This review is from: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (DVD) Well, we hadn't seen this movie in the theatre, but had loved all the other ones. This one disappointed us, really bogged down in places. The best part was the mermaid. Johnny Depp gave his usual great performance and Penelope Cruz was very good. We've watched it twice now, but probably won't watch it again.

I know that there were a lot of worries about this film before it wasreleased but I'm grad to say that for me this film overcame all ofthem. On stranger Tides doesn't set out to beat the original trilogybut instead it offers a great sequel that offers more of the Piratescharm while feeling fresh and different at the same time. This film issimilar to the original classic by the way that it offers an easy tofollow plot, simple clever comedic moments and that SPOLER - The badguy actually dies at the end of film - End of Spoiler. But it alsofeels fresh due to brand new crews, new settings and Johnny Deppportraying Captain Jack having the love interest for the first time inthe Pirates series which he portrays perfectly. So this sequel is notjust a commercial exploit (though it did very well at the Box Office)it gives the fans a fresh Pirates of the Caribbean adventure.

This review is from: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (DVD) I bought this for my grand daughter for a Christmas present and I know she will love it. It arrived sooner than promised and there is no problem with it as far as I know. Thank you for delivering it quickly so I could cross one more thing off my list!

Flick Reviews Wes Yunker Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger TidesMy hopes for the new Pirates of the Caribbean film was average at best.First of all there was the fact that Gore Verbinski did not return tomake this fourth installment. Secondly, no Orlando Bloom and no KeiraKnightly. I do agree that there story had been spent up and they livedhappily ever after but in all reality Johnny Depp as the infamousCaptain Jack Sparrow is what I would call a supporting role. Thereneeds to be that straight man to even it out. And that is how I endedup feeling when watching At Stranger Tides. It was as if all thevillains and great supporting cast of the first three films were havinga separate spin off adventure. Sure I love Sparrow and Barbosa but notas leads. I'm not saying that they should have brought back Bloom andKnightly and I'm also not saying that they should have brought someother good looking male and female leads to take their place. So theywere just screwed from the beginning in that sense. The second issuewith the films was the villain. The notorious Pirate known only asBlackbeard (Ian McShane) did not in any way measure up to the villainsin the first three Pirates movies. You don't see him at first andyou're waiting wondering what this guy is going to be like. And thenwhen he finally makes his long awaited entrance you may be somewhatdisappointed; I know I was. I wasn't afraid of him, I didn't find himthe least bit threatening, and could someone please explain to me howhe has the ability to control the magical movement of everything inthis ship by just waving his sword. And I would also love to know howhe has the ability to capture gigantic ships and store them in tinyglass bottles. These are two things that are never explained in thefilm. We know why Barbosa turns into a skeleton in the moonlight and weknow why The Flying Dutchmen has a tentacle face heart beats outside ofhis chest, but what the hell makes Blackbeard so magical? I would havebeen fine with that if it was explained. But I must say with its flawsit was a very entertaining flick. Quite better than the third which isstill my least favorite and still not nearly as good as the first two(the second, Dead Man's Chest being my favorite of the wholefranchise). I must praise the new director Rob Marshall ( Chicago,Nine) there was never a single moment when I felt that this movie wasby a different director. It had the same look and feel as Verbinskigave to the first three. The action (entertaining as it sometimes was)often times seemed a little too much like a time filler. There has beengreat action scenes from the Pirates franchise that have stood out inmy head but in this film most where pretty forgettable. The greatestscene in the film was most defiantly the mermaid scene. I won't revealanything all I'll say is that it was the greatest moment of tension inthe whole film. And of course Johnny was good as always as JackSparrow. It's the same old Jack; I don't need to say any more. A greatnew addition was Penelope Cruz. She did a great job as Angelica, a notto be reckoned with con artist and Sparrow's former lover who joins thecast on this fun, entertaining, just not all that satisfyinginstallment of Pirates of the Caribbean. 3 ½ out of 5

I didn't see the show until it came out on disc, mostly because I had not liked the 2nd and 3rd movies. I did enjoy is one though. It had more of the romp and fun of the first movie and less of the battle scenes and scary make up of the previous two. While I missed Will and Elizabeth, the movie was fine without them. Of course, it looks like they are hopeful to keep the franchise going, so we'll see what the next installment may bring. I did get the 5 disc set, but I bought it at a local store where I could use my $5 Disney Movie Rewards coupon and then get the $5 rebate from Pirate's Booty snack mix (and since I don't need the 3D disc, I'm going to sell that to someone who does)- makes the $29 price tag much more reasonable.

