Just got a chance to see The Devil's Double.

Just got a chance to see The Devil's Double, great movie! As the firstof it's kind I think that they did well, being Iraqi myself ( I left inthe early 90's) I find it quite accurate, I can tell it wasn't actuallyfilmed in Baghdad but then who really wants to go there!?  For so longI've listened to critics here in the US saying the movie is too flashyor over the top but I lived in Baghdad during that time, believe me wewere more O.T.T than that! Iraq in the '80's had everything you couldwant, night clubs, bars, the best hotels in the world, Sheraton, LeMeridien etc, think of Dubai now, that was Baghdad then.  Anyway, I wasan officer in a special unit in the palace. So I saw a lot of stuff, itwas an open secret that Uday had a double, just like President SaddamHussein. It makes me laugh when there's controversy after 20 yearsabout whether Latif Yahia's story is true or not, I wonder who they'reasking for an opinion, some guy who left Iraq when he was three and hasnever been to the middle-east let alone Iraq! Or worse still the menwho Uday used to call 'friends',  it's of no importance really, Iraq aswe knew it is gone, President Saddam is dead.  Watch and enjoy, historically accurate or not it's one hell of a ride! Oh yeah, ifyou've ever watched any interview of the real Latif Yahia, that's whatUday sounded like, not as squeaky as they make him out to be in themovie. To capture Uday's brutality they would have had to dial it up anotch or twelve, I had the displeasure of seeing him in action inreality. We had a job to do, pretending we weren't there.   Does itglorify Uday, I don't know, I think that's for each person to decide.Am I proud of Latif Yahia for bringing his story to the world, absolutely. Because for each person that tries to rubbish him there aretwenty Iraqis who will defend him, he stood up against the regime andin the end he's the winner.

Cooper shines in amazing dual performances!

'THE DEVIL'S DOUBLE': Three and a Half Stars (Out of Five) A brutally violent biopic based on a book written by a man, named LatifYahia, who claims to have been a body double for Saddam Hussein's son,Uday. Dominic Cooper stars impressively in the dual lead roles (asLatif and Uday). The film was directed by Lee Tamahori (who's most wellknown for directing B action films like 'DIE ANOTHER DAY', 'NEXT' and'XXX: STATE OF THE UNION') and written by Michael Thomas. There hasbeen a lot of criticism of the film (as well as the book) for beingmore fiction than fact but the filmmakers have admitted that a lot ofthe film's details have been fabricated. Regardless the film isentertaining as well as very interesting.Latif is introduced as an army lieutenant called in to Sadam's palacein Baghdad at the request of Uday. Once there Uday gives Latif theultimatum that he either commit to living at the palace with him and behis body double or have his family killed by Sadam's soldiers. Latifreluctantly agrees and is quickly drawn in to a world of madness. Udayis sadistic and insane and takes whatever he wants, much to theembarrassment of his father. Latif is an honorable soldier dedicated todefending Iraq, but not at this cost, and he is constantly torn withwhat he must do.The movie is very hard to watch at times; it's filled with torture, rape and sadistic madness at times. It's also very interesting andcompelling, if not believable though. Tamahori does an impressive jobdirecting, especially considering his previous film efforts, and thescript is well written but it's Cooper that steals the show! Coopermakes the movie with his amazing dual performances and gives the filmjust the right amount of madness and humanity it needs. Without him themovie probably wouldn't have been nearly as memorable. It has it'sflaws and is not for the squeamish but the movie is worth a watch formost.Watch our movie review show 'MOVIE TALK' at:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rje99p8QSz8

