The best show you haven't seen!!!

A story about a chemistry teacher who learns that he has lung cancerand to support his family starts preparing the drug meth from which hehopes to earn enough money.Breaking Bad has everything going for it whether its the direction orthe acting or writing. This is one of the few shows which provides sucha detailed character arc of all the leads. What this show does well isblend dark humor with suspense with (occasional)action with detailedcharacter sketches. This show is all about the details, its amazing howwell the script is thought out(many scenes resort to metaphors).Themoral dilemmas which each character faces in many situations throughoutthe 4 seasons are quite intense. Many complain that this show is slowbut its this slow pace which helps to build the tension. If we didn'tcare about the characters then why would we care about what happensnext in their life and in order for us to care about the characters weneed to understand them and their mindset and that is only possible ifthe show has a slow pace in which each actor has time to showcase theircharacter. In season 1 walter white is this reserved chemistry teacherwho loves his family and seems like a person who wont even hurt a flybut as the seasons progress he truly breaks bad and his evil side islet loose. The marvelous thing about the show is that the supportingcast is brilliant, they are not just random people who are penned downon the script just to accompany walter white in his story but they arewell thought out characters who affect the whole story. The acting in this show is the best you will ever see. Bryan Cranstonand Aaron Paul are currently my 2 most favorite people in thisworld. They live the characters and give their characters life.Their aremany tense moments in this show where the characters are in a difficultsituations and they have to get out of them and these situations arereally thrilling ,but what i find more thrilling is when the characterhas 2 choices to make and in most cases one choice is good and onechoice is evil and the way the whole scenario and the moral dilemma isshowcased really makes you just want to stand up and clap.I truly recommend this show cause this show will absorb you into itsMETH world. This show might just be the best show you haven't seen!!!!!

Well made show, but there is much that bothers me.

When this show first appeared I liked it very much. However, as timewent on I found it less and less attractive because of its violence, which I found excessive. In fact I stopped watching somewhere in themiddle of the second season.I decided to give it another try for the third season. I am againstruck by the good quality of the acting, and I enjoy its being set inAlbuquerque, I city that I have spent some time in.HOWEVER. The violence is still excessive. I also find, that with theexception of Walt Jr., there is no character that I find even remotelyappealing. Of course, the "law breakers" are uniformly bad and vicious, but so are the law enforcers, with Hank bordering on homicidal. Walt'swife is a singularly unpleasant woman and her sister is no better. If the program offers any lesson it is that our drug laws produce muchmore harm than the drugs.

Refreshingly different, and great!

This show is a mystery to me. I finished season 1 a few minutes agowhich I had started a few days back. I don't really dig "Drama" genrethat well unless it has something extraordinary to add to it, much lessthe real-life day-to-day stuff. This show, somehow, falls into thatcategory for me. But there is something about it that makes me go backto it again and again. Bryan Cranston makes you feel sorry for him, embarrassed for him, feel his insecurity, feel his stupidity, feel hisdetermination, watch him in awe and be blown over every once in awhile. Aaron Paul, from what I've seen, is just fantastic, bestcharacter apart from Bryan. This guy really pulls off the irony and theassociated comedy really well. A very different and fresh show. Have awatch. Good chance you'd like it. Pretty sure you never thought aboutChemistry this way. Cheers!

Hands down, best TV show ever made

Where do i start with Breaking Bad?! It's flawless, top notch acting? It's amazing cinematography? It's highly original plot? Breaking Bad isstill the only TV show to leave me wanting more after every episode andin my opinion, ranks up there with the greatest TV shows ever made.(This review will not go into detail about the plot) Let's start withthe acting. Bryan Cranston is simply amazing in Breaking Bad. I didn'tthink much of him at first, seeing him in Malcom In The Middle growingup. Cranston fully understands the character of Walter White as i haveseen from many interviews with him about Breaking Bad. He steps intoWalt's shoes and no one could portray this character better than him.His gradual descent into _____ (won't spoil anything) is something ihave never seen before in film as well as TV (He also won 3 Emmy's forthe role). The rest of the cast in Breaking Bad is amazing as well(Anna Gunn, Aaron Paul, Dean Norris, Betsy Brandht, RJ Mitte, BobOdenkirk, Giancarlo Esposito, Steven Michael Quezada and JonathanBanks)Breaking Bad has to be one of the most suspenseful shows ever made. Each season gets more and more tense, building up more and moresuspense leading explosive cliff-hangers and scenes leaving you on theedge of your seat (especially in seasons 3 and 4). Films classed as'Suspense-Thrillers' have nothing on Breaking Bad which is classed as adrama.I recommend Breaking Bad to everyone interested in an original, suspenseful and superbly made drama show. 10/10 :)

Fantastic and out of this world!!!

