In brightest day

I honestly didn't know a lot about the Green Lantern before this movie, since he's not nearly as well known as Spiderman, Superman or Batman. And, well, the "Green Lantern" movie isn't really the best way for the public to be introduced to him -- it's thinly-plotted, with a forgettable female lead and a barrage of flashy, splashy CGI. Fighter pilot Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds) is suddenly abducted by a ball of green energy, and deposited next to a dying alien who gives him a ring and a green lantern. Before you can say "it's not easy being green," he's zapped off to an alien planet called Oa, where the Green Lantern Corps is headquartered. What is the Green Lantern Corps? Well, they're an intergalactic force for good, who rely on the green energy of WILLPOWER (just roll with it), and are able to use their rings to fly, fire energy blasts, and make anything they can imagine. And the Corps wastes no time in training Hal in his ring's use, although their leader Sinestro (Mark Strong) doesn't think he's up to the job. However, it turns out that the dead Green Lantern was killed by Parallax, a vast malevolent creature feeding off the yellow energy of fear -- and it's also infected a mousy scientist (Peter Sarsgaard), who goes on a rampage. Now Hal must somehow overcome his own fears, or the entire Earth will be destroyed by Parallax. The Cinema Snob said that this felt like the pilot for a Green Lantern TV show, and I have to agree with him -- it's basically all an origin story for the Green Lantern, and everything else is basically secondary to Hal Jordan becoming a superhero and proving himself. It's not horrible, but it failed to thrill me as an epic superhero movie should. So for most of the running time, Martin Campbell tries to dazzle us with flashy action sequences (a dogfight with AI fighter jets) and vast expanses of glitzy special effects (the glimmering emerald cities of Oa). The plot is pretty thin and straightforward, with no real twists or surprises -- about ten minutes in, you can easily predict everything that will happen after that. Seriously, four writers worked on this? And yes, I found it VERY distracting that Parallax looks like a giant cosmic diarrhea attack. I am not kidding -- he looks like Sauron's poo. Ryan Reynolds is.... passable. He doesn't seem like he's trying very hard during the more dramatic scenes, but he's pretty good when Hal is being goofy ("To infinity and beyond!") or kicking butt. And Mark Strong and Peter Sarsgaard give excellent performances as a suspicious military leader and a big-brained scientist-turned-megalomaniac. But Blake Lively as the token love interest? She's not only completely nondescript and bland, but totally devoid of chemistry with Reynolds. She literally looks like his much younger sister. "Green Lantern" does a decent job introducing us to the world of the Green Lantern Corps, but the plot is so thin and predictable that it really doesn't do the concept justice. Maybe the sequel will do better.

critics are way too harsh

i have to say wow the critics tore this to shreds when it did notdeserve it, as far as i am concerned it was a very much enjoyableorigin movie, it is still leagues above some of the worse movies DC hasdone like superman returns. the actors were chosen well and the scriptand effects were acceptable. however i do have a theory as to why thecritics have been so harsh and to a degree it has to do with the othersummer blockbusters that came out Thor and x-men which were excellent, but Marvel has established itself so well within the movies now theycan get that level of backing for anything...DC just has Nolan's batmanfranchise really. the problem lies also in the fact when promoting themovie it was being compared to being the "next starwars" so to speak sothis lead to a massive skeptical effect and when it wasn't starwars,Thor or x-men the critics ripped it to shreds. it wasn't a great moviebut it deserves better than it was given.

A worthy summer sci-fi

"Help me save my planet! Help me fight it!" Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds)If green is like growth, then Green Lantern suits the simile. The greengrowth is Lantern's franchise possibilities because the concept of ahuman chosen to be one of the universe's guardians can be new enough tobe carried through several iterations. I can see a few summers waitingfor the next installment.A comic-book-based, sci-fi thriller with a titular hero, playedcasually if not blandly but engagingly by Ryan Reynolds, in theSuperman, Spider Man, Iron Man mode, Lantern has the clichés of flawedhero who has worlds to save, demons to tame, and a girl friend tocomplicate his mission. And unnecessarily but not obtrusively in 3-D.Director Martin Campbell, who guided Daniel Craig through a slickCasino Royale, helps Reynolds be manly enough to save the world yetvulnerable enough to care about the humans he guards. The thematic focus on the power of the will to achieve is good for allages at a time when achieving anything great seems out of everyone'sgrasp. The antithesis, fear, is also a powerful motif, for the enemy ofthe Green Lantern Corps is Parallax, an evil force feeding off itsyellow energy. Although the depiction of this evil is pedestrian, thenotion of forces in the universe that oppose good is always useful tothe dramatist. As a worthy summer blockbuster, Green Lantern has the usual CGIspectacle of exotic kingdoms in deep space and immortal leaders likethe gods on Mt. Olympus (why they are shriveled sages just isn'tlogical). All this eyewash is worthy of Hollywood technicality butleaves me longing for more dialogue in other galaxies and less romancehere on earth."Only Thing We Have to Fear Is Fear Itself." Top Gun meets Star Trek

I don't know why people expect greatness from comic book movies. Bynature, comics are generally fun and fantastical and that's the way Ilike the movies. The Green Lantern was right along that plane (ThinkFantastic Four, not Dark Knight). I loved the characters with theirsubtlety and genuine presences. The interactions were very well done. And with so little time to tell so much of a story, I felt that thelittle nuances gave good insight to back story and developed characterwhen there just wasn't time to get too deeply into it. As a whole, thefilm is bursting with fantasy; space travel, mind-bending, energypowered manifestations, and has the ability to poke fun at it'sinherent comic book cheese. The humor is light (you are not getting VanWilder), but that plays well into Hal's personal journey and therelationship he has with Carol. In short, I thoroughly enjoyed it andwill be on the lookout for sequels.

