Everyone walked out of theater with one unanimous opinion THIS MOVIE WAS A WASTE OF TIME! There was nothing redeeming about it - crazy story that made no sense what so ever, not funny at all.

The Men Who Stare At Goats is based upon the book of the same name byJon Ronson. At times the film claims to have parts that are based on atrue story, but I think each individual who watches the film will comeout of it with a firm opinion on that matter, whether they think itcould possibly be true, or the complete and total opposite. I am sureanyone who is interested in the film, or is at least curious about it,has probably seen the film's trailer, or has read movie reviews on it.For that reason I really do not want to talk about the plot of the filmbecause I really do not want to give anything else away that may havealready been shown, or talked about in other reviews, or the film'strailer. That being said I was not entirely sure what type of film thiswould be, or what kind of lasting effect it would have on me, butoverall I was pretty satisfied. I definitely have to give the cast andcrew credit for making a film like this because it is so bizarre and inmany ways brilliantly unique and I am sure that there are enoughstudios and actors and directors who would pass up this material forthat reason, so I definitely admire this cast and crew for going aheadand making a movie like this. Other than being really impressed by thefilm's unique story (if you can call it that in loose terms), or justby it's style and direction, I also found it to be quite captivatingand there were definitely a lot of laugh out loud moments during it andit is definitely not a boring film and again whether you decide whatyou are watching is true, or the strangest and most unbelievable thingthat you have ever heard, or in this case seen, I still guarantee thatyou will be interested and want to see where the director goes with it.The comedic performances here are all right on target and well done. They do justice to the material as does the director, screenwriter andthe music set to the film really emphasizes it's style and the era andstate of mind that it is trying to get across. In other words it iswell done. At times the film is very ridiculous and as far out there asyou can possibly get, but like I said earlier, it is very interestingand makes for quite an entertaining watch. I again applaud theindividuals who brought this to the screen, because they have done afilm like no other and for that reason alone The Men Who Stare At Goatsis worth seeing at least once because it is quite different from anyother film this year and stands on it's own for originality andludicrous humour. Recommended for at least one watch and for those whoare curious about it.

This film is about a journalist who goes to Iraq to find his ultimatestory to prove to his wife the value of existence. He then travels withan eccentric ex American secret agent who claims to have supernaturalabilities."The Men Who Stare at Goats" may have a great concept, butunfortunately it is not developed to anywhere interesting. It is a mixof comedy, action, drama and sci-fi. None of these elements aredeveloped enough to make it stand out or make it shine. The plot isthin and underdeveloped, it cannot decide whether it wants to convinceme there are supernatural powers or makes me shiver due to all thecomplicated politics in the army. It does not make me care about thecharacters or what they do either. The ending conflict is so weaklystaged which feels so contrived. The end result of the film is aconfusing and dull collection of scenes.

this movie had an all star cast, too bad it went to crap with a mediocre story and direction. this movie had it's funny one-liners and moments at times, but overall just boring and redundent. george clooney is probley the only reason this movie did not get straight F's across the board. i wanted to see this movie when it first came out because the trailer looked awesome, good thing i didnt waste my 10$ and got the movie with my netlix monthly subscription.....i say if you must see this movie and think you have to try to get it in your netflix so you get more for your money or get it at a buy one get one free deal at your local video rental store....

I haven't written a review for a film before, but I had to sign up justto review this one. This film has absolutely no plot, no point ormeaning to it and a terrible script directed, CLEARLY, by an idiot. Donot waste your money on this film. I thought Clooney or Spacey couldn'tdo a bad film, but I have been proved wrong with this atrocity. Thefilm title is also misleading as it is only about one man who stares atgoats, not several. Also, the powers they are supposed to have are:non-existent. So many nonsensical topics brought up here, and the armypresence has nothing to do with the film at all. Nonsense. Rubbish.Crap. Terrible. Awful. Do NOT waste your time, TRUST ME.

