It's Casablanca... when you compare it to Valentine's Day.

Kate Hudson has had bad luck for a long time. I miss the Hudson who wasPenny Lane. Where did she go? I'll tell you where: Fool's Gold, Bridewars, and, just recently, Something Borrowed. Something borrowed is upthere with one of the years worst films.Ginnifer Goodwin is the likable one. She has just turned 30, and shehas always had a crush on her best friend's(Kate Hudson) fiancé(CollinEgglesfield). So one night, they do it. You know, bang. And from therethey start having affairs and try to keep it a secret.Almost nothing about the film works. The film tries way to hard for usto like Goodwin. She's cute, so how can we not? It tries way too hardfor us to like Goodwin, and way too hard for us to dislike Hudson. Itmakes all of the unrootable characters obnoxious, and to me, it gotunder my skin. There are a lot of very corny moments, and you end up not liking any ofthe characters in the end. The only thing that works about the film isJohn Krasinski, who once again brings comic relief. And even he has aflaw. Krasinski's character is here because... can anyone answer? He'sthere because he John Krasinski? I'm not quite sure. Even with apointless performance, he still nails it.So, overall, Something borrowed is what the title promises. I mean,it's not the worst movie i've ever seen. I mean, if you compare it toThe Ugly truth or Valentine's day, two examples of pure suicide, thenit's not that bad. But its still bad.C-

Pretty much knew I'd like this one

I was pretty sure I'd like this film. Kate Hudson was hilarious in one of my favorite films, "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days." Ginnifer Michelle Goodwin entertained me in "He's Just Not That Into You." I'm a huge "The Office: Season Seven" fan so it's always good to see John Krasinski. And my favorite parts of watching the television show "Reba: Season 6" were more than likely due to Steve Howey. I know sometimes when you get a film with a lot of good actors in it, it's either going to be really good or have too many cooks in the kitchen and be really bad. This film was the first one. Is there anything unique about it? No, not especially. The film reminds me of a movie-length episode of "Friends: The Complete Tenth Season" with an uncomfortable amount of friends having crushes on each other but with a couple more sex buddies. In this film though, the friend who likes the groom-to-be isn't flying to Europe. This one is her very best friend who indirectly blocked a relationship to be. Is Darcy (played by Kate Hudson) wrong for flirting with her best friend Rachel's classmate (Dex, played by Colin Egglesfield), knowing full well Rachel had a crush on Dex? Is Dex wrong for hiding his feelings for Rachel and instead going for Darcy, who later became his fiancee? Or, are neither of them wrong since Rachel didn't really fight for Dex at the time he's single? And what's up with Ethan--is he just a friend or something more with his childhood friends Rachel and Darcy? Although there is plenty of comedy, Marcus is the comic relief we absolutely need when the scenes potentially get a bit too serious or just aren't funny enough. I didn't really get into Claire (played by Ashley Williams), but she did make Ethan (played by John Krasinski) that much more interesting. I really liked the film. It's an easy buy.

Loved it

For a chick flick, it was superb. The chemistry between Ginnifer and Colin was electric. Ethan (don't know his real name) gave an excellent supporting performance.

Worth It?

I read the book when it was first out, related with the characters. Allin all, I thought it was a good movie as far as interpreting the book.I have read all the books and was sure to read them one more timebefore going to the movie so that I had a refreshed comparison in myhead.Yet, I still couldn't help do what I tend to do after a movie and thinkabout how I would have done it. Like have Rachel narrate, or cut outthe part of Dex crying...he looked so awkward and constipated, at leastmake it look like he was really hurt. I wouldn't have made Claire thatbad. The friendship between Rachel and Darcy was true, but I wasn'timpressed with Kate Hudson's performance. It seemed like she had a hardtime getting in touch with her character. She wasn't real until the endof the movie. The beach scene with just Darcy and Dex was awkward forpeople who were getting married, but when they are playing badmintonwas great. Ethan totally stole that scene and many others. He seemed tobe one of the only ones that could make himself the actual character. Iwould have introduced Dex and Rachel's relationship by elaborating onthem, it was about them anyway.I loved that Emily Giffin was actually in the scene where Rachel andMarcus were in the park, with the book 'Something Blue'. I do think itwould be great to keep going because as much as I loved the booked'Something Borrowed', I think that the transition into 'Something Blue'will give you unexpected. So I did enjoy the movie, even going into it with no expectations frombeing disappointed so many times after I read a book turned movie. Ilaughed, I cried, I related to the characters. I walked out of thetheatre feeling good and refreshed. It's more of a drama than romanticcomedy and I think it is worth watching. I will buy the DVD. It will bemy feel good movie.

