This review is from: The Princess and The Frog (Three Disc Combo: Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) Great modern Disney movie. My 1& 2 yr old girls love it, especially the songs. Based around new orleans & jazz music. There are some darker themes in some parts dealing with the voodoo doctor & some mild violence but mostly harmless fun. I got the combo package so I could get the digital copy for my iPhone. Definetly worth purchasing.

I love all Disney films so I was surprised that I walked away from this movie with a bad taste in my mouth. I hated all the voodoo scenes and ended up fast forwarding through those parts. Despite that I could swear I saw the witch doctor make a deal with the devil (or as he called it with his "friends on the other side") in exchange for the townspeople's souls. Then at the end when he didn't succeed in capturing the prince am I wrong or did they take his soul in payment? I found that just utterly awful. At the end of the movie my four year old didn't want to walk down the hallway to bed by himself because "the monsters from the movie" might get him. And that was just from what he saw on fastforward. I agree with the one reviewer, this movie is way too dark.I have no idea what Disney was thinking. They should have candy coated the bad guy way more. We won't ever be watching this movie again.

This review is from: The Princess and The Frog (Three Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) (Blu-ray) We love this one! Tiana is the best princess ever. And Ray, the lightening bug stole the show. It is a must see.

I took my one year old son to see this and we ended up walking out. There was voodoo magic and tarot cards which are NOT only against our beliefs, but I believe not something to be showing children (and encouraging) either. Voodoo is a real religion that curses people, and causes much misfortune. It is ironic that the cure for their being led astray by voodoo is to try and seek another voodoo witch... Very, very disappointing. I had a lot higher hopes, as others said, for Disney's first black princess. How about we give the AA community a black woman to look up to, not one that is making critical mistakes!

It was a huge hit! The music was awesome and the visuals made it amazing. However, some parts of the movie were creepy (The Shadow Man) and should not be seen by kids under 5.
The Lawnmower 11 May 2012
This is a perfect film to take the family too during this holidays. Its refreshing to have a film that is entertaining to the whole family and never see any violence or bad words. It's like a classic Disney animated film. The Lawnmower highly recommends this film!

