I was kind of interested in seeing Mr Popper's Penguins despite itssomewhat lukewarm reception. I found it wasn't a bad film, there aresome charming and funny moments with a good cast, but at the end of theday it is rather bland and forgettable. It is nice to look at, has agood soundtrack and has some nice values about family andfriendships(values I personally regard highly). The film is directedefficiently, and the cast is likable. Jim Carrey is not quite as goodas he once was but he still gives a likable and fun performancebringing a good touch of his manic persona. Carla Gugino is lovely too,and it was a pleasure to see Angela Lansbury again. But it is thepenguins that steal the show, they are absolutely adorable and if thereare any cute, charming and funny parts, the penguins are a big part ofwhy. The story is simple and has some charm, if rather predictable andcontrived. The script is sometimes funny, but some of it is weak, likewise with the gags but some in this case are a little too drawn outfor my tastes. Pace is mostly lively, however I think the final thirdfeels a little rushed. Overall, a cute movie but rather forgettable.6/10 Bethany Cox

Hollywood should know by now that Jim Carrey is his own actor andshould not be set aside in a movie if he is the main character. Iexplained this before in Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (1995). In theAce Ventura sequel, Carrey kept the character the same except he wasexposed to a factor that made him not as funny as the original. Thatfactor was another character of importance in the story line. Thescreenwriters should have thought twice about that move because thesequel ended up more than half as comical as the first. That's what'sdone wrong in this film.Jim Carrey plays Mr. Popper, a man with an abandoned childhood whonever got to see his father often because he was out exploring things. So he grows up to be a stinky father, or ex-father I should say, whoreally doesn't have any friends. He doesn't know how to communicatewith his children and it's rough trying to please his ex-wife. It's notuntil he has a penguin delivered to his apartment; none other than fromhis father, what a surprise. It's funny because in the beginning of thefilm, although the viewer will be able to tell that Mr. Popper is atroubled man, it is funny to see him try to convince his clients. It'swhat Carrey's known for, making us laugh because HE is the thing thatmakes us laugh.Right when the penguins start showing up on screen, things don'ttotally go downhill, but they do slump below the Carrey entertainmentmeter. Why? Because Carrey is then used as a tool for the penguins andnot the penguins themselves. Seriously, who thought of the poop jokesin this film? How childish could this get? That was one element Idespised. Yes, it is cute and adorable to see little tiny waddlingpenguins shooting out on ice sculptures and riding down streams ofwater but Jim Carrey can do that too (The Cable Guy (1996)). Andsomething like that only occurs around the end of the film. This filmisn't totally bad but its the screenplay doesn't allow Carrey to bephysically funny enough. What I did enjoy about this film was how the movie played out. Mr.Popper is a sad individual. He does his work only to please his bossesand to make a living. But when the penguins come into his life, thingsturn around for him, and who doesn't love a happy ending. The penguinsreunite him and his family: he can get along with his children and hisex-wife falls in love with him again. The only other thing I wanted topoint was what happened to Mrs. Popper's date? He was on screen acouple times and then he all of a sudden, he disappears. Okay,...whathappened? Besides this little faux pas and what I explained before, Iwas satisfied by this average Jim Carrey vehicle. The music was nicebut nothing special either.Jim Carrey has his funny moments but once again instead of being theone to make the audience laugh at someone/thing else, he's the butt endof the joke (pun intended). It's a cute story and has a nice finish butthe end result is less than real comedic entertainment from Jim Carreybecause we know he's done better in other films.

I thought this movie was quite well done. It entertained both my 6 and 10 year olds. And I did not nod off, which is always the sign of a good kids movie. It is light-hearted and feel good. Audience clapped at the end.

My family and I love to relax together and watch fun family movies. This allows us to laugh and make memories of being together. With it getting cold out and all we want to do is get under warm blankets and eat popcorn together. This movie was funny from the beginning to the end. I remember seeing the previews on TV months ago and couldn't wait to watch it. Since, my hubby and I am such huge fans of Jim Carrey, it was really nice to see a funny family movie with him it in. My kids couldn't get enough of Jim Carrey and the penguins together. On of their favorite parts was when they were dancing and a penguin on the end fell over. Besides that funny part, the whole movie was great.

This is not a great movie in anyway you look at it. The acting is typical Jim Carrie and so-so by everyone else in the cast. The story is meant for kids to read (not too deap or interesting) and it shows. The special effects are off by quite a bit at times (just look at when Jim Carrie "picks-up" something that is computer generated). With all that said it was a good little movie, although slow in the middle. You may want to wait to rent this one as nothing is added to the movie by watching it on the big screen.

The one reason I saw this movies was because it has Jim Carrey. I havenever read the book, but I hear there were quite a few changes made.Jim Carrey (for me) was the best part. He is making is return to hisold comedic roots (I only hope that there is a true sequel to themask.) Some of the penguin humor in the movies was stupid but some wasfunny. In particular I like it when Jim dances with them, and when areon a walk holding a line to stay in a group then a group of kids doingto same thing pass by. As for Jim Carrey's humor there was some goodstuff. He did a Jimmy Stewart impression, ran and talked in slow-mo,referenced a Beatles song. Which brings me to the adult humor. When heis describing the "dream land" to the old lady. He says imagine youself surrounded by tangerines, and a marmalade sky (That's the Beatlesreference.) She replies I don't do drugs. I laughed at that part. alsowhen he holds the penguins over the toilet he says "That's some goods-" he gets cut off by loudy. Over all I enjoyed my self I reallyrecommend this as a family movie. Or if you are a fan of Jim Carrey, still check it out.

