At first, like most folks, I was excited about this show based on thetrailer, concept etc. I watched the first few episodes and realizedit's a rather conservative, formulaic show clearly designed to be afamily drama that was safe enough for children to watch with theirparents and of a topical arrangement tolerable for most modern parents. However, the show has developed immensely in the final few episodes ofthe first season. The majority of the episodes were drab, capsulatedpieces of neutral television programming. However, what has developedin the last few episodes leads me to believe that this show hastremendous potential. Main Characters die, big things happen, the plottwists and thickens and the action picks up quite a bit. I still can'tcall the plot original at all, it's Avatar/Jurassic Park/Earth2/Lost/Stargate all the way but who cares? Firefly was just a showbased on Han Solo, The Wire is just the Sopranos over again and Law &Order...well need I say more?In just 3 or 4 episodes, this went from a show I caught on Hulu becauseI couldn't sleep to a show that's now at the top of my list. Too badthey waited until the very end of the season to make the show worthwhile, there's a whole lotta boring episodes to sit through to get tothe good stuff, that could alienate a lot of potential viewers. Time will tell.

I have never wrote a review on IMDb before, but after reading otherpeople's reviews of Terra Nova, It felt like I needed to.I discovered this series a month ago. A series set into the future, where the human race is at the brink of extinction, because of our owngreed and ignorance. But there is one last hope: Terra Nova. Humanityis given a second chance at survival. A blessing they might notdeserve, but still they've got it.A chance to travel 85 million years into the past. A chance to startall over again, with dinosaurs, clear skies and oranges. A couple ofdays after the premiere of this truly great series, I saw the ratings. It hit me hard. A sad shock went through my entire body. Only ninemillion people saw Terra Nova...Americans, they have a horrible eye for entertainment. Truly horrible.Great series are cancelled every year, while horrible sitcoms arerenewed. While nine million people witnessed this year's greatestnewcomer to the television, Terra Nova, over 20 million people watchedTwo and a half men. I can't believe it. There is one question I can'tget out of my mind. Why?What it is Two and a half men has got, that Terra Nova hasn't? Bad plotlines? Horrible jokes, or maybe mediocre actors? Dear Americans, you donot know what entertainment is. You've got no idea what a great seriesis supposed to be like. It is too bad you've got as much power as youhave.Terra Nova is an extremely expensive series to make. You see, it is notabout a couple of guys drinking in a bar or watching television athome. It is about dinosaurs and a new world, far far away. It isspeculated that the show will be cancelled if it doesn't get 17-18million viewers steadily through every episode. So: Thank youAmericans, you are about to erase one of the finest series we have seenin years, because you prefer crap television. Some reviewers says that meanwhile the dinosaurs might look real, thehumans don't. Well, I feel the opposite way. Jason O'mara plays JimShannon, father of the Shannon family the series is about. You mightknow him from Life on Mars (U.S Version). He is a great actor, and heproves it once again. The actors is not the ones who look a little bitfake. It's the dinosaurs. It's not like the dinosaurs in Terra Novalooks like the T-Rex from the original King Kong, but I expected a bitmore, considering the money spent on the pilot episode. The dinosaurslook a bit lifeless. There is some truly beautiful scenes in the pilot. Right from the veryfirst minute, we follow Jim Shannon, the father of the Shannon familywho are the main people in the series. He brings home an orange to hisfamily. They are very surprised, almost shocked. As we see the orangeshine as everything around it is grey and colorless, Elisabeth (themother of the Shannons) says that she can't remember last time she sawone of those.Zoe is the youngest daughter of Elisabeth and Jim. When they had justentered Terra Nova and was heading straight for the "village", shelooks up and witnesses something beautiful. She is used to the grey, depressive clouds anno 2147, but now she sees a blue sky with brightclouds. "They are so white", she says. At the end of the episode, sheasks her parents if "it's going to fall on us". She was talking aboutthe moon. The family gathered together outside the house, fascinatedabout the moon which had never been that clearly nor beautiful. We take these things for granted. Tasty fruits, clear skies andromantic full moons. The Shannon family also took these things forgranted. Humanity in general did. It resulted in an unrecognizableworld. A world which got grayer and grayer every day, and the airthinner and thinner. But the Shannons are among those who got a newchance to start over. And that is what Terra Nova is all about. Asecond chance to make things right.