The following review was published on Rancho Santa Fe Review, Carmel Valley News, We Chinese in America, and (...). I also reviewed it on Fox 5 San Diego, wsRadio "Perry Previews the Movies."--------------------What if the girl that the Frog Prince kissed in the fairytale was not a princess, would the magic still work? You will find the answer in the magical new Disney animated musical, "The Princess and the Frog," directed by the same directors who brought us Aladdin and The Little Mermaid. The story is about Tiana, an African American little girl who wished upon an evening star in hope to get a restaurant of her own called "Tiana's Place." She suddenly saw a frog staring at her! She screamed and ran away. When she grew up, she had finally saved enough money to buy a place for a restaurant. It was a rather disheveled and shabby looking house. Tiana's loving, nurturing mother Eudora helped her tidy things up. Tiana had vivid plans for the future, but they were erased by another man who offered a much higher price. The land owners reneged on their promise.Tiana then again wished upon the evening star. She was shocked to see the frog again, sitting on the balcony! "Ha ha, very funny," she said, "I suppose you want a kiss?" "That would be nice!" said the frog. And that is where she flipped out.It turned out that the visiting prince of Meladonia was stuck in a frog form after the evil Dr. Facilier transformed him by voodoo magic. The frog prince promised to make Tiana's wish come true with just one kiss from her. Tiana unwillingly kissed the frog, but something queer happened to HER! When she looked in the mirror, she screamed in horror and jumped very high. She saw her hand turn into a green web foot and she was secreting mucus all over her body! She became a frog too! Tiana and Naveen must now use their wit to navigate through the dangerous bayou in search for a cure to their spell. One of the amazing achievements of this movie is in the large number of superb supporting characters, each with a rich and unique personality, including: Ray, a lovesick Cajun firefly who is in love with Evangeline, the evening star; Louis, a jazz-crazed alligator who wants to play with "the big boys;" Dr. Facilier, a charismatic evil voodoo fortune teller with friends from the other side; Mama Odie, a buoyant, playful, 200-year-old seer who lives in the bayou on a boat stuck in a tree; James, Tiana's inspirational loving father who believed that wishing upon a star can only do half of the job, the rest has to come from hard work. My favorite character is Tiana. She not only has big dreams, but also works hard to achieve them. She is very attractive and a great cook since she was a little girl. I loved how Tiana made a delicious, tantalizing swamp gumbo and taught the carefree, fun-loving Naveen how to mince mushrooms.I think Naveen looked better than Tiana when they were frogs. He had expressive eyebrows and gleaming white teeth. He is livelier as a frog too. I liked how he made musical instrument out of a tree branch and spider web.I love the storyline because it is fascinating and keeps you guessing what is going to happen next. I have many favorite scenes, one of them is when Ray the firefly died, he became a star, right next to Evangeline, the evening star! This is the first Disney movie that I know to have a character who is not a villain who died. The funniest scene was when Tiana said, "Just one kiss," then Naveen the frog prince said, "Unless you beg for more!" I thought these two scenes are genius touches. The visual style is stunning. I especially love the multi-colored bottles in Mama Odie's place. In the end, I liked when the golden light and the water surrounded Tiana and Naveen. When I was very little, there were many frogs in our backyard that I often caught after it rained. I named one of them, a tiny green tree frog "Chile," who is my favorite, and wrote stories about him. I never kissed any frog myself because I wouldn't want to turn into one!I watched the first 30 minute preview of this amazing film at the Disney D23 Fan Expo in Anaheim in September 2009 as the youngest credentialed media representative. I had a prediction that this could be a five starfish film if the rest is as good as the preview. I was right! I was thrilled to meet and interview directors John Musker and Ron Clements immediately following their panel discussion at D23. Both enjoyed my drawings of frogs and dragon, and autographed for me. I asked why they chose an African American girl as their heroine for this movie. John Musker said, "It has not been done before. We thought this would be something new. The story is set in New Orleans where there is a large African American community. We thought it would be fun to have a heroine that is different from the other ones."What a difference indeed! When I compared Tiana and many other Disney princesses from older movies, I noticed an immediate difference: The other princesses were mostly wishful and lazy, waiting for some prince to deliver them to salvation. Tiana, however, is self-reliant, who also reforms a lazy prince and teaches him why work is important. Why would a prince from other Disney movies want to marry a princess whom he doesn't really know, and who doesn't know how to do anything useful except flirting around and looking pretty? The Princess and the Frog is about love, sacrifice, dreams, and how to make your dreams come true. When you know what your dreams are, you must pursue them with hard work. The Princess and The Frog (Three Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo)

'The Princess and the Frog' delivers on all levels. It showcases the magic and art that is Disney hand-drawn animation. It gives us a sublime soundtrack, returns to the wonderful, musical format that all long-time fans of the studio know and love (we all grew up with it!). I cannot recommend this film highly enough! (Ray the firefly is fantastic!!)Why then only a 1 star rating for the Blu-Ray DVD 3 disc set, you ask? Simple: the amazing and vibrantly creative business that Walt Disney created and nurtured has become a money-grubbing, greedy empire. Children may watch Disney films but they certainly don't BUY the DVDs...ADULTS in their lives do. ADULTS shell out their hard-earned (in most cases) bucks for these DVDs and believe it or not there are adults who DON'T have kids that are fans of the films too (myself included).I enjoy the behind-the-scenes extras that Disney Studios includes on most of their DVD releases. They are the main reason I BUY the DVDs instead of just renting them. I have a perfectly good DVD player. I do not want or need a Blu-Ray disc player and I resent the fact that I would be forced to buy a (very expensive) 3 disc package that includes a useless (to me) Blu-Ray disc in order to get a plethora of behind the scenes special features. The regular DVD release of this film includes one brief and not so special making of featurette. Keep this set, I'll be renting 'PATF' instead.Bad form Disney....very bad form.

