Steal this review

Just viewed Another Earth which I chose in all innocence, not knowing athing about it except a bit of information from a description thatintrigued me. I chose wisely. Hopefully you are reading these commentsafter you have viewed the film. While reviewers here are, for the mostpart, on the money, and aren't overly expository, this is a story thatis, above all, honest. Many years ago, I read a NY Times magazine article discussing thetalent of actress Glenda Jackson, in which the comment was made thatshe, like any great actor, is honest in her expression. I've learnedtwo things about acting: The first is that acting is not pretending, iscertainly not lying. Then that each of us is an actor, just perhaps notas professional or expert at it as some. But we act every day, weexpress ourselves, we connect, we experience. It really is much lesscomplex than one might think.I highly recommend reading co-writer/star Brit Marling's biography athttp://www.imdb.com/name/nm1779870/bio. My sense is that she isprimarily responsible for the story, and that director Cahill enhancedthe project by contributing his filmmaking talents. A quote from theactress on IMDb: On why she decided to become a screenwriter inrelation to her being an actress -- "How terrifying to surrender yourlife to being chosen all the time. Having to be chosen and re-chosen.Writing so that I can act became a way of having not more control overmy future but not having to wait for permission. You can chooseyourself." There's the honesty. I'm all I have, but that connects me toeverything.I do not appreciate only two comments from reviewers: Thecinematography is just right. Home movie style (or more professionalwhen appropriate. Film is eclectic, and this is most amazing when itworks, for story is always most important, and to have so many tools atthe fingertips to share a story does provide a challenge. Actually, thetruth is that two of my favorite directors began as cinematographers:Peter Weir and Nicolas Roeg (I find it curious that they're bothAustralian, but then it seems that all of the world's most popularreligions originated in desert-like environments).I too was wondering how the two-earth thing might be handled, especially since I have a long-term interest in physics, havephotographed what anyone might call "ghosts," and have had experiencesthat, if shared, might cause anyone to label me as "nutso," "crazy," orsimply "bananas." Then two thoughts occurred: One is that physics couldbe responsible for helping us human beings to learn more about how tobe more human, and know more about why we even conceived of gods.Second to this, and more important for this film, is that no matter howbig or small the earth-2 is in various shots, it's just like real life--- we use our personal filters to view the world, and now we areexperiencing another's filters, that is, becoming involved in theirstory. The lack of fleshed out physics serves only to highlight thequite honest performances, the heart of the story. In any case, thescience serves to support one of, for me, the truths of life: Life is adialog, and the participants are, of course, you and your experiencesand, of course, all those human beings in your life and, of course, themystery. If you think about it (not too hard) we really don't want an ending tothe story. One of the achievements of this film (and I think this isBrit Marling's contribution) is the great tension created, like in thebest adventure stories that, in the end, are not so much resolved asgiven new life. We are given permission to own it. The rest is up toeach of us.Greg McCormick Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

If you're adamant on watching this beauty, then I advise you, NOT to watch the trailer

