in response to larajane's comment about Hugh Laurie's accent

Having lived most all of my life in New Jersey, I think Hugh Lauriecomes very close to the local dialect. People who are not from NewJersey are under the misconception that people from New Jersey allspeak like Tony Soprano, which is far from the truth. In fact, depending on the region and education, the New Jersey accent is veryflat, almost Midwestern. He has it down. I have been a fan of his sincehe was doing the Blackadder series, and knowing that he is British, Iam amazed that I don't detect a trace of his native tongue. As an addednote, he is finally sexy to me. Having played comedic upper-class twitsfor much of his career, his sex appeal was lacking, but now, wow! Iguess it took affecting an American accent, not shaving and behavinglike jerk for me to see how very sexy the man is. Which may saysomething about me, but so be it. Hugh Laurie is fabulous.

you cant always get what you want?

For all the high faluting medical jargon people complain about, howcould anyone not be entertained and charmed by House's witty banter?"It wouldn't hurt you to be wrong you know." House: "You don't care about these people?" I've seen 3 episodes of the first season so far, I wonder how the restof the series goes without tiring the formula of solving a peculiarmedical case each episode. Think of it as a whodunnit towards theantagonists to the health of each patient. And each patient has theirown individual story to tell too. Despite House's smugness, in the endhe, and his team of doctors are responsible for the restoration givenin each new case. The first episode, directed by Bryan Singer (AptPupil, the Usual Suspects) had some really eerie scenes and shots, butjust as funny as the rest of the 2 others I've seen.

New to it but I like it.

I am still only watching the 5th episode of the first season, but whatI've seen, so far, I like. Oh, and for those complaining about HughLaurie's American accent? It has to be good because I didn't know hewas from England until after I read about the show here on IMDb. Theaccent fooled me to where I couldn't believe he wasn't American atfirst. As for the show itself? It speaks to Hugh Laurie's portrayal of Dr.House that at first I didn't like the character, but he started to growon me. Like others, I can't wait to see what he'll say next. I alsolike that he bucks the system as if he knows better than thesystem...which he does as much as he doesn't. I wouldn't like it ifHouse was right all the time. All in all an excellent show.

Best Show Ever!

About ten or twelve episodes into the first season i switched on two arandom show called 'House'. I only got to watch the last ten minutes ofthe episode but from the moment I saw it I was HOOKED! Now I've got theDVD set and follow the new series religiously!!'House' is one of those rare jems of TV which come around once and awhile and you never forget when they're (god forbid) gone. The sarcasmand the cynical humour is fantastic! The arguments and quips from thefantastically acted cast are on the standard of West Wing. The casesare fantastic (even though a little far fetched as my med studentsister tells me but who cares! It's television!) and Hugh Laurie? Well,Laurie is absolutely freaking amazing. I loved him before this from thebuffoon in black-adder and even from his small appearance in Sense andSensibility but when i saw him in action I could not believe that hewas the same guy who got multiple concussions in 101 Dalmations. GoLaurie! But this is a fantastic show and there have been rumours that it maycontinue for five years (jesse Spencer-chase-has signed a contract)which I seriously hope are true. I have to say one last thing: Thankyou David Shore!!!!!!

Fine "medical detective" show

I'll admit that the main I reason I first watched this show was to seeHugh Laurie in a drama series. Besides his role in the film "Peter'sFriends", I mainly knew his work from his comedy roles in "Blackadder"and "Jeeves and Wooster". Now, having seen him in "House", I find thathe's a fine dramatic actor, as well. From previous reviews, you'll haveread that Laurie plays Dr. House, an ill-tempered, disabled yetbrilliant physician who doesn't like patients, but is challenged byunusual ailments. Aided by a small team of younger doctors, he tries tofigure out a correct diagnosis and treatment. In the meantime, he alsomust deal with patients that he is forced to see in the hospital'swalk-in clinic. As noted, Laurie's performance is very good; the earlytalk about an Emmy nomination for him is quite justified. The rest ofthe cast is also good, though the scripts have yet to fully examineeach character. (Viewers may remember Omar Epps from his earliermedical role as the ill-fated Gant on "ER".) The stories, while set upas brain-teasers, are also refreshingly complex about the doctors, thepatients and the hospital; they don't resort to the done-to-death"HMO's are the source of all evil" plot line. These doctors arebrilliant, but not perfect; mistakes are made. In the end, I hope thatFox will allow the show to continue. It's good to see an interestingmedical show on TV, now that "ER" has degenerated into a "tragedy ofthe week" soap opera. And, as for Hugh Laurie's accent, I've heardbetter, but I've heard a lot worse. Give him time. (In a recentepisode, he got to use his native English accent for a joke.) Oneimportant note: "House" is not for the squeamish. There are some prettygraphic and disturbing scenes in the series that some viewers may findupsetting. (For example, one episode featured critically ill infantsand pulled very few punches.)