While the colors were great, and some of the songs were fantastic I had to stop the movie at about the 45 min mark. This movie took a seriously dark turn, and it is very disheartening that Disney chose to include voodoo in a movie. Young girls do not need this type of satanic media around them, and frankly I wish I would have read the reviews before buying. I will not be finishing this movie. Watch a classic disney movie over this one any day!
DICK STEEL 06 May 2012
The Princess and the Frog may have gotten off the wrong foot withcertain quarters who decide to see this through a tainted, racialprism, but what this film actually did, was to reaffirm that old schoolanimation still has its place amongst CG and 3D offerings, bolstered byan impressive storyline, which is always important if to entertainchildren and the kids who accompany them. And Disney surely knows what it needed to do given its years ofestablished experience to know what works, and what don't. Like most ofits classics, it takes on a well known tell, and gives it its ownDisney spin complete with a Happily Ever After. It's the same excellentspin applied on the frog prince who wants to be human again, and onlyso if kissed by a princess. The joke of course, is to have the princessturned into a frog, though no fault of her own because that's justwhat's needed to turn the classic on its head. We've had Disney-fiedversions of tales from the little mermaid under the sea, to the ChineseHua Mulan, and now, an ambitious African-American girl Tiana (voiced byAnika Noni Rose) determined to fulfill her father's dream of openingher own restaurant.Ron Clements who came up with this version of the story, deserves thatpat on the back for its really wacky humour that got put into thistale, and the design of one of the most determined heroines in Disney'sfold. Set in New Orleans, the first 20 minutes set the stage with itsneat introduction and the back stories of every key character allspelled out, before mixing them up altogether to present thatamphibious problem to solve, no thanks to a dash of black magic by DrFacilier (Keith David) to turn a visiting Prince Naveen (Bruno Campos)into a frog, although still keeping his glib tongue intact. And what is a Disney flick if it doesn't come with the requisitetalking animals, and plenty of song and dance numbers? You'll be hardpressed not to like the firefly Ray (Jim Cummings) who pines after hisEvangeline (a star by the way), or the Jazz crazy crocodile in Louis(Michael-Leon Wooley), whose only dream is to play with the humans, infront of a crowd, without scaring everyone away. But the one who stealsthe show each time she comes on, is that dumb blonde Charlotte(Jennifer Cody), the childhood friend of Tiana who grew up with thatsilver spoon in her mouth, where her demands no matter how ridiculous, will always get met. You cannot help but laugh at her naivety, and Isuspect she just might get her own direct-to-DVD film soon enough. The message of the story's quite clear too, for everyone to clearlydistinguish between a need and a want, which for the characters, andourselves in real life, sometimes struggle to identify. It's feel good, although I was quite surprised with certain darker elements in thecharacters' battle against the chief villain, which while violence isshown off screen, the effect it has on kids still reverberate quitestrongly. Then again, it wrapped itself up very neatly and clearly, oneof the better animated films out there this year, standing proud thatit's done in classical 2D, Disney style, through and through.

As animation, fantasy this was a good movie. As themes go, I must say that this movie smells. Typical racist attitude, that Disney has exibited forever. An up and coming young Black Princess, unable to find that ideal man to make her life complete, circumstances lead her to...A great deal has been written about the fact this is an interracial situation. As usual it is the White guy with the woman of color. As if it does not occur in the other direction. Oh yes that continues to be taboo in 21st century America. Like many of the early Westerns, the White guy gets the beautiful Indian Princess, the Asian beauty, or the beautiful Mexican dancer. We only want your women. Why an exploration of interracial dating with this film aimed at mainly young Black impressionable girls, and in this manner. Why not both ways to tell our young people there is nothing wrong with a Black man having a wife that is White, or even a White man with a Black wife. Or maybe that is the point. It is ok for the White man to marry outside the norm, but not the White woman? Or worse yet the Black man is persona non grata. This is a theme I have observed a great deal in Hollyweird, Hollywood, of late, since "The Body Guard."In a great many movies of late we will see one Black woman, and she just happens to be the love interest of a White guy, and hang out with only White guys. Not one Black male in the entire movie. Disney has even placed this theme in some of it's for children weekly animation series. Then there is Nickelodeion's "True Jackson," and ABC Family's "Lincoln Heights." All aimed at young people containing the same theme. Why?Please Hollywood, wake up realize that this thing called interracial dating, and marriage happens both ways, and being racist about the theme is a horrible way to show our young people how life happens to be. Sad that we cannot get past these sterotypes, built into our outlook so long ago, and this animated movie does nothing to empower society to look past color.Do I wish this movie had been all Black, maybe. Just why was not "Prince Charming," Black? Should Snow White have had people of color included, or Sleeping Beauty, of course. But when the first movie for Black children comes to being, why must it have this theme? I wonder how many behind the scenes people with a little power were Black? I do not know, but I dare say none. Thus the insensitivity of this presentation. So what if a bunch of...

