In 1980, "Fame" was the little movie that could. It developed animmediate cult following, made Irene Cara a star, the title tune won anAcademy Award, and a short-lived television series emerged. So was itan inspired idea to redo a movie that hasn't lost its popularity overthe years? Let's just say this contemporary version is redundant as amakeover, but as a stand-alone film it's unadulterated fun. It featuresboth Cara hits ("Out Here on My Own," "Fame"), here sung by NaturiNaughton, a highly gifted performer, who is surrounded by a talentedyoung ensemble of dancers, musicians and - duh! - actors. Besides, it'salways a joy to see Bebe Neuwirth, Kelsey Grammar, and William S.Dutton strutting their stuff. But it's Will & Grace's Megan Mullallywho leaves you holding your breath. Her rendition of "You TookAdvantage of Me" stops the show.

This review is from: Fame (Extended Dance Edition) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) I almost didn't get this to play on my bluray player. I may need a firmware upgrade. Anyway the movie was good however I was thinking there would be more dancing in the movie....from what I remember from the older one. also the girl that was on 'so you think you can dance' really wasn't in the movie very much and that was a big advertising point for the movie.

The world has hardly been breathlessly awaiting a new version of Fame and an older generation will probably find it uncomfortably corny with showbusiness schmaltz smoothing away the rougher edges of the more adult original.

I really enjoyed seeing how talented they were, and it gets you feelingrhythmic. At first, I thought it was going to be a good movie, seeinghow the auditions went. But, after that part and they went ontofreshman year, I got a little disappointed. They showed the students'problems, and what they're going through to make it to be famous, butit almost seems like the director got bored of the movie itself, andjust skipped through a lot in the movie. You don't see how thestudents' problems were faced and how they were solved, you first seethem upset, and then at the end, they're happy and ready to graduate? That's not a very good plot, actually, there isn't a plot at all. I amupset with the movie, but the dancing was great. Overall, it really wasenjoyable.

a totally unoriginal and unnecessary remake that runs far, far away from anything edgy, controversial or interesting.

This film is just awful. I didn't want to see it, but my mom did wantto see it. I did like musicals, so I went. It was like "Rent" or "Inthe Heights", without lovable characters, a good plot, or necessarydevelopment. The only good feeling was an awkward Megan Mullalysinging. By the way, why is Megan Mullaly in this movie?! The same goesfor Kesley Grammar. And Debbie Allen. Well, she was in the originalmovie, but she shouldn't be in this movie still. At only one point didI think. I was thinking of better times than this!!! Just take my wordfor it. If you read my reviews, I just praise everything. Well, notthis time! Just an awful, terrible movie. The worst movie of 2009.

This review is from: Fame (Extended Dance Edition) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) I bought this for my wife's birthday. We discovered later, to her great disappointment, that this is a remake of the original "Fame" and not as good, not what she expected, not what I thought I had bought. So, note for you -THIS IS NOT THE ORIGINAL "FAME" !!

Seems a bit lackluster next to the original, 1980 Oscar winner.

Somewhere, someone took an awful turn and decided that the original"Fame," a seminal work, wasn't good enough and made it into an episodeof "Hannah Montana." But this did confirm that dancing and singing have in fact gotten worsein 30 years. At best, 2009 has nothing new to offer. The final insult is the "we worked so hard" in the 2009 versioncompared to the grandeur of "I sing the body electric." And the"African" drums are just a PC waste of everyone's time. Millennial self-referential claptrap. At best it is a sad shadow of what was before. At worst it is the best the millennials have to offer.