My kind of show

Let me put it simply. I am a physician, and as an inviolable rule, IHATE medical shows. Granted, TV series tend to be one dimensional, dueto inherent difficulties in the genre, but "doctor shows" are somethingI avoid like the proverbial plague. And then one evening I caught "House, MD" and was completely drawn intothe show. In House I find the anti-hero that I've been waiting for in amedical show. The guy who knows everything, but is wrong often enoughto keep us all guessing. I enjoy the contrast of House and his cadre ofyoung fresh faced colleagues, complete with starched white lab coats, who struggle as much with their professionally imposed constraints, andsense of decorum, as they do with his personality. And, wonder ofwonders, the use of ironic and tragic comedy is without peer in whatI've seen in the TV world in recent memory. In a nutshell, I reallynever know what any given character will say or do and it's thatfreshness that will keep me coming back for more. Somewhere there is ateam of writers who actually know their craft, and an acting ensemblethat knows how to pull it off. Now I can watch my TV one hour aweek........

Absolutely fantastic and refreshing!!

I was very amused to see how all the earlier comments were extremelypositive while the latest comments were mostly negative. Have people'staste changed over the year? Perhaps the later shows have declined inquality? I'll have to find out myself as time goes by.Now for my contribution to this exciting new drama. Ever since Iaccidentally stumbled upon House, my Thursdays have never been thesame. Putting my absolute surprise to see Hugh Laurie in a serious roleaside, it's the way the plot unravels that makes me come back. What's different? Unlike practically every single drama episodes outthere, be it medical, comedy or otherwise - two or three storiesrunning in parallel, each involving two or three different members ofcasts to try and stop people from feeling bored with a linear story -House manages to tell a single story involving the entire cast withsuch success that almost seems impossible to achieve. Of course, thatsingle story itself is a roller coaster ride of mistakes andcorrections.Being involved in research myself, I'm familiar with making wrongassumptions only to find the next five experiments a real SherlockHolmes experience. To get there in the end, though, is what makes itall worthwhile, just as House always manages. I must say, there is acertain sense of relaxation in knowing that this brilliant doc will atthe end of the day prevail over the seemingly benign illness, despiteall the horrible symptoms presented by the patient and the difficultiesthat plague the junior docs and House himself. I'm not fond of peopledying for the sake of story or as a tacky attempt to draw some tears.Hugh Laurie pulls off one of the most refreshing characters on TVtoday. Quit moaning about his accent; it's far better than many Britsacting in Hollywood. Plus, he's strangely charismatic - I'd want him totreat me when I turn up with light cough masking a fatal illness. As heso aptly puts it, he's there to treat the illness, not the patient. I'mactually envious of House's only friend doc. The supporting docs alsowork very well around him and they all gel nicely into a coherent team, rather than like a rainbow coloured play-doughs forced into a ball. One day, like death itself, this formula - an anti-hero doc solving amulti-layered mystery illness - will wear off just as ER has nowcompletely lost my interest. Actually, I think it was when GeorgeClooney left that I began to drift away from ER. Not that I'm a greatGC fan, but it's just that one very strong, often the anti-hero,character really can make a difference between a must-see TV and anothing-else-on-so-leave-it-on TV. House, as the title indicates, isabsolutely at the heart of this program, and by being such a clever, rude, frank, brilliant doctor, he's making this drama stand out 50mahead of pretty much everything else. So until that inevitable dayarrives, all praises to Fox and Hugh Laurie et al.

horrible

This is one of those shows that you could watch one and know the entirestory. Hugh Laurie is awful in this (and he is actually English- notAmerican). Usually it's along these lines; someone will come in with amystery illness and house's staff will try to diagnose it. Then housewill say something like "no it's not cancer, you've got a severe caseof Influenza (while the whole time his staff will conflict hisopinion). But in the end, after usually almost killing them, house isright. This show will go off the air eventually, and fade fromeveryone's memory. The cop show phase is dying, this will too, but inthe end everyone has their opinion.

