Until he was downsized, affable, amiable Larry Crowne (Hanks) was a superstar team leader at the big-box company where hes worked since his time in the Navy. Underwater on his mortgage and unclear on what to do with his suddenly free days, Larry heads to his local college to start over. There he becomes part of a colorful community of outcasts, also-rans and the overlooked all trying to find a better future for themselves...often moving around town in a herd of scooters. In his public-speaking class, Larry develops an unexpected crush on his teacher Mercedes Tainot (Roberts), who has lost as much passion for teaching as she has for her husband. The simple guy who has every reason to think his life has stalled will come to learn an unexpected lesson when you think everything worth having has passed you by, you just might discover your reason to live.

Beware: Larry Crowne is not a romance, just a comedic cc adventure.

Again, we are presented with a movie unlike its preview. The onlysimilarity is that LARRY CROWNE is clearly a comedy and I did findmyself giggling during a few scenes. However, the film is actually anadventure story about a man who goes to college for the first time, notthe romance the preview suggests. Is going to community college reallyan adventure, especially while in foreclosure? Not at all, really, resulting in an altogether lackluster film. The story has little or no conflict and we watch as Larry goes to classand makes friends of his new peers. But where are Larry's previousfriends? He simply doesn't have any, just a very close neighbor downthe street to mentor him through his troubles. To complicate matters,he misinterprets signals from his new female best friend, causing amisdirection in plot. How many comedies intentional lead you astray tosurprise you at the end? Likely, zero. All these problems complicatethe viewing experience, but cannot create a semblance of a mainconflict to propel the story. After about 3/4 of the way into the film, Larry and his speech teacherMerci finally start a romance: This is where the preview footagefinally comes together. However, the happy ending cannot recover thedirection-less majority. Still, not a bad job for your first featurefilm, Hanks.

Larry Crowne is refreshing

Reading some of the reviews before hand left me wondering how bad thismovie might be. I do like both Hanks and Roberts so was willing to seeit anyway. I was actually pleasantly surprised at the film. The peoplewho didn't like it either didn't understand the message, or were toobusy expecting it to be something it wasn't. The mistake people makegoing into this is thinking it is just supposed to be some love story. It's really so much more than this. Both main characters learnedvaluable lessons about life, and about who they are, and what they needto do to go forward, and how they can start anew. Well written, directed and acted. The characters were real and the film really gotinto the sincerity of them. I enjoyed my experience immensely. I giveit an 8 of 10

Larry Crowne - a guy with spunk!

I liked this very gentle summer comedy about an ordinary guy whorebuilds his life following his dismissal from a large retail store. Ilove all kinds of movies and this one doesn't pretend to be more thantwo hours of fun. It doesn't have to pass rigid reality tests; it's amovie, not a documentary.Larry, played by Tom Hanks, is the type of guy we'd all like to have asa friend and when he gets fired, the audience is cheering for him toget back up. And so he does! In the process, he goes to college, joinsa scooter pack, defaults on his mortgage, and makes some usefulcontacts. The plot is as uncomplicated as it can be and yet this movienever takes a pause. Julia Roberts is very good as Larry's public speaking teacher, who issuffering from a malaise in her professional and personal life. Herrelationship with Larry ignites a spark in both of them as they recoverfrom failed relationships. The classmates, the bikers, and the peoplehe meets in his new job as a cook are the best medicine a guy inLarry's predicament could have. There are lots of laughs and feel-good moments but underneath, is thestory of a middle-aged man who suffers the humiliation that many othershave experienced. Go see it for good entertainment about a guy with alot of spunk.