This is or should be exactly what you can expect from this movie. Giventhe story (as slim as it is), the expectation shouldn't be high anyway. It is a Jim Carey vehicle. And as always you can rely on him to bringthe fun and deliver. From silly jokes to predictably story and character arch this stilldelivers quite well. As a Penguin lover myself, there is an extra bonusside to it all. I just think those little fellas are too cute. Most oftheir jokes get spoiled by the trailer of course, so maybe it is enoughto just watch that. Still if you want a nice family friendly film witha message, you can't go wrong with this one

This review is from: Mr. Popper's Penguins (Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) I am typically not a Jim Carrey fan. Generally I find him dry and uninspired but I was pleasantly surprised. This movie was funny, original and had some really good scenes. It was perfect for our 5 year old and his parents. A good way to spend 2 hours.

This film is about a successful businessman who inherits six livepenguins from his adventurer father."Mr. Popper's Penguins" looks at how a businessman having to deal withnaughty penguins who arrive at his doorstep unexpectedly. The penguinsare mischievous, cute and fun. There are quite a few funny scenes, butthere is a heavy reliance on toilet humour which possibly shows a lackof creativity. There is a warm, deeper message about loving your family members. Theparallel themes of Mr Popper's family and the penguin family areeffective, heartfelt and touching. I think "Mr. Popper's Penguins" is agood family film, providing entertainment and radiates warmth.

We were able to see a sneek preview on Tuesday, and I laughed alittle, but my daughter laughed out loud. She loved it. I would not have seen it if it was not free pass. I'm glad we saw it together.

The movie is a funny, and compassionately told story about a family. The setting is NYC NY with a quirky device which has many characters and subplots but it always lands on the events related to that family.Jim Carrey is relatively mild in his characterizations as is befitting the story.. making it believable , though outlandish.Supporting characters are equally good in carrying forward the intent of the story.Any family with kids 5+ WILL enjoy Mr. Popper's Penguins. There are CGI but impossible to see except for the ensuing laughter. The Audience in my showing applauded for several minutes at the end of the showing.

High-class New York businessman Jim Carrey's life gets turned upsidedown when his father passes away and he inherits six penguins. Thetypical would-be poignant and heartfelt situations then take place withCarrey's ex-wife (Carla Gugino) and a comic-book-styled bad guy(zookeeper Clark Gregg) making the biggest impressions within. Anotherfilm of recent memory which really is not sure what it wants to be."Mr. Popper's Penguins" is a gimmick film based on a source (achildren's book) which has limited cinematic potential. Carrey doeswhat he can, but this is beneath his talents (seeming like it has beenlight years since "The Truman Show") and the penguins' cuteness meterdrops steadily with each passing minute. The other performers seem losthere, in particular Angela Lansbury who almost appears to be in thewrong movie all together with a distracting and ultimately unwantedside-story. Plot holes galore, head-scratching outcomes, a confusingtone, and basic film-making shortcomings cage "Mr. Popper's Penguins"in the end. 2.5 out of 5 stars.

Today was my mom's birthday and she really wanted to see "Mr. Popper's Penguins" because she thought that it looked like a cute movie especially because of the penguins. The penguins are what happened to make this movie cute. By the way, when I say family film... I'm not talking about animated family films or live/animated family films... I'm talking about just live family film and "Mr. Popper's Penguins" was one of them and it's the best family film of 2011 so far. Kids would have a heck of a lot of fun watching this film. This film was more adorable than it was funny but I got a few laugh out loud moments out of the movie. The penguins definitely stole the show though. I give "Mr. Popper's Penguins" an A- and 3 out of 4 stars. It's a summer treat for all of you to enjoy this summer. Madeline Caroll is a beautiful girl and she did a good job here. Jim Carrey had brilliant and wacky acting as always which makes his movies fun. Carla Gugino and Jeffrey Tambor did a well done job as well. So yeah, go see this film because it is a lot of fun and my mom really enjoyed this film. "Mr. Popper's Penguins" made my mom's birthday the best and it meant more to my mom that my brother and I saw this film with her. I would say that your kids would have fun with a live family film like "Mr. Popper's Penguins" or enjoy the animated film "Cars 2" (which I haven't seen yet but I really want to see it). Don't miss out on this film because you might enjoy it but your kids might enjoy it most of all. Jim Carrey, Carla Gugino, Madeline Caroll, and Jeffrey Tambor did a great job acting in this family film. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY MOM AND I DEDICATE THIS REVIEW TO HER!!!!!!

This movie was a great family flick. I was reluctant to go, but was persuaded by the wife and kids. I enjoyed it a lot. It was similar to the old characters Jim Carey has played in the past. We laughed out loud several times!

Great movie, great plot. The penguins look very animated which is a downside... Great movie though., but it can be better.

Tom Popper(Jim Carrey) is all work no play, so much that his marriagedissolved, and his relationship with his kids is slowly dying, but thatall changes when he his father dies, a father he did not have much of arelationship with. What Tom Inherits is six penguins from his latefather. Tom does not want them around, but things slowly begin to startlooking up for him in his personal life, but how long will it last? If you are not willing to suspend a series of disbelief, then youprobably won't like this movie. But I found this movie entertaining.Jim Carrey is at his funniest, and does go over board with his humor, and I loved his interaction with the penguins, at times the penguinsstole the movie. Angela Landsbury was good, and Carla Gugino wasalright, I say this is a fun film for the whole family to see.
