After a serial killer named Red John murdered Patrick Janes wife and daughter, Jane dedicated his life to hunting down and killing Red John. To that end he gave up his lucrative pretense of being a psychic and joined the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as a consultant to the team responsible for investigating the Red John case, led by Senior Agent Teresa Lisbon. Using Janes exceptional gift for observation and his mentalist tricks, the team is able to close an unprecedented number of cases, but Janes unconventional and often outright illegal methods also bring much censure down on Lisbons head, making his assistance both a blessing and a curse. Meanwhile, the hunt for Red John continues...

What's with the word RED in every title

I LOVE this show. Yes, it has the same premise as Psych and Monk but itdoesn't use it in the same way. It is very real feeling. Psych borderson stupid at times (but I watch it). Gus is always mad at Shawn andalways shows contempt for him. Monk can and does drive you crazy (alsostupid at times, but I watch it, too). Mentalist gives me the best ofboth without the stupidity. I wish I had his talent. Any day. I alsothink he is very handsome but dark because of his family tragedy. Hehas issues but he does not let them get in the way of his gift. I ratethis show way above the other 2. So what is the link between the wordred in every episode title. I assume it must have something to do withRed John but I don't even know how he got the name Red John. Doesanyone know? Maybe I missed an episode early on but cant figure it out.If it has to do with Red John I have not even figured out how herelates to every story line. I don't believe he is mentioned in everyepisode. Was he?

simply amazing. a blissful television experience, no doubts about it.

I wish deeply that all television shows were this easy to watch.By that I mean, I don't cringe every episode of this television showexpecting the gaffs, downright silly lines, formulaic plots, andirritatingly predictable lines that haunt so many crime dramas of late. This show is entertaining, enjoyable, and a fun experience every singletime I tune it. The characters are witty, the actors and actressesright on cue, and everyone seems to be enjoying the experience ofworking on the show. I think perhaps the actresses could stand to eat alittle more--every so often the dizziness that accompanies extremehunger seems to mar their acting abilities. I would also very much liketo see more backstory on and development of the women on this show. Theepisode where Lisbon faked a perp into believing her entire departmentbelieved she was crazy was AMAZING. It was also my favorite episodethus far.I think the angle of using a fairly ordinary person's perspectivethrough which to approach the process of detective- and crime-workprovides a keen, fresh view into the criminal justice system. Jayne'sreactions to the ways in which the Bureau handles crime work are one ofmy favorite parts of the show. His clear awareness of the absurdity ofprotocol matches the view by which any ordinary person without yearsstudying to be a bureau investigator would approach theseinvestigations. He is right; procedurs ARE ridiculous. It's nice to beoffered the opportunity to laugh at that fact, rather than to swallowdown the annoyance of being forced to see through the eyes ofcharacters who buy every bit of the manual, who live and die by thatsame protocol that strikes Jayne as being so ridiculous.Of course, Jayne is not a "normal" man by any means, but he is anoutsider entering a complex world outside his normal purview. Thatfish-out-of-water effect is rarely carried off well, and even morerarely features a man rather than a woman designed so that others havesomeone to laugh at. This show thoroughly overturns typical plots andassumptions about what writing on television shows is allowed to do.Even more shockingly, it got POPULAR super fast. Thank God for that. It's also nice to see a man doing the oft-considered "feminine" work ofreading people's body language, breaking the rules, and turning a blindeye to the justice system in pursuit of ACTUAL justice. It is equallynice to see a woman being the enforcer of those same rules, doing herjob very effectively and without complaint, being respected by herpeers. She is professional, he is not, and the whole thing bothoverturns gender norms and plays off together quite nicely. The two leads play off each other miraculously well.I wouldn't want this one to be going away anytime soon. I'm going to gobuy more dvds so y'all will have even MORE reason not to cancel thisshow.I'm trying to think of something to criticize about this show. All Ican think of is that I want MORE of everything--more plot, morecharacter development, more scripts, more scenes, more money beingrerouted into this plucky show. That says it all right there.Watching is unfailingly an educational experience.

