Decent Escapist Fare; Exceeded Low Expectations

Overall, don't let the goofy title keep you from at least renting it,because it is a fun trip and good escapism fare. It also helps to havelow expectations! Yes, the title and some of the previews made thisappear to be another cheesy over-the-top action film of today.....butwith Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig in the lead roles, it had to bemore than just some corny B-film....and it was. It was fun to watch.Sure, it's goofy, especially in the last 30 minutes, but it'sdefinitely a fun ride.Craig, as "Jake Lonergan," was the star, and the most interestingperson, probably because his history and character (and the strangedevice on his wrist) weren't revealed right away, just in bits andpieces as the story evolved. He did a nice job with the Americanaccent, too.The aliens and their ships were kinda cool, too - not the best I'veseen, but not bad. I'd say the same for the special-effects, overall, too. The sound was outstanding, with good rear speaker contributions.Like Craig, Olivia Wilde as "Ella Swensen" also was a mysteriouscharacter and her nature wasn't revealed until 3/4ths of the waythrough, either. It was shocking to see Ford as a "bad guy" but "Woodrow Dolarhyde"slowly changed his attitude and became more like the "Indiana Jones"guy who know and love.

A Thrilling Tribute to B-Flickery

What else can be said about a movie titled, "Cowboys and Aliens?" Notsince the days of our dear Bella Legosi have we been forced toencounter a title so humorous and energy draining. The title itself wasa draw back from the rest of the film; it would have been much moresuspenseful if the title of the film had not revealed to the viewerright away that aliens would be featured. My dear wife summed up the entire plot of the film, "Take the braceletfrom the "Scorpion King," put it on James Bond, marry that to "Red DeadRedemption," and add a few blood- thirsty aliens." The plot was verypredictable, the dialog was cheap, corny, and amusing, and the effectsseemed to hearken back to the days of the Playstation 2. Charactersseemed flat, dull, and boring, while the only redeeming point aboutthis movie was the performance of Clancy Brown (who played "The Kurgen"in the first "Highlander" movie), which really brought the wholeB-movie experience full circle. My advice, invest your time and money in a more well deserving summermovie. Or better yet, go to the video store and rent one of the oldLegosi or Carlof movies. You will get as many laughs from theridiculous story and cheap dialog as you could from this movie, for amere fraction of the cost.

Not awful, not good either

The cowboy parts were OK, filmed beautifully. The plot rules changeevery 15 minutes, which is unsurprising, because there were about 8different writers, so figure on a complete huh? with every change ofwriter. Characters who knew nothing the first third of the movie turnout to be experts on the situation. The aliens are silly. Theirmotivation for being here is pretty bland, and given how powerful theyare, there's no reason for their human research hobby. Took itself muchtoo seriously to have so much inconsistency. Made me miss Firefly, where at least the world worked in an internally consistent way, andwhere the enemy was us, which is a lot more believable. Craig is prettygood, but underused, Ford plays a guy that he apparently (andobviously) changed the character of midstream, Favreau has done muchbetter, but the dog is just great.

Disappointing

With all the talent involved with this movie, it really should havebeen so much more. The dialogue is clunky, and often points out theobvious. The characters are hard to relate to, especially OliviaWilde's character: she is so withdrawn and seemingly around for noreason until she explains what she is; which since we see none of hertrue self just makes her even less relatable. Craig's character isinteresting until his mystery is completely explained half way in,which really hurts the story's momentum. The movie never really canfind itself tonally, which really makes it hard to watch. The aliensare cool enough, but their appearances are always tiresome due topoorly choreographed action scenes. Watch True Grit and Alienback-to-back instead.