Larry doesn't work... neither does anything else in this film

I have seen quite a few problems regarding this film. Yet, I'd like tobegin with something positive, so I have to say it is not that long andit can be considered to be... well, viewable... by most standards. Likesome soap commercial. It tells you something about a soap in a moststraightforward manner and that's it. In other words, you probablywon't fall asleep watching "Larry Crowne". And that's about that. Onthe other hand, the list of "issues" this film has to offer is verylong. First of all, I have seen it listed here and on some other placesas a comedy. Comedy should, by definition, be at least somewhat funny. This film has exactly two places I have found a little bit funny. Notoverwhelmingly-hysterically-over-the-top funny, but just funny. Thereare some melodramas that contain more humor than this "comedy".Secondly, the plot is a mishmash of several subplots vaguely related toeach other. For example, the main problem at the beginning of the filmis related to Larry losing his job. This problem becomes solved out ofnowhere in the middle of the film. You can say this is a MacGuffin usedto start up love story. But I think it's not the case. This dead-endstory about Larry losing his job is here only to try to relate tomillions of Americans who have recently lost their jobs. I am fromSerbia, so I cannot relate to that problem, and watching it from theside, it becomes even more obvious that there is no explanation forthis part of the plot. Then, there is a story of friendship with a muchyounger girl, and that part of the story looks just pathetic. There isno psychological explanation for that friendship, her "motorcycle gang"is composed entirely of no-name characters and literally none of themspeaks a single word. Then, there is a love story. The main story. Ifthere was a filmed love story with less on-screen chemistry, I havemissed it. I just don't get it. Julia Roberts and Tom Hanks look likepeople from different dimensions, or, to be more precise, from entirelydifferent films. Which leads to one of the main problems - acting. TomHanks is a great actor, he has proved that fact many times. But,obviously, he needs a director he won't be able to see only in mirror. His acting is flat, I wasn't sure if Larry was retarded or a genius, ifhe was unconfident or overly confident, I don't know what attracts himto Julia Roberts' character and vice versa, I know nothing about him.The director Hanks and the actor Hanks together work upon creating atotally inexplicable changes in characterization. Roberts, on the otherhand, is a little better, yet again, far from her best. The otheractors don't have much to offer, but I would say that Rami Malek andGeorge Takei use their chances to make likable characters. Yet, that'sfar from enough. The whole film is a mess and just doesn't work neitheras a comedy, nor a romantic comedy, nor a drama, it just doesn't work. And there are far too many problems regarding this film to say therewas something that could have made this film better. It was irreparablefrom the very beginning, it's incoherent, slow and empty. And if youwant to see it, think once again, that would be my most sinceresuggestion.

Believable plot, good acting, fair script.

A light-hearted romp through the vagaries of reality... OK, so it wasshallow and slow. Yet, I liked it very much! It reminds me of 2001's"The Shipping News" (my all-time favorite film), in which thevictimized loser challenges his trials and ultimately gets the girl.(Spoiler!) It is, obviously, a tale for our time. The woes associatedwith his divorce and home loan were very familiar to this divorcedhomeowner. Nonetheless, as a 20-year teaching veteran at a Californiacommunity college, I must say the classroom scenes were very realistic,as were the dingy offices. My thanks to anyone whom might offer thename of the LA area college where the filming took place. (I think Imight have taught there at one time...) -Dr. M

It's just so happy in it's mediocrity!

'LARRY CROWNE': Two and a Half Stars (Out of Five)Tom Hanks directs his second feature film (after 1996's 'THAT THING YOUDO'). He also co-wrote the screenplay with Nia Vardalos (the writer andstar of 'MY BIG FAT Greek WEDDING', which Hanks produced) and stars inthe film with Julia Roberts. With all that high caliber A list talentattached you'd think the film would be something special (especiallyfor a summer release) but it's not. It's just an average romanticcomedy with nothing witty, new or original to offer. There are a fewlaughs and touching moments but for the most part the film is mediocreat best.Hanks plays the title role of Larry Crowne, a humble and well likedemployee of a successful retail store who suddenly finds himself laidoff when the store has to resort to downsizing in order to maintainhigh profits. Although he was extremely good at his job (and employeeof the month nine times) he's let go due to his lack of collegeexperience. Forced to sell his house and his car to get by he decidesto go back to school in order to better himself and improve his chancesof finding employment. Once at school he finds new friends in fellowoutcasts and develops a crush on his speech teacher Mercedes Tainot(Roberts). Mrs. Tainot has lost all passion in her job and love for herporn addicted husband (Bryan Cranston) and finds inspiration in Larry.Larry of course finds new inspiration in life (as well) as his wholeworld begins to change. The film is funny at times (nothing laugh out loud but it is mildlyamusing) and it's also inspirational to a certain extent (but nothingwe haven't seen before). With Hanks and Roberts starring in the filmyou just expect an attempt at something more at least. It just feels sohappy in it's mediocrity, which is a little bizarre coming from whatappears to be a big summer movie (at first glance) with two ofHollywood's biggest stars in the leads. I loved Hank's firstdirectorial effort, 'THAT THING YOU DO', and it's actually one of myfavorite films of his. So knowing he has so much more to offer makesthis all the more disappointing. Not a bad film just very far from agood one.Watch our review show 'MOVIE TALK' at:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEq_X_axUaU