I've seen many television shows, and almost of every worth while movieever produced. In my opinion this is on of my top five favorite ineither category. The story is captivating and will grip your attentionthroughout every minute(you won't be getting up for a drink). Myfavorite aspect of the series would have to be the acting witch isincredible. Bryan Cranston is phenomenal, and portrays his character tothe letter. With the perfect combination of action, drama, and materialthats makes you think this is by far one of the best television seriesto ever hit the air waves joining the likes of "The Sopranos" "OZ" "TheWire" and in my opinion "Dexter" witch is another superb series. What Ifind most incredible about it is they are able to create such afantastic experience on cable T.V. without the freedoms of HBO andSHOWTIME. GREATTTTTT SHOW. WATCH IT!!!!!!

Without a doubt. . .

The very best program on TV. This is the first time I have ever felt itnecessary to write a review for anything on IMDb. I think that it'ssafe to say that I was ecstatic with the first episode of the newseason after the end of the writer's strike. I hadn't given my hopes upuntil I saw the second season and some continuity despite the strike,my hopes wouldn't have been given up in vain. The key to making watchable entertainment is with good writing but thekey to making GREAT entertainment is to design characters the audiencecan relate to no matter how morally ambiguous his actions. Breaking Badnot only does this in dramatic and broad sweeping fashion but with thequality and attention to detail normally reserved for doctoraldissertations. This is certainly Mr. Gilligan's opus.In Walter White (Bryan Cranston) we find an educated and reserved heroforced into a roller coaster of self-discovery in which the very coretenants of our western traditions in life, morality and human rightsare not only touched upon but exhumed, aerated and criticallydeconstructed. Why, when, how, and for how long? What are the limits ofour humanity? For what would we be so compelled as to take the life ofa stranger? In Walter White we see exemplified, the most timid of soulwe would think least likely to violate the rules of society that bindus. On top of this delving into the deepest of the shell that is man, weadd great acting, striking reality and masterful writing. I love aconcrete story without loose ends, this show pays off. This show, for me, is truly compelling in that I'm compelled to watchevery new episode, a first.

Wonderful and revelatory entertainment

Cranston became my favourite comedy actor in Malcolm in the Middle, histiming is impeccable and his physicality brought a freshness to hisperformance. In Breaking Bad he proves that he is not limited in anyway to comedy. Supported by a great cast of more than competent actors(with a special mention for Aaron Paul) Cranston is riveting as aterminally ill chemistry teacher who turns to the dark side to providefor his soon-to-be bereaved family. There are elements of comedy inBreaking Bad-very,very black comedy but comedy nonetheless and that toostrikes just the right note in the writing and performances. Not onebit of this story would work if any of the writing, direction or actingwas wrong. Everything is spot on. The characters are not written orplayed as stereotypes and the script is tight and drives the storyalong. The whole enterprise is about as absorbing as drama can be andone cannot wait to see what happens from one episode to the next- andwhat happens is never predictable. As for the people who throw up theirhands in horror and say that a programme like this glorifies drugdealing and drug use, then watch the damn thing!! If ever a programmeshows what drugs do to people then BB does. A real cautionary tale.I am into series 2 now and hope that the standard continues in thethird series. A terrific example of what can be done with TV drama whenplaying it safe is off the agenda.