Great potential, Bad bad Direction

I continued to see The Mentalist even after being disappointed severaltimes because I felt it had tremendous potential, maybe even be one ofthe top shows on television. But alas! it has continued to disappoint. In fact it has eventually pushed me to write a review so that I canvent my frustration with this series. One of the major flaws with The Mentalist is the characterization ofvarious roles. Dismal. Inconsistent. Poor. From Agent Lisbon to Jane, the characters seem to lack consistency. For example, I am mostirritated with Lisbon's character. She is the 'boss' but her characteris poorly defined. She is supposed to be tough, smart, strong and haveall other responsibilities of a Chief agent and a leader of a team ofdetectives but unfortunately, she is no where close. There are numerousissues with Lisbon; She asks stupid questions during investigations, states the obvious in conversations, can overpower a big strongcriminal, talks to Jane as if she owns him , and many other such thingswhich are completely unbelievable or dumb or unconvincing. RobbinTunney does not fit in the role either. It could be poor casting or baddirection or amateur script writing any of which is badly affecting theshow. Another example is of The Mentalist himself, Patrick Jane. Although heis not a 'psychic', and supposed to be reading into people's mindsthrough observations and behaviors, his character repeatedly has shownpsychic powers in various episodes which defeats the whole purpose andleaves the viewer with no explanations. Also, I am not sure if he is agood or a bad actor as he shows acting brilliance in some scenes and isextremely stupid in others. The viewer gets the impression that themoment he knows about a case, he has already solved it in his mind andknows the culprit and the the unfolding of the story is just as histhoughts or who he thinks the criminal was. There again, it could bepoor scripts or bad character definition but the flaws are clearlyseen. Others such as Rigsby and Cho are far more convincing characters andactors. Van Pelt is a waste of time and without her there wouldn't bemuch of a difference.I loved the concept of this show and the cases. Unfortunately, thedirectors and script writers have not done justice. A show with greatpotential but falls flat. I hope it improves as I know it easily canbut for now, I guess, Its probably suited for school going kids only.Amateurish!!

It is all about characters

I love these police team dramas. I am a big fan of Law & Order, butthey are not into character development. They care about the plots, andthey really make you think, but after years you end up knowing verylittle about the characters. Not so with The Mentalist. Plot is this series weak part. But, oncharacter development, both the two main characters, plus the threesecondary characters, and the "rest of the group" are very welldeveloped. And, both of the main characters can be said to be Hot,which is not bad, considering that neither of them tries to use theirhotness to manipulate the other characters, or the audience. Alsoimportant is that all characters have their own set of beliefs, andnuances, and behaviour, and even when there is a conflict because ofthose differences, those differences are treated with respect. My only problem with the series is that sometimes, the plots have ahole too many.

Rebuttal

Gee ManOWar, it appears your tastes don't go much farther than theobvious, else you'd recognize the original idea (a detective withhyper-tuned senses of observation) dates clear back to Sherlock Holmesand beyond.Psyche is no more original than Mentalist, but as any copyright lawyerwill tell you, you can't protect an idea, only the creative expressionthereof. IMO, The Mentalist is a nicely creative expression of a veryold and intriguing idea.I'l be curious to see where it goes, but it certainly beats the inanesilliness of Psyche, though I liked the show till this one came along.Who knows, it might not survive a season of scrutiny, either, but forthe time being it'll do...

excellent show doesn't disappoint

This show has been really really good from the onset, Patrick Jane'scharacter is likable and sometimes kind of funny to watch. There hasbeen some parts that made me smile and some that shocked me, a goodcombination to keep this show going. Robin Tunney who I rate as a greatactor has found herself a really good part that showcases her talents, her attitude towards Jane's methods of cracking the case make me smilebut ultimately you see how she respects him at the end of the episode.I seriously cannot wait to see if and how they catch Red John. I alsowonder what the second series will hold and if Red John reappears orsomeone else takes over the mantle this time with more seriousconsequences. Keep it up Simon Baker, your onto a winner with thisshow.

So far, so good...

