1662. Paris starves while youthful Louis XIV debauches young women and wastes the treasury on war. The captain of his guard, DArtagnan, protects him from conspirators. Louis casts his eye on penniless Christine, the sweetheart of Raoul, a soldier and only son of retired musketeer, Athos. To have Christine, Louis sends Raoul to harms way on the front. To kill the leader of the conspirators, the king calls in ex-musketeer Aramis, now a priest, accompanied by the Falstaffian Porthos. The queen mother, in widows weeds, grieves in her chapel, and in the Bastille rots a solitary prisoner, face locked in an iron mask. Perfidy, silence, loyalty, rage, and guilt are set to collide.

Excellent

Not being a huge fan of Leonardo DeCaprio, I found this movie to be just phenomenal. It didn't get the credit it originally deserved. It has some excellent acting by all of the cast, and a plot that keeps you in the seat. This is a must-see!

A nearly great movie.

I had not considered seeing this movie mainly because I am not a Leo fan. However I caught it on cable and was stunned. I bought myself a copy the next day. My 16 year old son thinks I am crazy because I have watched it 10 times in 2 weeks.Leo did well, but Gabriel Byrne was outstanding. I especially love the last thirty minutes.

DiCaprio's style

I do not prefer Dicaprio in this kind of movie. It is identical with the 'Cangs of New York' and this is not Di Caprio's style.Movies like "Titanic" and "Catch me if you can" are closer to him.Well the story has good parts the film has good visuals but the acting is a big disadvantage for me.

A welcome addition to my blueray library

This review is from: The Man In The Iron Mask (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) (Blu-ray) I have a hard time upgrading to many blueray movies especially on older films, however this is an exception. Visually the palace scenes truly "pop" with color and the soundtrack sounds magnificent. A true blueray gem for any nostalgic movie buff.

pretty good film

You know, Randall Wallace wound up on my list of "sucky dudes" when hemangled the face of history in "Braveheart". I find it tragically ironicthat oodles of people have now criticized Wallace for mangling a fictionalwork. God forbid he should screw with the plot of a film that's been, inone form or another, done about five times. *sigh* Filmgoers of the world, you never cease to amaze me...Anyway, I thought this film was very well-done. I know very little aboutthe actual history of the setting, but at least it's clear to all involvedthat this film was based on a work of _fiction_ by Dumas. The charactersare archetypes, but they are, IMO, appropriate. Once again, I find itamazing that people would complain about the depth (or lack thereof) of thecharacters in tMitIM. This is the guy who made "Braveheart", people. Greatly exaggerated characters, anyone? Louis is pretty much unredeemablyevil. D'Artagnan is endlessly loyal and hopeful. Phillipe is _all_ good. This is high adventure, and it was, IMO, well done.

movie is so-so

I thought some of the acting was mediocre (including wonder boy LeoDC). The eyes and mouth of the mask wearer were always perfectlyaligned -- obviously the mask would have to be customized for eachindividual. When don't-care-about-anybody Louis discovers his motherwas part of the plot, he does nothing with/to her, although hegratuitously executes others for no valid reason. When the mask isremoved after six years (the fire showing through the eye and mouthopenings is corny) his face is clean and minty fresh, has little hair, etc. Wouldn't hair grow over his mouth? Wouldn't an iron mask leave"rust stains" when he sweats? Wouldn't his face be filthy? Give me abreak.

What actor in his forties would not want to be a Musketeer?

