Since I've been in Colombia lots of times, I was interested in watchingthis movie. Well I was very disappointed, first of all the Colombianspresumably in Bogota are speaking English, ?? and with a bad accent. You would think the film crew would know that Spanish is the languagespoken there, it get even sillier when they greet one another with theword "hola" and then says the rest in English. This is just as silly asin the movie Valkyrie where all the Germans speak English.I don't know where they shot the Bogota scenes, but it's certainly notin Bogota, anyone who lives there, or has visited Bogota will seestraightaway that this is not the correct place. It turns even moresilly, when the scenes changes to Chicago, when they start to speakSpanish, as if it's the custom there. When they screw up in these basicand logical elements, it does not matter how cute and elegant ZoeSaladana is. By the way she's from New Jersey USA.

The movie plot is the quite predictable revenge story which audienceshave seen a thousand times. It also has a tinge of tomb raider-ness init, but not quite. At the start of the movie the girl playing the young Cataleya managesto prepare the audience for the future killer role played by Zoe.Zoe zaldana, delivers a great performance in acting, stunts and action. But the support she gets from other characters are quite saddening. Also the most of the action scenes seems to be fast forwarded trying toimprove the close combats. However, Her screen presence and actingmanages to add a bit of taste to the poor script which I personallythink should have included at least a twist towards the end.Overall, its an enjoyable movie with not much of thinking needed. Ifzoe was not cast in this, it would have been an utter flop.

After her parents are killed by her father's criminal associatesbecause of questions of loyalty and trust, a young girl devotes herlife to the art of killing and revenge. Now mature and a seasonedassassin, the role is played by Zoe Saldana who proves herself to be avery talented actress in every way. If you like action films andkick-ass women you will not be disappointed. This movie never lags, there is always something going on to keep your full attention. The FBIare hot for her. As well as the CIA and the guy who killed her father, both of whom are in cahoots with each other. So there is good suspensewith Cataleya going after targets and being targeted herself. When yousee Zoe in leotards you can't help but think she would make a greatCatwoman, which she kind of actually was in her first big movie,Avatar. The fighting style employed by our heroine Cataleya was veryinteresting to me. It was not the usual direct "confrontational" stylethat you usually see the men do or even other women in action films. Her style was more "slippery" and therefore "indirect". A style thatsays: "You're bigger than me, but I'm smarter, faster, and moreflexible than you are. I thought it was quite becoming and practicalfor a woman. And generally for anyone who has a weight and strengthhandicap in battle. This woman was as slippery as soap the way shemaneuvered out, through, around, and behind to get out of tight spotsand deliver her own attacks. I loved it! That said, this movie doesunfortunately contain one of my little pet peeves of action films. Youknow the one where the guy gets kicked in the nuts and 3 seconds laterhe's back in business? If you're a guy and you've ever beendeliberately or accidentally hit in the nuts (I have), you know thepain is such that all you want to do is curl up in a fetal position andcry for your mommy (Which I have not!) --Okay, which I have. Love,Boloxxxi.

Colombiana stars Zoe Saldana as a girl from Bogota, Colombia whobecomes an assassin after witnessing her parents' murder. That's prettymuch it. There's really no more, no less. The plot is something you'veseen a million times before and the ending is pretty predictable. Thecharacters are not developed very much but that doesn't matter, muchlike my quibbles with the completely inaccurate shooting locations thatpose as Colombia at the beginning of the movie. This is an actionmovie, first and foremost and the movie moves quick enough not to wasteany chance at seeing a good action sequence. Saldana is good in therole and she does a good enough job anchoring the film. The rest can'tbe said about the rest of the movie. I can't to say it was bad. Butsome of the acting range was wildly uneven. Plus some of the film wasdownright laughable. One scene that really stood out to me was thescene where Saldana's character tells her uncle that she wants to be akiller. He tries to convince her to change her mind by taking out a gunand shooting a moving car in broad daylight! In front of other people! That scene alone should make it a eligible candidate to be included onthe podcast "How Did This Get Made". Now despite my reservations withthe lack of character development and the weak plot, I thought it waspretty entertaining trash. It's the type of movie where you leave yourbrain at the door and have a good time.