With 2 wins at the Sundance Film Festival early this year theindependent movie ANOTHER EARTH shares a message that allows the viewerto connect with its themes in many angles. The speculation of what itwould be for one to encounter one's self seems to be at the source ofthe concept for ANOTHER EARTH. Although this concept is not asinventive as the media suggests; if we closely look into movies likeTHE TRUE-MAN SHOW, IDENTITY or even the TV show ONE TREE HILL it'squite obvious the themes of denial, acceptance and redemption arediscussed. The only difference I see is that the genres are entirelydifferent and that Mike Cahill and his team may have hit the jackpotwith the symbolism of Earth 2. Rhoda (Brit Marling) is selected to MIT and parties like a nun on a lowscale nerd party. Couple of drinks and Rhoda clearly has had one toomany when she drives right into John Burroughs (William Mapother) sedankilling his wife and son instantaneously. The moment Rhoda wasdistracted by the news broadcast of the appearance of a blue planet inthe sky I for sure predicted that she would crash into someone orsomething. As predicted she does. Rhoda who serves a sentence of 4years is released only to end up as a janitor at a local high school. She clearly has issues of getting over the guilt of the wrong she hascaused. All she wants is to simply set the record straight. With thehopes of forgiveness and there in seeking redemption she walks up tothe door step of John. Instead of acceptance she moves into a mentalstate of denial the moment she sets eyes on the wreck (John) andmasquerades thereon as a girl from a cleaning (Maid in Haven) serviceand explains to John that they are conducting a free trial. John who isquite gullible given the circumstances accepts her and the freecleaning trial. One look at the state the house and it's obvious itneeded cleaning. Rhoda who approached for a one time meeting only endsup cleaning his house on a weekly basis. When will the rightopportunity rise and how John will react when he finds that Rhoda isresponsible for his families' death? The question I would like to ask you is; if you repent and regret andcome clean for the murder of 2 innocent lives, do you deserveforgiveness and redemption? Would you be able to forgive someone whohas taken away your loved ones from you? William Mapother; who is more known as Ethan from LOST is simplyamazing. The pace at which he develops his character and the attentionto details given by Mike Cahill to his surroundings is very convincing.Mapother indeed looked the man who has nothing to live for and who hasno desire nor hope for a better tomorrow. However when the charactersees hope in the forms of Brit Marling, his character rises back fromthe ashes and stands firm with hope. As for co-writer and star of themovie Brit Marling it's an average performance. The Elephant in the room; do I ignore it for the sake of cinema?Co-Writers Marling and Cahill seems to not have considered thelogistics of another planet so close to ours. This is the beauty ofcinema. Anything is possible and anything will be accepted. For thoseof you readers who harp on the realism of such an occurrence clearlywill not embrace the scripts effort. Its cinema and we need to take achill pill and let this one go. I mean after all if we can accept thatOptimus Prime exists, we surely can allow a planet larger than the moonto be right beside us and not do us any harm. We can? Yes I think wecan and we should. The Bone I need to pick:The advertising campaign; in one word SKYLINE!Indie movies should never lose its focus by falsely promoting a simplymisleading plot in the trailer. It is only fair that the whole movie isfirst understood as a sci-fi. I for one never expected this to be thedrama it turned out to be. Indie movies are done with those withpassion, those who pursue dreams and these movies inspire us more thanbillion dollar productions like FAST 5 or X MEN: FIRST CLASS. Thesemovies show us that if our heart is in the right place, we can achievewhat we desire. I am and I have been strictly against falseadvertising. It's the brand name that would suffer in the long run. Some may like it and some may not. I throw this next question at you. What is harder to forget; the gooddeeds one does or the bad deeds one does? I am not at liberty to judgethis for Another Earth. However I am at liberty to say that I for onewill always tag ANOTHER EARTH with a hint of disappointment. If you're adamant on watching this beauty, then I advise you, NOT towatch the trailer. If you don't you will be marveled within the painfulworld of John and you will be lost in the beauty of seeing thecinematography Earth 2. It looks like a screensaver! This indeed isbeautiful story. Another Earth/Another You - So What

Would anyone really want to spend the day with himself/herself ifhe/she found there was a planet that contained an identical self foreach of us? "Uh, remember in 5th grade when I-you-we..." "Yep, Iremember, I was there too..." Who cares. Interesting premise, but Ithink most people would be bored of themselves pretty quickly; evenidentical twins/triplets/quads aren't that similar. And everyone wouldalways suspect everyone else of playing "switch-a-roo" tricks onothers. The movie asks a lot of questions, and the audience fills in its' ownanswers - that's weak writing. And what is the John Burroughs character going to do on "Earth 2"? Ishe going to find his other self with his wife and children, and say,"Uh, I know it's not your fault that a drunk-driving ditsy-ding-batslaughtered my family on Earth, but, uh, I want to take your place uphere on Earth 2 so I can be with my family again...uh..." ?The acting was a bit stiff throughout, but it wasn't terrible. BritMarling as "Rhoda Williams" was perfect as a sort of gawky "Olive Oil"with a pretty face; she played an "outsider" really well. I never feltbad for the "Rhoda Williams" character, but I could not take my eyesoff of her either. It's a very moody, atmospheric film of littleconsequence.

It is a good drama- sci fi is the after though

OK this was a RedBox rental and I'd hardly heard of anyone involved init so we rented it with no expectations other than my husband clearlythinking I'd rented another set of weird movies. We watched this the same night as The Future so that bar was quite lowafter that. The characters are believable but their actions at times not always somuch. I can't see the two main characters hooking up as they did andtheir chemistry was good but not of a sexual nature. The way Rhoda tries to make up her crime of killing his family in ateenage drunk driving incident is in many ways understandable... butgoes beyond the scope of reason. The ending sort of redeems the movie at the end when you realize Rhodahas given up yet another one of her dreams (after missing out on herMIT education and what might have followed due to jail) and not takingthe trip to the Other Earth. What is going on when she sees herself at the end is rather confusingand didn't close the movie with me.All in all I found it thought provoking but my more mainstream husbandthought it was stupid. You decide.

Tell me: Did they or didn't they?