Very Good. It could have been better, but it is a very promising start to a franchise

Very good movie. Now, it had its flaws, but overall I thought it wasvery enjoyable. It was faithful to the comics overall and only deviatedin some aspects. And it seemed to embrace some silliness and thecolorful otherworldly aspects of the source material, which is arefreshing change from all of the dark and overly moody superheroflicks that Marvel (and even DC itself to some extent) has beenchurning out recently. Not to say that this movie isn't serious in someparts. Lets see, where to begin:The Story: (SPOILER ALERT)First, the good. Overall, I think the movie did a very good job ofintroducing the character of Hal Jordan and conveying his origin. Thetwo villains that were a part of this movie: Parallax and HectorHammond were both interesting and presented a lot of action and dramafor Hal in the story. Okay, first is Parallax, who is introduced as themain villain of the film. Now, in this version of the character he ismore so an amalgamation of Krona and Parallax than the actual Parallax, which I wasn't so happy about, but I thought the way they did it wassomewhat interesting. He proved to be a formidable opponent for Hal asa fledgling Green Lantern and the scenes that he was in had me on theedge if my seat, even if he did look somewhat cartoon-like. Second isHector Hammond, which I liked more than Parallax. In the movie, theydid stray from the comics a little in terms of his origin, but only inthe fact that they made it so that his powers originated from beingexposed to Parallax and not from being exposed to meteorite (as in thecomics). I loved him. He was just so calculating and maniacal and notin a way that was cliché, but seemed fresh and original. And PeterSarsgaard was just so good in the role, he was just so good at beingcreepy, it seemed like he was made to play Hector Hammond. It did takea little while for the story to get off the ground because they had togive the back-story of the character and they sort of jumped from sceneto scene quickly to set up decades of Green Lantern mythology, but onceit did, it progressed really smoothly and proved to be an example ofdynamic storytelling. Now, the bad. So there were some things that Ifound flawed in the story line. First was the romance between Hal andCarol, which seemed just overly-angst-ridden and cliché. And basicallyit was the same scene replaying itself until the ending. On the brightside, Blake Lively was better in the role of Carol than I would havethought and actually did a decent job of portraying a seriousbusinesswoman. Second, in some parts, it was very campy and that sortof took me out of the serious tone that I was getting into. However, that could be taken as a good thing and it did provide someself-deprecating humor that gave the audience a good laugh. The Effects:OK on this part, believe me, ignore what the critics are saying. Theeffects were AMAZING, a bit cartoon-like in some parts, but that's kindof what I expected. The effects were just so well done and gave themovie and action scenes, which were fantastic, such strength. I evenfound the scene with the imagined race-car track to be very cool. The Acting:Okay, so overall this was a strong cast. Reynolds, Strong, andSarsgaard were all exceptional in their roles. But, there were someweak links, Lively being one of them. She was decent in the role, butshe still came off as somewhat needy and shallow and the charactersuffered because of it.Since I already went over Sarsgaard, I'm just going to skip to theother two. Reynolds was very good in his role. He added some groundinghumor, which counteracted some of the otherworldly sci-fi fantasy andsurprisingly he was impressive in portraying a character with fears ofinadequacy who rises to the occasion to become the hero, which was kindof corny, but I have to say that the inner comic-book reader in meliked it.Last, but definitely not least, Mark Strong was absolutely amazing asSinestro. He portrayed all of the traits that make the character ofSinestro so cool; the pride, condescension, and lust for power. It wasall there in his performance. And that end scene with him....can anyonesay sequel. Conclusion:So overall: The movie was no Iron Man or the Dark Knight, but it wasstill very enjoyable in its own respect. I thought the action sceneswere very compelling and done extremely well. It was only some problemswith the story and the need to set up the lengthy history that draggedit down from being on par with Iron Man or TDK. When you go in there, don't expect a traditional superhero story, where this guy with hisunique abilities or his self-made skills chooses to use saidabilities/skills to take down the bad guy. Think of it as an averageman who has been chosen for something and has it thrust upon him. And Iknow that that may sound a bit cliché, but when you think about it, wehaven't really had one of those stories come to us on the big screen ina while. As for what to expect in terms of fantasy and storyline, thinkSuperman (1978) mixed with dashes of Iron Man and Thor. It is worthseeing and definitely worth a sequel, if only to strengthen some of theweaknesses that this one had. I'm giving it an 8.5 out of 10, notperfect, but a very promising start. If you're a fan of Green Lantern, you'll love it once it gets through the explanatory phase.

