Biographic movie of the witty, overachieving, hot-tempered Rudy Giuliani, spaning from his rising days as a New York district attorney in the early 1980s to his marriage to part-time actress Donna Hanover, to his candicies for mayor of New York City and his controversial methods to tackle the citys crime and urban problems, as well as his romance with his assistant Cristyne Lategano which lead to the failure of his marriage, to his battle with prostate cancer, all leading up to the terrible day of September 11, 2001 which Guiliani himself narrowly escaped death after suicide terrorists hijacked and crashed two passenger airliners into the twin World Trade Center towers leading to their collapse in which Guilianis toughness and spirited personality help calm the citys residents to face the chaos on that day which made him a national hero.

My main question regards the motivation behind this story. Firstly, does it aim to provide an informative account of Rudy or simply cash inon September 11? Moreover, if his biography is intended to be paramount, I am not sure whether it glorifies or condemn his character. On the whole, i thought this movie was poor. The production values wereterrible, to say the very least. As was the handling of the events ofSeptember 11. To include such emotive footage of that day is dangerous, especially when Rudy exclaims "what have these bastards done to mycity?". From an objective standpoint this line was simply ectopic inthe context of the movie, almost adding light to the situation. Thefollowing "women and children first" dialogue seems misplaced in theterror and hysteria of the situation.

I'll start by saying I'm a fan of Mr. Giuliani and read his book,Leadership. So I was very disappointed by this movie for severalreasons. The script is extremely flat. Yes, it does show that Giuliani had atemper, liked opera and loved the law. But in a way that made me think the writerhad a checklist to work from. And one that did not include Giuliani'slighter side. The script barely allows him to smile or laugh or enjoy thepeople around him. For example, it could have included his appearances onSaturday Night Live, his second Mayoral race and the image problem he hadtoovercome or his friendship with Joe Torre and the Yankees. Indeed,SHOWINGhis relationship to the team, rather than just SAYING he loved them, wouldhave done wonders for showing him as the proudest New Yorker. And makinganeffort to portray has relationship with his children would have been nice, too. The people around Giuliani rarely react to him. For example, on becomingthe lead Federal Prosecutor in Manhattan, he tells a roomful of FederalProsecutors that they have gotten fat and lazy and no one reacts in anyway. He explains to a roomful of prosecutors how he will take down the Mafiaonconspiracy to violate RICO laws (which he reminds them he wrote) andagain,no one reacts. The most frequent reaction is silent bustling in responsetothe scripted tirades. He's often "right", but he's not even allowed toenjoy outsmarting the other guy (a la Jack McCoy of Law &Order).I've seen the movie twice now (hoping it would be better) and still don'tknow why the 9/11 events are done in flashback throughout the movie. Myonly guess is they couldn't figure out how to end it otherwise.Overall, I think that Rudy Giuliani deserved a much better biography.Hopefully someone will do it someday.