I had already read that the second Earth wasn't really an importantpart of the story. And since it was an implausible/nay, impossibleoccurrence I focused on the journey Rhoda took to deal with her guilt. That led to a love story. What a nice story that was--John slowlycoming out of the alcoholic coma to notice his cleaning girl has brainsand charm. And she comes out of her depression as she becomes hisfriend. But this immediately becomes problematic as John is now fallingfor her and she happens to be living a lie: she killed his wife and kidand a fetus. If she doesn't tell him she's going to bring him even MOREpain! Around that time he plays the saw for her (great scene) and thenlater they kiss. I watched to see if sex was involved and I don't thinkthere was. If there was sex she clearly wronged him. He'd never haveagreed to unknowingly fornicate with the killer of his family. If shereally liked him, (which I think she did) she wouldn't have let him doit. To make love with him would have been a huge lie. Then I find that half my movie group thought they DID make love. Ifthat's true I lose about half my admiration for her. And since there'sdoubt, it becomes a flaw in the movie. Why don't directors make itclear when people make love and when they don't? I liked the ending . .. . the one where their non-consummated friendship is furthered by hergiving him her ticket. She's saying she wants him to be happy and she'sopen to finding happiness on this earth.

Depressing, sad and haunting and still beautiful at the same time.

Starring:Brit Marling, William Mapother, Jordan Baker, Robin Lord Taylor, FlintBeverage, Kumar Pallana and Richard Berendzen.Directed By:Mike Cahill.Review:There are movies that may not seems so good when you watch the firsttrailer of it, they don't impress you or seems like watchable. But whenyou do, some of them just blows your mind like Another Earth. Thismovie reminded me of that small sci fi movie Monsters, which once againwas good. Another Earth came across as a movie with superb imaginationand a work of art. I was impressed, mesmerized and just superblyabsorbed in the movie it instantly connected with me. Now this is not ascience fiction or visual effects driven movie at all but that aspectis used metaphorically to help the story, and it does help it verymuch. This movie is about a girl named Rhoda Williams played by thenewcomer Brit Marling, she is a high school student recently acceptedto MIT, while driving to her home after celebration drunk, she listenson radio the news about a similar planet like Earth to be visible inthe sky. As she looks out of her car window to take a look at the newplanet, she slams her car with a stopped car. John Burroughs played byWilliam Mapother goes into coma and his child and wife dies there.Being a minor her identity is not revealed and she serves her prisonsentence. When Rhoda finished her prison sentence, instead of going toMIT she takes job of a school janitor and becomes completely quiet, isolated and wants to clean things which in a way is her psychologicalresponse to what happened or what she did. One day as she hears somemore stories about the approaching mirror planet, she decides to visitJohn's house where she might asks for his forgiveness but she freaksout a bit and instead pretends to be a maid for a new maid service whoare offering their free day trails. So slowly they develops a bond as they both are quite creative andgenius conversation wise and gradually sparks in a more romanticrelation with John still not knowing that Rhoda is the reason why hislife turned like this. Rhoda then enters into a essay competition wherethe winner will be the first civilian to travel to that another earth, your own self might have not done things that you did is the reason sheis willing to go but what happens after is one of the best moments ofthe movie. Little was i expecting but it turned out really good, breakthrough performance by both director and the actress without adoubt. This movie will remind you of Melancholia but that is whereapproaching planet will end every life possible on earth, sparringeveryone out of their misery once and for all. Here, the approachingplanet may give another chance, another chance for survival, a freshand new start, a chance to undo some of your most regretful mistakes inshort this planet will not end your life but will give you another one.Now this is the most creative idea that was used in a movie last year, superbly original and it works fantastic.I thought Brit Marling did a fantastic job here, being a newcomer andhaving the ability to express so much without speaking is just superband something that even most of the established actors lack. This movieis being overlooked, people forgot about how good it is and so did theyforgot to nominate her in the breakthrough or debut actors categoriesbecause believe me, she deserves it. For a indie movie and with hardlyany budget to really show the sci fi elements in a quite satisfactoryway is brilliant, cinematography was stunning with a perfect use ofnatural lighting. The entire movie has quite a haunting and isolateddepressed feeling that it needed. Another Earth expresses itself quiteeasily without any problems or hesitations, director know what he isdoing and what he is trying to tell us through this movie and so doesthe actors. It may be too slow moving and boring for certain audiencebut for me it was good. It does however feel a bot dragging towards theend but overall a perfectly told story.Rating:4/5B+Follow My Blog: HollywoodAndMe.Blogspot.com