Despicable Me

Greetings again from the darkness. The psychotic, sadistic son of SaddamHussein is the subject of this film from director Lee Tamahori.Tamahori has a history of colorful films with terrific visuals that aresomewhat lacking in substance. This latest film falls right in line, although it had much potential. The key reason to see this one is the explosive performance(s) ofDominic Cooper. He plays two characters who happen to look identical, but are polar opposites in thought and morals. As Latif Yahia, Cooperplays a genuinely nice citizen of Iraq who gets forced into the role of"fiday" or body double for Saddam's evil son Uday. For lack of a betterdescription, Uday is psychotic and thrills only at abuse of power. Thisis not political corruption per se, because Uday has very little rolein the Saddam government. But it is the most frightening example ofabsolute power corrupted. This has to be an actor's dream come true ... playing two suchdifferent characters, one of which requires your actions to go over thetop. Cooper is best known for his much different roles in Mamma Mia andAn Education. His performance ranks with Al Pacino in Scarface andVincent Cassel in Mesrine. The movie is very difficult to watch becauseof the actions of this guy, but Cooper's performance makes itworthwhile. The support work is provided by Ludivine Sagnier (Swimming Pool) asUday's lover, who also risks her life by getting cozy with Latif. I amreally not sure about this character and although I am a fan ofSagnier, this story line seemed to take away from the battle of witsbetween Uday and Latif. Combine that with the movie being about 10-15minutes too long, and I believe the script could have been tightened upresulting in an improved movie.

Great movie, incredible script and Dominic's crown jewel

The film, centered on the story of a simple man entering the lewduniverse of Hussein's era of corruption. My favorite thing about thefilm is the unlikeness to the autocratic Muslim country often portrayedin movies, that many people will find in the constant drugging, sex,and very little if no references to God. Dominic's acting really filledthe picture there, the only thing that approaching the two charactersis the stunning physical similarity, Uday and Latif are two verydifferent people, the first being completely psychotic and the second adevoted son. The only thing keeping me from awarding a perfect scoretwo the films is the lack of acting in the female lead, Sarrab'scharacter having a positively bipolar behavior and the somewhat unevenstyle of directing. Otherwise a very good movie.

"You forget, I died the day I came here."

The title of the picture conjures up a mental picture of a horror filmdealing with a Satanic cult of devil worshipers. I'm not sure if theactual product might have come up with something even worse. This storyof Uday Hussein, elder son of the Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, is oneof unbridled lust for power, glory and sex that's almost too over thetop to be true, and yet is probably pretty close to the truth. Theamazing thing about the picture that I found out afterwards is that theparts of Uday and his body double Latif Yahia were portrayed by thesame actor, Dominic Cooper. Individually, either one of hisperformances here would have been considered quite exceptional; bothtogether in the same picture I would consider worthy of some type ofachievement award. What made his appearance in the film particularlyfascinating to me is that I know of someone who looks exactly like theLatif character, and it kept me distracted for a considerable portionof the picture.More than anything in the movie, I was struck by the severelymegalomaniacal temperament of Uday Hussein. Here's a person who had noother justification to do the things he did than being born into aparticular family, that of a dictator who ruled his country with a fistof iron. Can you imagine this guy running Iraq if something happened toSaddam before he was eventually captured and tried for his war crimes? As much as I don't want to believe that individuals can sink to thiskind of depravity, my better judgment tells me that this is the kind ofevil that has to be confronted and defeated whenever the opportunitypresents itself. This isn't the kind of film that winds up being recommended assomething to watch based on it's cinematic merit. Even with libertiesthat might have been taken with the telling of it's story, "The Devil'sDouble" is a film that instructs and lays bare the kind of evil thatexists in the world today. I can't imagine how the real life LatifYahia must live each day today thankful in the knowledge that a devillike Uday Hussein eventually got exactly what he deserved for the kindof depraved individual he was.

Quite a good movie

Well, why "only" seven stars? It's pure statistic average. On one sidewe have excellent performances by the actors (especially Mr. Cooper inboth main roles) and other craftsmen and women involved in theproduction, and on the other side there are some holes in the plot(possibly filmed but did not make it for the final version) which wouldput all the pieces together (undefined Saddam's character, Uday'srelationship with his mother, Sarrab's hidden motifs, Muslims andalcohol & music, and so on) and make sense. Of course, that way themovie would be significantly longer but it's nevertheless extremelyinteresting and no one would be bored. There are still many layersmissing. I've been really surprised with the quality of the workinvolved and enjoyed this movie, and so will you. Take the blue-rayversion.