My boys and I are huge Pirates of the Caribbean fans. On Stanger Tides is a great installation in the series. Penelope Cruz makes a fine pirate. Love it!

The infamous addition of mermaids was the best part in the entire film.It was very reminiscent of the powerful underwater march of the deadfrom the first film.Lets move onto the acting. Most of it was decently solid but IanMcShane as the villain, Black Beard stole the show. He actually seemedlike the only one who cared to make the film interesting. Anothernewcomer to the series was Penelope Cruz. She was nothing fantastic butcompletely necessary to bring in a much needed sex appeal to the film.Geoffrey Rush returned as Barbosa, I felt he was very confused as to ifhe was a bad guy or good guy which caused his acting to seem veryindifferent. There were a few scenes that you knew he was having funbut otherwise he was just a drag. And of course Johnny Depp reprizedhis role as the witty fun loving Captain Jack Sparrow. Again he had hismoments just like Barbosa that were fun and creative but he even cameup a little lackluster in certain scenes. The story was super simple, which I guess is understandable consideringthe convoluted mess of 2 and 3.There was an unnecessary sub plot thatnever got resolved, which I wish they spent a little more time on andmade it a little darker. I am not going to spoil anything though, butyou will see what I am talking about when you see the film. As you waitfor the scene after the credits you want it to be the conclusion tothis sub plot but nope. The climax could have been a bit more climaticand more exciting, but I guess they did what they could. Most of theaction happens in the dark so I would not recommend the 3D transfer ofit. I saw it in 2D and I thought the 3D wouldn't be worth it.Marshall did a decent job directing. It was nothing special anddefinitely not Gore Verbinski. The way the film turned out, it lookedlike the director was even bored while shooting.

There's nothing really wrong with the latest Pirates film, but it stillfails to gather any real steam. Here's why:Characters: The real disappointment here is Blackbeard. Apparently hecaptured the Black Pearl, but we never see that. Apparently he's anotorious pirate and is feared, but we never see that either. The firstthree films all had good antagonists. We saw Barbossa and his men inaction. We saw Davy Jones and how he'd become corrupted. We saw theEast India trading company and it's ruthless ways. We never seeanything of Blackbeard. That alone almost ruins the film.Keira Knightly and Orlando Bloom also do not return for the fourthinstallment, which sucks mightily. It's not the same without them.Plot: Why is Jack Sparrow on another adventure? He has no real motivehere. There's some weak attempt to do so with someone impersonatinghim, which makes no sense at all, but the premise is flawed. Without areal reason, well, there's no reason.UPDATE: I noticed that I missed the reason Jack is apparently on thisquest: Penelope Cruz and whether or not he loves her. Well, that's nota particularly good reason, and certainly not a compelling one.SFX: okay, nothing amazing like the first three films. The real reason: why this film sucks a bit? The script/story is weak. The basic idea is okay - the continuing adventures of Jack Sparrow andwhat not - but the story is poorly told. As I said, there's no reasonfor Jack to go on this adventure. He's really just along for the ride, and it ruins the film. Blackbeard's reason is okay, but notparticularly good. The other characters largely don't matter in thisregard. So, to summarise, the main problem is that while it's okay, it's reallyjust a poorly written, tacked-on new film. All the basic ingredientsare there, but it fails to make an impression. Not bad, but average.5 out of 10.