I was pretty excited for this show when I first saw thepreviews/trailers/etc. I got it on iTunes today and I'm a bitdisappointed. This show is really just your typical, clichéd family drama with somefuturistic guns and a few dinosaurs. The acting is just decent and thestory is actually pretty boring. The characters are all very onedimensional, boring, etc. The computer effects are sub par, which is adisappointment since they are used so often. In short, it's just you're typical, PC Fox show. I don't know how manymore of these they're going to make before they die away as a company.

So we have underage drinking and even illegal drug production, moonshine. We have gore, people eaten by dinos, and generaldisobedience to parents. These are all fine by me for a show in itself, but then to pretend you're making it a kids show by saying the guns usetranq darts , the cannons sound waves and flashy light grenades thatscare the monsters away?! Are you serious? I was thinking finally, asci-fi break from all the boring crime shows with whiney casts, and weget this nonsense with some kid crying about his situation every otherscene. You'd do better just to play us some old star trek reruns forthe 500th time. There's no alien civilizations, just two factions sentto the past so the only thing the show has to keep it going is this bitof mystery about the split of the factions and more drama for the kidsto whine about now and then. Yet so many hints were droped about thetime line(s) really singular despite whet the taught the girl thatunless the writers descide to change direction midstream, I alreadyknow the mystery plot regarding that. Oh well.

Since I knew this show was about to aired I was impatient, so when theday came I sat in front of my TV with a basket full of popcorn. Andyes!, finally, there it was Terra Nova with its awful future and allthe things this kind of apocalyptic shows like this one do to makes usthink about the horrible future ahead of us. Then, there they were, our"heroes" traveling 85 million years with the promise of a newbeginning, a new era for mankind.I was watching all this really excited, thought "wow, 85 million years, that's something", but not far from the start of the show I startedthinking that this just might not be as good as I thought it would...and sadly, I was right. At first Terra Nova gives you what you expect, but not much is goingon. You start understanding that this is hardly gonna become one greatseries and the feeling that this is gonna be a just-one-season-show isjust around the corner, coming fast to you and your almost disappointed-no, let's say REALLY disappointed- face with your half full popcornbasket on your lap.Through episode two and three I kept trying, but no, I'm sorry TerraNova, I'm sorry popcorn, but this is one of those shows I'm gonna runaway and fast.If you liked Jurassic Park and Dune this might be the right show foryou, but seriously, it's lame, really, really lame.

Woe, woe, woe! The series is misery and despair. Dialogues offend me tothe extent that, among other things, this series is totally notwatchable. Nobody has a clue why it is there at all. Salvation ofmankind, the planet in the future, apparently not to the line so thatthe future will not change (?), A bunch of useless characters in thescientific project, working ... What does this do? Do what pleasesthem, they go where they want to ... Smuggling, the rich are (!!!???),generate their secret societies and subversive groups. No one is awareof the dangers that surrounded them, the soldiers are children thos arefull of culture and manners ... While the children are full ofarrogance. Intellectually they are limited ... Etc, etc. It's a shame! So much potential is there in the story, that could make ten parallelseries. Two groups of people, 18 million years in the past. Each withits own information and the secret goal. The development of these twostories would be enough by itself. Their survival, task, andinterpersonal relationships ... But no, the seventh episode beginsfateful mission: to find Josh shoes! Rating: 1

Who knew a show with a great concept would be so boring?!? I understandthat Fox is trying to gather a wider audience, and what better way todo it than with an action-adventure television show with dinosaurs! Yougot your adult stories and drama mixed in with dinosaurs to balance itout for the kids! But, here's the problem, I'm 29 years old, yet stilla kid at heart. This show does nothing for either side of me.The the story and characters are really boring. During last nightsepisode, I found myself taking bets on guessing when the cliché's weregoing to occur (About to do a surgery, power goes out. About to kissthe girl, something interrupts them.) and I was correct pretty muchevery time. The main idea of the show is good, but the individualstory-arches are too confusing to follow, and some have just beendownright dropped altogether. The saddest part is, the story-archesthat COULD'VE been good were dropped, and the lousy ones were kept in.The only thing I enjoy is the special effects. I'll be honest, I'm aBIG dinosaur guy, so I was actually looking forward to seeing thedinosaurs they would use in the show. But, the thing that frustrates meis their inaccuracies. For example, they used a Carnotaurus in the veryfirst episode, which was fine, but it was TOO big! I understand thatyou want to make the dinosaurs look as ferocious as possible, but thisis 2011, it's time to be real with the dinosaurs. Another problem isthat they just downright MAKE UP dinosaurs. There's a set of dinosaurs(slashers?) that are a combination of three different dinosaur species.I can only imagine the 4-year-olds watching and saying, "NO NO NO!!!!THOSE AREN'T REAL!!!" But here's the thing, I could excuse ALL that, because the effects are great, but there's almost NO DINOSAUR SCREENTIME!!! Last night's episode involved a Spinosaurus. Given how muchtime the dinosaur had on the episode trailer, which was pretty much amajority of it, I got interested in seeing the episode. However, Icounted, Spinosaurus was on screen for about 1 minute out of the 45+minutes of the episode, and it didn't even figure that much in thestory. He sort of stomped in, got stopped by a wall of fire, and walkedoff. Where was the plan to eliminate him? Where was the destruction of,at the very least, a SINGLE BUILDING by the Spinosaurus?!Bottom line, if you're going to advertise that your show has dinosaurs,HAVE DINOSAURS FIGURE INTO THE STORY!!! Don't lure me in with thepromise of dinosaurs and deliver lackluster characters, stories, and nodinosaurs.