cowboys, cowgirls, indians etc. and aliens as well

welcome to 19th century Independence Day. The aliens are here and arehere to wipe us off. Looking for gold, they of course chose to land inthe USA (instead of for instance a national bank holding bullionreserve). The H. sapiens find out, and forming a team, they locate, andfinish off the aliens before they finish us off. The plot is similar toSwiss cheese (although I prefer the cheese): full of holes. Thus, it isunclear why the downed alien fleeing back home has to be in the sameplace as the slower humans chasing him. Neither is it clear why thealiens show up to steal the gold in the thief's lair rather thanearlier in the diligence he attacked to steal the gold himself. Thehumans are kept in an abulic state, but the "hero" is able to slash offhis torturer. The aliens are said to have poor sight, yet got noproblems in the daylight open-air battle. And the aliens look likeother monsters running amok in other Hollywood flicks. Of course thereis a ref or two to the Nazis: the Mengele torturer, and the pile ofgold (including teeth), which for some odd reasons had just accumulatedrather than used by the aliens. The movie is worth a four-letter word, and that's why I gave it a four.

Cowboys & Aliens (2011) - Cowboys + Aliens = PERFECT POPCORN ENTERTAINMENT!

This western sci-fi mash-up, directed by Jon Favreau, mixes two of thebest genres in film, and stars two of the best leading men in cinema. The movie begins with Daniel Craig (being best known as James Bond)playing an outsider who wakes up with unexpected amnesia, with an aliendevice strapped to his wrist. Not knowing that aliens are invading theOld West, this outsider teams up with Harrison Ford (being best knownas Indiana Jones) as a cattle rancher, and Olivia Wilde as a mysteriousfemale accomplice, to help defeat these extra-terrestrials, and savetheir friends and family. The movie begins like you're in the middle ofan entertaining adventure. Director Jon Favreau has done a terrific jobof mixing these two classic genres, and he made it happen in such acool way. The art direction, recreating the Old West, is beautifully"picturesque". The special effects showing the alien invasions aresuper breathtaking. But I really didn't like the way they portrayed thealiens, when they looked more like "District 9" aliens, instead of theclassic "E.T." type of thing. I enjoy watching Daniel Craig andHarrison Ford play iconic roles, and the thought of watching them in amovie together is priceless. But neither of their performances werethat special, but they do make the movie fun. Rounding up thesupporting cast is newcomer Olivia Wilde, who is so beautiful to watchon screen with her incredible blue eyes. But she doesn't reveal anyback-story to her character, it's like she has no personality. But shestill does a pretty good job. Sure, this movie isn't an Oscar-worthyfilm, and it's not one of the best movies ever made, but it is aperfect popcorn movie. Anyways, if you are in the mood for a classicsummer movie with cowboys, extra-terrestrials, pretty ladies, coolspecial effects, and beautiful landscapes, you will not bedisappointed. "Cowboys and Aliens" is the perfect example of a classicpopcorn summer flick. "Cowboys and Aliens", in my review, "a funadventure, classic summer entertainment".

The title says it all, in a good way

To answer the question I've heard repeatedly - it's a western, it doeshave some sci-fi elements but in fact it's closer to horror movies inthe style of Alien and it's sequels than to real sci-fi. Namely, thesci-fi elements are here to extend the range of the action and to upthe challenge faced by the heroes not to set the moral core of thefilm. It's well paced and well shot. The cast is impeccable, in factit's the best role I've seen of Harison Ford in a long while. and it'sthe best movie I've seen from Jon Favreau, despite liking his Iron Man.The man has a knack for comics adaptations, and he bested himself here(yes I know it was a graphic novel, from the movie's viewpoint it's thesame thing). The only real problem I had with the film is the fact thatmost of the secondary roles were too "cartoonish" - that is flatI liked how it gathers all the elements of the western cliché to reachthe movie's climax. That's what a homage is all about. And if you stillhave your doubts, wait for the very final scene and you'll realize too- this was a western. It does call for some suspension of judgment, butwhat sci-fi or comics adaptation doesn't.

Don't Waist Your Money

This review is from: Cowboys & Aliens (Extended Version) This was a giant waist of money. Not to mention that I lost 2hr 16mins of my life. It was bad on a level I haven't seen since the first Twilight. This movie was about as entertaining as watching paint dry.At least that's free.

Gold rustlers from outer space...