Bad, but not too bad

The best thing I can say about this movie is that it's not as bad as Iexpected it to be from the reviews I read. It's primary fault issimilar to the equally bad Fantastic Four movies--it doesn't take itssource material seriously at all. I realize it's a cheesy comic bookmovie and comic book superhero movies really blow when taken TOOseriously (see Ang Lee's horrible Hulk movie), but the filmmakersshould at least care enough to treat Hal like a real character, ratherthan just a cartoon character. They completely RUINED Parallax when you compare the character to JeffJahns original books (which are great, by the way). People havedescribed him as "The giant poop monster", and I tend to agree. Hulk,Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer and now this movie have allcommitted an unforgivable sin: Having a main villain that's just anamorphous blob of special effects. Blah.Considering how much they spent on this movie, the CGI looks prettybad. Where did that $200 million go? Also, directors need to learn fromthe errors of George Lucas and the awful Star Wars prequels: Coach youractors well if you're going to have them do scene after scene in mo-capsuits in front of a green screen. Otherwise, they're going to lookawkward and stiff. The editing is bad. A lot of the times the film just cuts to Halshowing up somewhere without explaining how the hell he got there oreven knew to be there. This happens multiple times and really annoyedme when I was watching it.Also, this is a nitpick, but the early scene with the jet fighters isloaded with factual errors. For one thing, the F-35 is a strikefighter, not an air superiority fighter. If they were testing the newdrones' air superiority capabilities, they should have used the F-22,which is the most advanced air superiority fighter in the world. Also,Hal beats the drones by flying to 50,000 feet, which (somehow) causeshis and their engines to flame out. This is stupid. For one thing, theF-35's service ceiling is 60,000 feet. But besides this, serviceceiling doesn't mean your whole plane frazzes out. It just means it'sability to climb diminishes after this point. You won't harm a plane byhitting the service ceiling. Also, the whole dog fight scene isinaccurate because the F-35 can target other planes without beingdirectly behind them. But there are some good things about the movie. I really like Sinestro, and some of the scenes on Oa are very impressive. Also, there's somegood humor in certain parts of the movie. Ryan Reynolds does the besthe can with a bad script, but he's not particularly likable in it.Parts of it were enjoyable, and I don't regret seeing it. It might beworth renting and watching with some friends and some beer so you cangive it the Mystery Science Theater treatment.

Basically Convoluted and Derivative

If there were no comic book-based films like "Superman", "Spider-Man","Iron Man" and" X-Men", this cinema rendition of "Green Lantern" wouldeasily have wowed audiences. Alas, having so many superhero fantasiesthat have been so well fleshed out on the screen before, this one lookssloppily-done and derivative. And with its convoluted backgroundmythology that the film-makers seem to be throwing at us instead ofallowing us to 'experience' it, we are left feeling detached about thewhole Green Lantern stuff. And maybe feeling a little deja vu...Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds) is a cocky test pilot who's still haunted bythe death of his father in an aircraft accident. After his latest stuntgets him grounded, Hal finds himself enveloped by a strange green lightwhich takes him to a wrecked spaceship where a dying alien (TemueraMorrison as Abin Sur) passes him a ring and tells him that he has been'chosen' to join an inter-planetary peace-keeping force known as theGreen Lantern Corps. The ring enables him to create anything his mindcan imagine.Meanwhile, an evil entity known as Parallax is planning to destroy theEarth and when scientist Hector Hammond (Peter Sarsgaard) becomesinfected with Parallax's powers, he goes after Hal's partner, testpilot Carol Ferris (Blake Lively). Thus Hal is burdened with the tasksof saving the universe, the world - and his girlfriend.Although Reynolds (who was picked for the role over Sam Worthington adChris Pine) provides the requisite brash personality and glib jokes asHal Jordan, he can't shake off his own Ryan Reynolds-ness to be theconflicted superhero, Green Lantern. Thus the sequences of his GreenLantern at the 'summit conference' at Oa with Sinestro (Mark Strong)look badly contrived and phony. For me, the best parts of the movie arewhen Hal/Green Lantern interacts with Lively's Carol. At the mediascreening I attended, the loudest laugh was when Carol recognises Halin his silly green mask. Indeed, Lively provides more than justeye-candy as Hal's sexy girlfriend and daughter of his 'boss' (Jay O.Sanders), she is the center of attraction whenever she appears.Sarsgaard can be compelling as the accidental and tragic villain - andhe even manages to convey his feelings through his Elephant Manmake-up. Tim Robbins has a cameo as Senator Hammond, Hector'sdomineering father, while Angela Bassett plays a (forgettable) doctor. As far as action set pieces go, there are a few mayhem sequences - butnone to beat those of "Fast Five" and "Transformers". The 3D effectsare just serviceable, not spectacular. Basically, "Green Lantern" isjust another summer cinema fodder. (limchangmoh.blogspot.com)

Green Latern had the elements there, but missed with the script

While I enjoyed the Green Lantern, there were definitely areas thatwere lacking. I think the script was okay, but could have been farbetter. It was the ad-libs that help save it.Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan was endearing, likable and yet strong andfocused. I found him believable in the character role. He was smart, funny, charming, powerful, courageous and fearless.Mark Strong as Sinestro was clearly the strongest actor in character. He was excellent in the role. He played a power-hungry, cold and steelycharacter well.Blake Lively was the weak link in the story, and possibly because ofthe way it was written and possibly because of the way she interpretedher character. She was dull, boring and even her attempt to be a vampfailed. I felt her character could have been completely cut from thestory and it could have been strengthened. It would have allowed anearlier entrance of the evil enemy and more interactions with Hal andSinestro, which was the best part of the film. Was this the best super-hero film of the summer? No, but I don't blamethe acting (other than Blake's which I thought was dull and boring). Itwas ill-paced, and a poor script that hurt this film.Did I find the film still worth a ticket to the theater? Yes. It stillentertained, which is ultimately the real purpose of a film.