Horrible show

In this show Hugh Laurie plays the most annoying, despicable, uninteresting, hateful, irritating and the ugliest character ever sawin television.I never hated so much a fictional character before: House is easily oneof the worst characters ever made, I absolutely hated him. I simplycannot understand why people like so much him. This show is just not that good: Every single episode is the samething, all the episodes are boring, formulaic and predictable and allend in the same way (House was right, and the others were wrong) Thisshow is a complete waste of time. It is one of the worst shows evermade, along with "Family Guy" and "Mystery Science Teather 3000".

trblake 06 May 2012

Is house believable?

As a drama I rate it as a 4. As a informational series I rate it a 6.BUT! Dr House is a good Doctor because the character cares for thepatients. He is a good doctor because he takes drugs. He's a gooddoctor because he solves the problems he doesn't really want to dealwith. He's a good doctor because he bucks authority. He's a good doctorbecause the nurses respect him, his staff respects him. No, this isjust a typical hospital story set in some land where doctors only careabout making themselves look good in their own eyes.If the TV networks think they have created a true representation of themedical community in which there was a doctor like this one he would beon the street or better yet in jail, wasting their life tellingeveryone how good he was. Would someone really want to be treated bysomeone taking drugs to reduce their personal pain, not caring aboutthe one thing they have promised to do. Would you want to trust someonewho takes drugs on film for a living. Yes, that is what the networksthink we want to see. The TV network wants us to think this is somehowreal.I would rather be treated by Marcus Welby from the 1970's with noadvanced technology than by a truly uncaring and totally disconnectedperson. I lost my father to a physican who felt that technology wasbetter than feelings and carings. A physican that did not listen to myfather. Maybe this will help someone else deal with their loss, butthis is a Television medical show is turly lacking in any type of moralresponisibily. I myself was mistreated for a condition by a doctor whodid not want to take the time to perform any tests because of HMOissues.I do understand that the actor portraying Dr. House is well paid (inexcess of $50,000 per episode) to act in this manner and this is not areflection on his moral standards, but it is a reflection on what he iswilling to do for money. I would just like for the TV show to end in areal manner, with Dr. House and the entire staff being arrested and putin jail for life for the loss of their patients. That would truly be afitting end to this series.Sometimes, actors get more involved in their parts than they wish.

Hugh Laurie- One Funny & Annoying Addicted Doctor House

This is the top FOX series but the straw that stirs the drink is HughLaurie. He plays Dr. House with an enthusiasm that is biting withsarcasm. In fact, he has some very good support in the series, but hecarries the show on his back. It doesn't matter how absurd thesituation is - how House reacts is why you watch the show. The vieweris always wondering just what House will do next. Dr. House is the most annoying person on television since Peter Faulk'sLt. Columbo. In fact, Dr House wins my vote as being the most annoyingman on television. He annoys everyone including sometimes, himself. This is great character development. One hallmark of great TV shows this follows- it moves the maincharacters plot lines for more than one episode. This is the hallmarkof a great TV show. It keeps the viewers interested in how House'scharacter evolves as this is the main way this show hooks viewers.House is usually observant in deducing what is wrong with many casesquickly as a diagnostician. Because of the pain in his gimpy leg, he isalways in a pain-killing drug induced picture of reality. The drugscontribute to a warped view of reality he is seeing. House has a team of doctors to help him with severe cases. In manyepisodes, they are brain storming about what is going on in a difficultcase. House battles everybody in every episode. He battles his ownteam, Cuddy & her overzealous administration of the hospital, most ofthe patients he sees, & his own warped view of reality. This gives thisshow it's comic/dramatic edge. House always looks for cases when he feels something strange is goingon. He hates his mundane work & loves challenges. They brainstorm forpossible diagnosis of the patient House often stays above the casepondering while the team works on doing the tests & telling the patienteverything. What brings this off every week is the acting. Thecharacters are well drawn & the story lines are well written forcomedic & dramatic effect. In the extras from the first season, they mention script development. They basically take a dictionary of Medical Diseases & go out, find arare one & then take the script from there. The scripts do come offsounding smart & producing good drama which is the intention of theshow. Sometimes they try & base scripts on actually things whichhappened, but from what I have seen so far, the Doctor working closelywith the program leaves the real world out. Operations & procedures &tests which are not being properly done. Drugs are not controlled atall & always right next to the bed when a patient has a seizure.Doctors are very often with their patient when a dramatic thingshappen. This allows the show to make great drama & drama doesn't need amedical license. House is a show you watch to be entertained. In this way, it is atremendous success. I am always waiting for him to find anothercreative thing to do with his cane. The humor in this show is dark,House is always annoying & very tongue in cheek.

