The Old West.. where a lone cowboy leads an uprising against a terror from beyond our world. 1873. Arizona Territory. If you want a decent action movie with a decent story
I'm not a big fan of Daniel Craig films but this one I must admit Iactually enjoyed.From the trailer and from what i'd heard around theweb I was not expecting much at all from this. It's got guns,aliens,cowboys,Injuns(^^) and a sexy alien .Yes, it may end in a result you were expecting but so do rollercoasters . I'm not gonna give you a full lowdown on each character orthe plot, i'm just gonna say if you want a decent action film then youcould do worse than choosing this one.The effects are very good ,nottoo much like some films in these times of CGI. When I see this for adecent price on Blu-ray I'll be buying it . Don't believe the bad hype,judge it for yourselves.

Movie GREAT - AMAZon Streaming - TERRIBLE
This review is from: Cowboys & Aliens (Extended Version) (Amazon Instant Video) Would have loved the movie a whole lot more if the streaming was better. Sound was off from picture and the dubbing was terrible. I tried everything to get it working at an acceptable rate. Amazon really needs to work on this or leave it to Netflix as they always did a good job on my computer.

Not awful, not good either
The cowboy parts were OK, filmed beautifully. The plot rules changeevery 15 minutes, which is unsurprising, because there were about 8different writers, so figure on a complete huh? with every change ofwriter. Characters who knew nothing the first third of the movie turnout to be experts on the situation. The aliens are silly. Theirmotivation for being here is pretty bland, and given how powerful theyare, there's no reason for their human research hobby. Took itself muchtoo seriously to have so much inconsistency. Made me miss Firefly,where at least the world worked in an internally consistent way, andwhere the enemy was us, which is a lot more believable. Craig is prettygood, but underused, Ford plays a guy that he apparently (andobviously) changed the character of midstream, Favreau has done muchbetter, but the dog is just great.

A whole lot of aliens and a whole lot of cowboys and Indians
5 out of 10 because I really enjoyed it... and you will too if you turnoff your brain for a couple of hours. If you really think about it, itdoes miss the mark... It could have been SO great but there was reallyno plot... or rather the plot that was, was so simple it ended up beingsilly!! Good actors, who embody their characters really well, wonderfulCGI effects and rather unique and cool looking aliens with sharp teethand bad intentions... if only there was a good story there.I waited so long for this film to come out in cinemas, I was giddy withexcitement but the film falls short of the mark. When I walked out ofthe movie I was all "yeah, nice!!" but after I read a few reviews andthought is over and memory of the cool effects is fading, I find myselfdisappointed at the lack of a plot. It's like the writers/producerssaid "Yeah! Cowboys AND ALIENS!! This will be cool! Let's do that..."and then set off to shoot some cowboys and aliens together... with noreal purpose.Why are the aliens attacking humans in a remote desert area? Becausethere is gold underground... and aliens want the gold. For what, theydon't say. It would have been cool if they wanted it let's say becausetheir planet's survival depended on it or they ate it or something. Butit doesn't specify... they just want gold. And the aliens we do see inthe movie, are just one ship, one scouting party. They are takinghumans and torture them and kill them (with ease I might add) to "findyour weaknesses"... uhm, they are 7 feet tall, with pinchers and sharpteeth.. surely they have understood by now that one blow and a humandies... why keep taking more? And apparently we never saw them againbecause at the end their ship gets blown up so that sends a signal tothe other aliens that the gold on Earth is not worth their trouble.Olivia Wilde, is an alien too... she took the human form to walk amongus... her people were killed off by the aliens. How did she come toEarth? What does she look like as an alien? Where is her ship? Was shethe sole survivor of her race? These are just a tiny fraction of allthe unanswered questions and plot holes in the film. Seriously, don'tthey know by now, we, the audience, hate it when things are left in theair or when the explanation is ludicrous at best?? If only the story was better it would have been a wonderful, fantasticmovie. Heck it had everything else going for it!!! Maybe if I was 15,"trivial" things like a good plot and character development wouldn'thave mattered because... COWBOYS!! And ALIENS!! IN ONE FILM!! But, I am33 and things that go "boom" fail to fascinate me these days...Still, not a waste of your time or money... if you can turn your brainoff for a couple of hours, you will enjoy it, it is well made, withkiller CGI and a whole lot of scary looking and unfriendly aliens...not too bad at all.

Future Western Steampunk Classic (Spoiler-free)
If you're a Western Steampunk fanatic then you will definitely want to watch this film. It has every bit of what you're looking for from the genre. Not having read the books, I was pleased with the plot development and characters. It's still a very mainstream movie so don't expect anything ground breaking.

I dont understand Spielberg, he is such a gifted movie maker. This movie was trash.............I dont believe this movie will do well, in blu ray sales, as the motion picture, was extreemly boring, and stupid. as well as to far fetched............did I menchion the popcorn was good though.......