Green Lantern (2011)

A film I can both hate and love in equal measure. Superhero movies havealways been compelling to me, even if I am not acquainted with thecharacter. Green Lantern is the character I am most dedicated to. Isimply adore the comics, the world, the characters, and the storylines. This is where the film faces a major problem. The inclusion ofaliens, and a mythology centered around glowing rings, may be a bit toocorny for newcomers, and a retread of the origin story is a bitrepetitive for adoring fans. The film certainly tries to cram everything in. A little too much, asit tries to focus on Hal's training, his doubts, his fears, his loves, his losses, etc. All these elements are simply incorporated into thescenes they are relevant to, rather than hanging over the character andadding to his dimensions. Sarsgaard is a great earthbound villain. He'sgrotesque and quirky, and also faces some daddy issues of his own. He'sthe perfect parallel to Hal Jordan. As the film focuses on Hal and his romance, we are given little interms of the Green Lantern Corps. This is a shame, as they are the mostintriguing parts. The editing on OA, however, is very sloppy. It seemslike a Green Lantern trains for 5 minutes. The vast planet is reducedto a few platforms on which to fight. The other Lanterns also get aspace battle which cuts out before it's finished, and we get a quicksummary from Sinestro. From a huge fan, there is a lot of disappointment. BUT, it is alsofantastically enjoyable. It's pure summer fun, and many comic bookmovies forget to be exactly that. The acting is spot on, and all theright ingredients are here, even if not in the correct amounts orfrequency. I was amazed by the effects, and the humor was probably thebest way to handle some of the more out-there aspects of the mythology. On par with Spider-Man 3 and Iron Man 2. Enjoyable, silly, fun, withhopefully a lot more to give in the future.

I fell asleep.

I saw two horrible movies this weekend, one being Green Lantern and theother being Super 8 (I'll be reviewing that next). I was trying todecide which movie to see after work btwn this and X-Men. I checked outthe time length and that really should have been a clue. How much of anorigin story can be told in 90 minutes? As a disclosure, I have neverread a GL comic, but I am a huge fan of the superhero movies. I wasfully prepared to like it so much that I would buy an anthology ofcomics. The patheticness of this movie makes me want to check out thecomics to see what the real story is about, but forget about everadding this movie to my collection.I had a few problems with this movie. As much as I love Reynolds as anactor, I did not see him as this character. I felt like I was watchingRyan. Keeping it in genre, RDJ IS Iron Man, HJ IS Wolverine, CB ISBatman, Christopher Reeves (RIP) IS Superman. It's as though I wasalways conscious of him. As for Blake Lively, I am a casual viewer ofGossip Girl, so I know who she is. But in this movie, she felt like agimmick. As though the producers said, "which hot young starlet shouldbe in this movie?" Again to compare w/in genre, in both the Hulk and inIron Man, neither Liv Tyler nor Gwenyth Paltrow can be classified asthe next IT girl (they've had that moment), but they WORKED. They hadchemistry with the hero that was very organic. I felt that Ryan andBlake had no chemistry. Some people, IMO, just don't fit this genre(cough cough Katie Holmes cough cough). Their kiss at the end made mecringe. In the beginning, when she was in pilot mode, I was surprisedand thinking "oh OK, so she's gonna be different from all the otherdistressed damsels" (again, I've never read the comics). So I wasdisappointed when she ended up in the super tight dresses and heels. Iam not a feminist at all, but just found it to be a cliché when Ithought the movie had other plans. I mentioned in my title that I dozed off. Well, the last scene I recallwas Peter Saarsgard in pain in his bed, and then I woke up and GreenLantern had formed some race track or something. I have NO clue what Imissed and only just now figured it out based on the plot summary. Lots of wasted familiar faces here: Tim Robbins, Angela Bassett (totalsurprise) and Mark Strong. The battle scene with Parallax was over soquick. And I'm no scientist, but how did Hal get so close to the sunw/o getting singed?I could keep typing, but other posters have given some other goodcriticism. I fully expect this movie to be shunned in a way similar tothe Eric Bana version of the 'Hulk." Although this movie does seem tobe given a bit more credit than that one, it will always beovershadowed by the incredible superhero flicks we've had since about2005. I never listen to critics when deciding which movies to see. I preferthe opinions of either friends/family or regular IMDb posters. I reallywish I had looked at these reviews first.

Does the Lantern outshine the other hero movies.