First of all this is NOT a movie about Colombia. The producers may havefailed on representing it but this is not the POINT of this movie. It'san action movie about a girl from Colombia and that's pretty much itregarding Colombia. Don't get all frustrated with it. Here's my quickreview: 1 - Trailer: I wanted to see this movie mostly based on the trailerwhich I found catchy. Action and sexy Zoe Saldana sells it all. Still Iwent on a cheap night because I wasn't convinced this would be worththe full price entry. What you see in the trailer is what you get. Alot of action left to be seen and overall it's a good intro to themovie.2 - Cast & Characters: Ahhh Zoe Zoe! It's hard to watch her rather thanjust stare at her. She delivers a pretty solid performance in thismovie. She goes all around sneaking up the bad guys and taking them outin creative and yet plausible ways unlike Angelina Jolie in Salt (2010)where her 100 pounds character takes out multiple 250 pounds guys infist fights. The supporting characters are your "typical" Mexican(Colombian in this story!) guys that pretty much do nothing other thanholding guns outside a villa and sipping on drink and cigars. Genericpolice guys fill the rest of the cast but I found Callum Blue quiteenjoyable to watch.3 - Plot & Story: I think the story is so generic that the littletwists added to the script makes them even more surprising. You alwaysfeel like you know the next move but most of the time somethingunexpected happens. Unfortunately, the script as a whole is a bitsloppy and poorly paced. I didn't get bored at all in this movie andthough the intrigue isn't much catchy, it was enough to keep meinterested. There are many laughable moments (mostly intended) which isfun but the drama is really cheesy.4 - Theme & Genre: As an action flick, this one stands right. It isn'ta melting pot of car crashes and explosions out of nowhere. There isplenty of action and a good mix between Hollywood fireworks andrealistic fights. The camera angles and editing sometimes get confusingbut in some scenes they really add something cool to watch.5 - Overall Appreciation: Alright let's face the obvious. There is noOscars material here. This will get MTV Teen Choice Awards at best. It's a cheap night movie that is entertaining to watch and where youshould not expect a classic in cinema. Did I appreciate it? Yes! Is itgood? Not bad. I give it 6 out of 10 for Zoe Saldana, good fight scenesand cinematography. Too bad the supporting characters, cheesy drama andpoor script kills it a bit.

Zoe Saldana is a star on the rise, she's strong, beautiful, intelligentand a decent actress. Time to test her star meter as she takes the leadfor the first time on her own in an action film. In Hollywood, it'srare to have an action movie staring a female, you need a good actressto take the lead in order for it to be taken seriously. But myboyfriend really wanted to see this movie because he just adores Zoe, Ithink he just has a good crush on her, but it was his turn for therental. We watched it a couple nights ago and to my surprise withoutany knowledge of the film prior to seeing it, I really did enjoy thismovie. I'm a little surprised at the rating as this is a better moviethat I've seen for a while at least for 2011. I thought Zoe made agreat action star, she was tough, sexy and brought a lot to a typicalstory.Fabio, a gangster and drug runner, has a meeting with Don Luis, to payoff his remaining debt and leave his employment. Fabio, however, knowsthat Don Luis will put a hit out on him for leaving with a valuableitem that he holds and wants, a small disk with valuable information onthe drug lords, so he rushes home to prepare his wife, Alicia and hisyoung daughter, Cataleya. Fabio hands Cataleya the item that Don Luiswants, telling her not to lose it and to give it to the Ambassadortelling her that it is "her passport". He also gives Cataleya anaddress in Chicago. She then uses the business card her father gave herto get into the U.S. Embassy and goes to the Ambassador's office. Inexchange for this, they give her a passport and a small amount of cash, and fly her to Miami. She goes to Chicago after and meets her uncleEmilio, who teaches her how to become one of the slickest killers. Shegrows into a strong woman who eventually goes in above her head goinginto a personal revenge plot on her parent's death. The story may be predictable, but I liked the way it was handled overall. The action scenes were very tight and exciting. I loved that firstscene with Cataleyna in the jail cell, it was very clever and almostreminded me of Catwoman the way she was just sliding her way throughthings. One thing I wished they would have talked about more was herfeeling so lonely, it's a very brief conversation she has with herlover when he asks what she feels every night and it's never touched onagain. She goes through this tough time as a child and it was just liketo see her as an adult was more about the fighting and not thestruggles she faces at times. But the actors did a good job, muchcredit to the man who played her uncle, Cliff Curtis, who had excellentchemistry with her. The film does need to explain more with the storybut I felt that this was still a good movie with it's action andcharacters. Zoe is a good actress and I can't wait to see her more inthe future.7/10