Certainly not a 1 star film

This film, although admittedly not a masterpiece, is not a 1 star filmeither. This film has many redeeming features and I personally found it veryenjoyable. In fact it's quite similar to Dorian Gray but loads betterand nowhere near as monotonous. How a certain reviewer , who althoughhas his own other personal opinions which I really respect, gave thisfilm just 1 star out of 10 I do not know. One just has to watch thetrailer to find out. Trust me, it deserves much more than that mark.Overall this is a great film and for me it lived up to my expectations.Despite some minor flaws I left rather satisfied at the end, certainlysomething 1 star films are not capable of doing. It's after all how a film should be, rather enjoyable.

Great Movie

The Devil's DoubleWhen I first heard of this movie, I was quite interested. In fact, Ihad seen the trailer every time. Many people are familiar with Saddamand his cruelty but this Movie shows Uday Hussein's menace which isless looked upon. The time period is during/after the Gulf war in 1991but focused a little before when Iran-Iraq had a war.A look alike man by the name of Latif Yahya becomes Uday Hussein's bodydouble and faces a life cruelty. The Pluses: Great Scenery, The acting of Dominic Cooper and his role(he looked authentically Arab)The action, and they show various warclips of Iraq which is helpful to some. The dude who played SaddamHussain actually looked liked him. The girls were great, especially thegirl who played the Concubine, SarrabThe Minuses: This is an R-rated flick so expect a lot of violence, cussing sex and nudity especially towards the end.Overall, The Devil's Double is a great Fictional film, notice I saidfictional as some events are taken out of proportion. i give this an8/10

Cinema Gold! Just look at the poster!

The Devil's Double starring Dominic Cooper in a Bravura performance, playing both leads, he is astounding. Never for a moment do you thinkhe is the same person, prosthetics and camera work aside he draws twovery distinctive character's and then a third as he portrays the doubleimitating the Devil! Incredible! In case you have been holed upsomewhere and know nothing of the story behind the movie, here goes.Latif Yahia (Cooper) is an Iraqi army officer taken from the front lineduring the Iran-Iraq war, he is brought to one of the palaces inBaghdad to meet an old schoolmate Uday Hussein (also Cooper) son of thepresident Saddam Hussein. In those times of war and uprising Uday needsa 'fidai' or bullet catcher, someone who he can send in when there is athreat to his safety or if he just doesn't feel like doing it himself. Uday offers Latif the job, but Latif declines politely and I won'tspoil the rest. Based on the true story of Latif Yahia and his bestselling book of the same name, the Devil's Double sticks pretty muchwith the book apart from some scenes where Lee Tamahori the directortook some poetic license. Don't expect it to be hugely political, it'snot. Don't expect it to be historically accurate either, it's kindathere but the producers and director have said that they purposelydidn't go down that road because they didn't want historians nitpicking. Maybe they should have because from other reviews I have seenthey're nit picking anyway! The Devil's Double is a great action packedthriller of a movie with fantastic performances from not one but twoactors playing 'Doubles' Philip Quast (Saddam Hussein) also playsSaddam's Double Faoz Al-Emiri ( I think I got that right) and althoughyou don't see too much of him you know instantly who he is when he's onscreen! I liked it, a lot actually and I will be seeing it again andprobably again, for all the controversy that has been kicked up I thinkit's going to be one of those movies that has lasting power and gainsmore and more credit as time goes on. Remember 'Scarface' wasn't such abig hit when it came out first, it was only over time that it garneredthe Iconic status that it has now. Watch it, make up your own mind, theprice of the ticket won't break the bank and you won't have to take outa second mortgage! But in Entertainment value it's cinema gold! Justlook at the poster! 10/10 **********

Movie made me go searching for the whole Real Story!! DO WATCH IT...