All I will say is give the show a chance. If you don't go into watchingit with high expectations you will not be let down. I knew virtuallynothing about Terra Nova before watching the pilot episode(s) andthoroughly enjoyed them. Was I a bit miffed with the lack ofDino-action? Sure. But not enough to come onto the internet and slagthe show off so much that nobody out there will watch it.There's some good acting- something of a rarity of late, a good premiseand a promising storyline AND it's got Stephen Spielburg as an ExecProducer... What more do you need in a TV series?I honestly think most of the reviews I've read on this show so far, aremuch to harsh on a show that they've spent maybe 2 hours watching.

THIS CONTAINS SPOILERSI think it was a rainy Tuesday when a friend IM:ed me about Terra Nova.Reading about the plot was like word candy, i've been waiting forsomething to substitute Lost since it ended and I really thought ifound it when i read about Terra Nova.Little did I know...It started off pretty good, i liked the look of the future earth in1080p. I didn't even mind the plot holes it started off with; thefather breaking out of the prison with that small laser thing, or thefact that he managed to get to the time rift even though he was awanted convict on the run.Whatever, they didn't spend much time in the future world. When they finally get to Terra Nova, I didn't expect that world to bejust as modern as the one they left. I expected them to rebuild theworld, starting up a colony, finding new ways to interact with nature.Instead, this family gets thrown in just about the same world they leftbut with dinosaurs, sun and oranges.Terra Nova is basically a present day family drama, but 85 millionyears ago. Rebellious teen age boy, nerdy younger sister,cute-but-stupid youngest sister, impulsive gun craving father, thedo-the-right-thing-all-the-time mother. Its a shame really, since the story has (had) sooo much potential, butthe cliché-o-meter is about to blow up any episode now.I'm gonna watch another 2-3 episodes of Terra Nova because I love thestory and despite the plot holes, the clichés and the terrible acting, the CGI is alright.

Having read a lot of the reviews here; I have to dis-agree with many ofthem. This is a good, entertaining, visually appealing series.Sure it is not scientifically perfect and sure there are someunexplained events documented very well here. However, the storyline about going back in time, the challenges thatprovides, the fight of principles against mindless profiteering, theneed to keep in touch with the future ('past'?) and the special effectsare entertaining and ... that's what it's for mostly. While a little on the predictable side; there are interesting twistsand the storyline seems to be going in a good direction by the end ofthe first season.Given this is clearly developed for prime time US TV and we all knowthe constraints that puts on a show; I enjoy it and am looking forwardto the next season.

My eight year old daughter loves this show because of the dinosaurs. itseems wholesome enough. That's really the best I can say about it. Thisis not a show for adults: The plots are very formulaic. The acting is over the top.The dialog is simple. The morality is very black & white.TiVo this one for the kiddies, but if you're wanting to see thisconcept done well check out the sadly departed BBC "Outcasts". It'slike Outcasts is the adult version of Terra Nova.

Good: Hey, it's a good show so far, it had an amazing pilot (just likeLOST). The actors aren't bad (especially Captain Taylor). The Teenagersare a good addition because it shows how most teenagers act, (remindsme of Kim, from 24 and Shannon from LOST). It has a pretty good story, but there is almost no new themes out there. And for a T.V show, it haspretty good graphics. So stop hating about that.Bad: The one thing I don't like is the laser guns, I think that'spretty cheesy. Another is the new names of the dinosaurs, you wouldthink that since Spielberg is on it then it should have T-rex orVelocoraptor.