With a haggard Harrison Ford settling into his "crotchety curmudgeon"phase (his character comes across not unlike John Wayne's character inTHE SEARCHERS, only with the kind of sappy sentimentalism we find inmost of the Hollywood product these days), COWBOYS & ALIENS could'vebeen titled COWBOYS & INDIANS & ALIENS. Not that it matters; I'm justsaying, you know...? The storyline is by-the-numbers familiar (ain'tnothing' like some clichés to keep the cowboy fans happy), despite theintrusion of the uppity extraterrestrials. (I found it more than alittle odd that, at no point in the movie, did any of the maincharacters look around and question just who or what these eetees were. They were just some kinda flyin' varmits or airborne cattle rustlers tothese cowpokes...) While you're at it, Hollywood (and while you'reapparently itchin' to tell some supernatural western tales), why not goback to THE GHOST RIDER- the original, who was a cowboy. Giddyup.

"Cowboys & Aliens"

A spaceship arrives in Arizona, 1873, to take over the Earth, startingwith the Wild West region. A posse of cowboys and natives are all thatstand in their way.We have all had the time where we followed this movie that looksamazing, but when comes out, it keeps plagued by bad reviews. For me,personally, Cowboys & Aliens was expected to be great. First up, StevenSpielberg as a producer? Who could go wrong there? Then we have thedirector of Iron Man, which respectfully is one of the best superheromovies out there. So when I hear the premise of an old western and themodern alien war; I suspected that this movie will deliver.Surprisingly, as you all doubt, the movie was good. It containedawesome action scenes and awesome western stand-offs. Sadly, I believepeople cannot stand the idea and will put off, but I recommend that youactually see it. The acting was actually surprisingly good, who exactlycould go wrong with Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford? To add onto, themovie starts off as a spaghetti-western. It is influenced by ClintEastwood-esque and the man with no name. When the aliens arrive, withno doubt, the movie transforms into summer popcorn-film delight andonly the no-Sayers will put off. Not only, the movie's special effectsplay a prime role in the awesome action sequences; providing us withthe eye candy. I love the western feel throughout and when the aliensshine their way through, it provides for the sci-fi fans. I actuallydespise how people put this film off JUST for the premise. I don'tthink they actually understand that film isn't proving someintellectual thinking or some thought-provoking message; it providesstraight for summer Blockbuster fun, and people are missing the point. So if your a fan of westerns, I say go see it. No doubt will you besurprised at how much it is influenced by old western flicks. If yourinto sci-fi, I still say go see it. The special effects and spectacularaction sequences will leave you awe-inspired and hungry for more. Ifyou enjoy the dosage of either one; just go see it. The film has flaws, yes, but none should downright make you not want to see it. So see it.9/10.

Good acting and High profile cast don't make a good film

OK. Just watched Cowboys and Aliens. Before I say anything else, I haveseen Harrison Ford in many films. and liked most of them. The onlymistake he has made was being part of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom ofthe Crystal Skull. That was until I saw this film. Big mistake. From the start I thought the writers and producers of this film musthave either been real gutsy or real dumb to make a film about Aliensset in the 19th century Arizona. New concept. But that was for areason. Nobody wanted to make such a film. May as well have a filmcalled Aliens and Sparta! Aliens invade Ancient Greece. Sparta, Greeksand Persians join up and kick Alien butt. Just as bad an idea. There was one good to this film. The acting. Harrison Ford, DanielCraig, Olivia Wilde...great acting. Unfortunately, you could be thebest actor in the world, but you can't make a great film with a badstoryline. Will Smith = Brilliant actor..Wild Wild West = Bad Film.If you have a spare 2 hours and you love Sci-fi...like me, then youMIGHT at least enjoy the film. If not, don't bother. Definitely notworth buying.