Since there has already been a fabulous review covering all the aspectsof movie-making and socio-political altercations inside and outside themovie, thereby being caused it, in my own version I would like to sharea more real picture. This movie brings out the best of the Uday Hussein's neurotic andridiculous behavior. Deeply moved after watching it, I had to gothrough a whole lot of material and videos to know the real storybehind it. Interviews of Latif himself, after which I wouldn't exactlycall him a hero in real life. A gradual transformation and a stamp ofUday's personality has left him limping mentally till date. He now, hates Iraq and interestingly the last part of him making anassassination attempt, although plausible could not be verified. Thisis not an action-paced movie but more of an attempt or rather going tooharsh a kind of justification of Iraq's regime change, although Saddamhas been shown in a neutral light. Final Verdict: Not Exactly a historical master-piece but then againincites you to go deeper in search of this question's answer, "Whathappened after the timeline shown in the movie and how much do Iactually believe?" Serves it's purpose damn right.Do take out time and watch some interviews and documentaries. I changemy view--> History is interesting!!

Hollywood style gangster epic set in Iraq

After the 1991 Iraqi conflict, stories of the atrocities perpetuated bythe country's then 'president' Saddam Hussein were sadly all toocommonplace. But Hussein's son, Uday, almost became as famous as hisfather when stories would leak out about him: his penchant for younggirls, his love of torture and his starving hounds who he kept onstandby to occasionally tear apart and eat any woman who dared turndown his "charms". Through all this, apparently, he had a double whowitnessed the whole thing and it's his story that's detailed here inThe Devil's Double.Loosely based on the book by Latif Yahia – the alleged double – who, let's be honest, looks nothing like Uday Hussein, despite his claims tohave had surgery, The Devil's Double tells the story of howhardworking, honest Latif is forced before Uday, the son of Saddam witha simple request: be his double, his 'brother' as Uday prefers to putit. Since Latif is presumed dead, having fought in the Iran/Iraq war,he's told he has nothing to lose but much to gain by accepting. However, Latif still refuses and is basically tortured and beaten intosubmission. What follows then is the story of Uday Hussein, told thepoint of view of his double, who witnesses from the sidelines thegradual descent of the always unstable Uday into fully fledged, certified coke head crackpot. One could imagine the early production meetings and director LeeTamahori going "I'm going to make a movie set in 80s Iraq but it willbe about the rise and fall of an 80s criminal!" He's clearly aware ofthe doubts about Yahia's veracity and seems quite content to make whatis essentially an Arabic gangster thriller. If you want proof of this, the '91 Gulf war only gets a passing reference and it's literally that:a passing reference. Forget about politics. The movie has other thingsto deal with, the least of which is Uday Hussein's very mixed andcolorful sex life: he liked women and men – especially transvestites. There's even a short scene that hints at an incestuous affair with hismother. You can forget politics when you've got this salacious stuffgoing on.Malta, standing in for Iraq, is a very convincing location. It feelslike Iraq, it has the right atmosphere, desert vistas and architecture. The buildings are suitably luxurious and opulent. In fact, thepresentation of Iraq here can't be faulted… until, that is, the momentyou see all the distinctly western women populating the palaces andnightclubs. Look, we know Iraq won't be safe to shoot in for maybe over a decade, but really, they could have made a bit more effort here. For a moviesupposedly set in Iraq, all the women look either European or American.Could they not get any Arabic women? One look at Ludivine Sagnier, ascapable as she is, and it almost becomes farcical. She's so clearly notfrom Iraq, you're almost reminded of the olden days when an actresswould simply don a dark wig to play lady from – any – foreign country. It's very lazy casting and serves to only sink the verisimilitude theyhad achieved up to this. Director Tamahori must really have trusted his actor. The notion of oneactor playing both roles could have been a laughable disaster.Different actors could probably have played them and you would havegotten the same effect, but Cooper manages pulls of it offeffortlessly. However Dominic Cooper's rendition of Uday Hussein isn'tscary; over the top, yes, but scary, no. Instead, he plays it with aslightly comical edge that makes Uday Hussein more camp than anythingelse. So much so if fact he really wouldn't be out of place in anAustin Powers movie. It's an energetic performance for sure, though notas edgy as you would have liked. In addition to the lack of Arabic actresses, there is also anotherproblem that tends to undersell the entire enterprise: too much of theaction takes place in nightclubs. The location sheet for the shoot musthave surely read like this: palace, nightclub, desert, nightclub, swimming pool, night club… etc., because the amount of nightclub scenesin this movie is over the top and not necessarily in a good way. Onceagain, you realize Lee Tamahori's debt to a certain gangster moviedirected by Brian De Palma in 1983.So how much, if any, of this is real? That's anyone's guess. There's noquestion Uday Hussein was a very disturbed psychopathic individual whowas capable of pretty much anything imaginable, but how much of hisstory recounted through the eyes of his so-called double can be reliedupon? For all we know Latif Yahia could be a Walter Mitty type who madeup the entire tale. But whatever the truth, as a movie, The Devil'sDouble is not perfect by any means. But it's worth watching for theconvincingly unhinged performance by Dominic Cooper.

