Has Some Very Nice Moments

This Shirley Temple feature is worth seeing for a number of very nicemoments in the story of "The Little Princess". It might be a littlelonger than necessary, and the story development is sometimes uneven, which keeps it from achieving its full potential. It offers the youngTemple a variety of material to work with, and she has some very goodsequences. For the most part, it follows the familiar story, though oftenembellished, particularly towards the end. The story and Temple'scharacterization give it a rather different feel from, for example, thesilent version that starred Mary Pickford. Here, Temple projects muchof her own persona, with her best moments coming with Arthur Treacher, who plays the easygoing brother of the stern headmistress. Thecharacter of Becky is still significant, but Temple does not ever havethe rapport with her that Pickford and Zasu Pitts had in the earlierversion. As a result, it's a bit uneven overall, but for those who enjoy thiskind of story, it's still worthwhile. The public domain print makes itsomewhat difficult to evaluate the production end, although it clearlycontained plenty of detail and color. It's a decent if unexceptionalfeature whose high points are usually worth waiting for.

Disappointing to real fans!

If you've ever read the book A little princess and held it dear as Ihave for so long, you'll too be disgusted by this movie that used thelovely book as the newest money maker for Temple. The performances aren't bad, I'll grant that. But Miss Minchin doesn'tlook nearly so ugly as she ought. Neither is Miss Amelia fat, pudgy, and stupid. In fact, she's clever and not too shabby looking at all.Her boyfriend or whatever wasn't even in the book! But, worst of all,her father doesn't die. How, oh how can you make this movie and haveCrewe still live?? It takes away so much of the emotion!!! And Templehardly looks as skinny or grubby as Sara was. It's completely awful. And all of the stuff about the war...what war??? He died of junglefever and business problems with the diamond mines. Do they evenmention those? I can't remember!! If you ever loved the book A LittlePrincess avoid this like the plague!!

One of the best 'cry-ee' movies of all time.

Unlike the horrible U.S.-set remake, this delightful romp stays true toBurnett's vision in tenor if not directly interpreted from the novel. Sarais not a total angel -- playing pranks on her 'evil' seminary mates, etc.Moral tone is present but not overpowering -- good will prevail over evil, belief in one's inner strength, sharing with those even less fortunate thanyou and many other dictums of Victorian children's literature. The story'sclimatic scene, when Sara has failed until Queen Victoria herselfintervenes, will send you straight to the Kleenex box. Shirley Temple'sperformance belies J. K. Rowling's belief that an American can notsuccessfully play a hero/heroine in a British children's classic.

A sappy-happy film

This watery film bears little resemblance to the classic novel. If youare a fan of the books, don't watch this movie! The strident pacing andabsorbing characterization of the original novel is diluted into a"star vehicle" film for Shirley Temple. As a childhood Shirley Templefan who has seen many of her films, I have to say that this isdefinitely one of my least favorites. In this film, Sara is depicted asa perfect, pretty, charming girl who, despite her miserable situation, remains perky and hopeful. Gone is Sara's magical, mysterious naturewith her queer ideas and mystical fairy tales. Now she's an ordinarypretty girl; if the movie was made today, she would be played as aprep. Also, little Lottie is noticeably absent, and instead, there's apointless plot line about Sara's tutor. And where did the pointlesscameo with Queen Victoria come from? All in all, the movie turns out tobe another happy-pretty-perky children's flick. I recommend watchingAlfonso Cuaron's sumptuous film version which, while the ending isdifferent, still maintains the magical mystery of the original novel.

Cute and a good family film

Shirley at 12yrs old is a delight as the sad little girl left in a verysnotty all girls boarding school while her father is away at war in1899,later on he is reported killed and leaves shirley with noone and nomoney so she is forced to work as a servant to pay her way.. I do admitthat this is not one of Shirley's best, for example Shirley's crying scenesare a bit heavy handed and forced but overall she is still so cute you justcant help but love her. I also enjoyed the girl who played Becky ,she wasso cute too. Mary Nash could have been the wicked witch in the wizard of oz,she does good as the nasty head mistress. Look for a very young andhandsome Cesar Romero as the Indian servant of an English nobleman. Bestscene , Shirley giving a snotty schoolgirl her comeuppance. A timelessfamily classic to show your children again and again.