One of a kind and the best of the year

Very rarely does a film come along that changes your perspective on theworld around you as well as the world inside your head. Even moreuncommon is a science fiction movie that, despite an impossiblepremise, remains grounded in reality and never forgets that at itscore, it is a deeply human story. Mike Cahill's Another Earth, whichopened to glowing reviews at this year's Sundance Film Festival, doesboth of those, and in spite of its minute budget, it's one of the moreimpressive science fiction films of recent years.Another Earth chronicles the discovery of a new planet in our solarsystem, a planet that mirrors ours exactly - down to the people thatinhabit it. On the night of the discovery, MIT-bound Rhoda Williamsdrunkenly crashes into the car of Yale professor John Burroughs, killing his pregnant wife and son and leaving him in a coma. Four yearslater, Rhoda is released from prison and sets out to atone for hercrime; Rhoda's journey coincides with more in-depth studies anddiscoveries about "Earth 2," and this is where the story really begins.Another Earth certainly has science-fiction elements, but Earth 2generally remains in the background, while the human story ofatonement, regret, and second chances takes the forefront. In fact, thebest scene of the film has nothing at all to do with Earth 2: it's ascene of Rhoda and John bonding over a video game. Earth 2 is not muchof a plot point, but more of another character in the film; itrepresents for Rhoda and John the chance at another life, thepossibility of something different, and its ubiquity in every shotsuggests to the audience that those possibilities are always there. This is the kind of science-fiction film I wish there were more of. Thegenre usually calls for explosions, thrilling action sequences, and ahandsome movie star as the lead; Another Earth presents silence, introspection, and a deeply flawed main character who doesn't know howto maneuver within the life she has ruined for herself. People in thecinema complained that Earth 2 was never fully explored, and that theconflict should have focused more on that, but that's a story foranother, in my opinion, inferior film. Another Earth is interesting notfor its exploration of scientific possibilities but for its study ofhow people react to and are changed by the extraordinary.Mike Cahill, the director, and Brit Marling, the lead actress, co-wrotethe screenplay, and I hope this is only the first of many futurecollaborations between the two. Their passion for science shows, asdoes their commitment to creating a profoundly real character study andlimiting the fiction to the background. Marling as an actress is arevelation. She clearly has a deep understanding of Rhoda; the way shecarries herself is precisely in tune with Rhoda's development, she'snot afraid to play the role as awkward, inept, scared, and above all, flawed. William Mapother's John Burroughs isn't as fleshed out as Rhodais, but he excels in a plum role that we haven't seen him take onbefore. He is spiky and angry, and throughout the course of the film hebeautifully and gradually reveals his character's broken core. Thescore by Fall On Your Sword mimics the film in a way, containing hintsof electronica with a moving, emotive theme at the center.Another Earth, simply put, is one of a kind. It puts a fresh spin onthe science-fiction genre, and I hope one day it will be looked back onas revolutionary for the way it gives the human story prominence overthe fictional aspects. It's not only the best movie of 2011 so far, butit's become one of my favorites of all time as well.

The Worst Film Ever Made (in this universe or any other)

I had the misfortune of seeing this film at the Museum of the Movingimage in Brooklyn. It was screening as part of the world sciencefestival, which I'm still not quite able to wrap my head around becausethe film's scientific insights are pathetic, superficial musings abouttrite pseudo-intellectual topics. That aside, the infantilestorytelling and film form is unbelievably offensive and condescending, and would be hilarious to mock if not for the sobering fact that thisgarbage actually won a prize at Sundance. For anyone who has seenKieslowski's masterpiece The Double Life of Veronique, this film will beespecially offensive as the story seems to draw heavy inspiration fromit, albeit in the dumbest way possible. The acting is beyond awful andthe camera-work, while sometimes compelling, is overwrought. With the'success' of this film and of others like it, (it is very reminiscentof the callow and superficial thematics of Black Swan), I am fearfulfor the future of our cinema.

Very good...

I watched this movie with no expectations the only thing i had heardwas that the ending was good. So I watched it and it got better andbetter and better but then it ended and i thought really that was theending? At first I thought well the movie was good but i didn't likethe ending but then i thought more and more about it and thought of thetheories behind it and then i decided i loved it! The movie is about a young girl called Rhoda who has her whole life infront of her but then she gets in a car accident it being her faultkilling a mother and a child and she ends up in prison for four years. She then has to restart life again so she gets an awful job as a highschool cleaner. At the start you hear a radio report about a small blueplanet suddenly appearing and by the time she is let out of jail theplanet has came closer and looks identical to earth. They then name itearth 2 and have a competition allowing somebody to travel there. When they try and make contact to the other earth they realise thatthere is another them up there. Rhoda then starts thinking did i makethe same mistakes on that earth? When all this is happening Rhoda hasbeen cleaning the father(john) and husband of the people she killedthinking thats she could make his life better and they end up gettingvery close. She then finds out that she has won the competition to theother earth and tells John that she was the one that killed his wifeand son. She then hears a theory about how the earths were synchronisedbut that broke as soon as the planet was spotted which was about fouryears ago before the accident. So she gives the ticket to John thinkingthat his wife and son might still be alive. He then goes to the otherearth. The ending is weird at first it simply ends with Rhoda walking alongthe side of her house wearing her baggy clothes and then she seesherself standing beside her garage and thats it thats the end. There isno clear storyline behind the end like how she got there if she had abetter life on earth 2 but i think that by the clothes she wearing shelooks a lot better dressed but then the expression on her face looksdepressed. But if she had a good life on earth 2 then why would shehave won the ticket to visit the other earth? well at the start Rhodasays that she got accepted MIT and when she gets out of prison she hasposters of planets and a telescope in her bedroom which obviously meansthat she liked astronomy, so maybe if the one on earth 2 hadn't had theaccident but became successful in astronomy and she was an astronomerstudying the other planet so got to go visit it. She then turns up ather parents house and sees herself in baggy clothes and is surprised tosee herself like that because in the other world she is successful. Ormaybe John sent her to her that she was forgiven. Maybe she was exactlythe same life on earth 2 but didn't give away the ticket and wasdepressed to see that nothing was different. these are just a fewtheories i thought up but there are many more behind it and thedirector and writers aren't telling anyone what they were thinkingabout when they wrote the ending. This is a very powerful movie thathas a very powerful love story behind all the sci-fi parts of it. Ithought it was a great movie that left you thinking by the end. Maybenot everyones cup of tea though.

