing.0 out of 4

Greetings from Lithuania.Just watched "Priest" yesterday, and this is a one disappointing film.It has a good actors P.Bettany, Maggie Q and K.Urban, but that does'tsave this movie from being somehow boring and stupid. Now I know that aSci-Fi horror movie, witch is based on comics isn't supposed to be veryrealistic or smart, but this one just doesn't work. But there is ascene on the end, that is simply the most UNREALISTC episode in a moviehistory: train, that moves ~100-200 km/h(i suppose) is hit with a(futuristic) motorcycle which moves with a speed 240 miles + the HUDGEbombs explodes on the rail and guess what - the Priest on a motorcycleand a Priest on the top of a train survives!!! Simple as that!!! Likethey're some kind a fxxking supermen! I thing, You just HAVE to REALLYREALLY believe in God if You want to survive THAT one. Overall, You can skip this one, there are a better things to do in asummer.

If you are into the silly action movies like I am then you will like this movie. It is kinda along the same lines as Blade with that tax cheat westly snipes.I liked the movie because it was well done for that kind of movie. IT is not a greand production but is a good action movie if you like the good guy taking out creatures.

This review is from: Priest (Unrated Version) [Blu-ray 3D] (Blu-ray) A great science fiction thriller with lots of action and blood shed. The 3D effects were limited to certain sections of the movie. If I were to rate this on 3D effects it would only have been 1 star

The 2011 cinematic feature 'Priest' joins the ever growing list of vampire films glutting the theaters. While there's really nothing new being offered here, it does turn out to be an overall enjoyable way to while away 87 minutes of viewing time. It has a unmistakable similarity in style and and temperament to the 2003 film 'Underworld' starring Kate Beckinsale. In 'Priest' our alluring femme fatale has been replaced by a fearless clergyman / warrior played by Paul Bettany who scowls and glares his way through a myriad of supernatural foes as he marches toward the Vampire Queens' nest. If you happen to be one of the many who watched 'Underworld' more for the presence of Beckinsale then the blood-suckers, you'll be happy to know that Bettany is accompanied on his heroic quest by the beautiful and just as deadly Maggie Q. That certainly should make you feel a little better. I don't think 'Priest' is destined to become a classic, but if you like this genre of film you'll find a place for this one in your DVD library. Bettany is great as always, Maggie Q makes a most interesting side-kick and Karl Urban is awesome in the role of Black Hat, one of my favorite bad guys in recent memory. Definitely something you can enjoy watching more than once.

Yes, Priest is very short - It feels more like the length of a TV pilot and is very obviously leaving room for one or more sequels. Annoying, but hardly surprising. Yes, some of the dialogue is very cliche - and Paul Bettany does a bit of Clint Eastwood growling of his lines. Yes the action is over the top unrealistic at times. If this bothers you, you may want to note that vampires don't actually exist and therefore you can check your sense of realism at the door. The visuals are the best part, the script is a bit weak.I don't understand the people saying Bettany is wooden or that they don't understand the motivations of the characters, they must not have been paying attention. the Priest character is just heavily burdened by his obligation to a church that thanks him for his service and wishes he would just go ahead and die now, along with all of the Priest warriors and is torn between loyalty to it and his former family, which he had to abandon in order to become a Proest in the first place. The actors were all well chosen, I found Christopher Plummer's Hierophant type character the most dispensable, but I'm not sure that's the actor's fault, the character is pretty much unlikeable. I did find myself occasionally wishing like Salt they had changed the whole focus of the movie to female, called it Priestess and shifted Maggie Q to center stage. just a side note, was there a single human being who didn't see the preview moment where the familiar human says, "you don't know what's coming, Priest" and then a vamp jumps onto the screen? that could have been a very cool and effective shocking moment if it hadn't been broadcast ad nauseum beforehand. I just hate when they ruin good setups like that, make up your trailers out of disjointed pieces of the film please, out of sequence so you don't spoil anything. my two cents.

At best, Priest is a passable time-waster. Mostly, it's like watching an extended Gorillaz video.
