Sid didn't kill Nancy!!!

This review is from: Sid & Nancy (DVD) I must admit when I was young and naive, I too liked the movie, Sid and Nancy. But, I have grown into an adult. And now on every story I got to know the truth!! Sure this movie is good. Only because it's what most people have taken for the truth. And it's a punk rock romeo and juliet movie. Alex Cox isn't by far My favorite person. And I really don't feel He did much investigating at all, On the truth. So at best this is a good fictional story. I don't believe Sid killed Nancy. Actually if You were to ask Me, I would have to agree "Nancy killed Nancy"! There is too many things that point to John's innocence!! All in all it's a good fictional story, As I mentioned. If You are interested in the truth, Try the movie "Who killed Nancy"!! This review was written in favor towards John Lydon.

Great leading performances but a missed opportunity

I think i should start off by saying that i am big Sex Pistols fan, Buti'm an even bigger fan of Johnny Rotten, Which proved a disappointmentas the film didn't give the audience an insight or enough time to eiderRotten (Lydon), Cook or Jones. But despite that Sid and Nancy is anentertaining biopic with great leading performances by both a young(and hard to recognise) Gary Oldman and Chloe Webb. But what this filmcaptures the most is a great viewing of 1970's England and delivers afantastic view of 1970's LondonSo overall Sid and Nancy has a great costume, make-up and interiordesign which gives the viewers a spectacular insight in the era ofpunk. So with the great insight and two very well done performances, but it could have been better so i hope it won't be the last film aboutthe sex pistols and that the next film will be more focused on the banditself. But Sid and Nancy is still a pleasure to watch

Good, but not enough to buy.

What is good: great acting, Gary Oldman plays a convincing Sid Vicous. There is a couple laughs. Like when Nancy mispronounces Wanking, as wonking. It has a more nice fairytale ending. I also like the version of My Way by Sid Vicous ( originally done by Frank Sinatra) What is bad: There was a strong British accent. There are unfortunately, no english subtitles. So there might be alot of what did he say moments.

"Sid's Not A Musician, He's A Fabulous Disaster"

Almost impossible to believe this movie was directed by the same man who gave us the gently odd and charming, Repo Man. Sid and Nancy attacks its audience with all the subtlety of a punk band, which is to say, none. Punk was a mercifully short chapter in rock music history, only rap is worse. However, we all owe punk a debt of gratitude because it drove a spike through the coked-up heart of Disco, a vile plague visited upon our fair land. The Sex Pistols and especially Sid Vicious were the very embodiment of Punk. As with many other entertainers, it was Sid's life, not art, that did the talking. Sid, and girlfriend Nancy, achieved their goal of "going out in a blaze of glory", if overdosing and murder in a skid-row hotel are your idea of glory. It's a dark story, but in a thoroughly sad and twisted way, also a love story. The payoff of this picture is Gary Oldman who gives a performance so brilliant he could have quit acting at the wrap party and still be remembered. He doesn't "give an impression" of Sid Vicious, or "impersonate" him, Oldman inhabits his soul. One can only imagine what a strain it must have been to lose the weight, dress like Sid, and see the world through his eyes. Remember way back to Raging Bull, when DeNiro was a real actor and not yet into making Meet The Morons movies and ham-fisted American Express commercials? It's reminiscent of that. Chloe Webb holds her own as Nancy, and the scene at her parents' house (a few miles from here) is an absolutely stunning portrayal of worlds colliding. Some movies, and some lives, don't have happy endings. If you can manage that, this movie is worth adding to your collection. It's a chilling, very real masterpiece. Sure enough, another offering from Criterion, these folks are all about quality.

A car crash, you hate to see it but you can't stop looking

It's grossly inaccurate. they seriously need to follow the facts.Sid was needy and innocent as a disturbed child. Nancy was a leach whoscrewed anyone for a fix. She caused Sid to go down his down wardspiral. At first she tried to get Johnny Rotten but he declined, thenshe tried the very gullible Sid. If she hadn't introduced Sid into theheavy drugs, they'd still be alive. The band may have gotten backtogether. but of course we'll never know. In the movie there are so many mistakes and even visual problems.Johnny Rotten was intelligent and not a sissy as they made him out tobe in the movie. he really did care for Sid.Sid was just so easy. you make him to what ever you want if you knewhow to handle him. He didn't want to be a heroin user, but he couldn'tstop. he knew something bad would happen yet he couldn't stop.Nancy was a groupie. she refused to work. she pushed Sid to his limits. In the movie she is portrayed as a caring annoying as hell girlfriend.they got one thing right, she was annoying. She didn't care for Sid shewanted to be in the spotlight. She was well known for sleeping withvarious bands. They didn't ask any of the original band members if they wanted to helpor tell the real story. They didn't even use the original music.I do NOT recommend seeing this movie to anyone.