Not the best adaptation/may contain spoilers

I have nothing against Shirley Temple movies, but some of her moviesthat are based on books are awful and this was one of them.Shirley mayknow how to sing and dance, but there is a time and place for that and"A Little Princess" should not have been that place. Shirley is nothingspecial as Sara Crewe in fact she doesn't even look the way Sara shouldin the book she is described as having black hair and huge greeneyes.Shirley had blond curls and blue eyes.If that wasn't annoyingenough all of Sara's special quirks and little oddities are written outentirely .The best thing about Sara was her ability to imagine awayeven the worst situations. Several major characters were not evenwritten into the movie.Instead we're forced to watch the brat sing anddance .My question is this: What was the point of the singing anddancing? It was pointless and plot less.Queen Victoria's appearanceconfused me to no end after all she's not even in the books. If you want to see better versions watch the 1995 one ,though itfollowed the same ending (minus Queen Victoria and the hospital) as the1939 one and was moved from England to New York and Sara was given morefriends(even when she was poor) and Amelia left it's still a betterchoice than the 1939 one. However if you want the best adaptation the1986 one is faithful to the book

Oscar-worthy film

A Little Princess COULD be a little bit better. But its a great story. I think who ever wrote this book is an outstanding author!!!!!!! Even if you don't see the movie, try the book. If you are sorta young, try the Classic Starts! A Little Princess book.

I hate to be a grinch, but . . .

First off, let me say that I like Shirley Temple and, as a Shirley Templefilm, it was quite good. Unfortunately, when I first watched the movie Iwas expecting the story from the book and was very disappointed. Theyonlyused the bare bones of the story and then altered the rest to fit theShirley Temple movie formula. If I hadn't read the book first I wouldprobably like the movie alot better. If you are also a fan of the book, seethe BBC mini series instead. They follow the story very closely, theactingis beautiful and the scenes between Sara and Becky, the scullery maid arewonderful. The ending was also true to the book and, I thought, moreemotionally satisfying than this movie's version. Still, though, theShirley Temple movie is an excellent movie on it's own, but don't watch it-- like I did -- expecting to see the Frances Hodgson Burnett bookcome-to-life.

One More Triumph For Our Shirley

A small child, affectionately known as THE LITTLE PRINCESS,must endure great hardship after her father is killed in theBoerWar.Shirley Temple had her last great box-office triumph inthissplendid Technicolor adaptation of the Frances HodgsonBurnett childhood classic. No longer a tiny tot - she turnedeleven the year THE LITTLE PRINCESS was released - but stillalittle trooper, Shirley exhibits once again the tremendouscharm & talent which made her Hollywood's top box officedraw. With wrinkled brow & tremulous lip or bouncing curls&joyous smile, she adeptly displays just the right moodormannerism to keep the focus of the audience's attentionfirmlygrasped in her chubby fists. The supporting players' roster is abundantly well cast:stalwartIan Hunter appears as Shirley's soldier father - this veryfineactor wisely uses his acting skills to keep from beingcompletely upstaged by the mighty moppet; handsome RichardGreene & lovely Anita Louise play the riding master & teacherwho befriend Shirley - their roles aren't terribly significant, butthey fill them quite well.Mary Nash is once again cast as Shirley's tormentor, thistimeplaying the evil-spirited headmistress of an exclusivegirls'seminary. This accomplished actress did not appear in manyfilms, but she could generally be counted on to provide avividperformance - notice the relish with which she essays hersmallpart in the medieval fantasy sequence (`I know my rights,Iknow the law and what I say I saw, I saw!'). Long-legged,adenoidal Arthur Treacher plays her henpecked brother; he isadelight during his two romps with Shirley to the musichallditty ‘Knocked ‘Em In The Old Kent Road.'Cesar Romero quietly portrays an Indian servant in a small, butimportant, role; Miles Mander & E. E. Clive both appearashardhearted, crusty old gentlemen - only one is regeneratedbyfilm's end. Sweet Beryl Mercer makes the most of her fewmoments as a stately, kindhearted Queen Victoria - whileEilyMalyon is a true fright as the school's slatternly cook.MarciaMae Jones participates in one of the film's most memorablemoments, when, as a particularly vile teenager, she receivesaface full of fireplace ashes, courtesy of sweet Shirley.Special attention should be given to ten-year-old SouthAfricanSybil Jason, who plays the wistful waifish charmaid whoidolizes Shirley. In her American film debut, Warner'sLITTLEBIG SHOT (1935), she proved wonderfully winsome & winning, but the storm of attention surrounding Miss Temple (exactly19months older than Miss Jason) tends, at this remove, toswampthe boats of the other female child stars of the period. However, delightful Sybil deserves to be remembered &appreciated for her own accomplishments. The Stolen Kiss, a lavish fantasy dream sequence, providesawelcome few minutes change of pace for Temple, Nash, Louise,Greene, Treacher & Romero.