I throughly enjoyed Pirates 1 and 2, but felt three was drifting offtoo much.. this one is the worst yet.It starts off OK, wonderful sets of 18th century London and has thetypical Pirates action from the very beginning. The first 15 minutes orso are quite entertaining however it then drifts into a disconnectedstory (losely based on several factual characters) and the continuationof the Jack Sparrow story. Not wishing to spoil, but it becomes all abit too supernatural and ridiculous, there are moments of humour butfew and far between. The location is clearly Hawaii and does not lookremotely Caribbean which was rather annoying, perhaps it should havebeen called pirates of the Pacific.Anyway, all that aside this is a poor reflection of the first two filmsand honestly it was disappointing, somewhat laboured and one couldn'thelp feel it's A sour end to what should have remained a trilogy.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides follows the same formula as the first three movies, monsters, treasure and swashbuckling, but it do not manage to live up to the awesomeness of the first trilogy. The story this time around is that the Spanish, the English and Captain Blackbeard all want the fountain of youth so three ships set sail. Jack Sparrow get involved with this and the race in on, who will get to the fountain first. Now this is not a bad movie, it is entertaining but the plot lack the twists and turns that made the first three movies so fun. This movie suffer from the beating a dead horse for money syndrome. The first trilogy rounds of and ends the story nicely, however as a result of that both Elizabeth Swann and Will Turner was taken out of the picture, now I am glad those that made this film did not decide to ruin that ending and bring those two back, however them missing from the character list give Jack Sparrow very few balancing points and also drives the number of sub plots and plot twists down to almost nothing. Yes they do bring in some new characters but the chemistry just is not there. The fact of the matter is, this movie never needed to be made, the original trilogy have one, contained storyline, that ends. This movie is just made so Disney can milk a few more bucks out of their franchise. Now as for the humor, a big part of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies are the humor, and yes this movie to was funny, but while I in the first trilogy would laugh so hard my eyes would water up, this one was humerus at times but they tried to hard, with over acting and very contrived situations, many of which just where not funny, several times I could not suspend my disbelief because the acting was just bad, not the entire movie mind you bit in some of the scenes, it was like if Disney just said, ah people will buy this film anyway, it is a best selling franchise let us just not give a *beep* about if a scene turns out bad, let us just churn it out anyway, the movie is sloppy. Now I am not saying that Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides is a bad movie, it have many good scenes, the action is entraining, the story is good and the special effects is often very well done, especially during the mermaid battle. (it is like Disney got tired of hearing how sweet and innocent their mermaids are, for these will rip your face of an enjoy it.) If you like the first three movies in the series I am sure you will enjoy this, it is not bad, it is just that when watching the first three movies I looked down when it was over and saw my popcorn untouched in my hand, the movies had sucked me into it's story making me forget everything else from the first scene until the credits rolled, this movie is merely ok. It is a ok fantasy movie but it is sub par to the rest of the series and it also feels very tacked on.I recommend this movie to fantasy, swashbuckling and action fans, but if you expect it to be of the same caliber as the original Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, then prepare to be disappointed. If you just want two hours of entertainment of the fantastical sort then this movie will provide that and do so fairly well.

I have to say, this movie was amazingly the best Pirates movie in thisfranchise. I just came back from it and I was literally biting on mystraw towards the end. The acting was good and the plot continued fromwhere the 3rd movie had left off. I wasn't anxiously wanting to seethis movie, but I did want to see it and I'm glad that I did. It seemsto me that Jack Sparrow got smarter in the beginning. It began with him finding out that someone was impersonating him. Inthe bar scene, he finally found out who it was. It was his old loveAngelica (Cruz). The last few lines at the end of last conversationbetween Jack and Angelica was something that I wasn't expecting to hearThis movie had a lot of action in it. The final battle scene wasthrilling. In my opinion, this movie did just fine without Orlando Bloom and KeiraKnightly. However, Johnny Depp is my favorite actor, so this movie willbe horrible without him and Geoffrey Rush. Those two are my favoritepirates. So I give it a.... 10/10!!

