Rather good! (if you're not a simple-minded pervert looking for a thrill)

Just watched this movie and first came here to simply give a rating toit. Then I saw the reviews and just had to disagree with most of themexcept the one from "dylan-chauvin- smith". Of course the main plot hasbeen seen before, the whole teenagers taking a bad turn... but this onehas to be one the most original take on it I have seen in a while.First there is the political dimension and statement about Guantanamoitself and how war can really mess people up in their brains. It speaksof the potential for horror of letting people with too much power andvery little legal oversight. Being a lawyer can help when you have aproblem with authorities, but once these are removed from legaloversight, and far away, anything really can happen. Just checkwikipedia for Guantanamo, you'll get the idea. The detective coming in out of nowhere eases the tension created andjust continuing with further torture would have made the movie justanother one of the genre. A dark, voyeuristic thrill ride of sorts.Having him fail at rescue makes the movie much more chilling, at apsychological level.Leaving the movie without any definitive ending, if somewhatfrustrating for the viewer with little imagination, is very successfulat letting you feel the agony of indefinite imprisonment. Just thinkabout it, really.

1 hour 35 minutes total waste of time!!

I just watched this film, and it was the worse film I have ever seen;so bad that I had to register on this site to leave the feedback. The starting 30 minutes was really good; good acting and a veryinteresting story plot. However, after their arrest and beingkidnapped, things went down the hill really fast. There were no story,no historical, economical or any story line of any sort observed, andeven by introducing a private detective things didn't improve at all.Furthermore, the ending was totally appalling; no indication to asequel, no complete ending and not even any thoughts lead so thatviewers can continue with the story as they see or prefer, in order tomake the film more anticipating.I seriously recommend everyone not to see this film unless you havearound 2 hours free time to do absolutely nothing, but then, watching 3episode of friends back to back or repeatedly is much more fun.

Absolutely terrible!!!

This movie made no sense at all! It was a waste of 2hrs of my life! Ithad a good beginning for about 45mins, but after that, all startedgoing downhill. I am not a film reviewer, and I have never written anyreviews before, however, this film made me so angry>:O that I feltcompelled to register with the website and voice my opinion. One of thesub-plots might not as well have existed and it wouldn't have made anyimpact on the movie whatsoever! It is a shame that the film writers didnot make enough effort to show consistency and plot progression.Instead, they patched up the film full of non sense; and what starts ina promising way leaves the viewers totally disappointed and puzzled.Very weird...and please find something better to watch and don't wasteyour time watching this!

Dire!!!

How this has a score of 5.0 on here is beyond a joke. The first 25 minsor so were quite good with an interesting premise but then it just wentcompletely downhill. Everything just seemed completely pointless and isnever really explained. And the ending was, well, I don't know what iswas but it made no sense whatsoever. The acting, music and camera-workwere competent enough but the whole film seemed like it had just beenmade up as they went along. If you're going to make a film, at leaststart by having a point to it, this one didn't. So if you are lookingfor something interesting or exciting then avoid this one like theplague. It left me feeling cheated and quite depressed.

Marking

The suspense level of the movie is really high. On the other hand I cansee why people wouldn't really rate the movie high. It is a tough sell. It's also something that is very close to Americans (and might offendquite a few). Of course this is not representative and while it is onlya movie it does give a view of too much anxiety and fear and what thatmight lead to.It is shot on a low budget, but Karim Hussain, who also has worked as adirector, has a good eye and his camera work is without fault. Theacting while driven by high emotions never fails. And although you maysay, that the movie does not really evolve into something bigger (thereis not a big bang or anything else), it still may give you reasons tothink ...

Not all films have to have clear plots ...