I bought this movie the same day it came out. And the beginning was great. And then came the shadow man and all this voodoo. There was to much voodoo in this movie. I ended up giving to my 1 yr old niece. I know she don't know about voodoo she's just watching a cartoon. Still thats too much for me and her.

A little darker than most Disney movies(lighter than the blackcauldron). But It was highly entertaining and my fellow reviews havealready hit all the good points. I am very happy with the newest Disney Princess! She is a hardworkinggirl and the prince is inept. It's good to see a more take chargeprincess. The music was fun yet has some flavor to it. yes, she is thefirst black princess, but who cares? seriously! We've had an Asian,American Indian & Hindi. Don't make such a big deal about it. And as far as this having the word Princess in the title. This is amovie for both boys and girls. There is enough to entertain everyonewho watches it! Don't let that fool you. There were some highly well animated scenes that were mind blowing. theCemetery and Mama Oddie's place to name two. They definitely returnedto hand drawn animation and it was appreciated! There is nothing odderthan when you see the computer generated mechanism, vehicle or ship gointo a scene and these loose hand drawn flowing characters just zipthrough.. but the one spot that they used it was very well blended. Itwas great!

The princess and the frog is the latest movie from the Disney studios.this one retakes the tradition of the traditional animation and at thesame time follows the same formula of each Disney movie of the past.Lots of humor, lots of music and songs, talking animals, a girl tryingto become a better person, magic and a colorful world. The story is setin the city of New Orleans and tells the story of Tiana, a girl whosewish since she was a little girl is to have her own fancy restaurant, aprince is desperately seeking a wealthy girl to marry when suddenly hereceives a voodoo curse that turns him into a frog, the prince thinkingthat Tiana is a princess, asks her to kiss him to overturn theenchantment and turns herself into a frog as well. The animation isvery good just like all Disney movies, the music is also excellent, already a tradition in Disney movies and the cast of voices were quiteconvincing. As a conclusion, The Princess and the Frog is a classicfairy tale with a twist of modernity or actuality. It is veryentertaining and enjoyable.

This movie is brilliant. It's so good that it's actually difficult forme to find words for it. I'd begun to lose hope in Disney for awhile, but Princess and the Frog has renewed my faith in them. It's a trulybeautiful film with amazing music, and the animation is just...spectacular isn't a good enough word. The movements are so fluid, andthe sceneries and characters are so colorful and creative. I wasespecially enamored by Dr. Facillier and his "Friends on the OtherSide" scene. Keith David is a master at voice acting, and his deepsinging voice was so fitting and sinister. When I first saw Naveen'sdesign, I wasn't sure about it, but it translates beautifully onscreen, just like the rest of them. Every character was cast perfectly, and Randy Newman effortlessly wrote songs that are just as good asHoward Ashman's and Alan Menken's. It's a movie I'd definitely seeagain, trust me, and any Disney fan who loved The Little Mermaid,Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and/or the Lion King should definitelycatch it.Welcome back, Disney. We missed you.

I think everyone (children as well as adults) looks forward to abeautifully animated film. I am not familiar with Anika's work but Ithink this will bring her into the limelight and we will be seeing muchmore of her in the future. I have not seen Princess and the Frog as ofyet but I am looking forward to seeing this, what I consider to be "adown to earth animated movie". I think it fantastic for the filmindustry as well as the viewers that we are starting to finally seesome solid animation projects coming out. Up was a superb example, andthere is another one coming out next year called Stork that peaks myinterest as well. These are the films that stand the test of time andtruly become classics! Alex