I didn't like the 2 and 3 sequel to POTC, but I thought this one was alot better. It wasn't as boring, the story made more sense, and itseemed to be a little shorter. I wasn't expecting much since I hatedthe third sequel, but like I said, I thought this one was OK.Jack is in London hearing rumors that an impostor is lining up a crew. The impostor is his ex girl, Angelica, the daughter of black beard. Thenext thing you know, they are on a ship and after the Fountain ofYouth. And so is the Spanish and Barbossa. Blackbeard is played by theperfect villain in Ian Mcshane. He almost always plays the bad guy. There are mermaids thrown in, a religious missionary, funny scenes ofJack using coconut trees to corral the Spanish, and a decent ending.FINAL VERDICT: I loved the first POTC and this is the first sequel Ican recommend. I thought it was decent, not as boring nor as long.

pirates of the Caribbean is my best movie and this last episode is alsoa great part too.so many things changed in this part but quality neverchanged and i can say this part perfect too. so i recommend everyone towatch this movie... Thank goodness the cast is still on their game.Johnny Depp once again breathes life into the pirate movie with hissmart, unpredictable, and hilarious portrayal of Jack Sparrow. Despitewhat the reviews say, Jack Sparrow's shtick isn't getting old as he isstill a delight to watch. Geoffrey Rush once again shines as Jack'sbest rival Barbossa, as his quiet intentions resemble that of Sparrowin earlier films. Penelope Cruz adds a layer of sexuality that wedefinitely did not have with the other Pirates of the Caribbeans--it'sjust a shame she didn't have much time with Sparrow. Director RobMarshall was able to shell out good performances from everyone in thecast, but he definitely wasn't the man for this job. Pirates of theCaribbean: On Stranger Tides is a mix of frustration and fun. There wasplenty of potential that wasn't met because of questionable plot lines, pointless moments, lack of chemistry (once again: writer's fault. Goodgoing Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio), and uneven direction. All thatbanter aside, Pirates is also plenty fun with several delightfulmoments, funny lines, and much more action than the last Pirates flick.Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz and company keep the movie afloat, andprevent it from being a pure bore. But I think the franchise worksbetter when Verbinski is behind the camera. On Stranger Tides is decentsummer entertainment, but doesn't have the inescapable magic and charmof the first two.

Pirates of the Caribbean debuted atop a cresting wave, but after a hattrick of subpar sequels, this rickety franchise is all but shipwrecked. The fourth installment, On Stranger Tides, cements a downward spiral ofdiminishing creativity with Captain Jack Sparrow's most shallowadventure yet. Gone is director Gore Verbinski, whose surrealistsensibilities were the saving grace of Dead Man's Chest and At World'sEnd. His leftfield replacement is Rob Marshall, the man behind theAcademy Award-winning musical, Chicago.Action is obviously not Marshall's forte, but it doesn't seemunreasonable to have expected better choreography. Marred by shapelesslarge-scale skirmishes, On Stranger Tides lacks the series' signaturespunk. To that effect, personality walked the plank prior to theopening titles.Granted, the characters of the Pirates universe have always beenarchetypes enlivened by smart performances, but even the novelty ofJohnny Depp as our ne'er-do-well antihero is wearing itself thin.Likewise, Geoffrey Rush trotting out his Barbossa doesn't deliver thesame impact four times over. Other familiar faces appear throughoutthis overlong narrative, but On Stranger Tides is better defined by itsabsentees and new recruits.Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley are the most obvious examples. Axingtheir dull relationship is no great loss, nor is the omission ofsquid-faced antagonist Davy Jones. Pity their replacements are lessinteresting still. An aloof Penélope Cruz might be the most boringwoman on the seven seas, and her romance with Sparrow is dead in thewater. Don't even get me started on the courtship of the cleric and themermaid, which sounds like the setup to a bad joke. Deadwood's IanMcShane turns in a compelling interpretation of the legendary pirateBlack Beard, but is criminally underused.Weaving a tale that involves three factions pulling anchor to findPonce de Leon's fabled fountain of youth, On Stranger Tides plays outlike the world's most expensive snail race. And the audience ain'tgetting any younger. No epic is as simple as point A to B, but Piratesrevels in getting sidetracked. Silly business like voodoo dolls, mermaid tears, and magic compasses needlessly postpone the endgame;"It's not the destination so much as the journey," Sparrow quips. I'dbe inclined to agree if either were any fun.Of course it wouldn't be a Pirates of the Caribbean movie without CGIsea creatures and mystical trinkets, but both serve merely to inflatethe plot  it's like catching a glimpse of the director backstagegesturing 'stretch, stretch!' Or perhaps it's proof of weakcharacterization that the inanimate objects prove just as interestingas our heroes. With a gray-brown pallet and precious few postcards to remember it by,On Stranger Tides is inconsequential even by popcorn standards. Thefranchise has become increasingly inaccessible, and while this fourthinstallment stands better alone than At World's End, there is littleincentive for viewers not yet familiar with the wily charms of JackSparrow to care. Accordingly, attendance for the Pirates filmscontinues to drop, though the 90 million Marshall raked in over openingweekend is nothing to sneeze at. Word is a fifth installment is alreadyin the works.Realistically, Pirates won't stop until Disney runs it aground or Deppsays no  and like any good captain with a multi-million dollar checkin hand, he's going down with the ship.