Courageous, but kinda irritating and immature, audiovisual essay

Sadly for Larry Crowne, I saw "Koyaanaqatsi", another R audiovisualmetaphorical essay, before this one. While I found "Koyaanaqatsi" so brilliant and fascinating that itinstantly went up to the top 10 of my favorite movies list, I didn'tcare that much for Larry Crowne. It's still a very interesting essay, and has the great merit to be thefirst cinematic attempt (that I know of) to "talk" without words *atall*(there are a bunch of movies out there that do this, actually, butonly in some scenes - like in "the Red shoes" or "2001")... but LarryCrowne can't compete with Koyaanaqatsi, that is not only much betterconceived and directed, but has a much more adequate musical score.Sorry guys, but this is no Philip Glass score, to my ears, it's simplyvery poor, almost sloppy. And it never goes along with the visualnarrative, it just plays like if it had nothing to do with the imagesshown, which I found very annoying. I think the guy had it 100% rightin "Candyman", though. Not so here.Larry Crowne is indeed a very interesting experience, and has of coursegorgeous cinematography and stunning images (and an incredible namethat I have to copy'n paste, LOL), but if you want the "real stuff", gofor Fricke's more mature and deeply moving masterpiece, "Koyaanaqatsi".

offended

Within the first 10 minutes the movie uses the derogatory word retardmultiple times. Tom Hanks is a legend and has always been a favorite ofmine and fortunately he does not use the 'r' word but it is stillOFFENSIVE. As an advocate for the special needs of this world I am verydisturbed that this would happen in a movie with such an admirableactor. But after watching the whole movie that was the only offensivescene. I hope that in the future the director and writer of movies willtake into consideration that the use of derogatory words is offensiveto many and would consider revising the use of that word. Thank you fortaking the time to read this and I hope many others will stand up forthose who cannot.

Not great, but not horrible either

i love Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts films and had hoped that the twotogether would be awesome, but i was a little disappointed. i cannotexactly put my finger on it, but it felt a little off. Larry (TomHanks) loses his job from a Walmart-type store because he did not go tocollege. It seems far-fetched, but i let it slide. So, what does he do?He goes to college. Who is his teacher? Mercedes Tainot played by JuliaRoberts. So you can fill in the puzzle from there. It is a typicalchick flick, but with a little quirkiness. Unfortunately the quirkinesswas the character Talia, which was a little to strange and never playedout or explained fully. One good point for the film, it was a throwback to a more wholesome time before every filmed had sex and foallanguage in every other scene. i hope both Hanks and Roberts find abetter vehicle for their talent next time.

Larry Crowne

I was kinda surprised when Tom Hanks stepped in for Richard Gere in"Larry Crowne", the way too late for anyone to care "Pretty Woman"Sequel. So now our big shot, likeshimselfsomehookers, billionaire has fallenvictim to the recession like everyone else, and is now unemployed andjust kind of all around sad, really. He finds out quickly that a degreein whoremongering doesn't get him anywhere so he swallows his pride andgoes back to school. In a severe twist of fate, made even punchier byall of the 'teacher/schoolboy' fantasies they've played out in thepast, Julia Roberts is teaching the class: "How sell your soul to thedark lord and never age......Read the rest of this review @ http://skipnappan.com

This one seems to be an attempt to create a blockbuster to earn some cash.