Love it

Chloe Webb did an amazing job as Nancy Spungen, she caught every bit of her personality.Gary Oldman was completely flawless as Sid Vicious in this movie.Even though this film is not 100% accurate we'd still like to believe Sid and Nancy are still together.Even though John Lydon did not approve of this movie, we got to see how he truly felt about Nancy and Sid's relationship. This film was not showing that heroin is "cool" but how Sid lost control of his life and his friends in the end in spite of everyone trying to help him.

a portrait of the two quite possibly most annoying people on the planet

I know everyone likes watching movies where young, hip, famous peopledie in gritty ways, and I'd be lying if I said that my own morbidcuriosity didn't occasionally take me in the direction of movies likeSid & Nancy. Did people of the punk persuasion in the late 70s reallyall have speech impediments? because that's what this movie led me tobelieve. Gary Oldman played the part of Sid Vicious sounding drunk, toothless and mentally challenged--in other words, probably fairlyaccurate. Chloe Webb's constant hoarse shriek was capable of suckingall the sympathy out of her character that when she was stabbed, Icouldn't help but think, "well, at least she won't yell anymore." Theworst part of the movie was Sid's performance of "My Way." I supposethat's a subjective comment--I never could get into the Sex Pistols atall, let alone solo Sid. At least I was able to press fast forward. While it was still your typical biopic, it was refreshing in the factthat neither Sid nor Nancy were glorified in any way. They wereportrayed as spoiled, hedonistic, and none too bright. There was noinkling of the misunderstood genius character that plagues these sortsof movies. I felt sorry for them, I'll admit, even Nancy and hershriek, because of the way the characters were essentially responsiblefor their own destruction, and too dumb and strung out to see itcoming.

Nancy Spungen is a Legendary Goddess

Sid and Nancy is the best punk rock real life based film ever made, and the most interesting story ever told. It was based on fact, and after reading And I Don't Wanna Live This Life, by Deborah Spungen, and 12 Days on the Road:Sex Pistols, you can easily see the realism that the movie was formatted on. Nancy Spungen was a creative. beautiful punk rock godess, even though she was loud, and *unfortunately* a heroin user. Webb portrays her fairly, the real life Nancy was much sexier and charming. Sid was her life, they were romantic, and as every couple, had their ups and downs. The movie shows this, as well as several classic Sex Pistol songs, as well as Sid's solo efforts, managed by his loving girlfriend Nancy. I highly reacommend this film. Plus, Courtney Love, is also in it briefly, which is a plus as far as I'm concerned. It is a film loaded with talent.

Best Movie Ever

Though this movie isnt very true to what happened in real life,It has great acting, it verry depressing and there is a lot of cussing but its one of the greatest movies ever made. Gary Oldman is such a great actor and can play any part.

stuhh2001 22 April 2012

a classic for all time

This is NOT a rock and roll movie! This is a psychiatric report ofthe pre Prozac era of two ill people. Nancy's mother said that she was troubled from birth. It was probably someform of brain damage. But that diagnosis was not available, or considered atthat time. Every day was spent trying to appease Nancy's desires to thedetriment of her siblings lives. Is it any wonder that heroin gave herprobably the fist peaceful moments she ever knew? To me, these are AcademyAward performances. This is pre Hollywood Gary Oldman, before he decided toleave acting and become a very rich Hollywood star, in movies of stomachturning violence. Was has become of Chloe Webb? Doesnot an actress of this talent deserve to be seen more? Also, Andrew Schofield as Johnny Rotten, matches the insanity of the two protagonists of the title. I think it's aninspired movie, worth many viewings. As an aside, Sandy Baron, the hotel clerk was asurprise appearance to me. In the seventy's and eighties he was a regular onTV as a standup comic and did very well. The part of Lenny Bruce onBroadway, which he expected to get, went to another actor, and he justdissappeared. It's good to see him back. One last kudo. The Black actor who gave Sid and Nancy their methadoneat the clinic, knocked me out. Kept talking about, "Nam". A very impessiveshowing in the ninety seconds given him.

Excellent Drama

One of the best Drama's ever.A great performance by Gary Oldman. There are interesting scenes thatdepict the times, but do not take this as fact. The DVD version has excellent footage from DOA, and a great commentary byJulien Temple saying how much the film is unrealistic. Really worth seeingif you have an interest in Sid Vicious, but do not take it as fact.

How Can You Make Stupidity Funny??

OK....first of all, I may be the oldest punk rocker out there. While myyounger sister was groovin out to the Stones, Hermins Hermits, The DaveClark Five, and all those other bands in the 1960's that would mergeinto the psychedelic hippie thing I was into Mozart, Beethoven, andRalph Vaughn Williams. She stayed there, I didn't.I discovered ROCK....got involved with a band....and grew from there. Idiscovered punk while on a distant Pacific island and then on a trip toEngland....Sid was dead by then. The culture lived on...at least for afew years. This movie, however inaccurate, has got the spirit and Gary Oldman isperfect as Sid. The look and attitude is positively scary. It's almostlike a drug induced dream, floating thru the white ghettos of mid1970's London. Why is it that the Pistols destructed and the Clash wenton?? Something to do with drugs, specifically heroin. In my day thebiggie was cocaine. I got out of it by joining Peace Corps and going7000mi away. Oh so many are now pushing up flowers.Stupidity as funny? Yeah, Just look at Sid.