'The Mentalist' is the latest American crime drama to make its way toBritish shores and so far, it is proving itself to be a promising showwhich will hopefully continue to flourish. The show revolves aroundPatrick Jane, a mentalist (someone with a highly developed sense ofobservation who can give the illusion that they have psi abilities)with a haunted past, who uses his unique skills to help the CaliforniaBureau of Investigation solve crimes.A show of this genre is obviously going to attract comparisons to othershows like 'Medium' (which is ridiculous because Jane is steadfast inhis view that he is not psychic and there are no such thing aspsychics) or 'Psych'. In the case of the latter, admittedly, there aresimilarities to be had but 'Psych' is very much drama-lite comedywhereas this show can be dark and is a serious take on having anadviser with such abilities working with law enforcement.Simon Baker does an excellent job depicting Patrick Jane as a man who,on the surface, is genial, charismatic and arrogant but hides his darkemotional problems that we catch glimpses of as the show progresses.Jane, for all his relaxed persona, is a man who cannot come to termswith his tragic past and is an insomniac with anti-social tendenciesand a cynical view of the world around him. He is a truly fascinatingcharacter and it will be interesting to see how he continues todevelop. The rest of the cast do well but for now their characters takesecond place to Jane. Female lead character Teresa Lisbon is the leaderof the CBI team that Jane liaisons with and is starting to stand up asa character in her own right as well as someone who is beginning tounderstand the secrets of Jane. However, everyone else still need timeto be develop, which is understandable for a show only in its infancy. In all, 'The Mentalist' continues to excel and seeks to be yet anothersuccess from America (so, CBS, please don't cancel it!). It offers aunique insight into crime and the people involved. It also involvestantalising characters who leave the viewers desperate to uncover whatmakes them tick. Here's looking to a good few seasons to enjoy.

A show to be taken lightly, dramatic with an edge of humour.

I've watched a lot of TV-series, The Mentalist being among them. Iwould not say that this show is incredibly innovative, i would not daresay it is the best show out there, since there are so many. I wouldonly say that it is a very nicely written, greatly acted show, withsome very interesting characters, Patrick Jane being at its core. Heis, by far, one of the most interesting and lovable character I've everseen. Think of him as a ''Dr.House meets Mulder from xfiles''.And bythis i mean that he is somewhat of a cocky an arrogant genius (House)that is driven to find the truth, that is calm and gentle andpatient(Mulder). There is so much depth to his personality, and withevery season it gets more interesting. The relationship between Patrickand his colleague Lisbon is strictly friendly and thankfully so.It isvery refreshing to see a relationship between two character (male andfemale) form so very slowly and strongly as the bond is growing deeperso that the audience can really feel and grow with them. those two inmy eyes are the best point of this show. Although there are many ''flaws'' to the show, some answers that areleft abruptly unanswered, some things that do not seem to holdtogether. As a whole i think this show is to be taken lightly, i thinkit is mostly about a very smart and interesting character who makes usfeel good and gives us hope that intelligence, patience and a goodheart can put to shame any villain; and it does it incredibly well.As a final word i thinks this is a feel good show centered around itscharacters , not the story.

Good show, great acting by Simon Baker

Just started watching the show on DVD. So far, its been relaxing andfun. The mysteries are not complex but how the team untangle them hasbeen fun. The chemistry between the main character and the CBI has beendeveloping at a good pace. Have not finished the first season yet but Ihave high hopes. Highly recommended for anyone who likes good mysteriesespecially the fans of Agatha Christie. Patrick Jane is like the modernday Hercule Poirot with a dark past. He brings a lot of baggage unlikePoirot and the insight he has into daily lives of women are like MissMarple. Additionally, the psychological torture he faces are similar toSherlock Homes even though not self-inflicted. I always loved mysteriesthat puts less emphasis on physical evidence and deals with humanemotions and the complexity of the criminal mind. The Mentalistcertainly does not disappoint on those categories.

Phenomenal, well-written show

The Mentalist is the story of Patrick Jane, an early-retired 'psychic,'who is now helping the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI) trackdown criminals. Jane, as he is usually called, is played by SimonBaker.Baker does an amazing job portraying Jane. He is quick to make a funnyand happy comment, yet it's still easy to see that the character isdisturbed by the events in his past, and what he is currently upagainst. The main villain, Red John as he calls himself, motivates Janeto stay on the cases he is given, for Patrick is certain that he canfind Red John and exact revenge for his murdered wife and child (asnoted in the first episode). The writing in the series is phenomenal. It is a well-paced show forthe most part. Some episodes may drag a bit, but there is always onething that will keep your attention on the screen. Jane's witty humourcreates a perfect atmosphere, especially when Lisbon (his boss) isinvolved. The two characters bicker constantly and it lightens the moodof the darkest of episodes. One honourable mention about the show is Jane's involvement in solvingthe crime. He always adds some spice to the situation, leaving everyonehanging until the last minute. Whether it's a note in the victim'spocket to the police or a forged letter given to the suspect, Jane hashis own unique way of fighting crime. The character leaves youwondering who the real baddie is. You want to follow Jane's every moveto see if you can figure it out before the end of the episode, which isa quick draw-in to the series.Overall I'll give The Mentalist an 8 out of 10. I love everything aboutthe show, despite some episodes that are somewhat drawn out. It's funnyand intense, and simply a joy to watch.

