An actually good Musical-turn-movie

I saw this when I was only a little boy, but to this day I can still pop it in the DVD player or the VCR and enjoy the music and acting and just the wonderful vibe it puts out. This was origionaly a musical on broadway and I think Hollywood did a smart thing by making it into a movie and it has become a classic.Ovewr the summer, Danny and Sandy meet, and seem like the perfect match, but when they suprisingly meet up at the sma eschool the following fall, Danny must keep up his reputation with the T-birds as a tough, macho guy, and at a pep ralley, meets Sandy and makes a fool out of himself saying that the Danny over the summer is gone. Now Sandy wants nothing to do with him and forms a friendship with some off the wall pink ladies and one night, Rizzo goes off and sleeps with kenicky ( spelling? ) and gets pregnant and later in the movie this becomes a big thing at a drive in. And so the story goes with Danny and Sandy going through ups and downs of a relationship, and then singing about them, and I have to say that the end still gives me goose bumps. I don't know what it is, that fact of Olivia newton-john in tight clothes or the singing and fuzzy feling, but it is a great scene. This is definitaly a good moive and any one of all ages can enjoy it and understand it, except for some language. It is a truely great piece of work!

Grease is the word that you heard!

I've seen this movie probably over 200 times by now. I used to watch itevery week when I was at school and even now it's as much fun as it alwayswas. John Travolta and Olivia Newton John are perfectly cast and theexcellent songs like "Grease", "Hopelessly Devoted to you" and "SummerNights" are extremely well staged and performed. It's also fun to see againin the cinema since its 1998 re-issue.

A great movie which has to be seen...

One day my mother deleted this wonderful movie by accident and of causeshe had to buy me a brand new copy! So now I enjoy this tape frequentlyat every occasion. So now I have watched the movie about 65 times, notkidding! And once when I was ill I saw it 3 times in a day for severaldays! So bottom line: i love Grease! Best movie ever made:D And in theend of the day it is hard to find a so delicate movie as Grease becauseit tells a whole story mostly through songs and expressions. As the oldsaying: one picture( in this case many pictures) can tell more than athousand words..The main character in the movie are perfect for eachother and learn very much from each other. They take something withthem from the other one's life and use it in their own.

Grease is fantastic!

I really love the songs in Grease since they are so energetic and exciting, especially Greased Lightning. John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John are great actors. This movie is terrific for both kids and adults. I'd recommend this movie to anyone who likes rock and roll!

One of the most annoying movies of all time...

I guess if you like the whole nonsensical feeling of musicals and theblandwhite bread humor of Americas Funniest videos you would probably likethismovie too... Personally, I hate musicals (except for the BluesBrothers).Thank God that John Travolta learned how to act later in his career. Iguess this is supposed to be a classic, but I have never been able tostandit. Horrible over the top acting broken up by ridiculous song and dancenumbers... UGH!!!

It's the One That I Want

John Travolta and Olivia Newton John share amazing on screen chemistry in this comedy/drama about two teenagers falling in love one summer night. Travolta's struggle to overcome his ego and to impress his friends becomes less and less important as he begins to realize that Newton-John is the One That He Wants! It is a classic love story meets ruthless comedy. The music is fantastic. Grease shall go down in history as one of the greatest musicals of all time!

I have to

Sorry, but I have to be partial on this movie. I was named after the leadcharacter. My mother was a huge John Travolta fan and my father a hugeOlivia Newton John fan. Then of course I had to be born in 1979. All thataside I love this movie. It has been a big part of my life growing up.Themusic is great. I love all the actors in it, besides Olivia and John. Oneof my favorite actresses is Stockard Channing.

ONE OF MY FAVORITE EVER!!!!!!

Gorgeous, amazing movie, Grease is the word, and it will remain forever! This movie has EVERYTHING you can ask! Great songs, cute plot, humor, and ofcourse, JOHN TRAVOLTA... don't watch if you don't wanna get a crush on him!:)Every time you see this movie you feel excitement, you are just attached tothe screen with a smile on your face... You can watch it over and overagain, and every time it will be just as enjoying as the previous time, itgets even better every time! Even when you think "ohh not again, I know itby heart", and then you nonetheless watch it again - you never tired of it,you just love it more and more! It's certainly one of the best movies ever made!!!There is no words to describe it properly. You must see it, and I promiseyou you'll fall in love with it till the rest of your life!100 out of 10.. :)

Is Grease still the word?