Serious, fun, clever, and funny all at the same time!

House MD is my favorite show on TV! It is serious , fun, clever, andfunny all at the same time. Also, there are tons of sub plotsthroughout the show. It's a really awesome show, you should try it out! Here are some reasons to watch it: There is always something new andexciting to watch, listen to and examine. One really unique thing aboutHouse MD is that you can watch it over and over and over and over andstill see neat, interesting things that you didn't notice the time youwatched. Another thing that is so cool about House MD is that it neverleaves you hanging at an inappropriate time. This is really goodbecause you don't need to worry about the plot getting all messed upfor you if you miss one week. Overall, it's the greatest thing ever tocome to television!

lambiepie-2 30 April 2012

Finally...innovation

This is the kind of program that will have two types of audiences:those that are totally upset that nothing really sexual, pretty orsoapy is going on here, and those who like a good medical drama thatfocuses on the medicine which isn't too sexy, pretty or soapy. I'm withthe latter group. And what I like the best? The up and down put-off attitude of thisdoctor who is not perfect in any way, very human and sadly, verybrilliant. So why is he in a "training hospital"? Ah, there is thebeauty of this series. This isn't your glossy, over set television fare. It's bare, it focuseson the medical, and yes it uses many of today's TV technical advancesto portray them. The central doctor in this series, Dr. House, has a few charges who arealso smart, young and cocky. This is good because they will learn muchfrom their assigned mentor who is flawed, moody and not very sociable -but a medical genius - and how hard it is to unlock that information sothese doctors in training can learn. And the Administration. There'snothing like the hospital administration (business) to interfere withthe medicine..and the egos.I love the failure rate given to many in this series: patients as wellas doctors. There are successes, but the failure rate is important aswell - because not everything in the medical profession has a happyending in 60 minutes..and not just because someone has to expire, butbecause of decisions, negligence, prejudice and much more.A hard show for some, but a true gem above the alternatives out there.

Absolutely Fabulous, Wonderful

My husband and I love this show. I is fantastic. The absolute best newshow I have seen since CSI. I highly recommend it! It has all the rightstuff a show should have. I just wish I would have watched from thebeginning. I started watching the week before las and I must say I willkeep right on watching. When this comes to DVD, I will be buying it!Even though I have only seen two episodes, I can follow along and thatis a major plus in a show. I also love the comedy. The humor is greatas well as the drama aspects. FOX definitely has some edgy programmingand for that they should be revered. Anyone who hasn't tuned in yetshould give this show at least one glance. I promise you will gethooked. It is that good!

chakaflange 28 April 2012

brilliant, and I rarely think that of a series.

I accidentally stumbled upon this show when I was bored on a Sundayevening and now I never miss an episode. Hugh Laurie is a very likablecharacter despite his attitude towards patients which 99% is warranted. In every episode I watch him and the other doctors try to diagnose whatseems to be an unfindable illness and never fail to enjoy it. I hopethis show goes on and on and I will never get bored of it. Nice to seeHugh Laurie show off his acting talents in another genre too.I can only hope that more people get to see House as right now in theUK it is only being shown on sky/cable TV.I'd happily give House 10/10 because it is flawless entertainment. Sothere!

Catalin H 28 April 2012

Breathtaking ! Amazing ! Hugh Laurie !