Now at this point in the Terra Nova saga, inhabitants are rememberinghow 2149 was versus 85,000,000 new present via a crack in time fabricdoorway.Star Trek Enterprise series was based on 2150 decade, space travel inprogress because of what Zephraim Chocran had done in 2063 making wrapdrive success opening earth to galactic potentials.Mr Roddenberry saw humans evolve OUT of their infancy to travel beyond.Mr Spielberg various writers took the gloomy approach of humans goingthe Soylent Green looking route, where humans have allowed themselvesto so butcher the earth with; air itself mandates a rebreather mask, limited children per family, some people eating scraps, shall I go on?This is not condemnation but a powerful message of two roads to choosewriting, seen back to sci fi into the sixties of desolate future, fromhumans being SO stupid to IGNORE all the warnings of foolish choices. In Terra Nova's own way, this part of time we live outside of Hollywoodmagick creating WHAT COULD BE, the saga is a GOOD reminder based onwhat IS actually happening in the environment surrounding our presentworld, and we are not even to 2049 yet.

I really don't think the creators of the show were going forgroundbreaking, mind boggling, or engrossing. I'll admit, it's not themost original sci-fi show ever devised. It is a bit cliché at parts, acting isn't top notch but really, I think the show has succeeded inwhat it's trying to be: A fun show. It's generally lighthearted, interesting, and with likable characters. For a TV show, the specialeffects aren't too bad either.Seriously, some people need to chill out and enjoy some TV that doesn'tmake you feel like you need a long shower after you're done watching. It's a nice adventure with a little intrigue. I recommend it to anyonewho needs to unwind on Monday night.

A combination of 'Earth 2/Outcasts' meets 'Primevel' is the best way todescribe the double opening of Terra Nova. The difference with TerraNova is that it isn't another planet they go to but another version ofa prehistoric Earth existing in another time slip stream but thatexplanation is thrown in so blaze you might miss it but it does accountfor not caring if they change the past and affect their own futurecause it won't be theirs. What bugged me about Terra Nova is its focuson one particular family. Remember the awful '2012' disaster film withdespite the fact the world is blowing up around them this one Americanfamily stay together to survive all odds, apply it to this on aslightly less cataclysmic scale. If the series continues to focus onthis family it will quickly loose its appeal, we are talking about acolony, lets start meeting new more interesting characters rather thenthe white picket fence dream one of the writers is obviously aspiringto. Throw in Dinosaurs and its reminiscent of 'Primevel'. There isconflict amongst some of the colonists who have broken away like in'Outcasts' but as yet the mystery behind it with such blah charactersdoesn't make you care. I like the premise but like Earth2 it could falleasily into the cutesy category rather than good science fiction. Itdoes hold your attention and the possibilities are great but as with somany new series the writing and characterization just isn't great andunless it improves even with Star Treks Brannon Braga and StevenSpielberg attached it won't make a second series.
mywildimagination 04 May 2012
This is my first review by the way, so please be kind.I am a Sci Fi fan big time, I love the way it can take your imaginationaway to a completely original time and place and make you believe itfor at least a while. With Steve at the helm you're expecting the best and maybe that is partof the problem. It seems to me that Steve is trying too hard to producesomething that everyone can get into but in the end producing somethingthat ultimately disappoints everyone because it never really pushes theviewer.I think what is really needed is some teeth and i'm not talking aboutdyno-gnashers, it needs to be dirty, grimy, slimy, wet, bloody, darkand thought provoking. It needs to make the viewer think, make themconfused and make the viewers mind have to work. The sets look like they have come straight out of an 80's sitcom asnothing has any real depth or grain, I don't think this is necessarilythe fault of the set makers but maybe the way it was shot but its likeI have been watching a kids puppet show on TV where everything is madewith foam and sticky back plastic, it just doesn't look "real".Take the patrol cars, who in their right mind in a land filled withT-rex like animals would drive a car with no doors. They should bedriving around in heavily armored trucks like the one from Aliens 2 notkhaki coloured golf carts.I am still watching for something good for now but is this two dud's ina row for Stevie? Maybe!