Free of his debt to Davy Jones, we join Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) in the process of rescuing a trusted shipmate from the Royal executioners. When that fails, the crown attempts to coerce him into setting sail for the fabled fountain of youth. However, while Jack is in possession of neither ship nor crew, (and the film is without former cast members Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley who elected to pursue other projects) Sparrow's captors are under the impression that he has a ship and is presently amassing a crew. Sparrow investigates and discovers someone impersonating him for their own purposes. A woman, of all things. In fact, a woman from his past by the name of Angelica (played by Penelope Cruz). Clearly the story is complicated and the viewer is asked to make many accommodations where plausibility and time are concerned. That said, it's a well-executed successor to the three previous films, the action is entertaining and the cast is, for the most part, more than adequate. A great time at the movies.

With a new director (Rob Marshall replacing Gore Verbinski), a newvillain (Ian McShane as Blackbeard) and sans two of its lead stars(Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley), the POTC franchise is indeedsailing into Stranger Tides. In fact, after the Verbinski trilogy thatended At World's End, this fourth instalment looks like it could usesome rejuvenation - hence its plot about a quest for the mythicFountain of Youth. However, while the pace is supposed to build up to a climax, "OnStranger Tides" seems to start off fast and frivolous - but graduallyslackens in pace and content right to its ending. When the movie opens, we find Capt Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp)landlubbing in London - and in search of a ship to skipper. However, helearns that someone is impersonating him and is busy recruiting a crewin a race against the Spaniards to look for the fountain of youth. Atone of these recruiting stations, Jack runs into his father (KeithRichards!) and old flame Angelica (Penelope Cruz). After the requisite sword play, drinking, looting and chases, Jackfinds himself on board Blackbeard's ship, Queen Anne's Revenge, withAngelica as first mate! Besides the Spanish, a certain one-leggedcaptain (Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa) is also looking for the saidfountain - on behalf of the king of England. However, before they canreach the fountain, they must face a bevy of mesmerising men-eatingmermaids and procure a tear from one of them, so as to put into effectthe power of everlasting youth.Unlike the previous movies, which had heavily-computerised creatureslike Bill Nighy's Davy Jones, this one is less of a monster show. However, Depp still wears heavy eye shadow and is back in his usualwacky self as Capt Sparrow, having an audience with King George(Richard Griffiths) and even smooching Judi Dench before setting out tosea. Yes, it is ho-ho-ho and a bottle of fun in Merry Ole England andthe pace slackens when the narrative sets sail. Well, at least until weget to the part about the ravenous mermaids, anyway.Cruz takes over from Knightley as female lead but while the senoritacan be as feisty as they come, the romantic angle is undeveloped.Instead she keeps the audience guessing as to whether she is the realdaughter of Blackbeard. The romance factor comes in a subplot about anearnest missionary (Sam Claflin) and a captured mermaid (AstridBerges-Frisbey as Syrena). The swashbuckling department isn't that wellstocked either. The fights look contrived and the movie lacks tension and suspense. Themost 'violent' sequences are those concerning the mermaids - and theydon't seem as menacing as they are enigmatic and fetching (with theirchests well out of view, of course).Among the cast, Rush is the most entertaining as Barbossa; Cruz earnsher keep as the delectable Angelica, but McShane seems to have littleto do except look fierce and frightful and occasionally kill someone. On the whole, it's more like the Pirates on Shallow Tides.(limchangmoh.blogspot.com)