While i was watching the movie i thought that everything could bebetter but everything was funny. I didn't know what to say after movie. This movie is real experience of fun . Actually movie is made forpeople who love real comedy . Main characters are telling us thatpeople are sometimes babies and that they wanna be head in this world .Whole plot enters in people and you can imagine what will happen next .Director is showing how characters are very imaginative in their jobs .I can't see man who didn't enjoy in movie . I am fond of good comediesand when i compare it with other comedies i can see big difference .Movie can also illuminate you because it works like some propagandafrom Middle East which is shown by masters of humor . Movie still needssomething to make an impression but it has the future

This one did nothing for me. Well, that's not true, it did temporarily break insomnia's hold on me. A solid cast but a weak story. Should be Zero stars.

George Clooney, Ewen McGregor, Jeff Bridges, Kevin Spacey... What red-blooded American woman wouldn't enjoy staring at them for a few hours? Not to mention Robert Patrick, Stephen Root and Stephen Lang... What a cast! But as much as I loved the acting ability of the well-cast actors and admired the originality of the writer, I only liked the movie. Sure, I laughed most of the way through and was mystified about what would happen next. Of course I did, but despite that the movie didn't stay with me when it was over. I blithely went on to another one.I do recommend this enjoyable, intelligent comedy/satire The Men Who Stare At Goats highly because I had fun watching it.Reviewed by Betty Dravis, August 21, 2011Author of "The Toonies Invade Silicon Valley" and other books

This review is from: The Men Who Stare At Goats (DVD) The Men Who Stare At Goats was a pretty funny movie. Even though there was some seriousness in this movie,it still had a lot funny scenes in it as well. Being based on a true story, made it even more funny, when it was funny, because you wouldn't expect someone to do the dumb things that they do in the movie. I enjoyed the movie and I know you will too. So give it a try and buy it.

A film like this is hard to figure out. It is undoubtedly clever andfunny, but near the opening of the film, a line appears on the screenreading, "More of this is true than you would believe." It really makesthe viewer question how much of what one is watching is the truththroughout the film. While doing research on the film, I found out asurprising amount of the facts presented in the film are true. Yes,there are psychic spies, and yes, there is a so called "Hippie Army"division of the military. The plot of the story, however, is false. Iwas not disappointed when I found this out. The film works much betteras a dramatization than a retelling of these odd events. Everyone inthe film is obviously having a great time in their roles. Clooney, inparticular, carries the film with his portrayal of Lyn. He always has afocused gaze on whatever he does, and a brilliant speaking tone, makingthe most outrageous points somewhat believable. Bridges gives a notableperformance as well, almost reprising his role as the iconic character"The Dude" from the 1998 film "The Big Lebowski." The only exception isthat he has somehow been stuck into the head of a military movement, passing out flowers and telling his troops to "let the dance out." Thefilm's cast is superb. They all understand the tone of the film andknow how to deliver the material in the most effective way.

Like they say, the truth is stranger than fiction. There's a reasonthis movie is not invented wholly out of someone's imagination but isbased on the Whole Earth movement of the military in the '70s and early'80s. After the failure of the US military in Vietnam, it's notsurprising that the Pentagon would put everything on the table and lookfor alternative methods to improve its fighting abilities. Yes, usingmind control and "remote viewing" and psychic abilities might seemunlikely, but given the zeitgeist and the general disillusion with howthings were at that time, it's not completely implausible. The Internetdid originate from the Pentagon so if you can poke your friends onFacebook, you can thank the military. Anyway, I found thebackstory-told in flashback by milquetoast midwestern reporter BobWilton (Ewan MacGregor) more interesting than what was being done inthe present with the information. The different non-traditional methodsof warfare had been conceived by Bill Django (Jeff Bridges) who had arevelation when he realized how much his men instinctively did not wantto kill a fellow human being. His research was funded by the Pentagonand he traversed various counter-cultural groups during six yearsduring the '70s, acquiring information which the Pentagon thought mightbe useful in fighting in a less traditional way.Cut to the present and reporter Wilton arrives in Iraq and meets LynCassady (George Clooney) who Wilton had heard of during the course ofreporting a story. They set to complete Cassady's work as a contractorand after freeing themselves from some dicey situations in which theyare able to use some non-traditional methods of fighting, they finallyencounter Django, working for one of Cassady's rivals, Larry Hooper(Kevin Spacey). Working for Hooper, Django has been co-opted in orderto use his non-traditional methods to actually kill the enemy. The plot at this point is quite weak. I found the last 35 minutes or soquite meandering and very unfocused. It seems director Grant Heslov(who also wrote the excellent "Good Night and Good Luck") wasn't surewhether he wanted a goofball comedic work or a road trip movie, or afilm with tougher social commentary and ultimately he got none. Themovie seems to peter out, to me. There definitely is a good film here, but this is not really it. George Clooney gives a dynamite performance, deadpanning such goofy responses that one can't help but grin.MacGregor's character is a bit bland to begin with but he certainlydoes not enliven him. One can't really blame his wife for leaving him.Kevin Spacey performs very well. Jeff Bridges has charisma to burn andhis work here reminds me of the spacey Lebowski in the cult "BigLebowski" film. He is an extremely talented actor and conveys well thenot-frequently-portrayed character of a counter-culture soldier. This is an enjoyable film-the script is quite good, the acting issolid, and the very fact that something similar to the events thathappened in this movie occurred is amazing. However, the filmultimately tries to be too many things at once and fails.