I know why I like this movie and it is simply because "The Man in the Iron Mask" does for swordplay movies what "Space Cowboys" did for space movies. It allowed a bunch of older actors to have fun in parts usually reserved for the younger set. I can just imagine John Malkovich's eyes lighting up at the thought of somebody asking him to play one of the Three Musketeers (Athos). The same goes for Jeremy Irons (Aramis), Gerard Depardieu (Porthos) and Gabriel Byrne (D'Artagnan). The key line for me in the movie is when Lieutenant Andre (Edward Atterton) points to D'Artagnan and says "All of my life all I ever wanted to be was HIM." But you can substitute any one of the Musketeers in that statement. I just cannot imagine any Hollywood actor of my age turning down this script. You get to be one of the Three Musketeers! So I am onboard for the fun. This is a solid "B" movie and I do not care that Leonardo DiCaprio is the big name at the top of the cast list. He is a talent actor, but as in "William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet" he once again shows he does not have a feel for the diction of costume drama; but his Phillippe is a much richer performance than his King Louis. Yes, I can list lots of other problems with this film. Depardieu and Judith Godreche as Christine are the only ones running around with "real" French accents for one thing. But the film is, all things considered, fairly faithful to the Alexandre Dumas novel (by Hollywood standards) until the final act. I actually liked the "twist" by writer-director Randall Wallace and was not bothered that the survival rate of the Musketeer quarter is the exact opposite in the film that it was in the novel. But above all I liked watching Malkovich, whose ability to provide nuance into underplaying a role is exquisite and it is so much fun watching him draw his swords and have at it. Depardieu has fun as the bawdry brawler of the bunch, although the script relegates him to the comic relief part of the festivities. Irons provides the most panache of the quartet and the twinkle in his eyes as Aramis hatches his master plan to restore the honor of France counterbalances the deadness in the eyes of Athos after the death of his son. Byrne gets to play a pillar of virtue and his character is more a reflection of the good opinion of everybody else. It is only in his affection for Queen Anne (Anne Parillaud in a dignified but heartfelt performance) and his attempts to instruct Louis that his heart comes through. "The Man in the Iron Mask" is, like the novel, not a great story but more of a grand adventure.

A decent drama

This is by no means historically accurate but as a movie, it works. The actors all do a fine job portaying the famous characters, especially Gabriel Byrne. But really, with the cast that includes John Malkovich, Jeremy Irons and Leonardo Dicaprio, you really can't go wrong. I thought it was a tad long, but didn't really drag. Also, it doesn't really follow the historic novel, from what I can recall, so if you are looking for accuracy, look somewhere else. Otherwise, you can be entertained by it as is.

I like this movie but not because of Leo

I have never really liked Leonardo DeCaprio but I loved this movie. The men who play the Three Musketeers are wonderful and I love the romance between D'artagnean and the Queen Mother. Just ignore Leonardo DeCaprio and you'll be fine watching this movie.

Dicaprio shines playing a double role along with the formidable musketeers

The picture is a new version of Alexandre Dumas's and is set in 17thcentury French court ,where a twins, one evil monarch LouisXIV(DiCaprio)of France and the other Phillippe(DiCaprio in a dual role)is imprisoned in the Bastilla as inmate number 6943800 that hides hisidentity wearing an iron mask. Both are sons of the Queen MotherAnne(Anne Parillaud). The king lust for girlfriend(Judith Godreche) ofAthos's son(Peter Sarsgaard)leads to the summit of the drearymusketeers, thus: Dartagnan(Gabriel Byrne)the brave;Athos(JohnMalkovich)the responsible father;Portos(Gerard Depardieu)thejoker(though with flatulence) and Father Priest Aramis(JeremyIrons). They join forces for royal vengeance with the shout : ¨One forall and all for one¨.They are planning a plot involving substitution bythe lookalike brother. It's a good adaptation with big budget in this brooding renditionclassic tale with derring-do,intrigue,romance,action and excitingswordplay. An excellent casting and lavish production shot in Francemake for a fairly amusement swashbuckler.Glimmer and watchablecinematography by Peter Suschizsky who reflects stunningly Frenchpalaces(Versalles),gardens and interior-exterior scenarios.Besides theatmospheric and spectacular music score is by Nick Glennie Smith.Subsequently remade numerous times for big screen and television.Thus,1929 by Alan Dawn with Douglas Fairbanks,1939 by James Whale withLous Hayward, 1977 TV rendition with Richard Chamberlain. The film iswell realized by usual screenwriter(Braveheart)and first time directorRandal Wallace. The motion picture will like to costume dramaenthusiastic and DiCaprio fans.