Melina Gunnett 01 May 2012

Worth seeing, but you can wait for the video.

This is the story of Latif Yahia during the period of his life when hewas forced to play body double for Uday Hussein. The extreme power, wealth and privilege of the Hussein family stands against the backdropof a war they started (the Gulf War between Iraq and Kuwait). At it'sheart this film is about the fear generated by one powerful, violentand insane man and how people learn to live with him.Dominic Cooper played both of the lead roles, Uday Hussein and LatifYahia, and was amazing. His performance was so exceptional that it mademe really, really want to like this movie. Unfortunately, Copper'sperformance aside, the best I can say was not bad.The film starts out with a montage of real life war clips from the GulfWar, interspersed with clips of Latif being taken to see Uday. Sadly,it then jumps straight into him being forced to work for Uday as hisdouble. It didn't give much of a build up or give me much of a reasonto care about Latif beyond him being a fellow human in a bad situation.Uday is excessive in every way. Drugs, sex and violence are the norm inhis life and he leaves a tail of damaged people and bodies wherever hegoes. Most of the sex and violence in the movie is to portray thisextreme but the viewer should be warned that there is a lot of it.All in all, this one gets a "wait for the video" from me.

JoeB131 01 May 2012

An interesting movie

In that you forget the same actor is playing both roles and for a fewminutes, you forget that it IS an actor, and you think you are gettinga peak into this regime.A key point. The character I felt that should have gotten a lot morescreen time and didn't was Saddam Hussein himself. Saddam only appearsin a couple of scenes, as does the other son, Qusay.Still, this is an interesting movie, in that we get a glimpse of whatthings were like within the Iraqi regime. We see Latif, who is a decentman, dragged into this awful world. What is lacking is the the relationship that Uday had with the rest ofhis family, other than an implication he had an incestuous relationshipwith his mother, or maybe a mother surrogate. It was also implied Udaywas gay.Still,it's a pretty good movie, and definitely worth watching.

The Devil's Double 10/10

I started loving this film within the first few seconds. This film hasmany redeeming features and I personally found it very enjoyable.Director Lee Tamahori brings a lot of the key Oscar-winning players ofthe Slumdog team back for this new film. Latif / Dominic Cooper Thehuman connection element was most fascinating, as we wonder what wewould do if placed in a similar situation ??? We are really "with"Latif on his journey, as we see him discover a reason to live and howhis life perspective changes, not just how to get free from UdaySaddam. The Devil's Double, does not simply prove the point that humanswill do whatever it takes to survive in dire circumstances. In fact, Imight argue 9 of 10 people wouldn't do what Latif Yahia (DominicCooper) does in this film. The Devil's Double, A Definite must-see10/10 stars.