When I started watching House M.D., i thought it was just anotherdoctors movie. Then it hit me ! I really mean, it hit me! I saw acrippled doctor, wearing no doctor's robe, walking along a crowdedcorridor, using his cane as a weapon, complaining about some case withthe line that made me stick to this show up to it's fourth season (andhoping for more): "Cancer, she's gonna die, boring!". I was bewildered. Then I saw another episode, and another, and I couldn't stop watching.Just for Hugh Laurie I wish this show never ends. The humor, the irony, the sarcasm, the crew, the stories, the cases, the episodes, EVERYTHINGis entertaining, it's like you get glued to your seat and you keepwatching, absorbing every little word he says, admiring every joke thathe makes. And you know what keeps me coming back for more? The fact that he isunpredictable, it is just impossible to know what he is about to say, what he is about to do, to think. Don't expect a show with doctors thatscream "scalpel", "clear the room", and with a lot of blood. It is asmuch of a story about the cases as it is about the characters. If youare a person who loves the action, the adventure of the discovery, thethrill of the puzzle, or if you are a person who hates doctor shows buthas an excellent sense of humor (although just about everybody canlaugh when House responds to "You owe me some clinic hours" with "Andyou owe me a lap dance") you are the one this show is designed for. They are amazing, both the character and the actor. Hugh Laurie, youhave my entire respect !

still strongly going

this is the only TV series i have been watching online until game ofthrone come out i might sound a bit lonely if a man over 40 years oldsays he is a fan but i am. i love house and he's friends there isnothing even close to this series that i can compare it is just one ofa kind. i wished they made quality series as this all the time but as iseen what has been on TV not likely. there have been ups and downs onthis series lately what house have been going thru because of he's lovelife but from the ending of the series i reckon house will go back towhat he always being. saying that it was shame to see cuddy go but ithas to be done so be it. ahh and happy birthday to Hugh Laurie may he'ssuccess carry on another 100 episodes more i can't imagine a life without him lol

great programme ever on television before

i watched it and it amazed me that its a really good programme bestBritish actor of course Hugh Laurie my favourite actor and i like theteardrop what used to be in USA. what amazed me is hes very nasty andhe can be mean to Lisa but hes so got a great accent it is a reallygood type of medical drama i will looking forward to season 4 in thefuture. He does stuff like black-adder very funny just watched it todayand he was the best actor in that as well and hes getting on as well inhis late 40s ill say and he also been in a bit of fry and Laurie aswell and its a funny and extremely good and i haven't watched that foryears till i was little

bikerpaul68 25 April 2012

Unadulterated rubbish

I cannot believe that some reviewers claiming to be medical doctorshave praised this series. In just two episodes I have seen anexploratory laparotomy done for no reason at all, acute intermittentporphyria diagnosed by intramuscular injection of toxins (FOLLOWED byexamination of the urine!), junior medical staff being sent toillegally search a patient's house and doing a CAT scan themselves("wait, go back a bit - what was that?") ... all right, it's fiction, but in a medical drama we have the right to expect at least a littlecredibility.Hugh Laurie was excellent as a couple of bumbling dimwits in two seriesof Black Adder, but that seems to be the only character he can play. His acting in House is utterly unconvincing and limited to icy snarlsand snide wisecracks. Is the USA really so short of actors that theyhad to import Laurie to play this role? Of course, it could be thatevery self-respecting American actor turned it down, and who wouldblame them.

trile 25 April 2012

Hard Core Medics!

Ever thought what people who save lives really look like inside? DrGregory House will answer you that, and more. This is not usual boringclone TV drama you used to watch. This is not ER or Chicago Hopebecause in real life doctors are not that moralistic. This ain'tAnatomy either which is more like Beverly Hills in white coats mix up.Young doctors on Discovery crying after they failed to cure terminalcancer patient - untrue directed crap! House is real as far TV show canbe. Unique!Dr House will show how dark and repulsive main character can be, andstill can be a hero type. Maybe you won't like him, but that's becausehe is more like you and me and less unrealistic high moral TV icon.Hugh Laurie plays him with brilliance, and if there are complaintsabout him being English or about his English accent, know that he wasabout to be rejected by the producers because his American accent was'too perfect'.Other reason you should watch the show is because it is full of funnysituations of patients and their diseases, and the major/plot ones arereally something you (if you are not a medical worker) never heard of,or never thought it is still active in civilized areas. And you won'tget miracles either like in Chicago Hope when patient without left sideof his brain moves right hand and speaks fluently (which isimpossible).Other characters are perfectly written also. Everyone has his ownagenda and opinion which creates true professional conflicts, and as inreal life - no one wins.So in the end, you can watch three absolutely the same CSI shows, another bad clone of Seinfield or Friends or you can watch somethinggood!