Good girly fun, entertaining

After reading some negative reviews in some magazine I went to themovie with trepidation. Is it a finely crafted film, with a rivetingscript? No, but it was a good way to enjoy a Sunday afternoon with afriend.Kate Hudson, Gennifer Goodwin do a good job making the friendshipbelievable and warm, which could have been difficult considering theirdifferent temperaments. Colin Egglesfield is so handsome and those eyescan make you forgive a someway stiff performance. John Krasinski stealsthe show though, with his spot on delivery of the best lines in themovie.Be sure to stay until after the credits for a little bonus blip.Hoping they do the next story, John Krasinski would be fabulous.

Not the best, too much swearing

This movie has LOTS of swearing, it would of been alot better and sweeter if they had elimanted that. There was alot of just dumb parts that really had nothing to do with anything. With lots of editing and a different ending, it could of been good. It has a few good parts, but they are few and far between...

Fanaticalaboutfilms Review: Something Borrowed

Something Borrowed follows Rachel (Ginnifer Goodwin) as she meets Dex(Colin Egglesfield) at university where they become best friends withfeelings clearly developing but neither of them acting on saidfeelings. So when Rachel's best friend the selfish and obnoxious Darcy(Kate Hudson) shows up and asks Dex out, Rachel gives her blessing, Dexsays yes and several years later they are engaged to be married. This leaves Rachel distraught for letting Dex slip through her fingersand with the cowardly and wimpish Dex (I'm sure just what ladies lookfor in a man) still conflicted as to what to do next. After Rachel'sbirthday celebrations though, she and Dex end up sleeping together andsupposed hilarity ensues as they try yet again ignore the chemistrybetween them and just let life run its course.Thank god for Ethan (John Krasinski) Rachel's friend who gave a voiceof reason to proceedings by at least attempting to beat some sense intothe main characters who seemed to be oblivious to everything aroundthem. I think my main fault with the movie was the storyline and theway we are supposed to feel for Rachel despite the fact that she didn'tmake a go of it with Dex, everything that happened to her was selfinflicted and she has slept with her best friend's fiancé; and giventhat Darcy isn't a very nice person to say the least that either ofthem hung around with her in the first place. The supporting cast outside the four main characters didn't add to thefilm in any way shape or form. With some movies you get the tokencelebrities who show up for 10 seconds, say a line and then leave againand this is how the rest of the cast felt to me for the entire movie. They were just written in for one line and then would disappear neverto be seen or heard from again.Apart from a few witty remarks here and a bit of slapstick, there wasnot much comedy in the film with the overall feel of it leaning moretowards a drama with a bit of comedy rather than the other way aroundwhich I feel is the better mix for this genre. There was nothing wrongwith the acting with Goodwin and Egglesfield doing their jobs andcreating some chemistry but it was merely a minor consolation whichcan't cover up the rest of the issues highlighted. As romcom's go this was one of the worse that I've seen so much so thateven if your an avid fan of this type of movie you'll have a hard timegetting any pleasure out of watching it. Time to forget about this andmove onto another one.For further reviews feel free to check out:http://www.fanaticalaboutfilms.com

Loved the cast!