When I heard Spielberg was exec producing a show about dinosaurs, Ihalf expected Jurassic Park: The Series. All the makings are here. Samefor LOST, the two things that this show will inevitably be compared to.It shoots for the mystery and stranded feel of LOST, while throwing inthe dinosaurs and the family dynamic of Jurassic Park. Sadly, this isneither, but something in between just shy of the quality of both. For those unaware of the story, we are taken to the future first, whereEarth has become an overpopulated, uninhabitable mess. To solve thisproblem, for a reason yet to be explained, humanity decides to timewarp back 85 million years ago, where they can live in peace andharmony with dinosaurs. Or, as the first episode would like us tobelieve, can run and scream in terror as carnivorous dinosaurs keeppeople penned in their little colony and out of the jungle. The focusof the show is the Shannon family, new pilgrims to the colony whoquickly learn what's what around Terra Nova. Of course, the mostentertaining and interesting character is Stephen Lang, who plays afriendlier version of his character from Avatar. After all, who can'tget enough gruff, military commander Stephen Lang. For the most part, Terra Nova is entertaining, interesting, yet whollydisposable television. It has the Spielbergian touches and is somewhatreminiscent of early 2000, late 90's sci-fi TV. Where those similaraspects in LOST were unfolded in a slow burn to let things sink in forthe viewer, or where our introduction to the danger of the dino's inJurassic Park was slowly brought forth, here it's thrown at you inforce. Not for a while, as we have to get acquainted with our maincharacters, but dangerous thunder lizards are soon enough thrown ourway. The carnage shown is a bit surprising considering it's basic TV,yet there are no known deaths, just a few strong, gory moments(depending on your definition of gory) here and there. The dinosaursthemselves are less than desirable. Whereas Jurassic Park, whichessentially perfected dinosaurs with a mix of practical and cg effects, had pleasing dinosaurs, here they seem a bit awkward and out of place.Almost completely cg, these dinosaurs look about 5 or 6 years old inthe cg department. It would appear that the budget for creating thedinosaurs was less than sufficient, which sadly translates into poorlyanimated dino's.Now, it's not all bad. Again, Stephen Lang is entertaining here as themilitary commander of the colony. The show also presents an interestingplot which I suspect could become more interesting as the season goeson. And while a show like LOST should have ended at probably it'sfourth season, Terra Nova has life in it. Sadly, if it doesn't getbetter than the pilot, than I can't say we will see a season 2. And FOXis quite famous for canceling shows. Maybe the power of StevenSpielberg will save the show. Who knows. I'll ride it for as long as Ican, I suppose. But for a pilot, the show was disappointing. Whatshould have been a titanic, impressive two hours turned into alackluster event with a lack of dinosaur action (and what is up withthose names? Slasher? really? We couldn't go with real dinosaurs likevelociraptors, compy's, or T- rex's?), turns out to shoot for the moonbut only get so far as our atmosphere.
urena-2 01 May 2012
Never saw a family with less moral and ethical values than the oneportrayed here in this series. Wow! Lying to the parents, stealing, cheating, fornicating... it never ends. And moral relativism isembedded into the movie itself. Nothing is wrong. Nothing is immoral. They just say "I am sorry" and that is supposed to take care of it all.Plus, the series is full of reruns from previous sci-fi previousmovies. The special effects are terrible and there are a bunch of kidsdoing whatever they want with absolutely no adult ruling their immoralactivities. If this is the way all of America is today, America is upfor a rude awakening very soon!

I read a few IMDb reviews on this show and was persuaded not to watchit. However, after a colleague of mine started talking about the show,I decided I would check it out for myself and rather make my owndecisions. I'm glad I did !! I've watched 8 episodes now and think it'sgood entertainment - sure it's not realistic, but hay this is sci-fiafter all. Relax and enjoy the escape from reality.I guess everyone has their own tastes, but people who don't like sci-fishouldn't rate it. Watch the pilot episode and then decide foryourself.Looking forward to watching the rest of the season and hoping for aseason 2.

Episode three of the new series Terra Nova on FX was indeed one of thebest episodes yet. The action scenes were fairly decent for a TV Show. However, the graphics of the dinosaurs are very terrible. Terra Novajust doesn't compete with Jurassic Park. If your looking for a show toreplace Lost, this is not it. In fact, Terra Nova has a very similarplot to Lost. The show is a scary/jumper/thriller all combined intoone. There was a lot of romance in this episode like we see in Lost.Relationships are starting to blossom. Terra Nova is so similar to Lostthat it even has "the others" or the "sixers" If you enjoy that type ofgenre, than this is a TV show you may want to watch.