Wow

This movie is a must see. Gary Oldmen plays the real Sid Vicious. Everyoneelse looks the same to some degree. Sid and Nancy go through a rollercoaster ride of ups and downs till one day they ended up in tragedy. Igivethis movie the highest rating out there!

First class directing+first class acting=First class Movie

Alex Cox has created a visionary cinematic masterpiece of Pop Culture. This film is filled with anger, passion and honesty. I feel as close to the characters as I would to a deviant sibiling thanks to the realism and epic direction. Symbolism and foreshadowing create the canvas that Cox has used to tell a story of love beyond all bounds. Gary Oldman, Probablly one of the finest and under-rated actors trying to break into the Hollywood Machine, takes a very true to life approach to the character. Oldman melds his acting skills with real life pain to recreate the Character. Gary olman is Sid Vicious. Don't let the Punk Rock fairy tale of The Sex Pistols elude the underlying allegory of the purest love story since Romeo and Juliet. The Punk Rock band "The Circle Jerks" once Screamed "Love Kills", and this time it did. One of the ironic twists is that Courney Love, wife of troubled Punker Kurt Cobain, has a small part in this film. Love and Cobain have been compared to Sid and Nancy on many occaissions. I would highly recomend this film to anyone from Cinematic Connoisseurs seeking fine direction and acting to Gen Xers who want a violent love story with all the Punk Rock trimmings.

Oldman Rules and Cox Makes A Great Film

The acting in this movie is stellar. Gary Oldman was so good during thisperiod of his career that it pains me to see how he let it slip and gotcomfortable just mailing it in. From the very second I saw him on screenasSid Vicious, I was like "Oh my god, he's not dead." I can't think of abigger achievement for an actor then to so totally inhabit the characterthat they become one in the same. The actress playing Nancy was equallyasgood, but given how annoying Nancy was, it's hard to embrace her as muchasSid. And as for Alex Cox, what the hell happened to you? You make anincredibly authentic, on the nose film and then you seem to slip off theradar. I don't know, I just don't quite get that one.A wonderfully study of the real punk period in England, and I can saythatfrom first hand experience. And a cool, totally watchable film to boot.Ifyou look close enough, you'll see a young Courtney Love in a couple ofscenes of the movie. A kind of eerie thing to watch nowadays given therelationship and then demise of Kurt Cobain. As satisfying this time asthefirst time I saw it. Beautifully executed and well done byall.

FOR THOSE WHO LOVE A HUMAN TRAIN WREAK

If you love watching a human train wreak, then this is your movie. The scenes are at times intense. Oldman plays an excellent junkie. The movie makes me wonder about us as a society that would produce individuals such as Sid and Nancy. The home scene with Nancy's parents was sad as the unhappy couple couldn't even fake acting civil. I was confused about the production of "My Way" in the middle of the movie. Was this a short feature they actually did, or was this supposed to be the workings of Sid' mind?

Brilliant, sad, and disturbing...

God, What a movie. The story of Sid and nancy was not only pitiful, but strangely romantic. This was not easy to watch- it was disturbing and really sad, but undeniably brilliant. I would recommend it.

mickeyboy86 08 April 2012

Informative rather than entertaining..

This is certainly a powerful piece of filmwork, most notably for theincredible and unforgettable leading performances of it's stars, OldmanandWebb. The film will, I think, be more interesting to Punk fans, or fans ofthe "Sex Pistols" (which I am both)- however I'm sure others could findsomething positive from it nonetheless. The seedy lives of the Sex Pistols in London before they were famous is agood laugh and although portrayed as delinquents, there are some greatmoments between Sid Vicious and his best friend and lead singer of thebandJohnny Lydon (aka- Johnny Rotten), who is replaced in friendship byairhead,New York druggie chick, Nancy Spungen.Although Sid is a bit of a joker, and doesn't seem to be too interested inanything, it is Nancy who turns him from a brash, uninterested young mantoa alcoholic and heroine addict.Though trying to force the drugs away, consious they are doing him harm, sheis seductive and persuasive enough to keep him hooked. In one scene, they are asleep in the early hours of the morning and thenextday, Sid is going to the airoport to meet his band and their promoter andthey are touring.Nancy keeps interrupting Sid and talking to him while he's trying to sleepand so he eventually gets out of bed and takes all his bags and leaves forthe airport (it's around 2-4am) and he says "I'll be bloody early for achange!!" , to get away. She shouts after him.. "Sid! No! we havn't had our fairwell drugsyet!"The film is powerful and informative, giving insight into the final partsofthe lives of these two individuals, arguing and fighting fairly frequentlyyet inseparable and bound tight by love. The film is not pleasent to watch, it's not entertaining, it's not evenenjoyable- but it is timeless and powerful.I'd give it 4/5- but we warned- it's not for the faint-hearted.