I loved the cast! John Krasinski is hilarious and left me laughing the whole way through. Ginnifer is just delightful. Even though it's a premise I can't imagine ever going through, I found myself rooting for each of the characters and loving each of them, even with their faults. This is a great date movie! The girls will love the romance and the guys get tons of comedy to enjoy along the way.

very cute

This review is from: Something Borrowed (DVD) I thought this was a very cute chick flick and would watch it again. This had a good story line and a good ending

This story wasn't the best romance i've ever watched but this movie surely inserted various value and things to be learned in relationship especially for men.

This story wasn't the best romance i've ever watched but this moviesurely inserted various value and things to be learned in relationshipespecially for mens. Many good things can be learned from Ethan and badthings to avoid from Dex. The story isn't one of teenage story becauseits complexity. But, I don't really like the idea of heading forwardfor the past which was done by Rachel and reflectly done by Dex in thismovie. This story is romanticly and dramatically served but not so goodin the end.I'd like to frame my point in Dex figure. Dex is a gorgeous man but notso good in personality. I know it's very hard to choose betweenmarrying Darcy and turning to Rachel. But, that didn't mean he can hangthose two girls like in this movie. Mens have to decide. Girls don'tlike being hung by mens, right? Lessons we could learn from Dex' storyis mens must have the courage to decide and ready to accept theconsequences. Don't be greedy or you'll just fail yourself. Why wouldhe take Darcy since the beginning if he had a crush on Rachel.Err..nonsense.The second thing that we should learn is "don't make too manyassumptions". Dex and Rachel were making assumptions each other thatend their 6 months relationship. They liked each other but assumed theopposite each other. Well, that was another lesson to learn from Dex.Mens probably should have the courage and initiative first. On the other hand, Ethan was a perfect mate for Rachel though shedoesn't wonder him at all. Ethan has a good personality that menseventually should have. Ethan is my favorite character in this story.:)Love may come emotionally but it has to flow both logically andemotionally.

Bad Casting

I've read all of Emily Giffin's books and always feel they are a cut above the average chick-lit. I was anxious to catch the movie although it was poorly rated. Five minutes into it, I could see why. PLEASE Hollywood, stop casting Kate Hudson. The best cast member is John K, but he is poorly supported by the rest. The film was unbearably long or so it seemed, and it was in need of severe editing. Surprisingly, Kate's best scene is when she screams at her BFF; the rest of her cutesy/blonde/hip/cool actions were just plain awful. I did enjoy the scene in the park because Emily Giffin is sitting on the next bench reading her book: Something Blue.

Loved it.

This review is from: Something Borrowed [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) I never write movie reviews but I had to comment on this film--loved it. I did not know all the actors or actresses in this movie, but I took a chance--and am glad that I did. Loved the story and the acting--in fact, I have watched this movie twice in the last couple of days. Knew Kate Hudson and Steve Howey and thought that they did a really good job in their roles. Fell in love with the two love interests even though I had never heard of them or seen them before. Hope they get more good roles.

A decent movie, Recommended

I am a huge movie buff and I was not aware that this was based on abest-selling book in 2005 but I thought this movie was well written andacted. I plan on reading the book. Although each actor did an amazingjob, I do think John Kranski was the shining light in this movie. Ialso was moved by the performance of Colin Egglesfield. There is onescene outside of a bar where you can see his torment; he doesn't sayany words but his emotions are written all over his face and it wasamazing. I could personally relate to being a relationship or making adecision out of fear and not taking the risk at achieving truehappiness. I think that is the real message or reality behind thismovie not whether or not Rachel or Darcy were right or wrong, good orbad. This movie reminded me that we all have choices in life about whatmakes us happy and we can only blame ourselves if we deny our truedesires because we feel we are not deserving (Rachel) or if we areaggressive and abusing others in order to achieve it (Darcy). I thoughtthis movie was very thought provoking about what motivates you or makesyou happy and if you are living your life for others or yourself. Itbrought a lot of emotions out of me including anger, anticipation, andsadness. I think we have all been Darcy or Rachel at some point in ourlives and that is relatable. I recommend this movie.I did some research about the book after I left the movie on wikipediaand I will read the book, Something Borrowed, and there is a sequel,Something Blue.

a movie worth seeing it.