Oddly enough, the bad reviews on this site were what enticed me toactually watch the film. Besides the first review by Coventry, whichhad some constructive criticism and actually compared this film withothers within its genre, the reviews all took issue with the episodicquality of the films plot. It seems that they haven't been introducedto the concept of art cinema - a mode of film practice which subvertsand breaks from classical filmic conventions like continuity editing, and strict causal relations between narrative events, instead focusingon the psychological depth of its characters and the "everyday" realismof disjointed, unrelated events. This film definitely shows variousqualities of the art cinema, especially its episodic structure andfocus on character psychology. I found the plot intriguing and despitewhat some of the other reviewers said, I think that the introduction ofthe private detective was not arbitrary but actually contributed to thecreation of the expectation that the tortured would be rescued. Bybuilding this character who can sympathize with the families of themissing, as he has ostensibly lost his own daughter, the directoreffectively takes the audience out of the roll of victim-by-proxy andinto rescuer-by-proxy. This is clever because by the time this plotline is introduced, the viewer has become frustrated with the course ofevents (as trapped in them as the tortured) and the detective becomesthe voice for the audience, while also giving them a view onto theother side of the tragedy of kidnapping/forcible confinement. As for the ending ... I cannot believe that one of the previousreviewers complained about the fact that the ending did not gesture toa sequel. I'm sorry bud, but sequels did not exist before the late 80searly 90s and the dawn of the multiplex theater. I also disagree withthe suggestion that the film doesn't allow the audience to interpretthe final events in any way that they wish - because that is exactlywhat the ambiguous ending does. The lack of closure makes it theviewers responsibility to interpret the ending in whatever way thatthey can.Overall, the film was esthetically pleasing and definitely generatedthe reactions thrillers are supposed to. Maybe for Coventry the film isjust another in a long line of psychopath/kidnapping/torture stories, but I have seen few which are as dedicated to the art of film and notvery tangibly grasping at demographics in hopes of being successful. Also I would say that Territories fell well within the range of theindependent film mode, and far from that of the B-film - despite itslow budget and virtually unknown cast. Definitely a film worth watching- at least for those who can appreciate films which reveal theirartifice by making the viewer think.

So, what do you think we should shoot today?

It is quite evident that this thing was pieced together on a dailybasis. I refuse to believe that someone actually sat down and wrote acomplete script for this pile of trash, but I would love to know howthey pitched this thing and managed to get someone to put up 3 millionto put it together. SOMEONE is a very good salesperson to pull thatoff. The beginning was great and the actors did a fine job of showingconfusion, anger and then surprise and fear when they are taken hostageby these two deranged "customs" agents. But once we're past that welose any semblance of there being a plot or reason or motive behindthese guys doing this. There's a few things that just don't make a lotof sense. Where did the guys get the uniforms, for one and obviouslythe local cops have been keeping an eye on these two. After the beginning it really seemed as though you had some small filmcrew take a bunch of actors out on a camping trip and each day startedout with a creative meeting that began with, "What are we going toshoot today?" I should have listened to the other reviewers who said togive it a pass, but I didn't. If you get to this review PRIOR towatching this, please do NOT, you will thank me and the others herelater if you watch something else...ANYTHING else.

Greetings from Guantanamo Bay, Canada

Deranged and sadistic psychopaths kidnapping randomly unfortunatetravelers in remote areas with as sole purpose to humiliate, tortureand eventually massacre them. There have been SO many movies with thisexact same plot outline over the past five-ten years that it has almostbecome a sub-genre on its own; a hybrid between hillbilly-horror andtorture-porn. The only more thing directors of these films can do todistinguish their effort from the others is being as creative andextreme as possible in drawing the characters of the psychopaths. Thecrazier, blood-thirstier and more perverted, the better. Olivier Abbouclearly understood that message, as the villains in his film"Territories" are uncannily straight-faced and nihilistic killers whorecreated their very own and private mini-version of Guantanamo Bay ina deep-hidden forestry region on the Canadian border with America.Dressed as border patrol officers, the two apprehend a car full oftwenty-something Americans returning home from a wedding. Okay, theyhave a broken headlight and were carrying a small dose of soft drugs, but the main reason they stopped the car is because the driver of thegroup is called Jalil El-Haddad. The fake officers accuse Jalil ofterrorism and before they properly realize, the entire group is lockedup in separate cages in the middle of the woods. Although well-made andoccasionally very atmospheric, "Territories" inevitably remains aderivative and forgettable effort. The first half of the film isadmirably tense and contains a number of unsettling shock-moments (theinterrogations with the prisoners who are weakening physically as wellas mentally), but still you can't escape the impression you have allseen this a dozen of times before. Then, rather incomprehensibly, thetone swifts during the third act with the introduction of a completelynew protagonist. A hired private detective is on the lookout for themissing tourists and all of a sudden the plot exclusively follows himaround, even to restaurants where he seduces waitresses and his motelroom where he stuffs up his veins with heroin. He confronts thekidnappers a couple of times, but the victims and their continuouslydeteriorating conditions suddenly don't seem all that importantanymore. The acting performances are more than decent and the filminglocations are very effective, but the main impression raised by"Territories" is déjà-vu.