With great power comes great irresponsibility

"The Devils Double" gives a slice of life when wealth and power areserved in large portions (and Papa the great is always around to pickup the tab!). Son of Saddam Hussein sitting high up on the food chain,Uday Hussein's lust for power, cocaine and woman is something thatcannot be tamed. On the other hand there is God fearing and high onmoral upbringing Latif Yahiya, who is coerced into signing a pact withthe devil.Dominic Cooper breathes life into the Gemini characters, the Dr. Jekyll& Mr. Hyde act is indeed Academy awards material. When he dons the capof Uday Hussein, there is a striking rawness in his performance whichmakes it stunningly good. When he switches to Latif Yahiya, he ismeasured and precise to highlight the anguish and suffocation withinthe walls of a golden palace but smeared in blood. Sarrab (LudivineSagnier) is love-interest to both Uday Hussein and Latif Yahiya. In thepenultimate moments she ends being a contrived character. The storystays focused on the junior, owing to which Saddam Hussein (PhilipQuast) is on purpose relegated to the background, however the dictatorin his prime comes across quite virile and commanding.Verdict: Quite an interesting watch indeed!

The Vidiot Reviews...

The Devil's DoublePolitical figures that are looking for an impersonator, should use anSNL cast member - not only are they spot-on, but no one will mind ifthey're assassinated.Unfortunately, for the dead-ringer in this drama, the dictator heresembles is looking locally for his double. When an Iraqi citizen, Latif (Dominic Cooper), with a strikingsimilitude to Uday (Dominic Cooper), the eldest son of Saddam Hussein(Philip Quast), is asked to service as Uday's political decoy, herefuses.Latif quickly learns, however, that you don't say no to the sadisticson of a dictator.Forced to emulate and pal around with the unhinged heir, Latif'srestraint is pushed to its limits as he watches Uday murder and rapewhomever he pleases. With two superb performances from Dominic Cooper, The Devil's Double isan explicit, stylistic, overblown masterpiece.Thankfully, for American politicians, their country is full of crazy, old, white look-a-likes. No two people can ever be truly identical..