Does Green Lantern's Light shine above the rest? The summer of 2011 seems to be the season for comic book super heromovies. Already this summer we have seen: Thor and X-men: First Classenter the movie theaters and each has provided its own spin and superhero experience. This weekend, Marvel's super heroes take a break whileD.C. sends in one of their own ringers to take the reign ofentertaining the audience. The Green Lantern, starring Ryan Reynolds, centers on the daredevil pilot Hal Jordan (Reynolds) who isirresponsible, immature, and a daredevil willing to break the rules. After a few minutes of Top Gun like flying scenes, arguing with hischild hood friend Carol Ferris (Blake Lively), and some quality timewith a young nephew Hal Jordan is transported to the dying Abin Sur, apurple pink alien who is evidently the strongest warrior of the LanternCore. Here Hal receives the mystic Green ring and begins his journey ofbecoming a galactic guardian. I have to admit these first scenes were funny, exciting, and set up thebackground of Hal Jordan pretty well, and kicked the movie off to agood start. However, it wasn't long before weaknesses of the moviebegin to show. After arriving at Oa, the planet of the guardians, weget to meet some of the other Lantern core members. A variety ofspecies of aliens, which look like souped up versions of the aliensfrom Star Wars, make up the galactic guardian force. Unfortunately mostof these soldiers do absolutely nothing in the movie, which makes thelantern core seem useless, weak, and perhaps stuck up depending on howyou view the movie. The exceptions to the rule are Kilowag, Tomar-Re,and Sinestro who actually show off the green ring skills in someexciting, albeit short action scenes. Eventually trouble in the form of Hector Hammond (Peter Sarsgaard)arises, but many may not find this villain very threatening orsinister. Instead Hammond's character is more of a bulb headed, yelloweyed, revenge seeking nerd who seems to have to go to the bathroomthroughout most of his screen time. My friends laughed at this villainmore than cringed finding his howling moans annoying and histelekinetic abilities weak. I think the directors of this movie focusedmore on Parallax, who has been completely made over from the comics, who still didn't have the most centered role in the film. The menacingcloud floated more than anything, but the CGI work combined with thesinister voice still makes him incredibly sinister looking andthreatening. So what else to say about this movie? Well for one thing women willlove Ryan Reynolds in this movie. That classic, charming, and fastmouthed comedy prevails in this movie and women who love the movie "TheProposal" will fall in love again with him. A few of the audiencemembers were also wooing and drooling over his physique, which is shownoff both in and out of the uniform. Guys however also get an eye treatas Ms. Blake Lively shows off her beauty to the camera. Her character, other than being beautiful, has a combination of traits that make her adynamic character to the film instead of a typical damsel in distress, which adds to the movie. The man that they picked to play Sinestro wasalso well done as the actor, Mark Strong, captured that pompous, arrogant, and serious nature that defines the Sinestro character. The other thing that I must complement on is how well the CGI work wasfor this movie. It's not easy for one to make the powers of the GreenLantern shine, but this movie did a good job at portraying theabilities of green energy without being too flashy. The forging ofweapons, the power beam shots, the generation of fists and vehicleswere sharp, crisp, and not eye blinding, which was a positive for me. Ido however wish there was more action and scenarios that required theuse of the ring, even if it wasn't Hal Jordan using the powers. I stillthink the biggest disappointment to this movie was the fact that theother Lanterns really did nothing and showed off no advanced techniquesthat we've seen in comics past. Overall Green Lantern was a decent movie that was fun, entertaining, and visually impressive. Although rushed and crammed with informationthat took years to establish in the comics, I still think that GreenLantern had a lot of positives that will make most audience membersapplaud and laugh. The eye candy that Reynolds and Lively provide isprobably the biggest selling point of this movie, and I must warn thatfans of the comic series may be upset with the direction the movietook. I hope that if they do a next movie, as hinted about halfwaythrough the credits, the CGI work stays the same, but there is a lotmore involvement by the other Lanterns. Overall I give this movie a 7.0or 7.5. Recommended audience: Ryan Reynold and Blake Lively fans andthose who like comic book movies Audience to avoid this movie: Big fansof the comic book, fans looking for lots of action, and anyone who getsannoyed of the stars of this movie. Check back tomorrow for my take onThe Art of Getting By.

This Lantern is Very Dim

I don't expect superhero movies to be Oscar worthy, but I do expectthem to be interesting enough to keep me awake until the end. Putplainly, Green Lantern is boring.I'm a big fan of action movies, especially comic book movies. I wasn'texpecting the next Spiderman or XMen, but this wasn't even on par withGhostrider or Punisher: Warzone. This movie made Superman Returns looklike The Godfather. Why? Other than being boring......There were too many "suspend your disbelief" moments. When Hal first1st encounters the space alien Abin Sur washed up on the beach, itmight as well have been a human being laying there...His reaction issimply "Hold on there buddy". Ssme when he brings his friend back withhim, the friend simply says "Oh wow, a spaceship huh? And that's analien...Gee whiz..." And how is it that Abin Sur crashlanded just acouple of miles away from where Hal Jordan was at? The ring hadn't yet"chosen" Hal, so is it just a big coincidence that Hal was right downthe street? Or was the ring feeling lazy? "Yeah, this guy will do..."One more question: why did Abin-Sur need a spaceship? Can't he flythrough space with his ring? ...The female lead Blake Lively wasnothing but eye candy for 13 year old adolescents. In every singlescene she was "dolled up" to the level of ridiculousness. Even herflight suit was "sexy". In one scene she was wearing a tight fittingdress in full makeup, even though she was sitting at home on her laptopat what appeared to be daybreak. I was just hoping for a scene of herwearing sweatpants, something to make her feel less like a prop andmore like a real person. I didn't mind her acting so much, I was justsort of indifferent to the character....The "action" in this film...Wow...How did they screw it up this bad?Example: the big showdown between the Lanterns and Paralax, it lastedall of about 20 seconds. They all shot out some big green net thing, which Paralax quickly and easily broke out of, and then proceeded tokill all but Sinestro in about 4 seconds. It was just lame. We'resupposed to believe that the GL corp are these awesome badasses, andall they do is toss a net and then die? Later there is a scene whereHal goes to a hangar to battle Hector Hammond...how the hell did heknow where to go? There was no lead in to that scene whatsoever.Speaking of which, WHY would Paralax follow Hal away from earth? Itcame to earth to destroy it and feast on fear, which it was doing afine job of, Hal shows up and flys away, and it just follows himdirectly into the sun's gravity... Huh? ...The projections, as statedby many others here, are also lame. The Hot Wheels track was just sodumb, I rolled my eyes and shook my head in disbelief. That whole scenewas just embarrassing to watch. i actually felt bad for the filmmakers. It was as bad as the Emo Peter Parker sidewalk dance scene...I could go on and on and on. It was a struggle not to leave the theatreon this one. that is something I have done only 2 times in all of my 35years. The main problem is that the film drags on and on and on andon....