This film plays out like if the Jason Bourne trilogy married any of thethree Hit-man games. That is pretty much one sentence that perfectlydescribes this movie. The cast is fine, not impressive and the actionis fun but poorly shot and brutally edited to the point that you areconfused as to what is going on and you feel very disoriented after awhile wondering why they don't slow down and show you each shot insteadof cutting every second. A lot of the scenes didn't make sense, therewere numerous plot holes that were never explained and things ingeneral that just didn't add up. Script was weak and this movie has oneof the most awkward sexual scenes I've seen in a movie. dissatisfyingand not worth seeing unless your desperate to see Zoe naked from behindand dressed in skimpy outfits.

This is my first review in IMDb. I wanted to warn people to stay awayfrom this movie so that you can save your 90minutes of time. wasted my2 hours of time watching this movie. I knew this is movie won't getinto your skin what makes it worse is that you can tell the next scenefrom scene one including the climax. Utter waste of time. Big joke isAgent Ross not sure what FBI/CIA agents are doing in this movie. Icould not watch this crap even after I was half drunk. Do not recommendthis movie even you have 4 hours of free time. you can go for sleep andthat will be best way to spend rather than watching this. Supportingactors are nothing to do except holding cigar and glasses. good thatthey didn't show the first 22 murders.

I've mentioned more than once that the Luc Besson founded Europa Corpof films are churning out quality action thrillers like how Milkyway inthe East have been doing of late, and with its offerings like Taken,From Paris with Love, and 22 Bullets, I was looking forward toColombiana, especially since it has a female protagonist to begin withso there's a good break from the usual machismo, and it's set in theUSA rather than the usual European jet-setting locations. But the film, written by Robert Mark Kamen and Luc Besson himself, and directed byOlivier Megaton who helmed Transporter 3, was a little bit lacklustrein its final product, which is most unfortunate. The fault was at its core story, where a young girl escaped sure deaththanks to her parent's tips and training, and is off from Colombia onher own wits and ability to live a new life in the USA under theauspices of a trusted family aide (Cliff Curtis). There she grows up,receives an education, forces her guardian to perfect her foundationalskills in assassination, and is off to perform hit jobs to supplementthe family income. During her hits she conjures up calling cards inarrogance in order to lure her enemies out, but as they say, if youplay with fire, you'll get burnt, and fire burns withoutdiscrimination. Which of course led to the expected big bang finale.Wait a minute, couldn't Cataleya (Zoe Saldana) use the resources at herdisposal to track down her enemies, and then finish them all off in onefell swoop since she's quite the bad ass we've come to see through thevarious establishing scenes, such as a very elaborate jailhouse hit jobthat saw her slink around like a Catwoman to showcase both her stealthand physicality? The only excuse I can cook up on behalf of thefilmmakers is that she needed to carry out hit jobs in order to makeloads of money, to afford her all the wonderful toys from nastyvehicles to weapons of all shape and sizes that it will put manycinematic action heroes to shame. Otherwise, it simply made no sense toexpose herself, and in that also to have a romantic relationship sheknows will lead to nowhere for the secrets she's hiding, only to useher partner for sex, and put herself out there