Of course it is! Twenty years on from its original release, good to see itdoing the rounds at the cinemas again to ravereviews. I think that it was probably the last great musicalthat will ever be made, a thought which saddens me....buttimes,attitudes and financial considerations have changed. The cast of the film perform as one unit....the interplay between thevarious character parts is at times electric. The songs and dance routinesare simply marvellous. All the ingredients of a cinema classic are there forall too see. It ismy mother's favourite film, my favourite film and my childrens'favourite film. Three generations can't be wrong!

The Word...

John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John lead the all-singing, all-dancingtroupe through 2-and-a-half hours of summer lovin', school fun, first love, fast cars and through the highest-grossing high-school film todate.'Grease' is a musical comedy about cool dude Danny Zuko (Travolta)'s summerromance with slightly geeky Sandy Olsen (Newton-John). But when she arrivesat his school, he denies even knowing her, breaking herheart.Through the course of the movie we also get to know the rest of the T-Birds(like Jeff Conaway) and the Pink Ladies (including Stockard Channing andDidi Conn). There's heaps of good songs on here ('You're The One That I Want', 'SummerLovin', 'Hopelessly Devoted To You', 'We Go Together') and they couldn'thave picked a sweeter girl to play Sandy than Olivia Newton-John!Lots of fun for all the family, very enjoyable... a classic.

Timeless Fun

I first saw Grease when I was nine years old and have grown up with it up until today. Looking back, I can't believe how much of the sexual innuedo I didn't understand when I watched it for the first time! (John Travolta wiping siren wrap over his crotch, A screen with a hotdog jumping into a bun while Travolta is singing "Stranded at the Drive-In")What makes this movie so special is simply the quality- maybe it doesn't have the special effects or a message you can live your life by, but it is one of the most fun, timeless pieces of work you will see for years to come. Trust me, you will NEVER get tired of it. If you can, try seeing it in a theatre because with twenty other girls in front of you singing along to Summer Nights, it will be ten times more difficult to get those infectious songs out of your head.

It's improved with age...

The movie has proved more durable than anyone would have thought. Ittook substantial critical hits for being a Califoria-ized,Olivia-Newton-John-ized adaptation of a beloved, long-running New Yorkshow. At least, we mused at the time, they changed the story so theywouldn't have to make Ms Newton-John affect any sort of Americanaccent: certainly not a New York one.And yet it seems to stand up well on its own. The New Yorker observedat the time that nobody involved with this movie was alive during theera it was supposed to depict, but they clearly had a fine time withthe music. Yes, the scenes were clearly from sunny 1970's California, but this didn't bother the kids who saw this in 1978, and enough timehas passed that it shouldn't bother us who remember that it wassupposed to be in Brooklyn, in the '50's.Have fun, kids.

Greed Is the Word

This review is from: Grease (Widescreen Edition) (DVD) Other reviewers have noted that this DVD edition offers nothing different from the VHS version released only a couple of years ago. Note also that this edition does not come from the original film elements. Aside from the dirtiness of the print, the lack of extra scenes and the like, notice that most of the Coca-Cola ads have been "fuzzed" out. The image boost of the DVD image makes this alteration particularly clear. It's bad enough that Paramount was willing to alter the film in order to appease a corporate partner during an earlier release of the videotape; it's terrible that we are still saddled with the so-so, handmedown digital remastering of a corrupted print. Director Randal Kleiser has revealed in a September 2002 interview with ... that Paramount plans a reissue in 2004, a version with more extras; potential purchasers who have not yet bought this version may want to hold out a little longer. I should have been more patient.

Edward Guthmann 02 May 2012

The friskiness of the performers, the choreography by Patricia Birch and most of all Travolta's phenomenal charm give it its value.

Good movie, Loses in transfer from stage

I used to be totally in love with this movie, but then I was in the stage production. To my surprise, the stage production is a lot different, and a lot better than the movie! There is a loss of, what I think were the best songs in the play ("Mooning," "Shakin' at the High School Hop," "Those Magic Changes,' just to name a few)! I can't watch Grease anymore without thinking of it's potential as is was on the stage.