Surprised nobody thought of this concept sooner
The premise of this film is so good that you wonder why any sci-fi screenwriter didn't think of it sooner. Based on the graphic novel by Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, this film, directed by Jon Favreau (Iron Man (Two-Disc Ultimate Edition + BD Live) [Blu-ray]), takes a 1950s B-movie idea and -- thanks to a great script (adapted by the writers behind TV's "Lost"), great setting/cinematography, and great acting -- turns out one great summer action flick! The trio of Craig, Ford and Wilde each give spot-on performances. Next to Super 8 (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) and Transformers: Dark of the Moon (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy), "Cowboys" is one of the best action films of the summer. The ensemble is superb and all make intriguing characters. Underrated actors Adam Beach, Sam Rockwell and Clancy Brown (whose character gives one of the greatest contemporary explanations of God) shine as I was interested to know their pasts even more. I can't believe I'm going to say this, but, also, in a summer inundated with comic superhero movies, it's refreshing to see a comic adaptation where the hero is anti-hero and doesn't sport tights. The title may sound cheesy but it works (besides, what else could you call this film?). Nevertheless, there were a few parts that didn't work for me; but they were very few and far between. If anything, I just kept thinking while watching this: "I can't wait for the next Bond film!" Overall, the mix of western and sci-fi works well and I'm glad someone finally put it to film. On an end note, if you are a big fan of mixing westerns with sci-fi, definitely check out Firefly: The Complete Series [Blu-ray] on DVD/Netflix! It might not have aliens, but you'll be happy you checked it out! Shiny!

The story of the movie is not compatible.
I think this movie will make out well, whether it is a matter oftechnology, graphics and film actor. But it makes sense about thealiens that we have memories with it in the past that it is to live inan alien spacecraft that lost it. But overall I think it's good enough.However, the aura of alien creatures, it can also make movies mysteryhidden fear and danger. The film itself will sag in the cowboy era. Butthere are these alien technology that has been immortalized not less.Most of the time the movies nominated for best picture I would careless to see, however, this movie is defantly one that grabbed myattention from the start and defantly deserves Oscar and Golden GlobeGold. Grab a cliche and mount up
The only thing original in this film is the title and premise, which everyone does their best to bring down to earth and deflate in the most unoriginal way possible.Badly designed and executed. Aliens lassoing from spaceships???? Huh?????? Old chestnut of the cattle baron with the spoiled,rotten son. Watch the Searchers or Meek's Cutoff , not star drek like this. What a shame, all the toys and no imagination to play with them. I wish i could give this minus 6 stars.

It's a movie about Cowboys and Aliens....duh!!
I knew we were going to see this movie before I started reading thesereviews. I don't know what everyone was expecting and some of thecomments here are soooooo lame. This is a movie about cowboys(excellently played by the lovely Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford) andaliens, slimy "Alien" like creatures. It has a story! Those of yousaying there's no reason for the aliens being there are nuts. They arethere because it's a movie with aliens in it! And those of you tryingto make this movie into some sort of cryptic message movie are alsonuts. It's a story about these cowboys that encounter the aliens, fightthem, win and then they go about being cowboys again. It's all sosimple, no fuss, no muss! I say, go see this movie and enjoy it, it's agood movie!

A fun movie with a cool premise.
This review is from: Cowboys & Aliens (Extended Version) (Amazon Instant Video) This is a fun movie with a cool premise....basically, aliens are attacking and stealing people in the old west. It falls on a posse of cowboys to try and track the aliens down to recover their loved ones and find out why the aliens are here and doing what they are doing. Daniel Craig makes a great hard-bitten cowboy. He is both a good guy and a hardened criminal, although he is also amnesiac, and wakes to find a strange bracer attached to his wrist. As seen in the commercials, the bracer is a piece of alien technology and a powerful weapon. Harrison Ford plays an ex-Colonel, and is also a hard-a^%. They essentially represent two factions forced to team up to track the aliens. Add Olivia Wilde, who is classically beautiful as always, and a bunch of other recognizable actors, and you end up with a pretty good cast.The story itself has some highs and lows. Some points of the plotline are a little hard to swallow, even with the fantastic nature of the movie. However, the development is paced well, and the fun outweighs the flaws. They even mix in some social messages regarding racism and greed into the equation. The aliens are pretty cool looking and the desert settings are really stunning at times.This was a good movie overall. It isnt very cerebral, but if you enjoy an action film with a little meat to the story, i think you will enjoy this. If you are highly critical of any movie that isnt Shawshank or some such, you should probably stay clear of this one.Enjoy!

Interesting Retro Alien Invasion Flick
This film has teamed up two great actors (although some critics says that they lacked chemistry - I disagree). The film has good measures of suspense, action and some emotional depth. The movie (based in 1873, Arizona) starts off with an outlaw [Daniel Craig] that has a strange device around one of his wrists. However, he is unable to remove this object. Just like a typical adventure game, he has no memory of his recent past, as the movie unfolds he begins to get flashbacks.What makes this movie unique is its time setting, hence it does not come across like another one of those alien invasion films that have flooded cinemas over the last couple of years.

