Meet Dexter Morgan. By day hes a blood spatter pattern expert for the Miami Metro police department. But by night - he takes on an entirely different persona serial killer. But Dexter isnt your average serial killer as he only kills people who fit a very prolific and precise moral code taught to him by his late father Harry (he didnt kill Harry, honest), and developed very thoroughly throughout each kill. While dealing with his daily activities and his boss, Sgt. Doakes, the one man who may or may not know the truth about his after-hours activities, he is given a friendly message by a guy referred to only as The Ice Truck Killer - a crime scene where there is no blood. This shocking discovery turns Dexters world completely upside down. The Ice Truck Killer wants Dexter to play his game and Dexter is very eager to take on this cat-and-mouse chase throughout Miami.

In one episode, Dexter erased some evidences that could link him to oneof his victim. And we then discover that he also uses a pseudonym inorder to commend certain products, that are necessary to his criminalactions : Dexter is also known as Patric Bateman ! And it's true that"Dexter" as a lot to share with the universe of Brett Easton Ellis, theauthor of "American Psycho". The character suffers from a totaldetachment from his emotions, that gives him the feeling to be an emptyshell, to always have to pretend to be human, when his absence ofhumanity is hidden by a superficial social mask. That's maybe thegreatest part of the show, to be the reflexion of such a monstrouscharacters' interiority. It's too bad that it too often takes the shapeof a more conventional cop drama.SEASON 1. Rules of Attractions. The strange universe, all in perversion and detachment of Dexter isbrilliantly introduced by the first episode. It began crudely by aviolent murder, and the off-voice of the killer-narrator teaches usthat he's also a blood expert, for the Miami Police department. Like acrazy vigilante, Dexter is a cop the day, and a murderer ofserial-killer at night (sound stupid like that, but I assure it's avery mature show), and a monster (it's a metaphor, once again : it's anadult show) who tries to be a human the rest of the time (with hisgirlfriend or his sister). The character and the all bizarre atmosphereof Miami is really delectable in the first episodes, but those of themiddle of the season become more and more conventional, by trying todevelop the other cop's characters. Fortunatly, the last four episodes, more and more centered on "The ice-truck-killer" story, which definedthe unity of the arc this first season tells, put dexter's personalityand tortured past first again, and the all thing becomes passionatingagain. Let's hope that the second season stays as original and cynicalas its main character.(To be continued...)

This show is truly one of the best on TV with an exceptionally talentedcast and excellent writing. Each week as the story unfolds we learnmore about everyone, and the characters are fleshed out into threedimensional people that we don't see on many shows. This week we saw asofter side of the lieutenant, which was touching. But a few episodesago there was a wonderful scene with Angel, played by the remarkableand handsome David Zayas, and his family at home. It was a very humanmoment in a show that is very violent and can be almost inhuman. It'swonderful to see this talented actor in role worthy of his ability. This show keeps getting better, and I'm thrilled it got picked for asecond season.

This show is different, very so!This is a scenario I have often wondered about, when the good guys takethe law into their own hands to the full extent and not in a heroicglamorous way, as they do in the Hollywood-movies. This show is aboutexactly that, a man that has no normal feelings or bonds to speak oftowards other human beings what so ever, and slaughters the bad guysjust as brutally, as they do their own victims. And each time he comesacross a murder that has been done in a neat way or with an unusualmethod, he starts to admire the murderer. A bit sick, but when you keepin mind that his goal is to eventually catch the guy and dispose ofhim, despite the admiration, it sort of sits OK with you. And the factthat it's all done in a dark-humorous way just makes it even moreenjoyable. For example, his boss is always making a pass at him and allhe can think is:"..I wish she would stop that, it's one of those human emotion-ritualsI don't understand.." This is one of those shows that you can't wait to see more of!

I don't see any comments about Jonny Lee Miller performance as JordanChase (Eugene Greer) but I can not get over his American accent. BeingBritish, this is as good as it gets.Peter Weller did an amazing job as Liddy, I am glad they gave him thechance to show his versatility, the poor guy is only famous forRobocop! He really convinced as a dirty cop, tough and merciless to gethis position back. And by the way, I had never seen Jonny Lee Miller playing a bad guy,but he did a fine job as well. Sober, restraint, repressed and verymean, dominating others to do what he didn't have the courage to do.