I am not sure what movie these other people whom wrote comments saw, however the movie Princess and the Frog that my best friend and I justwent and took our daughters and my nephew to see was a hugedisappointment. 1. My issue with this movie is that Disney is calling Tiana a Princess, however she was not a Princess she was a poor young woman throughoutthe entire movie until the Prince married her at the very end. 2. the big hype about this movie was that Disney finally had an AfricanAmerican Princess however Tiana was only displayed as an AfricanAmerican that the beginning of the movie and again at the very end ofthe movie because she was a frog the entire time. 3. I understand the whole New Orleans background to this movie and fromthe previews I thought that it would be a reasonable amount of NewOrleans soul to it(the music and accents did well) however there were alot of the negative stereotypes from New Orleans that did not need tobe included in this movie nor introduced to children of this age group. 4. Another disturbing twist to this movie that bothered me was the factthat they killed off a character (Ray the firefly) which seemedunnecessary and too mature for preschool+ aged children. The upside tothe death of Ray was that he got to be with the star that he thoughtwas a girl and that was a very touching part of the movie.5. The biggest offense of this movie to me was the OVER THE TOP use ofvoodoo and demons and spirits. The demon (friends on the other side)was too strong and it was scary. As a Christian I felt that this wasvery offensive and uncalled for most importantly. I was so very excited about this movie (my daughter and I have beenwaiting since we saw the first preview back in July) and I must say Ifeel like Disney has let me down. I had purchased a Princess and the Frog doll for one of my daughtersChristmas gifts and I will be taking it back because I do not want thespiritual connection of demons and spirits in my household. I also donot want to reward Disney by purchasing all of the products as Inormally have done in the past with other Disney movies. Sorry forthose of you who enjoyed this film but I did not.I wish I could give a rating of ZERO!

Since Disney decided to not do 2D animation anymore I was heartbrokenas I grew up watching the likes of The Little Mermaid,The LionKing,Pocahuntas,Aladdin the list goes on. But when I heard in 2009 thatthere was a new Disney princess coming and its in 2D animation I wasover the moon. The film takes place in the 1920s in New Orleans where awaitress named Tiana(who is African American)dreams of opening up herown restaurant. Meanwhile a womanizing playboy prince named Naveencomes to town with his henchman Lawerance(who looks an awful lot likeNathanial from Enchanted) and he visits a voodoo doctor named DrFaciller who is the baddie in this film and he turns Naveen into a frogand Lawerance into Naveen who is so sick and tired of Naveen's life hewants to be him.Of course they use his blood so that he will look exactly like him. Thereal Naveen sees Tiana who is at the masquerade ball and he asks her toturn him back into a prince. Problem is she isn't a princess and whenshe kisses him she turns into a frog and as the two don't get alongthey soon find themselves well you guessed it falling in love with oneanother. So they go on an adventure where they meet a jazz lovingalligator, a firefly named Ray aka Raymond who loves a falling starnamed Evangeline and a hilarious blind woman named Mama Odie.Packed with great jazz music and a great cast the only thing that itlacks is the awful ending I'm sure so people agree with me for sayingit but it wasn't as exciting as Aladdin or The Little Mermaid. If you seen Swan Princess which is from New Line Cinema(with thefrog),Cats don't dance(for the jazzy music and of course Randy Newmanwho was the composer for this film) or Anastasia(well I think its kindasimilar cause the two don't get along at first) then this is for you.I'll give it a 7/10 as it lacks near the end of the film.

This review is from: The Princess and The Frog (Three Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) (Blu-ray) I have always been a big fan of Disney's animated films, but there was a time when they had seemed to be making less than magical films. 'The Princess and the Frog' is a vibrant and colorful joy ride through Nawl'ins with some very endearing characters(Raymond the Cajun firefly is one of the best comic relief characters I've seen in a long time). It's actually nice to see a hand drawn 2 -D cartoon again, especially when it's Disney doing it with a full passion. I can tell you honestly that the film looks beautiful and the Blu Ray makes it all that much better. I love CGI animated films, but there is a nice old fashioned quality that these hand drawn 2-D animated films have, that is lost in CGI films. The 3 discs Blu Ray is really nice with a great Blu Ray transfer, a equally nice standard DVD, plus a treasure trove of goodies on the bonus disc and of course the new standard digital copy(who really needs this?) In closing, if you're looking for some good old Disney fun, 'The Princess And The Frog' delivers the goods, it may not be their best of all time, but it's a welcome return to what made Disney the animation giants 70 plus years ago.