A Touch of Genius

The Mentalist is a detective crime show, although very unoriginalconsidering the amount of shows of the genre on TV at the moment, theMentalist is original to the fact that it involves many in-depthpsychological aspects. Before I delve into the shows Pros, I'm going tostart off with the cons. First of all, as my title states, the show is 'A Touch of Genius', andmaybe too much in fact for the series to gain casual viewers. In orderto understand the show completely, one must concentrate really hard onevery single component of the show, and not only on the psychologicalaspects. For example, if a character is chewing nicotine gum, then thatshould be taken into account for the rest of the show as it may be animportant clue to uncover the mystery of the crime. With that said, theseries seems very scripted, as every single action does not fall undernormal human instincts, but just another jigsaw to complete the puzzle. Another flaw within the show is that the Mentalist is portrayed as the'perfect' character, capable of doing almost everything singlehandedly, which undermines the good supporting work of the rest of thecast. Rather than the Mentalist (Simon Baker) being an expert inpsychological issues, he is also an expert in everything else, such ascrime scene investigation and so forth. The hypnosis aspect of theseries is also a flaw, as it is performed too many times and althoughbelievable, it brings amongst itself many sceptics as well as criticsof the idea (as well as boost the idea that the Mentalist is a perfectcharacter). Now onto the pros: simply put, the Mentalist is full of ideas andconcepts that makes the mind think, and whilst watching the show, Ifound myself completely engrossed in each investigation and incapableof taking my eyes off the screen as to not miss anything. To watch theshow, one must focus a lot of concentration into it which makes theviewer feel really involved. The acting itself is very 'feel good' andcredit to Simon Baker for his performance on that area. Even in adepressing scene, Simon Baker can manage to put a smile on the viewer, making it a very 'feel good' sort of series. The psychological aspectsof the show is brilliant as well, as I find many of them verybelievable and true to human psychology. And as I indicated earlier ofthe flaw that Simon Baker seems to be the 'perfect' character of theseries, it is often brilliant to see him 'outplayed' by othercharacters in individual episodes as it is a rare occasion, and when itdoes happen it is a great scene to be remembered (and so a flaw isdeveloped into a positive). In conclusion, the show is very clever in its line of work, and oftenvery amusing and 'feel good' but don't expect to become a fan of theshow if you're just aiming to watch it casually. It's possible peoplemay like it from watching casually, but its unlikely. One question that may pop into your head maybe: Why choose Mentalistother from all the other detective crime shows out there? Well afterwatching the first series, the show seems to show a lot of promise andpotential, and its scenes very interesting (even giving ideas to how tobecome a Mentalist yourself). The plot is basic, but I have yet to findanother crime show which delivers individual scenes with as muchexpertise as this show. The Mentalist is currently one of my favourite TV series.