After seeing the pilot it is clear that the writing is bad. Voice oversare hard and these writers don't have the chops for it. Just listeningto this show makes me want to carve out my ear drums. I adore Mike Halland loved Six Feet Under, but that was compelling, well-crafted drama. This show is just empirically bad. Dexter needs to shut up and stoptrying to be profound about his life like a 14 year-old angst-riddenpoet. Let us learn about Dex by what happens on screen--not god-awful,campy voice overs.Interesting premise, poorly written screenplays. Maybe I'll try thebooks.

I missed the 1st season and so sad that I did. This show is amazingwith twists and turns. It keeps you on the edge of your seat as youempathize with the dark mind of Dexter. A serial killer that only killsthe bad guys. What more could you want? The cast is superb. If you wantmore from a series than mindless entertainment then just sit back andwatch and THINK. This show is one of the best since "Dead Like Me"(which is sadly missed). I am a huge fan and highly recommend Dexter toanyone who just wants more. If you do not subscribe to Show Time youreally should just to watch Dexter. The opening credits are thecreepiest I have ever seen. Once you start to watch you just can't stopand just wait for another episode. One of the most disturbing sceneswas the shot of all the body bags in the ocean where Dexter disposed ofhis victims. VERY EERIE! I could go on and on but why? JUST WATCH!

This show is about a serial killer, that kills serial killers. He livesby a code, and as such the people he kills must be worthy of killing.Killing the innocent would break his code. Dexter is a M.E. that killsserial killers he investigates. During the day he helps track killers, and night he kills them. This show is a labyrinth of psychology behindkillers and what it would take to be a killer yourself yet still one ofmorality.Morality- in this sense means doing what you deem the correct action. In this case the character Dexter is a moral character, just a littletwisted. At the same time, you might wonder whether he feels anythingor not. It seems that he does yet also not. It is a very interestingshow and any Showtime subscribers should not miss it. If you likeanything like CSI, this is CSI on crack. This is like "Crossing Jordan"if it were a good show.