I love this movie. In every situation it shows how difficult their livesare, like friendship and be with your true love, each feeling can't beexpressed completely because everyones feeling is based on another'sfeeling. So they keep them to them selves so they don't hurt the onesthey love. Each character has something special or a secret that shareswith us or reveals at the end,a secret that can change many peopleslives in that story. We see that true love never dies and thatfriendship is difficult but if it has a strong bond based on love itcould last even if things get a bit out of order.I loved eachactor/actress performance. It is sure one of my favorite movies!Irecommend it for people that want to watch a romantic movie with ameaning.

I really liked this film. Critics wrong again.

Intriguing plot. Good character development. Actors did a fine job. Very entertaining. Good chick flick... critics never seem to like any of the chick flicks, so what else is new?

Guilty pleasure

This review is from: Something Borrowed [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) Movie was good even though you are cheering for a couple to break up. I like that the okay looking girl gets the guy.

lilicedude227 29 April 2012

Different but not different enough

While this isn't exactly like every other romantic comedy out there itis similar. The premise, A good girl who is kinda cute (Goodwin) isovershadowed by her hot and vapid best friend (Hudson) and loses hercollege crush to Hudson. Hudson ends up engaged to the man and Goodwin is jealous and wants him. This film deals with friendship on different levels, girl girlfriendships, guy girl friendships. It also deals with adultery andmorals which the characters morals are very low. The problem with thismovie is that Hudson and the guy who plays her fiancé are veryunlikeable. Hudson while written unlikeable still does nothing funny orgood for the movie. The fiancé guy is a pretty wooden actor and isholding down the other actors he works with.John Krazinski is the best part of the whole movie, even though notevery one liner is funny, he seems to give the best performance. Im adude and took my mom to see this movie on Mother's Day, she liked it,but I could tell it was just another average rom com. Ginnifer and JohnKrazinski are good in the movie but that doesn't save the rest of themovie.

alkistis-ever 28 April 2012

Loved it!

OK, I can understand what they're all complaining about. I mean it'sabout this guy who can't decide if he wants to marry his longtimefiancée or break it off and be with the one he truly loves. But, comeon, isn't this what the majority of us would do? Plus, he was concernedabout his mother's health. I don't know, maybe I liked it because I canrelate to Rachel's character(my best friend too has the "charisma" ofalways having everything working out for her and gets all theattention, but love her nonetheless). I admit the ending was a bitweird. It was quite dramatic but I didn't expect a comedy. I mean itdoesn't look like a movie with many laughs from the trailer.(althoughJohn krasinski was really funny) So people who complain about thisdon't really have a say on the matter. The trailer says it all. Also, there was this moment where Rachel tells her true feelings to Dex and Ipersonally felt really awkward imagining me being in her shoes. True,Colin Egglesfield's acting was a bit bland but I think it worked outfine for the movie! I would watch it again, I really would. Especiallyon a rainy night, eating pasta and drinking wine. Loved it.

Wait for Redbox!

This review is from: Something Borrowed (Amazon Instant Video) I am disappointed in the movie's ending. The movie was good and the actors performed well but the script is lacking. Wait for Redbox to have it and watch it on a rainy day.

Great girls' night movie

This movie is great for an evening with the girls. I saw it in the theatre with a good friend and we laughed a lot. John Krasinski is hilarious, Goodwin and Hudson are likeable and the male lead a nicely subtle fellow (realistic for the part) and easy on the eyes. Given the protagonist's position, I would've had feelings for both guys. It was fun to follow the plot and guess where events may turn. The story followed a path of enjoyable frustration (with some character choices) and it was entertaining the whole way through. Worth watching, especially if you like the actors and/or romantic comedies.