Piece of crap

This is one of those "wannabe deep and meaningful film". In otherwords, peace of crap not worth watching. I see all other reviews andpeople are saying this is great, wow, amazing, etc. But can anyone tellme point of this film? No. Girl kills some guy's family and she feelsguilty and cleans his house and gives him ticket for trip to Earth 2.What is deep and profound in that? Nothing. Just because movie is slowand has few dialogs it means that it is peace of art, and people rightaway think its awesome. Nope guys, this is just a bad film, but if youwant to stay ignorant, give it 10/10. Better watch real masterpieces, and if you think i am hater, watch these titles and tell me that afterwatching it: Gone with the wind, Seventh Seal, Umberto D, SpaceOdyssey, Barry Lyndon (and all Kubrick's), K-Pax, King Of Comedy, DeerHunter, Aguirre, That Obscure Object of Desire and many more. etc.

More Here Than Meets The Eye

A fair share of people, at Sundance and beyond, have had a chance tosee "Another Earth." It seems people are polarized by it - eitherloving it as I did or hating it as some did. Rather than give away toomany secrets let me help you understand what side of the fence you'llprobably be on: The "science" of the movie is merely a backdrop for amuch more telling tale - one of the heart. William Mapother and BritMarling are the ultimate "star crossed" people. They survive thetragedies of life while looking in a mirror of universal proportions. They FEEL, which isn't common in science fiction fare. Then again, thisis NOT a "science fiction" film. In fact, it's LESS of a sciencefiction film than the revamped Battlestar Galactica was a sciencefiction show. Both BSG and Another Earth use the science (andsignificant "license") to help the story along. The filters of the lens capture the depth and circumstance of bothMapother and Marling. Marling in particular warrants more screen timebeyond this movie; she's not only stunning but soulful with anexpressiveness that belies her age. Mapother is as always, very muchthe "soul of the moment" in so many moments within this film. Though assome have commented, some choices the characters make are"questionable," but the viewer has to remember that they're alreadysuspending belief with the science shown. If you're looking for a.) extreme technical accuracy vs. plausibilityand "license" or b.) an action thriller or science fiction "tour deforce," then this film is not for you. However, of you're looking for arefreshing change from the standard fare coming out of Hollywood, youwill certainly enjoy "Another Earth."