Are we in France, England, or what?

Several things about this movie were very good. The costumes, thechoreography, and especially the amazing cast of actors that were broughttogether. Unfortunately, one thing about this production brought all of itcrashing to the floor. (No, I'm not going to say it was Leo, he's one ofthe best young actors in the business.) It was the accents. The accentswould not have bothered me if the director had decided on one. But havingthe lead characters all sound like they're from different parts of the world- that's bizarre and jarring. I could have accepted American accents in oldFrance, and Leo and Malkavich had very pronounced modern American accents,if everybody had an American accent. But then, you had Jeremy Irons andGabriel Byrne in there sounding British, and to top it all off, you had goodol' Gerard who not only has a French accent, but sounds as though Englishdoes not come naturally to him at all. This poor conglomeration of accentsonly served to remind me that I was watching a Hollywood movie. It isunfortunate, but I could not bring myself to like the movie as a result. Which is too bad. The other elements seemed pretty good, although I have noidea why nobody got shot at the end. Sorry, was I supposed to get somethingthere that just didn't make sense? Anyway, probably a good movie, but the mixed voices were really grating onmy nerves. I just couldn't adjust to it.

An Excellent Film With An All Star Cast

This IS NOT Joseph. I am one of his daughters. The Man in the Iron Mask is an excellent movie with a good plot and great actors to pull it off, such as Leonardo, John, and Gabriel.I love Leonardo. He is a great actor and this movie definitely shows it. He portrays Louis and Phillipe perfectly and definitely brings out the foil between the two characters (foil: a set of characters who are exact opposites ex. good and bad).Another good actor was Gabriel Bryne (the one that played D'artangan). He was very noble and sophisticated. The settings in the movie are very beautiful too such as the grounds for the Pig Chase and the area outside of Anne's house. I consider them as having a huge role in the movie as well.Trust me, DO NOT pass this movie up. It is very good. I also recommend the soundtrack of the movie as well.

Hollywood Big Budget

Its amazing people think this was "amazing". I guess standards have really been lowered nowadays. I don't understand Di Caprio's appeal. Honestly, he looked like a girl in this movie. Which is great if you like boy's who look like girls. I think Depardieu is more appealing. Gabriel Byrne was the most convincing and entertaining actor. The little mustache worked for me. If you want lighthearted entertainment and have a few laughs even when its not supposed to be funny, you'll like this one.

how one secret can stop a war....

France is sufering at the hands of it's cruel king, Louis XIV. The young king has bankrupt France with terrible wars. The people of France are straving and the King does nothing about it. Also the King has earned himself quite the reputation of being a womanizer. The three Musketeers have retired from thier posts, all enjoying thier private lives. After a friendly encounter between King Louis, D'Artagnan chief of the Musketeers, Athos, his son Raoul and his soon to be daughter-in-law, Christine. King Louis has eyes for Christine and arranges for Raoul to be killed in battle. When Louis success in doing that, the three Musketeers decide that something must be done about Louis. But, when they try and get D'Artagnan to help. He mysterously refuses to help, cause he is honor bound not to betray his king. So Aramis comes up with a plan that may work without the need for betrayal or any bloodshed. Aramis tells the other musketeers, that there maybe a person who can stop Louis, A prisoner who wears an iron mask and who has been keep in the Bastille of France for many years. It seems Louis is very afraid of this prisoner, and that's why his face is hidden by the mask. Just who is this man in the iron mask and how he can change the fate of France? This wasn't a bad film. John Malkovich was very execllent as Athos. This is one of his strongest films today.

Laughably awful adaptation with great cast.