Shaping up to be an all time great

Breaking Bad is simply brilliant, there is no other way to describethis show. It is the best acted show currently on TV and maybeall-time. There are not enough words to describe Bryan Cranston'sportrayal of Walter White. His 3 emmy's speak for itself. Just like VicMackey on The Shield, the protagonist is becoming the antagonist butyou continue to root for the guy. Aaron Paul has been unbelievable ashis side kick Jesse and in my opinion gave a better performance duringthe ground breaking 3rd season. The concept and plot may initially turnyou off but if you enjoyed The Wire, Sopranos, Mad Men, or The Shieldthen I guarantee you will enjoy this show. It may not be at The Wireand The Soprano's level yet, but one more season of greatness will putit right in the pantheon of dramas.

Bad

The message that the average Joe, when he's forced to make decisions, should just take the low road is Bad. You need money, your job sucks, your life is out of control - you've got two choices: stay where youare or deal meth. You can also pimp yourself middle America or you candeal weed. You can do all these things and feel redemption somehow. This isn't how real life works and it's Bad. Will Hollywood write thescript about the guy who rises above it all by becoming a legitimateentrepreneur? Doubtful. For now, they'll stick with the detective whokills or the teacher who pimps, all to convince you this is all thereis and that it's Good. No really, it's all Bad.

ollieoxen27 24 April 2012

Trash parading as moral ambiguity

I get it. A disrespected teacher with cancer decides to be a drugmanufacturer to help his family after he passes. There must be somegood in him - who are we to judge? After all his wife works for a taxcheat, his brother in law is abusive to Mexicans, and his son isdisrespectful.Trouble with moral ambiguity is it ultimately excuses all behavior. Thepeople who make this program live in Hollywood so obviously they usedrugs, know a lot about drugs, and know others involved in it. Afterall they're cool and it's a good way to make money by creating aprogram that helps amoral people feel better about themselves justbecause they snort a little, or cheat a little. The question I'd like to ask is whether the makers of this program -the actors, producers, sponsors, and indirectly the viewers would likethis program if it meant hit men with guns and axes would stalk theirfamilies and kill their family members?I didn't think so. The moral - don't exploit tragedy just because it'scool, it makes money, and it makes amoral people feel better aboutthemselves. If you're not part of the solution you are part of theproblem.

Cranston amazes with a complicated, realistic, tragic character

I'll start off this review by saying that I quite frankly, don't watcha whole lot of T.V. I've watched some shows, namely E.R, The Office, 30Rock, and when I can rent them on DVD I find a good HBO series a goodwatch. That being said, this is the best T.V series I have watched. Itfeels almost like a friend, and Walter White is a character that I wishhe was real so I could smack him out of the path he is going down.Bryan Cranston is the heart of this show, and his Emmy award was wellearned. (for a snapshot, watch the family meeting on Episode 5-GrayMatter, some of the best acting I've personally had the pleasure ofwatching) He plays Walter White, a nerdy, withdrawn, depressed 50 yearold overqualified High School chemistry teacher who's only real passionseems to show when he is talking science in the classroom. Walt justbasically seems to amble on through an incredibly average middle classexistence (Average except for his controlling wife and Cerebal-Palsystricken son). He is disrespected by his students, his boss at hissecond job, and belittled and made fun of by his boisterous brother inlaw Hank. Walt is the ordinary, everyman hero. He struggles to makeends meet, and looks back at the past with a "what if" mentality. He isat first a sweet, lovable guy you just want to give a hug too, but hechanges in disturbing ways as he "breaks bad" Everything changes forWalt when he is given a devastating diagnosis, stage 3A lung cancer, and at best two years to live. This seems to throw Walt into a deeperdepression (a scene where he sits at his pool throwing matches in comesto mind) but what it really does, is wake him up. He proceeds to teamwith a former student (played by Aaron Paul) Jesse Pinkmann, who isalso a complicated character, much more so then at first glance. Tocook crystal meth, for the simple purpose of making sure his family istaken care of when he dies. The relationship between Jesse and"Mr.White" as he calls him is an interesting one, it is a combinationof an odd couple and a father-son thing. The two actors workbrilliantly off each other in the scenes the two share, and give somememorable lines.Cranston plays this character masterfully, he completely becomes thecharacter, from his beige, bland wardrobe, to the way Cranston usesevery aspect of his being, his facial gestures, his eyes, his hands, and last but not least, his speech to convey his characters anguish, depression, regret, but also his huge heart and "working class hero"kind of life. Walt is in my opinion very identifiable for most of us,and very likable, but his decisions aren't, and there lies the mainconflict in the show. It is a conflict in the viewer, a caring for thecharacter after seeing what he was, and hope that he doesn'tfundamentally change the good man that he was in his quest to in manyways "Break Even" with life