under her enemy's radarwhen she should have lied low and hit them with the element of completesurprise. In any case, if you're to take the story at face value, then ZoeSaldana does make an attractive, effective action heroine which is rarethese days since there are less than a handful who can balance gracefulpoise with the physical demands of a role like this one. It's a returnto La Femme Nikita for Besson and perhaps having to dabble with amake-believe grown up Mathilda that never got made (and hopefully nottoo), except that this film got let down by weak plot development, criminal even when it cannot make much sense even if you're stretchingbelievability a little for an action flick, despite the usual premiseset up as motivation for its protagonist in a typical tale of vengeanceof the highest order. There are excesses in the storyline that justscreams at you, when you realize logic would mean having to jump rightinto the final act, because it can and does make sense. The villains are shadowy goons without personality nor posing any realmenace, except for their modus operandi which is to eradicate one'sfamily, presenting very little real and present danger, and many goons, some 20+ of them being compressed into a black and white montage, beingnothing other than fodder for Cataleya to empty lead into. WhileSaldana definitely put in a lot of work to become believable as theslinky assassin, somehow she got upstaged by Amandla Stenberg whoplayed the younger kid version of the same character, having an entire, impressive escape scene in the first act being the highlight of thisfilm that will give Hannah a run for her money, in my opinion. It wouldhave been the huge fight in the toilet with Jordi Molia who plays themuscleman Marco, if not for the artificial speeding up of the moment tocheapen the effort put in.I guess coming up with a lemon is part and parcel for a productionhouse, where everything cannot possibly end up turning into gold. Thenthere's The Lady which is fast proving to become a darling at festivalsand expected to score at upcoming awards, so perhaps it's of adifferent nature for Besson now to put aside heroines who do battlewith guns, for those who do so with their minds to win over hearts. Andthat's clearly not what Colombiana is delivering.
Robert Collins 13 May 2012
Colombiana is just a mindless action romp with no substance and far toomany action scenes and no characterization , it really isn't a greatfilm, the only thing that is great in any way about it is the ratherstring performance from Zoe Saldana, she will easily become a greataction star after this, I do think it's good that females are startingto become more prominent in the action genre, this however was just toocliché ridden ti compete with great films of late such as Salt orHanna. So many times throughout this film I was thinking cliché clichécliché!!! If you switch your mind off and decide you don't want to knowanything about your characters you will be fine to enjoy Colombiana.Parts of Colombiana are OK, a strong opening sequence with the youngerCataleya is very good and the first scene where the adult Cataleya goesall mission impossible in a prison is also great to watch, unfortunately from there it all just goes down hill, the whole romanceaspect towards the end of the movie isn't convincing in the slightestand it's really unnecessary in a film like this. It's just not up to scratch in my opinion, just a b-grade femaleassassin that isn't memorable in the slightest. I hope that Zoe Saldanagets another chance at a great action film because she is really theonly good thing Colombiana has to offer and I think in a better roleshe could really shine.Mindless, Cliché, Unimpressive.