I was hesitant about this show in the beginning, since I'd read thatDexter was someone who killed animals (and that is something I CANNOTforgive under ANY circumstances). However, the premise for the showintrigued me. So I checked it out. While it's true that Young Dexterdisplayed the typical signs of a future serial killer (ie. killinganimals), at least we didn't have to *see* any of it. What we saw AdultDexter killing were nogoodniks who deserved what they got. This is whyI was able to like his character: because he was putting his addictionfor killing to a more "noble" use than just because he enjoyed it. Iknow he doesn't kill simply to save people. He didn't set out to be anysort of "hero", but whether he wants to be or not, he's doing a servicemany people would be grateful to him for. It's funny, at the end ofSeason 1, I felt the ending (with Dexter daydreaming about everyonecheering him on and congratulating him, etc for what he'd done) was abit out of place on the show. However, after a while, I grew toappreciate that ending more, as it was something Dexter would no doubtdream about. It suddenly made sense to me and felt 'right' in thecontext of the show). As far as the other characters go, I grew to like Deb pretty quickly inSeason 1 and, by Season 2, she'd become one of my favourite charactersin the series (along with Dexter). I know people have their issues withher, but I just...don't. I agree with the majority of what shedoes/says (plus, she's often amusing). I love her and Dexter'sinteractions, and the two actors who portray them have great siblingchemistry. She's definitely the best female character on the show. Asfor Rita, she doesn't really annoy me too much (except when she seemsto take Dexter for granted and just uses him at her own convenience).Considering what she went through with her ex, I can sympathise withher (although it doesn't excuse EVERYTHING she does/says, it certainlyexplains why she reacts the way she does in certain situations). Angelis the most 'normal' character in the show, and although he wasn'treally that interesting to me in the beginning, he's become morelikable as the seasons have progressed. LaGuerta is...okay. I'm neitherhere nor there when it comes to her. Her storyline was the most boringaspect of Season 2, so I was glad when it got wrapped up midwaythrough. I actually didn't mind Lundy, and actually liked his storylinewith Deb (however weird it might have been). As for Doakes...well...what can I say? He was easily the mostunlikeable character on the show from the get-go and remained so untilthe end of Season 2. Strangely enough, it wasn't until he was beingheld captive by Dexter that Doakes became tolerable for me. What ashame it took so long for us to see that Doakes (and the actor playinghim) could act like a human being/not be so one-note. Of course, thenLila had to take him out...and I was grateful for that. Speaking ofLila, I felt she added some much-needed spice to the show in Season 2.Yes, I know she was hated by a not-small percentage of viewers, but Ithought she had an interesting role. Hers and Dexter'sscenes/conversations together were part of what made Season 2 so great. She brought out these sides to Dexter (and his inner feelings) that wewouldn't have seen otherwise. If nothing else, she served a usefulpurpose in Season 2. What I really appreciated was the way they wrappedup her character. That final meeting between her and Dex wasgreat/fitting.I must say, I think Season 2 was just about as good as Season 1 (maybeeven a little better). Sadly, I think Season 3 dipped in quality a bitfrom the first two seasons. The best aspect of Season 3 was Jimmy Smitsas Miguel Prado and the "friendship" he developed with Dexter.Michael C. Hall is someone who I haven't seen in anything else, but itgoes without saying that he owns the role of Dexter Morgan. While Iknow that the series is based on novels, I also am aware that the showhas veered off from the books quite a bit, and I've read comments thatthe show is actually "better" - which is something you rarely hear.Usually it's the original source material that's most beloved by fans, but reading that fans of the books not only love the show/think it hasdone the books justice, but also has *surpassed* them as well, is veryencouraging to hear. The opening credits get special mention for how highlyappropriate/relevant to the show they are. I love all the details.Dexter going about his daily morning routine, doing seemingly mundanethings, but them being presented/shot in extremely sinister/disturbingways is *so* perfect. Every single thing we see in the opening creditscan be related to what Dexter does (in regards to his killings). Allthe preparing of food, and even something as simple as him gettingdressed, takes on a whole new meaning when you watch them. Like Dexterhimself, there's two sides to what's going on in those opening credits:the normal, everyday routine, and then the darker, more disturbingside. To top it all off, the show's theme is one of the BEST themes fora show ever. It is so twisted, and yet so catchy. I love it. Iappreciate shows that can put actual thought into something likeopening credits (whereas so many other shows could care less aboutthem). This is a dark but quite brilliant series that is definitely worth yourtime.

This is by far one of the most original TV-series I've seen. A serialkiller with a forensic job, filling in the flaws of justice as a finaljudge. At first I was a bit skeptic about the whole approach and didn't knowwhat to expect. Before actually watching, I thought it would be placedas on old fashioned horror thing, which I dislike in general. A friendconvinced me a few times to give it a try. When I began viewing thefirst chapter, I thought this would be a dramatic, long lasting series. However at the end of that chapter I was ready for more.Don't think of Dexter as a CSI whatever approach! It's far morecomplex, in a good way! Nice storytelling, good acting, a thrillerapproach which keeps you at the point of your chair. There are somenice plots that don't turn out as some sort of cliché or unrealisticapproach to keep things going, which are hard to find these days. WhenI gave it a spin, I never stopped and watched all episodes. Each seasonkeeps getting better, which is very rare...You can think of "Dexter" as a no-nonsense, realistic thriller series. In general it's very interesting to see how you can get involved andcreate sympathy with a character that actually is nor bad nor evil.Actually Dexter, could be your best friend or next door neighborwithout knowing... Even now, after watching all chapters to date, Idon't know whether I would really describe him as a "bad man". If youcan get this kind of feeling for a "murderer", this show must be good!tip: If possible, watch all seasons on a regular base andchronological, this will increase the impact. (but should be consideredfor every series).

Dexter is not like other cop shows, It gives different view and sight. It's about a blood splatter analysis who happens to be a serial killer.Every time I watch this show, I can't wait to see the next one. Itmakes you guess what might happen in the next episode. It's reallyinteresting to see how he grew up and taught by his stepfather and howhe hidden his emotion and personal matters from the world. He try to besomeone else to cover his dark secret from everyone. There are only few shows that worth watching, one of them is Dexter. Itgives you a taste of addiction every time you watch it. Not a lot ofshows give you that feeling. Over all, great Writing and Casts!