Two Can Be as Bad as One; It's the Loneliest Number Since One

Just what is it about indie science fiction that is so fascinating?Maybe it's the idea that great effects are done on a small budget. Ormaybe it's the simple fact that it's indie filmmaking. Regardless ofpretense or the filmmaker's confinements, indie movies of the "lesser"genres (action, horror, sci-fi, etc.) almost always impress, AnotherEarth being no exception to this general rule.Another Earth marks a marvelous turn that most sci-fi movie writers aretoo scared to take, and that is into the realm of a character drama.Mike Cahill's thought-provoking debut as director (and writer andcinematographer and editor) is a risky venture, but it almost alwaysworks. Unfortunately, Cahill has concocted a premise that is toointeresting for his small, pensive movie, but the beautiful BritMarling makes it possible to ignore most of the film's most glaringissues as she sweeps the audience away with her acting. It's best to go into Another Earth without any outside knowledge, butif you've come to this page, you probably know too much already. Hereis your chance to leave before I begin with story details...Still with me? Good. Another Earth is centered around Rhoda Williams(Brit Marling), an MIT student who becomes frenzied after she finds outthat scientists have discovered a planet nicknamed Earth 2. Earth 2 isthe same in composition as our earth, however the problem is that Earth2 has suddenly moved from behind the sun and into view in our nightsky. Rhoda drunkenly leaves a party and drives away, only toaccidentally hit another family's car while she is stargazing. Themother and child are killed; the father (William Mapother), on theother hand, is left in a coma. Four years later, Rhoda is released fromjail and the father awakens from his coma. It's up to Rhoda to find thecourage to apologize and right what she has done wrong.Visually, Another Earth is an impressive film. There's a constantreminder that the film is independent--Cahill is forced to rely ongrainy hand-held shots for some of the film's most beautifulmoments--and yet it's very well-done for a film that supposedly cost$150,000 to make. Cahill returns to his roots in filming sharks andjellyfish for National Geographic by giving the human form a feeling ofmystique. There are quite a few shots of Rhoda walking in slow-motion,Earth 2 looming in the background. But it's all worth it: the viewer isconstantly introduced to the world's cruelty and ugliness, but Cahillhas somehow made it serene and strangely inviting.Whether or not Another Earth could have possibly held together withoutgreat actors is something that should be called into question. BritMarling gives the performance that every actress wants to give. Sheadds a seemingly impossible amount of depth to the character of Rhoda. We feel her pain constantly, and it's all thanks to Marling. Marling isworthy of a Best Actress nomination for her work in Another Earth.Although William Mapother is not to be ignored either. Maybe you'veseen him on "Lost" when he played Ethan, however here, he doesn't playa baddie. He's honest and human in his slice-of-life performance.Another Earth isn't perfect, in fact, it's far from it. The interestingideas of two earths, a whole new you, and fear of doppelgangers isunderused, if not absent entirely. The ending is, without a doubt, science fiction at its best, however it's really the only scene in themovie that is pure sci-fi. The ending could be a "twist," but I'm notgoing to call it that because the ending is just as subtle as the restof the movie. Nevertheless, it packs a punch. Cahill should feature thesame premise in his next film, but this time, he should entertain allthe special effects that everyone wanted to see in this one.At the Sundance Film Festival this year, Another Earth won the AlfredP. Sloan Prize, an award given to the film that best portrays a sci-fistory. There may not have been many movies at Sundance that could havequalified, but there's no question that Another Earth deserved.Cahill's first movie is quiet, well-made, and has the makings of anindie classic. Brit Marling and William Mapother's chemistry perfectlyfits Cahill's excellent script, causing the audience to ponder "Whatif...?" for the entire movie. It's mystifying science fiction, the kindwithout explosions and the kind without little green men. And Cahillproves that this, this lo-fi, destructive, and emotionally tensemeditation, may be the best kind of science fiction.

Grabs you from the beginning and leads you into a unique premise

This film grabs you from the beginning and then leads you into a uniquepremise. Screenwriter and director Mike Cahill in his first featurefilm is clearly quite talented and achieved a very good-looking film ona shoestring budget. He and co writer Brit Marling, who also starred inthe movie have a great imagination and a very subtle touch. They alsopulled in excellent photography and great music background to sustainthe mood of the film. Veteran actor William Mapother joins them and heand Marling appear to occupy the screen just about all the time.Flashes of television news reports, talking heads and other clipsestablish the appearance of " Another Earth" or "Earth Two " as it iscalled. We also see our twin planet in the sky throughout the film andare introduced to the idea that that such a situation would appear tohave everything including people exactly the same as on our own Earth. The implication to Marling's character is quite profound as bothcharacters are enduring unbearable suffering. In our post filmdiscussion with Cahill and Marling it seems that they feel that thehuman condition leads people to have great desire to understandthemselves and the possibility of meeting oneself, commiserating andperhaps even altering one's fate and suffering is a universal fantasy.Perhaps because we believe that self reflection and therapy is the wayto go when there is such a need or perhaps we just couldn't give up ourreality base, the movie didn't work as well with us as it did with theSundance crowd who chose it as an award winner and with Fox Searchlightwho picked it up for big time distribution. It will be making therounds later this month, on this Earth.FilmRap.net

This is a allegorical movie about human kind.

Another earth to help us see ourselves. A serious accident to show ourhuman drama. So with the movie we are encouraged to see our own humandrama on our own planet. The people on the other earth are us! We havealready forgotten the impact of the picture of Earth taken out of theApollo capsule. We live in a world where wars and conflicts are raging.Where millions suffered and are suffering. Where a financial crisis isgoing on. Where we are unable to solve our problems. In the movie ourworld is suffering, the other world is how it can be. The composer'sfamily is alive. Rhoda finished her study. Rhoda sees her better selfin the end of the movie. The other world population is how we could be.The other world is a jewel in the sky. The other world is the jewel weshould keep in mind. The movie helps us to change our perspective, fromhaving to accept grim reality as it is on this world to a dream for abetter world. Only a jewel in the sky of our mind, our dream, keeps uswanting to change the world for the better. As Rhoda gives her journeyto the other world to John, so we should give to the other in a moreurgent need. I think this was meant with the movie.