Mixing of genres doesn't work here

First of all, I feel I should mention that I am a BIG fan of westerns, and have been so for years. And there have been plenty of sciencefiction movies I have enjoyed in the past. So it would seem that"Cowboys & Aliens" would fit my tastes. But it didn't, for severalreasons. The first problem is the sluggish pace of the enterprise. To be fair, Iwatched the extended cut on Blu-Ray, which runs about fifteen minutesmore than the theatrical version. But I think even the theatricalversion would try the patience of any viewer. The movie really neededto be more snappy, more fast-moving, which it isn't.The next problem I had was with the performances. Nobody gives a reallygood performance here. Craig and Ford don't seem to be enjoyingthemselves, or acting to their most professional capacity. They end upmaking their characters really boring. The third problem I had was with the portrayal of the aliens. They arepretty unimaginative, being mute beings that simply like to cause a lotof destruction and mayhem. What if they were smart, talkative, andcunning? I think if they had those traits, they would be a reallyinteresting foe. While not aggressively bad, the movie ends up being very mediocre andnot worth your time under practically any circumstance, even if you arefan of westerns and/or sci-fi movies.

Do Not Watch If You Are Irish-American

This movie was, very clearly, an allegory of the struggleIrish-Americans faced when immigrating from Scotland in the 1700's. Thewhite man's oppression of them is portrayed as heroism in this film, and the Irish settlers have been depicted as little more thanbrainless, gold-gorging, alien monsters. Steven Spielberg probably hasnever even come close to dealing with actual subjects like oppression, segregation, and genocide, so the fact that he'd put his name on thismovie does not come as a surprise. I normally only watch independent,thought-provoking movies, but I thought that, just this once, I woulddescend to the lower ranks of film film appreciation because I thoughtthe title of the film was very Kafka-esque. I was wrong, the movieended up being just another Hollywood hate-film packaged asindependent, art-house, genius.

Awful

This movie is so bad that even stoned out of my mind on narcotics andunable to leave the house recovering post-surgery with nothing else towatch, I still couldn't finish it. Plot less, terrible acting, awfuleffects; simply no redeeming value at all.I wanted to watch this purely on the strength of Olivia Wilde'sprevious work, especially _House_, but even she couldn't carry it. Andher acting in this production was no better than the rest of the cast.I will never understand how such an otherwise excellent cast producedthis junk.Maybe the second half is better, but I'll never find out.

A surprisingly entertaining action adventure if you get over it's deviated story

I was planning on seeing this in theaters, but my attempts failedmiserably and tried to wait months and months for the DVD release ofthis film even though I saw the mixed reception it had onRottentomatoes. All at once, I had pretty low expectations after I gotthe DVD last week on my 18th birthday. Two weeks later, when I watchedthe whole thing, my jaw dropped and became so amazed and it hadexceeded my expectations. To my surprise, this is a surprisinglyentertaining and very interesting film.Sure, the story does deviates itself from the graphic novel it wasbased on with a few questions that weren't explained during the Men andWoman quest to team up with the apache Indians to defeat and destroythe aliens and the Dialogue for this film can be pretty mediocre attimes, but I was too busy being enthralled by the action throughout theentire film. They're flawless and captivating with some very creativeones.Of course, how can I forget about the actors? Well, to my surprise, they were entertaining and a lot of fun. Especially Daniel Craig andHarrison Ford. I was like, "James Bond meets Indiana Jones? Dude, thatis so extremely radical!". Even the development with the characters isexemplary at it's best along with the romantic relationship with DanielCraig and Olivia Wilde (who also did a great job as Ella Swenson). Tothose who think that it's blend of both the Western and Science Fictiongenres was distracting are dead wrong because I happen to like it'sblend of western and science fiction that makes this film veryinteresting to watch. This movie has everything else that made this movie looked goodincluding the perfect visuals, the groundbreaking CGI effects on thealiens, the excellent make up for the alien, the extraordinary costumedesigns and sets, and the riveting music score from Harry GregsonWilliams. Even the pacing is pretty good.Although, not a masterpiece, Cowboys & Aliens is a riveting andenthralling entertaining science fiction western and action flick worthwatching for die hard fans of science fiction and western films.Rating: 8.5/10

Worth it's weight in gold!