Very enjoyable superhero movie! Beware: NO Digital Copy!!

As someone who read comics when he was little, I am really enjoying the dirth of superhero movies. Green Lantern was a fun superhero movie and I loved it. For anyone who knows anything about the Green Lantern, this was a very ambitious undertaking from a special effects point of view. The story is all about aliens, new worlds and a seemingly magical ring that can do almost anything. Those green energy constructs that are made from the ring appeared in the comics and can come across as silly to someone who may not know that this is what a Green Lantern does. Sorry critics if you need a make-believe story about a radioactive spider to allow you to suspend disbelief. Why not relax and enjoy the show? It is often funny to see the difference between the jaded critics' reviews and the public perception; Moviefone's ranking (public vs. critics) is abou 99% to 40%. That's about right. Is the story air-tight? Of course not, it's about a superhero. But then again, neither are stories about vampires, aliens or dinosaurs brought back to life. It's all make believe. But then again, this is a DC Comics story as opposed to a Marvel comics story. The two publishers are different in that Marvel spends more time focusing on the humanity and imperfections of their heroes, whereas DC focuses more on just being the hero. The stories are more simple, but they have their place, too. They are also both very enjoyable...if you just sit back and enjoy.HOWEVER....the "digital copy" allegedly included is not really a digital copy. It is a code to access it on line. While you can get it with your ipad, iphone, computer, etc...you cannot upload it. So, if you are without access to wifi, forget it. How is that a digital copy? They lose 2 stars for that.

Twenty Years Too Late For Great

Based upon word of mouth, Green Lantern was a pass for me when it hit theaters. Despite the excitement I felt during the film's development, it gets a bargain bin rating now that I've finally seen it. Not a terrible film, but not something to pick up at full price either. It might be a fair value when it drops to ten bucks and under. Apart from contemporary effects, this is the Green Lantern movie that we could have expected in the late eighties or early nineties alongside the Keaton Batman films and the John Wesley Shipp Flash TV series. Reynold's Green Lantern would have been right at home in those superhero worlds, not least of all for the scream-queening of Peter Sarsgaard as Hector Hammond and the goofy nature of some of Hal Jordan's ring constructs. The film has more than a few flaws, but for me the greatest disappointment was the lack of integration between the events on Earth and those in space. This should have been a story of awe and wonder on an incredible scale, yet each time my imagination began to soar I found it yanked back down to a clumsy, two-dimensional Earth. There were also some playback issues--even following an update--with this Blu-Ray disc that I haven't been able to troubleshoot yet. Having watched the extended edition only and found it wanting, I'm left wondering if I wouldn't have been happier buying the bare bones DVD edition and saving the cash and the trouble.

The Main Problem with This Film is the Star

The initial casting news already gave me a feeling of foreboding.Thetrailers had warned me as much. Being a fan of the Green Lanterncharacter, I still wanted to give this movie a chance to prove mewrong. However much I wanted to like this movie though, there is onebig problem. It is the star of this film. Ryan Reynolds is simply wrongas Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern. There is nothing wrong with Reynolds' body, as he is built perfectlyfor this superhero role. However, his face has that constant comicsmirk and expression that simply does not jive with being Hal Jordan, and especially as Green Lantern. It does not look right to see Reynoldsreceive the ring from Abin Sur, or to hear him utter the immortal GreenLantern creed. I felt this was a miscasting of the highest order.Nothing they did in the whole movie, including the writers and thedirector Martin Campbell, felt right because of this gravely wrongdecision in casting. It is certainly ironic that the rest of the casting decisions wereactually quite astute. I even felt that Mark Strong was not givenenough to do as Sinestro that was commensurate with his intense starpresence. Blake Lively was beautiful and fit her role of Carol Ferrislike a glove. Geoffrey Rush and Michael Clark Duncan voiced Hal's GLmentors, Tomar-Re and Kilowog respectively, very well. Peter Sarsgaardwas unrecognizable as creepy and nerdy Hector Hammond.I think the chances for the success of this franchise are doomed fromthe start. It already needs a reboot as early as now.

too long on developing character

The movie wasn't terrible. It wasn't great. It was a nice way to blow40 bucks to spend time with the family. Well, when I put it that way, Ifeel I lost out 30 bucks. I should have waited for the DVD. I mean, itwasn't bad. It just wasn't great. Hal Jordan, Green Lantern, has lotsof issues in his Hal Jordan life. He has a doting nephew (that we seejust once...), a family still recovering from a tragedy in the 1990's(which gives the film an excuse to introduce us to his brothers, butum, just once). Peter Sarsgaard, brother-in-law to Jake Gylenhall, waspretty good. He was worth the 10 bucks. In the end, though, it was 90%character development, and by the time they got to the fight scenes(which obviously didn't take that long). If they had focused on hisring and use of his willpower, it would have been better. Instead, weget to psychoanalyze Hal Jordan for most of the movie. So...it wasokay. Nothing great.