I rarely have laughed this much in such an awful film. Randal Wallace(screenwriter of BRAVEHEART) directs this Dumas adaptation and manages thealmost impossible: he takes a great book and a great task and makes a deeplyflawed film. The dialogues are unintentionally funny. The four musketeersoveract badly - which yet again causes many laughs. Leo DiCaprio tries toresist the obvious overacting traps a double role offers - not alwayssuccessful. And couldn't anyone have insisted on only ONE pronounciation ofthe name D'Artagnan? Now we hear British, French, and a couple of Americanversions - by people who are all supposedly French. Well, nevermind. It's agood laugh. Who cares then that it actually is supposed to be a historicalaction-thriller...

A Very Good Movie Spoiled by One Miscast!

An otherwise excellent movie spoiled by one miscast. Good story, good adaptation and good acting but DiCaprio is just NOT The Type to play the role of Louis XIV, not to mention his frequent mispronunciation of the names of the major characters. What a shame!

Aughh. Urgh. Eek. Blech.

Horrific acting on almost everyone's part (including Monsieur Leonardo's). The dancing was devised in a nightmare sequence, no? What was with the Irish folk music at the end? And...shudder...what happened to the historical accuracy? Louis 14th's reign was anything but peaceful...the man in the iron mask was, in reality, probably a bastard son of his (and it would have been just as interesting that way, too--c'mon Hollywood, have some creativity). Louis' hair was not blonde. (Was that a wig or what? it didn't look like one to me.) And, I regret to repeat this again (but I mustmustmust): the dancing was hideous. And another thing... "Louis, I'm your daddy!" Eeeek. "I have no right to the throne..." Did he say that? No. "Oh. Oh, really? Why, my mother really is a little...dishonest, wouldn't you say? Poor Papa--err, you get it." French monarchs' births were (don't flinch) practically public, anyway; I'm certain some noble would have gone: "Jesus Christ--TWO CHILDREN." Alexander Dumas could pull it off. Hollywood couldn't. Did I miss something? Hmmmm. Maybe. Do I care? No.

The Third Rate Film in the Iron Mask

Based on a novel by Alexander Dumas, "The Man in the Iron Mask" is ostensibly a film about a benign peasant (played by Leonardo Dicarpio) who is released from a horrible form of imprisonment and who subsequently switches places with an evil king(also played by Leonardo DiCaprio) who looks just like him, though I think it should be called the "excrement in the iron mask." Leo lovers might find the first half of this film disappointing since the great one plays an out and out brown eye who treats his attendants like human toxic discharge. In one notable scene, Leo the bad decides that he really wants to have his love gardener water the pink tulip of a hot aristocratic chick but he can't because she's in love with her boy friend. Leo contrives to have the boy friend sent to the wars where honor compels him to fight in the front lines, virtually ensuring his death. Once this plan is executed to completion, Leo offers the grieving lover his condolences by having his love chef sprinkle some parmisan on her passionate lasagna. But after he thrashes her a number of times, the woman receives a letter sent from her boyfriend written before his demise that explains the wretched king's plan. The timing of this letter is most unfortunate since the damsel receives it just as Leo the good appears on the scene. One would hope that Leo the good would have a chance to anoint her with his pink scepter, but unfortunately, he just gets a dance and an undeserved upbraiding before she kills herself.Aside from the annoyance of Leo, this film does the four musketeers a terrible disservice converting them from swaggering he-men of the Thirty Years War to a bunch of late Twentieth Century ninnies. This is particularly sad in the case of Athos who is the most fascinating muskateer in both the novel and the two seventies films in which he was played by Oliver Reed. In this film he is played by a wonderful actor, John Malkovich, but is cast in a whiny, and ineffectual role. Similarly, Dartagnan skulks through the entire film apparently upset by the fact that he knocked up his liege lord's wife many years ago. If anything, he should be upset by the fact that his spermicidal indiscretion produced a second Leonardo Dicaprio. The only viable dramatic force in this film is Jeremy Irons who plays an intense and secretive Aramis...

A Major Dissappoinment

Leonald Maltin is the film critic I respect the most, but this time I must disagree: this version is lame. Gerard Depardieu is the only thing that makes it worth a look.