Long form is so hard that most films will do anything to get out of it.A standard escape is to have three acts that the viewer will accept asbelonging together. Each of these can then be a small story by itself. And that is what we have here. We accept it because the grand stroke ofrevenge is so powerful that we simply accept it as the subterraneandriver that binds the acts. The first of these teased with promise. A little girl sees her parentsmurdered and surprises us as she escapes through a warren ofsemipoverty and negotiates with the CIA to escape the country. We neverlearn the details, and that enhances the story. Also cool is Luc'sinfluence in acrobatics on buildings. Act two has the now adult woman as a contract killer. So much of thismakes no sense. But previously we were primed to store latent factsthat may at some point -- we suppose -- surprise as they take is instrange directions. It doesn't happen. Instead we simply learn that sheis asexually brilliant at what she does. Act three is a standard setup as she takes her revenge on the originaloffenders, now in New Orleans. Again, there is an unspecified CIAconnection that we never are told. But by this act we have given uphope for any twists or surprises. It all travels a straight line. Three acts, then, but three different stories, each rooted in adifferent genre with different expressions and nodes.I went to this because I am interested in the evolution of women'sroles in these action films. But this seems to have been made inanother era. This is a woman who is weak. She is a natural genius atwhat she does, natch, but what she does is an addiction. She kicks assbut is the loser. There is a patch at the end where we are supposed tobe appeased that life will be fine from now on because (that importantword) because she has found a good man. It is all tragic, anddiscouraged me greatly. The middle act, where we see episodes where she cleverly extinguishesmen then draws her signature orchid on their chests (no kidding) is asmuch a story of the filmmaker making his pieces work, but losing hissoul.Zoe has a wasted grace in how she moves. Lets hope for better for her.Ted's Evaluation -- 1 of 3: You can find something better to do withthis part of your life.

I was excited to see this movie. The cast seemed strong, the premisehad a lot of potential, and I love Colombia. At best, I thought, itcould be entertaining.Unfortunately, this film had a lot of holes in it, and didn't feeldeveloped at all. Cataleya was mysterious enough, but to a fault. Wherewas the transition from child to assassin? Characters were introducedand disappeared without any introduction. Also as a side issue, though the title was "Colombiana" and started offin Colombia, there wasn't much other thought given to the country orculture. They could have at least taken the time to use some Colombianmusic throughout the film. I was especially disappointed that thecharacters didn't speak any substantial amount of Spanish in the film, and instead all spoke with a generic "foreign" accent in English. Thismade the film very inauthentic. For the most part, this film was mildly entertaining. It had a lot ofpotential, and delivered in some small ways, but not enough. It neverreally had me at the edge of my seat, which I think is important for anaction film, and I never felt that Cataleya was put into any reallytough situations.

If I could have thought of anything else to do I would have left! The heroine looking for revenge forgot that her parents put themselvesAND her in the position she was in - Not to mention her uncle, also amurderer! So we are to sympathize with her as she threatens law enforcement toaccomplish her revenge - Not for me! Basically "Hannah" with darker skin and from a much more evil family. Here is an idea, tell a story of the daughter rising above the evilnessthat was her life and maybe only becoming violent to protect herself -If you need the violence. Don't go see this!

9-year old Cataleya barely escapes with her life when Bogota drug baronDon Luis has her parents killed. Making her way to Chicago, she enlistsher thuggish uncle Emilio to train her to become a killer. Having grownup to become Zoe Saldana, she then embarks on a career as a contractkiller, all the while zeroing in on Don Luis' organisation while tryingto stay one step ahead of the US authorities (the CIA has baled DonLuis out of a hot spot and is sheltering him) and Don Luis himself, while trying to maintain a romantic relationship in which she lets herboyfriend have absolutely no information about herself whatsoever. This is a totally by-the-numbers action thriller. It has some strongnegatives - the main character, for whom you are asked to feelsympathy, is a contract killer (yes, I understand why, but still...).Her much-loved uncle is, at best, a thug. In fact, none of thecharacters in this film have much in the way of redeemingcharacteristics. It also has some positive elements. Much of the action is excellent(Cataleya's opening escape in Bogota, and the first caper of the adultCataleya in a police station are both terrific. There is a fight in abathroom towards the end which is brilliantly choreographed, butdistractingly badly filmed and edited. Zoe Saldana is, as always,eye-catchingly beautiful, although she seems worryingly thinner thanNeytiri was in Avatar. But the strongest positive is Amandla Stenberg, who plays 9-year old Cataleya. You can believe that she will grow up tobe Zoe Saldana but, in her own right, she is physically able, and givesa terrific performance, both self-assured and vulnerable, as the partdemands. She is a performer to watch out for. This film entertained me, but left no aftertaste.