Better than average flick, though with real flaws

This review is for the "extended edition" BD/DVD combo set (I say this because Amazon tends to clump different versions together).I missed the flick at the theater... going to theaters has become an ordeal anyway, so now that I have a great home theater system, it's almost a waste of time to go to a normal theater. Unless something's showing at the Alamo Drafthouse (a local restaurant/bar/theater where you can order food and drinks during the show, and which is not open to the under-twenty-one crowd in general!), I never go to the theater at all anymore.I'm a long-time Green Lantern fan... I grew up loving the character, and still do, though I stopped buying the books some time back. Which is fine since DC is once again "Rebooting" their universe, apparently... and most of what I used to know is now "invalidated" anyway... sigh.)So, I purchased this yesterday and watched it last night. I did not watch the theatrical version but instead only watched the extended version (both can be viewed from the BD).The one big flaw in this film is that, like with so many other films of this type, they tried to shoehorn waaay too much into way too small of a movie. As others have said, this is really at least three movies worth of material... the recruitment of Hal Jordan, the story of Hector Hammond, and the "Parallax" thing. And they tried to connect these things which really should be unconnected, leading to a "contrived" feel at times.I was not a total fan of some of the casting. I'm not a huge fan of Ryan Reynolds in general.. no matter what, he'll always be "Van Wilder" to me, I guess, and I've never seen him come across much differently. But they could have done a lot worse, too. And really, Tim Robbins? He was a TOTAL waste of pay in this movie... they'd have been better off getting a no-name player. They clearly paid a lot for him, and he brought next to nothing to the film. I sure hope he didn't get paid more than Peter Sarsgard was paid, or that Mark Strong was paid... because each of them deserved at least twice what Robbins deserved to be paid.I didn't care for the "glitzy" costume or the "artsy" design for the ring and lantern (though the GENERAL shape of the ring was nice). This was a case where "less would be more" as far as I'm concerned. Too many movies do this... getting too wrapped up in the "artsy" stuff and in the process losing track of the important part... the storytelling. And the one real flaw of this flick was with the storytelling, which was just "overcompressed." I LIKED the movie, though the redefinitions bothered me quite a bit.The good? Reynolds did OK, and the character was (mostly) written well... you get more of that with the extended edition, I believe, by the way. Blake Lively is great as Carol Ferris, and Sarsgard is great as Hammond (although the character is WASTED in this film, I'm afraid). The GL Corps is nicely done, all around, though I (personally) would have preferred an entire first flick focused on the Corps and Hal's integration into the corps.I disliked how Parallax was redefined, but overall, I thought it was an acceptable "generic deux ex machina" monster... along the lines of Grendel, really. But this character had pretty much nothing in common with the Parallax who, in the books, possessed Hal Jordan and caused him to go insane and (temporarily) become the most powerful (if well-intentioned) villain in the universe. I would have been much happier if they hadn't used this name, and if they hadn't used the name Krona for the guardian who became Parallax (since this wasn't what happened in the books, and Krona was a totally different villain as well).Ultimately, this is a nice, solid "B" movie. My criticisms are mainly due to how badly I wanted it to be an "A+" movie. But there have been very few "A+" movies (so far, only Batman Begins meets that criteria for me, personally). This was better than any of the Superman flicks so far (and many grades above the last Superman flick). It's a FUN movie, but it's not, in the end, an impactful movie. So, pop some popcorn, sit back and enjoy the movie for what it is. It's a fun movie with great effects which is a passable parallel to the comics character's world in a few ways. And make your own judgements, don't pay attention to the overly hostile reviews. It's not a bad flick, just not as good as it COULD have been.

If You can Read this Review w/o Laughing, then Green Lantern maybe for You!

