Thanks to a run of bad luck and go-nowhere jobs, John convinces Russell to join the army so they can get in shape, likening it to a health spa. Once in boot camp, wiseguy John tangles with his by-the-book Sgt. and becomes the unofficial leader for his platoon, made up mostly of other misfits and assorted losers. After somehow making it through graduation, they are given a special assignment but, thanks to Johns romantic interest in a pretty MPO, the other men wind up behind the Iron Curtain until John, Russell, their dates and Sgt. Hulka make a daring rescue attempt in explosive style.

Murray's insouciant performance carries the movie and has inspired countless imitators, from the young Tom Hanks to Jim Carrey and Will Ferrell.

Dave Kehr 20 May 2012

The balance of the film consists of time-tested commercial material, most of which is still working fine.

FALL Iiiin!!!

Working class schleps John Winger(Bill Murray)and Russell Ziskey(HaroldRamis)decide,on a whim,to join the Army, much of the reasoning to escapethe humdrum lives they lead in the big city. Probably not the bestreasoning, but if we had good reasoning added to the mix of manycomedies, they'd seem to cease being comedies now, wouldn't they? Thus we have the seedlings of this largely enjoyable comedy that mixesmany of the ingredients of National Lampoon's Animal House andMeatballs(which were directed and/or written by director Ivan Reitmanand Ramis),which follows the two protagonists thru basic training onthrough their first deployment in Europe. And if you're guessing thatthere's more to the story than merely passing basic training and theirdeployment well, you'd be guessing correctly.A friend of mine who's been in the Army(around the time this movie wasreleased,in fact)told me that the film isn't based in much reality--andI'm sure most people who been in the Army would probably agree--but Ihave the impression that this has JUST enough real element in it tomake it roundly palpable AS WELL as a lot of fun.A fantastic ensemble cast features Warren Oates in one of his lastroles(as their drill Sergeant),John Larroquette(as a preening, weasellysuperior),John Candy(as the gregarious,heavy-set recruit with JUST theright amount of rage issues),John Dietz,P.J.Soles(a sympathetic MP whohas a thing for Murray's character),Sean Young(same as SOles'character, only for Ramis),Conrad Dunn and John Volstead(pre-"Otherbrother Darryl" from Newhart,as Laroquette's oft-put-upon aide)amongothers to fill out as big, loud and enthusiastic ensemble. Three yearslater,Reitman,Murray and Ramis(to name possibly just a few)would tonethis formula down to "PG" for the even more successful comedyGhostbusters. Here, they keep it loose, kinetic and light as a quasi-ColdWar,broadly patriotic usage of about 100 minutes of film viewing.A great watch no matter the medium(big screen,TV,video,DVD). The morerecent DVDs have plenty of back-chatter,tributes and story about themaking. Well, well worth the price if you're up for it,as well as thisshow.

Another Murray/Ramis classic

Ahhh...Bill Murray and Harold Ramis. Is there a better comedy duoin 80's and 90's comedy? I doubt it. Murray stars as a down on hisluck cab driver who decides one day to join the army. Ramis is hisreluctant friend who half-wittingly decides to join with him.Naturally, hilarity ensues. Many great lines. "Any of you guys callme Francis, I'll kill you" "Sgt Hulka is that big toe" John Candy,John Larroquette, and Warren Oates round out the cast.Somewhat loses steam towards the end but worth a space in yourDVD collection. Highly Recommended.

It's just not that funny

Drinking comedies run the risk of being stupid when viewed by thesober. That's the problem with Stripes. The entire film is a BillMurray ego trip, and if you are in the right mood, he can be quiteentertaining. Otherwise, you wonder what else is on TV or if you haveany better, funnier movies in your collection.I generally think highly of Murray's comedy: Ghostbusters, GroundhogDay, What About Bob?; these are all great comedies. The problem withStripes is that Murray seems to think that any anti-establishmentbehavior in the Army is going to come off as totally off the wall whenreally it's just an extended SNL sketch. Harold Ramis is actually muchfunnier and more careful with his comedic timing. Murray is all overthe place, passing punch lines and belaboring others. While Murrayplays with confidence, his performance has such indecisiveness that heseems to have just said whatever came to his mind and gave up on thescript entirely.Conrad Dunn's small part as Psycho was perfect. He made a cartoon outof his character quite successfully. Murray won't take that risk, because no matter what role he's playing, he's never "acting." Younever forget it's Bill Murray saying those lines or doing that crazything. Murray has the Jack Nicholson disease where any character heplays pales in comparison to his own personality, which can be anasset. In this film, it's problematic. Murray gets better at creatingcharacters later in his career, but this film is a dud, and when yousober up, you'll likely agree.