It has been over 42 years since a "good" Weird west movie came out. Now, Paramount Picture attempts to revive the genre again. Did It work? This is my review on Cowboys and Aliens. The plot goes like this; A man wakes up in a desert without anyknowledge of of history or his identity. He also notices a metalarmband around his arm which looks like something WAY before it's time.He eventually finds a small town in Arizona entitled "Absolution".After causing chaos with the local Sheriff, he runs into a dirty,good-for-nothing Cattle owner named Colonel Dolarhyde who seems to ownthe town. But before Dolarhyde could get ahold of him, mysteriousattackers from the skies assault the town, abducting anyone who standsin their way. After the attack, Dolarhyde decides to cut a deal withthe man with no name, due to the fact that his armband is some sort ofalien weaponry. A Posse is established and they set out to find theinvaders and reclaim their family members. With a few exceptions like "True Grit" and "3:10 to Yuma", Westernsthat have come out in the 21st century have been far from Brilliantstatus of the older movies. Cowboys and Aliens seem to mix the twotogether; Assembling a classic western storyline with a modern alientwist- and it works! The story has all the stereotypical western characters that appeared inthe oldies. You've got an old drunk, the young kid that needs to learnmanners, a greedy land owner and of course, a man with no name. Thewriters did a really good job establishing some great western clichésthat seemed to be used a lot in the old movies. The characters are extremely well acted- And why wouldn't they be. Itstars great acting legends like Harrison ford and Daniel Crag. Harrisonplays brilliantly, grunting and growling like some savage beast whichthe character seems to be. Daniel is quite good to,though there isnothing out of the ordinary to talk about. Good acting in general, butdon't be going in thinking that there is going to be the best actingever- because it isn't.One factor a look at most in Sci-Fi movies is the Aliens. The aliens inthis movie are amongst the greatest of modern aliens. Im probably alonein this, but they make me feel like I'm watching an old-school alienultimatum which is very hard for modern filmmakers to achieve. Onething I like about them is their weaponry. You see a alien armband onthe Daniel Crag's character for most of the movie, but as you get tothe end they reveal a lot more. They have huge, under-arm Lazar cannonsthat explode large sections of the landscape which is quiteentertaining to watch. The aliens' motivation is nothing special but itwasn't TERRIBLE. For the appearance and weaponry, I think they deservecredit. There is a lot of action scenes to keep the action junkies happy. Aswell as the explosions mentioned before, we has huge spaceshipsblasting people, Indians stabbing aliens, Cowboys shooting aliens etc. There is A lot of battles which are extremely entertaining.Im not saying this movie is for everyone and most people will disagreewith everything i have just said, but I, on the other hand, can'tpraise it enough. It brought me back to the old school B movies. Ihighly recommend the film to fans of Sci-fi action and old B westerns.I give it a 10/10

26 April 2013

Aw shucks, I forgot how to act

COWBOYS AND ALIENS (2011, 120 minutes) reminded me of childhood in all the wrong ways. Let me begin by noting a "B" movie was the cruddy film you'd see along with a really good movie in a double feature. With the passage of time, "B" movies got worse and worse because no one wanted to see them in the first place. COWBOYS AND ALIENS is probably the consummate example of "B" film.Briefly, Daniel Craig wakes up, laying in the desert, struck with amnesia and a large bracelet. It transpires that the bracelet is alien technology and essentially the rest of the story is Craig getting his memories back - and they are supposed to be spooky, I guess. Needles to say, this involves lots of creepy extraterrestrials who are after earth's gold. The rest of the great cast is a total waste and completely pointless. Harrison Ford is a grouchy old bastard who still carries the futility of the Civil War on his shoulders; Clancy Brown is magnificent as a rough-and-tumble preacher. If you expect me to praise or even name the rest of the cast, forget about it. The whole thing may have been a fun exercise in filmmaking, but it was stupid. These kinds of things have no value outside the cinematic effects discipline. At times humorous and at times ridiculous homage (to Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (Special Edition), War of the Worlds (Widescreen Edition), Independence Day (Single Disc Widescreen Edition)), this film just isn't really anything. I can say there is a great deal of CGI action, it is an "alien" movie, it's a pathetic excuse for a Western - it is clearly Spielberg and a few others trying to resurrect the long-dead salad days.Which reminds me: I thought Spielberg was "retired". This film will show you why he should be. And that, my fellow film-lovers, is just sad.Two stars; one for the actors, one for the effects.