As I watch more movies I have noticed that film makers have signaturemovies they work really well with. Luc Besson uses the same elements inthis movie that worked well in others. If you take a Dash of DistrictB13, mix in some elements of Leon: the Professional and finish off withLa Femme Nikita, you have Colombiana. Yes, you might look at thisopening line and think "so nothing new or original". Some of the actionis the same but this movie does stand out as it's a different storywith these elements not a rehash. I know I know, you are thinking "howcan you have the same elements and not be a rehash"? Well let's look atit this way. Action scenes can only be done so many ways, and there areno new ideas. The only newness to them is how you string them together.Besson uses these elements like a master chef blends togetheringredients that everyone loves. This movie gets a green light from me.I truly enjoyed the ride this film took me on.To read more of this review go tohttp://fatsamuraireviews.blogspot.com/

I'm going to begin by saying Besson's Leon is one of the best filmsever made. Screenplay, acting, soundtrack, directing,cinematography,.....every aspect was magnificent. That being said,Columbiana is no Leon. Basically it's just a superficial Jolie filmwithout Jolie. The story is ridiculously expounded, the actors aresecond rate, and the setting is about as morose and uninteresting as itcould possibly be. No one cares about any character in this film. Ithas no heart, and no soul. Just a lot of bangs and booms. If that'syour deal, go see it....although there are better like-genre films towaste your money on. Besson missed his chance at a blockbuster sequelto a classic. This dreg is not it, although I'm sure it was in the backof their minds when they conceived this tripe. This film will be forgotten in a month. The comparisons will kill it.Meanwhile, Leon and Mathilda live on forever.

It is interesting movie which has many characteristics of Luc Besson'sstyle. Hyper edgy, hyper violent and hyper intelligent. The action israw unsweetened and in your face. The similarities with Nikita are numerous - woman killer, fast, intelligent and unpredictable warrior in relationship with sweetunsuspecting guy. However the similarities end up here. Many tried unsuccessfully todouble the amazing performance of Anne Parillaud - the original Nikitayet the first time since there is a real match in the extremelybeautiful Zoe Zaldana. Zoe Zaldana is absolutely convincing asunstoppable deadly hunter yet out-pours wild eroticism in the process.Another high point is Amandla Stenberg who steals the show as the 10years old Catalea. Really amazing! I was disappointed to hear at theend the sweetened mainstream-aligned cover instead of the original NIN"Hurt". The original is edgier with unusual chord progression anddeeply disturbing Trent Reznor performance - it could underlineperfectly the story.

This is a great movie! Incredible skill in movie- making had been usedon this one. The movie gets us to sympathize a family and person whichactions we normally should / would not sympathize. A great plot, greatacting, perfect balance of action and sensitivity. I really have a hardtime understanding how people could actually rate this one under asolid 7. I mean, come on a 5,9? This actually makes me think twice now, when searching IMDb for apparently "good" movies, only taking inconsideration those who are above a certain rating. I really recommend watching this movie for everyone who likes actionmovies on the level (or even above) james bond, mission impossible etc
Harry T. Yung 08 May 2012
Luc Besson could have written this with his eyes closed and one handtied behind his back. However, this latest Nikita variation, wilemostly more of the same, has its unique selling points. After havingher unique beauty ridiculously presented in stupid animation in"Avatar" (2009) (and ironically winning awards with it), Zoe Saldanafinally gets what could possibly become her signature piece. To see herin her freshest and most youthful charm, however, watch "Vantage point"(2008) as part of an impressive ensemble cast. In "Colombiana",Cataleya the protagonist she plays is described, quite aptly, by onecritic as a "clever hero". While there is sufficient action to keepgenre fans happy (particularly one unique melee fight sequence towardsthe end), Cataleya excels more in brain work, skill with technology, stealthy precision rather than in physical power.