First-time Indie director serves up angst-ridden characters, implausible as 'another earth' up in the sky

For all those sci-fi aficionados out there, I don't want to disappointyou but be forewarned that 'Another Earth' might fail to meet yourexpectations. The sad fact is that the film's intriguing premise of amirror image earth appearing in the night's sky, has little to do withthe science fiction flicks you've come to enjoy but much more similarto today's indies, with all the attendant melodrama and angst-riddencharacter machinations. The 'parallel' Earth (herein referred to as Earth2) is not a paralleluniverse but actually a duplicate of our own Earth. All the people arethe same as the people on Earth1 but can change in subtle ways, if theybecome aware of each other's existence (you can confirm this onWikipedia but even they don't provide an explanation for this odd turnof events). The plot is rather simple: Rhoda Williams is an outgoing high schoolstudent, about ready to go off to MIT, when she has one too many drinksand gets into a car accident where a man's wife and child are killed. The man is John Burroughs who ends up in a coma for a few years, whileRhoda is shipped off to jail for vehicular manslaughter. Because she'sa juvenile at the time of the offense, her record is sealed, and themedia is kept in the dark as to her identity. A big problem is thatBrit Marling who plays Rhoda, was around 27 when the film was made, soit's very hard to buy that she's a juvenile (someone under 16). In NYState, the criminal records of 'youthful offenders', kids between theages of 16 and 19, are sealed, but if they're tried as adults, theiridentities are not necessarily kept secret from the media.Equally unlikely is that John has no interest in learning the identityof the youth responsible for the deaths of his wife and child. Hisspecious explanation is that if someone was to reveal this informationto him, he might not be able to control his anger and end up goingberserk, perhaps attacking the offender with deadly force. Equallyimplausible is John's too easy acceptance of Rhoda, who poses as atrainee for a cleaning service and offers a free cleaning job when sheattempts to gain entry to his home, seeking an audience with him. Whenwas the last time someone came by and offered to clean your home forfree?Perhaps the most implausible conceit of 'Another World', is Rhoda'sdecision to bed John, BEFORE confessing that she was responsible forthe accident. Why would Rhoda, who already feels terrible about whathappened, make things worse by deceiving John and going to bed withhim? Or for that matter, how many people who committed such a crime, would attempt to form a relationship with a victim, without tellingthem first? In most cases, a young woman who comes from a loving family(and her parents seemed like decent folks), would have sought out somekind of counsel from her parents. The film's scenarists of course implythat the accident was so devastating to her psyche, that she withdrewto the point where she didn't want anyone's help. So it's even moreunlikely that a young woman, with such a fractured psyche, would havedared to solve the problem all on her own by contacting John.Even more egregious than the overall implausibility of the plot are theshallow characterizations. We learn next to nothing about John, who isonly seen interacting with Rhoda. Perhaps if we saw him interactingwith another character or two, his personality might have seemed a tadbit more interesting. Rhoda is equally dull as she's as angst-ridden asJohn—yes, we understand that she can't get over the accident, but doessuch a character really make for good drama?Yes there are people out there who will find contentment in a one-notemelodrama, leading up to a protagonist's redemption. Finally, Earth2 isworked into the plot. Rhoda gives up the seat on the spaceship that'sshe won in an internet contest, to John, so he can see his family onEarth2. Problem is that John2 might interfere with his plans to form anew life up there. A myriad of tortured explanations are provided by abevy of internet posters, arguing that the mere sight of his wife andchild on Earth2 will soothe his troubled soul. How pathetic! As forRhoda, contentment comes to her existence when Rhoda2 appears onEarth1, thus confirming that the accident wasn't duplicated in themirror world. Though she never met her 'twin' and has no real bond withher, the mere 'thought' that her double has avoided the fate sheexperienced, is enough to dispel all those dark thoughts that hasparalyzed her soul.Kudos to Writer/Director/Cameraman Cahill for putting this whole thingtogether for about $80,000. Next time, however, it would be wise forMr. Cahill to nix the shaky camera work. This could have ended up as anintriguing Twilight Zone-like episode. Unfortunately, the 'dessert' ispure indie, angst-ridden cinema, with characters as implausible as'another earth', up in the sky.