Obviously Amnesia Cures Bad Attitudes
The biggest problem I have with this film - we don't care for any ofthe characters.The beginning of the film presents us with two unlikable leads, andthen asks us to care about them because they can't remember who theywere, or because of their new-found plight.This film is already at a disadvantage combining two genre's thatrarely get combined(especially with any success). And in those terms,the movie really isn't all that bad. The effects are pretty nice, andthe film goes with the flow and ends a lot stronger than it begins.CHeck out "Burrowers" for another "average" cross-genre film that issimilar to this - only it's better and has virtually no budget or bigname actors.There's a love interest subplot that also lacks punch because Craigplays a guy that just lost his 'real' love interest; not to mention thenew love interest isn't who we think she is(which presents a wholedifferent problem for the relationship between the two).The action and Daniel Craig do their best to "save the day" with theaudience and the characters' friends and family, but in the end, theaudience gets left in the dark.Aliens attacking the wild west is way down the list of unbelievableplot situations here, and that's obviously not a good thing.You MIGHT like this if you liked:Jonah Hex, The Day the Earth StoodStill(remake), and Purgatory, AND I think this movie is a small notchbelow those very average films.48/100I didn't expect the storyline to be complex, but the script does areally terrible job of molding the characters. This was a HUGE waste ofresources.

I didnt have unreal expectations
I went to see this because the concept seemed so ridiculous, i thought why not it might be good for a laugh. I didn't assume that because Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford were in it, it would some how be a spectacular movie. There was no other movie that I wanted to see at the time so I went. I liked it in so much as it delivered exactly what the title promised. Was it a revelation? No of course not the movie is named Cowboys and Aliens. Would I have waited in long lines and paid full price? No of course not the movie is named Cowboys and Aliens. I was entertained and amused enough to watch the whole movie and not walk out on it (which I have done many times in the past). I could have done without Olivia Wilde's character, but that could just be not liking her and not the character. I'll buy Cowboys and Aliens when its on sale, and watch it when i want to be grossed out by the disgusting aliens, be amused by the ridiculous premise of the movie and admire the way Mr. Craig seems to make any outfit look good.

My main problem with the film is that thetitle to me suggest that this is an expensive B-movie entertainmentstatus that is not meant to be taken seriously, however after seeingthe film I didn't find myself entertained as much as i thought it wouldbe the title but feels more like they went on a straight-forwarddramatic piece but ultimately falls in the ridiculously silly ratherthan ridiculously fun. It almost seems like the writers were not surewhich direction to take with this piece, whether they wanted to play upthe entertainment more or go for a dramatic A-Movie. It would have donethe title justice if they had played the comedic up to another level offun. I understand they're paying tribute to the best of both genre(Western & Science fiction) in one film but its a missed opportunityfor the creative team to go beyond from dramatic to crazy fun.The effects are quite good especially the battle sequences and thespaceships are nicely done. Although, the so-called aliens are ratherstupid in this film because there way to freaky and too big to becalled Aliens the look more like freaky monsters. They could simplifiedthe aliens to not look like creatures and add scenes with the aliens toexpand their roles to give their means of aliens attack more substanceto its title. The cast gives their best efforts but ultimately thecharacterizations fell flat mostly specifically Olivia Wilde's role isa big waste of screen time and adds nothing to the dynamics of thesupporting characters. Harrison Ford is the standout performance who isthe only one adds the slightest bit of entertainment in the entirefilm. While Daniel Craig is pretty good but his face seems to be veryemotionless through most of the film.The Score composed by Harry Gergson-Williams is so fantastic. It has avery mysterious and eerie orchestration to give the score amelodramatic feel to the action, and uses guitars to add a balanced ofwhimsy to the western elements to the score. For which he blends theauthenticity of both genres different style of music in scope andrange. It is so well done that its quite something to listen, one of myfavorite action score I've heard. The score My favorite tracks include"Jake Lonergan", "Palms to Heaven", "Col. Woodrow Dolarhyde", "Attack &Abduction", "Emmett's Close Encounter", "Jake's Army", "Godspeed", "ISee them", "Return to the Cabin", and "See You Around".So overall, it was not nearly as terrible as i thought it could havebeen but still isn't that great and has its major flaws. The effectsare nice in some aspects of the film mainly in the battle scenes andthe Spaceships are nicely done with the exception of the so-calledaliens who look more like big creatures then aliens. While I loved theWilliams score is just about the only few best parts of the film, aswell as Harrison Ford who takes the cake in standout performance addingthe slightest bit of entertainment in the entire film. While, the storycould use more work and should have played the entertainment card to awhole another level to do the title justice to what it suggest as anoutlandish concept. It's worth the watch but is an unfortunate dud. Irecommend you rent this movie to see for yourself.