If any of you are wondering, this is not like High School Musical.Shockingly, this is a very good remake (well, I wouldn't say it's aremake but an updated version but many people call it a remake). Thestudents are very likable and the acting is so-so, the actress whostuck out with her fantastic singing voice was Naturi Naughton and herversion of the songs "Out Here On My Own" and "Fame" were brilliant. The dance sequences were phenomenal and actually made you want to getoff your seat and join them. The storyline was good and it sent theusual message this type of movie sends and delivers the whole 'you canmake it if you believe in you' message which worked as it would in thismovie.I'm genuinely surprised as this was better than I expected it to be butit's not better than the original. My criticisms are that one or two ofthe actors had their moments of great acting and then it went to poorhowever this wouldn't put you off the movie as the singing and dancingtriumphs. Another criticism is that there wasn't enough Naturi Naughtonfor me, I wanted to hear her sing more, her voice is phenomenal! Forme, I thought it was fantastic and I'm shocked at how much I liked it.If you're a fan of the 80's Fame, then you'll love this! This is twohours of feel-good fun.Read more reviews at: www.dudedazzmoviereviews.wordpress.com

The '80s sensation is reborn for the High School Musical generation. But sadly, this one's all fame, no journey.

This is nothing but a High School Musical and a really bad one at that.It has nothing like the gritty down to earth feeling of the originaland there was little or no character development. To break the movie out into years at school there were these occasionalgraphics indicating freshmen, Sophomore and the like. The only issue isthey spent less than 15min in each year and the result was littleactual development of the characters through the movie. Can Allan Parker please do a "reboot" of Fame and we can all pretendthat this 2009 version wasn't made. If your around 12 years old and like that Walt Disney "High SchoolMusical" Theme, watch Glee on TV, your going to get a lot more out ofit. Everyone else, buy the original on DVD and stay at home!

This review is from: Fame (DVD) I have been trying to find a deal on this movie for months now, all other stores and websites sell it for $19.99, I found it on here with shipping for the low price of $11.86, can't beat that!!!!!
Christopher Tookey 18 April 2012
Virtually everything about Allison Burnett's screenplay is blander, dumber and less daring than the original.
Matthew Connolly 18 April 2012
Like its gifted if excitable protagonists, Fame would have done well to stay in the classroom a bit more, rather than trolling the New York streets.

I haven't read what the critics say about this movie, I just noticedthat the IMDb rating is rather low. But taken for what it is, and notcomparing it to the original, this edition of "Fame" is a nicelyentertaining movie.I enjoyed it especially because it portrays the struggles of young menand young women who are talented and want to make their lives in theperformance arts world. It actually helps to view the DVD extra, maybeeven first, where each of the young stars are profiled in a minute ortwo. In viewing that you find that the actors in their real lives arevery similar to the characters in the movie. The story presented here covers almost 4 years, from the youngstersauditioning for admission to the PA high school, through graduation. Itis told mostly linearly, and features the struggles of several of thecharacters.Kay Panabaker, really a teen during shooting, is Jenny Garrison. She istalented but naive, and she has some difficulty fully expressingherself, as a singer and as an actor. Her path is to learn to freeherself.Naturi Naughton is Denise Dupree, a classically trained pianist, ofstrict parents who expert her to pursue a career in classical music. They don't even know she sings, but she has probably the best voice ofall the students we see. Her journey is to find her real voice, and forher parents to accept that.Kherington Payne, also a teen during filming, is Alice Ellerton, whohas been dancing all her life. She and her parents are frank about hergoing to PA, she needs training but as soon as a professionalopportunity comes along, she is gone with it. Also to the dismay of herboyfriend. In a good touch towards realism, real Broadway star Bebe Neuwirth isMs. Kraft, the dance instructor. Debbie Allen, part of the older Famemovie, is Ms. Angela Simms. Charles S. Dutton is teacher Mr. JamesDowd. And in a small role Kelsey Grammar is faculty member Mr. MartinCranston. There are a number of other characters and equally compelling stories.I don't know why anyone who enjoys singing, dancing, theater, thosesorts of things would rate this movie lower than 5 or 6 or 7.

The production numbers are great, sometimes jaw-droppingly so.
Linda Winer 14 April 2012
A big, bland and bogus clone of a movie update, which runs a half-hour less than the original and only feels like forever.
14 April 2012
What a disappointment. The youger cast was untalented while the older cast was under utilized. The music was forgettable and the dancing was only so-so. There were no standout performances and no credible plot. Skip this film and get the original Fame instead...now that was a fun film!

Members of the class of '80 struggled to stay in school despite homelessness and crime; the greatest crisis in '09 finds a student's Sesame Street work schedule affecting her GPA.