BAAArmy training, SIR!

Who could forget that unmistakable line? Right up there with "This seat's tay-kun" from "Forrest Gump", it's spouted by an American serviceman somewhere in the world on an average of every seven seconds. (That statistic, by the way, is completely made up...although probably not that far from the truth.)"Stripes" is one of the modern classics of just about every military guy's DVD collection, and for good reason. The movie pokes a little fun at the Army while providing a little of everything a guy could ask for in a movie: great comedy actors, guns, sex, mud wrestling, explosions, slapstick, lots of great, quotable lines, and of course the armored Winnebago.Bill Murray shines in a breakthrough role as John Winger, a down-on-his luck cab driver who loses his job, car, apartment, and girlfriend all in the same day. Seeing no other direction, he convinces his buddy Russell Zitskey (Harold Ramis, rocking a stylin' 'fro) to join the Army with him. Of course, with Murray at the helm, comedic hijinks ensue as they meet their drill sergeant (Western legend Warren Oates), the rest of their platoon in basic training (with character staples Judge Reinhold and the late, great John Candy), and the lovely MP's who save their necks more than a few times throughout the film (P.J. Soles and a young Sean...Young). The story follows the recruits as they bumble their way through basic (which they end up getting through on their own after their drill sergeant inadvertently gets mortared), and their first assignment overseas as maintainers of a top-secret government project, which leads to international incidents that must be seen to be believed. The comedy practically writes itself, and with Ivan Reitman directing, it's quite hilarious. Murray gets pretty much free reign in his role as Winger, and shows early signs of his incomparable comic genius that gained him fame on "Saturday Night Live". The lines, the physical movements, all pure Bill, make the whole film that much more enjoyable. Ramis is a decent straight man/sidekick. And their "Gals Friday" are excellent foils to their characters. The plot itself is eye-roll inducing, but being a comedy, requires only the viewer sit back and enjoy it. Almost every member of the platoon stands out character-wise, and contributes hilarity to the story. And what would a Reitman flick be without the obligatory one-liners that folks will be quoting for years to come? The "Extended Cut" DVD has several minutes of deleted scenes; a couple of which actually fill a plot "hole" here and there, some left on the cutting room floor likely for being too "over the top" at the time, even for an "R" rating. The format is user-friendly; you can choose to view the "Extended Edition" of the movie, with the deleted scenes inserted (even showing a little graphic on the screen to let you know when they occur), or you can watch the version shown in theaters and access the deleted scenes from another menu. Not much else is on the DVD itself; the original movie trailer, as well as previews for other hit movies from the '80s, a two-part "making of" featurette, with crew and cast interviews (shot around the time Murray was filming "Lost In Translation"), and the usual director commentary.Overall, this is a great tributary DVD edition of a great classic comedy, and whether you're in the service, or just a fan of Bill Murray's work, you won't be disappointed in this small investment in lasting entertainment. And that's the FACTS, JACK!

Stripes,Comedy At It's Finest !

I was 12 years old when I saw this movie in the theater, and is in myopinion, one of the greatest movies of all time! There are many linesthat I use on almost a daily basis from this movie. How can anybodyforget the humor, non stop antics, and pure genius of this movie.Infact, when I got to Germany from Iraq, and was at the USO;I put thismovie in the player and it immediately brought my sense of humorback. Thanks to all of the cast for one of the greatest movies/comediesof all time!I don't think that anybody else could have played the partof Sgt Hulka like Warren Oates. To quote a favorite line from him "WhenI say jump, you're gonna ask,how high?", as well as "Gutless Punk". Andthen there's the line from Psycho,"all I know is,I finally get to killsomebody". And of course, when John Winger (played by Bill Murray)saysin reply to Sgt Hulka,"I'd like to take a big swing at you, sarge".Sothere you go,a movie for all time, and one I'll always be in the moodto watch!