Why do I never learn? Why do I keep going to Tom Hanks films, when theydisappoint so consistently? My latest Tom Hanks mistake is an unfunnycomic caper named "Larry Crowne". After the debacles that were "TheGreen Mile", "Forrest Gump", "Turner & Hooch", now comes this newatrocity from Hanks himself in the director's seat, who earlier hadmade the rotten-only-in-patches film "That Thing You Do!" (what's withthe atrocious title?), a genial American take on "Phir Hera Pheri".Somehow I evaded "The Ladykillers". Even I could tell that Hanks plusthe blandly beautiful and seriously wooden Julia Roberts would be anindustrial-strength double whammy to be avoided at any cost. So, I'm a total loser for going to watch Tom Hanks movies. It's justthat he appears to have absolutely no instinct for choosing good films, and sometimes, inspite of this, he ends up in a competent entertainer("The Shawshank Redemption", "The Bonfire of the Vanities" "CinderellaMan" was a guilty pleasure...tacky, but Melanie Griffith wasfascinating. Hanks was very good in "The Polar Express", co-starring anempty, souless landscape.), but mostly he works in simply dreadfulmovies. At the wrap of each awful flick, he probably drawls, "I'll havemy check now, thank you very much!" and toddles off to the nextexcruciatingly bad film, gummy grin and all.Rob Riggle, Sy Richardson, and the ever reliable Boman Irani (playing aGujarati businessman, this time) are the other men in this movie with afrat boy sensibility. And for the frat boys, we must have bodaciousbabes, so the polished and professional Roxana Ortega, the usuallysmart and sensuous Sarah Mahoney, and the sexy, but frankly terribleJulie Wagner, a fully clothed Tina Huang (hello!), and Lilette Dubeyare roped in to do the needful. To be fair, there is about 10 minutes of delightful nonsense, whenpractically the entire cast lands up under various pretexts at ameeting with Hanks to chat up the titular "Larry Crowne" and I didlaugh out aloud once, but that meant sitting through 1.5 hours toarrive at the funny bit, and then another 45 or so minutes when thingswent back to being unamusing. The movie is full of loopholes and flaws. We were expecting somethrilling drama, and not a grade Z movie.I don't know if these observations have anything at all to do with"Larry Crowne", but I felt like letting off some steam after beinggypped yet again by an Tom Hanks movie. See if you can neatly side-stepthis mess...

No crowning achievement for Hanks

Oh dear, I so wanted to like this movie - but I felt so let down. TomHanks, as the eponymous affable store assistant dismissed because hedoesn't have a college degree (isn't that illegal?), and Julia Roberts,as an (unlikely) college professor cynically giving speech classes, aretwo of the most likable stars of a certain age in the Hollywoodfirmament and the idea of a romance between middle-aged charactersseemed so refreshing after moviedom's excessive focus on pubescentteens. Yet this is a rom-com with too little rom and very little com.Sadly we have to hold Hanks responsible since he is the director (hissecond effort after "That Thing You Do!") as well as the lead actor andhe even co-writes the script which is so lame and limp. Really, givingup an SVU for a scooter and hanging out with kids who think it's coolto wear your shirt out, click your fingers and practice feng shui isnot exactly the sort of life-changing drama that too many Americanworkers are experiencing from the current recession.Once again Hanks is playing Mr Everyman who finds himself a fish out ofwater, but he has done this so, so much better in movies ranging from"Big" to "Forrest Gump" and this feeble effort was never going to behis crowning achievement.

Deserves better than this

This is really a good movie that should be viewed by all young people.I have to say, I'm surprised to see it is not scoring much higher. Itis not laced up with sex or violence, so perhaps that is a factor. Butit is a fairly honest look at life in America for many people. If I hadto take a star, I guess it would be for the subliminal pizza marketing. But perhaps it was just my imagination. The script was right on withportraying of the community college experience. I would like to haveseen a few more scenes from the public speaking classroom. It shouldhave been easy to produce, and I think a lot of people could haveidentified with that type of program and how interesting they can be.This is just a simple, feel-good movie that keeps you entertained.