It takes under a minute until you know what kind of movie this is goingto be, some sort of slapstick comedy. It's not a bad thing, not at alland it started quite funny. An impressive number of stars in this film.George Clooney is the one that really stands out, and Ewan McGregor isalso good. Of course they are the leads so they are the ones you seemost but I feel the rest of the well known actors are just alright andnothing special. Their seriousness combined with the movies silly toneworks well. But about half ways in I get the feeling it's starting todrag. Some funny bits appear now and then but the plot is just blank.Sure there is a story but it's neither interesting or even reallyfunny. One gets the feeling it's just there to connect a bunch of jokestogether. The movie has minimal action so if anyone thinks it's a warfilm then it's not, the war parts are nothing more than a set piece.Soon one realises that jokes can't carry the movie as a whole. Like Iwrote earlier about half ways my concentration begins to dip, I stopcaring where the plot is heading. When it ends I shrug my shoulders andnothing more. Not a bad 90 min but neither that good either. Sureslapstick comedies seldom, maybe never have any really substance butthis film had absolutely nothing underneath. Because there is no realcharacter development I don't care much for the ending. Not that thereis something particularly wrong at the end but it just feels likenothing. That several things make no sense I've long stopped thinkingabout, but I suppose one can't expect that from a comedy. My reaction leans to the negative. A bit disappointed sadly. I figure Iwas expecting something more from this. It's not a very bad movie butit's not good either. If you see it you sure will feel it's an somewhatenjoyable 90 min. But my verdict is no more than 5/10.

The basic premise for the movie appears wacky at first glance, butseems to be based on stuff that actually happened, at least in Russia. The casting is spot on. The individuals are very believable and one canhonestly say that they are very reminiscent of characters in real life. The idea of someone looking into mind control as a possible method ofwarfare is hilarious, and the way this story is carried out ishilarious. It reminded me in places of a Cohen Brothers movie, crossed with Catch22, and some Team America thrown in for good measure. The direction is excellent, as is the screen writing, and as Imentioned - the casting is great. It's typical that this was under theradar for awards, to my mind, it should have won some awards and theactors should definitely have won something significant.George Clooney is a fave anyway, but his role in this film was justgreat, as was Ewen McGregor and of course, The Dude, Jeff Bridges.I loved the little digs made toward the various U.S. activities in themiddle east, and politics. If you want good entertainment and you have a twisted sense of humour -you will love it. If you are looking for "same old, same old" Hollywoodaction flick - not so much.

This movie was quite a find, although not an exceptional movie, it's avery good one, with several entertaining moments. The movie begins with Bob, a reporter, telling how his story reallybegan, after some events in his life make him lose his wife and nearlygo to a depression state, he decides to go to Iraq and find meaning inhis profession and life, there he finds Lyn Cassady, a name he heardfrom a guy he interviewed months before, that he said had specialpowers. The story revolves around if Lyn and others like him, really havespecial powers, as both men travel in Iraq, Lyn start telling how hegot into the "Jedi Project", as they called, the story itself may havesome flaws, but it's quite good, specially how it's handled, you spenda good amount of time wondering if they really have special powers andat some times, wishing it.The movie also has some star power with some seriously goodperformances, from George Clooney, Jeff Bridges, Ewan McGregor andKevin Spacey, even tho the last two are overshadowed by their oldercolleagues, all shine in their parts. It's a very good movie, with a solid story and even better acting.Rate: 7.5/10