Buried Shirley Temple Treasure

This review is from: Shirley Temple: America's Sweetheart Collection, Volume Five (The Little Princess / Stand Up and Cheer / The Blue Bird) (DVD) Again, we have three movies packaged together, but this time it's two clear winners and an "OK, for the historical significance" corny one. This version of The Little Princess is my favorite, in spite of the fact that it does not stick all that closely to the book, since none of the movies have done so. But it is more authentic than the more recent (and very good) Warner Bros. version from the 1990s. Shirley is the poor little rich girl whose adoring widower father puts her in Miss Minchin's snooty school in London while he goes off to the Boer War. She has lived all her life in India, and is accustomed to a very different lifestyle. But she adapts well, even when word comes that her father lost all his money and died. Shirley refuses to believe he is dead. Minchin turns her into a servant to pay off her outstanding tuition and costs advanced. So she goes to the attic and sleeps in what is mostly a storeroom, next to Becky, the Cockney servant, and finds that out the window of the room she looks directly into the house next door, where an elegant Indian servant can be seen in the window. The story relies rather too heavily on coincidence, but that's really its only flaw. Shirley is marvelous in the role, other actors we know and love (notably the "cowardly lion") brighten the story, and Shirley even meets Queen Victoria herself! Of course, her father is alive, and she finds him, with Victoria's help.Stand Up and Cheer is another of those "feel good" depression era movies, but this one is far more charming than most. Shirley is very, very young, and just as cute as anyone can imagine. The most important part of this movie is having it available for the history of film.Shirley's father (Notice how she has a great many more fathers than mothers in her movies?) is an unemployed vaudeville actor who has incorporated Shirley into his act, where of course she steals the show every time. So when the government creates a Department of Entertainment (bread and circuses, you know; there were really many such projects in the New Deal), they are recruited to make the country "stand up and cheer." The song that tells it all has lyrics that start "I'm laughing, and I've got nothing to laugh about." Again, some offensive stereotypes of blacks, but what can we do?The Blue Bird is the hidden gem. It was not popular when it was new because Shirley uncharacteristically plays a spoiled brat at the beginning. But since she learns better, I don't consider that a problem. The movie was clearly made to compete with The Wizard of Oz, and in my opinion [blasphemy warning!], it has more going for it as a story than Oz does. Shirley and her little brother are sent on a mission to find the Bluebird of Happiness by a friendly witch -- oh, sorry, a "good fairy." She travels through the graveyard to find her grandparents, who explain that they "wake up" whenever someone remembers them. They want her and her little brother to stay, but they have been warned by their spirit guide, named Light, not to stay more than an hour. Their grandparents have a large cage full of birds, but none of them is blue. They wander around and look for the bird, and have a variety of interesting encounters, but the most remarkable place is the one where little boys and girls live until it is time for them to be born. There is a strong mystic thread here, and seems to imply reincarnation, both pretty esoteric for 1940. Of course, they find the bluebird at home. As Dorothy put it, "There's no place like home."

The remake is so much better!

The Little PrincessUnarguably a family classic, although the compliments stop there. ShirleyTemple is as annoying and unlikable as ever as the "little princess" whoisput in a crass orphanage after her father is believed to have been killedinthe war. The devilish headmistress, knowing she will no longer receivepayment for the girl's keep, locks her in the attic where she remainscheerfully (and quite annoyingly, I might add) optimistic--despiteeverything that is going on. Remade some number of years later, with amuchbetter lead actress (who was optimistic and yet also sad--making thecharacter believable), this original version is one for the crap shoot.Sorry, Ms. Temple--you're just a friggin' brat.** / *****