A Classic Murray Film

I think it's every Americans duty to watch Stripes at least once in their lives. Then you will think twice about wanting to join the army.

Sarcasm rolls off the tongue like a second language...

Have you ever had those moments where you said exactly what you wanted tosay, in exactly the right tone, at exactly the right time? Bill Murray hasthose moments. We're lucky that he has so many of them on screen. Sure, inStripes, or any other movie Murray has ever made, he works from a script, but among all big-screen comedians, only Murray has the ability to makethose carefully memorized lines seem like he came up with them on the spurof the moment. Stripes was the first movie which used this aspect of hisscreen persona to its best advantage. The appeal of Stripes is plain. Can aging hipsters get it together andfulfill the promise that they once saw in themselves without becomingsquares? The movie says, "Yes," and places Winger and Ziske in thatveritable graveyard for hipness, the armed forces. The hook: They're toosmart to be grunts, but not too smart to learn some lessons. That gap iswhere the humor comes from. By turns this movie looks down on the servicelife and shows the advantages of its discipline. Make no mistake, however,it's the hipsters' show. They walk away the heroes.

Very Good Diversion!

This review is from: Stripes (Extended Cut) (DVD) For some reason, I decided to watch the commentary version and It was one of the most memorable commentaries that I have seen. The anecdotes are too cool and definitely put a new spin on an old favorite? Treat yourself to this one. In my opinion, the whole package was done very well

Bill's in the army now!

John Winger(Bill Murray) quits driving taxicabs and enlists in the army with his teacher roommate(Harold Ramis). They experience the typical army life, filled with commanders, guns and best of all, pretty girls. The late John Candy gives great moral support as one of the soldiers. The then-little-known Sean Young is one of the girls whom the guys meet while in the army. One of Murray's most memorable post-Saturday Night Live films. Murray and Ramis later filmed the two GHOSTBUSTERS movies and Ramis directed 1993's GROUNDHOG DAY,starring Murray and Andie MacDowell.

Good for a little fun,but not much

I rented this movie a couple of nights ago. I was thinking Bill Murraywhatdo I got to loose. Well the beginning was excellent. But when they joinedthe army, and started to cause trouble it got bad. For one thing HaroldRamisis no trouble maker. He pulled off his character very badly. I keptthinkingwhen is this going to end. But it only got worse. An Urban Assualt CamperHA! But Stripes gives a few good laughs. Bill Murray is great. Stripes isaguilty pleasure nothing more nothing less.2.5/4

Not my style, but still entertaining.

This review is from: Stripes (Extended Cut) (DVD) For me this is a "watch it every once in a while" movie. My boyfriend picked it out and we watched it together. Funny, but I can only take so much Billy Murray humor in one sitting. The storyline is a bit ridiculous, purposely, and the nudity and "crude-ity" multiply in this extended version. Not offensive, but just something that might be a factor for potential buyers. I'm kind of neutral on this one.

Nowhere as funny as the similar Animal House but quite good if you are in the mood for a no-brainer

Everyone knows that Bill Murray has come a long way from his SNL daysand the mostly embarrassing movies he made through most of the 80's and90's, but it is still fun to see him as just a goofy guy as he plays inthis one. Harold Ramis made his first joint appearance here with Murrayand I must say that they make a pretty good team. Many of theircollaborative efforts like the 2 Ghostbusters movies and theRamis-directed Groundhog day was simply shear hilarity. However,Stripes is not nearly as easy to sit through as those marvels. I don'tknow what it is but it seems that this kind of material has always beenbeneath both Murray and Ramis. If every major player in this filmhadn't made better films than this one you would probably haveforgotten about it in little time. There are some vaguely familiar faces scattered across every minute ofthis film. John Diehl from "Miami Vice" plays a rather dimwittedcharacter, as does Judge Reinhold from "Beverly Hills Cop". Then thereis of course the great John Candy who was a little bit embarrassed todo one particular scene with a pair of not so dressed women but of allthe supporting players he is the one who makes the most of what he isgiven here. Last but not least there is Warren Oates as the gruff butkind of decent Sgt. Hulka. He has his greatest moment when he tells thetotally idiotic character "Psycho" to lighten up. Oh, and I almostforgot the love interests of Ramis and Murray who are quite goodlooking but never rises above their decorative parts. It is funny tothink that Sean Young as one of the ladies was completely forgottenafter only 10 years in the movies, especially when she lost two choiceroles in the 2 first Batman movies. There is not much more to say than this is only entertaining in thefirst part of the movie, mainly because there are so many greatone-liners from Murray but the whole second part involving a missingtank falls flat because this is not "War Games" and to make this intosomething that it's not is just a shame.