Show lacks enough chemistry to be enticing, despite intriguing concept

One-time con man turned police "profiler"(the title is a more accuratedescript)Patrick Jane(Simon Baker, attractive Australian actor, returningto American TV some years after "The Guardian")is an ace at noticingALL elements of human behavior. His droll wit and sharper than sharpinstincts are both annoying and yet highly necessary for the policeforce of a California(?)beach community, and he's a particularbane/potential-love-match Det.Teresa Lisbon(Robin Tunney, alithe, wondrous beauty whose lack of facial expressions puts a severedent into her presence on the show),who is at once both a skepticalfoil and supportive advocate of Mr.Jane's presence on the force. Thus, the nutshell descritpion of ":The Mentalist",described by some asa variation on,among other shows,USA's "Psyche". Though I cannot claimexpertise on "Psych",what I DO know about it and what I've seen inabout five or so eps of this program, gives me the impression that whileboth shows are going for tongue-in-cheek crime drama solving, theycleave pretty dramatically on style, interpersonal dynamics and(mostnoticeably)tone. What I've seen of "Psych"(much of which,i'llconfess, comes from the ads)has impressed me with a comedic timing andgive-and-take quality that "Mentalist" just flat seems to lack. Bakeris handsome and charismatic, showing a lot of ease in the role, butpractically the entire rest of the cast seems to have one, maybe twonotes at best:caustic skepticism, with a small touch of reluctant awe.if it were just for Baker alone, this show would be perfectly fine, butit seems like the interplay with practically everyone else is soflat--coupled with the stock labyrinthine murder cases--that itreally,to me,lacks enticement to stay loyal.I will allow that this show, still in a relative nascent stage ofrun, may need time to crystallize in the department for which I justcriticized, but many shows plain simply DON'T get the chance to do justthat. It seems kind of strange(if not unfair)that this show, with goodpotential and intriguing albeit far-fetched premise, will get a longerrun than some to try and make this click. I may give this one anotherchance down the line, for that, but I'm not feeling too optimistic to behonest.

Great series, seems as if it was a mix between House and Sherlock Holmes.

The main character of the series, Patrick Jane, is a detective, andformer "mentalist", that uses his extremely high intellect and people-reading skills to help the police. While sometimes it may seem as Patrick is somewhat cheerful, he'scynical and tormented by his past. Years before joining the police, heworked as psychic, and used to make money by lying to his clients. Oneday though, he went on a talk show and made comments about a serialkiller, "Red John", but that enraged the man, which made him killPatrick's wife and daughter. After that, he decided to stop deceivingpeople and use his "powers" to arrest murderers.Simon Baker's acting is pretty good (and somewhat inspired by House),and the storyline is kinda like a lot of clichés glued together, but itactually fits. The supporting cast is pleasant and charismatic, andthere's a lot of chemistry between Simon Baker and Robin Tunney. Most of the episodes consists in a murder, some weird or controversialback story (as aliens or clowns) and Patrick using his skills to makepeople angry and reveal the truth. Most of the first or last episodesof the season is related to the main antagonist, Red John.Bottom Line: awesome series, with some minor flaws as some episodesbeing eventually dull.

Enjoyable Crime Solver

I really like the show and it's actors. It stars a man who had a careeracting as a psychic who was just pretending for the money. He made themistake of catching the attention of a serial killer who retaliated bykilling his family. He recovered from a breakdown and now works as aconsultant to help the bureau catch the "bad guy" by using those sameintuitive, observant skills and really listening to what people do anddon't say. Simon Baker plays quite a multifaceted character that goesfrom playful to serious, whichever is called for and does it very well. The Mentalist has a good blend of being neither too dark like CriminalMinds or too lightweight like Psych, shows which I also watch.

One of The best crime shows in Years

"The Mentalist" is one the best Detective shows if seen in years i putit up with "Crime scene Investigation" and a bit worse than "Law andorder" with "Patrick James" as our main protagonist who is a Played by"Simon Baker" who is a consultant for the CBI who uses Similar skillsas "Sherlock Holmes" to Solve his cases. The Supporting cast do give agood Performance not anything as good as "House Md" but they do give agood PerformanceNow onto the cases. The cases in The Mentalist are usually veryEnjoyable and they all make sense and you can usually guess who youthink it is and Most times will get it right. The problems with the show is that They make the CBI seem Kinda slow inthe case since Jane always gets it before them and they are Miles apartin know this is the Premise of the show but it does get annoying. The show is Probably one of the best Crime dramas right now and if youprefer things like Sherlock Holmes rather than Forensic science likeCSI Thats my First review so hope you enjoyed and could you please giveme feedback.