wow what a series,worth watching

First three seasons were awesome,Bryan Cranston did justice to hischaracter Walter white.Only point I dint like is skyler's relationshipwith ted(even though it was for short duration)apart from this allthree seasons are great. chemistry lecturer cooking meth to make moneyvery interesting. But I think fourth season is going out of track.....but I am waiting for what would be the end as gus and walter are tryingto terminate each other, also hank behind gus which would put walter infront of hanks gun.trust me give a try

Hot Show, Hot Cast

This is a great show. First of all the look of the show is justabsolutely outstanding. It has this greenish-yellow tint to it thatmakes the desert scenes all the more gritty and hot. You can reallyfeel the heat from those scenes. The acting is without questionmovie-quality. In fact, the whole show has this movie feel that canonly be described as a mini-movie for TV (not a TV movie though). Ilove the fact the show perpetuates drama in the most ordinarycircumstances. Only The Sopranos came close to the balance thatBreaking Bad has with its story lines. Altogether, Breaking Bad is thenext greatest thing to Meth!

Love this show!

For over a year, I had a chance to watch this show on Comcast ONDEMAND. I watched the first episode of season two a couple of times, but never got past the first five or so minutes.Out of boredom, I finally got past the first few minutes and to behonest, I was blown away! The acting is first rate and the plot hasmore twists and turns that a roller coaster at Six Flags.I bought all of season on on Itunes to complete my knowledge of theshow and then season 3 started.Last night I just watched the next to last season 3 episode. After afew shows that seemed the season was just dragging to a close, thefinal 10 seconds had me jumping to my feet screaming "Oh my God!".Now I can't wait for the season finale to come, and yet I will hate forthe season to finish and wait another 8 or so months for season 4 tostart. All in all, one of the best dramas I have ever seen. I know this showcan't last forever, but it ranks right up there with the best of thesecable TV series that last 10 to 13 episodes. Funny, serious, outrageous, sometimes stupid....but hey, its a fantasy right.

TV at a new level

Breaking Bad has two significant problems: first, it makes everythingelse on TV look pale or silly in comparison; second, it's only on TVonce a week (and only for a few months a year).Simply put, Breaking Bad is the best serialized drama in the history oftelevision. There is nothing to fault. The acting, thecharacterizations, the plots, everything is absolutely top-notch. Andeach week ends with a cliff-hanger that makes you wish it were nextweek already so you can see the next episode. I didn't know a showcould be so effective for so long. Season 1 is incredible; season 2 isat least as good; and season 3 is the best season of any show evermade. Now that season 3 is over, life will not be quite right untilseason 4 begins. The good news: there WILL be a season 4. The bad news:it won't begin until July 2011.If you haven't seen this series, buy or rent the discs and watch it inorder. But don't go too fast or you'll run out of episodes beforeseason 4 starts.

MartinRiggs45 13 April 2012

Still gets me horny after all these years.

The show focuses on Walter White a guy who could afford a much nicercar than the one he drives. He could afford this because he's asuccessful drug manufacturer. At first he begins this dangerous careerto make money to pay for cancer treatment. However somewhere along theway the writers began to lean away from the whole cancer issue. Itseems to have disappeared as cases of terminal cancer so often do inreality. Along with the less than desirable vehicle Walt drives is hisless than desirable harlot of a wife Skylar. This dried out old box hasbrought Walter down from one high after another during the course ofthis unfortunate program. Walt's one friend seems to be a meth addleddegenerate wigger named Jesse. In short we have the tale of a guy withway too much money to have such a whore of a wife and a retarded bestfriend. Bob Odenkirk is awesome in this.

Some Fools just don't get Breaking Bad!!