Wondering why the film is not just getting NEGATIVE reviews, butactually getting TRASHED by critics? Here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1133985/board/thread/184439327Answer: The script is just trash. That link above is the actual plot and script of the movie beingre-told using the Orange Power of Common Sense. This poor plotting of the script clearly shows you why the critics havegiven this film all the negative reviews it deserves with all of thecontradictions, incoherent plots, and plot holes, this movie is filledwith.Just read the actual plot script yourself. There's even the actualGreen Lantern wiki movie plot to follow along with. And if you stilldon't find that whole plot really silly, then Green Lantern may just bethat silly movie to give Warner Bros your $$$ money! Example: Actual Green Lantern plot re-told by the Power of CommonSense!Scene 1 - Ferris Air Base (Control Center)Blake Lively's Dad: "As head of Ferris Air, I want to sell mysuper-awesome drones to the military. So I'm going have Hal Jordan andmy daughter Blake Lively, my own two test pilots, fight them andpresumably lose."Military Guy: "Huh? Why would you do that? Why would we be okay withthat? You could have just told your pilots to lose on purpose so we buyyour drones. If you were even slightly intelligent, you would havedefinitely done that instead."Blake Lively's Dad: "Don't worry, gentlemen. Hal Jordan is such ana--hole, he will be unable to resist trying to win. I promise."***********************************Scene 2 - Ferris Air Base (Blake Lively's Dad's Office); after Hal andBlake return from air drone trainingBlake Lively's Dad: "Well, Hal, you used my daughter as a decoy andthen cheated to defeat the drones."Blake Lively: "Specifically, you used me as a decoy, but didn'tactually use that to your benefit, meaning you had me shot down for noreason whatsoever."Blake Lively's Dad: "Now the military is going to refuse the contract, and I'm going to have to fire countless employees. Good men are goingto lose their livelihoods because of you."Blake Lively: "And although you're supposedly such an awesome pilot, you had a total freakout for no reason whatsoever and ended updestroying your incredibly expensive plane, too."Hal Jordan: "(shrugs) Oh well. Whatcha gonna do?"Blake Lively's Dad: "Christ, what an a--hole."***********************************Scene 3 - Coast; Abin Sur's spacecraft crashedAbin Sur: Hal Jordan. The ring has chosen you because you are fearless.(1 minute earlier - inside an energy ball) Hal Jordan: I'm afraid ofbeing in this crazy green energy ball!(10 minutes earlier - during air training) Hal Jordan: I'm afraid ofdying in a test plane like my dad!(15 minutes after getting the ring - in a bar with Blake) Hal Jordan:I'm afraid of intimacy!(25 minutes later - in Oa) Hal Jordan: I'm afraid of being a GreenLantern!(30 minutes later - in Hal's apartment) Hal Jordan: I'm afraid I suckas a Green Lantern! ***********************************Read more scenes:http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1133985/board/thread/184439327

Just Plain Bad

Okay I know everyone is up in arms about the "digital copy" of this movie, but that is not what I am going to talk about, I am going to review just the movie itself.First of all, "Green Lantern: First Flight" was better. Sure it was animated, but in that one you didn't have Hal Jordan whining about his dead father and how he feels like he can't handle being a Green Lantern. In this movie Hal Jordan, the one person on Earth who is supposed to be confident, fearless, and in control, is NONE of those things. He's an adult who whines like an emo 14 yr old. "Oh my dad's dead, wah! Oh my girlfriend won't go out with me anymore, wah! Oh, I lost my job, wah! Oh, I was in a life and death situation yesterday and I got scared, wah!" The whole time I was shifting in my seat, checking my phone, reading the newspaper, etc. I didn't care! Look, I read comic books. I'll admit that right now. And not EVERY character needs to be dark and brooding with daddy issues. Seriously, we did that crap in the 90's with every single character, it only worked for like 3 characters, the rest were just crap. It didn't work then, and it sure as hell doesn't work now. I didn't buy this movie to watch some whiny emo brooding 20-something complaining about his life. I bought this movie cuz I wanted to see Ryan Reynolds get a ring that lets him fly through space, shoot energy blasts, make energy constructs, talk to aliens, travel to other planets and fight Parallax.Honestly, if you're just interested in the things I just mentioned, fast forward past everything until you see Hal running up to Abin Suir's crashed space ship. Say what you will about "First Flight," but in that movie it only took 2 minutes to do what it took the live action movie 20 minutes to do! Establish Hal getting the ring and friggin' using it!When they FINALLY get to Oa, we get some action at last! The portrayal of Sinestro was PERFECT! Seriously, it could not have been done better in any way shape or form. But Kilowog. Oh god what happened? At the end of the movie Kilowog says "Can I train 'em or can I train 'em?" Ummm, 'Wog, you didn't train Hal at all, you just kicked his ass for like 2 minutes and insulted him the whole time about how he wasn't ready to be a lantern and then you left. Sure at the end he uses the whole, "The bigger you are the faster you burn" thing, which is an off handed comment that Kilowog made during their "training session."Trying to take credit for that is like if you were watching a boxing match and halfway through the fight you shouted out, "Hit him really hard!" And the boxer won the fight. Then you turned to you buddy and said, "Yeah, I told him to do that." Kilowog LOOKED awesome, the voice was good, and he had ONE good line. "Welcome to ring-slingin' 101, or as I like to call it the worst day of your miserable life." That was the only good part of Kilowog's entire appearance in this movie.Later Hal is moping around his apartment crying about how he can't be a Green Lantern and that he doesn't want to be a Green Lantern, and that it's too much responsibility for him. Oh god, I hear enough of this crap in my everyday life, I didn't pay $24.95 to hear this crap. Get to the friggin' action! And then in the VERY NEXT SCENE suddenly he grows a pair and races off to Oa to say, "We MUST stop Paralax and if you don't help me, I'll do it myself!" Ummm, did we miss something? How did he go from being the whiny emo punk with daddy issues to being John McClane with a power ring in like 15 seconds? Seriously, I feel like there's like 2 or 3 scenes missing between those 2 scenes. I won't go into how lame the climax between Hal and Paralax is, but let's just say it's a BIG disappointment. I know this movie was garbage and was just setting up for the sequel, but I hope that the next one will be better and they'll get it right next time. But do NOT pay full price for this. If anything go rent this from the Redbox or have a friend burn you a copy. FAIL!!!