5 STAR MOVIE UNRATED EDITION DVD IN DEFECTIVE!

I love this movie but, I am extremely disappointed with this unrated release. The first problem is that even though you can watch the theatrical version of the film, where ever the added scenes were put in, there is a slight pause before going to the next scene! This is inexcusable and it distracts the viewer every time it happens. The extra scenes are worthless so now either version is ruined. This should have been recalled. Great movie worthless DVD!

Funny, but insult to REAL boot camp...

Ok, Ok, This is a great movie because Murray and Ramis make a great team, with either Ramis in front or behind the camera (i.e. Ghostbusters and Groundhog Day}. This film would have received 4 stars except for the lame boot camp scenes. Having been in boot camp myself, this is just plain nonsense. Yes, its funny, but so unbelievable. Boot camp does not consist of the drill instructor(D.I.) sitting around with recruits "getting to know them", EVERYONE has their head shaved, and recruits don't joke around if their D.I. is even within earshot. I know its a comedy, but some things are hard to laugh at. Boot camp is DEFINATELY near the top of the list.

Bill Murray Shines In Brilliant, If Uneven Comedy...

STRIPES, the best service comedy of the 80's, was released during BillMurray's halcyon career years (1979-1984), and has moments of absolutelunacy and imagination, faltering only during the last third of the film.Ashowcase for many rising stars (Harold Ramis, John Candy, JohnLarroquette,Sean Young, Judge Reinhold) and featuring Warren Oates' funniestperformanceon film, it nevertheless is primarily Murray's show, and he delivers, brilliantly! As an arrogant but likable loser who thrives on twisting the 'rules' tosuithim, Murray combines physical humor, sly one-liners, and ananti-establishment point of view to establish himself as the logicalsuccessor to the anarchists of ANIMAL HOUSE. His character, John Winger, isnot only a jerk, but charismatic enough to make being a smartassdesirable! After losing his girl, his job, his home, and even his pizza ("Thendepression set in," he announces), he sees a TV commercial for the Army, andconvinces his friend Russell Ziskey (sweetly played by Harold Ramis), anEnglish language teacher who's better at teaching cuss words to hisstudentsthan English, to drop everything and enlist with him.Basic is a challenge for Winger, as the Army expects him to be a soldier!Ina unit comprised of idiots, psychopaths, potheads, and an overweightrecruitwho enlisted to "shed a few pounds" in a 'Club Med'-style environment(JohnCandy, who is very funny), Winger immediately attempts to take charge, onlyto be put down by gruff drill instructor, Sgt. Hulka (Warren Oates), whoiswise to all of Winger's scams. Not that this interferes with Winger andZiskey's social life; the pair soon have MP girlfriends (P.J. Soles andSeanYoung) sharing trysts in the General's quarters! The film's highlight occurs after Sgt. Hulka is incapacitated by anexploding grenade. Faced with having to start basic training all overagain,Winger coaches the unit overnight in HIS kind of drill for the finalReviewand Parade. Unfortunately, everyone then oversleeps, and arrive at theParade Ground in all manner of dress. Winger's unorthodox marchingroutinesare a hit, however, and the General, thinking he is watching a crackoutfit, addresses Winger in one of the funniest exchanges ever recorded onfilm!Unfortunately, STRIPES doesn't end with Winger's completion of basictraining, but moves to Europe, where the unit (and Sgt. Hulka) areassignedto guard an attack vehicle that looks suspiciously like an RV. Whilethereare a few amusing moments in this final chapter of the film, it lacks theinspired madness of basic training, and drags, a bit, until the famous'Magazine Cover' postscript. All in all, STRIPES is a memorable, if flawed near-classic, and paved theway for Murray and Ramis' blockbuster, GHOSTBUSTERS. If you're a BillMurrayor service comedy fan, it should not be missed!