beckeye_58 29 April 2012

Mentalist is clever, engaging

The Mentalist, starring Simon Baker, is a clever twist on the standardprocedural. Baker plays Patrick Jane, a former "psychic", who left hislucrative career of conning people after his baiting of a serial killerleft his wife and child dead.Jane now works with the CBI (sort of like the FBI only for the state ofCalifornia) as a "consultant", which allows him to tag around with ateam of agents and use his powers of observation and manipulation tosolve crimes. His motives are twofold: to use his "powers" for good andto be there when the CBI finally cracks the case of "Red John", theserial killer who murdered his family. Each week, he rides to the rescue of the CBI team. If there is a faulton the show, it's that Patrick is always the one who comes through andthe CBI couldn't solve a single case without him. Kind of makes youwonder how they managed before he came along. There are the obligatoryskeptics and annoyed bosses who wish he'd just go away, but they can'targue with his success.Baker is the heart of the show. His engaging attitude and cleverrepartee are very pleasing to watch, and I'm sure it helps the ratingsthat he has an adorable head of tousled curly hair and a killer smile. The other characters play well against one another and are a departureon the common "types"...the rookie, the enforcer, the tough gal leader, the poker face. Each is tweaked in a way that makes you stay interestedin learning more about what lurks beneath the surface.A hint of romance between Patrick Jane and Lisbon, the head of theteam, adds to the intrigue...will they or won't they? All in all, anenjoyable hour worth Tivo.

ghost in the shell's laughing man -red john the mentalist

I don't watch the show but I did read about it in creative screenwriting and the had the picture of red john logo and the story behindit, talk about ripping of ghost in the shell's laughing man, even thelogo and plot are more or less the same, guess they are big anime fans.Okay it's not set in the future, not animated, so that is where itends, from what I have been told and read, you don't know who red johnis and knows hot the main lead, Mr Jane, works and his team and leadsthem on a merry dance until the very end when you will get to see john, just like the laughing man in ghost in the shell. Look forward to being right about this, but I was laughing hard overthis homage, good work to the writers for this one, it will beinteresting.

Amusing Lines

One thing that makes this series so enjoyable is the humour. Myfavourite 'funny' line was when Rigsby and Cho were tasked to questionsome teenagers. Rigsby said "I hate interviewing teenagers - it's liketalking to mud". How very true!Simon convinces as an American, because he is an Aussie! Taswegians(Tasmanians) don't have strong Aussie accents like others on themainland. Taswegians? Well, that is because mainland Aussies think ofthat 'little island' below the continent is foreign! One small niggle is that the series has got hung up on 'Red John'.Please move on fellas!

Similar premise to Psych. Psych = Comedy; Mentalist = Drama

"The Mentalist" is very similar to "Psych" in that the lead characteris trained to spot minute details, and through these observations hesolves crimes. Where Shawn Spencer of "Psych" pretends to be a psychicprivate investigator while assisting the Santa Barbara police, PatrickJane is a person who used to pretend to be a psychic (to achieve fameand wealth), but is now using his abilities as a private investigatorto help the police. His motivation for assisting the police is madeapparent in the pilot episode. It is from here that the two premises diverge. "Psych" uses its premiseto present a brilliant comedy where the interactions between thecharacters place the overall mystery and its solving in a secondaryrole (clues are highlighted on the screen to assist the viewer, forexample). "The Mentalist" goes in the direction of the CSI-type crimedrama. The story is serious and the clues are intentionally obscure forthe viewer. Perhaps the most humorous element of the pilot is theveiled reference to USA's Adrian Monk of "Monk." A crime sceneinvestigator with obvious anti-social behaviors wanders about the roommaking hand gestures while describing the minutia of the crime scene (ala Adrian Monk). Is "The Mentalist" a good series and worth watching? If you like crimedramas, then certainly. If you would like a dramatic interpretation of"Psych," then the show is for you. If you are angered by a showborrowing themes and premises from your favorite show, then probablynot. After all, Shawn Spencer is simply another character in a longlist of characters with exceptional observational abilities (SherlockHolmes and Columbo are but two which come to mind).

Simon Baker Carry's the Show

Excellent show, sometimes you kind of know who the culprit is but itsstill an amazing show... Patrick Jane aka Simon Baker is justincredible with his one liners and his wittiness... The whole Red JohnCase makes it more interesting and keeps you intrigued for more..The Chemistry between Rigsby and Van Pelt is just class.. Lisbon i findis kind of very week at times.. That's the only negative point that icould find.. she needs to be more dominating at times but is not..The whole show overall is decent and its Simon Baker's unbelievableacting and screen presence that carry's the show along..Overall i loved it and def watch it every week...