"Six Feet Under" was a class act from pliot to finale. And the way the series ended, AWESOME!!! Claire driving to NYC wasworth the subscription.Someone should take a lesson from it like David Ch--- Now he's thelovable serial killer. He juggles his daytime "fighting crime" persona with his "avenging Sonof Sam" agenda. Superb. I watched every episode trying to find out whois killing these women. His detached emotional portrayal of his character is amazing.I can't wait for Season Two.

BLOOD SPATTER Step into Dexter's showtime world Miami Florida, FatherSon Serial Killer with a Heart of Gold who kills other Serial Killerswho have the wrong Conscience. Jeff Lindsay's Novel (Darkly DreamingDexter) & other sequels to the debt story book. is slightly differentto the TV series. I prefer watching the TV SHOW, the book is great, butit ain't TV. anyhow. Michael C. Hall plays the Character fantastically. Jennifer Carpenterplays his sister Deborah Morgan who over and over Drops the F bomb withstyle. James Remar as Harry Morgan Father of the two Morgan siblings. Masuka Vincent Masuka is Miami Metro Police lead forensics whoinvestigates and works alongside Dexter at crime scenes plus in theforensics lab. There is indeed some comedy in his Character, you'llhave to watch the SHOW to know what I am talking about.Angel Batista is a detective in Miami Metro Police Department'sHomicide Division. Dexter is hilarious; it is easily the best new show on TV! Dark, dryhumor crops up in the most unexpected places, and the settings anddialogue are laced with CSI's pseudo-scientific appeal. While the showmay appear to treat standard morality as irreverent, it is actually anexcellent study of humanity at its best -- and worse. The character of Dexter, a disassociated, psychopathic serial killer,is somewhat reminiscent of Data, the android in the Star Trek series.Dexter is devoid of normal, human emotion, and has to learn behaviorsby rote. Seeing the world through his eyes enables us to closelyexamine what is "right" and what is "wrong." We have to pause andwonder about our own perception of reality.Overall, the show is a side-splitting outlet for the vigilante/serialkiller/dysfunctional being in all of us. Well done!

I used to watch "Six Feet Under" and I am still mourning its loss afterHBO nixed it after five seasons. Then when I heard that Michael C. Hallwas set to play the title role of "Dexter" I was intrigued: a forensicexpert who is also a dangerous serial killer. WOW! I ordered Showtimeon Demand, etc. and I am now hooked! One of the best shows ontelevision besides Heroes, Lost, 24, and Weeds. Michael C. Hall plays Dexter Morgan, a forensic and "blood splatter"expert for the Miami Police Department. By day he helps solves crimesand by night he stalks and kills individuals who are just as dangerousas he is or worse. Dexter was adopted by Harry Morgan (James Remar), adecorated police officer, who was the first and the only one toidentify Dexter's sociopathic nature. Harry disciplines Dexter intosuccumbing into his urges by only going after those that are just asdangerous as he is, or those that have escaped justice rather thanDexter going after innocent people. In between solving crimes alongside his adopted sister, Debra (Jennifer Carpenter, a total change fromThe Exorcism of Emily Rose), who is also a police detective andspending quiet evenings and weekends with his girlfriend, Rita (JulieBenz, who is rather lovely in this role and well suited), a singlemother and victim of an abusive ex-husband, Dexter is also killing.Wonderful characters surround him: Sergeant Doakes (Erik King) is theonly one in the whole series that senses that something is not rightwith Dexter at all; Lt. Maria Laguerta (Lauren Velez), who is obviouslyattracted to Dexter; Vince Masuka (C.S. Lee, who is hilarious!),Dexter's forensic sidekick; and of course Detective Angel Batista,(Andre Zayas). This show is so amazing and incredibly addicting;Smartly written and beautifully acted led by Michael C. Hall, who iswithout question an actor that is severely underrated and worthy ofmore attention; He is so daring in his choice of roles and does notever fall into clichés. He presents Dexter as a character that we bothare frightened, sympathize, and identify with. Michael C. Hall alsoreminds us through his performance and delivery that Dexter is notBatman; Dexter is a monster; The only difference that distinguishesDexter from other serial killers is that he is disciplined. The pilotepisode says it all when he kills a pedophilic killer: "I havestandards." This performance is a total 180 from the departed gayfuneral director, David Fisher, of "Six Feet Under." The cast is alsoexemplary: Jennifer Carpenter is strong as Dexter's ambitious sister;Julie Benz is lovely and vulnerable as Dexter's damaged girlfriend(they have really wonderful scenes together; he could be killingsomeone and he answers her phone call pleasantly like a real boyfriendwould; James Remar is also excellent in flashbacks as Dexter's adoptedfather. Without question Showtime is about to put HBO out of thespotlight with this show and it's comedy "Weeds" and "Sleeper Cell."GO SHOWTIME!!!!