A brain-dead unrealistic farce instead of a comedy

If you would like to know what the Hollywood connections this guy got, watch this movie. Because you'd know that three movie productioncompanies all jumped in together to allow this guy to do whatever helikes to do: writing the screenplay, directing and acting as the maincharacter. Do you know that these Hollywood movie production companiesgot to pay him 3 different invoices, no matter how the movie turnedout? I totally agree with one of the reviewers' "The humor has to beclose to the reality" quote. If it failed to grasp the basic comedyrequirement, then the movie is not qualified for being a "comedy" but afarce, a misinterpretation of "comedy". So based on the basic foundation of comedy, what we got here are:1) The middle aged guy was laid off and lost his job and he would haveto get by with his short-term meager monthly unemployment checks. So heshould be frustrated, depressed and desperate. 2) The guy decided to goto the community college to re-educated himself in order to re-enterthe ever changing job market. So he must choose some more trendycourses to make him, a past prime middle aged guy, an employablecandidate again in the job market. But what we got here? Did he reallyconcentrate on his classes to salvage his career or just a regular job?3) The guy suddenly started riding a scooter day in and day out.Motorcycle driver's license? Still got the extra money to buy amotorbike? 4) Any chance in the real world a guy like him would be ableto hook up with the female teacher in the community college? A joblessguy, actually a certified loser? Okay, who got a good heart, agentleman, so what? Imagine yourself as the guy in this pathetic movie,do you still has the intention, the guts, the enthusiasm, the heart tohave a romance? The dating usually caused a lot of money, from anunemployment check? 5) The female instructor played by the washoutRoberts is another pathetic miscast. She didn't look convincing in theleast. 6) The romance? One naive jobless guy hooked up with a bitterand cynical educator? What we got here is just a wishful thinking scenario and unrealisticstoryline that doomed to crash and burn from the very beginning, butTom Hanks still got paid mucho deneros, no matter how outlandish andridiculous the movie is. Because he is one of the most powerful guys inHollywood, connections are everything, no matter what kind of crap hethrows to those movie companies. He could always keep up his image onscreen with botox injections. This is a very stupid movie, absolute tasteless.

Surprisingly Fun Movie to Watch!

I have to be in a rare mood to watch romantic comedies but I could notpass up the chance to see what I would consider both the King and Queenof ROM COMs on the screen together -- Hanks and Roberts. Although theyworked together in "Charlie Wilson's War", this film may be a first inthat they are in a romantic comedy opposite one another. This movie exceeded my expectations! It was an extremely fun experienceand the humorous pace was very consistent throughout. There were neverpredictable lapses that one comes to expect with a romantic comedy.Very cleaver humor throughout.I would have to say that it would have been hard for anyone other thanHanks and Roberts to pull off, because much of the humor wassituational and went deeper than cheap one-liners. The emotionalexpression displayed by two of the best actors in the business madethis movie work.Veterans may like this one as well, and not just for the theme about aNavy veteran coming to grips with life. There were two former MarineCorps Public Affairs Officers -- Dale Dye and Rob Riggle. Riggle wasonce again at the top of his game and it was refreshing to see Dye showhis range as an actor beyond military roles. The only negative comment I would make is the color seemed like it wasoff a bit. It may have been the effect they were aiming for or it couldhave been the theater I saw it in, but it seemed like what you wouldget in a 110 camera for those of us old enough to remember them. Also, Cedric the Entertainer seemed to be billed heavily butunderutilized.Overall, this was a sweet, engaging but most of all hilarious film. Iam not easily moved but I had to dab the corners of my eyes a few timesdue to inspiration vs. sadness.I highly recommended catching this film in the theaters because I thinkthis will develop a cult following. Trust me, you don't simply want toearmark this for when the DVD comes out or you will miss out on thechatter about this one.

Larry Crowne

I like this film. It was very interesting. I have been waiting for a good Tom Hanks film to be released for some time now. Julia Roberts was also very good in the role of a teacher. I would recommend this film to anyone who likes a good clean movie. It doesn't have a lot of curse words, it has no drugs or sex involved and it is a good clean movie that anyone can see. The acting was good and this film has a very good message. Don't listen to the critics. They never like anything. I was not bored by this movie, as some critics would have you think.

Likable comedy, although nothing seems to be at stake

Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts are likable as always (this is the firstmovie I've seen them in together), and they give the film what itdeserves. I think it could have used some complications, though. Sure,he loses a job, then he goes to college, and also joins bikers. There'snot any plot beyond that. I am recommending the movie, but think whatthis movie could have been if this guy was really having a crisis. Themovie is apparently supposed to be about a guy who redeems himself, butthere's none of that, aside from the fact that he signs up for collegecourses. How about a villain, maybe? And was the yard sale storylinereally necessary? Still, "Larry Crowne" is fun to watch.*** out of ****