The Devil's Double. There may be many aspects of the film people willagree and disagree with but the title couldn't have been more accurate. The film tells the story of Uday Hussein and Latif Yahia - who isforced to become Uday's 'fiday' - his body double. From the outset thefilm places Latif in the life and environment of the Hussein family whoenjoy the best that life can offer them within Iraq. This is so muchthe case that the first five minutes of the film is used to introducethe wealth and power that is present in Uday's life. The bestresidence, cars, clothing and women - which is most important to Uday -are naturally present throughout the film. Another three minutes intothe film Uday has already outlined his desire that Latif is to work forhim. This told me the director either didn't want to spend too muchtime in Latif's previous life or wanted to stay true to real life andget straight to the point.. Latif will have known any disobediencewould risk his families safety and therefore the decision, if thereever was one, would always be to accept.Uday Hussein is the equivalent to King George III, 'The Mad King'. Toocareless to have such power, too reckless to be trusted with suchresponsibility and too mentally ill to be roaming free in a country. Hehas no care for anyone but his family, especially his father who hefears immensely. It is clear he will do anything to satisfy his ownneeds, which become more and more sadistic as the film proceeds. Latifon the other hand is exactly the opposite, he is a man who knows wrongfrom right and understands the experiences of the average family inIraq. He fills in at meetings, speeches and public appearances becauseit is his duty to but in private he despises the life that Uday revelsin. In fact it seems all of Uday's staff know he is quite possiblyinsane and are compassionate towards Latif, even Uday's women seem todesire Latif more despite their appearances being identical. I guesspersonality does come above looks after all.The story is set during the Gulf War but specific detail is placed uponthe invasion of Kuwait. We learn that it was Iraq's aim to acquireKuwait but the films emphasis is largely placed upon the personal livesof Uday and Latif rather than the political areas they could have goneinto. Through out we are shown how easily Uday can pick up women, howthere is no consequences when he kills another citizen and generallyhow much he brings shame towards himself and his nation, shame that cannever really be frowned upon even when he is partying on drugs andalcohol until he either passes out or stumbles around foaming at themouth. I did state before that I thought it'd be important to learnabout what it was like to be Saddam's son and this film does thatperfectly but it never really shows the life that the ordinary personin Iraq lives. The best thing to do it seemed was to not possessanything (including a daughter) that Uday might desire and then you canlive a perfectly happy and peaceful life.. I'm sure it wasn't thatsimple but still, at times during the film it sure feels that way. Theaction and violence isn't really used as often as I'd expect in a dramaof this sort but id still say its used effectively. Death, blood andgore is present so beware if you don't like surprises because thosescenes literally come out of no where, reflecting just how unstableUday is.As for the ending, it was just right in my opinion and wasn't over thetop at all, probably because the film is based upon a true story. Thereis also a brief amount of text that comes at the finish that willresult in you heading to Google to do your own personal research!Overall the film gives a decent insight into the state of Iraq'sleadership in the early 90's, the plot is undoubtedly entertainingdespite some repetition and the disturbing acts that Uday carries out.The effects and cinematography were excellent throughout butultimately, Dominic Cooper who plays the part of both the maincharacters makes this film great with his lunacy and ruthlessness inthe role of Uday and his class, strength and control in the role ofLatif.

Entertaining, if deeply flawed, film

Latif Yahia (Dominic Cooper) is a patriotic Iraqi soldier who findshimself brought in by Uday Hussein (also Cooper), a former classmateand son of Saddam to whom he bears an uncanny resemblance. Uday wantshim to become his body double to protect him from potentially dangeroussituations, and make appearances while Uday indulges in women, drinkand drugs. Latif refuses, only to be tortured and beaten until heagrees. After undergoing some minor plastic surgery and given some faketeeth, Latif shadows Uday and realises he is an absolute psychopath, raping and murdering women as well as torturing anyone who challengesor opposes him. Uday's mistress Sarrab (Ludivine Sagnier), tired ofUday's unpredictable nature and wild behaviour, shows interest inLatif, and the two start a dangerous affair. The story of Latif Yahia has been dubbed dubious by variousinvestigative journalists due to inconsistencies in his stories andclaims by associates of Uday Hussein's that he never used body doubles. That aside, it makes for a quite fascinating story, if a not whollybelievable one. Instead of fashioning a serious film about one of thekey figures in the troubled and violent recent history of Iraq, director Lee Tamahori (whose recent films include the shitty Bond filmDie Another Day (2002) and Nicolas Cage vehicle Next (2007)) has made agangster film. It plays out like Scarface in Baghdad, and is full ofviolence, drugs and women, and all but ignores the political and socialaspects. It's the main problem with the film, as although this has thepotential to be a very good film, the execution is that seen a thousandtimes before in the gangster genre. In the hands of someone like DavidFincher or Michael Mann, this could have been something much more. However, the film has a trump card in the form of lead Dominic Cooper, who juggles dual roles with apparent ease. I've never been his biggestfan (he's hardly been stretched in his career), but he shows here thathe has leading man qualities. Although his portrayal of Uday is wildlyover-the-top to the point of a cartoon character sometimes, it'sclearly as the director intended, and he switches from the broodingLatif to the psychopathic Uday effortlessly. So whether you believe thestory or not (I don't), it makes for an entertaining, if deeply flawed, film, and Uday Hussein proves a terrifying madman, especially giventhat he was very real (before US forces killed him in 2003).www.the-wrath-of-blog.blogspot.com