The writing is very good. Michael C. Hall creates a brilliant characterwhich is quite dark and a nice change from his Six Feet Undercharacter. The mystery and suspense are played well and while theunderlying story behind Dexter and his nemesis is not terribly hard tofigure out, the show remains great entertainment. The flashbacks makean interesting back story for the show.Clearly this show can do more given the opportunity. The Lieutenent hasan opening to get justice. Dexter's sister has a lot of needed therapy. The door is now open for Dexter's girlfriend to look behind the curtainand now Dexter will have to be even more careful in the execution ofhis "code." I seriously hope another season is planned.

Dexter is one of those shows that most people have never heard of, butfor the people that have heard of it, it is the top show on theirradar. I read the books on the show and thought that they were prettygood, but when watching the show (and i do watch it religiously, everyepisode) i was simply blown away. Every actor is perfect andbelievable, and Hall plays Dexter with the exact amount of subtletythat is needed. After watching show you have a need to keep watchingit, and after every season you feel 100% percent satisfied that it hasgiven you the full experience, i love this show and i hope they keepmaking new seasons. If you watch the first episode and don't reallyenjoy it, just watch the next couple, once you get into it, you wont beable to tear your eyes away.
BlackSheep333 24 April 2012
Let me start off by saying that i have been a huge fan of Michael C.Hall since Six Feet Under (which is also one of my favorite showsever), hes awesome. As each season of Dexter comes around, the acting gets better, thestory gets better, the production values get better, the show as awhole just keeps getting better. This new season is easily the best ofthe series. Without giving anything away, the characters are beingshown in a different light where as the other seasons (although stillgreat) they mostly just had Dex kill someone at the end of each episodeand that would be it. In this new season we get more insight on everycharacter and get to know the bad guys a little better before they meettheir end. If you don't have Showtime, i would recommend getting itjust for this show its totally worth. Support Dexter!

You read the plot and being so judgmental would say that never worksfor me. How could I possibly get into such a theme? And maybe youinsist on it during the few first episodes as well. But by then you'vecaught on the dark comedy of this show and without caring much for theanti-hero, you follow it with a big grin on your face while sittingback, be it for the sake of the irony of the situation or the wittynarration of Michael Hall. After a few episodes however, you realize you're sitting on the edge ofyour seat. Lo and behold, you're there. Congratulations! It'sfrightening how you've started caring about this sweet serial killerwith that soothing voice and witty narration.Perhaps Dexter is a huge leap in neo-noir genre, since here the shadowyand dark persona only is carried through the narration, while we enjoya colorful cinematography. And it works even better with this hugecontrast between shadowy self and brilliant colors of the set.Engaging, brilliant and easily the best series I've ever seen. 10/10

The complexity of the character Dexter draws viewers into this crimedrama. It is strange to find a serial killer so endearing andidentifiable. Michael C. Hall does an amazing acting job, playing boththe part of serial killer Dexter and acting normal Dexter. I applaudhis performance. Dexter's relationships with the contrasting outsideworld create the story, particularly the relationships with his sisterand girlfriend. He has problems opening up with his sister, his onlysurviving relative, as well as difficulty forming a romanticrelationship with another woman, Rita. Comedy is what brings all theelements together to form a complete story and excellent series. Itreally brings the basis of morality into question - is it wrong to killthe bad guys?