Some of the idiots who are rating Breaking Bad poorly and knocking itfor stereotyping and poorly developed characters are just that..idiots.It is TV!!!! Of course most of it would probably NOT happen as it doeson the show but when you are condensing LIFE into a 1 hour segment fortelevision, it often WILL seem stereotypical! Yes, the lead characterand his partner escape death too many times to believe and yes, some ofthe BAD guys seem to far-fetched(the 2 Mexican Hit-man) to believe butthe show WORKS on so many levels if you approach it with a open mindand are WILLING to suspend some truths. I love the show and think thatother than a couple of "writer's liberties" the show is dead on andvery very entertaining! If you need absolute truth(all you who knockthe show) go read some Dali lama books!!

KissMyAss31193 05 April 2012

Best TV-Show ever?

My guess is yes definitely. It's a brilliant piece of art, nasty andextremely shocking. I watched the first Season and I thought, yeahwell, it's awesome, but I think Dexter is still better. Then I watchedthe second Season and was like, alright then, but I think the secondSeason of Dex was still a bit better. But then with the third Seasonand thing became sure. This Show is better than Dexter. Beter thanevery Series I've ever seen. But finally after thinking it can't getmore thrilling, the fourth Season came along and blew my mind in everyEpisode. These perfectly worked out Characters this visual brilliance, this extremely convincing story. The way this writers made you love andhate all the Characters at the same time. And of course, theunbelievable shocking events of the final Episode of Season IV thatblew my mind and left me in a numb mood that least for hours. Amazing,f***ing Amazing!

alexruthrauff 01 April 2012

It's good, but...

I'm in the middle of Season 2 right now and I've had major issues withhow sloppy this show can be sometimes. Witness: 1. Jesse is busted bythe DEA and then released when they apparently have nothing on him. Butwait--the DEA SHOWS HIM that they've found his duffel bag full ofmoney, which was in his car, which was with Tuco when he was shot.Jesse says it isn't his, obviously... but his prints would be all overit (first thing they'd check), and I'm no lawyer but it seems that asack full of money with your prints all over it found next to a deaddrug kingpin would be PLENTY of evidence to charge you with a seriouscrime. But no, there's no indication that they finger printed themoney, and Jesse's let go. NOPE, not buying it.2. When Jesse tries to cook meth using Walt's recipe, he doesn't get itexactly right--the stuff he makes is very good, but not great, so whatdoes he do but THROW IT OUT IN THE DESERT. Again, the stuff he makes onhis own is excellent, he's got no other income, but instead of sellingit and working on the formula he just repeatedly tosses it out. We'resupposed to believe that this broke meth head has suddenly become asobsessed with perfection as a German luxury car engineer? 3. Let's rundown the list of reasons Hank should suspect Walt of being involvedwith meth. Chemistry equipment used to make meth is known to be missingfrom the lab Walt supervises... There is apparently a new expertchemist manufacturing meth in the area... Walt is a known associate ofJesse, whose car was found next to a dead meth kingpin... Walt wentmissing at exactly the same time Hank raided a meth distributor'shideout... Walt is known to have cancer and faces an uncertainfinancial future... Walt is missing for hours at a time without a goodexplanation... COME ON. We're supposed to believe that thishigh-ranking DEA agent hasn't had the thought cross his mind once?Sorry, not buying it.It's a great show for a lot of reasons, but sloppy stuff like thismeans it can't measure up to shows like the Sopranos or the Wire, whichare meticulously detailed and eminently plausible. That's my two cents.

aerovian 01 April 2012

Completely unpredictable

I'm in my fifties and have watched enough television programs andmovies that nearly every fictional story I see is repetitively andtransparently predictable. I know how it's going to turn out before thehalfway point, because Hollywood just keeps regurgitating the samestory lines and scripts ad nauseam. But when I watch Breaking Bad, Ifind virtually ZERO predictability. I am completely locked-in throughevery episode because the plot always manages to deviate from theexpected. And yet it does so, for the most part, without seriouslychallenging rational beliefs. I think this show is an absolutemasterpiece, and the kind of gem that is too rarely encountered in thegarbage-filled thousand-channel morass that is television today.Breaking Bad should be considered the absolute benchmark for serialdramatic programming.