Criticisms of the film adaptation of Jon Ronson's book "The Men who stare at Goats" are that it doesn't quite work as a narrative and fits no neat "genre" category. Is it serious drama exploring the US military's investigation of the paranormal for operational use? Is it satire, comedy, buddy-movie or what? A resemblance to early Coen Bros movies can be seen in the quirky characters, committed acting with delicious black comedy moments, sudden violence, and unpredictable plot twists. The viewer is left however with the feeling of a whole less than the sum of its parts, the result less-than-satisfying drama. But the film is nevertheless enjoyable and instructive, and worth seeing for several reasons. It deserves a place on the shelf alongside "Dr. Strangelove," "Catch 22" and "Oh What a Lovely War" as a satire on the military mindset, but "The Men Who Stare at Goats" is unique. The raw material was supplied by British journalists Jon Ronson and John Sergeant's tongue-in-cheek investigation of the US military's secret projects exploring mind control, telekinesis, telepathy, remote viewing and methods of unconventional combat carried out in special units from the 1970s to the 1990s with varying degrees of success. The film's fictional plot is set in the early part of the 2003 Iraq war (though that war is not the film's subject, and it's not an overtly political tract). The story of the "New Earth Army" and their extraordinary activities is told in flashback through the experience of the Ewan McGregor character, a naive young journalist looking to prove himself after his wife leaves him by finding and writing up a big story in the danger zone. In the rooftop bar of a Kuwait hotel he meets Lyn Cassady (George Clooney), ex-NEA warrior now middle-aged but still steeped in the belief system generated during his years spent in the "special unit" at Fort Brag.McGregor, Clooney, Bridges and Spacey each bring commitment and comedy to their roles, with Clooney and Bridges particularly good. Clooney is convincing as the clearly unhinged and delusional Cassady, just sane enough to be right some of the time with some genuine hit-and-miss psychic abilities and hilariously funny. Think Ulysses Everett McGill from the Coens' "O Brother Where Art Thou?" told by the military that he has exceptional paranormal powers and is greater than the average human in capabilities. For the character played by Bridges we have "The Dude" from "The Big Lebowski", transposed wholesale into a position power in the US Army, complete with long plaited hair and fully-formed new-age philosophy so confidently expressed that he steps effortlessly into the role of Warrior-Monk-Leader-of-Men. Bridges' scenes are almost all in flashback as the inspiration and mentor of the original New Earth Army team at Fort Brag back in the day until the final part of the film when he pops up again in the current narrative older, diminished in confidence and stature, now working for scheming and malevolent former student Spacey's successful private company in Iraq. The story follows Clooney's and McGregor's characters from one gun-wielding (sometimes gun-firing) encounter to the next through a Road-to-Baghdad buddy-movie format with the history of the NEA episodically filled-in in by Clooney's revealing narrative to McGregor. The comedy lurches from brilliance to slapstick and back again, with real laugh-out-loud moments. The denouement, where NEA philosophy finally defeats current military-political paradigms is visually spectacular and in its own way logical but less than completely convincing.Much of the film's detail about the paranormal goings-on at Fort Brag over the years is reported to be pretty accurate. The zealous belief of the Bridges and Clooney characters (and others) in the fundamental value of what they are doing and their inherent superiority to those living a more mundane existence is very funny and well realised. All these actors do comedy well. Although a film with a more coherent narrative line and better editing might have been made, "The Men Who Stare at Goats" is worth seeing for the joy of the ensemble cast hamming it up, some genuinely hilarious scenes and the mind-blowing realization that the US military, with its enormous taxpayer-funded budgets, takes all this paranormal strangeness quite seriously and has devoted considerable resources into the development of effective "psychic warriors". The US Army really has trained men in "remote viewing" and to try to kill goats with mind-power, and may even as you read this be engaged in developing methods of alternative psychic warfare in ways you can't even imagine.