Hmmm

I'm not sure whether Another Earth has ideas above its ability todeliver, or is simply pretentious. Whichever, it turns out to be a slowmess from which two decent films are struggling (and failing) to getout. One of these is an intriguing (but by no means original) story of aduplicate Earth suddenly appearing in the sky. This is interpolatedwith the story of a young woman who drunkenly causes a car crash inwhich a woman and child are killed. After serving a prison term, shegoes to the home of the father (who, having emerged from a coma, hashit the bottle) intending to apologise: losing her nerve, she ends upcleaning for him while applying to join the group of people who are totravel to Earth 2 as she feels there is no place left for her. Thesetwo damaged people find solace in each other but, of course, he doesn'tknow the truth about her. Then she wins a place on the spacecraft...Both these stories have potential. Unfortunately, neither is fullyrealised, and they certainly don't mix well together, especially theillogical (and, frankly, ludicrous) developments towards the end. Also, this is one of those films which has you shouting "Get a move on!" atthe screen far too often - it is soporifically slow-moving. There is anelement of self-conscious artiness about it which irritates. One wishesthat the makers had made two punchy, entertaining, and non-arty moviesinstead. But, sadly, as science fiction it goes nowhere (and does so badly), asdrama it fails to reach a satisfactorily resolution (and does soextremely slowly) and, as an attempted marriage of both it is defeatedby its determined arty-fartiness.And I haven't even mentioned gravity...

Worst movie of the year?

If the premise of the this movie was true, there would be anothertragedy. The other planet would have to watch this turd too. Slow, plodding, and unrealistic. Another "edgy, cool, can't miss" (according tothe drunken reviewers)Suncrap p.o.s. Honestly, the only thing thatcomes out of that "show" is swag bags. How about putting someone in theflick we've heard of. Oh that's right, that would break another Suncraprule. Let's face it, nothing comes out of there, and the reviewers knowit. You know how you can smell a turd movie coming out? WhenEntertainment weekly gives it a, best ____of the summer, or how about, first top ______of the spring. Let's go with "Best movie that wasreleased on an abnormally warm summer day". If it looks like a turd, itdoesn't have to smell like one. It already qualified way before thewind changed.

Not what I expected... better!

From the name of the title (and I guess from watching a bit of thetrailer, but not all, since I don't like spoilers) I thought this filmwas about traveling to another earth, identical to ours, where we couldstart over or live in a reality where our mistakes could have beenmissed, but with some kind of plot twist, of course, to make itinteresting and/or make us think a little.Thats not what this film is about and neither is it suited or peoplewho like sci-fi but can't have a sci-fi film where the science behindit isn't correct, because this film has a lot of things unexplained orjust highly unlikely. But that's not what this film is about. This film is about two people,a man who lost his pregnant wife and son in an car accident and thegirl who is to blame for it. Brit Marling does a wonderful job makingus empathise with what the character's thinking, from that moment sheunderstand what she has done, to the moment where she understands thather future in MIT was lost, or from the moment where she feels like allshe can do is make his life a bit better day by day, to the moment hetells her about the teenager that killed his family. And WilliamMapother doesn't fall behind, as he plays the role of a man who doesn'tcare to clean up his house and who plans on spending his life drinkingto forget. However, the two roles make a wonderful combination when hefeels happy for her and suddenly asks her to stay, because then, herguilt burns her inside out and she ends up confessing, a moment whereyou feel both her repentance and his spine-chilling dreadfulness.Yes, a sad story that didn't really end well, depending on how you seeit. My version is that while Rhoda from Earth 1 suddenly decided togive her ticket to John, Rhoda from Earth 2 decided to run away, andboth found out the sad truth just by that moment, since she could onlyhave gotten the ticket after submitting her attempt, which she did inorder to run away from all that. At least that's what fits well for me,what makes the movie perfect.I find it really interesting that Brit wrote her own script for this, since it's a nice initiative and it came out beautiful! It was indeed a wonderful piece that moved me more than I would'veimagined. It's just so tragic that both their lives ceased and eventhought some might argue that it's her fault, neither of them deservedit, which makes you think it isn't fair, but it's not supposed to befair or unfair, it's just... life.

Required taste, far from a Sci-Fi thriller.

Overly artistic/abstract. There are constantly long, drawn-out scenessimilar to that of Family Guy without any shred of intentional humor. The cinematography is very similar to that of The Office. Thesoundtrack consists of both depressing orchestrated or choir-like solosand unpleasing synthesized noises. In the previews alone, you can recognize the anomaly within thisparallel planet which makes you curious as to what happens. Do notexpect a single question to be answered. The anomaly itself explainsthat an answer is not possible, therefor lacks the thought provoking,mind-bending scenario that most are looking for.Although this film wasn't based on a book, it would have been muchbetter if it remained a paperback novel. I'm rather lenient with mycriticisms, but this movie honestly isn't worth your time.

Terrible movie

I watched this on 2X because it was painfully boring but I wanted tosee what happened with "Earth 2"...I ended up wasting 45 minutes of my life instead of 90... Someone had agood idea, but they wasted it on this movie... Also, the second Earth keeps getting closer throughout the movie and noone is concerned about this obvious collision course.Perhaps they can make a sequel where the two Earths crash in to eachother and mankind struggles to survive on a mashed-up double earthwhere everyone that's not dead has a duplicate... That I would pay tosee.