One of the greatest and funniest movies I've seen in a very long time. I unfortunately spent my last couple of theater experiences seeing horrible movies like Transformers. Well, District 9 was pretty good but Goats is a Masterpeice in my opinion. It covers concepts such as:Guidance of the UniverseESPSome of the minor atrocities of our government.Oh, and it's based on a true story. To appreciate this movie involves getting out of your boxes and opening up your minds. Most of these people can't do that. Even Physics professors admit to believing in parallel universes even in this space we share. There's more to life than what you see.

"Mr. Bean's Holiday" has always been THE worst movie that my husbandand I have ever seen; the one we laugh at and make jokes about becauseit's so bad. It is the standard bearer for terrible movies. Not anylonger! "Men Who Stare At Goats" is NOW the worst movie we've everseen. You say to yourself, "My goodness, George Clooney, Jeff Bridges,Ewan McGregor and Kevin Spacey are in this movie.....It must be a goodone!....They wouldn't pick a crummy script...especially Kevin Spacey".HA! Fooled us! Terrible attempts at humor and boring dialog; Wecouldn't wait for the movie to end. We almost walked out and wish nowthat we had. To the screenplay writer and producer....what were youthinking? To the lead actors....how could you? To those of you thinkingabout going to this movie....don't waste your time and money....Ipromise...it is terrible. I want my money and two hours back! MWSAGjoins the ranks of Ishtar,Showgirls, Glitter(Mariah Carey's bomb),Swept Away(remember this Madonna fiasco?), Mr.Bean's Holiday, Gigli(BenAffleck and Jennifer Lopez's train wreck), You Don't Mess With TheZohan, Howard The Duck and Basic Instinct 2.........

Evcept for a few; and I mean few laughs;this movie starts slow and goes nowhere fast. A true waste of a first rate group of actors. I kept waiting for this movie to get going , get more entertaining, less boring and it never happens. One of the worst movies I have seen in a long, long time!
peter-night 23 April 2012
I guess I must have had high expectations coming into this film becausealthough I enjoyed it I was left with a sense of "it could've been muchbetter." The soundtrack was amazing and some of the acting left mesmiling (but not laughing!). There were some great moments and someclassic situations but I think the problem is that it's a one jokemovie and sustaining the comedy for nearly two hours was too much. All the usual suspects put in frenzied performances, but again I feltthey were trying to hard. Don't bother to go to the theater. Wait forit on DVD. You'll enjoy it much more (rather than keep thinking aboutthe 11 bucks you just spent!).
almos666 23 April 2012
Supposedly based on true events, the movie has the protagonist - an outof luck journalist - become acquainted with a legend of the top-secretmilitary psychic research program - an event which gives him anillusion of purpose in life.Lyn Wescott - brilliantly played by Clooney - believes himself to bethe last of the real-world Jedi - the only remaining ex-member of whatused to be the New Earth Army, a secret unit formed by a neo-hippiewith dreams of changing the world. Much had been said about the ironyof the film and of the facts it was supposedly based on, but in myopinion that's not what the movie is about. Running deep in thestoryline, told through Lynn's flashbacks to his time in the New EarthArmy, is the theme of confrontation between dreams and reality. Lynn'smentor is a dreamer, a man who's deeply driven by his noble purpose -so deeply, in fact, that he can't even spot troubles germinating in hisown ranks. And so is Lynn, his apt pupil. In their eyes, The New EarthArmy is a major force for good, the representation of the archetypalGood in the world. The story of the NEA and its downfall, as recalledby Lynn, is the archetypal tale of the rise of a noble order and itsbetrayal by one of its own. Long after New Earth Army had beendisbanded, Lynn is still trapped in the dream - so when he has a visionof his mentor calling him to the Iraqi desert, he doesn't hesitate tofollow it.The journalist, newly befriended by Lynn, becomes infected by theirdream, as it gives him a sense of purpose and elevates him from being adivorced loser to becoming a warrior of Good. But, as Lynn and thetraitorous Larry meet in Iraq, the latter reminds him that "none ofthis was real"."The men who stare at goats" are, deep down, the men in search forpurpose. Their attempts to give their life a meaning are guided by theimages and references from the popular culture, and they are themselvesin turn unaware that their quest is, in fact, the quest for a modernmyth in a world that lost touch with its roots.
